Decent prof. Lectures have a good balance between theory and examples. Posts all lecture notes (the actual notes he writes in class) online, as well as exercises, solutions, and a plethora of sample exams. Need to do some independent work, though. MathXL ass'ts and labs are very easy, so easy to get complacent and end up doing poorly on exams.
He has the most annoying voice that took a while to get used to. Posts all his notes online (though his writing is messy). Apparently very helpful in person. Hard MT (Avg was 48% uncurved) but he gives TONS of practice exams which are pretty much identical to his exams, so the key to getting a good mark is to DO ALL assignments/ practice exams
Notes are posted online, but writing is horrendous. If you do all his sample exams, the midterm is a breeze. Strongest accent ever but you get used to it. Never touched the textbook.
assignment is easy.... note posted on the e-class.... will explain anything that you ask, even though 'how to use a calculator'.... english not very bad.... TEST = BRUTAL!
Horrible Prof. I recommend you stay away from him unless you want to teach yourself. Horrible writing and hard to understand. His examples in the notes are so much easier than in the exam.. He tells you that you need to just come to class and listen and you'll be fine.. wrong. Drop stats with this prof if you have it
..........
Professor Simchi knows his stuff. When you go talk to him about something he is willing to listen and help you. If you follow his notes, practice his exercises, do practice exams, the final will be a breeze. Thinking of not showing up to class and "winging" his exams will be a huge mistake, considering it is A-J for each question.
This guy needs to write WAY MORE CLEARLY! Its a hard class but he does make a solid effort to cover everything thoroughly. Sometimes it seemed like he made easy things a bit more difficult by giving too much information but I guess thats more the ciricullum than him. Seems like a nice guy. Responds to emails. Accent is pretty thick.
In-class examples are much simpler than assignment questions, very strong accent (though you get used to it quickly), horrible handwriting, extremely boring lectures, BRUTAL midterm and final. Be sure to attend lectures even though he posts his notes online, otherwise you'll fall behind quickly. Not recommended.
Heavy accent but you get used to it. Notes are definitely all over the place and messy. Super hard midterm, but super easy final. He gives you assignment answers if you go see him. Don't bother with the textbook. Overall, not a terrible class; the lab is easy and the final was a joke. However, I'm sure there are better profs out there.
excellent prof. accent is not a problem. u will get used to it soon. bad handwriting, but u don't need to take down notes. all of them will be uploaded. chapter 1-7 will not appear on final as long as u take midterm. keep quite!
Amazing prof, but does not tolerate ANY talking in class. Attendance is not required, as he posts his notes to eclass. Overall, he explains concepts repeatedly and clearly, offering many examples. Study his notes for the midterm and final, and practice recent sample exams and you should do fine!
Lectures are very in depth with a plethora of examples for each section of the notes. 20 m/c in-class mid-term and 50 m/c final; although answer sheet has a-j (not a-d) so you need to know what you're doing. Not a hard A by any stretch, the tests are more than fair and mirror previous ones. So simply study the lecture notes and old exams.
Not bad. Once you can read his handwriting you don't have to come to class anymore because he posts everything online. Good examples. There aren't any surprises on midterm and final. The subject is boring but what do you expect.
Very hard to understand with his voice cracks with every syllable uttered, his accent and his very messy writing. His notes are REALLY good, but he is not. Good class if you are looking to teach yourself. WARNING: ALL OF HIS TESTS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE A-J. THAT IS 10 POSSIBLE ANSWERS FOR EACH QUESTION. You have to know what you're doing.
Very good! ! If you can understand his accent ,everything become perfect~
Very good teacher, he cares about his students. Very helpful when needed. Only thing, need to get used to his accent. He Posts all notes online so you can review, posts all past midterms, finals with solutions to study with. He is funny!
Notes are all hand written by him. His writing is messy and hard to read. He speaks loud and monotone. His final was impossible. He is overly condescending in emails.
I really have to give Dr. Simchi credit for actually caring. He wants students to succeed & is insanely nice in person. Hard class and you need to attend and pay attention to do well. His midterm was brutal but he made the final very easy to make up for it. Also really recommend taking with a friend. Simchi is one of the better stat profs out there
If you are not good at statistics then you should definitely show up to his class. His notes are good but he has extremely bad writing. His tests are all MC and there are many answers... he obviously understands the probability of guessing the right answer is low this way. Tests are hard ! It's even harder to understand what he is saying.
Awesome professor. Super easy if you do all the assignments, sample tests, and old exams. Made me LOVE stats! easy A
The class is not mandatory to go to. He literally posts EVERYTHING online. He's a really nice guy and I understood his accent just fine. His writing is kinda messy but that makes you focus in class. DON'T slack in the class because you don't have to attend, it will get to you in the end. Overall, easy!
He goes through notes extremely quick, and it is impossible to write down everything he needs to say. When he explains things he likes to scroll up and down the notes without any break so its really hard to understand. Impossible to understand, really bad accent. Makes the course hard even though it shouldn't.
Hard to understand
Thick accent and speaks super fast. Terribly messy writing. Doesn't respond correctively or caringly to questions. Midterm is A-J multiple choice, with an unreasonable amount of questions that are so hard that most of the class ran out of time (I ended up guessing on 12). About 100/250 people withdrew after that exam. DO NOT TAKE!
Terrible! Can't understand thick accent when he yells into the mike and his writing is too mesy to decipher. Goes through lecture notes too fast, thankfully on eclass. Said midterm avg should be in 70s and it was in 50s. Boring and dry class, labs helped, and followed examples to complete homework. Don't take stats with him!
I took his stat 151 and 252. He is very good prof.
Worst proff of my university life. He cant speak english, goes throught notes wayy to fast. His exams are mc with 8 choices for each question. If you have a question dont bother asking him because he wont understand you.
Pretty good prof! Compared to other first year stats, I hear he's good. He is very clear about what you need to do to get good marks, and very helpful if you go to office hours. You have infinite tries on homework (better get 100%). Just don't try to write notes in class. Best strategy is to pay attention in class, and copy the notes off eclass!!
His classes are boring, he posts notes on eclass which is good, but his writing is hard to read. If taking stats with him make sure to stay with it and copy his notes off eclass regularly. I thought. U have to work hard for an A .
I thought he was a pretty good prof. It was hard to understand him at first and he write notes fast but if you just listen and review your notes regularly then you could do well. Do his practice midterm and finals because questions on the exams are exactly similar to the practice ones.
An overall okay prof with a thick accent. Ensure to do most of the practice mutes and finals because the questions are similar.
He is a great prof. If you go to his class, the midterm and final are just what you'd expect. If you want to learn from going to class and not from having to study the textbook I highly recommend him.
Great prof. Textbook and attendance is not needed. Tests are derived from examples in notes, which and posted completed and non completed online. Crushed an A by skipping class and learning the examples from the notes. Also, a very caring and nice man. Easy to understand if you LISTEN instead of complaining and is never shy to repeat something
Excellent Prof. Explains everything you need to know for tests, and saves you money by not using the textbook. As long as you show up, LISTEN, and put in a little effort, A's and A+'s are within reach. He wants to see his student succeed.
Make sure to attend class to piece together what he says with what he writes as both have an iranian accent. Sense of humor on the guy and heart the size of a garage door. Friendly and helpful in office hours. Can tell he is a brilliant mathmachine, but easily capable of teaching to a 100 level class.
He is extremely hard to understand, especially if you are terrible with accents. His notes are also very messy and unclear.
