Very easy midterm, tricky final. Overall, the course is pretty easy

He is very helpful and nice prof. Well prepared in the lecture.
Don't skip his classes!
HE IS NOT NICE
He is not nice, but he IS funny.
The best prof I have ever had
No Comments
Good teacher, funny, don't get on his bad side
Go to class, he doesn't use the book...
excellent prof... very flexible and accomodating as well
No Comments
Very intelligent, Class is challenging though. Don't mess with him!
DONT MISS CLASS.... the text is useless...
Matadeen is hilarious, but is mean! His midterms are extremely tricky!
Easy midterm, but final may be hard! Interesting lecture with lots of notes.

Bad attitude to students and missing student's assignments
Final will be hard coz some stupid pp had their cells rang in the class
Good prof
He is okay in some way, funny, but he cramp 3 chapters of note in the end =(
Rule #1: Turn off your cell phone!
Tests are fair, based on notes, very organized & efficient
just try to understand all his notes and don't even bother buying the textbook

great prof! very organized and clear..know everything from his notes! no text!
Ok midterm but the final was very tricky
WAY TOO HARD
Good professor. Really understands his material
The best prof ever.
Completely unhelpful. Self centred and egocentric
Good prof, makes course interesting
Possibly the only SFU instructor with a sense of humor. He can teach too!
Good lecturer, hard tests

an outstanding lecturer
Tough classs, but awesome prof!
excellent teacher
As someone else said Completely unhelpful. Self centred and egocentric Condescending, too.
very good prof.
unfair! Assignments are not the same as exam. Not helpful at all.
nice prof., but with a lot of ego though.can teach.assigments are demanding, but didn't really helped on the exams.needs a lot work.
huge ego... but he can back it up. Fair
His attitude made coming to tutorials very uncomfortable. I made up for that by going to a different tutorial time. The lectures were delivered well but the droning voice is hypnotic and can put one to sleep.
Extremely hard prof. Expects you to know everything inside out, even if minor. Homework takes on average 5+ hours to complete in one week, even though less than 5 questions. Exams brutally hard. Even if know homework inside out, can still fail final.
Remember to turn off your cell phone,... or prepare to die!
Got the highest mark in the midterm. Ends up failing the Final! Final is a killer!
This guy sucks. He thinks he's better than other people. Does not help people if they have questions. Avoid at all cost! Not funny at all.
His exam are hard, but that is the only way to seperate the A+ from the A, right? I like his ego-ness. The best thing is that he can and willing to teach!
he is sneaky, and hv no sense of fairness.

difficult to understand his accent. makes an easy subject difficult.
Best Prof ever!
great lectures, easy assignments, tough exams.
This guy is the worst prof ever....he picks on ppl and only cares about the ladies....the funny thing is that he drives a BMW...that's for young ppl...not an old guy like him.....his accents....on man.....only aliens would understand him...
He is an awesome teacher. He explains things very clearly and is available for help. I would recommend him!
a bitter little man
they should take this angry little man out of the class room before he explodes!
Didn't think they could be that bad.
He needs to let loose!!
doesn't care about his students just does things the way he always has...
he picks on students, but sure can teach
IF people living in Canda can't speak English that's their problem... He's a great TEACHER

he is sure a tuff prof to have, but just remember to listen to what he says carefully in lectures, attend all tutorials and memorize his assignments and lecture notes before an exam, and u r going to be okie guarenteed. i got a B+ by just doing that
he is the best prof EVER!dont freak out when u see the midterm;) FINAL just a peice of cake:Ohe is fair & u learn soooooo much in his lectures. Dont u ever miss his lectures. He is simply the Best!
Nice Prof!

don't be put off by his in-lecture demeanor
The man's a legend. Apart from being sexy, he's funny as well. On the bad side his tests are real hard to do well in
Easy to understand lectures, but bad prof cuz he's not helpful at all!
He hates cellphone ring during the lecture.
His Exams are out of this world. Don't bother buying the book you'll NEVER use it!
Excellent Professor, he teaches real well if you actually pay attention. Just difficult material. Tests are kinda tricky but you'll get plenty of practice. Don't need to buy the txtbook, I've read all the readings and often its not related
Just try to survive the final. That's all I can say. Just try to survive...
Midterm was alright, final exam was brutally hard.... I was left scratching my head and ended up with a not so nice grade :(
he is nice to only young girls. otherwise he's an ****. he required totally useless textbook, and u have to copy his notes that are only useful to build your grade.
