First of all, NOT hot, interesting lecturer though. Course was good except for the last exam. I don't think it had anything from his lectures on it.

read the whole chapter! great prof - funny and easy to follow. I could actually sit through 3 hours of him no problem (which is usually hard).

Funny man, simplifies the material. Make sure you read the chapters or you will be in trouble. Wakes me up at 8:30 in the morning.

Mapp is great. He is super funny. He loves his material and it shows. He brought a demo to almost every class. Super guy!

Mapp is a good prof. Very funny and knowledgable. BUT! Bio ppl take it as an elective. As a result, the exams are geared towards them, which makes it TOUGH & unfair for us poor psych majors! If you're a psych major, try for another 22/3200 level course.

he's a really funny guy and his lectures are clear and concise, which is a great thing since the book has all that bio mumbo jumbo crap!! his tests are fair...don't kill yourself trying to remember every little detail for the short answer questions

Mapp is a really great prof. He makes things that could be complex very simple for those without a background in science (thus prior comments about bio students are not warranted). If you want to learn something, take his class.

his tests aren't that hard. they are very fair. the problem is, he is not trying to fool you, so you may think some questions are more complex than they really are! he is very funny and makes things easy to understand.

Tough - yes, fair - yes, hot - oh yes! Mapp is seriously an awesome prof. If you want to learn something and be entertained at the same time, take a course by htis prof.

If you want an easy Stats course take Mapp's class. Mind you you have to do the work but his lectures are very clear and he uses PowerPoint presentations that you can get on the net afterwards. Overall good prof, approachable, and gives the class a relaxed atmosphere!

BEST stats prof ever. I am the furthest thing from a math student, Mapp helped me pass this course! He doesn't keep you long in lectures, gets to the point and gets you out of there. I HIGHLY recommend taking Mapp if you need to take Stats. Great guy and accomodating.

Best STATS teacher I could have ever of chosen. He explains things so they make sense, which is incredibly helpful. Has a wonderful sense of humour and just an all around amazing teacher. I would take any class he teaches.

I would definately recommend this prof. I am in his class right now, and I am actually UNDERSTANDING stats for once!! He is CLEAR, funny, and he undestands that Stats is a boring class, so he actually entertains the class while teaching. He puts up his Power Point slides on a website ahead of time so you can print it off, which helps soooo much!!!!

definitely take his class..its stats made simple. tests are easy. and he makes class quite intersting. Notes are posted online with step by step instructions. 2 assignments (10% each) which are pretty easy. Text he uses is awesome, very clear and concise.

very easy. the lecture notes are all online and right from the text. So there is no need to go to class as he reads right from the notes. I got an Aplus in his class. Definitely worth taking stats with this prof.

Best stats. prof.! Can explain concepts clearly and within an hour -- no matter how difficut the topic. His exams are good, but be prepared for the MC, as it tends to be a bit trickier. His TA, Julie, was really helpful too. All in all, a great prof. and a class where anyone can do well.

Don't let his funny, charming ways fool you. If you want a good grade stay away from this class. material interesting but exams are wayy to difficult for a second yr course.I felt it pointless to study after a while, I hated psychology after taking this class, and I always loved this kind of material..he ruined it for me.

Tests in this class were really hard but I don't care. This guy might be York's best professor. He actually cares about students learning and being interested! What an idea! He's hysterical too... always adding hilarious anecdotes that make you really remember the material. I'm going to take as many courses with him as I can.

Makes his lectures available online which is so appreciated. He has a sense of humour and can poke fun at the topic. His lectures make stats very simple, his assignments are fair and his tests could be improved if there wasnt so much emphasis on multiple choice.

He is extremely funny and because of that he makes the class more fun and interesting. At least people don't fall asleep during class.

Al Mapp is a really helpful prof. and if you are not very good at math, taking stats with him is amazing. Good Luck.

His lectures are actually fun to attend because of his sense of humour. Tests are fair but he won't bump you up (I ended up with an 89% that he wouldn't bump up to 90%...ouch). Otherwise I have no complaints about him.

I have him for stats 1 & 2. Charming, very down to earth and simplifies difficult concepts. He is so straight to the point with a great sense of humor! Tests are half MC and half Calculations. What else could you want?! Assignments = free marks! Easy one of York's finer profs. I have Biological Basis with him next semester, lets see how that goes.

