Very interesting lectures- she definitely knows how to speak!
A lecture is a lecture, but the class is great. Most of it take place in the discussion portion
Great class!!! The teacher is cute and the discussion classes are so fun! My TA Kristin was really cool, if you get her you'll have a blast!
lecture is lecture, true. DO NOT TAKE 8AM SECTION. making speeches at 8am SUCKS. otherwise fairly easy class. didn't like her over-enunciation tho. kinda grated. she was cool tho.
Overall class was VERY EASY and BORING didn't really care that much and didn't go to class. Final was hard cause it was super tricky also I didn't take any notes so I got a B-.

easy easy easy. she made lecture bearable... always had interesting anecdotes. very clear. most of the action takes place in section though. kate wilson was a great TA
Lectures well, so take good notes on what she says (even if she doesn't write them on the board). most of your grade comes from section with your TA so you shouldn't really be worrying about Shubb. Problem is if you end up with an anal-law-student-TA.
Lectures were interesting. She presented material in a way that kept me awake. She was well orgainzed. Make sure to study hard for the final, 50 MC.
she's a great lecturer. lecture makes up entire final. my TA was megan Kaminski-- she's a hard grader and isn't really nice. Great prof, bad TA.
I like this class a lot. Although the TA was cool, she graded the papers a bit harshly. It was an overall fun class to take. Lectures are interesting.
An easy, fun class.
Alissa Shubb is one of the best professors here. Her lectures are very entertaining: the anecdotes used make the material easy to absorb. Finals are based on lecture. Get a good section time too, Kate Wilson is an awesome TA.
Great class. Every useful for anything you'll do. TA's are great! Very helpful. It's not as easy as you may think (like an automatic A), but it is interesting, fun, and you learn a lot!
extremely fun class to be in; i can honestly say i like the lectures better than the sections...the class is not difficult, but it's not easy either. the TAs are awesome!!!! Alison Young and Philip Choi are awesome TAs!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good teacher. All a matter of getting a good TA. Makes you memorize a lot for final.
Hope that you do not get Sheryl Hurner as your TA, her grading is very, very questionable. I don't think anybody in my section liked her very much, and rightfully so. That said, Shubb is a good professor, it's just unfortunate I had to get such a lousy TA.
She is a good lecturer but the class relies completely upon the TA and Sheryl Hurner was aweful. It seemed if you got on her bad side, then there was no way to get a good grade. I agree with the last commenter. I liked the lectures and did well on the exam but Sheryl marked me down so much for the speeches and papers, I couldn't recover.
Very good teacher, funny too.
She knows where to get her ethos, logos, and pathos. Lectures are very clear, interesting, and funny Unfortunately, grading IS dependent on the discussion. So you better hope that you get a TA that grades nice.
lectures funny. test really easy. discussion section mandatory but sheryl really helpful and nice
Her lectures are totally interesting. Take good notes because the exam is all out of lecture.
First off, she is HOT!!! i sat in the front row every lecture. It's a very fun class to take, and she keeps her lectures entertaining. take notes on that since that's what the final's based on. My TA Illana was also a gorgeous woman who made Discussion fun and short.
Most of the grade depends on discussion which is highly questionable. class dependent on TA (who oversees discussion). Lectures were entertaining and she does a good job of presenting the material.
TA: Illana Kitover is the best! I love her!
Entertaining lectures! I had to come early to get a good seat in the front: I wanted the best view of her amazing shoes and eye-poppingly bright outfits. Funny, personable, lecturer who makes material memorable and simple (not that it's complex stuff to begin with!). Grade depends on TA, unfortunately.
Discussion is mandatory. Follow rubric EXACTLY for speeches and you will get an A. Ppl try to be creative and make up own techniques and wonder why they get C's. Final is a breeze if you have gone to lecture. Should be an easy A if you follow directions and put some thought into your work. It's actually pretty fun to listen to everyone's speeches
Personally I found her jokes pretty lame but it at least keeps things interesting. Sometimes she will go off on a tangent for a while that has nothing to do with the lecture. Overall, can be an easy class depending on your TA. Four speeches, first and last ones are easy; pass or no pass. Second and third require in depth research and citations.
she is a wonderful teacher. she teaches you how to speach in a public places like graduation ceremony. She wants you to do what she guides you. she is wonderful. If I need to take another speech class, it would be her.
T.A. teaches the class and grades your speeches & papers. Class is quite a bit of work. Learned a decent amount but it all depends on your T.A. Mine sucked, could have been much better. And Shubb's smoking hot goddess of communication.
Terribly uninteresting class. The material could be condensed into a single lecture but everything is padded with stupid examples, usually about dating or sex as a cheap ploy to keep the audience interest. I was not amused. She is also very ignorant on many subjects she speaks on that aren't communication, misleading students on her random tangents.
