Definitely enjoyed this class! Alison is really nice and wants everyone to succeed. Tests are easy if you study what she tells you to. For such a boring gened, she made it fun.
Alison is awesome! She's a little scatter brained but always makes sure everyone understands. She's extremely understanding about missing classes and doesn't mind if you're late unless its on speech days. She has a tendency to change things last minute but if you ask for more time or give suggestions she truly takes them into consideration.
I Love Alison! :) She is super nice and helpful, plus she plays awesome music to start off an early morning. She can relate to us easily just as we can relate to her. I really enjoyed this class and I would highly suggest Alison. She's great!
Alison is the kind of professor that wants you to do well and makes sure you are doing well in her class. She keeps track of everybody and knows who is struggling. Attendance is mandatory, and it being at 8am is not fun either, but she plays music to try to wake us up. She can be really random/sporadic, but she makes the class fun.
Alison is a great teacher. She doesn't make you take too much notes and she always posts her notes on blackboard. She likes to bake and sometimes brings things for us to eat on fridays. We do 2 speeches and there is also a midterm and final. She holds study sessions and gives opportunities for extra credit. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Alison is a great teacher. If you can get her for GCOM get her. Not many assignments except for your 3 major speeches. She always makes time for you if you need to practice your speech.
I got a 96 and didn't stress one bit. She's extremely personable and REASONABLE. Will give extentions if you need them! Our class was probably the most prepared for a final that was terribly constructed by the head of Gcom. She made sure we would all do well on it though and even gave us a 10 point curve. Her sole aim is to teach you. TAKE HER!!!!
Such a good professor! Shes really sweet and really helpful. She expects you to do whats required, but it's still not a ton of work. Definitely take her class, especially if you're nervous about giving speeches!
I love Alison! I hate hate HAAATTTEEE giving any type of presentation, but we only had two so it was very bearable. She presents the material in a very easy manner, and I easily got a B on the final exam and I barely studied...great Gcom teacher!
Alison is awesome. She's really chill and is def not one of those GCOM teachers that make the class harder than it should be. Both of the presentations are at the beginning to get them over with, which i liked. Other than that it's all of the other GCOM stuff everyone has todo, which she's really helpful with. TAKE HER. you get cookies :)
Take her!! She is a great teacher who really knows the material. You have 2 presentations which are over with in the first half of the semester. She's super understanding for people who don't like public speaking.
She's got great taste in music. And she's hot
Dr Fisher keeps it real. I wish she taught more classes.
AMAZING TEACHER. She was so down to earth and willing to help. Always in an awesome mood. At the end of the year i calculated my grade and checked blackboard to see hat i would receive as a grade and all signs said B and she gave me an A! Didn't suck up or anything. I think I'm in love
Alison is great! She makes the classes fun and relevant, the presentations aren't hard and there are only two of them. She keeps it straightforward and knows what shes talking about.
Speeches are graded on improvement, instead of being compared with those in your group. Lots of cushion points, take advantage! Tests are bogus and she knows it, so she really helps you out. FUN CLASS!
TAKE ALLISON FISHER! Although our class did more than others, she wants for her students to succeed. In GROUP presentations, that's just what you do. We didn't have any individual projects. Also, we didn't have tests and only had a couple quizzes. Instead, she grades based on participation both in the classroom AND blackboard, but that's really
I didn't know anything about feminism before this class and she made me like it and say, YES, I'm a feminist!
Alison is one of the most down to Earth teachers I have had. She has a great sense of humor, and doesn't make this class harder than it should be. She really helps you out throughout the semester and wants you to get a good grade. Take her!!
Dr Fisher is tough, but in a good way!
I'm sad I had her my last semester! She's really helpful and easy to approach.
Best prof I've had
Dr. Fisher grades hard on writing and make sure you make educated remarks in class!
Dr Fisher is a lot of fun, but the class can be challenging at test and presentation times.
Dr. Fisher is one of the best profs I've ever had. I just wish I knew about her before my senior year!
She's very cool. Do the work.
She is a great professor! She helps you out a lot and go to her office hours! Take her!
