She talks to fast, and she teaches the course as if it was a 400 level, when in reality it is a Intro. class. Also, her TA's are power hungry, and they love to see you fail. And she is a feminist.
She talks way too fast and the class grading goes midterm 20% (which is easy). a paper that is like 35%(T.A. young grades hard), then the final is the rest and that is harder, she says it is cumulative, but it really isn't
If you are a polisci major and you are have to take this class steer clear..wait for another section that being said I have to add that she will teach you alot, for example her midterm study guide had over 100 terms to look up! Her TA are power hungry Nazi's also who cant wait to haze undergraduates
Professor Renteln has no good intentions during her lectures. She makes no sense as far as the direction of her lectures. They're very random, dry, and read from lecture notes. You'll either fall asleep in class or spend every week telling yourself not to go to class. It's a waste of time.
i really enjoyed her law and public policy class. i have no idea what the other commentators are talking about. i learned a lot. engaging topics in lecture. organized. good speaker. good times.
Don't take this class as a general ed requirement; take this prof only if you really want to study law. she teaches like everyone is prepping for law school.

Ok, she speed talks her lectures. She knows this and ask her to slow down. I took classes with her 3 times. If you go to office hours, she really takes the time to explain and is interested in you understanding the subject. And she knows what she is talkin
As a PoliSci major Professor Renteln was easily my favorite hands down. Yes she a hard teacher, her course work is demanding and requires the ability to think for yourself. And yes does expect more than just average work! She knows her stuff, and can spot b.s. a mile away. People who do well, are the ones who do the reading and want to be challenged. She's also one of the few professors out there that actually cares about her students too.
i took renteln a few summers ago. she is very smart and outspoken. she has very liberal viewpoints which, on face is not a problem, however, she often fails to bring up conservative criticisms of the views that she espouses in class, making it seem as though her viewpoint is the only viewpoint. debating opposing viewpoints in class will raise you participation grade, but you had better have a sound argument, because she will be ready to disect and make you look stupid if you haven't put some thought into it
Wow some people can't handle a good professor I guess. Had her for two classes, International Law and Law + Public Policy and LOVED her. She's an amazing professor, obviously professors are generally very educated anyway but you can easily tell just from her lectures that she has natural intelligence. Her lectures are brilliant, I've never learned more from any other professor and she was very nice, at least to me.
Professor Renteln is a great professor. If you want to develop some serious research skills, she is the perfect person to take a class from. Her tests are really not that hard at all. If you study the review sheets, they are quite easy and incredibly straight forward. I would highly recommend any class by her to either majors or nonmajors.
Renteln obviously cares about the subject matter of the class. She teaches with a passion but is also unclear and fast when covering the material. I can barely survive the last 20 mins after taking so many notes. Her tests are easy and if you make the effort to show up you should be fine. There's alot of information though be prepared to study
I have no doubt that she is intelligent. She is about as far left a professor as I've had though. Take her class if you are prepared to be taught how her view is the only legitimate one, and things like first amendment rights are just a silly nuisance in the face of hate speech or unwanted sexual advances. Viva la International Law!
Goodness! If you are looking to prolong your lifespan: take her class. Time never went so slow. She just stands and talks on and on. She floods you with court cases and other irrelevant information and then subsequently tests you on none of it. I have never filled up more pages with notes in my life. Good luck!
she knows her material well, but she's bad at teaching it. talks way too fast, never writes on the board, no powerpoint. just her rambling on and on and she rarely slows down, even if you ask her to. term paper: sorta throws you out to do it yourself, but definitely not at all helpful. so glad I'm taking this class Pass/Fail for the sake of my GPA
BRILLIANT WOMAN, TERRIBLE INSTRUCTOR. Goes thru lectures too quickly. She isnt helpful at all if you go see her. I met with her and she acted like I was wasting her time and offered no help for the final paper. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Prof. Renteln is brilliant, there is absolutely no denying that. The course content is very interesting. However, she speaks ridiculously fast during lectures which makes it nearly impossible to understand the material/take accurate notes.Tests are based entirely on lectures....see the problem? Other than that, it's a pretty good course to take.
Way too hard for a GE course. If you take it with P/NP, it may be good.