Lectures were pretty pointless, and most of the learning is done with the TA or in the book, but you have to go to lecture because questions on the final will be based off of it. You can get a good grade if you get the right TA and/or enjoy giving speeches, but it definitely wasn't an "easy" class. Final is all memorization.
Alisa Shubb is amazing and has lots of compassion.
2nd and 3rd speeches basically determine if you can get an A or not. I did very good on the speech. But got an A- due to the tedious final exam. Final is 100 multiple choice questions. Some questions were not well written that there could be more than one answer. But you cannot complain because it is a final.
TAs run the show. If you get a good TA, you get an easy A. Make sure to go to class orand read a chapter of the book each week. If it piles up, you would get into trouble for the final. Final is worth 20% of the grade and the rest are speeches.
She is a great professor and the concept isn't too hard to understand. There is no midterm so the final is long since it covers the entire quarter, but with the study guide you should be good.
Her lectures were really clear and to the point. Always related real life, funny examples to get her point across. Only two big speeches and two easier ones. Gives you some test questions during lecture so it is helpful to go, although it does seem like a waste of time sometimes since its a GE.
Most of your grade depends on your TA. My TA was a difficult grader so I had to work hard for an A. Prof. Shubb is a very animated and entertaining professor although the material can get boring. Most of the material is in her textbook that she forces you to buy. The final was unnecessarily long but if you study the study guide, you'll be fine.
The workload is fairly moderate. Two big speeches, two smaller speeches, two papers, and the final. The final is big; if you thoroughly study the study guide she provides, you should be fine. Your TA grades your speeches and papers, so your grade depends on them. You're Supposed to read every week, but I didn't and did fine (but I went to lecture).
T.A.'s are responsible for grading and mine graded TOUGH for the speeches. Papers get graded very reasonably but the speeches are highly scrutinized. You must follow the speech grading rubric/ tips from Shubb's lectures in order to get A's on your speeches. Also if you attend EVERY lecture, you should be able to get an A on the final. DONT SKIP!
She makes you buy the newest version of her textbook, which is horribly written and quite expensive. The written final is worth the same amount as the two big speeches, which is ridiculous for a speech class. There are already made study guides out there that outline what you need to know on the final, study those and you'll be fine.
Hardest class I've taken as an undergrad and it is a lower division!! Do not recommend taking it with this professor.
Way harder than any introductory class should ever be. If you come into the class without significant prior public speaking experience, or English is your second language, you won't be able to get an A. Textbook is rife with errors and made up words, lecture is a regurgitation of the book with a lot of self aggrandizement on the lecturer's part.
Final is worth a third of the course, so even if you've proved your speaking ability your grade can be tanked by not memorizing her textbook. Plenty of study guides and quizlets available, but her lectures are a waste of time and your grade will mostly depend on your TA. WAY harder than an intro course should be.
You don't really need to go to class if you do the reading. The final sucks.
I dropped her class and decided to take it at my local community college over the summer. Absurd grading standards for a lower division communication class!
Four speeches, 2 papers, one final with 100 questions. A lot of work for a lower div class. Do not go over the time limit for the speeches! papers are really easy to write in my opinion. But do take it seriously. Go over the entire book and do the study guide for the final. Listen to her examples in lectures cuz they will probably be on the final.
Like everyone has said, it is a ridiculous amount of work for a lower-division COMMUNICATIONS class. Grading depends on TA and Shubb is the most arrogant and self-righteous professor Ive every had the pleasure of meeting. Her final is 100 question, and worth 1/3rd of your grade (she even quotes herself in her final) Lecutres are useless.
Read your textbook in and out - details matter. You're graded by only a few things, so your final counts for a serious portion and trust me, it'll trip you up. I personally didn't go to lecture because she taught exactly from the book. There were quiz questions (she gave the answer in lecture) and my friend group set up a group chat for them.
Lectures are rather dry regurgitations of the text. The material could have been condensed down to at most 50mins. Lecture doesn't prepare you for the final, which is a third of the final grade. The final itself is really specific. Skip the class and use the time to closely read the textbook. Low education value. Takes itself too seriously.
The lectures repeat exactly what's in the book (which you have to buy) so they tend to be pretty boring. It's just one of those classes you have to take. If you're already fairly comfortable with public speaking then you'll do fine.
I do not agree that being a good speaker entails you doing well. I am a confident speaker with (before this class) straight As. The professor does not work primarily at Davis and it shows by her lack email responses.. If you can afford it, do not take Subuhi Khan (TA). She was very nice until after evals THEN grades harshly without warning.
Lectures are boring! She just repeat what is in the textbook. Lecture quiz every week. The important thing is, I am a confident public speaker and I did every assignment carefully. But the final will kill you! Avoid her!
Prof. Shubb talks about her family and Argentine tango in her lecture. There are two papers required for this class - each should be five-page long- and nobody understands the vague rubric of the paper. She forwards your emails to everyone in the class, which does not align with my conception of personal email correspondence.
