The class really is not that fun, sad to say but it's a pretty much useless class. Although most other comm core classes are useless too. She looks good though!
She's very passionate about what she is teaching which sometimes comes off in a negative way but her lectures are always interesting and the reading makes sense. But it is a feminist class so you have to realize her position to understand where she is coming from.
Trope tends to rely on Powerpoint to teach course material. Sometimes this lends itself to boring lectures. In this class you choose a topic for a project that you work on the entire semester. She is somewhat helpful in office hours. Recommend this if you like to be creative. Love that it is a smaller class.
I wouldn't recommend you to take this class if you hate theories. The readings are interesting but the lectures, not so. I very often think I benefit more from reading than from lectures --- it gets really boring at times.
This class was not interesting at all. Her paper prompts are extremely confusing and convoluted. The lectures are not helpful at all because all she does is ask questions about the concept without providing real information about the concept. Its hard to study for the midterm when you look at your notes and see you never learned about the topics.
Such a disorganized teacher, her lectures are boring and her essay prompts are unclear. She made such an interesting topic utterly unbearable. She grades papers so hard and her grading rubic does not match the prompt she gave us. Unrealistic expectations, do yourself a favor and avoid her at all costs, students from other classes detest her too.
She is super cool. We watched a bunch of cool video/movies in class.
NOPE. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. If you like long boring lectures, tons of reading assignments you don't understand a thing about, and philosophy, confusing writing assignments, do so, but all students consider her class as something to be avoided. Her TAs are much more helpful than her. NEVER take this class.
Trope takes roll and classes are soooooo boring and slow. She sucks at lecturing and her slides are all text. The TAs don't grade easy and there is a lot of reading!!!!
She is boring and an ineffective lecturer. Teacher assistants were tough graders. Lots of reading. She takes roll so you have to go to lecture.
Personally, I think Professor Trope was a great teacher, especially for her Communication and Culture class. She is very well-versed in all sorts of popular culture, and she had a full understanding of what she was teaching. Her lectures might have been long, but the material she taught was very interesting. I didn't think she was boring at all.
I wonder how someone could teach such interesting materials so terribly. She makes very interesting topics so boring. The midterm wasn't that bad, but here are three confusing writing assignments. Long sentence short, don't take this class.
The material is supposed to be interesting, but her teaching style makes you hate the lectures.
Her lectures can get pretty confusing sometimes because she tends to give a lot of examples that you may not completely understand right away but the discussion sections help clarify a lot of the material. She is very knowledgeable about the subject and talks about a lot of relevant examples that made class interesting. Only 1 midterm and 3 papers.
Trope is nice, but words cannot express how dull this class was. Many comm classes try to make COMMON SENSE academic, but this was the worst offender to date. I'd say the professor is passionate about what she does but nobody else is and it makes the class unbearable to sit through. Literally wrote papers about Instagram and hashtags. Don't take it
Trope is really funny and smart. She has a dry sense of humor so I get why some students wouldn't get it. If you are against reading, thinking, and being creative don't take this class. If you came to college to be educated and develop a deeper understanding of the world-- aka, not be an ignorant person-- this class is for you.
Really cares a lot about what is going on at USC. Knows a lot about theories and is good at making them matter. A very thought provoking class. Hard to consume pop culture after!
Midterm & 3 papers. Grading depends on TA. I had Raffi, he was okay but not spectacular. Would ask for guidance on papers and he was very vague. Unclear of grading criteria or what was expected in papers, unclear as to what I needed to do to improve. I loved Trope, she was an awesome teacher and I learned a lot. Concepts can be tough to grasp.
Great class! Really makes you really think about the fashion industry in an everyday way that you may not have before. Alison is super light-hearted and real. You don't really have to do the readings, except for papers or blogs.
She is a great professor and knowledgeable on the subject. Opens the class up for discussion often, which is very helpful for understanding the readings. Lots of readings, but skimming is okay as she covers a lot of the topics in class. Really cares about students. Very helpful in office hours. Good sense of humor. 3 tests, 1, 10-pg term paper
Professor Trope is very insightful and likes to use a lot of media in her lectures. The nature of this class didn't allow for me to assess how hard she grades, but, at times, her lectures did feel a bit boring. She asks a lot of question and requires participation.
