A generally nice guy. His tests aren't actually too bad. Chemistry is a hard class and personally it is a manageable subject for me.
This class is really one of the best classes that I've ever taken. Actually, I got an average of 96 for the first two exams which is great since A is from 88. He provide you with a very helpful slides and old exams which really what you need to study from, or that what I've been doing all the time. VERY RECOMMENDED!!!
Lectures are repeatitive and unclear. I was lost the second week and I am still lost. I have gone to numerous tutors and tutoring rooms and have learned more there than in class. I know Chem can be fun, but it is deffinately not now.
In general he is a nice guy, however he is extremely awkward. He tries to help you if he can and is there if you need him. His tests become progressively more difficult and lectures tend to be unclear and incomprehensible. Overall if you are willing to put dedicate lots of time to studying using the book then this is a class for you.
well he is really weird and seems like he enjoys teaching!! a big pushover and doesnt explain things well at all his tests are horrible! one of our class averages was a 44 percent. i did not enjoy the class and it was relaively hard! and this is coming from someone who had an accelerated chem class before! try to avoid this class
Cool guy, especially in office hours. He knows what he is talking about. Sure his lectures are hard but c'mon people, it's chemistry. Chemistry is hard and he makes it as easy as humanly possible. Tests are just like the practice exams. Study.
He's a nice guy. But he's teaching chemistry, and it's not really the type of class that I could get into. Most kids just sat there looking for an offer to play russian roulette. The material was confusing at times and the tests were hard, but I'm sure if you study you'll do fine. I like him overall but the class sucked.
He is new at teaching, and certainly still not improving. Lectures and slides are very unclear, and so is he. Tests are really hard, our class averages progressively got lower (44%). 2 out of 4 tests were graded somewhat fairly. If you are willing to study until your brain is fried, go for it, otherwise get out as fast as you can!
If you took chemistry in high school and had a good teacher you should be fine because this will be review. Otherwise, you may not get his lectures and way of teaching. Take advantage of the study groups if you're struggling and study hard. Many people somplain about this class, but they don't do the provided homework problems!
LEC - 4 tests, 1 final. Easy to understand if you read the book before class. Fat pacced. Final is cumulative. Kinda hard teacher but it's college, it isn't supposed to be like high school. Do the practice questions and you will be fine. LAB- meet once a week, 4 people per one group, lab report due weekly, poster presentation at end of lab
4 test and 1 cumulative final. Labs meet once a week and a report is due weekly. "A" cut off is an 88%. Go to review sessions if you're struggling. Teacher can be very boring but he is always willing to help and answer any questions. Responds well and quickly to emails. He truely cares about his students. Be sure to do the practice exams. They help
Snooze fest
Kind of boring and he sometimes seems like he has no idea what topic he was just on. He is very good at answering questions and making it very clear. You just have to ask!
The "exams" test your cognitive skills, not just your skills on how well you know the subject. You might know everything for the exam BUT the questions are worded tricky. So I have horrible cognitive skills so I was always duped in, and tricked when I answered questions. So be prepared to not "just" know the material but have good cognitive skills
This teacher does a good job of going over material, even though the tests are difficult, they aren't impossible. ALOT of studying outside of class is required to get an A in class. The study sessions help ALOT as well.
Class is extremely boring, I dont think he really cares about the subject. He cant put anything into lamins terms. One thing that is good is that is the grading curve a 64% equals a C which in my opinion is still extemely hard to achieve. It is funny how he gets excited when he gets to show an experiment. I dont recommend him,but who is any better!
He covers too much info in too little of time.
Scruggs is by far the worst teacher ever. His point scale is horrible especially for the online homework; there are 4 tests and 13 different assignments just in LEC. The biggest advice that I would give is that the SAMPLE EXAMS DO NOT CORRELATE WITH THE REAL TESTS- i probably wouldnt even look at them; this class is ridiculously unorganized!
He is a very boring teacher. It took a lot for me to stay awake in his class. His practice tests are super easy and do not reflect the actual test itself at all :( they are worded funny in order to trick you so if you do get him, read through the questions very carefully. But it is really funny how he does get excited over classroom experiments tho
The stuff about sample tests is true, but this class is super curved. Do well in Recitation, Lab, online homework, and show up for quizzes, and you can get an A. I got an A- with a test average of 78. He drops 2 homeworks and 3 in class quizzes, so as long you show up and put in a little bit of effort, this class is not that bad.