Had to write 2 papers and give 3 class oral presentations. Also had some book work that was easy. But the lectures are absolutely the most boring of any professor. Final is exclusively based on class and book readings so always be on your work. Don't take this class take CMN 3 instead. Prof Shubb class not worth.
Aight so here's the thing about lil miss Alisa's class. I wrote it as 4 for difficulty, not because the material was hard, but because her GRADING is the hardest thing ever. She told our TA he was being too easy despite all of us Rocking B's. She regraded our essays bc our sections average was a 42/50, which was 'too high' according to her. Wack.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. Waaayyy too many requirements for a lower div intro class. Prof. Shubb is extremely punitive and goes out of her way to make the class excessively difficult. This was the first time in 3+ yrs. of college that I felt as though my prof. actually couldn't care less about her students. God, it was so bad...
Worse class ever. Honestly, Im not sure why this class is a requirement for so many majors. The lectures are a waste of time, and the only reason one would attend is for quiz points. You have to write two five page papers for a COMMUNICATIONS class and have a written final worth 1/3rd of your grade which I find really absurd.
The final covers endless pointless classifications rather than things that will make you a good public speaker. My speeches were worse in this class than elsewhere because you have to submit a full sentence outline which gets stuck in your head, making it hard to speak naturally. If your department offers a class you can take instead take that.
I was doing fine with all my work through the quarter until the final exam. We only delivered speeches in class and no mid terms and hence the final exam was the first time we had to take a theory based test. I did not know what to expect on the test and I feel I could have done way better if I had more practice. Would not take this class again.
This class has too many requirements. What made me upset is that Shubb forced her TAs to make the class have a B- average, which seemed unfair because everyone did a fantastic job on their speeches and tried very hard. She also forced you to buy her useless textbook because there are tear outs. She is also very rude to her TAs and students in OH.
I did Speech and Debate for six years. I love public speaking. However, I strongly disliked this class. The information is not good for someone learning how to be a good speaker. It is heavy on theory (like "5 parts of listening") and has little practical takeaway. Lectures and book are unnecessarily dense, and the final is 100q MC on both. Avoid.
Course structure is poor. Forces you to buy her textbook, that has about 10 pages total that you need to do, rip out, turn in. Other than that, it's useless. Lectures were very dull and did not need to be 2 hours a week. Speeches and essays were graded by the TA, so that's hit or miss. Final is 100 MC based on her textbook, to justify buying it.
For a UCD Alumni, she really doesn't seem to understand that most students have to take this class as a requirement. She asks and mentions it all the time, so she's noticed, but she doesn't adjust his course. I found the papers, as an assignment alone, was fair because we had to analyze speeches. Both ended up being graded way too harshly. AVOID.
I am sorry that the lowest quality is 1, not 0. I would more likely to say 0 for her class if I could. If you want to spend money on buying textbooks and writing 5 pages of paper for a averageB- grade, this is the best choice in UC Davis as far as I can think !
This class is among the worst I have ever taken. It treats public speaking as a rigid science, comprised of information that gets thrown at you in the form of bullet points and sub bullet points and sub sub bullet points. The lectures are painfully dull. The speeches are graded poorly, on arbitrary criteria. The textbook is terrible and often wrong
Prof Shubb moves at a very slow pace and doesn't need 2 hours to lecture. Her required textbook, which is identical to the lectures, is very wordy and lengthy, however it is really helpful for crafting speeches. Final is difficult but as long as u put effort in speeches you'll be fine. Not the best prof but a great class that I would recommend!
No curve or extra credit. The lecture is kind of boring. Force you to buy her textbook, about 50 dollars. Use quizs to check lecture attendance. Your grade depends more on your TA
The textbook is expensive and required but useless. Easy B but hard A
One of the worst at Davis, forces you to buy her book so that she can turn a profit off of already financially burdened students. An ironically bad lecturer for someone who teaches public speaking. Take the composition exam to try to get out of your public speaking requirement.
A professor who teaches a public speaking class but makes the worst lectures.
Tedious lecture and useless textbook. Her public speaking skill is not qualified to teach a public speaking class.
Very strict participation grading policy for discussion. Her lecture does not worth 2 hours.
I want to give Professor Shubb credit for being super knowledgable in her field. Something that I really hope she changes for future students is her grading. The downfall of the class was the harsh grading for students who worked hard to obtain an A grade. I hope she can inspire students in public speaking after they enjoy taking CMN 1.
Lecture heavy and you have to buy her textbook. Not to bad the speeches are done in the discussion so only in front of a small group of people. It's not to bad.
Worst class I have ever taken. She wants the class average to be B- and its extremely difficult to get an A. You don't learn anything in the class and the grading is extremely harsh. I took the class as GE and this was the worst decision. Extremely unfair grading. No Curve, No Extra Credit. AVOID HER CLASS!!!!
