worst teacher ever, 100 pgs a week to read, very monotone in her speech, overall very boring and its just the first week. takes attendance but not attributed to grade. tests are esay and other papers are given. 5 assignments/tests overall and she drops the lowest 1.
I love history and always have, but after taking her class i'm begining to hate it. Her lectures are all but worthless and she's is very vague. She reduced Egypt into a letter from a farmer. And she spent a total of ten minutes on ancient greece. she whines about what we can't know. very boring and she makes no effort to learn your name.
Sandman, yessss? bring me a dream bumbum.. thats exactly what i think about in her class: sleeping. her voice will send you to sleep not to mention her lectures. tests are pretty much impossible, and she goes on spiels about how we dont really knwo anythign about history for about 45 minutes. Tons and tonsa nd tons of boring reading a night.
When you think of the sandman, you think of the childhood fairy that comes to put you to sleep at night. If you take this class you will soon learn that this is how Alison Sandman truely is. Her monotone voice will put anyone to sleep in a matter of mins. she is not helpful, very boring, and you need to know dates for EVERYTHING!tests hard
teacher is monotone and reading is hard but teacher keeps either the 4/5 highest grades and drops the lowest grade. test are hard but curve is very generous, i got a 55/70 on the first test(barely any studying) and i got a 97% on the test when it should have been like a low B. hard class but tests are curved like a ****, will def get an A
A little out there, but willing to help
Very long, boring class. Takes attendence and gives long lectures. Tests are hard, but curved alot. Must do groupwork and write individual papers. VERY HARD to stay awake during class... lots of notes, and tons (100-175 pgs.) of reading per week.
This lady is a god awful teacher. She is all over the place in her lectures and is very confusing. SHE IS THE ONLY HISTORY PROFESSOR TO MAKE PEOPLE MEMORIZE TIMES FOR EVERYTHING YOU LEARN. I will only say this once and please take my advice, DO NOT SIGN UP FOR ANY CLASS INVOLVING ALISON SANDMAN
She is by far the worst teacher i have ever had. She is sooooooo boring. Her lectures make no sence. The reading teaches you more. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE. she likes to fail students and has no remorse. I only wish she knew what being a freshman was like
OMG the worst teacher in the world. She never showed up for our first test and for our second test we had to remember everything that happened and their dates from the 8th centure BCE to the 8th century CE. I warn you do not take this class.
Stay away from any class taught by this professor. She is monotone, boring, and totally oblivious to everything. The work load for her gen ed classes are ridiculous, and her tests require intense memorization (8th century bce to 8th centure ce, for example). Stay away if you have any shed of intelligence...
I love history, I am a history major, and this woman is seriously making me reconsider majoring in history! She is boring and monotone, her tests would be impossible to get an A on if she didn't curve them, and she has ridiculous expectations of everyone in her classes. Whatever you do...STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!
People, give her a little credit. The class is difficult, but she curves the tests. The paper wasn't bad at all. Her lectures are boring and I'd have to admit I sleep through most of them, but I have an A in the class. She's a real nice lady, just not the greatest prof. The class is hard, but not impossible. If you can't avoid her, don't freak out
Not difficult to do well in the class. The curves make up for the hard tests. However, the woman is horribly boring and I would not recommend taking the class, even if it is an easy grade.
She's very accomodating, but very unorganized. She's extremely scatterbrained and takes a long time to return tests and papers. 3 papers, but the assignments are given at the last minute. she drops your lowest grade. the class itself is very boring, her lectures are very tedious and you come out knowing little more than you did before the lecture.
i am thinking about taping her lecture one day and using that to fall asleep when i am having trouble sleeping at night. she could not be anymore boring and she takes 5 years to grade assignments. she is willing to help you if you go to her office hours but if you are looking for an easy A or B in ghist, stay away from this hottie
It is impossible to stay away during her class. Her lectures are hard to follow. There's a lot of reading material and information she expects you to know. Go to her office with you essay drafts, she'll tell you what she's looking for. I barely read and I barely study. there is just too much information. I have a B thanks to the curve she gives
These people aren't kidding! It's almost impossible to stay awake during her class. I don't know if it's her voice or the material, but I couldn't keep my eyes open. Her lectures are hard to follow, tests are very difficult. She drops your lowest of 5 grades (3 papers, 2 tests). Not bad, but you could probably find an easier professor.