This class was hard for me, but professor scruggs is very helpfull and he is always avaiable for extra help. there is ALOT of homework and the tests are pretty hard, if you know what you are doing you will do well, but you must study! all in all the professor was great the class was not my fav!
Dr. Scruggs is a great teacher. He is clear when lecturing and answering questions. His tests have a few tricky problems but they aren't that hard if you pay attention to the examples he does in class and can do the online hw. I got an A mostly because I read the book before each lecture and attended every class.
I didn't take chem in high school so going into his class was extremely difficult. I don't blame him too much because it's chem, but his lectures were confusing and fast paced. The homework assignments were online and they were tricky and I only took one of his tests before withdrawing. The test was tricky as well. He's young and inexperienced.
Lectures are very easy to understand and thorough. Class can be boring, but you can only do so much to make chemistry interesting and Scruggs does his best. Very helpful. You need to do the homework and study for the tests in order to pass. The class is no harder than my high school sophomore chem class, very easy. Great teacher, recommended.
Awful teacher! Dropped it and took Briggs and understood everything! And I took chem in high school! I recommend Briggs over Scruggs ANY DAY!
This class is really not all that hard. All you have to do is put in a little effort in Lab, do the online homework, go to recitation, and attend class. You can pretty much average a D on the test and get a B
YO SCRUGGIES! Scruggs is a really, really good professor. He's an extremely nice person and also wants to help his students. He seems really timid in class which helps because he doesn't treat students like babies like most teachers do. I highly recommend taking his class.
Scruggs was fairly easy.. boring lectures...all it is is the online homework, rec. and lab and if you go to the review sessions before the test you should be good.. most of the tests were curved so even better.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ANYTHING AT ALL!!
Probably one of the better professors that I have had since being at ASU. Extremely helpful outside of class. Doesn't talk down to you when you don't understand something, like a lot of professors do. This class is a lot of work outside of lec. I spent 10+ hours a week on hw in addition to lec, rec, and lab. I averaged a D on the tests and got a A-
Very mellow, great at answering questions. Curved grades, a lot of extra credit. Full course w/ rec and lab is lots of work, but keep up with it and you should learn a LOT and get an A. Exams effectively test understanding, so pay attention and do the homework YOURSELF. Among the better prof's I've had at ASU, would def take another class w/ him.
Okay. I honestly think Scruggs is the best Chemistry Professor at ASU. I love going to his lecture. He knows what he's doing and he's eager to help anyone love Chem as much as he does! :) Nice guy. I may also be the only one in the class who thinks this but he's adorable. I rated him "hot" but I think the word should be adorable!
Scruggs was a very good teacher. You have to attend lectures and sit with your lab partners because there will be pop quizes. His tests are rather difficult, Chad's reviews helped out so much!
He's a great professor. He has a calm and friendly demeanor. If he taught CHM 116 I'd definately enroll in his class.
This teacher is no joke the worst chem teacher I have ever had. I used to love chemistry and it was my major untill I took Dr.Scruggs class, he completely ruined it for me! Chads reviews helped me the most, but as far as the lectures went, they were scattered, and did not corelate to what was on homework, or tests very often.
He's ight.
Scruggs is awesome! His lectures are pretty boring but he cares about his students. Plus, his grading scale is super easy.
Really easy class with all multiple choice Tests... gets boring but an easy A!
he's kind of boring but very nice and i was able to undestand the material fairly well. the recitation and labs helped a lot with applying what we learned in lecture. i enjoyed recitation and labs more than lecture but it wasn't terrible, yet not amazing. overall i'd recommend it
Easy class to get an A in--I averaged B's on the tests and got an A at the end. Lab and recitation help. Lectures probably aren't mandatory to attend, but the lecture quizzes he gives randomly are easy and worth 5 points which can always help. Funny guy with a nerdy sense of humor, pretty entertaining class! Make sure to do the mastering chemistry!
