Lecture material is often different from textbook material. Assignments are very tedious.
he PURPOSELY tries to fail you, 13% bell curve for the first exam, no textbook or tutorial for extra help, assignments are IRRELEVANT to things studied in lecture, completely lost during the exam (guessed more than half)
Rafiee literally has no idea what he's talking about. His classes are extremely boring and have no relation to the textbook. Astronomy is an extremely interesting subject but DO NOT take this course with Rafiee, as he is terrible professor.
While Prof. Rafiee is a nice person, and is willing to help you during office hours, I was disappointed that there was no tutorial to have concepts further explained. Another downfall is that he tries to trick you on exams. A student can study very, very hard only to receive a poor grade, as the exams don't necessarily pertain to the lectures.
Rafiee is tricky and his T-A are useless. Overall, astronomy is very interesting since we learn about the universe, but you can't pay me enough to take another course with him.
By far the worst prof I have had in the past 3 years at York. His lectures are boring and he is all over the place. There is pretty much no point in attending his lectures other than the participation mark. I managed to get A by self studying. He makes the exams unnecessarily hard and tricky, just so students wont get a good mark. AVOID THIS PROF
He is always help you during the office hours. TAs are useless. You need to read and study about all lectures. All the test questions came from the lectures and homework. He gives more homework to help you understanding the materials. Get ready for the science.
I liked taking it with him. Told us to do the assignments to practice for the quizzes. Very clear, helpful when you ask questions. Do the assignments to prepare for the final.
AWESOME PROF. OR IN OTHER WORDS, AWESOME GUY. ENOUGH SAID.
Personally I like this professor very much for he is willing to help students no matter in office hours or by sending email, and he is really enthusiastic about his lecture, sometimes involves body languages, you'll enjoy his lecture
He used real life examples as well as himself in order to explain how the solar system works. I understood what he was talking about and was really interested the way he explained it
He's really inspiring and funny. Gives plenty of examples and makes sure everyone understands the material. Several assignments but nothing that'll kill you. Would recommend!
Awesome prof, always easy and awesome to get help from. Assignments are designed so that they are an easy A, if not 100. His tests can seem very confusing but they are very easy if you attend and listen in class, and go over the material.
Lectures are very slow and goes on everywhere. Nice guy if you go approach him. Questions are confusing on exam , to be honest not worth going to class if you want to good grades on exams.
I took this course for my NATS Gen. Ed requirement... it was honestly pretty easy.. solid class. He has an accent but he's a very funny guy and you can definitely understand him. Easy first year course that doesn't require a science background (I'm a law student)... just study the lectures, and you'll do fine on both exams (multiple choice)
Hilarious teacher, made course interesting, good amount of work for a gen ed course, easy A if you show up to class and do the homework.
Funny teacher! Class/reading can be a bit heavy but he makes the class interesting. Very easy to pass this course, and with some physics background you might even get an A. I have little science knowledge but still got a fairly good mark.
Rafie is a passionate prof and his lectures are interesting if you like the subject. He is funny and approachable if he is not too busy with other students. His exam questions are tricky but if you study very hard you can do fairly well. He has mini assignments and homework which he gives out high marks to make up for the exam.
He is a Really nice and great professor who understand students need and try to provide best solution. Very helpful if you attend his classes and toutorials as most of the exam is from in class and toutorial questions and he also provide bonus question on exam which is not that hard and help you bost your grade
I loved his class. He is super helpful and very passionate about astronomy. for his tests you need to know your stuff. especially know how to do his assignments. they are super easy if you put the time to figure them out. His online resources are helpful. studying only his lecture notes for test is not enough for A or A+. read the textbook
The most inspiring and intelligent professor I have ever encountered. He is exceptionally well at teaching difficult subjects with the ease of cracking existential jokes as the course progresses. I have enjoyed his method of teaching so much, that I follow him through every semester.
One of the professors I've ever had, he tells lot of jokes to make the lectures interesting and so good at explaining concepts. If you get any chance, defiantly take a class with him.
Not very organized with project grading. He made the whole class sit for 3 hours and didn't even finish grading everyone's work. Otherwise, he is alright. Makes his 100 MC exams tricky so it's hard to get an A on those unless you study really hard. Also boring monotone lectures hard to get through without falling asleep. Cracks jokes here and there
My favourite prof at York. He's very passionate about what he talks about. He's very nice and caring and makes you feel comfortable to ask questions in class.