Allison does the best she can with the class. She is so sweet and helpful especially if you go to her office hours. She will do anything she can in her power to meet with you. The class itself is kind of boring but she provides relevant examples and the work load isn't too bad.
Dr. Fisher can be hard, but if you pay attention you'll be cool
We just watched Mean Girls & did a scavenger hunt. Freakin awesome
She's a sweetheart from the Midwest. What else is there to say?
Allison is awesome! She doesn't give any written tests which is awesome. She is so understanding and will do anything to make sure you understand the material. she is willing to help no matter what and really wants to see her students succeed. I put about 3 hours in a week and got an A. TAKE HER
Dr. Fisher is tough, but she's fun. The readings are weird sometimes.
Alison is awesome! Please take her if you can! She is so helpful and she will make sure you understand everything! You don't even need to put to much effort in because she makes it so easy to understand with her millions of examples! She is just so awesome, love her!
TAKE HER! She is the best! She was always super helpful, and really wanted what was best for the class. She offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, and is very helpful during office hours if you are struggling with your speeches. Only MidTerm/Final, and maybe a few pop quizzes.
She is SUCH a great teacher! I've learned sooo much. She's great at giving examples to real life to help you understand things and is really funny also. Tries to make the class fun. Just do the readings and pay attention and you'll do fine.
Alison was the best part of this class. When I saw this class on my schedule, I swore it would be the death of me. Alison was awesome though. Her lectures are clear and to-the-point and the examples she gives are relevant and interesting. Just pay attention in class, read when she tells you, and you'll be fine. Take her, she's great!!!
She is awesome. My favorite teacher of the semester. If you show up to class and do respectable on your speeches you will get an A. Her humor brightens what would be a rather dull subject.
Take her, she's great! One of my favorite professors at JMU. She's passionate, fun, and extremely helpful througout the semester.
This class is not what you think it is. The description on ecampus does not fully explain what you're getting into. It's actually a performance class where you "interpret" literature by reading & performing it to the class. THAT BEING SAID, it's actually rather awesome and not hard and the class gets really close. Alison is AWESOME too so take it!!
Dr. Bodkin is a very nice lady and the course was not that hard at all. However, she didn't really help my group very much and was very confusing when giving instructions. Overall she is very nice and understanding but a bit confusing when is comes to projects.
I would suggest everyone to take this class. Professor Alison is a realistic grader and gives many group projects/speeches. Tests aren't tough and an overall great teacher.
Dr. Bodkin is one of my favorite professors at JMU. She is hilarious, though extremely feminist and tries to push that onto her students. The class was very easy, never even opened my book once. The group presentations are interesting and fun, you get to pick your topics. She gives TONS of extra credit as well. Just show up, it's an EASY A!
This lady is so frustrating. She is very confusing when giving instructions. Depending on the day she either likes your speech or doesn't. She tells you you're allowed to use cards in your speeches but then takes points off for using them. Her tests are very easy, but she grades extremely hard on the speeches. She completely rips your speech apart.
Comes to class late, leaves to set up printer or go to the bathroom, overall just very scattered. She is a very tough grader on your speeches and is very moody about where she gives points. Basically makes you memorize your speech or she takes off major points. Always get out of class early because she schedules personal meetings during class time.
Fastest 40 meter dash time in high heels. Expert printer installer. Always comes to class late and leaves early. She's hilarious to watch be absolutely ridiculous, and its funny how much she frustrates other students. Only allows 2 missed classes, and doesn't give much time to prepare group speeches. The class was harder than it should have been
Don't expect "Dr." Bodkin to teach anything for the tests (or at all), she is a master at wasting class time and creating bizarre diversions from actually teaching or learning necessary material. Additionally, you get no warning as to when the next speech is, and then you get barely enough time to prepare your presentation. Take at your own risk.
Comes late to class, leaves early for personal matters. Changes her mind about everything. Asks the class what we want to do, does the complete opposite. Never clear about assignments. Dropped an exam that would have boosted my grade. Doesn't go over powerpoints - you just ask her questions about the powerpoint. Barely reviewed for the final.
