Shes just there because she has to be. No interest in teaching you, it seemed like she was flaunting what she knows. Shes a nice person, but not the best teacher.
Alissa is an amazing teacher! She Cares about her students and is very helpful as well as clear as to what she wants / expect. If you are stuck on a certain aspect of the material she will clarify it in a breeze. She marks very fair and doesn't pick favorites. If you put in the time and effort a good mark is garanteed! It is evident that Alissa kno
Alissa is the best teacher ever! she really cares about her students and wants them to succeed!
Great teacher, very clear. My favorite class to attend, great assignments, great exams, good marker, interesting classes. highly recommended.
Mostly from the text. Didn't allow discussion that went against her personal opinions. Tried to push her ideals. Easy.
Hands down, best proff i had this year. she allows for class discussions, WHETHER ITS HER VIEW OR NOT. makes everyone feel comfortable to voice their opinions, and is easy 2 approach if help is needed. Her exams are fair, & for anyone who takes her class & attends regularly will sometimes be rewarded by giving you bonus questions asked on exams
Pretty open to class discussions, but you might notice that she doesn't always appreciate opposing viewpoints. Overall, not a bad instructor.
she is a fantastic teacher, very helpfull and taking this class helped me raise my GPA alot. cant wait to take her next semester for another socio class. read your text and her powerpoint notes and keep yourself updated before everyclass and you will do wonders.
I took this class by chance, and I loved it! She made the class feel like they had something to contribute. I found that she did accept and work through other views/opinions, which was nice. You need to be in class and do the readings to stay on top of it. I dislike the pop-quizzes as sometimes I just didn't have the time to read the chapter.
I'm really glad to be in her class. She is very clear in her notes & her expectations. You can tell she is very knowledgeable & that she cares about her students. Her quizzes & midterms are a piece of cake if you keep up in class & read your notes.. definite GPA booster. Plus, her final is not cumulative. I'd recommend her to anyone!
Took this class as an option not expecting much and was totally surprised. Alissa was a great prof. Easy to understand, realistic expectations and great overall experience. I would take another class from her for sure!
She is lively, and keeps the topics interesting in our class. I really like her structured organized notes, and the way she teaches through them. She is an excellent teacher!!
Not impressed paid 700 for her to be fixated on if someone was touching their cell phone ... Even threatened to take one away.. Had a guest speaker that had no boundaries and when this was addressed she had some ridiculous argument that it was her experience... Not recommended
Pretty hard marker at times... Gives "random" pop quizes that are based off text book info. teaches her opinion, and only had 2 classes that involved the students well. overall didnt care for the class/instructor..
Honestly one of the best prof i've had really clear and perfect notes..Can't go wrong
Good prof, interesting notes and never a dull class. i would recommend taking her class but make sure you understand how she exactly marks because alot of people complained about her marking
She was a pretty awesome prof. This was my first year of university and her class was not too difficult. My only issue with her was sometimes someone would put forward a very valid point that didn't line up with her own and she would shoot them down. Other than that, awesome!
Great Prof! Her tests are easy if you study your notes, so it's a good idea to attend each class. She allows for class debate/discussion and has relevant/interesting examples. Always on time and is very clear in her expectations. I would definetly take another course from her!
Overall a great prof.. I really enjoyed her class. She gave us a final research paper instead of a final exam which was great, and her tests were fairly straight forward as long as you put the time into reading the textbook and going over class notes.
Fairly straightforward teacher. You must study the textbook and her notes as well as movies very thoroughly for the exams. Very picky marker on the exams.
Extremely knowledgeable (has a Soc PhD) and willing to help. In the 3hr condensed course- although attendance wasn't mandatory, missing one day would have been a LOT of material. Read questions carefully and answer them THOROUGHLY (paragraphs) - very picky on marking. Was not an easy A. Test content from text, lectures, videos. Tricky true/false.
Great Prof!! A little picky when he comes to marking exams, but all in all a really nice prof who makes sociology interesting and brings humour to her lectures. Definitely Would Recommend!!!!