Dr. Scruggs' interest in his subject and teaching is what makes him great. It's fun to watch him get truly excited about chemistry just from showing a few slides. If you've had high school chemistry, the class should be a breeze. He assumes a lot of prior knowledge, but if you approach him he can be very helpful and always understanding.
Do not miss a recitation. You can't recover from it. Fairly easy teacher. Good guy. Math based chem class.
Dr. Scruggs was a great professor. He explained things clearly and tried not to get off topic when lecturing. He also gave us a lot of resources to help with studying for exams which were very helpful. As long as you pay attention during lectures and take advantage of the study materials, you should do well.
Scruggs was a pretty cool teacher. You can miss class a couple of times but you have to look over the notes online if you don't want the tests to grab you by surprise. Also don't miss class or recitation because you will be lost.
Easy professor, not necessary to go to lecture if you read the book.
Amazing teacher! Explains everything very thoroughly and always asks if there are any questions. My favorite professor at ASU!
Lecture is incredibly clear but then the hw doesn't make any sense
He goes over everything in the chapter very well. But if you do not study you will do terribly on the exams, but the Lab and recesitation help out alot. He does clicker questions that count for points, they add up so you should go to the lectures!
If you pay attention in lecture you should be fine. His lectures are very simple and he gives a fair amount of examples for you to understand what is going on. Since I have taken gen chem 3 years ago I still have a basic understanding and the class is a breeze.
Overall, his class isn't too hard. I've missed over 8 classes this semester and still have a mid B in his class. The online homework is a joke though, but there is a book that comes in the "bundle" that has all the answers. There is no attendance taken but he does a lot of clicker questions.
I worked so hard for this class and I still got a B+. He is too difficult to understand, as if he didn't really care if we get it or not, as long as he finishes his lecture for that day. He is smart and seem to know his stuff, but overall he just made me hate chem more.
Boring lectures, but he explains everything pretty well and puts all his powerpoints online. Participation points are given with clicker questions, so class is mandatory. Tests are easy if you take advantage of the practice exams - his actual tests look just like the practice exams but with different numbers, etc.
Very boring lecture. He is mostly specific but can be a little vague. Not a good class to take if this is your first chemistry class. You must be willing to work and study because you'll need it.
He is very helpful is answering specific questions after class and during office hours. His lectures of pretty boring though. The book is not used much, but the online homework is. The online homework is the most annoying part of the class. The tests are fairly tough. He posts a sample exam, but the real test is usually harder and different.

sample exams arent as helpful as i'd like, reviewing using mastering chemistry always helps on exams.
Not good at teaching, at all, whatsoever. All he does is read the powerpoint slides which are available online. Tests are ridiculous. Not a fun class. RUN AWAY!
He explains everything super well- class is just going over PowerPoints but it makes them clear so go. Sample exams almost identical to tests with #s changed. MasteringChemistry HW harder than tests so don't worry- plus the gray solutions book you get has a lot of HW answers. AND he looks like George from Greys Anatomy so thats fun! Loved the class

Lectures are horrible. Just reads the slides outloud which are online anyways. Everyone is always on facebook during class. Very mono tone. The sample tests aren't helpful when studying for the tests. and the homework is such a waste of time. Lab & rec are very easy though.
I am an honors student and had difficulty with this class. He makes no sense. The exmas are insane. I hosted a study group and everyone was complaining about the difficulty of his tests. Our class average is low. I am taking Chemistry 116 with another prof!
Professor Scruggs is so nice and has an easy-going yet academic demeanor about him. The class itself is easy as long as you SHOW UP and don't play around on facebook. I did not have a problem getting help from him. My lab TA was fantastic too: Rob Steele. Mastering Chemistry homework is not bad, the tests YOU SHOULD study for. I'm expecting an A...
He's an OK teacher, but that's about it. He gives students opportunities to get exactly what will be on the test through Chad's Review. If you study that AND the sample test, you'll do fine, because if you just do the sample exam, your screwed. Also, class is not a must, but you do get points for coming.