Take this class in the summer if you can. Shubb is very narcissistic and requires 2 papers and a 100 question final that the TA's teaching during the summer usually do not give (My TA told us this and agreed that public speaking isn't about textbooks and essays) As long as you follow the instructions exactly for the speeches you will do fine.
Worst Professor ever! you don't lear anything in class and the class is extremely tough.
This class is very difficult and you do not learn anything despite all your efforts and also end up getting a low grade. She makes you buy her textbook which is not worth it and also cost a lot!!! Please Avoid her class!
Avoid her class if you are taking the class to learn or to boost your gpa. Worst class in UC Davis. Never taking her class again
AVOID HER CLASS!! Despite of all the efforts you end up getting a low grade. Also you need to buy her textbook which is of literally no use
Discussion is mandatory. The final exam is pretty hard! you have to memory lots of small details from the textbook and lecture! DON'T take it !
Holy crap. NEVER ever voluntarily take this class thinking its gonna be a good GE. The reason is there is so much damn work for just an introductory public speaking class. You have write rhetorical analysis papers ,read a lot from her useless expensive textbook, and speeches of course which the TAs grade harshly and arbitrarily. AVOID if possible
Your grade mainly depends on your TA, as they grade the majority of your work. Her final exam is pretty difficult though, with a lot of the questions coming from lecture. She's pretty funny though and has an interesting wardrobe.
Honestly, I found this class interesting. She didn't teach this quarter at all (during the COVID pandemic), we had to watch the lectures from the previous quarter. The only thing that was difficult was the grading from the TA. What you think is a "dramatic conclusion" may not be so dramatic for them, but they are willing to help you out.
The lectures are dry and mostly useless. She makes you buy a textbook that she has personally wrote that is beyond boring and contains little useful information for the topic of public speaking. The main bulk of the work is done by the TA's. If you have a good TA, you'll have a decent class. Take a different class
I honestly dont know why people hate this class so much? The professor is a good lecturer, the content is pretty easy to grasp, and the essays arent that difficult. The hardest part is probably the speeches you have to give but as long as you prepare ahead of time you should be fine. It is pretty TA-based though so it would suck to have a bad one
This class isnt too difficult but writing an essay for a public speaking class is a little...? Also, Professor wrote her own textbook and makes it mandatory to buy it for the class... I just dont agree with professors that think they are justified in making us spend more money than we already have to :(
CMN 001 was a challenging class but overall, it helped improve my skills as a whole. The class meets for mandatory discussion twice a week and discussions are led by TAS. Never did I communicate with Professor Shubb throughout the quarter but she did provide helpful videos that correlated with each subject we were talking about.
wThe class itself was okay. I never saw her, since the class was online. The one thing I did not like was that we had to buy her textbook. It was an okay textbook that cost $40 to use for 9 weeks. Could've been worse, but still a little irritating.
this class made me feel so much worse about public speaking- and i publicly spoke all throughout highschool! im in my third year and have maintained a 4.0- and THIS was the class i had to take P/NP. prof never responded to emails, unfair TA grading, TA always tardy, barely anyone knew what was going on in my discussion! don't take this class!
The class is not hard but the professor wrote her own textbook and made it mandatory to buy which is very unnecessary especially because we are already paying thousands for dollars to attend classes. Lastly it felt very impossible to get a high grade because as someone who has anxiety my voice trembles when presenting which docked my grade
The professor really didn't matter in this class, as we were mostly graded off of things in our discussion. I think they make our TAs grade us unnecessarily hard, especially for an intro course. Her lectures are very organized and informative, though.
Prof. is okay but you are required to buy her textbook and she doesn't actually teach at all. Your grade fully depends on your TA. The grade is comprised of 1 paper, 2 midterms, and 4 speeches. The class is fine but you have to put actual, consistent effort in to get an A.
This class was a mess. She wasnt involved at ALL and gave us lectures she recorded from other quarters, which were just her basically going over the book. Didnt get a single email from her that wasnt automated about the exam being released, and TAs ran the class/did the grading so she was completely absent.
I don't like public speaking but overall I didn't think this class was that bad. The professor really isn't involved that much; all the content comes from the textbook and all grading is done by the TAs. As long as you follow the rubric on the assignments you should be fine in this class.
I hate how disorganized this class was. I had to take time sometimes just to find certain information because she did not have it all in one place. She does not care what is going on in your life. If you miss something, that is it. She will tell you to drop the class.
Shubb is absent throughout the entire class, forcing you to read from her interactive textbook. Most work is done in discussion when you interact with TAs. There is no clear interaction with her, so class expectations are simply unclear. Do not procrastinate.
AVOID HER! It is just an introductory public speaking course, but she gives you exams, weekly quizzes, and one long essay except for speeches. Unreasonable workload! She also forces you to buy and read the book that she wrote. For speeches, you can't read PPT or use any notes. Otherwise, you will be docked points or get a 0. TOO STRICT!