He is not a hard marker- maybe his TA was last semester. This class is interesting. The material is difficult, but he doesn't expect you to understand it in such depth. He is entertaining and does lots of demos, which help make the material easier to understand. Take the course with him, do the reading, and you'll do well.

I took this with no science background other than that from grade 10. I got an A. Read the book and goto lecture. Some of the short answer questions are from material he lectures on and not in the book. Don't buy the study guide for the text, he doesn't take questions from there for exams. Mapp is an awesome professor!Definitely take it with him!

I just had Mapp for Bio basis of behav. He is amazing, by far my fav. prof. at York. I mean he makes learning about Neurons FUN. Honestly, can you really compete with that? The course material is challenging, but he breaks it down in such a comprehensible way. He CARES about what he is teaching. He uses visuals and props. BEST PROF EVER!!!

I'm not a "math person" at all and before taking stat, I was scared to death but Prof Mapp made the course interesting and comprehensible.Exams are fair.Mc is a bit tricky. However if you read the book well you'll be fine.Extremely funny and kind of cute.

dude... how can you hate on Mapp? He's hands down the best prof teaching stats i & ii. Think he's bad? Try taking Nield or Wolfram, then complain. I've taken 3 courses with Mapp and he's proven to be nothing short of stellar. His stats exams are easy. Either you're lazy and didn't do the readings or you're a dumbass. Either way it's your fault.

Great professor. He made classes very very enjoyable. Also a really funny guy! His analogies and jokes were very entertaining and informative at the same time. His tests were not easy, but this is the only class that I've attended all classes! He was that good!

Great prof. I am terrible at math and was terrified to take this class but he was funny and made the class enjoyable. Stats suck but if you are going to pass, his teaching methods work.

Mapp is a good prof okay but he gets really nervous almost too nervous to even speak and therefore he rushes.he needs to calm down especially with a course as technical as bio basis. He says that he will be general on tests but that is not always true he gets really specific. (Warning) he is not always clear of what he wants on short answers!

By the end of his class I enjoyed stat's which says it all. Funny and engaging. Not an egomaniac & admits to not liking #'s either. Repeats himself/reinforces main points constantly-very helpful. Assignments were clear/interesting(start early)GO to class & do the ch. problems & you will do well. And to top it off, he's very, very easy on the eyes:)

Without Mapp this class would have been really boring. He has a special talent for explaining anything, no matter how complex, in 1.5 hrs tops. Attend lectures & you barely need to read the text.

Professor Mapp is absolutely amazing. He made research methods interesting which is pretty much impossible to do. His lectures were straight forward there was no way u couldn't understand. He showed Seinfeld clips and used demonstrations to prove his points. He really made research methods interesting for someone who expected a C. Got an A instead.

Dr. Mapp is a funny man. But as someone mentioned, the lectures are over-simplified. You must read the textbook with care and attend class as well. S/A's almost from his lectures

Loved the Lectures, has a crazy eccentric teaching style, adds tons of jokes and makes the Lectures very easy to Understand. This is NOT an easy course. Study the Textbook fully (MC ques) + Lecture (Essay + SA). You will def enjoy the class alot for sure, but dont expect an A+ ; )

Got an A+. Went to every lecture (sat in the front and paid attention), read text twice. Easier MCQ, harder SA. SA is marked objectively (there are set points you must include). Really entertaining prof. Fair tests and clear expectations. Recommended course.

Absolutely amazing prof. Research methods is pretty much by the book but he makes lectures interesting with his little stories. I took this as an evening summer school course and despite the fact that the class was in the evening, he made the class lively. I highly recommend him, he's my favourite psych prof at York!

Take STATS with Professor Alister Mapp and ONLY Him!!! He explains all the concepts so well and makes it seem like anyone can do it. You must go to class in order to do well esp for Stats, he will explain it to the point where anyone will understand. Everything else is on you, assignments readings and questions on the back of the book. BEST PROF!

Funny professor who makes learning fun! Major warning about his tests though... they are BRUTAL!!! His power point presentations are simple and straightforward but his tests are extremely difficult! You will get a headache a few questions in.