His Lecture Notes are clear and concise but basic. His midterms, homework and Final is much tougher. Not very friendly, usually yells at you if you ask questions.
dont buy the book. copy his notes, do ALL the problems, be prepared to get SHlT KICKED on the final and midterm if you dont. exam is well rounded, i think he seperates the grades well and doens't leave it to the curve
unfortunatley there has been a lot of talk about sexism which is why he still as yet deos not have tenure. If you are lookig for someone fair - avoid at all costs
Legend! Bad attitude but amazing teaching skills! Exams are tough but I would love to take class with him again
No Comments
An excellent prof. Take really good notes and put 100% into the class and you will come out with a good grade. Don't buy the text!
fair marker and fairly good lecturer. people complain about the hard midterm and finals but it all gets scaled anyways so why does it matter? what matters is that you separate the smart from the challenged, which is what his class does.
Super Easy... yo only need to write 1 case and that's 50%. It is like all or nothing gamble. No workload at all. Who care if he is a jack or not!
notes are clear, but rarely came in handy... final was extremely hard.
This guy is crazy. Incosiderate, and tries hard to act funny. His favorite phrase is "if your uncle dies..on the exam". I wish it was his uncle that dies on the day of the exam. Wonder if he would be here to watch over us...
Matadeen, sexy? Don't think so... He is funny, but this doesn't make him a good prof. Loves himself and it shows. BUS207-forget the text, study notes. Tricky exams. Bus 478-unreliable. Made us make a choice without enough info (about case).
Midterm is OK, Final is really hard. Over all, pretty good teacher.
He is tough...But he almost teaches every semester... so no choice...
no teaching ability
He's a good teacher. The material can be difficult, but he explains it very well. Lecture and notes are useful. Exam are fair, questions based on homework.
Trying to match up the lecture material to the textbook was like a 300 lb man slipping into a thong. It just doesn't fit.
His midterm was alright, but the final was brutal...way harder than any practice problems. Overall a really tough course and prof.
His in-class teaching is crystal clear. His notes are helpful, and he's funny as well. He's very helpful during his office hours. But his exams are ridicilous, as they really ask about your understanding on the class.
expect to know EVERYTHING in the notes and dont forget econ 103. Lots of tricks on his exams, very hard, but interesting course. If only his exams weren't so hard :( avg doesn't cut it.
Interesting course...Prof is pretty kool..and helpful clear lectures.....hard course but you gotta work for it..notin comes easy
It's bad enough the course material itself is hard, his exams don't make it any easier! Bad Bad Bad
No Comments
Awesome prof. Sure he's strict but it makes the class fair for everyone. He's clear and prepared in his lectures. His smartass jokes are hilarious... Enjoyed this course very much
awesome prof
Lecture notes are super basic stuff. Midterms and finals are another story. He like to use negative marking on his true and false questions, so it is very possible to get 0 out of 20 on a test by getting 10 questions right and 10 questions wrong. Had TA's that couldn't speak English in tutorials
He's a very very good prof. He teaches very clear and after attending each lectures, you sort of have the lecture content in your mind. When you go home and study for it, it's just like reviewing stuffs... Just go to all of his lectures and do all the homeworks ALONE (as suggested) and you'll fine
T.a.l.k.s l.i.k.e A. R.o.b.o.t. Good prof though. Homework assigns were okay, but final, damn near cried at the difference, plus the fact it was only 2 hrs instead of 3 (which he didn't mention until 5 mins before). And it's pronounced a-vay-LAH-bull NOT a-vay-LAY-bull
his teaching is kinda of clear and assigments are okey. Final and midterm are all the things we learnt in the lecture. not really difficult
Great teacher
Great Prof! Very interesting lectures even though it is at 830 in the morning and 2hrs long. Fair exams and straight forward if you did the homework. Awsome accent, Movado watch (Bling!), funny jokes, but the text is kind of useless.
best prof ever! I'm not doing that good in this course, but Allan is just a very good prof. His way of teaching is excellent, very clear and have good jokes. I wish I can take another course with him.
He is absolutely the worst prof I've ever had. He has terrible attitude, no interest in lecturing, and no idea how to teach. Avoid this course and take ECON 301 instead. You will get a much more thorough understanding of economics and a much higher grade.
One of the best profs i've ever had. Explains everything clearly. He's quite demanding but he makes the course interesting. Interesting attitude.
Good class, funny teacher, great teacher. The notes are continually coming during class, but as long as you read the text, you'll do perfectly fine. And yes, the tests are tricky
My marginal satisfaction on this course is zero which means my satisfaction on this course reaches max. level...