Do not take a physic course with this prof, his knowledge about the course is non , he just reads of the slides , he doesnt even sign any practice question to do for the test and also he doesnt do any examples in the class , and also his TA doest know whats she is doing. If you take this course with this prof you are on your own .
Simply awful
He's good at teaching, I'll give him that, but he's also like a prison warrant (especially during the group seminars) and will drill down on you if he catches a slip-up or any "slacking". Also (to an extent) very rude. Doesn't do lecture recordings either so good luck if you're sick and need more than the slides.
Horrible. He teaches lessons as if he is teaching astronomy experts. NO ONE in the class knows whats going on. Everyone has to go home and do their own research and watch youtube videos to understand concepts. He even said "im here to confuse you not teach you"
By far the most CARING professor you will ever meet at York. He genuinely cares about his students succeeding and takes the time to go over material that's not understood. He really is one of my favorite professors. In my last year at York, I could have not asked to have a better professor.
Amazing prof. He cares about his students, would definitely take him again.
Terrible. Only did okay in this class b/c of my interest in Astronomy. He does not care about the success of his students; ask one question about a mistake you made, and he shows so much attitude and unnecessary rudeness. He does not explain how the student is wrong to better their understanding.
Horrible prof. He was honestly the rudest prof Ive ever encountered. Yelled at his students for no reason and made everyone feel stupid.
Not GOOD
Bad prof. Avoid him if possible. So far my worst physics prof by far
He talks so much about the theory side of physics that he never does any actual questions in class. He doesn't record his lectures so you're on your own if you miss a class. He uses the textbook provided powerpoints which is basically just the textbook. He's a nice guy outside of class but as a lecturer he's ok.
He speaks way too fast and doesn't give enough time to enter answers for iclicker. When students complain he just laughs them. It's not so funny for me to lose 5% participation marks from iclicker when it is the only reason to attend his class, since you're going to be learning from the textbook anyway because he is so hard to follow.
He talks waaay too fast and tends to go on tangents that confuse you even more. Does not give a break in a 3 hour lecture. Be prepared to study yourself via the Textbook and online resources.
most confusing professor i ever had, doesnt even know his own material.
He's probably the best professor at York University, initially, I had a rough time in a midterm since he changed my question paper and seat in between. But he gave me the path towards achieving good grades in Physics, to prove myself innocent. Very caring and genuine if you follow and ask doubts in office.
The course is already twice the speed but there are so many assignments it's unmanageable. Performance-based in-class quizzes have been shaving percentage points off my grade all semester. Tutorials are useless and the profs don't show you how to solve any problems at all. The textbook is unclear and poorly written with loooong chapters.
Terrible. refused to bell curve exams when student were getting in the 30-40%... does not know how to teach and is very rude and difficult to deal with.
Took his for into physic for life science. He was absolutely brutal, tried so hard to be entertaining at 9am and I could not deal with him. Exams class averages were 49% and 52% and he will not bell curve them. Did not encourage learning and dreaded going to his class. He is very rude, stay clear if you can. Would give an overall 0 if I could.
Probably one of the worst prof for 1st year Physics. It's bad enough for those that had him in Fall/Winter. I took it in the Summer and it was worse as the course was at double speed. Midterm was fairly tough with silly grading, and exam was really difficult with barely any relation to assignments. Just take 1420 in the Fall with a different prof.
I have no idea how he is rated so low on here. He has been a great professor so far (I am taking a year-long course with him). His tests are straight forward, his explanation of physics is easy to understand, and he's hilarious. Would recommend
A great prof for a good 1st Year course. Anyone looking to fill your NATS Gen-Ed credits, this is a good choice. Might even get you interested in doing Astronomy.
A great prof. Super passionate about physics. Would take again 100%
Prof. Rafiee has been my favourite prof at York so far. He encourages participation throughout class with his ICQ and bi-weekly group assignments. His lectures and slides are easy to understand, and goes over course material clearly and energetically. Above all, he clearly does care about the physical and mental well-being of his students.
one of the worst profs i have ever had. hes extremely rude. he comes off super nice but when you go to talk to him about something he just gives you this rude smile. He'll act like he is accomodating you but he really is not. do not believe on what he say because he can back off any minute. he is a snake and just acts like he cares about you.
