It's completely understandable that a student should NOT pass if they miss that much class. I think her teaching is wonderful. She's incredibly approachable, so nice, she makes her lectures easy to follow and provides slides online. She talks a little quietly sometimes but other than that I absolutely loved having her as a professor :)
McKenzie definitely knows her stuff, and is quite willing to help students outside of class (also friendly if you run into her on campus!). Her classes aren't easy though, and she expects everyone to do readings and understand them. Finally, I think she shows a little favouritism towards students who are ML majors.
Nice but tough. Should explain what she wants from essays more clearly, but her lectures are good. If you go to her office hours she's really helpful.
Dr McKenzie knows what she is talking about and is very informative. I find it hard to understand what she is saying sometimes, but if you sit close and pay attention you should be fine. She's really helpful if you e-mail her or go to office hours to ask a question. Classes are fast-paced and have a ton of information in them. Hard marker, but nice
Good classes!time goes by fast which is great! You must do her readings! dont skip them! she talks fast but you really get used to it! She defintly enjoys what she does
Excellent lectures. You need to attend class and do all the readings if you want to do well in her class. She talks fast so it is best to sit at the front of the class. She is very knowledgeable and helpful.
Excellent professor. Very helpful. You need to attend all the lectures and do all the readings if you want to do well in her class.
One of my favorite profs. She knows her stuff. Just attend the lectures and do the readings or else you will have trouble in her class.
Dr Mckenzie knows her stuff. You need to go to lectures and do all the readings for this course. She is very helpful and promptly answers emails. She is a tough marker, but if you do the work and know the material you will get a good mark.
Interesting course. Great professor. You have to read all the material and attend classes to get a good mark. She does talk fast and sometimes it is difficult to get all the information down. However, she does post excellent powerpoint slides.
Prof was really bad..def would not take another class with her
Awesome in office hours but kind of harsh in class. Expects a lot for an elective course.
Awesome prof- definitely knows everything there is to know. She's a tough marker but is awesome in office hours. Have her twice this semester- she's sometimes offput by poor attendance, but she likes to reward those who attend class.
She is a great Prof, who knows her stuff and she makes the classes interesting to go to. If you wanna do well in this class go to every lecture and tutorial. When it comes to asking her for help with writing an Essay she tends to speak in riddles and leaves you with more questions recommend a TA for help on an Essay, they will actually help you pas
I love her. She seems like she's a little bit harsh at first, but that depends on how hard you work in the class. She expects a lot of you, but if you work hard she will be very happy. She loves creative assignments and class participation.
Did not like her at all. Expects a lot, a lot of readings for tutorials. Got very put out when there was little attendence and complains. Dropped all my classes with her for the next semester.
Great prof in a lot of ways, but keep clear unless you're really into history because she expects a lot. She needs to slow down in class, but she's so helpful in office hours and actually holds extra ones when she knows students want to see her!
Not a good professor at all. If there is a class that she is teaching DO NOT take it. Goes way too fast in lecture. Does not explain about significant people, places, events, etc. that will be on exam. Just overall a bad professor. Unless you really like the Middle Ages, you might actually like this class but if not you probably won't.
Great prof for history majors, kind of scary for anyone else. Really funny in lectures - the historical stories are great. I love the fact that she rewards people who come to class with extra study tips for the exam. It sure paid off for me!
She teaches to the people who come to lectures, review notes, come to tutorials, and read the assigned readings in the textbook. If you don't do that, you will not understand much and, more importantly, you will not learn much from any course she teaches.
One of my favourite profs! Ignore low ratings, they are from people who obviously did not try hard enough. Dr. McKenzie rewards students who show up, do the readings, and work hard. Exams/Tests are challenging, but that didn't stop me from getting an A+ in the class (and I'm not a Medieval Studies major)
Tough. Really, really tough. Subject material is hard, too. She definitely doesn't go easy on you (expects a LOT), but she's probably the most helpful prof I had all term. When she offers extra office hours, GO TO THEM.
Tries to help. But she is too soft spoken. No one can hear her and she doesn't do anything about it. She needs a mic in class! Participation is mandatory for lectures and it feels more like a high school class than a university lecture. Material is interesting. But I fall asleep every time cuz I cant hear a word. Some things too complicated to get.