I think he is a good teacher. Too bad that 10% of the class MUST fail. Overall I do not think it is a hard course. Keep up with the readings and do ALL your assignments...by yourself! I did enjoy a lot his sense of humor. I know some people do not like him but I just love him!!
Excellent instructor overall. His lectures are funny and interesting.
great prof! awesome jokes! he is very clear and thorough when he teaches. you'd totally understand what he's explaining. assign and exams are fine, not hard at all.
He is a good prof, clear and funny jokes too, though the course content isn't that easy and he really enforce the rule of failing the last 20% of student. other than that, this is a must course for Business student anyways.
Nice prof, midterm was o.k but finals was relatively easy, make sure you do all his assignments before final and it will be ezzzzy
allan is a great teacher. the material's tough, but much more manageable with the new book. he was never poor before, but the new text makes him and the course quite a bit better. wouldn't have anyone else teach it. there's a reason why it's always him.
best econ/bus prof ever!!! Lecture and notes are great, but final is abit hard.
Wonderful prof. Loved his sense of humor. Course is hard, but he made it fun. He's sarcastic but he really wants you to learn; won't give you the answer just like that, you have to learn on your own, but he's willing to help you. Do as many practice q's you can get your hands on.
Though it is the second week of this semester, I am already tired of his pace of teach ---- way slow. Please dont let me get to sleep.... Mr. Matadeen.....
exams were HARD....He is not that helpful...and he is mean too..........discourage students to ask for help!!!
Oh boy! He's not such a great prof!!!His marking is unfair and his exams are hard (especially the final)! I wonder if i can still rely on this website after how many good comments he got!!
Great instructor. His exams are easy. The final was tricky, I guess... but the tools that you need are what you have already learned from your assignments. Do all the assignments ALONE and you'll be fine.
Tricky class. Take the lower assignment marks in exchange for doing them by yourself. In turn, you'll do better on the midterm and final
The course itself is not that hard if you are good at math. He is funny, ie. lots of jokes in Lec. For this course, attanding Lec. and doing the assignment on your own are the necessary conditions for getting a good grade. If you do a bit of the readings, no problem of ending up within A rang.
When it comes time for 478 - take it with matadeen. So STRAIGHT FORWARD. You know exactly what to do, what to expect. Do it, and you'll get a good grade. Not to mention that he's hillarious. Note that I HATED 207, but LOVED 478. There's a certain amount of respect that he accords you once you've made it to 4th yr.
Allan is a very good prof. No wonder he's been teaching this course for so long. You MUST attend all lectures and do ALL asst's on your own. This course is challenging but in a good way. It was much better than what I expected from ex-students comments.
very very interesting and clear lectures. this course isn't easy so go to ALL lectures and tutorials. read materials and do assignments on your own. BE PREPARED! Really nice guy though!
His teaching is clear, assignments are hard, exams are also hard because of the T&F qs (VERY tricky)...don't worry you'll get used to his type of questions by the 3rd assignment. Never miss a lecture, even the last one...
Enjoyable class. If you are a serious student, you'll find this course very rewarding. Plus it's really not that hard to get a great mark. All depends on your attitude!
he is a good teacher but not a nice guy, if u r chinese student, man bless u,cuz he is not very nice to chinese. one of my friend asked him a question he said:" u should go back to kindergarten!" unbelieveablly mean and rude!

he sucks
He is a very good professor and he makes lots of jokes in class. All his lectures were clear and concise. Final is definately more difficult than the midterm even though he says people do better on the final. He could some what of an ass at times.
I loved this prof..he is very helpful
Who says 207 is a hard course? I totally do not think so. If you did good on math 157 and econ 103, you will ace this course. Prof is very informative and sometimes he makes fun in the lecture. 8 30 in the morning, but no choice you guys since he is the only one teaching this course. I dont know why he does this in the morthing tho. it was so painf
Bus 207 with Matadeen is not a fun class. He makes occational jokes which are amusing, but anyone that actually pays attention to how he acts can see that he is not interested in how well students are doing. He will only help you if you need clarification. If you work on a problem for 5 hours and dont understand it he will not help you.
One of the most intelligent professors in Business! students taking with him will learn more than just materials from the textbook, he can really broaden students' perspective! Class is fun! lots of examples! I recommend all good student wanting to be better should take class with Professor Matadeen!
