He's straight forward and funny at the higher level of course. Don't be late !!!
Although cleat in what ever he taught, his exams were difficult often unfair.

worst mark I ever got but really enjoyed the class
funny, good teacher, tough talker but marking is reasonable
An excellent teacher, knows his stuff inside out and can explain very well. Polite to some who respect him and try hard, while with others who dont he doesnt really put up with...
He may appear scary at first, but if you take it all as a joke he can actually be a really fun teacher.
I failed all his tests too...
He is son of the ***** but still a very good instructor. Two thumbs up. Keep up the good works.

super hard exams, but clear lectures... I HATE THIS CLASS
this is an terrible course. never take his course if you want to pass econ150, donot take his , god.
He teaches quite clear but his true or false questions is tricky and hard. I found his class is tough and hard to get through.
tough instructor..very clear explanation but you have to think hard on the exams coz the exams are totally different from the notes. he makes you to apply all the concepts in practices. hard exams...very strict also
Very good teacher, but does lose his temper occasionally
He's a great teacher! Being a girl with good taste in men, he's the sexiest teacher in our Uni!But that's not the point. Class is challenging, and exams are difficult.
he's HARD. but he explains well. if u take his course, u must MEMORIZE every single word from his notes. his notes are so important...
Excellent teacher, difficult subject, available for extra help, you MUST stay on top of reading + assignments. Exams are extremely challenging, but not impossible. Also- he is unbelievably gorgeous. Yumm!!
He has the most wonderful way of making a difficult and boring topic so clear and interesting. His test are tricky and not easy but if you pay attention in his lectures and study you'll do fine.
1st problem: He's snotty, childish, stubburn, seems to resent his students and maybe his career/status. Threatens u to buy donuts if for an reason u dont do a h/w asigmt. Doesn't even mark the h/w let alone count it twards ur grade(just beware).
His coarse is a True/False Test, but when he doesn't clarify his points, its impossible to do well.
The best of the best Douglas College has to offer. Teaches relevant issues that can be used outside of class, tough teacher but fair, and can make any subject interesting. Show him respect and he does the same.
Best teacher ever... !!!!!
The best Econ teacher I ever had. Lectures are very interesting. Makes you bring doughnuts for the class for not doing an assignment but at least it doesnt affect your grade. Exams are hard>pay attention to the class and you'll do fine. A dedicated and passionate economist. Definitely recommended.
I cannot say he's hard. have to be very very very careful for his test cuz the words are tricky.
Allan is a great prof. Great notes - very clear and concise, and good teaching method
He seems to know his stuff and encourages you to learn about current world events, but his tests are just brutal. We had a midterm of 75 marks. 60 marks out of the 75 marks was on true and false! If the statement is false, you have to explain why it is false. The way he teaches is very half @ssed!
really hard test..
He's really good at explaining what ever it is that he is trying to get accross.
His test are brutal. He is interesting to listen to and is funny in a sarcastic way. The higherst mark in our class was below 80%. You can work your butt off and still get a lousy grade. I don't recommend him if you want to keep your GPA up.
allan is the best professor! has a good sense of humour also...his explanations were clear.. ..his tests were hard and tricky.. but you will do fine if you understand the materials! he also ask students to bring some treats if they did not do their assignment.. eniwei! best prof ever! (o"o)v
Allan is a very good instructer. He was very clear about what he was teaching and his wittiness and humor made classes very pleasurable to attend. His test are extremely hard if you do not understand how to apply what you know. Straight memorization will not help you here. Understanding is the key! A great class for those seeking a challenge.
Allan is a great teacher. His notes are clear and is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He makes class more fun b/c he has a sense of humor. BTW he really likes to use beer as his examples for supply and demand. He is a very nice teacher, very understanding as long as you talk to him. He changed the way I look at Econ entirly.
This guy is a pretty good lecturer. Good at explaining various things and his notes are crystal clear and very straightforward. He is a very enthusiastic and passionate economics professor. Though, his exams are not easy and you better know your stuff on them. However, even though I only got a B in his class, I learned A LOT. Funny too.
This guy is good at explain the economics concepts, but he will test on you more difficult.but you know,if you really wanna know something about business, you will study hard,if you care your GPA only, take with other teacher and learn nothing, anyway, entirely up to you, still,i highly recommend on you this teacher.
Extremely horrible instructor. He holds strong racism. He's always rude to student. If you forgot to do bring something or a assignment to class, he will just blame you in front the whole class. TERRIBLE. Also, his tests are extremely hard, if you want to get good marks in this course, don't take his class. He always says something bad to stdents!!