I hear way to many complaints about this AMAZING prof. She wants to help everyone do their best and the lectures are easy to follow. Do the readings and go to class and life will be good. My goal is to take every class she is offering over the next 3 years!!
She's not an easy prof, but she's definitely one of the best at Laurier. She knows so much about her subject, and she marks very fairly on papers and tests as long as you follow her rules. As long as you attend lectures and do the readings, you'll do fine.
She is mean when you go to her office and ask her for help. Remember to ask specific questions. She treats her class like high school students. However, she is very knowledgeable and is a fair marker.
Good lectures, but she's pretty quiet so sit near the front. Make sure you go see her about your paper - she looks at rough drafts, which is super helpful. DO NOT TEXT IN HER CLASS.
She is an amazing prof. She cares alot about her students and her office hours are great to go talk to her. im planning on taking all her classes.
This psychedelic prof is like a dragon in the sky, a wizard of medieval history that imbues the mind with knowledge. She is the grand master of awesomeness and expects you to do your work and not complain like a preschooler. Prove that you will be the very best like no one ever was. To train them is her cause. She is the picture def. of a prof.
She was very supportive whenever I needed extra help or had any questions. Her course involved a lot of reading and the coverage of a lot of material. Probably too much. She grades fairly and gives reasonable tests.
Dr. McKenzie is a sweet angel from heaven. She has hilarious historical commentary, and she really cares for her students. But for gods sake, do the work. It's not easy, but she definitely rewards you for it. Anyone who doesn't like her is simply lazy, because I'm pretty sure she could coax an interest in medieval studies out of a potted plant.
Her lectures are super interesting, informative and interactive. I loved the readings and assignments and felt that they complimented the course nicely. She was always there if I needed help, and gave very clear instructions. Overall, she's been one of my favourite professors thus far. Don't hesitate to take her courses :)
Hands down my favourite prof at this university. I struggled a lot this semester and hers was the only class I didn't skip to lie in bed. Utterly hilarious commentary and genuinely cares about students. As long as you make a solid effort you will do well in her courses. I plan to take as many classes that she teaches as I can.
Your grade depends entirely on how hard you want to work. She is 100% willing to help you if you ask - don't go in with questions you could find the answer to on your own. Be ready to read and if you're shy, get over it because participation is key. She loves discussion and enjoys listening to your perspective so speak up and show what you know!!
Had an online quiz where she included two "joke" questions, but she included the correct answers (which were not correct to the marking algorithm). I pay to be in your class, act like it.
This woman is my life. She is a sweetheart and a half. Take her class. No ragrets
Speaks extremely quiet in class that even with a microphone she can barely be heard.
I wasn't sure what to expect from a course on Game of Thrones. This had a lot of history in it, but it was pretty interesting. She's tough, but she'll sit down with you in office hours and go over outlines for your paper, which is really helpful when you're like me and not a good writer. Her lectures were really funny.
She's so quiet, I can barely hear her! Someone needs to fix her mic. Her lectures are funny & interesting but I found her to be rather intimidating. Attending lectures is a must bc the notes she posts online are too vague. She goes quite fast and can be hard to keep up with. Some students seem to absolutely adore her but she definitely wasnt my fav
Is too quiet during lectures. Since she is often deal with names and places that are new to us, so you would think she would include the spelling of most of them, which she does not. Her slides are very lazy so don't expect to pass the class reading them.
Loved her lectures. She picks totally wild things to talk about - the lecture on human sacrifice was gross and amazing. You really need to pay attention at lectures to do well on the quizzes. Her final was pretty fair, the bonus marks for bringing in an outline for her to look at were awesome.
Professor McKenzie is probably one of the best professors I could have started university off with. She genuinely cares about her students and their success in the course. I'll never understand those who skip class and procrastinate, then blame her for their low grade. She gives many chances for bonus marks-- keep up the good work professor M! :)
She's very quiet, even sitting in the third row I could barely hear her with a mic on. Her slides are very lazy, a lot of names/places that are very important are not included. She would always call out texters because they were 'distracting', but I found her stopping the lecture for a minute to call them out was even more distracting.