She is a really good prof, she is clear and organized. The only unfortunate thing is that there are 4 pop quizzes throughout the semester, BUT they are really easy if you read the textbook and can increase your mark A LOT. Exams are tough, study the statistics she gives to you in class and read every word of the chapters and you will be fine.
Alyssa is a good teacher but she didn't really motivate me a great deal. I got my A but didn't learn very much.
She is a proff who uses pop quizzes to ensure you read the text which i found was just annoying. she is a picky marker but over all a okay proff
GREAT & FANTASTIC. AMAZING PROF. 100% RECOMMEND HER
Good teacher, organized and helpful. Tests were from notes directly.
Good prof! Classes were interesting, big on discussion and tests were easy. She has pop quizzes which boost your mark if you just memorize some definitions before class. Exams are mostly lecture and only asks questions about key words from the text. Highly recommend for a GPA booster.
Make sure you read the text because she will quiz you on it randomly. Very helpful and clear. Only complaint is she's not very accepting of conflicting views, if you present a good point but one that conflicts with hers or the one she expects it will not be received well. The amount of discussions in the class is GREAT.
she really knows her stuff!
Best prof ever!
She did a really good job of providing information in an unbiased manor. I thought she was really nice and would reccommend her. Just read her notes and you can easily do well
She's straightforward and to the point. Her exams are fair and cover the textbook, the powerpoints, and things she says in class. You can get an easy A if you put in the effort, but don't think you can just slide by because it's sociology.
Great Prof. Smart. Kind. Engaging. Awesome slides. She deserves higher than 4.1 rating. Deserves at lease 4.6 rating. Will take her class in future. She is clearly a non-supporter of the Harper government and has some left wing views she cites in class as fact. Only concern was her political transparency which had no place in a university.
Alissa is such an amazing prof!! As long as you keep up with your readings, and study her notes, you'll do great!
Amazing class, and an amazing professor! So fair, so knowledgable, so cool! I would highly recommend to take this class!
Alissa is the best prof you will ever come across! So helpful, so fair. Don't be lazy and you will do fine in this class. My favourite prof by far!
A great prof. She is very clear and straight forward and also very helpful. if you study her notes really well and read the textbook you will do good in her exams. her exams are very fair. she is really nice too.
She is a great prof! speak clearly and also answer questions (in or out the class). she is very helpful and have a lot of examples to connect with her topic. the exams are fair. IF YOU READ BOTH TEXT BOOK N HER SLIDEs, the exams could be easy!! I have rough 3 weeks because I took 2 class...but both of them were great!!!
A very nice lady and a decent teacher but soo boring, the classes are as boring as it gets its just reading the slides
A wonderful prof! Super clear, tells you exactly what to expect for exams. I studied her notes only (not the textbook) and did really well in her class, so GO TO CLASS and take notes. She is approachable, friendly and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
Posts blank ppt slides online so you have to go to class to fill them in. Doesnt allow cell phones in class and will kick you out if she catches you. If you go to class and review her slides the midterms are a breeze. However if you miss class you are going to do badly.
Awful teacher. All she does is stand behind her computer and read powerpoint slides word for word, then gives the hardest tests; my C- class average sums it up. It baffles me that she has a 4.2 rating because she does not deserve that. She completely turned me off of sociology. If you have her do yourself a favour and get out of her class.
Alissa is a wonderful prof! Unfortunately I could not attend some classes because of work, however by reading the text and her notes still ended with an A+. 100% recommended, textbook is mandatory.
Engaging professor who is always willing to help you succeed. She incorporates documentaries and guest lectures into the course which really helps bring the material to life. One of my favourite instructors!
The subject is really interesting. However, she makes it unbearable. the are four tests, each worth 15%. no assignments. This does NOT help when you are trying to study for many different exams. Avoid her if you can.
Great prof. Really relatable, very nice and understandable. Her tests are a bit hard, but they are straight forward and applicable to everything she lectures about. The text is necessary and you need to attend class to fill in all the proper notes. Great class. Well worth the time.