He hands out easy practice exams for the test, but then gives hard tricky questions on the actual tests. I have received nothing but A's on homework, recitations and lab material, but get only C's on his tests. do not recommend
He gives you all the resources you need to get an A. If you failed, you either didn't show up, or you didn't study. Chemistry is a hard subject, but this class was easy. He is clear in his explanations and accessible if you need help. lots of work, but thats science. I would recommend this professor.
Really nice professor. Was always helpful and willing to answer questions. When I was unable to attend his office hours I was able to use the IM on gmail to ask questions which was helpful. His lectures can get a little boring but you should still go to them. Study by watching chad's reviews and doing practice quizzes on masteringchem.
Dr. Scruggs is a nice/knowledgeable prof. I worked overnight shifts as a nurse, came to lecture, dozed off and Scruggs would still help me answer the clicker questions. He was always honest/lenient in points. Mastering Chemistry, recitation,& lab enhanced my learning. I did well when I studied and read the book; 94%/A. Recommend to all freshman
Lectures were boring and tedious. The practice exams were nothing like the actual. He is also extremely unclear on grading policies, especially at the end of the semester. He led on to everyone that there was tons of extra credit, when in fact all that "extra credit" were counted as grades. (5/5 instead of 5/0) Take Briggs or another professor.
As far as the "hard sciences" go, he made this class about as easy as a science class could be while still challenging the students. He was very clear on instruction, and posted practice exams. Homework was all done over Mastering Chemistry and was probably the hardest part of the class.
He made biochemistry really interesting. I really liked his lectures and tests were somewhat similar to the practice tests.
This guy is really nice and good at teaching. The class is just very large, roughly 300 kids. He does clicker questions in class. Online homework answers are all on google. Lab and recitation is very easy and will save your grade, but tests are hard unless you study alot and like the subject. The practice tests are very similar to actual test tho!
Super nice guy, explains everything really well in class if you listen. Attendance not mandatory but clicker points end up adding up so go. Harder than 113 but sample exams still almost identical to tests so look at those a lot. HW was fine, less to do so that was nice. It's my second class with him and I'd take another.
He was a very nice man. He explains material well. If you want an A just pay attention, do the practice exams, and ask questions. He is very helpful. I didnt use the textbook much but its helpful for extra study. I thought he was a great professor.
It's very easy to get an A in this class if you pay attention during lectures and do the practice exams. He's very clear, and he's very easy going for a professor. I definitely recommend him.
I took two years of advanced chemistry in high school and got an A in this class. I had him for two semesters. If you do the hw fully and make good use of the practice tests you will do fine. In lecture he's not really boring but isn't the most exciting. He's easy to meet with outside of class for extra help. He gives nice curves on exams.
Great teacher and a great guy. He really cares about the subject and students. Gives you EVERY chance to succeed with lots of opportunities for points (homework, recitation, clicker points, and labs). He gives practice exams that are extremely similar to tests. Also, he's generous with curving. I was expecting a D but got a B-, thank you God!
Great professor makes chemistry easy, explains material very well trys hard to make it so you succeed. He only keeps about 80% of the clicker points I miss a lot and still get great grades i didn't buy the book but if you're not great at chemistry you probably need to
Awesome teacher great at explaining Chemistry in an understandable way
He cares about every student and tries his best to make sure that every student has the best opportunity to succeed.
Scruggs is a very nice teacher! His tests are VERY easy as long as you don't make stupid mistakes and pay attention. There is kinda a lotta homework due for each chapter but they HELP a ton! (split the hmk up in groups!)
The first day of class he told us we wouldn't really need the textbook for lecture, only for lab and recitation. True to his word, he taught us everything we needed to know for his exams right there in class. Go to class and take notes, study his practice exams and you will get an A. Overall, really good professor.
Scruggs is a really nice guy and is more than willing to help anyone. The Class is just difficult no matter who you take it with. He has clicker questions for attendance but removes about four class periods worth at the end so if you miss a few days it wont count against you. Also, if you do well on the final he will replace your lowest test.
Best chemistry professor I have ever taken and plan in taking his CHM 116 course next semester. I highly recommend him as he is extremely helpful to explain difficult material and concepts. Exams can be challenging, but he does curve them and there are homework assignments, labs, and recitation point to offset bad scores. Take him if you can!
