good prof. super easy pop-quizzes just for attendance purposes
I love Alicia. She is so sweet and caring. The best part of her class is .. you dont fall asleep. She engages the class in discussion so well! She is so nice and makes you feel GREAT about school, even during the most stressing-est times.. I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND HER.
She is very hard and is a GPA killer she expects you to know the whole textbook. Her exams are super hard and they consist of fill in the blanks without a word bank and short answers. TAKE MY ADVICE AND DO NOT TAKE HER!
I loved Alicia! I had never really considered psyc before and only took it for extra credit but Alicia is so interested in the subject that class went by fast and was really interesting! Tests are fair, if you read the textbook a bit you'll be fine. Definitely take Alicia if you can.
I felt she put very little effort into teaching.
Very engaging and interesting, very willing to help and very nice. Grades nicely, yes she has fill in the blanks but as long as you listen to her and read the text you're gold. :)
very nice lady but VERY LAZY! cancelled every other class because she didn't feel like teaching. not very good at teaching us, expects the class to teach themselves. Felt like a waste of time and money being in her class
Laidback, funny, chill. Self-guided, a lot of textbook studying & self-note taking. PowerPoint based (skims over content) Test format: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, and short answer (always gives a hint/says what SA question is) Will not pass class unless time to study out of textbook is put in. Found in-class assignment online ;)
Mrs. Spidel didn't take teaching the class seriously. She cancelled many classes. When we did have class it lasted 1hr(out of 3hr block). I learned very little in class. She skimed over PP slides, so I had to teach myself. She made marking mistakes on my exams and my final grade and was rude when I questioned her about it. I do Not recommend her.
Teacher doesn't have that desire to be a teacher. She lacks in energy. Dull and boring to listen to. Gets her test questions from the study guide from the text. I really want liked 1100 due to the teacher, but 1200 I had to take Alicia. Worst choice. Pro tip: memorize the study guide, don't listen in class, and you will pass no problem.
I really loved this teacher!! Alicia is so engaging that class was really fun. She will make you love psychology.
Excellent class and teacher!
Fun and interesting teacher. Easy pop-quizzes just for attendance purposes - she gives lots of hints for the exams - come to class and pay attention and it will be easy to do well.
Fun class.
This teachers enthusiasm is catching - she obviously loves teaching and her work. Made me interested in psychology! She gives hint during the lectures for the exams so if you pay attention you will do well.
Awful experience. I enjoy a challenge but her exams tested every corner of the textbook.I felt exams were over the top for a first year psych class given that we were only allowed an hour to write each exam and given an incredible amount of qts. Went fast through the power points and I had to learn most of the material on my own. Do not recommend.
Excellent teacher - she loves the topic - her exams are fair and easy if you read the chapters - course assignments are easy and are easy to get full marks on it you attend class!
Loved the class - exams are easy and she gives very good hints in class. listen and attend and you will be fine.
Loved this class, and loved the teacher. Very straightfoward tests, study the notes she gives in class and read the textbook and you'll do great. She's clear on what will be on the exam and there are no surprises.
Alicia is very enthusiatic and knows the material - she is good at keeping the class attention.
Good class.
If you listen and attend classes she gives lots of hint on what is on the exam - you just have to pay attention. Fun class.
Great class!
Alici is great and very kind. She makes every effort to make the material interesting.
She really loves the subject she teaches but her tests are not fare to give first year students. Only given an hour to write a 60 question test which covers everything. She dose not use the full class time even when the majority of her class is not passing. She is a very hard marker.
Fun class and super easy assignments!
This is a very fun class and Alicia really knows her stuff. She make the class fun and has great examples.
One of the very best teachers I have ever had. Didn't have to let me in the class but did. She made lectures interesting and even fun. Clearly passionate about what she teaches.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Generates interest in the subject through her own enthusiasm. Lectures are engaging, and fun.
Awesome teacher.
Easy quizes and assignments - just show up - really bumps up the GPA. Also fun class.
