Professor Pinhas made it very clear that he did not want to spend his time being in class with students. He frequently made judgmental comments on the abilities of students, to the point where I did not go to his office hours when I needed help for fear of being criticized. He gives practice problems but does not give a key, so they barely help
You don't want to take this class as non-lab natural science class for your Business degree (I took intro to Forensic btw). The lessons are unorganized and half of the questions in the tests are barely covered or even mentioned. I study so much for this class just to get a C like most of the students in this class.
Tough grader, negative remarks to students not a good man.
Literally learned nothing from his lectures. He does not take attendance you'd honestly do better to learn the material on your own through online videos, recitation and SI sessions. Seriously, don't waste your time showing up to his 8 AM lecture.
yo, yoooooooooooo. dude is too sarcastic, the way he gives us material for notes is he handwrites them and puts them on a projector so if you don't show up for class good luck. He asks you to submit questions you have about the test but when it comes time to answer the questions proposed by the students he says "just know it" YOOOOOOOOOOOOO
He is literally one of the worst professors I have ever had. Someone will ask a question and he responds with a smart remark... He has certain long directions for his stupid exams and you get multiple points taken off for what you do not do. He is super disrespectful and not approachable!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE FORENSICS WITH HIM.
I don't really know why people don't like him, he's pretty chill. He might give some silly answers to any questions but if you get offended by it then you're the one at fault. If you show up to class and pay attention, you'll pass the class. He's very test heavy which is a downfall to his class. He has silly methods, but not as bad as people say.
He is probably the worst professor I have ever had. He is disrespectful to the students and mumbles rude remarks under his breath if he finds your question stupid. He is very unapproachable and intimidating. I 100% do not recommend any of his classes unless you want to rip all of your hair out.
You basically have to teach yourself everything because he is very scattered and does not explain problems thoroughly. His tests are very hard to do well on and he is not very approachable. Would not recommend taking him if you want to do well in o chem.
He doesnt really teach. All he does is stand up at the front of the lecture hall and scribble notes on a paper thats shown through a document camera and is like theres that and moves on. What he tests on is more complex than the problems shown in class. Seemingly no communication between TAs. The tests are so hard too because theres no mc.
Went into this class with low expectations after hearing some negative things about Pinhas. Everything I heard was so wrong though. I feel he is a great professor who adds humor and sarcasm to the lectures which make them pass a bit quicker. He readily prepares you for exams oftentimes giving exam questions. Maybe 20 minutes of homework a week.
Pinhas is probably a certified genius; he went to Cornell then Yale to learn chem. As such, he struggles to find sympathy for students who slack - some of his responses to questions are brash and I would rank 3/10 on approachability. But, he does care, and shows it by giving extra credit and going over probs in class VERY similar to test questions.
I took ochem during the semester that was cut short by coronavirus. he turned our hour and 20 min lectures into 15 min videos. His "lectures" in both cases were poorly drawn reactions with little explanation, and some bad attitude if you asked questions. if you're stuck with him, attend SI; you'll be grateful someone can actually explain things.
Dr. Pinhas always helped me when I needed help understanding material outside of class. His office hours were relatively beneficial, but lectures weren't always so. I found it hard to follow his notes from class sometimes, and would've better appreciated a powerpoint or printed notes.
During lecture he writes his notes on a piece of paper and puts them up on a projector. The notes are scattered and hard to follow. He does not explain the problems thoroughly. Honestly its not even worth going to the lecture and you would be better off going to SI sessions and using online resources.
His exams are difficult to do good on since they are all complex open response questions with multiple parts to them. I almost never finish all of them in time and lose credit for parts not answered. The exams are very different from the practice problems and homework. He is also full of himself and is not approachable in the slightest.
Dr. Pinhas isnt approachable. If you email him, dont expect a direct response. Extremely vague. Lectures consist of him scribbling on paper & expecting you to know it immediately. Encourages you to ask questions but when you do, isnt very kind about it/wont be direct. The course was all self-study after the format changed due to covid.