Great instructor! I plan on taking him for CHM116 next semester! Tests can be challenging but he curves and replaces your lowest test score with the grade from your final (if it's higher)!
Fairly easy class if you attend lecture, put some effort in the lab, and do the recitations. Mastering chemistry can be tedious and frustrating at times. I read the book only if a concept was unclear, but otherwise he was a really good instructor. Helpful outside of class, cuts class a little early if the boredom factor is high. Recommended!
I LOVE SCRUGGS!Exams were for the most part, very similar (in content) to the sample exams. Fair professor, he curved exams and you can replace your lowest exam score with your final exam score if it is higher. At office hours, he was really nice an genuine in person. Im taking him for CHM 116. Go to lecture you learn material & get clicker points
mixed feelings on scruggs.. even though i'm taking him again next semester. do his practice exams, they are identical to the exams. the grade you recieve on those is what you will get on the tests. homework is really easy, just long! I got a B in the class. don't need the textbook at all. show up to class for clicker points!
He is a great chemistry teacher!! Made it easy to understand and he uses a lot of humor in his classes!
Scruggs was an awesome chemistry teacher. He is very clear, gives a lot of examples and practice exams and questions. The homework is long, but is extremely helpful. Exams are almost exactly like reviews, just different numbers. He gives huge curves for the exams. I'm excited to have him as my professor next semester for CHM 116!
Professor Scruggs makes chemistry easy but also comprehensive. The concepts were well-explained. The majority of the grade is based on four 25 question tests; a 50 question final and online homework for each chapter. Professor Scruggs believes that a C should be the average grade, so he curves tests up until the average score is 75. A vry easy A.
I took Chemistry in high school, so the info seemed very simple and easy to understand. Everything you need to know is in the lecture slides, which he posts online. I honestly only attended class to answer the clicker questions for points. Tests were pretty easy, and he curves them almost excessively. Nice guy.
Scruggs is a nice guy and isnt a terrible teacher, however if you really want to LEARN the material, I wouldnt recommend him. I had his class and we were always a couple chapters behind the other classes, so in lab and recitations everyone in scruggs had no idea what they were doing. And you always feel like your missing vital information you need.
He's a nice guy and he really is willing to help but he is terrible at teaching. It is so hard to understand whats going on in that class. You can get a good grade if you try but its a very self teaching class. He knows his chemistry but he's terrible at explaining it to others.
Dr. Scruggs is a good teacher who always explains things clearly. He's very willing to help and the course really isn'too difficult if you show up for lecture and keep up with the homework.
Very good instructor. He's pretty chill and relates concepts exceptionally. Very willing to help. His lectures cover almost all the material, so if you want an A, you will need to read the book. Each chapter is about 40 pages long, with lots of pictures, so it's not exactly a chore.
I took 113 and 116 with him. His lectures aren't exciting, but he's a cool guy and at least he speaks English as a first language. The sample exams mirror the tests, and if you do the homework and pay attention during lab and recitation you may not even have to read the book to get a solid B. Definitely the easiest professor for CHM 113 and 116
Great guy, fun teacher. The lectures are boring but he does a great job explaining and clarifying the concepts.
Really helpful if you go talk to him but not even needed. His tests are usually pretty easy and really easy to understand
I seriously love Scruggs. He was thebest teacher ever. For a science teacher, you could not ask for anyone better. Goto class to get the clicker points. He usually curves tests. I took him for Chm 113 and Chm 116 and got A's.
Scruggs was a pretty decent professor. The course wasn't too easy nor too hard but mastering chemistry sucks really bad. Go to class, pay attention and answer click questions correctly, go to lab, recitation and at least get mid Bs on the exams and you should be able to get an A
He honestly had no interest in being in the class at all. He was unclear about what it was he expected. He gave us a study guide for the final in the class that was essentially useless. No one finished the test on time and he didn't curve the class at all. He didn't care about the class and he didn't care about his students.
Overall, a good professor. Just show up for class, take notes, and study slides for the exams. He is very helpful outside of class. Attendance is optional, but there's clicker points and you won't do well on the exams if you don't go to class. Allows a cheat sheet for the final, which was kinda helpful. Overall, pretty good class and professor.