He is honetly amazing because he would always boost students exam scores. His tests are all multiple choice so it should be easy to get an A. I feel like I could have gotten an A but I didn't because I had other course work to do so I didn't have much time to study for his exams. The content is heavy because it is three hours.
He is so good, he is my favorite prof at York.
This is my first time writing a comment on rate my prof. But I can for sure say he is one of the worse profs I ever had in YorkU.
Does weekly online multiple choice mini quizzes
great teacher, really knowledgeable . Will accommodate if needed.
one of the worst professors in the world. doesn't care about his students. goes through 6 chapters and then gives a quiz that we dont have enough time to complete. Says that the quiz will be multiple choice but gives calculation questions. Terrible professor.
He made the PHYS1801 labs and they are just awful, disorganized and so many mistakes.. no clear outcomes, etc.
The WORST prof ever. His tests and quizzes were hard. This course ruined my mental health. He doesnt care about students. Everyday he would make new rules last minute to make student lives harder . He had students do weekly quizzes that test like 6 units each and feel like midterms. You have no time to absorb the material. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!
I enjoyed professor Rafiee's class. He's funny and he explains his lecture slides so well and in depth. However, there is a lot of extras you have to do for the course especially mini tests. They're not too bad though. Overall, he's a really solid and understanding prof
He explains the material really well and you could see he's genuinely passionate about what he's teaching. Easy A if you do the reading and don't fall behind lectures because it's hard to catch up.
He is really nice, like extremely considerate and understands peoples situations. Even gave us an option if we could not buy the textbook and made a new marking scheme for us. Also essays are basically TA/ Checklist based and everything else is MC.
This guy is the worst person to have. He is so involved with himself and he runs his classes on bases of dictatorship. The autocratic power as a prof has gotten to his head. He responds rudely to email and unclearly. He belittles students and does not provide ANY HELP. Idk how these profs are still teaching. They need to be re-evaluated.
Wouldn't say he is the very best or amazing, however, I don't really understand all the negativity surrounding him. The course itself was fairly difficult, with much more complex concepts as compared to 1421. Other than a little more studying, everything ran smoothly in my opinion.
His personality is ok, the course itself is harder than PHYS1421. However heavy lecture and he puts quizzes weekly make me very stressful, as I dont have enough time to prepare for it. But quiz itself is helpful to prepare for midterms and final. Just remember to practice by yourself, dont rely on prof.
He is one of my favorite proffs at York. His lectures are really engaging and interesting, he is always available for extra help, and you can tell he really cares about both his students, and the subject. Our projects were very interesting and engaging, and even though the course was a lot of work, it was totally worth it - I learned so much!!!
I had Dr. Rafiee in Winter 2020; he was absolutely AMAZING!!!! I am surprised by the rating he has. He was approachable in-person and through email. With the shift from in-person to online, he did everything to make sure his students were learning and aware of the course expectations while enabling and helping his students to succeed in the course.
His tests suck, they are hard and give you little time to prepare
A really good professor and his course is super easy with a little bit of focus and understanding I guarantee an A.
The professor is pretty decent and fun at times. A ton of readings and tests are pretty hard.
He genuinely loves teaching this subject and cares about the students, that makes his lectures very interesting even though the subject can get boring sometimes. The tests are not hard if you study the material he provides. He is really nice, understanding and accessible outside of class. Probably my favorite prof. so far.
Tbh the prof is cool and chill. he changes the course format if the students dosen't like the current course format. if u are not able to submit any assignment in time if u email him he'll give u an extra day to submit it. the assignments and projects are easy. Always try to do the projects in his format and u will get a 100%. Overall a good prof.
Will not answer your emails. very rude professor and his tests absolutely suck.
Hes so obsessed with control and formalities to the point where the formalities he introduces make tasks harder. The weekly quizzes are designed so not everyone can finish them, and by his logic, this somehow separates the A level students from the B level? shouldnt getting a question WRONG do this?!? His lecture notes are also too dense and long.
Very nice and understanding, and genuinely cared about teaching properly. will def take him again in the future
Absolutely the worst prof ever, would make the test too heavy to fail you doesn't want you to do well, avoid him if you can
Lots of work involved in the class but the professor is very kind, often extending deadlines for those who need it. There is no textbook in this course but the prof provided sources for people to use if they like. Overall really enjoyed his course.