I like the guy. He is funny and he knows he can teach... so I was never bored in his class. Someone mentioned that choise about the cases was unfair - I say you are just stupid! The idea is STRATEGY and god knows I loved the fact that I didn't have to write the second case! Allan is all around cool guy, friendly and nice to talk to. Keep it up Alla
He sometimes give insults to students who answer wrong or ask things that he assumes we already know. He's, however, very clear on his lectures and everything appears in assignments and exams are from what he teaches in class-- his in class examples are really useful. Textbook isn't useful; follow his lectures.
clear lectures and notes, but long super challenging exams.. the exams r like very different from what we have learned.. you can never think what he thinks. Not helpful in assignments, go find ur TA..
If you never looked at him during lecture you would think it was an automated voice recording. Basically you should swallow as much as you can and puke it out when its time. Somewhere within the chunks should be the right answer BUT just hope the right ones didn't go out the other end. ABC soup anyone?
I would definitely recommend Matadeen for this course. He is interesting and a great professor. His marking is fair and makes reasonable demands. He will tell you how to do well in the course and exactly follows through with what he says. He's pretty funny too.
This guy is quite the character. Go to lecture and tutorials always. He isnt very helpful so always see the TA's (Paul is very good). MT isnt bad, but the final is hard. In the 2nd half of the course he expects to you miraculously learn things that arnt in lectures or the text so see the TA. Do the assignments BY YOURSELF & memorize each question.
Very mean and condescending....acts nice in front of everybody but enjoys putting people down...should really be reported for degrading comments he makes to students
He is the best prof ever!
While the course content isn't easy - the professor is very good. He shows interest in the subject and cracks little jokes to keep it entertaining. The key is you HAVE to do the assignments and sample exams. He is available for help - very approachable- and will give extensions if you need them! Plus he is pretty hot (like a brown george clooney!)
Go to the lectures and do the assignments by YOURSELF. The book is useless, exam q's come right out of the notes. exams are tough b/c of the true and false so do perfect on the written (which isnt hard if you have done the assignments and corrected your mistakes) and u will do fine in the class
Notes are straight forward but you have to put more effort into just what he gives in class with assignments ....and tends to be nice to students he likes and hates you with a passion if he doesn't like you....T/F is tricky
No Comments
Cool prof, and he is funny too.haha! it's not a hard course if u take it seriously. Do the assignments by urself and understand them, you will be more than just fine...=)
I can totally see the favourism going on in the classroom if he was a high-school teacher.
A clear speaking teacher! His words are slow and easy to catch! Do all assignments and redo them not just for tutorial marks, but for doing well on the exam as the exam questions are fairly similar to the ones assigned. Oh ..... and u'll just love his accents ("AvaiLAble" = "AvEIlible") LoL!
He is a pretty cool guy, gives very interesting lectures, just do the assignment but don't do them 365 times, if u get it, u get it, if u don't, go get help. If you do well in Math 157 and Econ 103 you'll ace this course, i got A+ in math 157 and econ 105, and i got the same for this course. Good prof
Allan is the best prof I've ever had!!! He knows the stuff, and makes everything very clear. If you go to the lecture, and do all the assignments by YOURSELF, you'll do really well ;) Oh, but his exams are little tough though. BUT, again, if you do the assignments, it won't be any problem!
All right, I guess. A lecture can be a bit tedious, however.
The class is hard in general but Allan does a very good job explaining the material. He makes everything very clear and easy to understand. Be sure to spend a lot of time doing the homework and practice questions to prepare for exams because they are quite tough. And you don't want to miss ANY of his lectures! Recommend taking 207 with him!
Midterm is similar to the samples. The final exam had a couple of odd questions but was overall very doable. To do well in this course you must read over and understand his lecture notes & know how to do the assignments & why certain operations are being performed. He's very approachable so ask him questions if you don't get the material.
Very Clear Prof, go to his class and do the assignments yourself you should get an A
he is good
Allan's notes are quite clear, and as the term went on he did more assignment-type questions. Tutorials helped in completing upcoming and correcting past assignments. After killing us on the midterm, the final consisted of questions VERY similar to the notes/assignments. If you understand the assignments, you should do relatively well on the exams.
The majority of his lectures are on concepts, he doesn't go over examples very often. If your good at math and calculus you'll do fine. If not, get help from your TA!!
he's cool and humorous but really serious with teaching. the key to get a good mark is that you should do all the assinments BY YOURSELF!!!more importatly, you should really know why you do those questions that way!!!his notes is really clear, no needs to read textbook unless he mentions. overall, highly recommended.
If u take his class, u better do ALL his assignments. And if u don't understand them, go to him for help cuz he's very helpful. His notes pretty much explain everything. The MT was alrite but watch out for the final, it was freakin hard.
He can teach, but this course is still really hard! Assignments were alright, but MT was hard... & FINAL was VERY HARD.