Run if have chance Stay if you think life is too good I just can't believe this is an introduction to the public speaking class. Honestly, this quarter I also took MAT and programming classes and I feel like this class is even more difficult than the other two. If you decide to take this class then be ready to read a lot of useless stuff
In this 10 week class, we maybe saw her 3 times total. Absurdly hands off. Her presence changed nothing abt class. Those 3 lectures were not helpful; most of the information is in the textbook anyway. But the lack of clarity and responses to questions and accommodation requests are the worst part by far. It was seriously just an awful, awful time.
Personally thought the class was great and very rewarding once all the work was done. There are two big speeches with outlines for each, a paper, and two midterms with the 2nd acting as the "final". Her tests were very straightforward and were open-note/open-book. My TA helped make the class a great experience and was caring to students' needs.
If you take this class, be aware of the TA that you have because the professor does not matter. The whole evaluation of your assignments is left to your TAs. Thus, it depends on how generous and caring the TA is, if they like you or hate you. Shubb’s lectures, useless. She is an unaccommodating prof. who will not take matters into her own hands.
Lectures are kind of useless. TA and discussion section was the most important as that was where I gave my speeches. If you practice your speeches and don't BS stuff the night before, you'll do fine.
Honestly this class could function without her, I never saw her once this whole quarter, the whole class is graded by the TA, so hopefully you get a good one. In person lectures with her are not mandatory, but discussion are, and 2 exams are just based directly off the book, so it's pretty easy, assuming you get a good TA.
There is very limited contact between Dr. Shubb and the student. Her lectures are very clear, but she isn't really involved. Aside from once-per-week lectures, most of the course is taught and graded by your TA (2 weekly discussions). All speeches given in discussion section. You also read the entire textbook in 10 weeks (it's a lot). Easy class.
I liked discussion, and the class overall was fine to get through. The speech outlines and extemporaneous speaking were kind of annoying to do. The lectures were unnecessarily long and, despite the time, I still had to learn everything through the textbook. The professor could have taught more than she did in her 2 hours, she is very nice though!
The class was a two-hour lecture x 1 a week and an hour disc section x 2 a week (led by the TA). The info on the reading only pops up on the exam and almost nowhere else. The lectures clarify the reading but do not bring up new material. I was lucky I had a great TA. Make sure you participate and do the extra credit - which there is a lot of.
Professor Shubb was really nice and dynamic during lectures, but those were pretty long and all the material you really need to know is in the textbook. She's very accessible and nice during office hours too. Speeches for this class were really annoying, you had to prepare a lot to get a decent grade, same with tests. But they were overall doable.
This class was overall okay. The assignments and lectures weren't all that interesting, but all the work was manageable. Professor Shubb is very passionate about her lectures, which definitely brings up the energy. Though, your TA is basically your only point of contact. I think this is an easy GE and would recommend taking it.
This is a required class for a lot of students but if you can avoid it please do, Shubb is a terrible professor do anything you can to avoid her class. She is very stuck up and unhelpful.
doesnt support tas. didnt care student was harmed during strike. easy class. i never read the "required" book for the midterms and still got an A. speeches are graded weirdly and harshly. expects you to be perfect in this beginner class. don't need to go to lecture since it is a recap of the book.
Professor has no influence, if your TA is terrible good luck getting an A, 90% of assignments are graded by them. Very harsh grading drop the class as soon as you know a bit about how your TA will grade.
If not required, DO NOT TAKE CMN 001. Everything is graded by your TA. If you get a bad TA then have fun /s. Grading inconsistent with rubrics. For a communications class, TA is horrible at communicating with students. Lectures aren't required but discussions are. Any other speaking situation has taught me more than this class.
hilarious as in hilarious this class still exists. what a garbage class. id rather take ochem 50 times over than deal with this awful course. stay away and run far far away
Extra credits are easy to earn (20 out of 500). Lectures are just vivid textbooks so doesn't matter that much. Discussions are more important. Practice your speeches ahead of time and it will be easy to earn an A.
I thought this class was incredibly easy. I loved my TA ( who does all the grading for this class ), and I never attended a lecture and still got an A. As a professor, she's super absent, but as a class, it's super simple. Just practice your speeches, turn your outlines in, and the midterms are open note. Extra credit helped a ton.
I rly loved this class, don't be put off by bad reviews! Discussions were so fun, and we were given a lot of freedom for topics. My section bonded a lot over the quarter :) P. Shubb is a good lecturer, but you don't rly have to go bc they are long and textbook-based. Hated exams, but they're open note so I used ctrl-f on the book the whole time.
CMN 001 was fine. Just fine. Shubb does not grade anything with the majority of work being graded by the TA. There are two major speeches, a midterm, and final. The class itself is not extremely difficult but definitely more work than most people anticipate. Make sure to practice speeches and do the extra credit assignment.