Hard class because there is so much info and she doesn't do the best job teaching, and it's very boring. However, she curves A LOT and drops 1 out of 5 grades, 2 tests and 3 papers, then the final. She's very willing to help. Not impossible to get an A, but you do have to work for it.
worst profeossr ever and her lectures are PAINFUL. Will give you VAGUE assignments and then expect you to work magic. Doesn't grade in a timely fashion, and expects you to do things in a timely fashion. Her comments on papers are not constructive, and make you feel stupid. Avoid her.
Given a choice between taking this class again, and fighting a bear with my bare hands...I'd take the bear.
If you could rate the professor with negative numbers I wouldnt hesitate! Sandman is by far the most boring professor Ive ever had. Her favorite quotes are "YUP" and "MMMHHHM."
This class was difficult to stay pay attention in. It became better as the semester went on. Very easy grader. But sometimes hard to follow.
Enter Sandman.....we're off to never never land
She is the most confusing person you'll ever meet. Really interesting topic, but the readings were original documents so you were confused going into class. Lots of reading too, think 50 pages per class. Even more confusing coming out of class as she didn't answer any questions...STAY AWAY!!! She might put you to sleep too.
Dont you dare
sandman is the worst teacher ever. shes tripping on acid pretty much every single class.
She is a little weird but she is actually a really good professor.Participation=30% of grade; no book; and I never read any of the readings. Two unit proposals, two presentations, two bibliographies. This class is a lot easier than I thought it would be.Go to her office hours, she helps you out SO MUCH!!! I don't agree with a lot of these reviews.
she's really willing to work with students, especially outside of class. very passionate about her work and very intelligent. she really put a lot of effort into making this a good class and i commend her for that.
BORING! Absolutely boring. We had to read the most random BS throughout the entire class. She is a really kind lady, but if you are not interested in what she is, then you will have issues. Futhermore, she plays "devil's advocate" way too often, and its quite frustrating.
She is smart and knowledgeable about what she is teaching approaching all of the standard World History themes and topics from some rather abstract directions. Her papers sometimes have some odd standards or style, but she does her best to ensure that all of her students suceed
Dr. Sandman is a great teacher. She comes at subjects in a totally different way than you are used to, which keeps things interesting. As long as you spend time on the papers and actually study for the tests you will do fine.
Dr. Sandman is by far one of the smartest professors in the History Department and is one of the nicest and most helpful professors I've ever had while here. Her class can certainly be difficult but if you put work into it you will do fine. She is so easy to approach with any questions and will make time for her students. A great prof...take her!
Interesting professor, teaches in a different style. She's only boring if you don't take notes during class, so just TAKE NOTES! Ridiculous amount of reading assigned but I haven't opened the book once and have been getting B's. She much rather you know how everything fits together rather than remember random names and dates. Give her a chance.
She is probably the wierdest professor I have ever had, sometimes she looks like her neck is broken when she lectures...She also will throw in an awkward laugh every now and again. There is a lot of work in the class but it is extrememly easy. If you know basic concepts and can connect them to others, you should get no lower than a B+.
this professor is one of the most awkward professors i've ever had. the papers are not that hard, only 2 major papers. her tests are hard but you're allowed a notecard. should get no lower then a B.
Her assignments are a joke. Her test are extremely hard along with the papers. Its impossible to get an a on a paper. Her test are all free response and essay. The final was impossible. There is 50 pages to read a night. Her class is so boring and attendance is mandatory. Worst teacher ever. Do not take her
She is sooo easy... I don't know how you could get below a C in this class. Attendance is only 5% of your grade (not mandatory).. It's really easy to get Bs on both her tests and papers. The final was soo easy and you get to bring notecards to all of the exams. She is extremely boring in lectures, but it is easy to do well in this class if you try
She is a really good teacher and knows her stuff. She posts her powerpoints online and lets you use a note card during tests. She is really nice and helps you out when writing the two papers for the class. She is easy to understand and the tests aren't hard. She was a great teacher and I am glad I took her.
She is very awkward but nice. her lectures are posted online and she has review sessions before each test. She allows a note card on the test. I got an A on all tests except the cumulative final. She grades papers really hard but will look at them in advance and give feedback. I ended with a B+ and never read the textbook.