Good Teacher. Very informarmative. Can anyone tell me if his assigments come from the textbook? Dont want to buy text. Much appreciated
He is enthusiastic but extremely demanding of students...5 essays ...1 due/week, tests were hard and was not clear of what we would be tested on. He did not have a set syllabus and therefore was confusing on what we were doing in the coming week. Made fun immigrants that enter Canada who cant speak English properly well neither could he.
His lecture notes are clear and easy to understand. But this only covers up the real difficulties of this course. His assignments are on a completely different level. I know some profs don't want you to just spit out what they talk about during lecture but the questions he puts on his assignments are nearly impossible to do.
To be fair, he teaches the course but not exceptionally well. If you're in his tutorial BE WARE! He'll walk around harassing everybody and acting like a pompous jerk.
Awesome prof with a smug attitude, great wisecracks, and a cool accent. This course tests your ability to understand (rather than to memorize) the implications of economic concepts.
I hate economics, I hate math, I thought I would hate this class... But I loved it, all thanks to this man. He's wisecracks kept me laughing, his accent was fabulous -- my friends and I have a Matadeen dictionary ay-vel-lay-bel ;)
The course is........ Midterm is fair but final reallyreally hard!
Not my favourite prof but this man really knows the staff he presents in lectures....clear and well organized. Dont have to study a lot, but make sure u truly understand all assignments and notes. My MD is just above average, but my final is better. I got A in the end. I think if u show the improvement in final, he would give u bonus.
anyone realize that the 2 comments below are pretty much the same but worded abit differentley? I wonder who might of wrote such a comment?(matadeen obviously). this class is GPA KILLER, avoid him at all costs
This professor comes off as disrespectful. He often mocks the Arts program. History majors are also insulted by stating that students are better off not attending university at all. Matadeen lacks imagination and passion. Don't take classes with him if you're an Arts major. Moreover, he goes over material much too fast and isn't all that clear.
He's the first prof to ever be so vocal about losing his hair so don't irritate him about his balding. He also gets jealous of people with hair that's better than his...guess he's just going through a mid life crisis.
Matadeen is a god. If you take good notes in lecture and do the assignments on your own (as he specifies several times), you will do perfectly fine. You won't need to read the ridiculously expensive textbook unless you want more clarification on graphs, terms, etc. He's awesomely witty and makes a point of burning groups of people in every lecture.
a lot of jokes in lectures. very interesting. He is nice, but never ask questions which has been tought in tutorial in his office hour. I never use my textbook, his notes is specific. all assignments are very important!! do it carefully.
Great Prof. All his lectures + tutorials are VERY informative, make sure you attend both. Allan is a very funny guy, his lectures go by fast but his examples are very clear. Downside: material is a bit hard. Upside: the average is pretty low, so if you get above average (usually 30-40s) you'll do fine because the class is curved.
This prof told us on the first day that he fails 18% of the class automatically. I did not understand the class material at all but after some help from a tutor it all started to make sense. Didn't use the text at all, except for a few assignment questions. Attendance is pretty much mandatory because he doesn't post slides or lecture notes.
I had Matadeen for 2 courses a couple years ago at Douglas. Overall, I thought he was a great prof. Don't let the hardass routine the first week fool you. He's actually a very reasonable guy. He said he was going to write a cumulative final if anyone's phones went off. Mine went off 1st day but he never did. His notes are also extremely helpful.
allan is a funny guy, he has a very clear clarification, just do all the assignments and truly understand his notes, life would be much easier. Overall, i don't agree the criticism about him. He has a really good understanding and experiance for teaching this course!
If you're not a math whiz like myself, I would consider taking this course with another prof. His teaching style is very concise. He moves fast. Half the notes in class were pretty much useless towards the exams/homework-the only helpful class notes were the examples. Exams are pretty much the assignment questions-but it's not as easy as it sounds.
He is one of the worst professor I have ever been taught by and it doesn't help that his handwriting is ineligible. Plus his notes go all over the place plus if you have your tutorial with him, he will try to bully you if you don't know the right answer. His exams are super hard and the assignments are easy. My advice is avoid THIS GUY AT ALL COSTS
I know many students don't like him, but please you need to know that this this prof demands much less than other 207 prof (no need to read the textbook and do any extra questions). All you need to do is attending every class and sitting in the first row and taking all the notes, and doing and understanding your homework by yourself, u'd get an A
This was definitely the easiest Bus class I've ever taken. Some people hate Matadeen, but they just don't get his humor. He's sarcastic, offensive and bullying at times, but he's just trying to be funny. He's actually super nice. One important thing though: PLAY BALL. You're not going to agree with him on everything, just pretend you do!