Out early every class. She cancelled classes with little notice. She changed the syllabus last minute in class, so already spent hours reading the chapter, wasted time. Tested us on a chapter she told us was omitted. I brought this to her attention and she had to reverse up to 10 marks in everybody's exam. Overall, poor experience. I got an A+
Lectures were very interesting - she really knows her stuff!
Alicia is a great prof! She is always willing to help as long as you ask, and her class is pretty easy as long as you show up and participate. She does a great job of mixing the class up so you don't get bored, and she is reasonable with grading. Her tests are a little tough, but study from the book and you'll do fine. Overall, she's a great prof!
Had her at Douglas College for Psychology 1100. Her class was boring, she basically read off the lecture slides, flew through material and overall it felt as if she didn't really care. Would not take again
I loved her! I took her for Psychology 101 and am so disappointed that I can't take her in the winter semester. I got an A in her class BUT that is because I read every chapter before we would have class. You need to READ the chapters before her classes because she speeds through the material when she is explaining.
Alicia is a good teacher. She is there for students to ask questions, has students work in groups on simple assignments , but the exams are difficult and you need to study hard in order to get a decent grade. Her lectures are long but now and then funny she talks super quick, but they help break down the info. Overall, good, but speedy, and fun
She is the best. Very interesting and fun!
Class is very fun - great lectures and interesting!
She goes by the textbook and online notes; read them all. She basically recites the slides in class, so I wont say attendance is mandatory, but she does do a few in-class assignments by surprise, nor worth much but still you want them completed. Not very helpful, and clarity is iffy at times. All in all not recommended.
Love her!! Awesome classes.
This was my favourite class all year - fun and interesting!
She is funny and makes the topics interesting - excellent!!!
Alicia is the type of person you want to be friends with after class. Engaging lectures and she knows what she's talking about.
Show up to class because some of the assignments are randomly given and they are worth marks. Overall a good teacher, make sure you study for the exams and read the textbook
Her lectures are alright, cover the basics for what you need to know and you can a get good mark if you just study notes but if you want an A then need to read textbook. Her exams are really short so every question you get wrong as a large impact. She gives you hints about what will be on exam. You do need to study but not a ton, about the usual.
Great prof. She's very kind and her lectures (its a lecture heavy class) are super interesting. She's accessible and her grading is not too harsh. Would definitely take more of her classes.
Really good prof since she presents all the material in the simplest way possible. Helps students by telling clearly what she would expect them to know for the exam.
Alicia is a nice lady, but I felt like she barely showed up to class sometimes. She cancelled so many classes, and always rushed through lectures so that she could end the classes early. It was a nice, easy class, but I wanted more. She also walks around the room, like, a lot, and adjusts her sweater so much, it is so distracting!
amazing teacher. Easy and funny. Has 4 assignments worth 20%, just dont know when she'll have them to you have to attend each lecture, unless she tells you when they are. Tells you want you need to study for the exam as you go along the powerpoint. Study day or two before the exam and your good. Great GPA booster
Alicia is a great prof. She tries to keep her lectures as short as possible which is appreciated with a 3 hour class. She only covers the basic material and makes you go into further depth in your own time. She has a few assignments that are very easy. She's very approachable and has very interesting stories that keep you engaged in the class.
Very friendly. Easy participation and assignment marks. Very clear on what she expects on exams, and they are fairly straightforward. Don't bother with the textbook though, I opened it once.
She is one of the best I've ever had.
Great prof! She really knows what she's talking about. All of her lectures are based off of her powerpoint which she posts online for everyone to access. Be sure to print out the slides and bring them to class everyday because there is some note taking and that is the most convenient way to do it. She gives hints on what will be on the exams.
Very nice & funny, really enjoyed her class when she was there. Multiple classes cancelled including to give us time for assignments that would've only taken up 10mins of our 3hr class, & never lectured after her 1hr exams. It just seemed wasteful during a condensed course. Knows her stuff though and gives lots of hints for what will be on exams!
A good professor, but would be excellent if she actually showed up to lectures. Many times she'd post a message online, not an email, that she couldn't make it due to being "sick". This being a condensed course really mattered, she probably showed up to 7/12 classes. Mini assignments are random throughout the course but are easy. Rushes lectures.