Very brilliant professor. Clearly knows her subject. Speaks very complexly and difficult to understand lecture concepts. Very fair on exams and gives lots of choice so don't have to know everything she talks about, about half. Very nice and willing to help but office hours are often as confusing as lecture. VERY HARD GE. Prepare to work hard
Prof. Renteln is very intelligent and her lectures cover very interesting topics/cases. However, as many have already mentioned, she speaks very quickly and the tests are based mostly on her lectures. I personally enjoyed the course& think it's a great intro for those interested in law. However, it is a little too intense for a 100 level GE course.
very difficult class. she rambles on and on but the subject matter is decently interesting. huge research paper that will have your tearing out your hair. she takes it way too seriously for a GE
Professor was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and passionate. There is a ton of required readings but no real homework, except for the term paper. She expects a lot from her students. Lectures are thorough but she goes very quickly. Technically, this class assumes no prior knowledge but a posc or law background would be very helpful.
She speaks at the speed of light, however her lectures are interesting and there is only a mid term, final and one paper, however the final is cumulative and getting an A requires a LOT of work! really good class, but only if you are interested in law!
waaaayyyyyy to hard for a GE. I took this class thinking I wanted to go to Law school. And now I don't. The final paper is wayyy to hard and she takes it wayy too seriously. This should be an upper division class. The only thing that kinda helped was my TA. But definitely not an easy A. not even an easy B. You have to be a lawyer to enjoy the class
Can't lecture
She is really knowledgeable, but it is a tough class. It is one of the weed out classes for law, you have to love it to do well. She is super smart and really nice but it is hard. There is a 12 page paper, mid term and final and thats it. Recommend if you love law, not as a GE.
Her lectures are disorganized & she speaks very fast. There's quite a bit of reading, but manageable. Tests aren't hard b/c she gives you exactly what will be on them. Lecture not mandatory, but it is highly recommended b/c almost everything she speaks about in class will most likely be on exams. Midterm & Final, and a 10-15 pg research paper!
For all the reading and work I did for this class I thought I deserved a better grade. Go to class, take good notes and be cool with the TAs. My TA made this class easy, but over all very interesting material that is covered throughout the semester. I highly recommend it.
I am confused why so many of you have rated her low. True, she speaks very fast but when students inquire about visuals, she is happy to accompodate and provide slides. She prepares students very well for e mid term and final. There is also a paper project 15 pages due with topics that she picks. The research was complex because of the USC library.
She is tough but fair. With the course matter, there is a lot, but it is interesting and she is a fair grader. As long as you look at the study guide thoroughly you will be fine. Very intelligent woman.
lecture style is repetitive and can get tedious but if you actually listen, its really interesting, plus professor renteln is totally hilarious. lots of material but very little gets tested so pretty easy to do well in the class! also literally no hw, nobody does the reading because it never gets checked anyways
insane! She is just lecturing, and giving 12 page papers.. what the hek.
Renteln is a rockstar in her field. Her exams were not as hard as the study guides and lectures made it seem like they were going to be. The thing I had the hardest time with was her rate of speech. Like Busta Rhymes... :(
If you have any interest in law I would highly recommend this class. If you sit down and really study the material a few days before the exam you can get away with doing little reading and missing some classes. Also, though she seems brusque, she was really quite funny and a nice professor. Also BRILLIANT.
Renteln has a wealth of knowledge to present, so her lectures very helpful to attend. There are certainly a lot of cases to understand, but clear, referable notes and general interest in the subject go a long way. She cares a lot about students and is incredibly intelligent, so her office hours are rewarding to attend.
Renteln is well-spoken, thoughtful, and intelligent, and she has a wealth of information and personal experience that really enriches the lectures. Quite a bit of reading, but it's all relevant and interesting. Paper seems like a lot, but it really isn't that bad. Marry the study guide, enjoy controversial discussions in section, and fight on.
Prof. Renteln is without a doubt a complete genius. She is intense and brilliant and has very high expectations of her students. If you participate in class, expect that she will question everything you say. Amazing class if you like lawpolitics. But I would not recommend taking POSC 130 with her for a GE if you have no interest in law.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Lectures are impossible to decipher. 15 page paper is very difficult to write because the subject matter is like another language and she does not allow TA to help. Ignores all requests to make the lectures and materials easier to understand. Total nightmare class. Never worked so hard for a B+ in my life. Doesn't give A's
Not the easiest GE, but will expand your legal knowledge slightly. She's a highly educated professor who's very into academics and takes the GE a little to seriously. A lot o assigned readings. Midterms are very content heavy and she doesn't help out much. It's very possible to get an A- but you have to work pretty hard for it. TA's help out a lot.