One of the few profs that can keep your attention for 3 hours. Good teacher, but lack of online notes, little use of the textbook, and no tutorial made this class exceptionally hard. If you didn't learn it in lecture, good luck learning it outside of class. Try and take it with another prof, if possible.
Allan is a funny guy. He's one of the few teachers that can make you laugh, learn and enjoy his class at the same time. You can skip his classes, but I advise not to. What he teaches in class will make your life very very easy when doing the assignments, because of his clear explanation and well-organized notes. If he's teaching, take his course!
Do not skip his lectures! He is good, but this course is hard. I guess the average mark of final exam is no more than 60. Thank goodness it is curved, and I get an A-.
Before I took 207, I'd heard rumors that Allan was a GPA killer. But I decided to stay in his class after the first lecture. What a humorous guy! Believe it or not, I got full mark in his final. Allan could be a GPA booster, if u get all his jokes in class.
Humorous guy. Great lecture! The examples from real life is very helpful and interesting.
Great prof. Notes are little mass. So do not skip the cls. You will enjoy it !
A very nice prof makes you laugh in the class all the time. His final is hard even though he tells its not,if you do the weekly assingment you will do well in the mid term and can aim for a good grade.
Avoid him at all costs; assignments are easy, but the tests aren't. Your GPA will fall.
Assignments were fair; tricky sometimes, but the TA's were extremely helpful so it was ok. The midterm was like assignments, final wasn't related at all. He's funny but condescending when you ask a question in class. The textbook was useless for studying, but necessary for assignments. Attending lecture is mandatory for a good grade.
I really don't understand anyone who likes Allan's class. Allan is a funny guy, but funny does not equal easy or fun in anyway. This course is brutal and as someone mentioned previously: good luck learning the concepts outside of lecture. If you didn't understand it in lecture you probably won't ever understand it. Take BUS 207 with another prof.
I would say midterm is like assignments. Final is a mission impossible as he said. Basically, worst professor ever and he always think he is funny LOL
Best.......... hha because I got A. He give us opportunity to get good mark even thought you fail in the midterm or assignment. TO be honest the course is hard but the prof is nice.
This prof thinks he's funny, when he's not. Very rude, and when students ask questions, he answers them as if you should have already known. His exams and final are extremely hard, and his assignments are easy, overall bad prof, avoid at all costs
I believe he is a good and experienced instructor. Makes a lot of jokes to keep audience interested, and assigns fair amount of homework. Always listen to what he's emphasizing on the lecture and do your homework on your own! Be an honest student, then you will find his class very rewarding!
This class is really hard but the professor is great. You really have to take the time to understanding the lecture notes as well as the assignments and examples. The final exam is not at all impossible like people say. I studied really hard for one day and got 75%. However, if you are not good at math I would suggest another professor.
Finally a prof that doesn't surprise you on exams. Just like he said, if you can do the homework, you can do the exams. He has an extremely dry humour and keeps the class laughing at all times. The midterm was so straight forward, but the final was definitely more challenging. If you want someone who preaches "you see what you get" he's the man.
The course is difficult. Matadeen does not seem interested in helping students who come to his office hours.
His tests and exams are not too difficult. His lectures are sometimes interesting. The only big problem is that he is not helpful or willing to help his students. Also the textbook is only for doing assignment.
He is a nice professor, explains his lectures well and keeps it interesting with random jokes. When I took Bus 207 with him all our notes were taken by hand and no online notes were posted, so skipping class was not an option. The midterm and final were based on assignment questions, so if you did poorly on those make sure to see him or the TA.
Others are fine, but in his final there will be some questions that are super tricky and unexpected. Be sure to review his in class note.
Allan will respect you if you take the material seriously. I found him very willing to help with any material I had trouble understanding. His courses are structured to allow you time to learn the mindset behind economics and make a few mistakes along the way, but still achieve a good final grade. Pay attention and tests are straightforward.
This class I feel asleep in the first 10 minutes, you have to right all of his notes dwon by hand. His jokes are not funny at times sexist. However his exams and assigmnets are all fair if you understand them up and down you will get above average.
If you are having a hard time to fall asleep at night, have no fear because Allan can make you fall asleep instantly. I was never at any point in class interested at what he had to say. However, the midterm and exam are very fair if you manage to stay awake and listen to him. MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENT FOR THE Midterm. His jokes are sexist
A good professor in total. Assignments and simple midterm are very important, so try to do and understand all of them.