Honestly she is boring. I had to start bringing my laptop to class to keep me awake. However, she does know her stuff. Her test are bit hard. Know your geography. The journals are a joke. Just find some books and use wikipedia.
The material is interesting, as it should be: it's the world. She is quite a character herself and very good at explaining things.
Some days are terribly boring, others are pretty interesting. She has some weird antics that you will never get over. Tests are pretty easy, just study. Essays are alright. I would recommend her only if you needed to.
This is absolutely the worst class I've ever had to take here. Class is incredibly boring. Readings are absurdly long. She is the weirdest human being I've ever come across. I hated this class with every fiber of my being.
Do not take! She made me regret the fact that I am a history major!
She grades way too hard. You basically have to write your papers with so much detail and explanation that it just ruins the paper. The tests are easier than the papers. She has a TA, who grades just as hard and isn't any help that's for sure. This class is so boring! Do not take this class!!!!
Absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. You can put so much time and effort into either studying for a test or writing a paper but the truth is don't waste your time. Hardest grader for both tests and papers. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! also makes weird noises while teaching.
I' ve enjoyed her lectures and she is very helpful outside of class. She grades pretty hard on papers, but she is always willing to go over your drafts before you submit. Exams are easy and mostly based off of the lectures. Great teacher, and I'm glad that I took her class.
Worst teacher ever. Snorts quite often and grades way too hard. Take another teacher.
Worst Teacher Ever. If you miss even one class, you might as well not even bother, the stuff she says aloud is what she considers most important even though she later puts up slideshows. She snorts throughout teaching, really annoying. Impossible paper grader, never good enough. Tests require LOTS of studying, you get a notecard though- type it!
Dr. Sandman is really passionate about history, but the class is really dull. There's 3 papers, a midterm & a final, all of which are fairly difficult. She covers a lot in class, so if you miss, you're kind of screwed. The textbooks are pointless, don't waste your money. Try to avoid her if you can.
Don't bother buying the books. All exams are from the lectures only and you only need one of the books twice during the semester, so you can just borrow it and be fine. She's obviously interested in what she teaches and communicates well, although she does do the snorting thing. She's also a rather hard grader on the exams and papers, so watch out.
Even though there are 3 books, you barely use them. They make great resources for her essays and good study tools, so buy them even if you don't read them. Every class is a PP lecture, so stay awake! Take good notes, or as good as you can with a PP lecture, and you'll be OK. A lot on the tests come from the notes.
She teaches through powerpoint lectures which are easy enough to follow; what she says aloud with each slide is almost more important though, so make sure you really take notes. She is not too tough a grader. She doesn't even make you do a thesis for essays, you can just outline them. I don't know why others are complaining...
She is very quirky, but an easy enough grader.
She is quite quirky and has an interesting laugh, but she is a pretty easy grader. Only thing I hate about the class is the enormous about of reading and the fact that the TA grades half of the exams, papers, etc. I hate how the TA grades, but Sandman is a sweet lady.
She is a really sweet, yes quirky teacher, but she will go out of her way to help with the two essays you have to write. You're allowed a notecard for tests. Just take notes on the slideshows, listen to the lectures and do the readings and the class will be enjoyable!
Very quirky teacher, and it takes a conscious effort to pay attention during class. Bu you are allowed to use a note card with what ever you want on it on the tests, and she will help you with anything you need on your essays. Easy grader, lots of pop reading quizzes though.
Pretty tough for a Gen-ed. Expect a lot of reading and pop quizes are very frequent. Expect to come to class even though it isn't mandatory, you will miss a ton if you don't go to class. Her lectures are so packed with information that it can be a bit overwhelming. Tests aren't too hard. Chose another teacher, they're a lot easier than her.