Unquestionably the worst professor I have had at USC. Socially inept, no organization to her lectures or the class, refuses to help her students.
Essays are incredibly hard. Expect research papers that take forever to prepare for. Reading is optional, but you will fell a little lost if you don't do it.
This class is incredibly difficult and sometimes quite disorganized, but the topics are interesting and the process of writing the two challenging essays forced me to grow as a writer.
She is so incredibly knowledgeable! If you are interested in law school take her! She is inspirational! There is a lot of work so be prepared to do it but it is worth it, you learn a ton!
Arduous and tedious. Assignments are not well articulated, then she has the audacity to grade difficulty? Didn't get the A even though I came to every class, did readings, tried hard. Avoid if you love your GPA.
If you are not pre-law, do not take this class. I took it hoping to learn more about the judicial system. She will assume you know everything about the judicial system already and lecture VERY fast. The exams are cumulative and you are expected to know every single court case and topic she ever talked about.
This class's lectures are extremely long, that hour and 20 minutes goes by really really slow. Her lectures are dry and boring. I've skipped class so many times but you should read what she assigns or else you'll fail the midterm/final. The paper is 12 pages (used to be 18) and is LONG, kinda hard but you'll be ok. Good luck!
The lecture is badly organized. you will not get slides before lecture, slides contain very brief things and she clicks the slides very quickly, so it's hard to keep note useful. The paper is 12 pages. Literally any of your questions on it will not be answered, the answer is always: the professor doesn't allow me to say it. Spend lots of time
She's incredibly knowledgable, but for a intro 100-level GE, its a bit much... Literally none of my 400-level classes (econ and poli sci) have taken as much time as this class has. Oh. and it seems like she instructs the TA's to be as ambiguous as possible when answering students questions... I would literally rather do calc 3.
Renteln is incredibly intelligent and bright. The class is challenging, and it is hard to do well if you don't show up, but the information is all very interesting. The paper seems overwhelming, but isn't horrible. Visiting her office hours can lead to some of the most interesting conversations and research opportunities on campus.
Don't take unless you're prelaw. A million readings, lectures are confusing and disorganized, she pretty much shuts down any opinion you have in favor of her own. The paper is a pain (the topic choices are super dull) and lectures drag forever. There are a million better ways to teach this material.
If you aren't a POSC major, don't take this class. You only receive your midterm test grade, your paper and final, you'll have no idea. Your TA won't know either and won't be able to tell you. Professor Renteln gives out C's. She doesn't care about you unless you go to office hours. This class is hard. BEWARE. This class gave me my first C.
She knows the material very well (I learned a lot about the law and judicial system-which was my goal by taking the class). Written midterm/final (4-6 short prompts,1 long essay prompt). The paper seems worse than it is, but it is not easy. Attendance is a must but not the readings (I skipped a lot- there literally was not enough time to read all).
This class has no clarity until the last few weeks of the semester. The professor over complicated the material and isn't very friendly. With the help of the TA it was manageable.
Professor Renteln is a force of nature, her classes are extremely difficult if you're not headed to law school. Ive taken 3 classes with her now and I definitely recommend her. She's one of the most respected scholars in her fields of study so probably someone good to ask for a rec letter.
Professor Reteln is definitely a very smart person with a lot of knowledge to impart. I really think that if she paced the lectures and didn't discuss so many topics in one lecture, I may have enjoyed the class more. The 12 page paper with two interview requirements was also stressful, almost too stressful for a 130 class.
Professor Renteln is rather rude to her students. The class is dry, and we understand the material itself is rather dry, but she doesn't do anything to make it interesting. Sometimes it seems like she's reading her notes for the first time in a year as she is lecturing. This class is a GE, I took it for my major, but its way too difficult for a GE.
Amazing class if you're interested in social issues and law. ALWAYS go to class and discussion. ALWAYS do the readings (they're pretty short, you have to read one book). PARTICIPATE. The midterm and final are not hard if you review a bit and the paper is pretty easy (12 pgs). Super interesting. She has fixed everything people complain about here.