BY FAR THE BEST PROF OUT THERE!
He's a great teacher. You will learn lots of things.
He explains things well and clearly. Quizzes are okay, usually T/F but you have to give reasons if it's false. Be careful with his exam paper, kind of difficult compare to his quizzes.
worst prof ever. do not take economics with him.
he deffinitly a ****, usually pick on one student and make fun of him all the way to final exams, not respect student even if you respect him, very sarcastic and take everything not serious..he is very cocky, and such a kid , dont know how he become a teachers, when he make fun of everything especially students. HE IS A ****,
hes hard...and he will test u on things he didnt go over in class and expect u to know it
Class is fun.but the test is hard.Don't recommend him.
he is going good so far for me. explains the econ terms well and makes some weird scary jokes but funny none the less.
really knows how 2 teach, however the tests r hard... b prepared!
His notes are very helpful, but his 4 T/F quizzes (worth 10% EACH) are extremely hard. He seems to only care about those who are doing well, and those who aren't, well, they are just out of luck.. =( I wish he could give us some assignments as an indicator for me to know how well I'm doing, since teachers will "usually" go over the hwk.

His notes are very clear, but quizzes are very difficult. I almost passed out in class. Quizzes were worth 10% each, so they are pretty much 1% per question. Do well in quizzes so you won't have to suffer later on.
He is overall good but he is a tough marker. He marks with SFU standards but seems to forget that Douglas doesn't curve grades which could have an impact in your final grade. You definately have to go to every single class.
his class is really good, he explains everything very clearly. and the ways he teaches us the theory, will make us quite easy to memorize. i like his class a lot
GOD, ALLAN IS A VERY INSPIRING PROF!!test questions were pretty much from the notes, the only time you needed to use the textbook was for the final. make sure you know the name&author of the text, there was a question on the final worth 2 marks for it. overall, enjoyed that class considering i hate macro/micro. 5essays/1midterm/1presentation/1final
Allan has a lot of good examples. He cracks cheesy jokes all the time and his T/F quizzes are very difficult and count for 40% of your mark. Class can be intimidating to speak up but come during office hours and he's willing to help! All in all, he really knows how to teach but the content is tough. Be prepared to go to every class and use the text
6 Essay / 1 midterm / 1 final. Extremely hard marker 75% of class failed.
Allan has a good (but strange) sense of humor. He's an easy going person but a very tough marker. Pay attention to the lectures closely! Most of the questions come from his lectures. I believe he's somewhat unfair, as he tests students on things such as his place of birth and the authors of the textbook. This is not course relevant material.
Allan's a good guy. He's engaging, has a dark sense of humour, and teaches the concepts very clearly. He shows respect to students who put in the effort required. That being said: his courses are brutal and soul-destroyingly difficult. But if you take a lot of notes and put in the work, you'll walk away with a great education from this guy.
lectures are well organized and materials are crystal clear. take him if you are a kind of a student that learns from paying attention and good at taking notes.
great prof !! go for him
good guy, ive taken econ 1150 1250 and 2491 with him, take notes and pay attention, best prof at douglas ive decided
He is good enough on his lectures, but he is a tough marker. If you get a low mark on the midterm, you better drop it. There is no bell curve, and his tests are consistently hard till final.
I didn't like his True/False/Explain quizzes which he seems to rely heavily on and are worth a significant part of the grade. A lot of his exam questions seemed to be focused on memorization rather than understanding the concepts.
If you go to class and take down all the notes your guaranteed at least a B. He is a very hard marker but for the students who try in his class he tries to give them a break on the second mid term.
He is a hard marker and relies on his notes. His true/false questions are really hard and relies on them the most. If the class does not do good on one topic, he will keep repeating it on every quiz and midterm till they know it. Does not give assignments which is a draw back. Take the class if you only want to do the reading. Be aware of him!
BE AWARE OF HIM! His quizzes are very hard and does not give any assignments which is a draw back because if you don't do assignments, how will you know what are you doing wrong or need to improve on. Take him if you only want to read the text, nothing else. Tends to make silly comments and jokes. He is a very hard marker.
I never was interested in Economics before, but Allan spark some interest towards the subject. I have to admit he's a tough teacher, but you'll leave the course educated. Take down all his notes, ask questions, and jot down his examples. No reason you can't get at least a B!