Love history got a 5 in both US and Euro AP and have a B+ in this class. class is relatively easy however she is a hard grader on written assessments. English teacher
nice lady but very weird voice/laugh. kind of hard to pay attention but you need to take notes on the powerpoints as well as what she says. lots of reading but no pop quizes. you can make a notecard for all of the tests and the final, there are 2 essays and 3 mini essays. not that hard of a class but paying attention and studying is necessary
nice lady but very weird voice/laugh. kind of hard to pay attention but you need to take notes on the powerpoints as well as what she says. lots of reading, no pop quizes. you can make a notecard for all of the tests&the final. 3 exams, 2 essays, 3 mini essays. if she has a TA, the TA will grade exams so watch out for that
I didnt do any of the readings, and barely payed attention in class but still got a B. All tests had review guides and you get to use a note card. 3 Short mini essays, and 2 primary source essays. The class wasnt too bad, she really is a nice person no matter how weird she is.
Basically guaranteed a passing grade which is nice because her lectures consist almost entirely of maps and a few highlights of history. seriously, the woman loves her maps. not a bad prof
Lectures are boring and mostly pointless, but they're a good overview for the readings. Reading the textbook is key to success on the exams. 3 exams, a couple short papers, but nothing too bad. Going to her office hours for help with papers guarantees you a good grade. Overall, not too difficult. Her voice is sleep-inducing though so watch out.
Prof. Sandman is a really nice professor. Her lectures are long and often boring but if you take good notes you should do fine on the 2 tests. There are 3 short papers, 1 medium size paper (3-4 pages), and the final exam. You get points for attending class. No quizzes. Tests are very easy if you take good notes.
Dr. Sandman is nice, however makes directions very confusing so that basically she can grade however she chooses. This is my easiest class, yet I will get a B because getting an A with her is nearly impossible. Pretty strict grader wants "details" but doesn't explain how/what she wants.
Dr. Sandman was a good professor. Her lectures are all over the place and confusing at times. She requires you to read several books but you can get away with not doing much of the reading. She is really willing to help her students in any way possible. One of the most approachable professors I have ever had. Take her class.
Sandman is really nice! Grades very fairly and is always willing to help outside of class. She even let me revise a paper way after the due date before taking off points for something I could fix. Lectures are a little all over the place but you'll get through it. Definitely take her if you need an IdLS credit!
I took her for history 101 as a gen ed. She is a really nice lady, but her lectures are SO boring. If you don't find ancient mesopotamia the most interesting thing ever you probably won't be able to stay awake. the tests are mostly just writing essays and she doesn't grade them that harshly. she also gives extra credit if you miss class.
This class is boring but it's pretty easy. She cares about her students a lot and will help you. She's little crazy and laughs at her own jokes a lot but she's a solid choice.
By far one of my favorite JMU professors. She is an excellent educator and encourages critical thinking. Funny (not always intentionally :)) and a little zany. Ive had multiple classes with her and I feel like she has taught me a lot. I enjoy learning from her.
Prof is a very sweet lady and very willing to help. She offered extensions on all papers. Class consisted of 1 paper and 3 exams. Very boring lecturer. Very helpful to use book. Did not do readings and still did great.
My history 150 class with Dr. Sandman has been awesome. It is unlike any other history class I've taken before. You definitely need to put time into this class because the whole class is playing a game. Before each game starts she will have to lecture to give everyone background information. These lectures are boring but necessary.
Dr. Sandman's class was very interesting and taught in a unique way I really enjoyed. the semester was split into 2 topics and there were 2 papers for each half in addition to the 2 final papers. She is a very sweet lady who enjoys what she does and really knows what she is talking about. Pretty easy class overall.
Professor Sandman is a very nice woman. She made class engaging by making the class "simulations/games" as opposed to traditional lectures. She gives good feedback on the papers you turn in. I would recommend taking her for HIST150.
Great gal 100%. Super understanding with COVID and all the complications that come with online learning. Super flexible with deadlines and a pretty easy grader as long as you're not a braindead writer and know what you're talking about. Just do the reading and talk in class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Sandman is amazing human being. People do not give her enough credit as they should. I personally enjoyed the Liberia roleplay model that was done towards the end of the semester.
Dr. Sandman brings to life class and this is one of the most interactive classes Ive ever taken if you want to engage as a student this is the class for you 10/10 would recommend.
I think this was an off semester for Dr. Sandman, but I feel like she actually did not teach at all this semester. She did not grade a single thing until the end of the semester. She also would not lecture, she would just ask if we had any questions about random things. Little effort was put into this class from the teacher, so just beware.
This is going to be your favorite class at jmu I guarantee it. The learning environment is fun and everything is based off a historically based simulation. As long as you engage it will be the best class in history 150.