If you can deal with the accent, very good. If you cant, buy the text and use his excellent notes. Exams are tough if you aren't prepared
He has a VERY heavy accent. His notes are extremely messy and when he writes them he goes WAY to fast to keep up.You don`t really need the text book but I personally find that it helps because he doesnt explain things 100%. You don`t really need to go to class because he posts all the notes online. Exam questions are all from notes and practice Q`s
At first I did not like him because I could not understand him with his heavy accent, but his notes definitely make up for it which he posts them online too! His notes are GREAT!!
Amazing professor who cares about his students doing well. His lecture notes are great and he tries to make his tests easy so students can pass. He has a thick accent and messy writing, but I found them to manageable. He is also really funny
Decent prof. He has a very thick accent and the handwriting of a 7 year old. His notes are good and he posts them online but they are usually hard to read. I learned more by teaching myself from his notes. I didn't use a textbook at all. Ali is a really caring guy and he tries his best. Tests aren't hard if you study.
Extremely thick accent and very monotone. He understands the concepts but paying attention in class is difficult, and contrary to what he says, his exams are extremely difficult even if you know the material well.
Strong accent and extremely boring. He switched his teaching method with two weeks left in the class, although the teaching method was better, it was too little too late, and he no longer posted class notes online once he changed. I would recommend doing anything in your power to not get this prof!
Switch classes if possible. If you can't, good luck studying hard from the textbook and practice exams.
Simci was an ok prof. Not the best to learn from as his hand writing is difficult to read. If you can take another section take it!
I only had him for a week however he was an awesome prof! His accent was a little hard to understand at first but once you got used to it he's funny and very helpful! His notes are thorough and helpful. I can't comment on his exams because I din't write any.
As statistics professors go, Simchi is excellent. This course is frustratingly difficult, but it is clear that he cares whether or not the students in his class do well. All of his lecture notes are posted online after class which meant not scrambling to write everything, and instead being able to focus on trying to understand the concepts.
Simchi is amazing. This course is very frustrating, don't be fooled by an easy first half of the semester, it gets way harder. His notes are messy and his accent is tough for the first couple days but they force you to go to class and listen which is really helpful. He truly does not want anyone to fail and shows it.
Simchi is a great prof. At first his accent seems very hard to understand, but just give it time and you'll get used to it. His hand writing is awful though so you'll have to decipher his notes. Do his exercises and practice tests and you'll do fine. Material gets harder after the midterm though, so keep putting in effort or the final will screw u
Simchi is a terrible professor! His accent is thick and his notes are confusing. Switch out if you can.
Thick Accent. Notes are illegible. Rambles and repeats himself in class. Going to class confused me, then when doing assignments and review I grasped concepts easily. Makes the course more difficult than it is.
All in all, he is a good professor. He puts efforts and also helpful to students.
Very thick accent, i loved math and was very good at it before this course. Most people just dont show up to class anymore because it just makes the subject so much harder than it needs to be
Very thick accent. Will spend whole class trying to keep up writing his notes and trying to figure out what he's saying. Recommend a different prof!
PROFESSOR WAS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AND WHEN TEACHING HE WOULD JUST MUMBLE AND RATTLE OFF NUMBERS NOT EVEN MAKING SENSE AS TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM. DID NOT DO THE FINAL OR MIDTERM REVIEW INSTEAD HAD TO PAY EXTRA FOR A FINAL REVIEW IN WHICH THE PROF WAS SO MUCH BETTER IN AN HOUR PERIOD OF TIME THAN SIMCHI WAS IN 3 MONTHS. FIND ANOTHER PROF!
Very difficult to follow in class. Would not recommend.
His accent isn't that hard to understand. He explains things over and over to make up for his accent, so if you like a prof to repeat concepts more than once he is awesome for this. His notes are really good. Makes jokes in class. Sit near the front and you will understand everything he says.
Simichi is a good guy and cares about the students wanting to do well. That being said it is not easy to do well class averages were around 50s for final and midterm. The assignments are insane so attend his office hours. Doesn't curve his class which I still don't understand GPA average 1.9, unofficially, not easy class!
He was a great prof and had put his lectures online for students to review. the midterm is super easy, but the final is way more difficult, the average was around 50 percent. overall i would have simchi as a prof again.
Simchi is a very sweet man. I felt that he really cared about his students but the way the subject material was approached made it harder than it needed to be.
Would not recommend taking a class from this guy.
This prof is very hard to understand because of his accent and he tends to repeat words which actually makes it hard to pay attention to the whole sentence. However, no attendance is required as all notes are posted online. 10% given for easy online assignments and 5% for participation. Midterm & final was very difficult. Don't expect a good mark.
Honestly he's a really nice guy and if you are having trouble GO to his office hours! He is quite hard to understand and follow. The mid term wasn't so bad the final was brutal class average was %53. I don't recommend this prof but if you have no other option DONT be fooled by how easy the course seems to be!!
Simchi puts his annotated notes online which was super useful. I showed up to classes for the first few weeks and then just used his online notes. By just using his notes and review material the midterm and final were really easy. Crushed the class average. Dont go to class just use his notes.
Class average for midterm was 55% - Math is not curved so this is a bad thing. Posts notes (messy and unclear) online, practice and sample exams, mandatory participation marks in class. Unless you are willing to work outside of class, avoid this prof. Unclear, and does not speak English well. Very poor teaching style, IMO.
do his practice midterms/finals and review his notes. If you do just that, A is within reach. His online notes are helpful for review
This class is not scaled so no worries about others not trying and getting free marks. Posts complete notes online, sample tests/exercises (exam questions come from here). Mandatory participation marks in class that can be done anywhere in the world as long as you have internet. Don't even have to go to class. He has a great teaching style, IMO.
The course itself is easy enough if you put a little effort in, but that doesn't change how astoundingly boring it is. A Simchi has to have the most boring, monotone, hard to understand voice I've ever heard, and on top of this, he barely explains any of his calculations, leaving the students to really connect the dots. Would not recommend at all.
Simchi gives amazing notes! For exams, review his notes once or twice and do ALL his practice midterms and you will ace this class. :)
This class is super hard on its own but his guys printing is dreadful. I usually don't have a problem with accents but I found it hard to understand him. Maybe it was that he was extremely monotoned and the class material was super dry.?
2014 winter semester, I am in his class currently, actually done now thank god! Class average for his final exam was 51%. Avoid at all costs, very hard. His class is the hardest, although i am taking very competitive science courses. You can't understand a thing he is saying, and his notes are the same, obscure and misleading.
Had him in the winter semester of 2014. Don't take the class with the prof, unless you are willing to teach the class to yourself. He's monotoned and if you struggle with material like this you won't do well. Also, thick accent throws you off alot. Better profs out there than simchi.
Don't listen to the people saying not to go to class. I am certain that is why the averages were so low. He posts a TON of midterms and finals on eclass and optional homework assignments that show you how to solve the problems step by step, use them! Stats is actually incredibly easy if you're willing to put the time in.
Simchi is a really nice person. The class is a tough class, and his accent is an adjustment, but if you practice and put in the time you will do well. He is really nice about his office hours too! JUST PAY ATTENTION AND GO TO CLASS! He is a good prof.
He is a great prof and quick with answering questions via email. All his notes online so don't go to class, just read over his notes and do ALL the practice questions
Professor is very unclear, thick accent and monotone speaking voice makes it difficult to understand and maintain an interest in his lectures. I eventually gave up, read the textbook and it all worked out fine.