I don't understand why people complain. She is super nice and hilarious. She takes the time to find really interesting cases. Work is reasonable. She is one of the gems in USC and if you're interested in political science, you have to be stupid to not take her. She is one of the most inspiring professors and a truly brilliant. WILL NOT REGRET.
She really likes to hear herself talk. Whenever someone has an opinion in class that doesn't agree with her's she will either shut the person down or twist their words to support herself. She assigns lots of readings which I found out after taking the midterm were widely irrelevant for her tests and only served to give some amount of context.
One of the best profs I've ever had at USC. Unbelievably brilliant. Not sure why people say she's hard go to class and take good notes, do the reading of the novel (weekly readings don't matter), watch the movie. You'll learn so much in this class, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're not at least a bit interested in politics/policy/law.
great professor/ always works to have interesting readings/ lectures. All lectures can sometimes get boring, but her's rarely reach that. Must follow along very attentively and take notes. Doing the readings is a must, and the study guid has the same essay questions as a test. You will leave this class with an amazing understanding of human rights
This class is taken way too seriously to be a GE. Good professor and interesting class, but the workload needs to be taken down more than a few notches
One of the most brilliant professors at this school. She is so knowledgable about law, current events, politics, etc. that I've learned more from this GE than my major classes. If you aren't interested in law, it's likely going to be too much reading. But don't be misguided by harsh ratings--Renteln is super intelligent and you will learn a lot.
Overall she is a good professor, however her teaching style is not the best. Doesn't allow laptops in lectures; powerpoints are disorganized and not helpful. The midterm is almost the same as the study guide which makes it easier; the discussions are SO helpful, because they sum up and organize the most important parts. Discussions have attendance.
She seems like a tough professor at first, but she can be super personable if you make the effort to go to office hours. There is A LOT of reading, so don't take this unless you LOVE political science, law, etc. Lots of people skip class, but I wouldn't recommend it because there's so much information that she doesn't include in the slideshow.
Incredibly intelligent woman. She can be a bit intimidating at first - she's brilliant and comes to every class dressed perfectly. This isn't an easy GE - there's lots of reading and the term paper is a lot of work but I've really learned a lot. She encourages you to go to office hours and is really a wonderful human. One of USC's gems.
Prof Renteln is very intelligent and has lived her life practicing and interpreting the law. That said, she does not really understand that her students may not understand the basics of legal reasoning, while she emphasizes the details. Her lectures are very fast and sometimes hard to follow. She is a very tough grader so know everything and more.
class is very basic, pretty much just a survey of political science topics. I agree with what has been said about her, that she takes it way too seriously, especially for a class being offered as a GE. also be prepared to not be able to express ideas that aren't far left - I am a democrat myself but still often rolled my eyes at some of the TA
For a few days before the midterm, a few weeks in November when the term paper is due, and a few days before the final, you will need to work/study your butt off. Other than that, she assigns readings on the syllabus I didn't find necessary, so the rest of the time it's not too bad. She's a good teacher who cares too. Not the easiest GE though.
She's an incredibly intelligent woman. If you are unsure whether you want to participate in the law field take this class and you will find out. She is not as intimidating as she seems if you go to her office hours she is really willing to help you. Be friends with the TA as they will help you a lot it really matters what TA you get in this course!
She's a very intelligent person but the amount of work she assigns is ridiculously too much for a 100 level course.
Very rarely went to lecture but still got an A. It's all about skimming the readers for their main ideas, and then memorization for the exams. That said, I didn't study for the midterm and still got an A, because she's nice and gives you a lot of choices for which questions to answer. The paper was quite a bit of effort, but that was about it.
130 is a lot of work. Incredibly high expectations for students. My final completed study guide was 40 pages and didn't cover everything. Final paper is intense, plus you have to contact people connected to a supreme court case. Can't recommend to everyone, but you will learn the material. Oh, and very left-leaning student body in my class.
Difficult class. Not the hardest, but definitely get ready to read. The entirety of our grade depended on our final exam and 10 page paper, as the midterm became something that could only improve your grade. There was very little help with either, as Renteln would simply dump a list of phrases into a Word doc and send it to us. Would not recommend.