Best elective ever, I've never had so much fun. First assignment was kind of unusual, but pretty straightforward once she clarified a few things.
Great Prof, very good lecture style with a clear focus of teaching. Has fun exercises for students to get marks. Very approachable, engaged, enthusiastic, and cares about the success of her students. She is always willing to accept feedback on how she can do better for you.
Th class itself was alright, but she is mean. When you ask basic questions she gives you the stink eye and makes you feel stupid. She singles you out in front of class and makes you ultimately scared to ask questions. Instead of being supportive, she makes you feel like your question is stupid. She can be nice, but very rude at the same time.
Lectures are awesome but super detailed and the topics jump around because it's a global history class. I liked her because I saw her a bunch of times in her office for help with the paper and she never got impatient with me. Final was rough - make sure you get good notes.
Amazing prof/person! Her grading scheme is more than fair but you must show that you made an effort. She's slow to warm up to a new class of students but once she's comfortable you'll see that she deeply cares about her students as well as her subject. Attendance is a must as she rarely posts online and marks participation. Hope to have her again!
Very knowledgable but is slightly intimidating. Hard grading on the essay, take advantage of the extra credit and see her multiple times, that's the only sure way to do well. Slides are only good for spelling, go to class! Picks interesting topics. Talks quickly, but if you're paying attention you'll be fine. Get on her good side!
Professor McKenzie is my favourite! She truly does care about her students well being! Always knows how to make lectures & active learning actually enjoyable. The more effort you put in, the more she'll be likely to offer extra help! It's all about communication, guys! Keep up the good work professor McKenzie- I'm double majoring because of you! :)
Took this class as an elective and it was awesome. You look at all kinds of pop culture and the in class activities are so much fun. You'll ace the course as long as you come and do the readings. I'm going to keep an eye out for more classes she teaches - she was great!
Prof. McKenzie is by far one of the best at Laurier. She is truly the definition of a caring professor who will help you in any way she can. Don't be afraid to talk to her!! She is honestly one of the sweetest ladies I know and I could not have made the decision to double major without her incredible encouragement and support in my academic ability
Being a science major, I had no idea what I had coming for me taking a medieval studies course. Prof M was so understanding of that & really helped make me feel not only comfortable with the material but also spark a real interest in history for me. Yes, this is a lot of history in this course, but the then fun stuff she throws in makes it worth
I love Prof McKenzie! This is the fourth class of hers that I've taken and she never fails to be absolutely wonderful, knowledgeable and unconditionally helpful! Her lectures are funny, engaging and jam packed with info. Great prof! If you do the readings, go to class and complete all of the assignments you are sure to succeed.
Prof M is simply amazing. She does make you work for a good grade; but if you initiate yourself, and make an effort you are sure to pass! She is really approachable, and really helpful for nay situation. She respects students who admit they need help, and she does everything to help you. Taking one of her courses is a MUST.
I thought we'd watch a lot more Game of Thrones than we did but a cool course still. I like the Medieval ages so learning more about it was ok by me. Not a bird course but if you had trouble with anything all you had to do was go see her in her office. Really funny lectures sometimes, loved the one on memes the best.
She is quite intimidating and it is hard to hear her speak during lectures, which makes it hard to understand the course when her slides are very vague.
Professor McKenzie is a gem. Thank you for making a very difficult source-issued topic actually enjoyable and understandful! You are the best.
I took the Game of Thrones class because I liked the show. I never thought of myself as much of a history person but Prof M made it so interesting that now I want to take more next year. She IS tough - this is so not a bird course - but if you go to class and pay attention you're fine. I wound up with a way higher mark than I expected.
Goes at the pace that is to be expected in university. Very knowledgeable about a wide variety of historical topics. Eager to see kids during her office hours. If you want a challenge, and also wanted to feel like you earned your grade, take her classes. Be warned though, you can't have an issue with attendance in her classes and expect to do well.
Cool lady. She makes you write a lot in lectures so if you don't have at least 40 fingers you might not pass, but that's ok. 1/1 would take again :D
Her instructions for things can be very vague and when you ask her to elaborate, she doesn't really do a very good job at elaborating. Generally, in my experience, this has affected my grade significantly.