Yes his accent is super tough to understand. But if you show up, listen, and take notescopy the notes he posts online (which is all of them) you will be fine. I personally enjoyed the class and don't dread going. It is not too hard if you try and do all the assignments and practice questions. I would recommend to people who care.
Dr Simchi is an amazing prof who TRULY cares for his students and is more than willing to help. He posts numerous practice questions from past exams. The midterm had at least 5 questions that were identical to the practice. Stats is not an exciting course but if you pay attention in class, practice and put in the effort it's not hard to pass.
Dr. Simchi was a very confusing prof. to understand for most of the semester. He has a thick accent and speaks monotone, his notes are disorganized, so you must take time to read them after lecture. Also, his handwriting is pretty awful. If you do the practice questions and go to his office hours for help as soon as you need it, you should do fine.
Thick accent, but speaks slow enough that you can understand most of the time. His notes are great and he posts lectures online, plus he has a ton of review material which is really helpful. The class is super boring though
He has a thick accent but is understandable. Labs are tough but do at home. I found him very hard to pay attention to in class, but the material is really not that challenging.
Simchi monotones and has a thick Middle Eastern accent. His lectures are sometimes boring but they prepare you well for the midterm and final. Completion of online homework and lab assignments are crucial in this class! He posts complete notes online for easy access but his writing is not the neatest. His classes usually get the highest averages
Simchi is a fair marker; he shows what to expect on exams with Top Hat questions that he puts right into the exams. Very fair.
Takes some getting used to but a good man who has a sense of humour if you look for it. Very smart and helpful notes but awkward to talk to in person if you need help. Sometimes his microphone falls off but he doesn't fix it. Attendance is important because he utilizes the Top Hat and participation is a fair amount of your grade. Highest average.
Haha, I took my chances with Stats this term... It was an interesting subject--kind of like solving puzzles. However, his first language is not english, and some times his pronunciation is so rough you miss entire sentences... He has a tendency to give mixed messages "Please ask questions..." but when you do its received poorly. Not the best prof.
Ali cares about his students, but more often than not his students don't care about Stats. Gives tons of practice questions from old exams that are word-for-word on the midterm and final. Accent easy to understand. Sit near the front, you'll learn a lot more. Easy to pass. Mark determined by effort you put in. Assignments and labs easy, exams hard.
His extremely monotone voice made it very easy to fall asleep in class but most likely he doesn't care. Once you get used to his accent you'll have no trouble understanding his lectures. Clearly shows what you need to do when you approach every problem. Labs and exams are decent. He hates emails so if you have questions about anything, go to office
Simchi may be hit or miss. Realistically, the lectures are hard to get through as he likes the hall to be dark (promotes sleepiness) and is difficult to understand unless you're in the first 3 rows of the room. Sometimes he cracks a joke or two. Buy the online codes, the textbook is unnecessary.
Dr. Simchi seems to really care for students, can be a little gruff and intimidating but IS nicesweet side. This class can seem easy at first but IT'S NOT. I fell behind, stopped going and failed the course. DO NOT fall behind. Go to every lecture and GO TO OFFICE HOURS if you need help. If you get behind, it will be extremely hard to catch up.
Professor Simchi was a great professor, super helpful if you ask him questions. He also lets you know exactly what common mistakes are made in exams, and really highlights what types of questions you should pay attention to. Also gave ample practice questions through TopHat; the exams were practically at the difficulty level of Top Hat questions.
Took me all of two weeks to see he was useless. Textbook was my teacher. Just don't take his class for the love of all things good.
Very hard course. Prof didn't make it any easier. One person in whole class got an A.... Class average of 1.8 gpa
DONT MISS HIS CLASS
His lectures are pretty dry, but thats sorta expected with stats. He uploads his lecture notes on eclass, which are incredibly helpful when studying. He also posts quizzes that are a MUST do for studying for the midtermfinal. Their pretty similar to the kind of questions to expect on the test.
Run. RUN FAR!
Terrible prof, would NOT recommend. I attended lectures of a different prof and learned the material by myself. When I went to Simchi for help he was rude and condescending.
Completely incomprehensible (both monotone and thick accent - not his fault, but not helpful) doesn't let you take notes in class. Don't bother going. Textbook and TA's taught me everything. Avoid at all costs!!!
Not a good prof, his speech is difficult to understand and you aren't allowed to take notes in class. Online practice tests are helpful but the notes that come with them are poorly explained.
Simchi explains concepts throughly and provides lots of examples in class. He can be difficult to understand sometimes as he talk softly with an accent, but it is manageable if in front rows. Must attend class because even tho he posts his written notes, but it is both messy and missing some important information.
I ADVISE YOU ALL TO SIT NEAR THE FRONT because he does have a thick accent and speaks very softly. Also, do you assignments major part of your grade. He does not allow you to take notes in class oddly enough, and he goes way too fast for you to do so, he post notes online but you can't read them so just try and keep up.
Simchi was an amazing prof! If you just pay attention and regularly review, the class will be a breeze! He explains all concepts very well and posts practice quizzes that are key to getting a good mark on the midtermfinal. I did bad on the midterm because I crammed the night before but I got an A on the final through reviewing ahead of time.
The reason ppl do bad in this course is because they fall behind. If you review once a week and pay attention in his class you're guaranteed a good mark. He tells you what will be on the tests and common mistakes students make. Simchi knows this class and all exam questions like the back of his hand! I would take this class again in a heart beat.
He may be hard to understand at times, but if you talk to him and show interest he is very nice, helpful and it feels like he really does want you to succeed which I respect alot. His classes are pretty rushed but I guess that's because of how much material needs to be covered. Make sure to keep up with the work or you're going to have a bad time!
Dr. Simchi is the only reason I would ever take another stats class. He can be slightly hard to understand at times, but if you understand the concepts being discussed you won't have any trouble. He tells you what type of Q's you'll see on the exam and is always willing to help you out when you need it. If you're in stats, join his class.
Very helpful professor, although if you skip class because he posts his notes online you will fall behind. He explains his notes as he goes over them in class, so if you aren't there his notes are very confusing. Stats is a tough course so you need to stay focused. He loves to help as I would visit him frequently during his office hours.
The accent makes me hard to understand and the handwriting is hard to make sense and did not give the clear guide and help
He is really hard to understand. Really really hard
This prof talks so fast and I cannot catch up. His lectures are not helpful, I can totally just go through the power point by myself.
Mr. Simchi is intelligent, but isn't skilled with lectures. He doesn't outline lectures, so they won't make sense until the end. Read the textbook; it will help so much. If you do, his examples are great study material! He has technical difficulties with computers very often. He means well, but you need patience + focus to understand lectures.
His practice questions are amazing. They are an excellent representation of what to expect on the exams. His lectures are tough to understand if you don't know what he is talking about. But if you understand the course content, ei what test to use under each circumstance you can succeed. He has one of the highest class average each sem. a 1.9 (C)
Take it from me. I had to take stats twice, and my first prof was Paul, he was great but he taught it in a way that was harder for me to understand. Ali teaches stat in a way thats easy to understand, but its really hard to understand his accent sometimes. If you understand him, keep the course, if not then consider switching.
Dr. Simchi has a brutal accent which greatly limits understanding. His powerpoint annotations are also very messy. However, he is very helpful in office hours and provides tons of helpful practice quizzes/tests. All tests were MC which was helpful. Very clear about what to expect on tests. Do all of the practice he provides and you'll do well.