She has 4 "midterms" each worth 15%. The 4 midterms just did not work out, you just saw yourself ALWAYS studying for socio because of the constant exams. The midterms are all multiple choice yet on the final a large portion of it was written, so you didn't know what to expect from her. I wouldn't take another class with her again.
Alissa is an amazing prof and an even more amazing human being! By far one of the best Soci profs at MacEwan. She is so passionate about the subject and very willing to help her students. The majority of exams are based on lectures, so it's very easy to do well if you go to class. Textbooks are needed though because they are used for assignments.
This course was really tough but so worth it. I learned a lot.
I've had her for both of my sociology course and even though this was an online class the material she provided for the modules was helpful. She makes you use the text book. She's a great knowledgable prof. Definitely would take another class of hers
My queen. I would take 100 sociology classes with Alissa, she is fantastic. Provides very clear learning outcomes and is always there to help her students. Has a great sense of humour.
I had Alissa for both SOCI 101 and SOCI 271. In both classes, she was very clear in her lectures and would answer any questions to great extent. She made lectures really interesting by including ted talks, youtube videos and documentaries. I do anything to be in her class each semester, best prof I have had.
Alissa has been my favourite professor in my 4 years of university, and one of the reasons I switched to Sociology. She has great lectures and includes both theory and contemporary examples. She's very knowledgeable, so even though the course content wasn't an easy one, she made it really enjoyable. I would take her classes for the rest of my life!
Where to begin? This woman epitomizes eloquence. She marks on your participation. And she actually reads (and responds to) your work. Put it another way, she seems to care about being a good prof. I'm just sad I discovered her in my last year! If you have any interest in gender (or in hearing articulate speech), you need to take a class with her.
Is a horrible professor, if writing is not your strong suite stay clear because she will not provide any useful information to help you. Lectures are difficult to sit through and she mainly reads from her power points.
I took this class online and found it to be very well outlined and structured. She always provided quick feedback and it's clear that she has made improvements to this course as I only had one midterm and biweekly postings about the readings as well as mandatory comments on others posts. Read your textbook, made good notes and YOU WILL BE FINE!
It is a very interesting and easy course, so make sure you don't mess it up. She's very quick in replying to emails The material was concise and she is a relatively easy marker. Exams were easy and so were the quizzes, make sure you read the textbook though. On a whole, it was an amazing experience.
I am convinced she does not even read discussion posts she just gives a random grade. I have received a 2 on a terrible vague post and 1.5/2 on discussion posts I included a lot of detail and analysis in.
tough grader
Her classes were very interesting and very helpful to students. She is a tough grader and you will have to attend every class as she doesn't post her full notes on bb learn along with takes attendances for marks.
Hard to grade her effectively because I took an online course, but from our emails she seems quite nice and easy to talk to. Do not take as an online course, it was the worst experience I've had in a while.
Alissa is a great prof and this was an interesting course. She is a bit of a tough grader as the marks on my papers/reading assignments were the worst I have received.
She's amazing! She talks and writes a bit wordy but if you ever have any questions she's super willing to sit down with you and help you out. She cares a lot about students and makes everyone in the class feel welcome and important. I did NOT want to take another theory class but this one felt so relevant to real life I actually really enjoyed it
These sociological theory classes are pretty pointless (although she'll state her case to the contrary) but you could do worse. Felt a bit like a Philosophy class. There is no textbook, all readings are online. Three of these readings require written reflections. Yet another follower of the PowerPoint cult. Not a lot of class interaction. Meh.
I love Alissa! This has been my third class with her and I look forward to every lecture. They're so wise and insightful, and I find that I am constantly thinking about them even about the class or in the future. Alissa is the reason I decided to Major in Sociology and maybe even Master. I truly truly recommend her!
Alissa is a really good prof. She's approachable, kind, and well-knowledgeable in the field of sociology. She marks of participation so show up to class, and rather than having midterms, she had weekly quizzes that were fairly straightforward. I enjoyed going to her class because she throws in some humour to lighten up the subject at hand.