Professor Renteln is not only an amazing professor but an amazing human being. Having the chance to learn from her has singlehandedly made my experience at USC meaningful. I HIGHLY recommend you go to her office hours and get to know her - she's phenomenally accomplished but super humble. And other POSC classes are cakewalks after hers.
Educators like Professor Renteln are the reason why USC is such a prestigious university. Her POSC 130 class completely changed my worldview. Although it was hard I would do it again because I learned so much. Many students have her once and end up taking every class with her they can.
Professor Renteln is so intelligent. Her class is very organized and easy to understand. The tests and paper are straightforward. She is very kind and always asks thought-provoking questions. Also, she acknowledges the difficult time we are going through in politics. I really like her a lot!
One midterm, one final, one 10-12 page paper, and a ton of reading. Discussion participation counts 10%. Pretty hard but it is possible to get an A. Overall pretty mediocre
The only bad things about this class are the paper and the non helpfulness of her study guides. The paper has to be 12 pages with interviews and endnotes and a bibliography, which I think is too much for a level 100 GE class. The study guides are just 6-8 page lists of super vague terms that she gives out less than a week before the test.
for a poli sci major, not bad as an intro course, lectures not mandatory at all. study guides are just pages of terms that are not helpful and way too much information for a single midterm or final. aside from that, its just a research paper (12-15 pgs) she doesn't let you use laptops in class which is so annoying because powerpoints arent helpful
She is nice, lectures are boring because she just reads verbatim from her pp. She hates and I mean hates technology, she complains incessantly about it. I would have probably dropped the course if it was not for my TA Elli M, she made the course bearable and entertaining. There is one midterm (can only help your grade), a 12 pg paper and a final.
Professor Renten is extremely intelligent and accomplished, but this class is very difficult. The course covers a large amount of information and there are not many resources outside of attending lecture. Her lectures are very boring and unclear. She tries to create a discussion environment but I would've rather her give the information clearly.
If you aren't getting major/minor credit DON't take this class. Renteln lectures from the first to last minute of class and talks fast. Bright side: material is usually interesting. Reading is heavy but not essential except for the ones she mentions in class. Tests are memorization heavy, know everything she says. Expect 5 pages of notes/class
There are 3 grades in this class. You will never know what you got on two of them. The class is entirely lecture based, and although Renteln posts the powerpoints, they're pretty much impossible to follow unless she is lecturing. Definitely not worth as a GEfind something easier.
The final made me realize I shouldve done the readings all along because they were interesting and wouldve helped me avoid confusing during lecture. Regardless, take Renteln! She cares so much about her students and inspires them to be better people on a daily basis. Her wit and intellect are matched by few. I will miss her class next semester.
Her class is based completely on lectures but you don't have to go because she gives a study guide for the midterm and the final. The study guide is really easy and if you just do it you should be fine. The reading material is recommended but I rarely read and I passed the exams so it's not really needed.
Very interesting class, take it if you're a Political Science major. However, for a GE it is a rather good deal of work and can be difficult. There's a massive paper in the middle of the semester. Grade is entirely based on 3 things. Renteln is a great and engaging lecturer and makes the class fun, but isn't entirely clear on paper expectations
She is SO caring and kind and her lectures are hilarious. You don't need to read the textbook bc she gives you the questions for the test before hand, so you can look up cases then on google. You have to work for your A, but it is possible and so rewarding. no homework. the class is so fun that you want to attend even tho its not mandatory.
didn't think I was going to love her at first-- kinda boring lectures, not really much of an active class-- but she's awesome once you get to know her. she has a fascinating background, great personality, is super knowledgable, and cares a TON about her students. you can tell she wants you to succeed. her TA, Elli, is also amazing as hell.
Dr. Renteln is a very respected and knowledgable professor who brings a lot of wit to her lectures. Be ready to take in a lot of information, but it is a good base for political science majors.
If you're a POSC major, this would be an enjoyable class. However, if you're hoping for an easy GE, this is not it. There is so much reading per week, tests are extremely difficult, and TA's do not communicate with the professor at all. Grading and guidelines were vague and frustrating. Must put in a lot of time-consuming work in oder to succeed.
Prof. Renteln is very kind. But this class is just so hard as an intro-level class, especially it is a GE course. The tests are too hard and she only gives the study questions a week before the exam but everyone has so many exams and papers in the final week so you don't have much time to prepare the study guide. Good class but hard.