Dr. Simchi is a good lecturer, but don't skip his class! Decent prof.
Simchi was an amazing prof! As long as you pay attention in class, you'll understand what he's talking about! He makes stats easy to understand. He simplifies a lot of concepts and examples. All examples used in class were similar to final exam. He is also helpful in and outside of class. I would recommend Simchi if you are determined to pass.
He does have a sever accent however his lectures make sense. He gives a couple questions (not for marks) at the beginning of the lecture so you can see how well you know the last classes material and also some at the end of the lecture to see how well you understand what happened in the class. He posts his notes online but has messy writing.
He has a really strong ascent, but you will get used to it somehow. If you need stat as an requirement, join his class!
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS I REPEAT DONT TAKE HIS CLASS! Worst prof! You go to class and won't understand anything that is going on. I practically had to teach myself the entire course. SAVE YOURSELVES DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Dr. Alireza Simchi has an accent but it's alright, you have to focus during his lecture as he can explain the material well, the notes and examples are great and never skip his class, please take his class
Both of his class for Fall 2016 have the 2nd and 3rd highest average during the midterm, self explanatory. I never used my textbook because his notes and lectures (don't skip!) are awesome (print his notes and write along in class), he explains kinda quick in certain parts but he has to cover 24 chapters of STAT 151 material. Good prof!
He's actually a great prof. He tries really hard to get you into the subject and he puts out surveys for us to fill out throughout the semester so he can improve his teaching. He always tells us to pay attention specific parts of the material because he knows it's a common mistake most students make on the exam. Overall he's great.
Probably the worst prof ever. He's said to have the "highest" averages.... a high average of 52%.... and clearly states he will not curve it. I would never recommend his class to my worst enemy. If you take his class prepare to struggle.
He's the best! He gave a lot of practice questions and made sure to explain concepts with the simplest terms, I actually considered doing another stat class because of him. He has a slight accent but it is not bad to understand it once you get used to it
He is a nice guy and explains concepts well, but his accent can be really hard to understand. If you have trouble with accents, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Ali is nice but incredibly hard to understand his accent and read his writing. Second time taking the course and it was harder this time than the first
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. practice like a mad man 2 weeks before final and a week before midterms. if not u shall fail.
Prof Simchi was great. Statistic is a tough class but I felt that he broke it down very reasonably and tried very hard to adjust his teaching style to the needs of his students. He also got us to do practice questions in class which were very helpful. He's very kind and cares about the success of his students. Highly recommend!
This course is DIFFICULT and mostly BORING. The prof is not bad, he is always willing to help. There is homework for each chapter. I cannot understand his weird accent. Read the notes and read the textbook. He can do nothing with your grades or the tests. It is not easy to keep awake in his class, drink some coffee maybe that will work.
Alireza Simchi was an amazing prof! He is extremely kind and genuinely wants his students to succeed. His lecture notes are great, however sitting through his lectures can get boring at times. If you practice and put in the time, this course wasn't bad at all!
Pretty great prof. If you do his practice questions and attend class you should have no problems.
I didn't use the textbook. Lecture notes provided great detail with many examples. Ali explains everything very clearly and wants his students to do well. DO THE PRACTICES QUIZES AND EXAMS! There were questions nearly exactly the same as the practices questions on exams. Study and you will do well.
Does not have very good audio systems in place. Accent can be somewhat hard to understand. Needs to warm up to a class before he becomes half way decent.
Alireza is definitely a very nice person and he tries very hard to make lectures understandable. However, I found his accent to be so heavy and his writing so messy that it was not even worth attending class. I ended up teaching myself the material through the assigned homework and textbook during class time. Try to get different prof if you can.
He emphasizes the importance of attending lectures, completing assignments and doing textbook readings. He reminds students to keep up with the fast pace of the course, gives helpful tips, showing that he cares. He is a tough prof, but he is willing to help those who need it.
STATS 151 is completely standardized so you'll encounter the same difficulty from any prof. He has a thick accent but really tries and gives good practice and lectures to prepare you for the tests and labs. once you get past his accent he's really good.
Simchi has an accent but is such a nice person. He does tons of examples and has tailored his teaching style to best benefit students. He does reviews of sections once they are finished and wants each student to do well.
Class is challenging but all manageable, follow everything prof Simchi says ex. review after class, do practices etc. and you will get good grades. I followed all of his suggestions and got a A+. Very good prof, cares about your study, always asks students about suggestions. explains concepts very well, does everything to help you. Recommend.
I'm a student who needs to be precisely told what is going on in simplified terms when it comes to math, and as nice of a person as Asmichi is, I had a very difficult time in his class. He is knowledgeable at what he does, but his teaching style did not personally help me. If math is something you struggle in, I wouldn't advise taking this class.
His accent is horrible and his writing is also very messy
Despite having a heavy accent, papa Simchi really knows his stuff. Honestly a really smart person, and his notes are the best out of all the other profs. He really goes deep for that y-bar. Before this year, I didn't even know how to do a teetee test. In all seriousness, I think this guy gets discriminated because of his accent, but hesactuallygood
Dr. Simchi is a pretty good professor, but he has a thick accent that is hard to understand and his writing on the notes is pretty messy, which can often lead to confusion. However, he gives great advice on how to succeed and seems to really care about his students. The way his notes are organized make them very clear and he gives many examples.
Simchi is a great proffesor and very caring, if you don't mind him having an accent i suggest taking his class. All stats 151 classes have the same midterms/finals
Simchi is very hard to understand. All his lectures consist of him writing notes on top of prepared notes he has already put together and his writing is very hard to understand. He posts notes online so attendance isn't mandatory. In e-mail exchanges he was often unclear with what he meant and came across rude a few times.
Here's the deal: Simchi is a good prof. He's nice, he's honest about what it actually takes to succeed on exams, and he clearly knows what he's talking about. Sometimes he teaches concepts that are not on the midterm and final and, even though he thinks they help to clarify things, most times it just makes it more confusing.
First of all, I love Simchi and it's clear he loves his students and wants them to succeed. His slides are posted online after class, which is very helpful, but the bottom line is that he is VERY hard to understand. The extra resources he provides are almost necessary, but it seems he knows that. Simchi is a good prof, just hard to understand.
Ali's main goal is to have students succeed. He gives lots of practice exams which is very helpful for studying. The labs and homework are a grade booster as long as you pay attention in class and review the notes. If you go in with a positive attitude, the motivation to work hard, and the ability to not fall asleep in the lecture you will do fine!
This instructor has a very heavy accent. Since his English is not good, he cannot explain those stats concept clearly, which means you have to memorize those knowledge without understanding. It is a very bad way to learn stats. I can barely understand him in class, so I have to search on internet of read textbook, which wastes a lot of time.
I found Simchi did have a thick accent, but it was usually easy to understand what was going on as he wrote down most things he said during the lecture. He was very clear with his instructions on how to be successful in the course and made sure to get students' feedback on his teaching on several occasions to help them be successful.
Stats 151 is fairly tricky no matter who is teaching it. Simchi isn't an amazing lecturer given his accent, but he really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. Nice guy. But I would NEVER take stats again :P
Terrible lecturer and has a VERY thick accent. Claims to take students feedback into account but never makes any changes. Went to him for help and he was condescending, rude, and told me I was stupid for not understanding the material. Avoid at all costs.