I don't think profs like him exist anymore. He makes it fun, interactive, and applicable. if you come to every class, read the assigned chapters, you'll be fine. U just have 2 spit out info on the test, not really think. I got a B cuz I was missing lectures, & didn't really read the book, so that's my fault, cuz he played his part to the best!

I agree, lectures are super interesting and fun, but the exam questions can be very tricky. He may ask something you would never expect. Memorize the book from cover to cover, and copy every word he says. He may show a very boring old video in class, and then test you on what was mentioned there. Very hard to get an A+

Very engaging and entertaining professor! His exams are hard, and probably very hard if you don't have a science background (I do, fortunately), but they are fair. I just wish his slides were clearer and more detailed, but his explanations really help, so show up in class!

Best professor at York! He makes the material come alive and is really funny. If you don't take a class with this prof you are missing out. I had a class with him at Keele and at Glendon and I wish he taught all the courses I was in. The exams can be tricky but as long as you put in the work you will end up doing well.

he's very funny. I didn't receive a good mark in the class. must study very hard for tests and make sure you attend every class. 3 tests of equal weight for marks. only recommend if you can sit and memorize bio inside out.

He's hilarious (seriously, he could do standup), and he's hot. He's also a tricky bugger on tests- not what I expected given his character in class, but also not unfair. Make sure you attend class- there's material that's not in the text and differs slightly from other intro bio courses. Doesn't teach intensively- but worth it for the fun.

I was incredibly nervous going into the course thinking it would be my worst mark this year. It actually turned out to be my best. He makes everything interesting and crystal clear. His passion for the course definitely rubs off on you. Make sure you stay on top of the homework, and you'll get an A. Would for sure take a course from him again.

statistics isn't a favoured subject, and he definitely makes it bearable! He's super nice, and if you work hard you can end up with a decent grade. His tests aren't so easy which is a bit unexpected!

Mapp knows how to make stats bearable, despite it being a despised class. He is great in the classroom, however once you try to study/do homework you have no idea what went on. I suggest doing the homework and attending TA tutorials so that studying for the exam is easier.

He is honestly my favourite teacher at York. Math is my worst subject but he made the class bearable. Funny, charming and cares about his students. I had a breakdown in my final exam and he showed genuine concern & was helpful. I don't think there are any other professors as amazing as him. I highly recommend taking stats with this professor.

A funny Prof. who understands many aren't taking the course out of interest. Explains concepts clearly and provides examples to cement your understanding. Short answer on tests are easy and are similar to the ones in the take-home assignments, but multiple choice is tricky and tests your ability to decode the questions rather than your knowledge.

Another great Prof. Works really hard at demystifying and normalizing STATS. Uses real world examples to help you understand. Very approachable and helpful. Great energy.

Easily the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are clear and thought out, and delivered with a sense of humour. If something isn't understood, he's happy to explain in different terms. I'm a 4th year student and he is the best prof I've seen at York, so far. His lectures are not deadly flat. Has a good sense of humor and you can actually feel his brilliance from his talk. Definitely recommended.

Dr. Al Mapp is a great professor that provides the current information from research that helps with really understanding the theories presented in class. He even brings in demonstrations which helps appeal to the different learning styles. We didn't have assignments but the course was divided into 3 exams with equal weight.

The class is a risk being 6 credits against its counterpart halves. Take mapp if you feel confident in your thinking skills. The MC is very tricky. 4 20% tests, 4 5% assignments and over all a very laid back experience. U can bring ur own cheatsheet. Lectures are hilarious. Marking done by the TA is just ridiculous , so be aware of that

One of the best! From the beginning of the year to the final thesis presentation day, he was very clear in terms of what he expected. He gave us detailed rubrics for every presentation and paper we had to hand in, making the entire course less daunting. His TAs are also super helpful, which is critical to doing well in this course. He's awesome!

Amazing lecturer, he can make something ridiculously boring like stats seem interesting. His tests are hard, but it's stats... He does his best to prepare you and allows cheat sheets on the exam. Get the assignments done before the exam, it's helpful.

Great teacher who manages to make a stats class something to look forward to. His explanations of the material are very thorough and it is hard to get lost. However attendance is quite important unless you are naturally good at math related things.