If I were you I'd taking something else
This is a class that is thought-provoking every lecture because 1) she knows her material and is a great speaker, and 2) the students' perspectives are always interesting and inspiring to listen from. Papers have a lot of freedom in choosing what to write about. Clear instructions and should be easy to tackle as long as you don't procrastinate.
AMAZING. Literally had class once at Moreton Fig. 10/10 would recommend COMM 465
She's kinda bland during her lectures and drills basic concepts into our heads. She explains common sense things in way more complex manners than they need to be.
ASCJ 200 seemed like a pointless class she explained terms like memes and selfies in much more complicated terms than necessary and it felt like a dumbed down version of JOUR 201, which journalism majors had to take before this course. Can't tell if this is her fault or if the class is just poorly constructed.
Professor Trope is the best professor in Annenberg. She is incredibly smart and articulate, as well as witty and kind. I have taken 4 courses with her while in Annenberg (200, 206, 396, 366), and each one has been life-changing; she is a huge mentor for me. Don't hesitate to take her.
One of the best and most memorable classes I've taken. The course, assignments and discussions are actually interesting and engaging and Prof Trope makes sure that we're doing real work/talking about real things that have real impacts. 10/10 was a huge part of making my usc experience what it was.
There is nothing wrong with Prof Trope specifically, BUT ASCJ 200 is the stupidest class in all of USC Annenberg. I leaned absolutely nothing and the TA's are so entitled and grade extremely difficultly. Otherwise, Prof Trope gives mediocre lectures but like I said nothing special and I learned literally nothing. most pointless class ever.
Prof. Trope is a good prof & her lectures are interesting. That being said, the class itself is fine at best. Strong disconnect between lecture & lab sections and your entire grade is based on your TA and their opinion. Huge lectures and pop quizzes so you always have to go. Lecture material is fine but long at times and lots of reading assignments
Alison is a great professor, and her lectures are pretty interesting. She focuses a lot on media literacy in terms of pop culture, such as memes or social media interactions. Pop quizzes every so often for attendance, but grades are determined by lab professors. Three articles and three projects that use Adobe programs. I really enjoyed this class!
Alison Trope is a cool professor! She likes for lectures to be conversational, so don't take this class if you don't like to speak up during lecture.
Professor Trope has been one of the most caring professors I've had at USC. Especially during COVID-19, she always checks in on her students' mental health and is extremely accommodating and understanding/empathetic. If you're looking for a professor who truly cares about your well-being and academic success, then definitely take a class with her
Professor Trope was a life-saver during COVID. Instead of assigning more work like a lot of professors, she extended almost every deadline and checked in on students. Really sweet and cares about what she's teaching.
Professor Trope is truly one of the most kindhearted teacher's I've ever had. This class consisted of 1 individual paper, 3 group papers, and 1 group presentation. Each issue we wrote about was incredibly important and something that my group and I are extremely passionate about. I couldn't recommend Professor Trope more! You won't regret it!
Run. Choose another major class plz. She is a wonderful prof but honestly her class structure is super unclear and even the TA said that he doesn't know what the professor is talking about. I ask many friends who took this class and most of them barely understand the class. It's our midterm tomorrow hhh
Dr Trope is awesome. She selects content meant to challenge our perception of culture that gets extremely thought provoking so youll absolutely get your monies worth. HOWEVER- if you take this course, prepare for your perception and consumption of media to be completely changed. Theres a ton of reading but no assigned book.
She is a caring person in addition to being inspiring. I expected her lectures every week.
Dr Trope is awesome. The class is essentially a DIY activism workshop with 1 individual paper and what seems like a never ending series of group assignments. Its manageable for a stacked 16 semester and I even took her COMM 206 course at the same time. Im certain everyone giving her a bad rep in the reviews doesnt speak in discussion or lecture.
Professor Trope challenges you to think about the way popular culture functions. While the essay prompts can be tough sometimes, she is very understanding. Be ready to consume the readings of a lot of dense communication theorists.
I genuinely look forward to this class. I would recommend going in person every time because the in class discussions are super helpful and essentially drive the course of the class. The beginning is a little slow and is all about theory but it picks up and is totally worth it! Prof. Trope is also very very understanding and flexible.