Tests are difficult with complex multi-part questions. He has no sympathy for students and is very brash. The first exam average was a 35 and he didn't blink an eye. The grade is pretty much all test, but not nearly enough time is given to complete the test.
He is bad at teaching, bad at answering emails, bad at making mock exams and actual exams, and bad at helping students. Don't waste your time with this prof.
He is arrogant and rude while not being so bright himself. Every mock exam given is short and hardly helps you with the actual exams. The actual exams are normally a handful of multiple part questions. They are very difficult and most people find they are not given enough time
Truly the worst professor I've ever had at UC. Doesn't care about his students at all, rude in emails, and has the messiest and hardest to follow lectures ever. I stopped watching lectures eventually and solely relied on youtube and external sources to understand this class. Avoid taking this class at all costs.
Unprofessional. Doesn't seem to care for his students and their confusion from the lack of communication in class. Doesn't seem to know how to work canvas. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Avoid at all costs. He has illegible handwriting, but his lectures are just 90 minutes of him scribbling down examples. The tests are 7 multi-part Q's and are hard to complete within the allotted time. Pinhas is rude when you email him, and shows almost no respect for his students. He's an awful professor with a bad attitude.
Worst professor I've had so far. I had to teach myself everything for this class. Most of your grade will be based on the tests, which are difficult to do well on and even more difficult to complete with the amount of time given. Whatever you do, avoid at all costs.
Worst professor ive ever had at UC. Not kind at all even though he encourages you to ask questions. When you do, he makes you feel stupid. Does not grade fairly. Never take this class.
Worst professor I have ever had. Does not care for his students at all. Responds to emails without answering questions and degrading the student for asking a question. His lectures are 90 minutes of him mumbling and writing illegibly. Should not be allowed to teach another class. Avoid at all costs.
Had I not already taken and passed AP Chem in high school, this class would have been horrible. Lectures were just him writing on a notepad with a pen under a projector. Luckily, I had a lot of background info going in, and the asynchronous lectures provided were actually very helpful. Also, barely any homework was nice.
Finishing my third year and this is the hardest class I have ever taken. Has absolutely no sympathy for of his students. His tests look almost nothing like what you learn in class, they are insanely harder than the problems you go over in lecture. Mumbles and scribbles notes on a projector for lecture. Do yourself a favor and avoid this professor.
Spent most of lecture going on rants
I don't really have a problem with Pinhas himself, you can tell he is a very smart person and usually that does not translate into being very personable but whatever. My issue comes when he teaches almost nothing and then expects us to just know everything. He is a terrible professor and I learn more from YouTube than I do from his lectures.
Probably one of the worst professors/ teachers I have ever had in my whole school career. He does not care about students and will not hesitate to fail a whole class. Everything in his class is insanely hard and you are not likely to pass no matter how much time and effort you put into it. I would spend at LEAST 15 hours a week on this class alone.
Dr. Pinhas knows his stuff, and sometimes he is unsure what students know or do not know. But, he is always willing to answer questions and tries his best to make the topics understandable. Homework and recitation are essentially free points and make up 1/6 of your grade. Test questions are based on the book problems.
He's not a bad person but too smart for a professor. If given a choice, pick a different prof. He can't teach and he's rude. The good reviews are from kids who like/are good at chem. Class average on test was 48, 51, 47. Tests are everything and homework is worth 10 points. Only 600 pts for entire semester.
Pinhas is easily the worst professor I have ever had in my college career. Exams are 500/600 points in the class with 200 just for the final itself. DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ANY COST. He showed us his exam averages every year steeply dropping every year since 2017 our averages were always below 50%, as I stated again DO NOT TAKE HIM.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!! I have had some bad teachers/professors, but I did not even know it could get THIS bad. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF IT IS POSSIBLE. He assumes that everyone knows what he knows, and he is a terrible teacher. He just writes problems down and hopes you understand what he is talking about. Averages for exams were always below 50.