He did a great job teaching this course. His explanations were detailed and clear, and he frequently pointed out common mistakes students make. He genuinely cares; he makes a point of reminding the class to do homework and contact group members. Having him as a prof made the course much more manageable!
yes his accent can be difficult to understand sometimes, but his notes are top notch. you dont necessarily need to go to every single lecture he went to, bc he uploads inclass notes. for the midterm and final just skim through his in class notes a few times and you should be set.
Yes he has a really thick accent but you get used to it. He takes his time through the hard concepts and does a ton of examples in class. He tells you exactly what you need to know for exams and his practice problems are great.
Simchi is a great prof that really cares about his students. As long as you do your homework and pay attention in class, you will do fine in the class. He has an accent, but you get used to it.
Stats is always difficult, that wasn't my problem with this class. Ali Simchi has a very thick accent, which I also don't have a problem with. But he is very hard to understand, and gets mad when his lecture of 300+ students doesn't answer his questions. He comes off quite condescending, and is constantly revising mistakes in emails and homework.
Simchi has some amazing notes, seriously, even if you're in another section, his notes will be helpful. I didn't find his accent terrible, but understand other people's gripes with it. You can learn all you need for the standardized STAT 151 exams from his notes and the textbooks alone, but attending lectures will still help tremendously.
Papa Simchi is a beautiful man. He really goes deep for that y bar, and his notes are good, lots of examples. 10/10, has an accent, but he's honestly really smart. Do the practice quizzes; super helpful. Gonna miss you Simchi!
Not the greatest prof. Strong accent, monotone voice, talked very slowly, but nice enough. His notes are decent, but you can learn just as much off of Khan Academy tbh. The exams weren't too difficult, but the lab portion was absolute hell. If you get stuck in his class just go to someone else's lecture, they're all the same.
Simchi is a very kind person and very helpful and friendly when approached. However, his lectures are extremely dull and it does not take long until you are lulled away by the repetitive, monotonous, and eventually indistinguishable-from-the-last-sentence style of his combined accent, teaching style, and well.. the fact its stats. Use Khan academy.
Nice enough guy, Hard class. It does not help that he is hard to listen to from his accent and monotone voice. Try not to skip class like I did. Luckily I had good partners in most my group projects, but group labs with random people in a 100 level often mandatory class is not great. Find another prof to take or even to go to their lectures instead
He really clearly cares about how his students do and he makes funny jokes sometimes, but he does have an accent and can be a little hard to understand sometimes. I sat at the front of the class and I think that made it better. If you struggle he will be more than willing to help you outside of class. Class was just overall hard but hes a great guy
Simchi overall is a good man. You can tell he really cares about his students and emphasizes quite a lot how important it is to pay attention in class. He is kind of repetitive and it's harder to understand him because of his accent, but if you pay attention you can understand what he wants to say.
Dr. Simchi is a fantastic prof! He has a heavy accent, but he knows it so he tries hard to get his point across and make things easier for the students in the class. His tests are very straightforward and if you make time to see him in his office hours, he is actually very helpful (and will sometimes just give you the answers )!
Alireza made me hate stats like there is no tomorrow. he'll straight up tell you that half of the class fails stat 151 on the very first day. his notes are all over the place. you need to work really really hard to pass his class. I don't recommend him at all if you have any other choice.
Aside from the heavy accent, Simchi is one of the better Stat 151 profs. He is very helpful during his office hours and genuinely wants to help you. Lectures are heavy and although he posts annotated notes online, he takes lots of notes on paper he doesn't post, so go to class.
He is really friendly and care about his students. Although his English has accent, he writes down almost every words he says. Do know how to teach. But you have to work for it. International students friendly.
mah boy!
Simchi is a great prof. His notes are very useful and give a good idea of what to expect for exams and he always uploads them online after class. During his office hours, he was very helpful. I sat in his tuesday thursday lectures, so my only complaint is that they can feel a bit boring and monotonous by the end.
His accent is very hard to understand, and then he says he writes things down so you can understand what he's trying to say, but his handwriting is worse. I had to withdraw because he didn't teach well. I had to teach everything myself.
He knows statistics really well but is not able to relate it in a way that is easily understood. Lectures are dull and his accent is difficult to understand. Lecture notes are handwritten and his writing is difficult to read. The class is not curved and the Lab component takes up a significant portion of time.
This prof was not horrible but he constantly makes references to why other students have failed the course, making it seem very scary and difficult to pass. He's very willing to help outside of class but his accent makes him hard to understand, he posts his notes but they are really messy and hard to understand.
Yes, the lectures can be boring and he has a strong accent, but he does a very good job teaching this course.
I have seen kindergarten students with better writting.
Boring dude
Don't do it. If you care about your grades. DON'T DO IT.
Great guy who cares and tries his best for you to understand. He literally stays after class for hours until he answers everyone's questions. He makes sure you understand the concepts in class. He uses great examples and answers emails quickly. Best stat prof out of the other 4 profs.
Simchi is very knowledgeable but most of the time it was hard to understand how he was explaining things so I often turned to YT videos instead of going to lectures. His speaking and writing were also occasionally hard to comprehend, unfortunately. He sounded mad or frustrated when ppl asked questions, overall he the opposite of enthusiastic.
He really cares about his students. He responds to emails asap. You have to put in the effort to pass this course though. Overall great prof!
He is a bit dull to listen to sometimes, but he really does put in the extra mile during lectures, recording videos for us in his spare time. I find his notes to be thorough and overall great in quality (his handwriting isn't that bad). He seems to get a bit annoyed by questions, but just because we don't have too much time to cover everything.
Easy to tell he's very knowledgable on what he's teaching, which is appreciated. Super quick to respond to emails but responses can make you scared you did something wrong. He's not very enthusiastic, but overall appreciated his effort he put into the class, especially with the switch online.
Very kind prof that genuinely wants you to succeed, given you take the effort to attend the lectures and be caught up with homework. Even stays after class to answer questions. Although his accent is a bit difficult to understand at first, he's a great teacher. Would definitely recommend.
Prof. Simchi definitely knows his stuff when it comes to stats and wants students to succeed in the course. He answers all questions and will stay after the lecture to answer questions. Lectures were also all recorded. His accent can make it a little hard to understand him and his writing isn't the best. He also tends to go over the set class time.
Had him for 8 am and could barely stay awake, he speaks extremely slowly. He lacks any enthusiasm, and despite reiterating how he is "happy to help" with questions, he would almost angrily ask people to not interrupt the "lecture" with questions. His writing is almost completely indecipherable. Buy the textbook because you'll be teaching yourself.
Put simply, this class sucked. Hours worth of notes to be completed outside the class every single week, while the lectures were just him doing example problems. Terrible handwriting made notes very hard to follow. Lectures felt very disengaging, and the course moves so quickly while the lectures and videos are so slow. Would not take again.
Professor simchi really cares for his students. He really knows what hes talking about and knows the course material very well. His examples in class are useful and he makes an effort to try to get students on track. Ultimately it is up to the student to stay on top of class by watching the lecture videos which is a given to succeed in this course.
His live lectures were "optional" (he would just go over practice problems) but they were incredibly helpful. He explains concepts clearly and goes through them in detail. He isn't the most enthusiastic person ever, but he truly cares about his students.
Stats is a course many people struggle with, but Dr. Simchi is amazing at explaining the concepts. The notes themselves are pre-recorded but in his live lectures, he goes through each question style and also explains the theory behind the stats. Overall if you put in the effort, do ALL the practice questions and ask for help, it's an easy A.