Hilarious and knows her stuff!
Really engaging and entertaining! Exams are tough but fair. Really cares about students.
She is a great prof and very understanding! However her exams were hard, make sure to read the textbook and know your terms. Show up to class because she gives out assignments randomly!!
Knows her stuff and makes it fun!
Great professor! She could be more specific in some areas rather than rushing through the material, but overall I really enjoyed her class and her knowledge about the subject. She's an easy going professor! :)
Alicia is a great person, which makes her a great prof. She does always seem a bit rushed and disorganized, but it's clear that she enjoys what she does. There are two midterms and a final that are not cumulative, and are largely multiple choice. The one annoying thing was that she said there would be no group work, which wasn't true at all.
She seemed like a pretty nice lady, and the class itself wasn't challenging with her as the professor. It didn't ever feel as if we covered much content, making the class much easier than it should have been. There was only one small group assignment, worth so little of your mark that it barely mattered. Class always ended early too.
Alicia's class was super easy. A lot of the classes were cancelled and only a portion of the class was ever used; I felt that I only went to class about five times throughout the semester. However, it is very easy to get high marks in her class, just study the text in addition to her slides and complete the assignments (which are super quick).
One of my fav profs! She loves what she does and it shows!
Alicia is a great teacher totally recommend her. Good GPA booster 3 exams and 5 mini assignments super easy if you just study her lectures. I took 101/102 with her and both were great
Alicia is a very nice prof and very knowledgeable. Her course is engaging and fairly easy. However, she's not very accessible outside of class. Overall, a great prof though.
Fun and funny lectures!
I've never had a prof be so jumbly when it comes to lectures. she's disorganized and mumbles and talks really fast. instead of explaining details she says "things" or "stuff" not the actual word. she is really nice though..
Alicia is very knowledgeable about the subject however she tends to jump around a lot during her lectures. She will stay on one slide for 5 minutes but then she skips three or four slides to talk about something else quickly barley giving you enough time to write notes, then moves on to something else.
Alicia is knowledgable in her field for sure, but unfortunately she seems to forget that her students are not. She speaks so fast that it is impossible to take notes. Also, there are at least 5 group projects assigned, for none of which is sufficient class time given. Gives no feedback on assignments, not even on the major presentation.
Alicia is a great prof and is super funny and qualified. The class has 4 easy assignments and 2 exams. No papers! All the lecture slides are posted on Blackboard and she gives hints during her lecture as to what's on the exam. Easy class, interesting lectures, and great stories. Actually learned stuff in this class!
Alicia gave a detailed outline first day of class and stuck to it. There were five assignments that you could do it partners, she chose your best 4. The 3 exams were easy and only covered certain chapters for each. She also drops hints as to what questions will be on the exam. Class ended early and breaks were given. Great prof overall.
Alicia is one of the most caring and wonderful professors I have ever had, I would recommend her to anyone. She doesn't have the mark you hard to prove a point mentality and its really refreshing. I actually learned things in her class because it was so easy going and not stressful and interesting. Great prof!
Alicia is by far one of my favourite professors. I'll take any class she teaches. Fantastic lectures, she actually keeps the class interested the entire time and almost always ends early. Very clear in her expectations, and I find all her assignments/tests to be fair if you paid attention during the lecture and did the readings.
Got her for the 2nd half of class as orig prof resigned - she was very considerate of the circumstances and she waived weekly participation assigns the week of midterm and final. Her final was very reasonable she mentioned she would make it fair and it was. It was 50 mc and 2 written questions (she gives hints in lecs about what will be on exam).
Alicia was my prof for the second half of 102, as our previous prof had resigned. Her lectures were clear and she gave multiple hints for what would be on the exam. She also dropped one of the testable chapters that would have been on the final. Overall, a very nice lady and an easy A if youre willing to put the work in.
Alicia is very knowledgeable in her field, but online classes are not her strong suit. She is not good at answering questions outside of class or posting lectures on time. I believe she is a great in-person teacher but I would not take her if you are online.