His assignments are challenging (even the TAs did not know how to do some of the questions). Lectures are dry, but you need the notes for the exams. Midterm and final were fair and mostly math based. Professor Matadeen seems to be condescending at times when students asked questions in class. Take this course if you are good at math!
Honestly, Allan is by far the WORST professor ive ever had. SFU PLEASE hire profs who actually teach course material that will be on the exams so that I am able to actually have a chance at succeeding in the course. Do yourself as well as your GPA a huge favour and DO NOT take 207 with Allan.
Go to class, write down everything he says. If you're decent at math, the course is pretty straight forward. The assignments and exams are essentially the same in terms of difficulty and material. Make sure you do every assignment by yourself as much as you can. The lectures and exams are 90% related, ignore reviews that state otherwise.
Allan is a great prof. You need to attend all his lectures to take notes and the homework is really important cuz they contain very similar questions showed in mt and final. Just focus on lectures and do exercises you will get desired grade.
Blatantly lied about what would be on the final. Said that it would be the same as assignments and practice exams but it wasn't even close. Don't take it with him.
Was enjoying this class up until the final. Lectures were semi-enjoyable and I was able to get an above average grade on the midterm(which was very similar to the assignments/practice exams). Professor told the class that the final would be similar to the assignments, but it wasn't even close. Spent multiple days studying for nothing.
This class throws me right back to Math 157. I did well on assignments, and on the midterm, but just wrote his final and it was absolutely the hardest exam I've ever written. It was a complete curve ball and he did not prepare us whatsoever. It was composed of questions he never showed us before. What an awful class, and Allan is mediocre at best.
The final was extremely hard. Not from the assignments. It was all theory based way too hard. I've never written such a hard final.
All I can say is that I have so much respect for the people who'll get an A in this class.
Mislead the entire class regarding the content of the final exam. I studied the assignments and practice midterm for weeks, and for absolutely no reason. I have no idea why he would do something like that.
Blink in class? You'll get lost in the assignments. Rely on homework answer keys from last term? Expect a failing midterm. Believe in Alan when he says the final will just be like the assignments? Get ready to stare into nothingness and wonder where everything started going downhill during the exam. ;)
The final was insanely difficult in comparison to the midterm. Kind of a trap since the midterm was "just like the assignments". Enjoyed his lectures, but most of the question on final was very different from assignments.
The way Allan thought this course was useless. The whole course is just based on solving direct questions and not much of understanding. The assignments were fine, but the final was very different from what he thought us. It seems like he just took an old final exam and gave it to us.
Best instructor EVER!! Finally a real teacher who has a fantastic sense of humour.
I scored very poorly on the midterm, but worked very hard to prep for the final exam - redoing assignments and understanding concepts and passing the course. Allan is a great personality but the course is very demanding. Attend EVERY lecture!
Homework average is super darn high, and averages for exams are usually low. Follow his advice and do the assignments over and over again. Don't bother reading from the textbook, his T/F or MC questions come from stuff he mentions in lectures that he doesn't necessarily get you to write down. Funny guy, not as bad as everyone makes him to be.
Surprisingly ended up being one of my favorite business professors as he makes a dry course more interesting with anecdotes and comedy. The only complaint I would have is that some of his in-class examples do not apply to the weekly assignments leaving you to figure it out by yourself or go to a TA, who aren't very helpful.
teaches you to understand material, not to memorize it. If you like logic and math (leaning more towards finance) you'll probably love this class. Textbook use is minimal, only for a few easy questions on the homework. if you wanna save money split a textbook between you and a few friends. Use his notes and assignments to study.
Class attendance in necessary as he does handwritten notes; his style of notes are very sporadic so when you are reviewing for exams it's difficult to understand what is going on. The textbook was only necessary for assignment questions but not necessarily for course content.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS PLEASE AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. This guy actually does not teach. He puts in zero effort in this class and doesn't have any lecture slides or any secondary sources we can refer off of. Basically, he expects us to memorize every thing that comes out of his mouth. This guy is one of the most arrogant professors I have ever had.
I have zero respect for this bald guy. He does very minimal to provide secondary sources to help his students learn. If you go to his lectures, he will go at a fast pace and not allow his students to write down the materials. The worst part is that there are no lecture slides or notes. So, this class tests you on the things he says and thats it.
I wish I would have done better but thats on me. This is an amazing professor. He is great at teaching and he's hilarious. If you do your assignments on your own you will not have any issues with the midterm nor the final. All I will say is: if you do as he says, you'll succeed.