I heard some bad things and knew a lot of people struggle with stats. I was pleasantly surprised with how good Simchi was. Super duper nice in office hours, he has a very different teaching style but give him a chance! I think he is a gem! Pay attention make good use of the filled notes he posts, practice!. Found content effortless after a bit!!
He's a real jem. The way he explaions things may not be the most popular, but give him a chance and you'll find him to be the best stats prof there is.
I was definitely wary of his teaching style at first but throughout the semester I found it to be effective. He has you watch pre-lecture videos and then he goes over questions in class. In my opinion to get a good grade you have to do the example questions as they are similar to ones on the final/midterm. He has lots of office hours as well!!!
So he is not a bad person, but he's not fit to teach people. When someone asks a question, it sounds like he's annoyed that a question is asked. He also makes you watch very long videos on your own and then come to class and do questions. It's not the most efficient way of learning a difficult course. His writing is also illegible sometimes.
A lot of people say that STAT 252 is a gpa booster, but that's ONLY if you take it with Gregory Wagner. Unlike in STAT 151, the prof makes the exams in 252, and Simchi's exams were HARD. SO MUCH of the material on the exam was stuff he NEVER covered in class. Wagner's class average for 252 was 3.5, Simchi's was 2.8.
He is a great guy, and he does try his best to teach well. His writing is not the most legible at times. I dont really have a problem with him I just think stats itself is way too hard theres too many things due and you have to watch separate long videos + come to lectures, modules, labs, and exams are hard
Dr Simchis class was so painful. The day before classes were supposed to start, he switched us to online "unofficially". We also had to watch about an hours worth of videos before the lectures, making it online asynchronous??? He was also very impatient and discouraging to students who were struggling, even though he was the one at fault.
this was supposed to be an in person class and then he moved it a day before classes start. then he made you watch hours worth of information which took forever. your expected to come to class with all the videos watched. he's also kind of inconsiderate when other students are struggling. he seems upset when you ask questions
He is an okay prof, but he speaks too slow, just watch Rosana's videos. Her videos helps so much
I didnt like Professor Simchis teaching style at first but as the semester went on, I really appreciated it. He mostly does practice exam questions during class and explains the content that way. I was skeptical at first but trust me it will save you on the tests. He cares about his students and will spend as much time as you need in office hours
Handwriting not easily readable in lectures. Medium-high workload (Bi-weekly homework and labs + weekly lecture questions).
This professor is terrible. His monotone voice, tough accent, and incomprehensible writing make it impossible to learn anything, not as if he teaches anyway. Be prepared to teach yourself using videos from another prof and try not to fall too behind. You can do the assignments until you get 100, and there is a detailed video for doing the labs.
Never went to a lecture because all he would do is yell at you and ask for you to wait for a question. 10% was free from online homework modules, 10% for online labs which were quite easy - follow the video, and 80% for 80 questions between the midterm and final. High-stakes class, but just do exactly as they tell u without trying to understand it.
Definitely one of the best STAT 151 profs, as he provides many examples and problems on eClass for you to do. They prepare you very well for the assignments and exams. Many profs get behind schedule for STAT 151, but not Simchi. Prepare for a decent amount of work to do in this class, but that doesn't vary with profs, just how the course is set up.
Tells you what you need to know, and his practice questions are chosen so you won't find yourself hanging out to dry during the midterm/final since they're appropriate in difficulty. Also cares a lot for his students, and will clarify anything if you ask, I'd definitely recommend for STAT 151.
You're basically teaching yourself, you have to watch about 3 hours of pre-recorded videos outside of class and then do the practice question for the module. The only reason to come to class is checking your answer and maybe learning something. I will admit, his methods is good for midterms and finals as it forces you to practice and do the work.
The stats material is already challenging on its own, but his course format is makes it worse. In lecture he doesn't teach but goes over questions with VERY poor + confusing explanations w/o giving context. Don't take his section unless you absolutely need to, and utilize the available material from the other profs as much as you can.
The course material is quite boring but to be fair, it's statistics so that's inevitable. He's a great professor and puts effort into his class. Pro tip: Pound a few cups of coffee before class.
Not the worst prof...however his lectures are super boring. Paying attention in class was very difficult, and I would not take one of his classes again.
I took this course last year spring semester and just noticed that he has such bad reviews :( Prof Simchi isn't mean, he's a straight baller and knows his stats. He will not continue until he is SURE that you understand the content. Coolest dude in the department :)
Lectures are not useful at all, examples are rushed and writing is hardly legible.
Here's a guy that KNOWS his stats. His lectures tend to be dry but the material is very easy to absorb if you watch his pre-class videos. What I like about him is that he takes his time after each topic to make sure everyone understands what he just said, and his notes are much easier to understand than Paul Cartledge's.
This guy says the same thing 14 times every lecture. Be ready to same the same diagram explaining population every class for the rest of the year.
Really great prof. He explains everything very well and goes slow. He asks if we have questions all the time. He's really nice and passionate. It is in general a harder class but if you have trouble he gives so many resources to get help like videos on his eclass. He genuinely wants everyone to do well. It is a difficult class but he makes easier.
Dr. Simchi made the course seem like kindergarten level math. The course in general is extremely easy if you do the practice questions even once. Only bad thing about the course is the group projects, the projects didn't help at all and I hope that future students don't need to do these
Awful, difficult to understand with his a thick accent, and the most horrendous hand writing I have ever seen, looks comparable to a newborn holding a pencil for the first time. His lectures are pointless since you can't understand him and can't read his writing. If he is the final option, you have access to other profs' notes on eclass so use them
This prof is a really chill guy... however his accent makes it hard to comprehend what he is saying. He knows his stuff for sure - very organized. I genrally don't like stats so I can't blame him for not liking his course so even if it is not him as my prof, I am never taking another stats course in my life. Good guy
Try not to hold stats against Simchi, he's one of the nicest profs I had this year. He's is a good lecturer, answers emails very thoroughly and quickly, and is so nice if you go to office hours. He genuinely wants to see you do well. His accent and handwriting can be tricky, but if you actually show up to class and put in the effort you'll be set.
Very passionate and caring instructor, who wants students to succeed. Goes through examples for each concept completely, from listing variables to stating conclusions, so things become instinctive. His accent isn't as big an issue as people make it seem, but take your own notes because his posted notes are difficult to decipher.
His lectures are tough to understand. I mostly had to study from other professors' notes.
Very difficult to stay awake in his class and his accent can make it difficult to understand him sometimes
I failed Stat 161 with Simchi by less than a percent. It's truly a hard class and I feel the prof you take won't make much of a difference. the main issue is how this class is graded (80% on tests). Simchi seems nice but personally I didn't learn much from his classes Tip to anyone doing/going to do this class, rly focus on the homework and labs.
I found this class very difficult and the lectures were not very helpful. Outside of class, Professor Simchi is very easy to reach and clearly cares about students, which I greatly appreciated. Overall I think if you are capable of teaching yourself material Simchi is a good Professor to have, but if you rely on lectures I wouldn't recommend him.
Simchi was so kind outside of class when I had difficulties with my lab group. I figure that this class is difficult regardless of professor as math is not my strong suit. The lectures were a bit difficult to understand but if you asked for help he would definitely get back in a timely manner. Just do the homework and the labs and you will pass.
He is so difficult to understand and monotone it was impossible to get through a lecture. I dropped out and will take this course again next year with a different prof. This is a snooze lecture I'm glad I dropped it.
He was so hard to understand for many reasons. He didn't use a mic, very monotone and quiet, and has a heavy accent. I barely made it through the first full week before dropping it. 0/10 do not recommend.