Do his homeworks and quizzes regularly and you should be good! He will also curve grades if the average is really low :)
He is the most straightforward and easy going professor at York. His exams are extremely simple as long as you attend his lectures. Questions straight from his slides!!!! Difficult to get below an A if you watch his lectures and difficult to get below a B+ just read the slides. If you study even a bit then an A+ is guaranteed. Very light course!
Horrible, cant explain crap.
Overall, the course requires a lot of self study. The professor was okay, but I found him to be unapproachable and harsh. The final exam was fair. A word of advice, study from lecture notes and do all suggested hmwk problems to be successful and attend all classes!
Professor Rafiee is a very genuine and caring instructor. Physics is tough so wherever you look, youre going to see low reviews for it, but he really wants the best for his students and while the midterm was tough, he curved quite a lot to compensate, and the final exam was more than fair, many things he told us would be on it... were on it.
This prof is ok, great lectures, fair tests and exam. But this accelerated course is hard. If you are taking it for general education, i won't recommend this course with this prof.
Terrible professor, doesn't follow his teaching plan. Doesn't care about students or physics, doesn't matter how much he pretends he does.
Not willing to explain topics in any more depth than required to solve any problem
It's my first year, and I was looking for a NATS course for a credit and decided to take this one, at first, I enjoyed it, however, he assigns way too much homework and only gives me a few days to complete it, maybe if this was a high priority course for me I would have enjoyed it more. However, since it's not, I won't be taking his class again.
Before I had enrolled, Rafiee had a decent rating which made me give his course a shot. IMO, Prof Rafiee is definitely capable of teaching, he speaks loud and clear and uses open body language to convey his message. However, Rafiee gives out quizzes which have not even been covered during lecture and his workload is too heavy for students to handle
not enough space to explain all the many many many reasons but this man does not deserve to be called a professor or respected as such because he does not have any knowledge
Amazing lectures
Taking this class online was the best choice for my natural science credit. Though some of the papers can be long he seems like an easy grader. The tests were in person but were very straight forward and he gives more then enough time to write. As it involves 50 multiple choice and you have 2 hours to finish. Very easy A as long as you study.
Best Prof! Answers emails super fast and always accommodates you wether its homework or a test. Lecture heavy at some times but explains material well. Would definitely take one of his classes again
He treats his students as though they are herds of cattle at exams. He has great enthusiasm for the topic but he is not a good teacher and is terrible at empathy and is very rude and creates an imbalance of power and also the way he treats his TA's are horrible - especially the female ones. However that may just be my own view.
The course consists of four unit tests, 5 easy homework assignments, and 5 research projects. He only includes the best 4 out of 5. His exams are easy if you study the slides. He is also accommodating and will give extensions if needed. I highly recommend taking his course!
There's three components to his class. IRP's (which are just research essays), homework quizzes, and exams. The first two are worth 20% each and the exams are 60%. The quiz and IRP is best 5 out of 6. He is hilarious and I really liked his teaching style. He is very lenient just the content is heavy. No interest in space but would take it again.
Great prof! Very lenient with deadlines and often gave extensions for papers and assignments. The grading scheme for everything was very straightforward. This was a great class to take for my NATS credit. The content was interesting and the professor gave great lectures as well.
You're bound to be taken care of and do good if you're willing to take interest and participate in his lecture. It's quite long though - 2 to 3 hours (1 section per week) so there's some fatigue at the end of the day. Very clear and helpful in determining your grade and take special attention to each of the students - if you ask for help.
He's a nice guy and ALWAYS extends the research paper deadlines. He's just pretty repetitive but overall can't complain. He doesn't try to trick you everything is given to you in the slides he posts but watch the lectures bc he does put some of that on the exams. I liked this class and if you can memorize and write a basic essay you will do great.
I found Dr. Ali to be very understanding and lenient. He gave out a lot of extensions through the year to the entire class because of one person asking. I also met with him on zoom to discuss a paper and he gave me a lot of really good feedback. He's very friendly and I think his classes were enjoyable. The exams were a little difficult though.
Awesome prof! I took this class for a gen ed requirement but ended up learning so much. His lectures are easy to follow and the test material covers exactly what he discussed. Always gave extensions for assignments as well.