Allan is a VERY hard instructor. His quizzes and tests go directly with his in class notes - I literally never used the textbook and lived off of his notes. It is a very demanding course. He educates you extremely well. I came in a communist - I then came out as a Milton Friedman capitalist.
allan is by far the best econ professor at douglas college. he really knows how to teach and explain his course if you listen and study hard you will get an A in his class. Or and he does not tolerate nonsense which i really liked too.
Well. Allan teaches well. Each thing he teaches makes sense. But his tests. OMG. You have to study a lot for that. He doesnt give marks easily. YOU HAVE TO STUDY HIS SUBJECT. It would be better if you dont buy textbook, coz his notes are good enough to clear the subject.
He does not follow the book at all but you need to read the book in order to understand the concept. Tests are quite long and there are no assignments, projects, participation or attendance marks.
He wasn't very clear with what was going to be on his T/F quizzes. Also we all bought the textbook so we could look at examples from his lectures. The textbook is $150 and a waste of my money. His final exam was completely different from his midterm exam and was not properly explained in class. Before the final, everyone received a failing mark.
Economics is a fun class if you put the time, don't expect to pass otherwise! His university class has a higher grading average of 90% because students do not waste time. If you want to get a good mark is very possible to do so! Classes are very dynamic never boring.
Allan is a good teacher and his explanations are to the point; you'll enjoy his lectures. But beware he's a tough grader, it's either full marks or a zero. He doesn't seem to be interested in knowing what you've learnt. Overall a fairly good professor with tough testing methods.
Best prof at Douglas at giving lectures. However he is a relatively tough marker, if you get half of the question right then you will probably only get 0 or 25% of the mark. But if you paid attention to his lectures then you will find the exams quite easy. His lectures are very interesting and he makes it easy to understand. Does not use textbook.
worst teacher ever, not nice, not helpful, bad accent ,hard quizzes tests do not ever think to take his class always talking about students at Douglas college are stupid and comparing them with SFU students.........
i dont think Allan is tough grader, he is very fair. He is nice prof, he explains everything very clear, just come to his office if there is a problem, he is very welcome and willing to help u. i like him so much as my prof! his quiz make u understand the concept.
Allan is a great teacher. He's clear and gives great examples. The content is difficult though and if you don't read, pay attention and study you will have a very difficult time and most likely do terrible. You get tests, midterms and finals that have a heavy weight on t/f questions, if false you must say why and be precise. Tougher than it sounds.
Allan was awesome, he explains everything very well and he makes sure you actually understand. If you pay attention during lectures and take notes you are guaranteed a high mark. Does not take attendance BUT if you skip one class then you're screwed because he does not post online notes, ONLY TEACH IN CLASS(which he is amazing at). would recommend!
I have learned EVERYTHING, I read ALL his lectures and moreover, read from additional sources, I study really hard, but got just "C-".
He does not use blackboard so notes are not posted. He really knows his stuff and can give real life example. He also interacts with students well even during break, he would pull up a joke. His Quizzes, T/F. 1.5marks each right explanation. tough grader. he kept on telling us he does not care whether student pass or not. so class avg is below 60
Alan is difficult. He notes at the beginning of class he's going to make you think economically (so not ethically). Alan believes economics are the way of the world and he is very good at trying to convince people of that. If you take his class beware, he is difficult, and narrow minded. Take what he says with a grain of salt, and leave it behind.
IF u want to ruin your GPA take this professor , He gives very hard quiz and is a very tough grader, very confusing professor, don't know what is going on in his mind.
Don take his class. No respect to student. Leture is long and boring listen him to talk.
Review dated 10 November 2017 is very accurate. I left in fury as he was capricious, not academically rigorous--obvious to anyone having taken ENGL 1130--and very arbitrary. As a result of these 3, he'd mess with your reality (gaslighting) and drag you down to his level. Textbook case of rent seeking behavior and a walking contradiction.
Allan Matadeen is the best instructor in Douglas College for Economics. If anyone is really interested in learning Economics then must go with Allan's class. He is an amazing human being. If u attend his lectures, listen to him carefully and read only the class notes you will easily get a good grade. Hard work and efforts matter.
Long-winded. No textbook. 4-5 in-class written assignments, 1 midterm, 1 final, and an easy presentation project. You get the impression that he doesn't care much about the course or whether or not you learn; he just speaks for 3 hours from his own knowledge on various topics. Only way to pass is to show up and write down whatever he says.