Professor Simchi really cares about his students, it's evident in the way he teaches! The content is difficult but he tries his best to explain it in a way that most students can grasp. The assignments and exams were fair and reflected the content covered in class. I would recommend this prof to anyone who has never taken stats!
great prof, attend lectures and regularly do practice questions and you can get a good grade. his office hours were very helpful. For the labs, prepare to do all the work yourself if you want a high grade. If u watch the videos u can do well in the labs. I honestly only found lab 4 the most helpful for the finals.
He is a little difficult to understand, however, some of his notes are vastly superior to the other stats profs. For instance, his probability ones really make you think about probability and where the formulas on the formula sheet come from. Overall he is a decent prof.
Unaccomodating. If you're looking to excel academically, there are better options.
My main issue with Simchi is that the course is entirely self taught. There are very little materials to access, and the lectures cover the topics as if we knew them already.
Simchi is a great prof if you're willing to pay attention during his lecture. He doesn't talk fast and always emphasize the key points that you will need for the exam. If there is something you don't understand just go his office hours, he's super helpful.
Very clear on expectations for the course, make sure to attend the 1st lecture. His examples can go a little fast, and so you should follow his advice and have the notes ready for annotation as he recommends, it is easy to keep up if you are prepared. Attend all the lectures, he will share a lot of helpful tips to prep for exams!
pls do not teach this course
This is the worst stats course I have done with ridiculous amount of workload... Can't understand how he can expect so much homework and term paper to be done for a single course.
DO NOT take this course with Simchi unless you have NO other options. Please, for your own sake. Assignments and exams were riddled with typos and straight-up errors. "Solutions" for practice exams were incorrect about 20% of the time - which he knew before releasing. I'm honestly just disappointed that our school even tolerates this. :(
Horrible course, so much work, the marking is brutal and the lectures were so dry.
Do not take this course ever. awful handwriting and bad attitude. You wont find him after lecture, he will pick up his daughter every single day and not responding anything. Giving a final practice which only covers half of the lecture and the test is accumulative, tons of errors in the answer. The worst lecture ever.
He does not how to give clear and legible notes, also his material being the worst you wont be able to understand anything if you keep things till the end.
Please DO NOT take his class. I took STAT 368, and this is the worst stat class I've ever had. He didn't give the answer to the practice midterm. The assignment for this class is very heavy, we have four assignment, one group project, and one midterm test as well as one final test. I even don't know how to prepare for the final test. The WORST.
Horrible. Made mistakes on both his final practice and midterm practice in class, never updated it to be correct, this was the only real practice questions for exams. Too much work on assignments, good portion it not even covered in class. Mediocre explanation, extremely boring, terrible writing on notes, and notes in general not that good.
bad prof, cannot teach, way too much work. little practice given and no explanation for steps in solutions
Way too much work. Unclear notes, and difficult to read handwriting. Marks too hard, very low class averages.
Do you wish to learn? Do you want to preserve your sanity? Do you dream of understanding that which is being taught? Save yourself, and do not take this prof.
Good person, just not a great prof. Has an accent and his handwriting isn't clear. There's an assignment due each week and each has like 20 questions, 4 labs(group work which are pretty big as well). He wants to help and is caring but you can't rlly understand his explaining.
I want to go to his class when I want to fall asleep, he is so boring. So many homework, bad writing.
His lectures are very dry, he speaks in a monotone voice, and he can be hard to understand sometimes. You will end up teaching yourself most of what you will learn in this class. I do not recommend this professor for 1st-year classes, especially if you do not have experience with statistics.
Simchi is really easy to reach and is always happy to help students.
He knows his stuff but his accent makes it hard to understand him sometimes. His handwriting is also messy at times, but he posts his notes after lectures. I learned the content better by watching another profs' videos, so take another prof if you can.
Decent prof, but his accent is very hard to understand and notes can be messy at times (although he does post all of them after class). Had to learn the course from Rosana's videos.
Amazing prof. His accent isn't that strong, you get used to it. Very helpful both in class and during office hours. If you ask him a question, he will not stop elaborating until you understand the concept, which is great. He is also extremely kind. I would definitely recommend!
Simchi was my best professor all sem! He is very nice and always answers any questions after class. He replies to emails very quickly and is always happy to help. He talks very fast so I recommend previewing his old lecture notes and writing down his annotations before class so you can just listen. Do the review quizzes bc they help. Highly suggest
He is very nice but he teaching isn't the best. He teaches fast and speeds over things as though we would already know it. If you can go to Rosanna's class! Or watch her videos because she explains them very well.
Funny guy with a passionate teaching style. Emphasizes what is important to know for labs and exams. Think accent, but watching videos on the subject matter will help with any gaps in your knowledge.
You can try if you want
Not great
He's a good person and he cares abt his students, it's just that you can't really understand what he says most of the time, and he goes through things rly fast, I had to teach myself the course and watch videos from other profs. he's always in such a hurry to finish, and his notes are messy(if u don't note what it means you won't understand later)
For stats 266, professor simchi was amazing. Aside from hard to read handwriting at times or occasional computational mistakes, the lecture note examples he provided were really good and he went step by step. To excel in the course, just do his in class examples and re do the hw's as his exams took questions directly from those
Professor Simchi is caring but his teaching style can be hit or miss. The class has a heavy workload, but using resources like unstuckstudy AI can help with study prep.
Dr. Simchi was an amazing professor for STAT 266 this summer. Not only is he highly knowledgeable about statistics and mathematics, he is patient, caring and always makes sure that his students understand his lecture also. Simchi solves problems bottom-up (which I prefer); Kowalski, the other professor for 266, solves problems top-down.
This professor does not care about his students one bit. He doesn't care about your knowledge and clearly doesn't want to be here. Not here to teach, just here for the salary. Very rude and inconsiderate to any unfortunate circumstance. Do not take this class with him, it's not worth it you'll just fail.
Guy absolutely sucks, thick accent, doesn't record lectures, does not use a mic, very hard to comprehend, just reads notes and skims examples and questions too fast. No point going to class you'd do better on the final by guessing, considering dropping out if you have him
I've never encountered a worse lecturer before. The slides are confusing, the explanations are unclear, and the exams bear little to no relation to the course materials. Additionally, every homework assignment for this class spans over 70 pages in a single PDF, making it unnecessarily cumbersome.
This lecturer is a fraud. He claimed the 20% homework and 20% project marks were easy to achieve with effort, but the TA strictly marks anything not matching the answer key as zero. Homework averages are below 60%, with assignments spanning 80 pages. Exams are unrelated to the course, and his teaching is confusing and misleading.
With all due respect Alireza Simchi was a pretty awful Professor. He had a microphone, but refused to buy battery's so I spent the entire semester not hearing a word he said. To make matters worse his printing was completely illegible so you could not fill in the gaps of parts you did not hear by reading his notes.
Worst prof known to man for stats! Never in my life will I ever take another statistics class taught by him. I would recommend you drop the class if you get him as a prof and pick another class instead. In class he doesn't use his mic and he has a thick accent making it hard to understand.
Shit prof...I only did good in this class purely cause it was self taught. I can't understand his thick accent and the fact that he doesn't use a mic in class makes it hard for me to hear his voice clearly. There is no point in going to class purley cause of those reasons.
He is an amazing prof!
Simchi has thick accents and messy handwritings, which makes the lectures pretty hard. BUT his notes were pretty useful with a lot of examples, even if you don't understand the concepts, as you follow his steps on how to solve the example questions, you'll slowly catch up. overall, not bad not good.