Prof Ali was really great! He was super accommodating and willing to adjust his grading or assignments based on feedback. So receptive to questions and clearly interested and knowledgeable about the material. We had easy online homework and our class rep arranged meet-ups to study and do homework. Would recommend as a NATS GenEd course.
I found his class gave me a break from my other courses because all the material was so interesting. The exams are based on the lectures and he always gave extensions on the writing projects. His lectures were prerecorded and fun to watch. He's an easygoing prof and cares for everyone to do well.
He is a very good prof. He teaches very abstractly so it can become difficult to take notes, but if you attend lectures, solve the assignments, and read the textbook you'll be fine. Only negative thing to say would be the lack of practice questions. We had assignments which were similar to test q's but sometimes lack of assign q's before midterm
Alireza is a great professor, he cracks jokes during lectures and ensures that just about every lecture will stick with you. You must read from the textbook and take notes before class to succeed in his course. Attendance isn't necessary if you do that. He's accessible outside of class, replying to emails within the same day most of the time.
The professor is great - entertaining and supportive! Made physics engaging. Good understanding of middle school physics eases the course. It is imp to complete all the weekly quizzes and be present for the lectures, as the professor often shares additional info that is not included in the lecture slides. Noting these details is crucial for exams.
he is quite funny BUT in his lecture he went into detail about EVERYTHING you will lose interest, his exams were awful nothing from the stuff he taught. everything started to get super complicated on the exam but was okay in the lectures. if you are planning to catch up with his lecture slides its just random points from the textbook so good luck.
Good luck finishing the labs and tests in this course. Even if you know the material and the solutions, the time limit is absurd to ensure you don't succeed.
Worst teacher ive ever had, does not know how to teach and designs his tests to fail everyone. Tests are impossible to even finish with the unrealistic time limit he gives. He assigns 70 questions of hw to study for the midterm only to ask 3 word problems youve never seen before. Stay away from this guy do your physics credit somewhere else.
This is the only time that I've felt the need to leave a review for a professor. Syllabus stated that we will be get 80 minutes for the midterm which he did not comply with. Gave us 50 mins for 30 MC and 3 SA questions with 5 parts each. Not enough time. Useless slides, overcomplicates questions in lectures, belittles students. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
His lectures are entertaining and he is a funny and nice guy, but if you are looking for a good grade, I recommend a different professor. Our midterm had an absurd amount of questions and we were only given 50 minutes to solve them. We also get 30 minutes less on our final exam than the other physics class.
No one should have to deal with this professor as he does not care about his students, and has 0 empathy.
His lectures are entertaining and he is a funny and nice guy, but if you are looking for a good grade, I recommend a different professor. Our midterm was 50mins and we had 30MC and 3 Short answers and each short answer had like 5 different sub questions. Class Avg was like 30% and the final average was also 30%. He doesn't curve what so ever.
You wanna learn physics, take with him. You want a good grade, dont take with him.
Don't take physics with him if you want a good grade
He can't teach for his life. Loved physics before I took this class. His midterms are 50 mins long and overly long and difficult. Interesting course, horrible instructor. I suggest you take 1411 if he's the one teaching 1421.
Prof Ali is extremely passionate and frankly wonderful to work with. His lectures are clear albeit occasionally disorganized, and he is willing to field questions and make sure students understand concepts. Many opportunities to get marks in this course, and he is supportive. 10/10 prof!
Prof Ali is super helpful and flexible. His lectures are engaging, and the exams are fair if you stay on top of the material. Unstuck study was a game-changer for prepping for tests. Overall, a great class!
passive aggressive
Prof Rafiee is good at explaining concepts. He sometimes makes jokes and his videos are good to watch. There was a lot of content for the course, but the homework assignments were easy to get 100% on. The midterm and final exams were fair and the unit tests were also manageable. I also appreciate that he gave me an extension for the last unit test.
One of the worst prof ever.If you see his name. just run. He told that uni is not for everyone and he grades us on that basis.
I left a 3.0 review for his 1421. just wanna say he got better in winter for 1422. despite his teaching got less attracting and interesting, but his midterms and final were more fair this time. more time in final compared to 1421s final, more fair questions in midterm and final, more effective tutorial sessions and more curve. He got better.
One of the rudest profs I have ever encountered. He said extremely hurtful things to me in front of a whole classroom, 2 minutes before writing an exam. Just avoid interacting with him in person at all costs. Besides that, its an easy class. Just be ready for a ton of lectures.