She talks way to fast in lectures, and does not repeat important points. If you ask a question she makes you feel so stupid. She thinks everyone has a basic understanding of the history she is teaching and that is not the case. The material covered is not as interesting as I thought it was going to be. Would not recommend this class to anyone.
As history courses go, this one is tough but really interesting. You do need to work hard to do well because it covers a lot of material pretty quickly. Showing up and focusing on taking notes is a must, keeping up with your readings too.
I absolutely loved this course. I learned so much about ancient history that I never knew existed, and my mark on the paper is way higher than it would have been if Mckenzie hadn't encouraged us to bring in outlines so she could give us feedback. I may not be planning to major in history but I'm for sure going to be taking more courses with her.
Amazing professor!! This is my 7th course with Professor McKenzie! She can be tough on her students, but that is because she wants to see us succeed. This course was about medievalism in video games, something that alone is a real treat to Wilfrid Laurier, let alone having Professor McKenzie teach it. Talk to her, she loves hearing from students!!
So boring
Not at all what I was expecting from a Harry Potter course but really cool. She basically shows you what from the middle ages inspired Rowling and how Rowling did her own thing with it. Lectures can be a little heavy but it's interesting enough that I don't have trouble paying attention. She's super nice too if you go talk to her in office hours.
Professor McKenzie was an amazing teacher who despite being a little intimidating at first, shows off her caring, helpful and funny characteristics. She makes class interesting with showing videos and occasionally doing activities in class. Would recommend as she does care for her students and their marks. Just make sure to pay attention!
Professor McKenzie is an icon. She cares about her students so much, she just showed up to proctor the final exam after being HIT BY A CAR. You should respect and fear her.
Hard prof but clearly cares about her students. Show up to lectures, participate in tutorials and put a decent amount of effort into your work and you'll be fine. She did have random mood swings though which was intimidating and was unpredictable in her marking, she either marked really hard or really easy. The course was 99% medieval studies 1% HP
Don't go into this class thinking it's a bird course just because it's Harry Potter. But if you like history and the Middle Ages and you're willing to put in the work you'll get a lot out of it. She's tough but not unreasonable and she definitely knows the material. Much less intimidating in office hours!
Fantastic lectures and overall a really good teacher, she gave lots of opportunities to prove myself. Excited to have her again next semester.
I had prof Mckenzie for 2 courses last semester and although she was quite intimidating, she was very caring towards her students. Easy marks from participating in the tutorials, also helps with the final exam.
Dr. McKenzie cares about her students and knows her material inside and out yet she still asks way too much of the UNDERGRADUATE students. I do not think she realizes that we are in other courses, and/or maybe she does but doesn't care. The assignments that she gives start extremely simple and then with no warning jump to near impossible.
I LOVE ancient history but I could not stand this class. Her lectures were dry and she literally sat there reading off a long paper she wrote and barely referenced the slides. Every time I tried to ask her a question she would look at me like I was stupid and it gave me to much anxiety to speak up in class or in tutorials
Really great lectures. Liked that she talked about archaeology too. Readings were tough but the exam was fair and I loved the blog entry assignment.
One of the best profs this school has to offer. Insightful, caring, funny, and delivers amazing lectures. Do not show up late and don't pull your phone out and you will love any class with her. I've also taken ML100 and ML101 with her and can recommend those with her as well
Mrs. Mackenzie is great, her classes are tough and shes a fair marker. But show up to class, be an active participant and youll see how great her classes can be
Interesting lectures, but a ton of info thrown at you in a short time. Take notes very quickly. Slides are unhelpful. The articles we read were a real mixed bag. Some were great and some were awful. Very dry and sarcastic sense of humour. Don't ask questions about something she already answered; her response will be unkind.
I found her lectures very lengthy and hard to follow, and her general persona to seem quite rude. She was not very clear when it came to assignments and despite the class being a first year class, she acted as though it were more senior.
Amazing course if you're looking for ancient history but bored of Greek and Roman. Lectures are heavy but fascinating. She obviously wants students to do well but expects you to work for it. Really great in office hours - go to see her when you're writing the papers!