Prof Renteln and Elli are extremely intelligent people and outstanding in their fields of research. Good class for PoliSci majors, but this class was SO difficult for a GE--the TAs didn't communicate with the professor at all, and the readings just piled up. Few tests, but they were extremely difficult, and the study guides took HOURS to complete.
If you are a POSC major or just interested in law, take this class. I seriously have never learned so much or been more challenged, it was a law school class. Tough lady but fair and such an amazing resource. Unfortunately, if you have Kris it will make it difficult to succeed. The worst most pretentious TA I have ever had. Drop if you have him.
Interesting content, but her teaching style is sloppy. Needs way more structure.
Professor Renteln means well, but the move online has not suited her well. The midterm and final questions were extremely convoluted and hard to understand, the lectures were fairly dry and lacked student engagement, and discussion sections were not very useful. This is really hard for a GE class and also challenging for a POSC major.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. The material is super interesting but all the work and the reading is not worth it. The professor is so smart but she tends to forget that we are undergrads with other classes to worry about. There's three graded things, the midterm, research paper, and final. Each of these assignments are way harder than they should be.
the class was interesting, but this professor made me not want to go to class. lectures are very disorganized and she basically repeats the title of each reading instead of explaining what the readings are (which are very long) also she never lets people participate in discussion and cuts people off all the time, especially when she doesn't agree
Way too difficult for a GE class. The professor is knowledgable but disorganized. The grades are based on only three assignments and two of them are at the very end of the semester so you have no way to know how you're doing. Her grading is super unclear, she doesn't tell you what she's looking for or how grades are determined.
I really wanted to like this class as a Political Science major and Human Rights being my focus but this was one of the worst classes I've ever taken. Professor Renteln is so knowledgeable but I did not understand the material at all. Even the TA's were not on the same page as her. Super confusing and had to P/NP the class. Avoid if you can!
This class was very interesting, however our grade was based on the midterm, term paper, and final. Only the midterm grade was in by the end of the semester, so I had to opt for PNP. In online format, she wouldnt use power point because she wanted to see us. Lectures were heavy and she seldom followed her outlines she shared minutes before class
Incredibly disorganized class. Your grades are based on 3 grades so if you fail you don't know until the grades are already in. The grading systems + rubrics are unclear, the TAs and professor are not always on the same page in terms of material, assignments, or concepts. Also, she does refer to Black people as "Blacks" for the entire semester.
extremely difficult to learn from and work with.
She got angry at a student politely ASKING her to stop using the term "blacks" in the same sentence where she used "wh1te people", then rage quitted in the form of a five-minute break. Not a good look, Renteln, especially if you said you had experience talking about police brutality. Grow tf up.
Doesn't show up to lectures. The lectures are not worth going to, no notes can be taken about the things she says. Uses language such as calling minority groups "the blacks" or "the latinos". Expect to learn more from your TA and discussions. Her claims of having experience in the field don't align with her insensitivity and harsh personality.
she is notorious for being a hard professor even though she teaches mainly GE's. if she is not a major class avoid at all costs. class is extremely messy, she did not lecture for most of the semester and when she did she was incredibly insensitive. often says "white people" and "the blacks" or "the latinos"TA's also often do not know what happening
Don't take this class unless you're in the major. Grade solely depends on midterm, 12 page research paper, and final. The research paper required an insane amount of work for a GE class and it isn't worth your time. Lectures were just okay, not very helpful overall. Way too much reading assigned.
POSC 130- This class had a Massive research paper with barely any help, had to carry out interviews for a level 100 class which is ridiculous. Lectures are boring, TAs do not communicate at all with the professor. An abnormal amount of readings per week. Not worth it, do not take this class, this is not worth the work for a GE
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. Very little guidance given. Professor is intelligent, but has no clue how to run a class. TA's often confused on course work/plan, but they do their best. Seriously, if you don't have to take this class, don't. The term paper is horrible. So many all nighters. RIP my GPA.
She is clearly a smart and accomplished lady, but as a professor, she is not the best. The fact that all lectures were online does not help and for a 100-level course, the assignments are very involved.