Best prof I have ever had. So easy to be intrigued by her lectures despite how boring they sound/them being mainly about Marx? That was really unexpected and kinda annoying but she still made it the most interesting class of my semester. If you want a relationship with her, go to class&take handwritten notes. 3 essays + midterm (in-class essay)
One of the nicest professors I've ever had. She's extremely supportive and cares so much about her students. There's lots of reading but she took feedback from the class and reduced the amount by quite a bit later in the semester. Class consists 3 essays with 1 midterm and grading depends on the TA, but they generally aren't too bad.
Professor Trope is incredibly understanding, current with the times, and willing to let class discussions go in unconventional, eye-opening directions. The essay prompts are difficult, often involving drawing relationships between different readings. Starts off with dense, mind-boggling theory and becomes more exploratory, open, and recent. Icon.
Dr Trope is head of the undergrad comm program and needless to say she takes her job very seriously. However, she is such an awesome instructor who is so passionate of culture and stakeholdership in civic society that this course is never dull. If you are a comm major I highly recommend taking as many classes with her as possible!
Took this class in the fall and absolutely loved it. Professor Trope is so insightful and eloquent, I genuinely feel like I learned something new and fascinating in every single lecture. She extended almost every single deadline and checked in with students as to how they were feeling often, showing she really cared. Absolutely take her!
Took this elective because I loved COMM 206 so much and it provided a wealth of insights into the fashion industry's inner workings and our relationship to it. You go extremely in-depth and the assignments struck a really good balance between being analytical and creative. Trope is just super knowledgeable and cares a lot about her students!
love her
We had great conversations in the class (the lectures are more discussion based, so if you feel better about speaking up, it may be an environment you feel more comfortable in), and the professor and the TAs are excellent. While there is reading, it's all well-selected content!
I looked forward to going to her classes every week. Had amazing lectures and explained materials in an engaging way. Encouraged students to really understand the concepts within communication theories. Class topics were interesting and papers were graded pretty easily. An amazing class to take! Going to miss this class!
my fav class and professor at usc Annenberg! lectures are so inspirational and Professor Trope is really caring. Grading is not too hard too. Love the class material! Would take her again
Best professor ever!!!! So engaging, made me actually want to participate! Also, just super interesting content if you like pop culture. The two papers, midterm & project were super creative and easy. So sweet, made an effort to know everyone's names in a class of 80! As long as you meet with your TA before stuff is due, you should be good :)
One of my favorite professors ever. She clearly cares a lot about her students, and even though she teaches a lot of big lectures she will remember your name if you participate. The lectures almost always turn into discussions, which I loved. The course content is very interesting and feels like a mix of longstanding theory and current issues.
Prof Trope is very nice and has good lectures. The Lectures can be boring but overall they are interesting and she is a good professor. The class has a ton of readings which you kind of have to do, but overall she is a good professor and I would def take a class of hers again
literally love prof trope! learned so much through her and the guest speakers she brought in about the process of creating a media campaign directed at social change. she creates for an inclusive environment and really listens and cares about her students! your grade is very dependent on your TA but if there are any issues, she will accommodate!
Class is based on just a group project. 2 TAs graded, Prof Trope gave lectures but mostly brought in guest speakers. Grading was super confusing, you don't know your grade til the end of the semester - there's only 2 assignments. Your success in this class definitely depends on the group you are randomly assigned. Prof felt condescending at times.
Professor Trope is one of my favorite professors at USC. Her classes aren't an easy A BUT that doesn't mean you can't do well in her class. If you put in the effort, you will do fine. Her classes are heavy in reading but the readings are actually interesting. I enjoy her class because she is very understanding and accommodating with the students.
I love Prof Trope's classes because I feel like I actually learn from them. For COMM 396, we barely had any homework except for some posts and papers. You can tell that Prof Trope truly cares about her students which I really appreciate. She is willing to give extensions, cancel assignments if needed, and ensure her students are not overwhelmed.
Professor Trope is a gem and cares about what she is teaching. Class discussions are engaging, and TAs are fantastic. There is a lot of takeaway from this class, and she does a great job of applying course concepts to real-life examples/representations in the media. Respect!
take her class. did not do a single reading but i finished with an A-. genuinely looked forward to her class every time.
no respect for students. only care about the TA. never follow the grading criteria. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Such a waste of ur tuition.
This class was not worth taking. There's so much reading that most of the class couldn't or just gave up on trying to be up to date. I barely went to class because it was a waste of time to show up to
There were a lot of readings in this class that were hard to keep up with, although I did skip quite a few of them (as did most people) and was able to get a B+. There are a few essays that were graded somewhat difficult, however I always got really good feedback. The discussions in this class were also very interesting; overall kind of enjoyed.