She is a very nice lady what truly wants everyone to do well in her class. The class is kind of like an acting class but its not hard at all. We just write papers but like 3 papers a semester. No midterms, finals, test, quizzes. Its not bad at all, highly recommend.
Very nice lady. Her class is a little confusing and you have to pay attention to do well. Relatively easy grader
The class is broken up into two simulations and you spend a month acting out historical events it requires writing papers and giving speeches, but she grades very fairly and is an easy and fun class if you don't mind doing a little bit of research.
LOVED professor Sandman! Attendence not required but you should go during simulations. She grades easy and is very understanding. So sweet and I would totally take her again.
Dr. Sandman is the best and has the best way of teaching class! It does take acting levels of some sort and an imagination. However, once you get into it, it becomes really fun and easy, attendance is mandatory, but she is very understanding.
Three essays were the only things that were graded, as long as you can write 3 decent essays you will pass.
While there was no big textbook, there were a few books we consulted for class. I liked her idea of reading chapters and then writing phrases, words, or ideas on the board to go over and she was really good about connecting them back together. She knew her material. Her assignments are also very creative in my opinion so I enjoyed that a bunch.
Dr. Sandman's class is a little odd because you have to act out historical events. I was unsure about it, but it is easier and better than just sitting in a lecture. She is nice and would read my papers and give feedback before I turned them in.
class is optional. All you have to do is write 3 essays decently and you will get a good grade. No quizzes or tests. Sweetest lady who cares about her students. Easy gen ed. Take this class
her class is a little weird, you have to participate in simulations but they are easy and fun when the class gets into it. 3 papers that she grades easily. definitely recommend as a gen ed.
This class was such a nice break as a STEM major who loves history. Only 3 medium papers (one is optional) and a final paper. You dont need to do any of the reading. 3 simulations that were pretty fun. I only went to class on simulation days and had a 95 before my final paper. Highly recommend
I am currently in this class and its my favorite class. Sandman is so smart and knows so much about the topics we are learning. We play a simulation in class which is very fun. There is a 2 papers, but very short. Main grade is participation, but her class is so interesting its easy to talk in. I love her so much, she is so cute and funny.
I am currently taking this class and she is GREAT! She is very knowledgeable in both her content and about the administration. She will take time to explain content, as well as take the time to talk to you concerning your worries about degree programs. She's very honest and she genuinely wants you to succeed, whether in education or not. Take her.
Sandman is knowledgeable and approachable. Easy course overall, the only real grades are three essays & participation/attendance. Dr. Sandman can murmur & lecture too long though. She often takes a five minute reminder and turns it into an hour of fluff. Overall, depends on personal preference. Show up to class every day for an edge.
Dr. Sandman is very knowledgeable about history and the program I am in. She is always able to bring everything back around to the topic, it just sometimes takes longer and more paths than other times (that is not fully to be blamed on her). I would take Dr. Sandman for anything.
Don't take this class if you are shy. I really enjoyed it, but it was roleplaying and action based in the class.
This class was primarily discussion based, and Dr. Sandman did a wonderful job leading discussions into interesting and unknown areas that really make you think. You can get away with not doing all of the discussion board posts so long as you score well on the essays - which isn't too hard. It's an easy class but a thought-provoking one.
Do not take this class if you have any ambition beyond being a teacher. If you want to learn something useful about maps go to the geography department instead. Textbooks were useless after week 3. The simulation was a pain and I'm left unsure why we did it. The midterm and final are lesson plans and completely busy work. She doesn't grade fast.
Get ready for a different way of learning! This class is based on simulations of historical events, so if you're shy or won't participate, don't take this class. Dr. Sandman was really great at understanding people's comfort levels and communication during simulations. She is a good grader and gives great feedback too. Would def take again!
Dr. Sandman is very understanding and is willing to give extra time on essays. If you participate in class and ask questions, she will likely work things out with you. She is straight forward with grading rubrics and deadlines.
Sandman is very understanding and such a fair grader. For 333, its a class discussion which feels a little repeative at times but Sandman is so knowldegable that it works out. You spend over a month doing a simulaiton which is very fun. Theres a paper mid term and final but it is very do able. Overall great class!