She might be the worst teacher at USC. I, unfortunately, took this as a major course, and still struggled in a 100-level course. A 12-page research paper is something I expect from a 300-400 level course. Also, very dismissive and has poor communication with the TAs. Avoid her at all costs
This class is way too time-demanding for a 100-level course. The midterm was a 6-7 page essay. Twelve-page (!!) research paper has to include interviews and case analysis. This is understandable for an upper-division course, but not for this one. We shouldn't have to work this hard and devote this much time. Also slightly problematic and racist.
UNNECESSARILY DIFFICULT. The professor blew up during class after being criticized for always saying "blacks". We didn't know about the midterm until the week of. There's a 12pg research paper you have to interview people on the actual case which is near impossible, due a week before the final exam. Last half of semester is random guest lectures.
Accomplished & intelligent woman. Never responds to emails and is not very clear on instructions. Whole semester was online which made things much more difficult.
Professor Renteln is very knowledgable in the subject but ran a horrible class. Her lectures were hard to follow. Poor communication all around. Assigned a completely unreasonable amount of readings that a majority of which were not even mentioned during class. Class is graded on large papers that had unreasonable expectations for an 130. Avoid!
The professor is awful at responding to students and TAs, and does not communicate. Expect questions to go unanswered, uncovered material to be tested on, and non-comprehensive study guides. She has no notes on her slides, says only people who come to the actual lecture will get the information. Final exam was no note, no book. Hardest GE ever.
Man, I really wanted to like this class, but here's the rub. If you're a political science major and Renteln is your only option for 130, just take 110 or 120 instead.
The class began with an incident where Allison referred to a racial group with a derogatory term during a lecture which is totally unacceptable and I would assume she wasn't let go was because of her tenure. She is easily the worst teacher I've had at USC - for a 100 level GE this class is as difficult as my 300/400 political science level class
This class is absolutely awful. I am a first year student at USC, and decided to take a 130 level Political Science course (because it's my major) and it was one of the worst decisions. I learned nothing the entire semester and struggled a great deal. Do not take this class if you value your mental health.
Do NOT take this class. Professor Renteln is very intelligent but not fit to teach. Class is stressful, expectations are crazy, and she constantly canceled class and made us watch recordings instead. She is clearly not committed to this job. Grades are a mid-term, a horrendously long 12 pg. paper, & in-person final (even tho the class is online??)
def not a 100 level class. lots of readings, and ig it's lecture heavy. only 3-4 things graded so def a pass no pass class.
Definitely don't take this professor if you care about yourself. With 3 graded assignments, little guidance, and overall rude attitude - this class takes the cake for being quite bad. Just look at all the other reviews here! Even the people that gave decent reviews said they wouldn't take this class again... It's gotta count for something.
Singlehandedly the worst Professor. Does not value her students and canceled or had guest speakers teach for her more than she taught. Online all semester but an in-person final. Not only this, but she uses insensitive language and was defensive rather than apologetic when called out. Busy touring Europe at the expense of her students' success.
Seems like she would be a good professor, but overall super unorganized and inconsistent. Lectures started off good, but after a problematic scandal (that wasn't handled well on her end) it went downhill. Graded by three things: a 12 page essay, midterm (another essay) &final. Doesn't reply to emails. Waste of a GE, and definitely NOT a lvl100.
This is one of the worst classes I gave taken so far at usc. She assigns a ridiculous number of readings, is inaccessible by email, and grades us by 3 assignments which do not have clear instructions. Not to mention, she used an offensive term to describe a racial group and when asked to stop she humiliated that person in front of the class
Professor Renteln is extremely intelligent, and provides a lot of examples during lecture. The downfall is that there are only 3 assignments, and you are not sure if you are passing until it is too late. The final is a lot of info, divide the questions with a group to complete, focus on the questions. TA and Prof R are on different pages.
Professor Renteln seems very passionate about the material she covers, which I respect. Unfortunately, being knowledgeable about a subject doesn't inherently make one good at teaching. Things felt very disorganized, readings were excessive/heavy, and she often just rambled about topics with no powerpoint or structure whatsoever.
No. Do not take. Final is 40% of your grade, Mid-term is 25%, and you are tested on so much. The paper is like a graduate level research project. You will fail, or you will be miserable.
Literally do not take this class or any class this brilliant woman teaches. She is smart, but too much content, no visuals, extremely hard to follow and makes no sense at all. You will die trying to just pass this class.