Alicia is knowledgeable in her field but online psych 102 with her was not good. She is rarely accessible and struggles with communication with students. Tests are easy and she gives big hints as to what's on them. Her grading is fair and she seems like a nice person, just unfortunate that online experience was bad :/
Alicia is a wonderful professor whose lectures are fun and clear. She cares about her students and really helped me to be sucessful.
Dr Spidel is a very good prof. Class consists of 3 exams, 3 small assignments and one group assignment. Tests were more on the difficult side but i'm sure that's to keep you accountable for your learning. You will def need to read the textbook. Fairly easy marker on the assignments. I'd take a course with her again.
I have taken professor Spidel in Psych 101 and 102 in person and I really enjoyed having her as my prof for those classes, however, taking her in psych 202 online was awful. Her email responses were very vague, she would respond with one or two words which confused me as well as a few of my classmates and made the whole experience very stressful.
Throughout this entire semester, Alicia has had poor communication, lectures, and attitudes towards her course and students. She is slow at answering emails and gives unclear answers both in-person and online. I felt very disrespected in the class and had the feeling she didn't care about the material she was teaching or about her students' success
I had Alicia for PSYC 101 and she was lovely. However for 202 she is very confusing in regards to her grading rubrics and expects students to know exactly what she is talking about. When she does reply to emails, she is very vague in her answers and does not elaborate at all or give helpful feedback.
Alicia was amazing in 241, but in 202 I think she was just as confused as us. I think she was overwhelmed as this was her first time teaching 202 (lab), but it didnt help the students at all. Alicia is extremely nice and kind, but I do feel this course may not be her best.
She taught the lab portion of this class and she seemed like she wanted to be helpful but there was not a lot of communication. This lab is a lot of work & with only 4 in person classes it became overwhelming and confusing. During the flooding she checked in with each student to make sure they were on track. Should've done that for each class.
From the start of the semester, there was a step-by-step guide to the entire research assignment available as well as examples to follow for each section, and we were allowed to work ahead if possible. Her email answers were very concise, but considering how many people must have been asking questions, I was surprised by how quickly she'd respond.
I had Alicia in my first semester and had a really good experience with her. Lectures are clear and fairly easy to follow. As for homework, it was super light because we only had 2 (small) out-of-class assignments. everything else was done during class time, and as long as you fully do the in-class assignment it's easy to get a good mark.
She really knows her stuff and answer emails very quickly. Super helpful if you show up to office hours.
I had Alicia for PSYC 241 (Online) and she was great; however, for PSYC 202 she was a mess. I think this was her first semester teaching 202 so she was very confused. I also felt disrespected since her answers to my questions were very vague and she used an annoyed/rude tone if I didn't understand something.
She is great. I really enjoyed having her she makes the class really easy assignments are not complicated at all and gives tons of time to get your work in.
I found this course very easy for a second year psych course. We had 3 exams, a few smaller assignments, and one big group project. She was easy to reach, graded quite fairly, and knew what she was talking about. Would definitely take a course with her in the future.
Alicia acts so annoyed and makes you feel dumb whenever you ask a question. I would never take this course again with her.
Difficult class but made easy by her helpfulness and quick responses!
Such a hard class but great response time and meet with me 3 times outside of class to help with project! Very helpful.
Really great teacher would recommend. She is clear on what she excepts and is very caring towards her students.
This class was very poorly organized to the point I'd avoid taking another class by this teacher because of it. We weren't given instruction on how to access notes or homework. There were 2 group projects which made up 30% of your final grade. The saving grace for this class is that the exams and non group projects are relatively easy.
She is so disorganized. I was in Psyc 202 and she made us show up to 3 extra classes to participate in each other's studies because not enough people signed up from Psyc 101/102. This is fine but she promised everyone that showed up and participated in studies bonus marks which she never gave in the end. So unfair and disappointing.
Hard class but so helpful outside of class. Extra Zoom meeting at random times for help.