Professor McKenzie is, no joke, the best professor I've ever had. I jump at the opportunity to take one of her classes. Yes, you'll have to put in work, but I generally find her assignments to be fun and unique - not just essay after essay. I can tell she truly cares about the material she teaches. I enjoy her teaching style and demeanour.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Dr. McKenzie is the best prof i've had at Laurier. There is a lot of reading, participation totally matters, and stay off your phone in lecture (she will call you out for it - she has hawk eyes for phones). She really just wants her students to do well. Come to class, work hard, and your grades will reflect.
What a gem. She has a hard exterior and will call you out if you are on your phone in a lecture but she really is a sweetheart. Her grading was fair for the most part. I will take more of her classes!
Based on the name of the course I thought we'd be learning about the actual Middle Ages, but all we talked about was the Middle East and Religion. Barely anything to do with Europe, or anything in the actual course description
I really enjoyed the course, it gave a good introduction to the history of the middle ages, covering all relevant areas and periods that a student of history should know. Although the course was great, I feel bad for any non history majors that took it as compared to any other, with the exception of her other class HI121, was significant harder.
I enjoyed the course content. However, what troubled me was the lack of cooperation she offered in the course. She wasn't approachable at all. Another issue is that she grades extremely hard for no reason. Despite liking the content, I can't help but feel some academic elitism made the course inaccessible. I would not recommend it.
Really enjoyed this class. She told us she actually wrote the online lessons, and I thought they were great, really clear and interesting. Shes a tough grader, but definitely approachable. She went over some stuff with me that really helped me do better on the final paper. Would take another course with her again, no question.
This was a cool class. The prof actually wrote the online lessons and they were great (I loved the galleries of cathedrals and artwork). Assignments were reasonable. She made the final essay shorter because we couldn't get into the library (thanks covid) and gave us a take-me exam. Hoping to take another class from her in an actual classroom!
Hands down worst prof (and TA) I've ever had. Took her for DH200 in 2017. Don't be fooled by the digital narratives part, it is actually an all-out history course in disguise. I put in SO much effort on my video projects only to be dismissed as historically inaccurate... ridiculous! She absolutely ruined what would've been a fun and creative course
Not sure what superiority complex the student above has, but they are not correct. I too was in the course in 2017, and the criteria were not only straightforward but also very fun to engage in! It was EASIER than any 100 level history course, so absolutely do not compare it to one. It was a digital course with a history/geography/pop culture mix.
For remote teaching I think she's doing a pretty good job. Her instructions for assignments could be clearer and I don't think she needs to have us do so much but it actually does work to help understand the material better. She really tries to encourage us and that means a lot.
I'm not sure where people are getting the fact that she helps people? I email her questions and never ends up responding to me. She sometimes emails everyone saying to just "look over the instructions". HORRIBLE. I would avoid any classes she teaches.
She answers email so fast it's kind of scary... I wonder sometimes if she ever leaves the computer. The blog assignment she has you do in this class is a lot more interesting than it looks. It's nice to be able to write something people might actually like to read instead of just another boring paper.
I emailed her about an extension and she didn't bother responding.
Great prof! Super approachable and understanding. 100% recommend.
Amazing prof, she gave us a week extension on a project when she realized a lot of her students were overwhelmed by other schoolwork, which goes to show how much she cares about her students. Assignments were interesting and the content was superb, I didn't find her to be a tough marker, she was rather fair.
Solid prof, but not for those wanting an easy course. You'll do well if you keep up with the work, read assignment instructions, and go to the Zoom sessions. Can be kind of sarcastic, but I think she's funny. She gave us some light assignments with flexible deadlines that made things a lot easier.
I loved this course. Mongol history is amazing and Mckenzie presented it really well, even having to do it remotely. I actually loved listening to her recorded lectures because you get so caught up in the stories. Assignments were reasonable although the final project (a video) was tough. She really tried to do her best with the remote teaching.
Very unapproachable. Her lessons are not too long, however, they can we confusing at times. She get's angry or frustrated when you ask for help and says to look at the syllabus instead of helping. This is reasonable, however, her instructions are unclear and this WILL affect your mark dramatically. Do not recommend.