He provides no review material, or any examples of what his quizzes and tests are like. The quizzes are 10 T/F, and make sure you never have more than 2 trues, because you will fail. Class average for the midterm was 55%. Will put things on the exam he said he won't. Even if you try your best, Allan may not be the right prof for you.
Never take this teacher if you want to pass your program. He always says in class that he will make sure we repeat the course and he do mean that. he dont give any assignment to do, there are only few quizzes in class that include just true and false which are way more tough than one can think about. Dont make a mistake to take his class.
OMG. I have taken so many classes at both SFU and Douglas and this has been one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. I studied for more than 5 hours per week, used 2 textbook and practice problems, attended every single class. At the end I still couldn't pass. Allan seems nice person but the grading is harsh. Maybe it wasn't him, but me
Dont take him
Take him if you want to learn life, he will never ever ask you to use textbook. If you understand his lecture you can get an A, best instructor ever.
I don't know if people were in the same class as me , Allan was great! The lectures were interesting, easy to follow and they truly challenge your world view. While Textbook was not really mandatory, I have read all of the chapters of concepts he has covered in class. Practice questions made all the difference, but the tests only cover lectures.
no comments. worst professor of all times
great prof
He is a very funny guy. It is a very lecture-heavy course but he makes them relatable to you and current events. He adds humour into examples which helps keep everyone engaged. Its a difficult course as he posts no notes so you need to follow along and take the notes.
Never go for him..!!!
Allan's a boomer. He's well-spoken and will take the time to teach you the material in-class and during office hours. But he doesn't prepare you for his tests, which demand that you have an excellent grasp of the subject. Just going over the notes doesn't reward you. Took him during COVID and he didn't host any online classes. He just winged it.
He doesn't care about you or your grade. That sums it all.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES he doesnt care about his students just talks and leaves doesnt really tell about the tests nothing youll have to self study the whole course
Avoid at all costs! There are no assignments and most of the grade relies on midterm and final. Be prepared to study extra hours, as his lecture is useless.
Save yourself please. Never take this prof. For both of the classes he teaches the mid term average was 50%. He has failed his students and accepts no responsibility. On top of that, he is a horrible communicator and does not have an approachable personality.
As a person he's a very nice man and he does care about his students (that is, if you show improvement in his class). His lectures are ridiculously long without effective visuals and can be quite plain. Quizzes/test are tough, if you don't understand the material in depth GL. His questions test you on hypothetical applied situations.
Do not take him he is seriously awful. He just pass comments thinking he is doing comedy but it feels to the person very rude. Moreover his lectures dosnt cover anything and the exams cover everything there is very few chances to pass the course. All the marks came from midterm and final so there is no proper organization of course.
Allan is old school. His lectures are interesting, but at some moments it is difficult to get them. You need to study by yourself at home. However, Allan gives us extra points in the last quiz and also tries to be interested in his classes. I know Allan gave me extra points in the final test, but he never told me. So, he is a good person.
Generally the rudest professor i've ever seen. I was in shock in his class. He was swearing at students and asking us if we were stupid. He is so discouraging. He says 70% of students fail his class. Please don't take his courses because you will feel so disrespected.
Stay away from him if you ever want peace in your life because this man is there to ruin it. He doesn't care about you and he'll always try his best to fail you.He is so discouraging that he said he fails 70% of his class literally said this ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE CLASS! ->uses unrequired egs of weed and drinks, racist, awful tests, disrespectful.
His class was insanely hard especially when I was an international student but that made me actually study, and definitely learned something. That was a great experience I would take his class again for sure.
He is so a rude professor, all things on exams and quizzes are not included in his lectures or textbook. Must take note of all he said. Don't take his class
To be honest, he can come off as a bit rude. The assignments are also quite difficult.
Just dont take any class with him. Test quizzes are too much and he thinks he is a cool professor but honestly its the other way around.
His personality sucks. He said not to raise hands if we don't understand cuz that's an us problem. No one is allowed to talk only him. 5% will be taken off our grade if our phones made a sound, if they did he'd make the exams harder. First class he told us all to drop out, he gets paid regardless. Not someone who should be a teacher!
I took a total of four(4) classes with Allan at SFU and Douglas. He is brilliant, and yes traditional. Avoid if you have a short attention span and just want "nice". You must attend class, take notes and work. Earn his respect and he will respect you. Exams are different than quizzes, forcing you to think critically. Take him if you want to LEARN.
Professor Matadeen can come across as blunt, but if you stay engaged and use resources like unstuckstudy for exam prep, you can do well. Tough assignments and exams, but worth powering through for the knowledge gain.