Very intelligent Professor. Very much enjoyed the material!
Too much content and the class is very disorganized. Try to find another class because this one is way too hard for a GE. Professor is knowledgeable, but not so good at teaching.
Extremely disorganized. No slides during lectures, only talks for duration. Be prepared to take lots of notes. If you're taking this class, do not miss lecture. But, would not recommend this class.
I enjoyed this class but I also know a lot of students who suffered. The professor is exceptionally knowledgeable but is very lecture-heavy and uses little to no visual learning devices. The lectures though were insightful and very interesting. I probably would not recommend this class to someone who doesn't want to take on the excessive readings.
She is brilliant, however, do not take this class if you are not ready to read and take in all the content. Her lectures were very interesting but very heavy, and the class was a bit disorganized. The midterm was difficult and I know many if not the majority of the students struggled with this course regardless of the help received.
The class was extremely hard for an undergraduate course. Only graded on a major research paper that takes tons of hours and work, a midterm, and a final. Tests are hard bc she gives long lists of concepts for the study guide + you end up studying way too many terms for nothing. Rude to anyone who has a different opinion. Would never take again.
The prof was very knowledgeable but goes on tangents, making it difficult to know what information is relevant for the tests. She will not provide your grades throughout the course, so be prepared for a surprise when you receive your final grade. Your grade is composed of a midterm, final, and a hefty research paper. I don't recommend as a GE
Best Prof ever. You will learn especially if you are interested in the law field. She is very knowledgable. The discussions are good and she is honestly very kind. I do not understand the bad reviews maybe those are just people who are lazy. Take her! You will learn so much and won't regret it, but go to lecture!
Professor Renteln is very knowledgeable in her field. If you like Int Law, you will like the class. However, I found parts of lecture boring. Also, I wish she was more clear on assignments (what's graded, what we needed to do, etc). However, Professor Renteln is clearly a kind person who genuinely wants her students to do well.
Prof Renteln had interesting lectures, but often things would be really graphic with no warning prior to class and leave you feeling really heavy. In terms of grading, TAs grade really harshly and there's only like 3 things that go in the gradebook. I never got a grade for my term paper or final, I think they just made up a grade for oasis
Super charismatic, extremely knowledgeable in international law, and a real hoot to be around. Lectures interesting & gives opportunities for students to show their analytical skills by present cases in class. Be prepared to read & memorize A LOT. Research paper no joke either. Midterm (20%) Research Paper (40%) Final Exam (40%)
The professor is brilliant but lectures can be overwhelming. Lots of content with minimal visuals. Doing the readings and using Unstuck ai alongside other study tools like ChatGPT is a must to keep up. Challenging but engaging class, not recommended as a GE.
Professor Renteln is undoubtedly brilliant, with an immense background in human rights. If you're interested in this field, you should take the course. Her lectures are never boring, and she provides deeply insightful information about human rights. In office hours, she's easy to connect with and genuinely makes sure you understand the material.
Prof. Renteln is so smart and witty. Her lectures could get really boring, especially because she doesn't really provide anything other than a few bullet points and then talks for the rest of the time. She's super funny but could sometimes be condescending if a student had a different opinion from her.
Professor Renteln is brilliant, but isn't the best teacher. She lectures mostly without slides and goes on too many tangents that are not related to the course material that it gets very distracting and unable to figure out what's important material. Study guides for the midterm and final are helpful. There is one hefty research paper as well.
She is very knowledgeable and her lectures are interesting. But she gives SO much information and talks way to fast to be able to keep up. Research Paper is way too much work for a GE. Her study guides are so long you are going to end up doing them for HOURS maybe even DAYS. Way too much stress. Oh and they never input any grades.
This was a very interesting class, I took it as a GE, but it also worked for my major too (poli sci). Classes are not mandatory attendance, but if you do not go to class you will be very lost. She talks really fast and about multiple topics at once and her slide shows never correlates to what she is saying, recommended recording the lectures.
i know professor renteln is very knowledgeable and accomplished but i regret taking this class. as a polisci major, i can't believe this course also serves as a GE. insane amount of readings, harsh grading, and our final exam did not reflect the 8-page study guide we were given. this is the first polisci course where i've ever gotten below an A :/