The lecture was very boring and slow. Most of the grades and assignments are done with discussion, multiple speeches, and 2 test that felt super long and textbook based. Everything except for the test is graded by TA, so hopefully you get a good one who is not too harsh.
I could not sit through Shubb's lectures and honestly for a public speaking professor that is really disappointing. I felt like I learned a million times better by the TA. Shubb did fine outside of just having slow and really basic lecture, if you have to take this class your TA will make or break it for you so good luck :)
The lectures are optional but also very fun. They're recorded as well. The bulk of the work (by which I mean everything relating to your grade) is done in discussion. Don't be intimated by the public speaking aspect!! It's not in front of a whole lecture, just in the small discussion groups with super low stakes. Just make sure to practice.
tbh she's okay. You won't enjoy her class unless you have a really good TA. She tells you that the textbook is optional but literally all of her tests were ONLY based on the book which was stupid. In other words, her lectures won't help you unless you genuinely want to become a better speaker. All speeches are done in discussions, not lectures.
Didn't go to a single lecture and ended with a 96. As long as you can speak well and you get a good TA it's pretty light. Tests are easy and speeches you just need to prepare adequately for. Just an annoying class sometimes because there is always a speech lingering in the future that you might have to worry about.
Don't bother going to lectures, they're boring an a waste of time. Basically all your work is graded by your TA in discussion, which is where you do all your speeches. Pretty easy 4 unit course if you have to take it or you strangely like extra credit.
She was pretty funny but i wish her lectures related more to the textbook to help us with the exams. If you get a bad T.A ur kinda screwed but make sure to read all the guidelines on the speeches
The class is based mainly around your T.A, which is very true. Over 70% of your grade will come from speeches and discussion activities. The online exam was the most difficult, even with an online textbook. Do the extra credit, as it can make or break the difference between a B+ and an A-.
Interesting prof to listen to, plus the midterm/final is online+open note. The class itself is designed poorly with extremely boring and mainly useless 2 hour lectures, content doesn't need 2 hours. Class depends a lot on TA. Ultimately easy, light work and open topics for speeches which gives opportunity to be interesting to research.
The lectures are very boring and around 2hrs (also recorded). You don't really need to go to them and attendance is not mandatory. Her midterm/final were both textbook heavy but were open note+online. The dicussions were super fun and the presentations weren't bad. My TA was pretty lenient with grading even if you aren't great at public speaking.
Didn't attend a single lecture and barely watched the recordings, but I ended with an A in the class. Discussion attendance is definitely mandatory, and having a good TA is very important. The midterm and final were kind of hard, but they were online and open note. Would only recommend taking if mandatory.
Lectures are entirely useless, did not attend a single full lecture and still ended with an A+ (extra credit). She is entirely inaccessible outside of class, the actual TEACHING falls onto the TAs. Get ready to research for all speech outlines. Midterm & final are based on course book but 20% of the questions are either ambiguous or not mentioned.
Mostly uninvolved and not very interesting. TA is the x-factor as they do everything and discussion is mandatory. Lectures are boring and not worth the time, just use the textbook. Exams are online open book, speeches are fairly easy, and there's extra credit. Workload can get pretty high midway as a bunch of things are due including an essay.
Lecture isn't worth going at all and doesn't take attendance. Gives you writing assignments and online exams even though it's a public speaking class. Exams are open book and very straightforward. Please pray to have a good TA since most of your grades are going to be graded by your TA.
As you might expect from what she's teaching, she's certainly a good public speaker. I enjoyed her lectures but ultimately did not go to many of them and did fine in the class. The class itself was pretty easy, though having a good TA makes or breaks the experience.
Professor Shubb is an enthusiastic and engaged lecturer, but the lectures are long and she draws them out to be longer than they need to be and they can be boring. She wrote the textbook, and the lectures and textbook cover exactly the same material. The assignments are pretty doable and grading is generous.
Lectures are completely useless, midterms are pulled from online textbook, and they're all open note. Grade heavily depends on your TA, who will be grading your speeches in your discussion, for which attendance is mandatory. Lots of extra credit opportunities too. Put effort in on your speeches, they matter a lot for your grade.
you have to buy the book she writes which will become completely useless for the rest of your life after ur done w her. BORING lectures, the way she speaks just turned that 2 hr into a forever long 20 hrs. dk why she even qualifies for teaching this class. exams based on the book. mandatory discussion. Say less, avoid her at all cost PLEASE!!!!!!!!