All the ppl that say they don't understand him are just dense. His speech is clear. You cannot cram night before exams. That is probably why I failed. Problem with this course is it's graded by very few things. If you don't do well on exams, you're screwed. The labs took up so much time and effort but they were not weighed fairly (4%).
In my opinion, I liked Simichi as a prof but STAT 235 was a living hell. I think everyone struggled in this course. The labs are ok, but the online assignments are hell (especially probability). Also, pay attention in class cuz he always explains stuff that would help in exams. Plus I would say post-midterm is easier than pre-midterm content.
Idk why so many people hate on Simchi lol. Sure, he goes a little fast, but I find he explains things pretty clearly and points out the important things to focus on for exams. Besides, all MATH and STAT courses rely heavily on practice, so don't blame him for your shortcomings and do more studying on your own to do well. I glaze with no shame lol.
He has extremely messy writing and goes through the notes very quickly. He never used his mic and had a thick accent so it was hard to listen to him too. I only pulled my grade up to what it is because I self taught myself the rest of the course.
He is a great prof, he really cares about your learning. Sometimes the flow can be quite fast so pay attention. This course has a lot of group labs and the homework can be quite a lot but it fully prepares you for the exams which were very fair. Overall great prof.
Honestly he was a pretty decent prof. Language barrier was hard at first but eventually was comprehensible. Midterm and Final were VERY similar almost identical to the actual exams. I would however recommend doing Rosanna Foks video lessons and questions to enhance understanding. Other than that the labs just sucked because of other students.
Professor Simchi does have a bit of an accent, but it's easy to get used to. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and offers plenty of office hours, encouraging everyone to attend. Most of his notes are example-based, which is really helpful, and he points out what will be on the midterm and final during his lectures.
He's definitely a nice guy who cares about his students. But for me I couldn't get past the messy writing and accent, I struggle with math on a regular day so this class wasn't easy for me. He does lots of examples which is nice but most of the time they were illegible. If you have to take stats, I wish you luck.
His handwriting is very messy, so try not to rely on the annotated notes if possible. His lecture were alright, but rather boring. I ended up learning most of the material through Professor Loveland's STAT 3000 playlist on youtube, as well as some videos from JB statistics.
His lectures were hard to follow, and his constant “Please pay attention” in a silent room drove me crazy. His handwriting was unreadable so I relied on Rosana Foks videos. He was thrown in last minute after our professor was fired and I felt bad for him—he was always in pain and tried to move the class online. Still, he wasn't a great teacher.
HARD class but Simchi is very helpful.
I had him as a lab coordinator and he messed up on some instructions and then gave like 100 students a 0 and refused to regrade. I was able to get the weight transferred from the lab to my final but still. There was an error in the instructions so many students did the exact same thing when handing in the lab, but we all were given 0. I'm bitter.
Simchi cares about his students. He provides a lot of practice material ( review quizzes / practice exams). Class content is very difficult but do those practice and you will do fine in this class. GO TO LECTURES because Simchi tells you EXACTLY what would be on the exams.
Labs were the worst, A LOT of work and cumulatively worth 10%. Simchi isn't a horrible prof, he was easy to get a hold of and responded quickly to emails. His accent is pretty thick but you'll get used to it. His writing is bad so if you stop paying attention for a couple minutes/miss a class good luck trying to his notes. He's also boring
The accent is not the biggest problem of his, is how he doesnt bother try to make a change. When it comes to the teaching, he skims the lecture content, fills up the solutions to the examples and put in some numbers, the whole lesson was about him talking, rushing to get the task fulfilled *Note that there is difference between talking and teaching
His lectures are impossible to follow as he jumps around and speaks in a hushed thick accent. Best of luck lmao
I honestly don't understand some of the hate for Dr. Simchi. The man genuinely cares for his students and is always willing to help out. He responded to emails very quickly too. Oh and if you attend his lectures, HE LITERALLY TELLS YOU WHAT QUESTIONS WILL BE ON THE EXAMS, so I would highly recommend attending his lectures if you want to succeed.
I only went to Simchi's lecture a handful of times. He's a nice guy, but I don't like his teaching style. I'd recommend watching Dr Fok's videos instead.
Writing is unreadable. Accent is heavy to the point where nothing is understandable. His classes started early sometimes and showing up a minute late would result in missing many notes. Would recommend watching other prof's lectures.
He was right, it's not a course you can learn in just a few days before the final. His lecture was boring. And his handwriting makes the notes real hard to read. Labs were not hard, but they are boring as well, and really depends on how well did the TA explained them in the video. And the final was focused on the stuff he taught after the midterm.
Dr. Simchi was genuine and nice, you could definitely tell he wanted students to succeed. He does post lots of extra practice questions as well which helps a lot for studying. This being said, his writing is very messy and had to follow. I skipped or didn't pay attention in most lectures and caught up my own and did fine.
I went to a few of simchi's classes, because it's hard to understand him and his writing is bad. Watch the lecture videos and show up and listen for important parts of the course. He clearly states what will and what wont be on the final. He's a nice guy and gets too much hate. Simchi truly does what you to succeed, even tho he comes of a bit scary
Very boring prof. I completely stopped going to class and relied on other profs videos.
Honestly just difficult to understand and poor writing
The lectures were incredibly boring and not very helpful. He is not good at explaining what is actually going on and was often rude to students who would ask for clarification. Although the notes are posted, they are very messy and are almost illegible. I was having to break down the entire course and teach it to myself.
His approach to teaching is different, and it unfortunately reflected poorly on his reputation. He's caring, answers questions, and gives feedback. He does, however, use the fact that STAT151 is a huge course, and that there are many students. He gives little exceptions, and moves forward in the lecture without stopping. Otherwise good prof, though
His delivery is like an angry parent helping their kid with 4th grade math homework, but you can tell he cares for the class and wants everyone to do well. He points out questions that will be in exams and goes in depth in his explanations, also really helpful in his office hours. Lectures are a bit boring at times but other than that amazing prof.
His teaching style is just boring and a lot of the times, I was not even sure what was going on especially once the modules started getting harder. I feel like this course would have been easier with another prof since I just eventually gave up going to lectures. He definitely cared about his students though.
Honestly he was a good professor. Was hard to understand him at times due to his accent and poor handwriting, but he repeats himself multiple times so you can hopefully catch it. The class itself is hard and you have to put a lot of work into it. But he will tell you all to expect and that will be on the midterm and final.
doing the notes before lecture really helped me understand lecture material more, even if you don't grasp everything, just going to lecture and listening to him explain things is still helpful
The worst professor for the hardest starting uni class. Can't understand him, grades hard af, and no chance of success because the class is uncurved. Final average this year was a 48 in his class, with more people getting 9/50 than 32/50. Uncurved by the way. Good luck lmao.
Good luck. One of the most evil classes with one of the most careless profs. An uncurved nightmare with lectures you can't understand and concepts that are just wild. Average on the final was a 48, with more people getting 9/50 than 32/50. Uncurved btw. Have fun. This class made me reconsider school. If you think you're ready, you're not.
If you can't understand his writing or accent, you will not succeed, but it wasn't too difficult for me to get used to. Great guy and explains things very deeply. Make sure to write down everything he says will be on the exam. As long as you keep attending you'll be grounded in the course
Simchi doesn't speak English well. He's decent at teaching, just hard to follow due to his accent. Rosana Fok is a better stats teacher.