Overall, she made the class much more difficult than it had to be. She barely reviewed the material, had super unclear grading criteria and was extremely passive aggressive and petty. Almost never came to class on time, and left for personal reasons. You can tell she is passionate about the subject, but does not connect well with students. Avoid.
Professor/Dr. Bodkin was completely unorganized. She came late to class every single time, and it was an 8 am. She never had a plan for what we would be doing in class, and often forgot about teaching lectures or going over powerpoints entirely. Really bad feedback on speeches, not helpful at all. Complete waste of time. DONT TAKE.
Dr. Bodkin is an amazing person and professor. She means so well. However, being in a class that was all speeches and nothing else, she tended to be extremely grade disorganized and vague on feedback. Sometimes I got grades on my speeches that I thought were above expectations and I would earn a low grade without any justified or specific feedback.
This is the first time she taught 241. Bodkin is always unorganized, NEVER emails anyone back, not helpful, and screwed over her sections on almost every occasion. This class gets us into the major and is very stressful and she only made it worse. DO NOT TAKE!!!
very unorganized the class rotates who lectures each day and without fail the day Bodkin lectured i always left the class more confused than when i came into the class having read the chapter didn't have her for 241 but i assume she'd be the same way try to avoid her she's sweet but will make you confused and in this class you don't want to risk it
Great class!
Dr. Bodkin is all over the place. She creates schedules but rarely sticks to her plans. She does not give explicit grading criteria, but she has specific requirements that she expects from you. She does grade on the tougher side. It is obvious that she means well, but her expectations of her students do not align with her lower quality of teaching.
Loved this class. Extremely interesting and Bodkin tells you like it is. It's a lot of work in this class but it tests who's ready for the major. She is totally willing to help her students and gives great feedback on papers. She's funny, intelligent, and a great professor to go to for help.
I LOVE DR. Bodkin! She was an amazing professor and really made the SCOM Major admission process very enjoyable. She was a tough grader but she also gave amazing feedback which helped me to get the grades i wanted on papers, etc.
I LOVE Bodkin. I was nervous to take this class, but she is seriously so helpful and inspirational. Participation matters, so speak up. Bodkin is great at creating a comfortable atmosphere that can embody various perspectives and viewpoints.
I'm obsessed with Dr. Bodkin! She is so helpful when it comes to questions and the papers in specific! She will go out of her way to help you if you show you are trying and if you ask, so definitely go to her office hours! Its a bit difficult getting into the major, but taking Bodkin will help you in many different ways! TAKE HER! :)
Bodkin really cares about her students! She understands the stress of being a student and makes time to help each and everyone of her students. Only 3 grades (2 essays, one group presentation), so you need to work hard to get good grades! She does add participation points at the end so make sure you never skip class!
Alison is considered the "bad" prof out of the choices for 240/241. I thought she ended up being the best. I think she is an easy grader for the most part and her personality really makes the class environment fun. The biggest downfall to her is she is extremely hard to reach out of class. She barely answers emails, get her cell #
I LOVE DR. BODKIN!! She made presentations so much easier for me! If you don't take her somethings wrong with you!!
My favorite professors out of the 3 for 240. She is so understanding and caring and provides great feedback on the papers and final presentation. 5 pop quizzes throughout the Friday lab section and the lecture was extremely hard so you need to take really good notes so you can do well on the quizzes, they are 40% of your grade! Take her if you can!
LOVE HER!! best choice out of all of the 240/241 teachers. if you don't read the book then you're going to be lost during discussions and the reading quizzes. midterm, final, and papers. such a good teacher and really cares about her students. I love her lectures as well. she wants everyone to succeed in this class. Bodkin is awesome.
I had Bodkin for SCOM 240 and 302 and she is now my major advisor. I can not recommend her enough, she genuinely cares about her students and is so caring and helpful if you need some extra help. Definitely the best of the 240/241 professors and just an incredible and inspirational woman.
Dr Bodkin said she was affected by 2020 and expected us to be stressed as well, so she said she will assign a take home final with at least 10 days to complete it. Six days before the final was due, she finally released the assignment: an 8-10 page paper. Why claim you pretend to care about our mental health? The kindness we gave was not returned.