you have to buy the book she writes which is a waste of money. but if u dont, u cant do the exam D: BORING lectures, the way she speaks just turned that 2 hr into a forever long 20 hrs. dk why she even qualifies for teaching this class. exams based on the book. mandatory discussion. Say less, avoid her at all cost PLEASE I would rate 0 if I could:)
Her lectures were so boring. Its two hours and most of the time she recites personal anecdotes. Its not really useful to go to lectures since her exams are open book and most of the questions are not directly discussed in lecture. Make sure you have a good relationship with the TA since they determine your grade
Never watched any of the lectures and exams were take home. The actual course is in the discussions and those are made by the TA's. I had a blast with my TA as she encouraged creativity and riskiness. TA was super considerate and made the class manageable for everybody. Basically your experience with vary between TA's but if you got good TA, easy A
I attended almost none of her lectures; all work was done during discussion- my TA was nice and lenient. There is a lot more work than one might anticipate for such a course. The exams were 2 open books, so very easy. Overall, pretty easy course with a good lecturer- just need to work and not slack off thinking there would not be much work.
the 2hr lectures are useless since a lot of stuff on the tests weren't covered in lecture but were in the textbook, so just follow along with the textbook. I skipped all but two of the lectures and did just fine. TA makes or breaks your score tho, since they grade everything, and shubb tells TAs to not give many A's on speeches which sucks.
I attended all the lectures (Prof Shubb is nice/chill, goes into textbook more in depth) but you definitely don't have to in order to get a good grade, 2 exams both open note/textbook, speeches in discussion sections are significantly more important for your grade and there's 2 major ones (review rubric to get good grade), good class for a GE
I never went to lecture and only went to my discussions. Just depends on who you have as a TA for your grade. The class was super easy and a good GE if you need an A.
I got an A+ and did not go to a single lecture. I was SUPER lucky to have a kind, lenient TA despite my nerves from public speaking and I do feel like I benefited. However, my entire grade was from discussion. Midterm/final online and I just used the textbook on the bullsh** problems. Professor is stuck up, lecture is pointless so pray for good TA.
Shubbs while although knows her stuff makes something which could be explained in 45 minutes into a 2 hour lecture. Overall grade is heavily depends on TA and discussion is mandatory. Also this class is about the theories in public speaking than public speaking itself just and FYI.
Her midterms are ridiculous. Have to read her book which is on top hat. And 60 questions, one point each????!!! At least give us more points and less questions. Repetative and confusing. As if the outlines for the speeches and the rhetorical essay weren't enough. Like what is the point of the midterms like whattt.
Her lectures are useless; I went to the first one and never went again. She doesn't actually grade anything for this class, your grade is based on discussion and your TA. Luckily I had a good one who was really chill. Overall an easy class, exams are online, multiple choice on Canvas. We also had to write a rhetorical paper that was unnecessary.
Do not attend lecture, it's useless. Discussion is the only part that matters and your grade essentially depend on your TA leading discussion. Shubb would belittle people in front of the entire lecture hall for leaving early and she made a 10 minutes worth of content into a two hour lecture. Make sure your speeches are within time limit and ur good
This course is an easy A if you just complete the assignments and go to the discussions, BUT the professor herself made the class agonizing. The whole course is based on her OWN textbook and her exams are unreasonably long. There is no other professor for this class so good luck if this is a major requirement which in most cases, it is.
Relatively easy class, but tests were really annoying. 60 questions, some of them repeated, a lot of them really subjective, however, they were take-home and open for 24 hours. Required by a lot of majors, so take it with friends!
complete waste of time
Easy A, not much homework, lecture isn't mandatory, discussion is important - ta grades you, 2 exams - textbook required. Overall, if you do the reading and attend discussion, you'll do fine (you can prob get a good grade without reading). Lectures - Shubb explains concepts fairly well and answers questions during lectures if any.
She does not grade anything all of her assignments are graded by TAs or are auto graded. She also will not round your grade up no matter what despite the low effort she gives her students
This professor makes a quick, 10 minute lecture into a painful 2 hour one. I have sat through many painful lectures that could have been BRIEF and easily covered. She also makes all of her own textbooks, which leads to confusion. Her test questions are often "pick one/multiple/all of the above" which makes grades a pain in the butt. Don't take.
An easy class overall, but the midterms are a pain. The lectures are skippable, but discussion sections are crucial. Use Unstuck ai and the textbook to prep for exams.
Didn't attend lecture after week 1. Class difficulty determined purely by your TA. I loved my class and we had plenty of inside jokes by the end of the quarter. Essays are short and speeches are super low-stress. Midterms are take home and easy since everything can be found in the textbook. Extra credit is easy.
I skipped every lecture. Discussion classes taught by TA's and are required to give speeches. Exams are pretty hard but are online. Textbook found on her TopHat so no need to buy anything. She reminds me of Karen from Liv & Maddie. Speeches are relatively easy. You get one actual paper assignment that is graded tough but can be redone after graded.
People are soo overdramatic. Professor Shubb was fine, and I didn't attend a single lecture after the first. It makes sense that this is a TA and discussion heavy class because IDK how Professor Shubb is expected to teach a public speaking class to 300+ kids. Was an easy A. Even if you are a bad public speaker, if you turn in the HW you're good.