This is a lecture /lab class, and Alicia is a good lab professor. She is very helpful and will communicate all the time (she called me through zoom on a Sunday to help). She wants you to succeed which makes this portion of the class a bit better (worth 40%) of the grade. I wish these classes were separate. It is a lot for a 200-level class.
Alicia was a great prof! I had her for the lab portion of the class, and she was super accessible and gave really good feedback along the way. She did a great job of splitting up the tasks each week so that by the end, we had most of our final paper already written/planned.
She needs to understand that students do not know anything about SONA and the LAB component. Even tho I asked her question after question she does not know how to communicate clearly. She does not tell you everything you need to know. She marked my assignment wrong even tho it was correct and I had to show it to her to get my marks corrected...
Really easy grader, good feedback, a few group projects but really easy. Good course to take to increase GPA. Not quick to respond to emails though.
Prof Spidel had everything posted on blackboard, and left it to the students to navigate through the weeks without many reminders. She marks quite easy, leaves good feedback, and the instructions, and grading criteria are clear. Exams were open book and there were few group projects. She was kind of dry on email, but overall, easy class to take!
The prof is nice, but she seems so disorganized. Cancelled so many classes, that I only went in maybe 3 times for a lecture. Her lectures are 40+ slides that she doesn't really elaborate on. Felt like I was teaching myself most of the time, with no help or guidance. I wouldn't take another class with her.
I took this class online during the summer semester. She was slow to respond to emails, the lectures were dry, and there was a textbook issue (she was using an outdated copy), which resulted in some students getting wrong answers on tests because of it; however, she did address this. But... she is a VERY generous marker and the class was easy.
Because of my previous bad experience with her, I was doubtful of taking this class. But she is the only one teaching it. Surprisingly she is been very good at expaining, maybe because it is more practical and based on skills, which helps with using examples from her personal experiences. She is still not answering to emails on a timely manner.
Alicia's teaching style is best suited for the self-directed learner. She's very generous with grading, rounded up a couple of my assignments and dropped lower grades. Her information can be outdated sometimes, you can tell slides haven't been updated since the 2000s. Great for independent learners, since you may end up mostly teaching yourself.
This was a hybrid class with 4 in-person sessions and she canceled 2 of them. Regardless, Alicia was super fair and gave good feedback. The class was a bit more challenging than I had expected due to the skills you are trying to develop. However, Alicia was great and marked fairly.
Was scared to take her class because I saw so many assignments on the syllabus, but honestly they are super easy and quick to do, and relate to the content and even your own life. She is so supportive and sweet.
Tough course, but the professor holds extra help sessions. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for studying and prep alongside the textbook.
Alicia was awesome! I highly recommend everyone to take this course with her. Very easy marker, she is super sweet and caring and the group projects were really good and you learn a lot. Whenever she was talking I couldn't not pay attention because she was so interesting to listen too!
In-person, Alicia gives students opportunities to ask questions and explore topics. Due to the course being offered hybrid, I found it a bit disorganized, unpersonable, and subjective (especially her marking). I would recommend this course IF it were offered fully in person.
Alicia was a great professor for this class. She is very knowledgeable of the course content and gave good feedback for each assignment. The assignments for this class consisted of weekly counselling dyads with other students, three total papers for each partner, and two exams. I will take her again if I have the chance!
I really enjoyed this class taught by Alicia. There is a group project that is worth 30% of your grade, eight assignments worth 40% total, and two exams worth 30% total. Sometimes, her marking was a little confusing, but overall, I would take her again. I feel that I've learnt a lot and she was able to keep the content interesting
she was a good teacher, often really nice. I emailed her a couple of times and most times her reply was rude or not answering my questions, so be careful. her class is easy, exams are online but she doesnt give any feedback. assignment are easy too. shes ok
4 assignments throughout the sem that require effort but she grades leniently so you're guaranteed a good grade (EFFORT THO). Group project easy (4ppl max). Lectures easy to follow and she's really laid back but has a lot of knowledge. She's straight to the point, I'd recommend. Exams were easy too, textbook heavy tho