For reference, I had a 4.0 before this class and got all As in my other classes this semester but finished with a C+. All the other reviews are true. If you think you can just work harder- no I tried that. Worst professor Ive ever had and I do not say that lightly. If you would like to feel stupid every day for not having an ochem PhD - take.
One of the worst learning experiences I've ever had, he teaches an 8 A.M but records zero lectures, his PowerPoints are uploaded but do not contain descriptions so they cant be studied. he provides old exams to study, just without the answer keys. so they can't be studied outside of the book, I have zero usable study material. I hate this class.
Honestly I have very little to say about Pinhas. He was nice enough when I asked him things outside of class, and I'm sure he's a great guy, but he is a truly awful lecturer. No lecture slides, no lesson plan, it felt like he basically just rambled at us for an hour and a half and scribbled notes down on the back of scratch paper for us to follow.
Quite literally the worst human I have ever encountered. So rude, doesn’t use canvas, I’m taking a very easy course and he’s making it hard.
Easily the worst chemistry professor. He rambles in lectures and makes no sense, but acts surprised when the exam averages were in the 40s. The TAs also were terrible and did not know what was going on. Lectures had no structure and exams were nothing like in class. The SI sessions and SI mock exams were the only thing causing me not to retake.
He's awful. Don't take him unless you've no option left. He is the worst professor one could ever be!
This guy gets way too much hate. He moves very quickly, but if you ask a question, he will do his best to answer it. If you just put in a little bit of extra work, you will do completely fine. Pinhas is also quite hilarious and he curves the class at the end of the year.
His lectures are just him writing random things down and talking really fast, he makes you feel dumb if you ask a question in class. SI sessions and outside resources are the only reason I did okay in this class
Allan Pinhas is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He scribbles on blank paper and talks about nothing helpful. I am convinced he is delusional. Lecture is optional but he does not post any powerpoints or recordings so you need to go. The class grade is determined by the exams so study up and go to SI.
He teaches fine. Does not go into depth about why things happen but does show you everything you'll have to know. If you can get your hands on old exams for this course, you are golden. Just memorize the format and what types of questions that will be asked you can get an A easily. DO NOT take this course with Lieberman!!
Pinhas is very old school, PowerPoints and overhead projector stuff. Rushes through material at an insane pace, and stuff he does take time to explain he does so poorly. Some nice things are he does do examples and makes some effort to listen. Your best shot is to learn from the book and go to reci. Test average ~50, and that's your entire grade.
The worst professor I have ever had. The only way I learned/survived this course is by going to SI. Your exams make up 83.3% of your overall grade, but with averages in the 40s, it's a challenge to do good. He barely teaches and scribbles chicken scratch when doing a rare example. Moves extremely fast and doesn't go much in depth, making SI needed.
He is very rude and would not help you if he is not in the mood. His classes are not helpful at all and when you go to him for questions he acts like you should know everything.
Do not take organic chemistry from Allan Pinhas if possible. He is a terrible teacher who hates teaching; he only does it because it is required for his research through UC (he expressed his hate for teaching many times). Not only is he bad at explaining chemistry, but he is very rude and disrespectful and does not care about his students.
I did very well in class but it wasn't due to Pinhas AT ALL. Classes would never make any sense and a waste of time. After the first exam, I stopped going to class. I used SI and online videos. FIND OLD EXAMS! He uses the SAME format. I would always get scared he would change format but they were always the same-ish. He is probably the best option
I took this class and had to withdraw. I was out of class due to illness and there were no lecture notes to help me catch up. Recitation was no help either. I took this class again at a different university and got an A+. It wasn't easy but having structured lessons and accessible office hours goes a long way (something Pinhas doesn't have)
Good person? Sure. Good professor? Absolutely not. His lectures are him just scribbling on a piece of paper in chicken scratch. No powerpoint slides and no recordings. Best advice? Do the extra credit at the beginning of the semester, go to SI, get old exams, memorize everything, and pray. There's people that get A's, so it's not impossible :)
He barely taught anything in lecture. The only way I was able to pass was by going to SI sessions and watching YouTube videos on my own time. The SI sessions had mock exams with questions taken from previous exams that often showed up on an actual exam so that was helpful since he often reuses old exams. I do not recommend taking his class at all
Lectures aren't recorded and he spends the entire time writing on a paper and projecting it. Attendance is a must if you want to learn any reactions. SI was a big help in getting more time with the material. Over 80% of your final grade is based off 4 exam you take throughout the year so they can make or break your semester.