The professor is nice but not useful at all. Midterms are extremely hard for some reason most of the questions are not even in textbook. And she except us to answer them from our own knowledge. Just pray for a good TA otherwise if it is requirement, I am so sorry.
Professor is okay but her workload was disgusting. Speech, speech outline, essay, and exam all due the same week (during midterm season). Exams are ridiculously long. Honestly it's not a hard course, but prepare for a lot of work.
She was a terrible teacher and was very unhelpful
Need to have a good TA. Her exams are hard for no reason, make sure you study in the text book
The professor was pretty useless, I didn't go to a single lecture. Make sure to read the textbook and take notes on it, the midterm and final were open note and completely dependent on textbook. Speeches are graded very hard but it really depends on your TA. Not an awful class just tedious and a lot of work, and tough grading.
Professor Shubb is a good public speaker. Lectures are not mandatory but I went to almost all of them. Lectures are very interesting to attend; however, textbook will help you more for the exams. If you try to balance your time out, just read the textbook. Speeches are chill. They take place in discussion and it really depends on your TA.
Lectures weren't very useful. Though I attended most of them and found them entertaining, they just weren't very Worth It. Midterm and final were open textbook, so just read that and you'll be fine. The speeches were graded heavily, but the rubric is given and most of the grading depends on what TA you get. Would take again though, simple class.
Lecture was useless, you don't need to go at all for class. The only thing that mattered was discussion where you'd give roughly 3 planned speeches and 2 impromptu. You are purely graded by your TA so pray that you have a good one. The midterm was online multiple choice open book. There's multiple opportunities for extra credit which is good.
lecture is optional, but go to discussion section, speeches were very manageable and the tophat online text was interesting. overall good easy class as long as u follow guidelines. by the end u def get comfortable with ur section.
lectures are basically useless since she stretches out the textbook to nearly 2 hours. And you can literally just watch the online lectures that are generally under 30 minutes. Discussion however is mandatory and you really only get graded on 2 speeches along with the midterms. Surprisingly more challenging than it seems
Professor is overhated. Lectures are optional, but useful. Tests are easy and take-home. Most of your grade depends on your TA but as long as you follow the specific rubrics they give out you will be fine. Learned a lot and enjoyed the class.
She has genuienly the worst tests I have ever taken yet at Davis and that includes Physics and Computer Sciences classes as well. The speeches themselves aren't too bad however those tests, jesus christ ridiculous But still possible to get good grade just look at rubric.
Very slow lecturer, okay speaker otherwise. I would not consider myself a great speaker, but it's not a particularly difficult class, even then.
People hate too much. Exams were annoying but open note and easily guessable, they also don't take up too much of grade. I hate public speaking but I had a nice TA who did not grade harshly. Don't show up to lectures (not useful). I stopped going after week 2 (didn't watch at home either) and still did great. Experience prob depends on your TA.
It is a public speaking course, but she grades harshly on outlines and some essays, just overall annoying. But the discussions are very fun if you get a TA. Overall alright.
Grade is heavily determined by your performance in your speeches which is nice. Weight of midterm scores was ridiculous though, considering they're haphazard overcomplicated online questions that are ALWAYS HIDDEN after you complete the test so you can never see what you missed. Should have been an easier GE. Your grade 100% depends on your TA.
Grade is mostly determined by your performance on speeches, so hope you get a good TA. Shubb is a nice enough lady, very passionate about public speaking. People probably hate on her cause they couldn't get an A in this really easy class. If you do good on the speeches, your grade is an A. Midterms are weird but easy because they're online.
All depends on your discussion TA. Only went to the first lecture because it's a waste of 2 hours, otherwise she is not a bad lecturer. Not too much busy work besides making your speeches and putting effort on them. Exams are not difficult as you can just look at the textbook and do the test. Easy class with a goated TA. Otherwise, it can be hard.
One of the most frustrating professors I've ever had. Never left a review for a professor before, but here I am writing this very subjective one because the experience was that disappointing. There was very little room for genuine self-expression. We were forced to giver speech in her style, which made everything feel fake and disconnected.
she seems to be insecure about her classes and ability as professor...? Would not recommend reaching out to her with personal problems because she will NOT accommodate and will actually fight you on it LOL.
Amazing professor. All the classes were asynchronous. She provides plenty of material to make the speech.
I would not recommend Shubb's in person lectures, since they are 2 hours long and mostly function for the audience to discuss with the Professor. She has separate pre-recorded lectures that explain the content much better than in person lecture, and make it so that you don't have to read the textbook. Speech grading is very subjective and variable.
The hardest intro class I have ever taken. TA expect us to be the perfect speakers and grade harshly. You need to treat it as a capstone class to get an A on speech if you are not good at public speaking.
It wasn't a difficult class but the midterm and final were way too hard and nit picky. There are no other tests; speeches are where you'll really earn your points. As long as you abide by the rubric and speak decently loudly and clearly you'll be fine (also depends on your TA). The videos are complete busy work though. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