Professor Mapp is amazing! He makes stats very clear and fun. I took stats with a different prof before and failed the courses and left it with 0 knowledge. So taking it with Map was a brand new for me. He allows you to have a cheat sheet. You have 4 tests and 4 assignments that are not crazy difficult and the book he assigns is easy to understand!

Hands down Professor Mapp is my favourite prof here at York. He takes a horribly dry topic (stats) which I was dreading, and makes it interesting. I actually enjoy going to his lectures. I should add that I am very bad at math and so was very nervous about taking this class, however he is very good at explaining and making it seem easy

Loved professor Mapps's class. He is truly amazing. A is alsolutely possible. The 4 assignment are easy and you can easily get 100% in those. While lecturing, he repeats the concepts and spends time on them which is very helpfulfull. Take ta Annalise if you want A+ because she is very helpful. Mapp had power points which are very helpful. One of my favorite teacher! If you attend class, you will understand everything that needs to be on the test, he's that good. He simplifies all the math and makes it easy. His assignments were fair and basically similar questions for the midterms and exam. I would definitely take him again!

One of my favourite professors. He's super funny, yet inspirational. He makes something dry like Stats become easy to understand. You would feel very eager to go to class every week. Take PASS sessions if you need more help. Last time I took it with Tutor Andre and he's very helpful. Got A+ thanks to both of them.

I don't know him personally but this prof is great. You are not forced to go to lectures for participation marks or hidden questions. All info on the slides. Read the textbook and do ALL the assigned questions, and you can get at least an A. Material isn't hard. I skipped 40% of the classes. Textbook is extremely good and Prof is really clear.

He is amazing and makes stats easier to understand but his test are a bit tough. He is hilarious which makes going to class and staying awake easier.

Honestly, I failed stats twice - all previous times i had horrible profs who just didn't care. Taking Mapp's class was the best decision I could have made - he makes stats clear and easy and he's funny! This is the only class that I've ever taken at York where I WANT to be there. 1000000000% recommend!!!

Professor Mapp makes stats bearable. He's funny and engaging and does his best to explain all material thoroughly. I found he moved through the material a little too slowly, but he just wanted to ensure everyone understood what was happening. He does his best to ensure everyone gets a good grade. Would definitely reccomend him.

Mapp is amazing! I highly recommend him as a professor. He keeps the class engaged and awake for 3 hours. Annalise (TA) however is a very tough grader so make sure you include even the smallest of details because she takes FULL marks off for everything.

Nothing but good things to say about this prof. He made stats enjoyable, easy and made me want to come to lecture and learn. I was hesitant about stats thinking I was going to fail and I ended up with an A!! He makes sure his students understand the material and makes the lectures fun. The best professor I've had at York hands down!!!!

Definitely one of the best profs at york!! He is SO funny, and makes the course a lot more easy to understand! For full year course we had 4 tests, 4 assignments which were REALLY helpful for the test. Do the textbook questions at the end of the chapters for extra practice! Really enjoyed the class!

This man somehow makes math fun. I actually laughed every class he is so so so funny. I wish he taught everything, if you have the choice you have to take his course!

Alistair is definitely a real gem wish he taught all my classes . I actually looked forward to going to stats class every week because he is hilarious and makes the concepts easy to understand. It will be very helpful to go to tutorial every morning as the TAs help to solidify what you need to know and what is expected on the test and assignments.

I wish Al taught other classes too. He's really funny. I found his examples to be too simple so I went to the Teaching Assistants for help. Marie was really sweet! She really took the time to explain things to me. Use the textbook for practice on the exams as they are worth a lot. Assignments are fairly simply.

good prof and knows what hes talking about but sometimes he goes way too fast for someone who isnt too familiar with the concepts. really funny and hes able to stay interesting and energized the whole time. makes me wanna at least try lol. melissa our TA is really nice too.

I loved Professor Mapp!! He will honestly make you like stats! he keeps his lectures to the point and only covers a small portion each week so it is very easy to understand. His assignments are really helpful because it will be similar to the long answers on the tests. The only con I had for this class was the MC on the tests; pretty tricky.

Definitely a solid choice for a Stats course! His lectures are a bit repetitive but he tries his best to make them interesting. He really makes the course easy and simple, so an A is definitely achievable. The only downside is that the course itself is pretty homework-heavy, but otherwise a great experience!