Dr. Scruggs is the professor every student wants their instructor to be. He IS helpful & does want students to do well, but you have to tell him if you need help. And, yes, he did curve final grades. He did allow 1page of notes for the final, but yes, the final was still rough. Test prep should focus on the objectives he gives out.

He moves at a very easy pace. You do not cover very many topics per lecture so the material becomes very clear. There are clickers everyday and you spend a lot of time on each so the lectures can sometimes be boring. Homework is online and not that bad. Tests are mostly based off the slides. Very possible to get an A. Good teacher!
He is super funny...if you can stay awake and pay attention in lecture. The homework sucks. Read the book and do the study guides (they're identical to the test). Always go to class, you'll want those clicker points.
Took him for 113&116. Mastering chem isn't too bad, really helped me for tests. Lectures are boring. Clicker points for attendance, but still get points for wrong answers. Curves tests until average is 70%. Sample exams very similar to tests. Cares about students and wants them to succeed. Definitely take him.
not a bad professor. I took him for online chemistry. His lectures are pretty long and boring, and he doesnt seem very interested in making them. Online homework is pretty hard, but the exams are just like the practice exams online. The final was very hard, but he curved it. Generally tries to give everyone as good of a grade as possible.
Dr. Scruggs is very clear in his lectures. One thing to note is that he talks from a power point. I would recommend just listening to what he is teaching rather than take notes. The tests can be rough, but hey, its CHM. He's a fair grader and will always curve if the class average is below a 70.
I took Scruggs for CHM 113 and 116 - LOVED HIM! Such a nice guy, always curved exams. Mastering Chem HW sucked but you get the hang of it. I LOVE HIM! Got A's in both of his classes and will be taking him again in the future for an upper division class. TAKE HIM!
He’s a nice guy. Very helpful. Likes to have fun in class. Tests are a little difficult but not too bad. Clicker questions every lecture. Consider an honors contract for this course. I would recommend him!
Great professor
amazing dude for a chem class
Scruggs is a very good prof, but only if you pay careful attention to his lectures. However, many topics tend to be boring and you might easily zone out for these. Not a very engaging speaker, so if you are slow-minded like me, don't take him. Otherwise, if you do your homework and study hard, you might be more well off w/him than with other profs
Hard class, teacher is unorganized and at the end of the semester he rushes through everything and it becomes your problem to learn. We have flew by 10 chapters in one month. The tests are also pretty difficult. If you have little prior knowledge in chemistry don't expect anything more than a C unless you devote all your time to this one class
Good teacher, nice guy. Concepts are easy, but workload is fairly heavy given the amount of content covered in this class. Be prepared to do a fair amount of work, but if you put in the time, an A is easy. He's nice and fair, but there's a part of me that thinks he secretly hates college kids lol
Nice guy. He gets annoyed easily in class, because there are always the kids who don't want to be there. There is a ton of material to cover. It isn't hard, just time consuming, so put in the time and it will be easily passable.
Helpful if you need help with material. He explains things really well and posts all of his lectures online so you can review them for the tests. I would recommend taking his class.
This class is pretty hard but hey, it's chemistry. Go to the lectures for clicker points and try to pay attention (it can be hard). He is a nice guy and wants everyone to do well. Test are curved so the class average is 70% or more.
Awful teacher who's lack of organization becomes your problem at the end of the semester. Tests are REALLY hard the class average was always failing on every test. Very difficult and lectures were often behind the homework, lab, and recitation making things even harder.
This is not an easy class, there is a lot of information and a short amount of time. He gives sample exams before tests which were very helpful. He will also curve exams if they average is not around 70%. If I had to take another chem class I would take it from him.
Hard class because it's chemistry for engineers but "chemistry master" website helps a lot. He is a good professor. I would recommand him!
Dr. Scruggs is helpful and caring. Textbook was useless, so was recitation and lab. His lectures are helpful but the main thing is to study the sample exams to be able to score well on his tests. He does a lot of curving, 5% of grade from clicker Q's. Mastering chem hw can be somewhat long but gets shorter towards the end of the course. Take him.
Makes Chem easy. Is very clear when explaining and is helpful in office hours. Tests are very straightforward. He tapes all his lectures so you can skip lecture and watch them.