Bodkin was one of my favorite professors I've ever had! She really cares about her students and wants everyone to do well. She is very good at responding to your emails and any questions you have. MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND CLASS! Attendance does matter... I made that mistake at the beginning of the semester. Definitely take her!
Professor Bodkin is great! I enjoyed her class a lot, since she's a great teacher. The coursework wasn't the most interesting, but she went out of her way to make sure we understood what we were doing and had plenty of time and help to do good.
If you are an incoming freshman I highly recommend taking her class. She made the transition to college so much easier and so enjoyable. She is a professor that truly cares about each and every one of her students and went out of her way to build a relationship with each student. She is a very reasonable grader, it is an easy A class.
Friendly. She provided a welcoming judgment free environment. She tends to go on tangents that can get confusing at times, but she tries her best to accommodate all her students. Use her office hours especially if you have any questions/concerns about the papers. Good feedback. Glad I had her.
She is literally the sweetest person ever and is very open-minded and makes sure to monitor class discussions so everyone feels comfortable. We did have partnered facilitations (two students hold discussion on their selected reading). It was my fave class and it was so much fun.
I loved Bodkins's class last Fall. I had her for 240 and 240L, and this was my second time retaking it, she was a great professor can tell she is passionate about the subject and wants you to do well in the class. I asked questions and she answered them in depth and made sure we were prepared if you have the chance to take her do it.
Bodkin isn't nice, but she tries to be good.
Bodkin acts like she cares about students by being quirky but she doesnt. She lectures and just reads off a powerpoint that's directly from the textbook, so its pointless to go into class. She makes attendance 15% of your grade so you have to go. She likes to act like she's cool but she's just annoying and being in her class is so boring.
Bodkin is a great teacher. I mean she is one of the GOATs of the SCOM department at JMU. This class is a good way to learn how communication is handled throughout social movements in history. How it can be used for good or bad. Love Bodkin!
Professor Bodkin was one of the best professors I have ever had. She loves her work, wants to see you succeed, and goes to her office hours. She loves when people come and ask for help. She really made me enjoy what I was learning and broke it down nicely so we knew the material in class. Please take her, you won't regret it so take Bodkin
Professor Bodkin was one of my favorite professors. She is so sweet, thoughtful and understanding. It's very obvious that she cares about her students. Her class was not hard at all with barely any tests or quizzes. The final was difficult and she does go on tangents sometimes. Overall a good and easy class.
Bodkin works hard to ensure her students have a good understanding of the content and opportunities to get fair grades. There are quizzes every lab, you can use your notes; always handwrite your notes during lectures! The textbook is a need but easy read. The other two professors are super sweet, but Bodkin is best for essays!
The course is team-taught by Bsumek, Okamoto, and Bodkin, who split up the main lectures. Each lead solo Friday labs, where pop quizzes are given. Readings are crucial, you will fail if you don't read!!! There's a lot of theories to grasp and apply, but the professors are helpful if you're struggling. Expect a midterm, final, and two papers.
Bodkin is a sweetheart. She is incredibly helpful on assignments, especially papers. She is very funny and clearly cares a lot about her students. Take her if you can! Lab was especially fun with her.
Professor Bodkin is one of the best professors I have had at JMU. She is straight to the point and quite funny. She keeps the class engaged and is not a boring lecturer. She is a tough grader on papers, but gives good feedback when asked. Goes over what we need to know before pop quizzes. Definitely take her for 240L if you can!
240 is an absolute nightmare, but Bodkin tries her best to make it bearable. She is kind and wants her students to succeed; however, she is a very tough grader and tends to go off on random tangents. You HAVE to attend the lectures and labs to pass. I also recommend asking Bodkin for feedback on paper and project drafts before turning them in.
240 is not a fun class but Bodkin does her best to make it bearable. She can be a tough grader but gives good feedback that makes sense. I think the biggest problem with 240 is that the three professors disagree with on, policies making things confusing for the students. She is the best teacher of the three though, grading and lecture wise.