My favorite professor so far at university! Made me want to switch my major to sociology. She's a great listener and is very helpful. There is no midterm, just a weekly quiz on Friday worth 3 marks. If you attend the lectures it's very easy to get a good grade. Would recommend her to anyone. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
Alissa Overend is one of the best profs I have ever had. Knows her stuff, approachable, and classes are interesting! You have to work hard for your mark, which is fair and I think she is a reasonable marker. Take a class with Alissa she is fantastic!
This prof cares so much about her students, no midterm just a one question quiz that was easy if you read the textbook every week, overall enjoyable and easy! THIS PROF IS A GEM PLEASE TAKE HER, WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER
The sweetest, kindest, most inspirational person I have ever met. I can't explain how much Alissa has enlightened me into the real world and helped me in my personal life. I can't recommend enough taking Alissa, she's my absolute favourite Prof in all of MacEwan.
Probably the best professor I've ever had. Very respectful and helpful. Super interesting lectures. She definitely cares a lot about her students. If you pay attention in class it's very easy marks. She does mark on class participation though.
Shes a really great prof who is very passionate, her lectures are interesting and engaging
Alissa was a good prof in general but found that she was quite the hard marker. She basically read off the powerpoint all semester. People say you need the textbook but I never read mine once, and tests never had questions that were textbook specific. Attendance counts for marks. Personally wouldn't take her again.
The tests are harder than I was expecting because they expect you to remember a lot of information. The class has an attendance and participation mark, which is annoying. The few assignments are straightforward. Overall, the class is minimal work and the course material is really interesting. Dr. Overend really cares about what they are teaching.
Dr. Overend was a good professor. Didn't have much contact with her as the course was module-based and pretty straightforward. Had weekly quizzes, discussions, a paper and an open-book final exam. She was kind of a tough marker, but not too bad. Would take another class with her again.
Dr. Overend was an amazing and passionate professor. Three quizzes, one long take-home exam, and an essay. I would take her again but she has been a very nitpicky, tough grader, as well as inconsistent with her grading. She is accessible and always helpful when you need her. As much as I enjoyed her lectures, I would avoid her in the future.
Super nice prof but lacked guidance for assignments. Answers to questions were vague and tended to not help. Exams had questions to study for that were exactly like the exam but you had to find the answers yourself. Found marks taken off on exam for not expanding even tho the answer was what she had written verbatim in her slides
Dr. Overend was fantastic. As someone who enjoys online classes, this was a great course. The material was well organized and expectations were clear.
Great prof, always willing to help outside of class. She is very caring about students. If you don't like public speaking I wouldn't recommend, participation matters and there are presentations.
Overend highly favours class attendance, from class participation to slide decks that have barely any info on them this is a class you need to attend. She is a tough marker for exams which are long written answers where you can write exactly what she said in class and she will ask for more detail. When I emailed for help, she was condescending.
Dr. Overend was an excellent professor; she set her students up for success and was kind and approachable. The class was hybrid, so there was one 90-minute class session a week. Alissa would expand on the lecture slides she uploaded weekly, so class attendance was mandatory, as this information was often tested within our exams.
A wonderful professor and person - does well at explaining concepts. I found she was quite a hard marker and very particular about wording and language. Wants a lot of detail but the maximum length of some assignments don't allow for it. So be careful with written assignments. Participation was graded which was no big deal and fair enough.
I really enjoyed this class, I genuinely learned a lot, and the lectures are always engaging. She's willing to help when needed, but you have to put in the effort for assignments if you want to earn a good grade.
It was a hybrid class, so attendance was mandatory and worth marks, but very understanding professor and you can submit a 200 word summary of the chapter for the day you miss if you have to. Normally, weekly assignments are horrible, but in this class, they were fairly easy and really helped with overall grade. No final, but 2 midterms. Very kind.
Hybrid class, if you go to class, you'll do well. The professor was very understanding, knowledgeable and inspiring! You could submit a 200-word summary of the chapter for the day you missed if you had to. I had a super tough semester due to loss, and her class really inspired me to push through. Would recommend her,100% would take again.