Most lectures she starts waxing high and lofty philosophical ideas and sentiments, becomes difficult to remain engaged. An auditorium full of students but only 10 contribute to class discussions. Walked away having learned nothing. Participation (10%) Reading Quiz (5%) Wordpress Site (5%) DIY Assignments (35%) Written Posts (25%) Final Exam (20%)
Annenberg classes can be a whole lot of nothing, but I never found that to be the case during Alison's lectures. She's compassionate and has a clear understanding of what she teaches and of her responsibility as an educator. I truly believe that her negative reviews stem from students' shock that she has expectations, unlike most Annenberg faculty.
This class is honestly a big waste of time. Lecture are boring and irrelevant to your project (which is your entire grade). If you don't show up to class she will hunt you down. If you don't want a midterm/ exam then take this, but so boring.
Professor Trope is very helpful and thoughtful regarding all her students. She wants to engage in conversation with her students in class and outside of class and the class always covered interesting content. Her lectures can get repetitive at points in their content and style, making them feel longer. Her assignments are also all fair.
super kind professor that wants all her students to do well with interesting lectures. however, she can tend to be a bit repetitive and consistently engages with the same few students- so lecture could get boring and seem longer. however, assignments were fair and totally doable.
COMM 396 is a super fun GE if you are interested in fashion and how it impacts the world. This was definitely one of my fav classes at SC. Dr. Trope designed a super engaging multi-media class and brought in great guest speakers. It's worth it to come to lectures. The projects were super fun, thought-provoking, and allowed you to be creative.
She makes genuinely engaging classes that you can learn a lot from. She is very caring, and participation isn't necessary. It isn't a demanding class as it is graded off of a few papers and the rubric and assignments are very clear as to what is expected from you. I would 100% take this class again
Took this class because I thought Fashion would be a nice and interesting break from the rest of my classes. Wrong. TA grades so harshly and for what. 4 papers and a video essay. Tons of readings assigned. Just feels like way too much for a GE that sounds like it might be enjoyable. Lectures feel hours long. Was not a fan.
Not worth.
This has been my third class with Trope, I find her teaching style to be very effective and engaging. She truly cares about her students and creates a welcoming, inclusive environment. Her grading is perhaps a little tough when it comes to papers, but her feedback is helpful and she pushes you to be a better writer. Take her classes!
Professor Trope is such a sweetheart! She is so caring, kind, and a really engaging lecturer. However, I was not a fan of the TAs in this class, they were extremely nit-picky graders...
Alison is a super insightful professor who gives organized lectures. Many 3 page essays that are graded somewhat toughly, but TAs as well as Alison are all accessible. Overall it is a very helpful class that gives a well-rounded understanding about the Fashion industry through the lens of cultural studies.
boring class and dense theoretically, but the professor isnt bad. not a difficult class to take to get your requirements in.
Kindest professor ever! She's so sweet and I'm always amazed by how quickly she remembers all the students' names. I also loved the readings she assigned to us, there's so much depth to it.
Professor Trope is the kindest and most empathetic professor I've met at USC. She cares deeply about her students, the content she teaches, and current events. I appreciate her critical approach to media.
Professor Trope's grating voice is difficult to listen to. She can also be passive-aggressive at times. Not conducive to a great learning environment, but the content of the course itself is rather interesting.
I intially took this course because I thought a GE about fashion would be cool, but I was quick to find it wasn't so much. Prof Trope is nice but can be a bit at times, and her TAs grade a little harshly. However, if you are a decent writer, it shouldn't be hard to get a good grade. Attendance is mandatory, and she doesn't allow laptops now :/
I wouldn't take this class again 100%. Took it thinking it'd be interesting, but ended up bored out of my mind by the long lectures that don't correlate with your papers. Had to write 4 essays and a video essay; graded very harshly by the TAs for no reason. It's just a fashion class, it's not supposed to be that serious. Save yourself and your GPA
This class felt more like a reading course, and I didn't feel I learned much beyond the readings. Allison is a kind professor who truly wants her students to succeed. However, the assignments were very vague and multi-step. I wouldn't recommend having Kristen Crowe as your TA. The class was fine, but it doesn't really push you.