Honestly, if I had not studied the course material in high school before taking this class I probably would not have done as well. He speeds through the lecture content (and there is a LOT of lecture content) and is also not the greatest sometimes at explaining concepts to students. A benefit unlike 2040 is that there are ppts to use for self-study
A lot of people do not like and I can not see why, I enjoyed my time in his class and learned a lot. I think he gets a lot of hate for no reason.
Professor Pinhas had no emotions to the concerns regarding the students, neither would he take any complaints seriously in the class. His teaching styles were not clear to understand any concept, neither were the TA's helpful to go over the content covered in the classes.
Pretty unorganized and can be unclear on assignments. Lectures are so boring and exams are ridiculously hard. Doesn't use information from lectures on exams. Has random assignments where you get participation points so that kind of helps your grade. He's alright for intro to forensics. Make sure to read syllabus.
Pinhas is an okay professor. He is a tough grader and does not accept late assignments. Also, your grade is determined by exams and other assignments don't really help bring your grade up. Our class used a textbook he wrote, and a lot of the exam questions were from the textbook but not lectures.
Please, if you're reading this, don't take this class. Maybe he's knowledgeable in his field, but I wouldn't know, as he spends most of the class being condescending. The average for the final project was 60%, and the highest was only 80%. When students tried to ask questions about the project, he was unwilling to help. Save yourself the stress!!!
- Dr. Pinhas covers material very quickly which it makes it hard to keep up. - He is great about answering questions. - Students with less experience in chemistry will struggle to learn the concepts and keep up with the pace of his class. - Dr. Pinhas is not very clear about what is important for students to know, so write down everything you can.
Cincy wont fire him even tho I cried to him about my failing grade after attending every recitation, lecture, SI and student tutoring offered where he laughed in my face during office hours. Take this class if you don't want to graduate and don't care about your mental health.
If you've taken General Chemistry with him in the past, it's the same kind of setup except there are no ppts to self study from. Imperative to show up to lectures AND SI sessions in order to understand what's going on and not fall behind. HW and recitations make up like 1/6th of your grade the rest is from exams so study hard for those.
Do not take this class or any class with this professor. He asks that you share constructive feedback on his teaching but will spend the whole class trying to prove you wrong. So condescending---he will mutter things under his breath to you while you're presenting. Save yourself the trouble and skip over this course.
He lectures a lot, which is to be expected. He is ok at giving a good intro to the material, but I recommend watching some videos online to help reinforce what you learned in-class. He offers some extra credit and the homework is easy. He has a review session before each exam and definitely look over exam prep materials provided by him or the SI.
Y'all let me tell you how it is. This man stands in front of the classroom and does problems the entire class which I found helpful. I felt lost in the lecture but once you go to SI and learn the material there and look back at the notes from the lecture then the notes make sense. People would ask questions in class and he would answer them.
This is a difficult class. Professor Pinhas is someone who has done this for a long time. He knows exactly what to do in all of his lectures and is never confused. That being said, use lecture as a precursor for SI. I only passed by going to the SI and studying A LOT before every exam. Good luck.