Mapp is one of the FUNNIEST profs at York. If you're worried about taking stats, don't be. Also, if you have Annalise as your TA, go to her for help. My grade went up after I went to her for extra help. She's great! The m/p part of the tests can be tough so make sure you read the textbook. Assignments are great for booting your grade so work at it

Hilarious professor who makes stats less intimidating. Multiple choice questions are difficult, while problems are simpler and do require that you read the textbook and slides, but second half of lecture is tutorial where the TA answers any questions and helps students to better understand all course concepts.

I was so scared of taking stats, but this prof is very funny, approachable and he explains everything really good and A is easily achievable just focus in class and dont skip because this class u cant self study u gotta go to the lectures.

Stats doesn't have the most exciting content, but this prof really makes the class enjoyable, great sense of humor!

Prof Mapp is the best prof ever. I was beyond scared for stats but he makes the his lectures very clear, structured and repeats key information so you know what's important. He cracks jokes to make the class more fun and he's full of energy. Genuinely enjoyed attending his classes. Would take any class with him!

Professor Mapp is the BEST psyc prof I have come across!! I had decided to retake stats and am so glad I got lucky enough to have him. He makes learning stats enjoyable. Exams based off slides so go to class, absorb the material and you are golden! PRACTICE is key!! He is so funny & very fair. No surprises! Would love to have him as a prof again!!!

Professor Mapp is a GEM. I would literally DIE for this prof. I needed this credit for my psych major and chose to be in his class based on previous reviews. Best decision I have made in my 2 years at uni. Do not get me wrong the material was hard but he explained it so well and was HILARIOUS, so if you gotta take this class then take it with him.

Really one of the best teachers I've had at York i absolutely HATE math but needed stats for my psych major and he made it super easy for me i honestly think i would have failed in any other class he makes things so clear and uses very good examples he would literally tell you exactly what would and won't be on the test just an amazing teacher

Amazing professor. Makes math easy to understand. Does not use big words to confuse you and makes jokes throughout the lectures to keep you interested. LOVE HIM!

Professor Mapp is the most amazing professor I've ever had! He's hilarious and explains the concept perfectly! However, don't forget to read the book to get an A+

I love this prof, he makes stats extremely enjoyable. As a psych student, I am not familiar with math, but professor mapp elaborates his lectures, making the material very understandable. He makes students want to attend his classes as well as allowing students to feel comfortable to ask questions and participate. Amazing professor, one of the best

He's a decent guy all around, but his tests sometimes cover content not discussed in detail in lectures. Be prepared to rely on the textbook to prep for tests

I was petrified to take stats, but Dr. Mapp made it bearable. He is so understanding about the fact that most Psych majors dread having to take stats, so he tailors to that. The content is still difficult (especially in the second half of the course) if you don't have the greatest relationship with math, but I would highly suggest Dr. Mapp.

As someone who finds math difficult I found his stats course surprisingly easy, the way he describes everything during lectures makes it so easy to understand and he is genuinely caring and listens to student concerns. There are weekly assignments that aren't too difficult, just take good lecture notes, and you don't really need to read the text

THE BEST, BEST, BEST professor I've ever met at York, take his courses without any hesitation. His lecture is clear for students to understand, no big words at all. You won't feel like you are in a formal traditional class learning his materials, but more like gathering information by having that coffee-time with your friends afternoon at Tims.

Alistair is by far the funniest prof at York. He made Stats engaging and frequently spices up his lectures with hilarious anecdotes to keep you attentive. Tests were a little harder than expected but they are all Multiple-Choice. Tip: Do not miss out on his first and final lecture. You'll see why

One of the best teacher I've ever had. He makes hard math seem SO easy and simple. His lectures are purely based on whats used in real life. He does not teach what we wouldn't use. His lectures are fun, straight to the point, and very easy to understand. Especially a difficult class like Statistics, I am so glad I took it from him.

I had Alistair as a prof last year and it was the best class I've ever taken at York , thanks to him. He makes Statistics seem like an easy subject. I thought I was horrible at anything involving math, but turns out, it just depends on the teacher. He was an amazing one. I was so scared of statistics until I took it with Dr.Mapp. He makes math genuinely fun, his TA Gary is so awesome, and together they make the class amazing. I would highly recommended this class with him. If you put in the time and effort, you will do fine.