Loved this course. Her recorded lectures were great and she didnt pile on the work like some profs did for online. Her assignments are creative which can be scary but also fun. She can get a little sarcastic sometimes but when you do something well she lets you know it.
The overall course content was not difficult but professor Mckenzie made the class way more difficult than it needed to be. She was not approachable at all and often had a rude tone when answering any questions or concerns. Do not recommend!
As a professor, I do not think she realizes how she talks to people and how it can come off very mean. Her instructions are unclear and hard to understand. She marks really hard on certain assignments and in some cases she can be very unhelpful as she says to re-read it even though what she has written is confusing. The same goes for any questions.
McKenzie is the most caring prof ive ever had the pleasure of working with! She has a very sarcastic nature which some may find scary, but her true fans know thats her humour! Youll never leave a class without laughing at least once. Make sure to ask about her cat, he likes to make sure her students know about him ;)
Best elective I've ever taken. Some of the topics are more interesting than others (I wasn't a big fan of the historical fiction stuff, but the topics on Disney, gaming, and memes were awesome) but the whole class is just FUN. Getting to do a creative project instead of another research paper was awesome.
Dr. McKenzie is definitely one of the best professors I've ever had, you can tell that she really cares about the subjects she teaches, and my friends and I all love her. I think she's a pretty fair marker, just do the readings and make sure to read the syllabus carefully.
Prof. McKenzie is an amazing lecturer and very fair marker, and she really cares about her students succeeding in their studies. Just be sure to read the syllabus and pay attention in class. Dont be disrespectful and put in the work and I guarantee her classes will be the best youve ever taken.
The most sweet and understand prof at Laurier. Cherish her.
I only have praise for Dr. McKenzie. I had a small issue at one point and when brought up, she immediately helped fix it. She was a fair grader, understanding of the fact we are in a pandemic, and made sure lectures were comprehensive, educational and interesting. I can't speak to the HI courses, but I highly recommend any ML course taught by her.
Dr. M is a legend. Any first year students coming in - take a course with her, you won't regret it! Her humour is hilariously sarcastic and she's an amazing lecturer. Advice - if you ask a 'dumb' question, you will get a sarcastic remark. Dr. M is a prof god, we don't annoy gods, we make gods happy by attending lectures and engaging in class.
SHE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, TAKE HER AL ALL COSTS
Too much readings. Reading for lectures and more readings for tutorials. and even more reading for a book review. I had to dedicate almost one whole week for this class
Dr. Mckenzie is an amazing professor. I took this course as an elective and it was so much fun learning about Vikings and how they tied into different Medieval video games. She is amazing and I am so happy I got an A+ (95%) as long as you pay attention to the syllabus and tutorials you'll do great. Will gladly take her classes again!
Midterm and Exam weren't too hard, but need to watch the lectures.
Professor McKenzie is incredibly knowledgeable. The course is very interesting with a hands-on option. Learned a lot from this Professor. Only 'complaint' is the few items that are used to grade, but she is super kind and helpful with any concerns.
I took ML200 with her and she is not approachable at all and makes this class way more difficult then it has to be frankly. Tough marker, even though her assignment instructions are sometimes unclear and she punishes you and when asking a question she has this annoyed/rude tone to her. She is not reasonable, would not recommend this class at all.
Alicia McKenzie was a great professor, and always had the interests of her students at heart. If the world allowed it I would take more of her courses, unfortunately, Professor McKenzie is now dancing the danse macabre. I can not thank her enough for all that she taught me during the few years I knew her. Rest in Peace Professor Alicia McKenzie.
May your memory be eternal. Without you, I would not have been able to achieve even a fraction of what I've been able to do. Thank you for being our #1 supporter, mom 2.0, and always looking out for our best interests. Thank you for being so passionate about your work, you've made medievalists out of us all. RIP! You have touched so many lives.
Professor McKenzie was an amazing prof and she will be missed heavily from staff and students. I had the wonderful pleasure of taking her ML103 course which was the Digital Valhallas. It was a fun course and I got a 95%. I wish I was able to take more courses with her, but unfortunately she has sadly passed on. Gone but never forgotten. Xo RIP