Transfer out to a different professor, he's old and tenured and doesn't actually care about students learning
Though not a good professor, he's great for setting you up for orgo ii and the MCAT. Go to SI if you're struggling and don't be upset with him if you choose not to. Exams are easy, though he's a tough grader. Past exams and SI are the way to go, making the class (not the professor) not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
Extremely bad teacher. Don't take his course at any cost. Not good for students.
He was very hard.
Pinhas knows what he's doing but doesn't teach it well. Go to SI so you know what you're doing and watch videos online before you come. Mock SI exams are similar to the exams so I'd recommend that. It's a tough course
Professor Pinhas doesn't deserve all the hate! If you read the textbook before class, attend lectures, and participate in SI sessions, you'll do well in his class. Those who struggle are usually the ones not putting in the effort and often write negative reviews. Ochem is tough and requires dedication, but if you're committed, you'll be fine!
Proably the worst professor I have ever had. Do not take him if you have other hard classes to take at the same time. He stands at the front of the room, writing on a white piece of paper the entire time. He doesn't use PowerPoints or any sort of notes. IF YOU DO NOT READ THE TEXT BOOK AND GO TO SI, YOU WILL NOT PASS. Save youreself-go to Clermont.
Really nice guy, but this class feels predatory towards students. Grades are primarily from exams, which are written response only. Exams often also look completely different from both the mock exam and the SI review topics. If you're not the strongest test taker you will absolutely fail this class.
had this professor for intro to forensics and got sick a few weeks into the semester; doesn't care if you are sick and still expects you to be in class and tells you to read the syllabus to see what's a valid excused absence. A couple of 10 point assignments dropped my grade and the only way to bring it up was during his tests. Do not take course.
This course is graded heavily on exams which are much more difficult than what is actually taught during lecture. The professor is disorganized in his teaching style and makes the course hard to follow along with. I would recommend taking this class at a different campus if this professor is your only option.
Grades the tests ruthlessly, all open ended questions. Doesn't have any lecture slides and just writes random stuff on a sheet of paper projected on to the screens. SI sessions are the only way I learned any of the material for this course. Needs a new prescription as he can't see past the 5th row of the classroom.
Pinhas is a kind professor, but his lectures are a mess, and the students are often lost. If you learn the material independently, you can do pretty well.
Horrible. Very rude.
Literally the worst class I have ever experienced. He does not care how much work you put into anything and will make you want to end your life. Take Wei Liu!
Absolutely awful. Ur struggling? He tells u you're not studying hard enough (even if ur spending every waking moment doing so). tough graders, exams are awful, he doesn't care about u. he CANNOT teach. DONT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO TELLS U TO TAKE HIM. JUST DONT. avg exam scores were ~40%. i'm a straight A student and feared for my life in his class.
Has no idea how to teach, the recitation quizzes don't at all align with lecture/concepts covered in the class, and he is very cold towards students who have genuine questions. For lecture, he writes a bunch of chicken scratch followed by a practice problem- of which he gives very brief and shallow explanation expecting students to already know it.
I was so traumatized and mad about the class I came back years later just to write this review. Do Not Take it, I am warning you. The average was worse when I took the class than previous years , it was 30 percent.
Here are the main points: 1. All lectures are handwritten. 2. Writes to quickly and his handwriting is horrendous. 3. Glosses over or poorly explains important information. 4. Seems genuinely confused at why his students can't answer his questions. Expect to: - write as fast as possible. - read the book or be confused. - have awkward silences.
He's the reason that I prayed every night that I wouldn't wake up the next morning. Work through the textbook problems because those line up more with his exam questions than the homework. In fact, read the textbook because lecture won't make sense unless you do.
Don't let the reviews scare you, he's a good professor and knows how to teach organic chemistry. I wasn't able to do well in the class until I took him. He's willing to work with students.
Was worried going into this class due to the reviews, but Pinhas was really great. The first exam average was a 40, but by the time we got to our third exam the average was up to an 80. He was literally always available, super knowledgeable, and easy to approach/ask questions. Go to SI (shouts out Sam) and do book problems (they were on the exams)