Overall, He was a alright professor who teaches you to understand the material. But when it comes to the exams, the questions are similar to the assignments, but more harder and trickier to solve. I did not buy a textbook and just used my friends. The assignments and notes are the only things you should focus on when studying for exams.
When you walk into Allan's class, you do not realize the journey you are about to undergo. Upon entering the arena, Allan's warm and welcoming nature provides an air of comfort that makes students feel at home. He presents economics in a way that will make you laugh, learn, and cry tears of joy. A remarkable man, the very best beedie has to offer.
Allan is by far the best prof ever! Take 207 with him only! He has a simple approach, come to class, focus for 3 hrs, go home do the assignments, and you'll be fine. No pre-readings, no quizzes. All assignments are practice questions. and his exams are based off assignments. I wish other classes were like this. pay attention to his notes.
Didn't like the fact that he doesn't use powerpoint, he is a tough grader too
Hard to work with him. He did not have any material ( no slide, no practice). His tests so difficult with true/false question (explain). I would like to avoid him if you want to pass or save your money. Gook luck!
This was the most unreasonable course I've ever taken. I went to both the TA and profs office hours, redid his assignments a billion times, and spent an entire week studying for the final. The prof is condescending when you ask him questions, and I genuinelly feel that he takes pleasure in seeing students fail. Not qualified to teach.
Yo would love this class if you get close to him. BUS 207 depeneds on calculas. it taks time, but in general, loved Allan and my exerince with him, looking forward to take BUS 478 as soon as he ofered the course.
This course was the most confusing course I've taken at SFU, not because of the content because of Allan and his unorthodox teaching methods. He does not use nor post any lecture slides and you have to write everything down whilst in class, imagine writing for 3 hours straight. His notes are scattered overall don't take him take anyone else!!!!!!!!
The teacher is stuck in the prehistoric age dry class and even drier teaching style.
This teacher is the ABSOLUTE worst teacher I've taken in my 3 years post-graduate career.
For the midterm, we are given 2 hours. The class is 3 hours long. The midterm is as long as finals for some class and we are given 3 hours for those. Literally 95% of the class was there till the end because the test was too long. And all notes are by paper no lecture slides which make focusing on the lecture so hard for 3 hours. Teacher is stuck
Professor is such a boomer that he doesn't utilize PowerPoint slides at all. Everything is in person and nothing is online. When you submit for weekly homework, you have to show up in person to submit. Big unlucky for those that take a 8:30AM class with him. Lectures are 3 hours and are as dry as the desert without water. TEXTBOOK MANDATORY.
It's 1 hour and 12 mins past the time to start the final exam online during this pandemic and this unicorn still has not figured out how to use technology! This alien is hilarious. But he is also a sneaky prof -- Expect midterm and final questions that come from left field. Still waiting!
If you have another choice, dont choose him.
He is very slow during lectures. His assignments are very lengthy and very different than what he teaches in class.
absolute snail at giving lectures. A snooze fest, on god. No feed back on the assignments. Please, don't take this mans class.
Not sure how he does in-person but 100% would not recommend taking his online class. He obviously has a hard time adapting to the new technology and still using the same evaluation/grading/teaching method even when EVERYTHING is different. Probably the most unorganized and irresponsible exam experience I ever had...
Allan is a good guy and is funny. Pretty mediocre teacher, he gets the material across okay but nothing special. His TAs were quite annoying though, never replying to emails and creating confusion right before exams which did not help the stress level. Assignments and exam questions were also marked extremely hard.
Probably the worst prof I've had at SFU. Avoid at all costs. Tests are nothing like assignments, lectures are impossible to follow because he talks so slow.
Do not take this course with this professor. The material is already difficult and his teaching style makes the course exponentially more difficult. The first half of the semester was a lot harder than the second half. Midterm and final exam questions were nothing like the assignment questions. Weekly assignments require a lot of effort.
I think the reason of a lot of people wanna give him a bad rating is because the material in course is already hard enough, which cant be avoided no matter who is teaching you. I do think Allan is good, no textbook required, just come to his class and make notes of what he said and focus on weekly assignments which are similar to exams
I took a total of four(4) classes with Allan at SFU and Douglas. He is brilliant, and yes traditional. Avoid if you have a short attention span and just want "nice". You must attend class, take notes and work. Earn his respect and he will respect you. Exams are different than quizzes, forcing you to think Critically. Take him if you want to LEARN.
Brilliant professor who expects engagement. Take detailed notes, attend class, and work hard - the challenging exams force critical thinking. Unstuckstudy AI was a great study aid alongside the free textbook.
