Unproductive lecturer, 50 minute class and only teaches about 20 minutes of info
So hard to understand. Talks about nothing and thinks its chemistry. Try to get Titus instead of Thomas.
Couldn't care less about the students. Not available after class. Avoid.

He doesn't seem to care whether or not everyone understands the topic...he just continues with the lesson. The experiments he does are always on the tests so if you sit in the back and can't see, you basically have no chance of even passing the course.
I loved Dr. Thomas. I found him to try and explain concepts in non-scientific terms, which makes more difficult things easier to understand. I came in with a like for chemistry and left with a LOVE for the subject. I always recommend him to others.
Unorganized Notes, Unneccessary exam complications where all the questions are 5 step problems. Horriffic exams
Dull, Late, Unkept in Appearance... Dr. Thomas is an infected scab on the face of Temple University. Let me elaborate... Dr. Thomas wears 10 year old sweat pants to class and shows up 15 minutes late every day, poor prof on top of that!
You'll wish you had a lobotomy if you take this class... inane to say the least, Dr Thomas should not be teaching.
Difficult person. Constant mistakes. Impossible to get in touch with, never available. After and emailing and leaving notes on his door, still no reply. To fill requirements, try another science.
Very laid back, many of the q's on the exam requires many steps (with not enough time to do them) and he jokes around too much.
Very laid back teacher that would talk about everything except for the day's lesson. Don't believe him when he tells you that his tests arent hard. Entertaining teacher.
tests impossible.never missed a day of his lectures and studied a lot yet i barely passed.lectures are very eventful and he does keep the classes attention, however his tests are far too complicated.dont believe him when he says he says his tests are easy
Its all good
TESTS ARE FREAKIN HARD!! this is the first time that i've actually had to teach myself the entire course from the textbook. he is funny, but should be a comedian, not a teacher.
Not sure what to say about Thomas. Nice guy, that's true. I guess it's hard to teacher 300 students, but even for that level he seems to under-perform. It's not that he's not informed on the subjects--he just isn't explaining them properly.
Great teacher, funny, not what expected out of a science professor (ya know da monotone thing), knows what he is teaching, makes things seem very easy (breaks big chapters down in a few sentences), just combine this w/ recitation and u'll b A-OK!!!
I take Chem 12 at PSU Abington and Thomas is the Prof.... he's funny and keeps the class awake but he leactures at a nearly impossible pace! His class is pretty good, just study and do the homework. Bring a voice recorder.
He is a great teacher. Explains the material well and makes the material easy. Brings life to the material. And is available out side of class. HE IS THE BEST TEACHER AT TEMPLE.
When he tells you that u can "Slay the Dragon" dont listen, make sure u study. Hes a good guy and all, just cant teach to 300 students.
I had him twice (not by choice) His jokes are annoying and no1 laughs @ them as much as he does. His test are really really hard. Like some1 else said, I pretty much had to teach myself everything.
TERRIBLE! don't take him. HE is the WORST teacher I have ever had in 3 years at temple.

While he seems like a really nice person, he can not teach. Just because the material is easy for him does NOT mean it will be easy for the students especially when he only does one example and proclaims, "and thats chapter 5". The slay the dragon was cute but...I don't think I slayed it.
Absolute worst prof at temple. This guy does not know how to teach. He assumes the material is extremely easy for everyone and doesn't explain anything. Do not take him as a prof unless you are interested in teaching yourself chemistry.
Well, at least he's always good for a laugh. The easiest way to pass the class is to buy old copies of his exams. You'll ace it, but you will have to teach yourself at least 85% of the material. In Gen Chem, you'll either get a great prof with hard tests or an ok prof with moderate tests.
If you read the text and come to class, one will realize that chemistry is easy. He adds his sense humor to the class and that itself holds your attention. In addition, if you purchase his past tests, you'll see how much they will help you on the next test.
Dr. Thomas maintains a goods sense of humor while running an informative lecture, however, his tests are extremely difficult. Just remember, "slaying the dragon" is not the piece of cake he makes it out to be!
Although he is an overall nice guy, he can some time be too playful and not serious enough. His exams are extremely difficult and instead of explaining things in class he rambles about other things. He is NEVER ON TIME AND I MEAN THAT SINCERELY and on exam day he becomes this extrmely mean person.
Don't let his joking behavior fool you. He makes class fun but don't let down your guard when he mentions how easy the exams are. My advice is to study as many practice exams as possible. The past exams are nearly identical to the layout of the current ones. Couldn't find during his office hours.
horrible! I wouldn't advise taking him unless you already know chem very well because you will learn nothing from him except how to make a vodka and orange (which most of us already know). been at temple for 3 years and he is the worst teacher I have taken a class with. I still get nightmares!
Dr. Thomas comes off as a fun and easy professor at first, but don't be fooled. His lectures are mediocore and his tests are very hard. You really need to know the material in and out to do well on his exams. He's also not the best to receive help from. I do not recommend him.
he's fun in class but honestly if you read the book you do have to go, i think my grade went up when i stopped going actually, his lectures arent very good and his tests are really hard, he says they're easy. good guy though, but if you dont already know some chem stay away from him, it'll kill you
Thomas was a poor excuse for a college science teacher. Lectures extremely unorganized and not conducted seriously, and constant off topic jokes concerning alcohol, smoking, and his wife were uncalled for. tests didnt reflect lecture at all! He didnt keep asingle meeting he scheduled with me (during and out of office hours). I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM!
Very nice guy, stimulates interest in the material. Try to understand everything covered in the book and in lecture and you'll be fine. I changed my major to Chemistry after being thought by him, and it's probably the best decision I've ever made. If u think gen. chem. was too hard, you shouldn't be doing chemistry, or anything science-related.
At first I liked him but once you get to know him you'll see he doesn't care about his students. He was always late for class. Joked around instead of preparing us for what he deemed "easy tests". I met with multiple times and I doubt he even knows who I am. Not to mention he killed my GPA by recording the wrong final grade and hasn't fixed it yet.
Dr. Thomas is an awful professor. His tests are much harder than they need to be for a first semester Chem course. His teaching methods are weak (if you take his course, don't rely on his lectures) and his screwing around during class is a huge distraction.
His tests are really hard, he does not really prepare you for them and he just wastes so much class time by not showing up on time, and telling dumb jokes about his family. Just because he finds Chemisty easy, he assumes that everyone should find it easy which is not the case. Just study hard and rely on the book and his backtests.
ALWAYS LATE FOR CLASS AND FORGETS STUFF AND LEAVES FOR 15 MINUTES TO GO GET IT. He does tell u exactly what to expect on the test though, and past exams are available. Doing past exams is a must to do well. I think the tests are too long to take in 50 minutes though. He could spend a little bit more time actually teaching.
Dr. Thomas is and awesome professor...If you have him now then i guarantee you an a if you study his back exams. you dont even need to go to lecture. take advantage of this class because if you go onto organic its not going to be this easy
Ehhh hes a nice guy but I dont know about his class. He goes pretty fast.
Thomas is a very smart man. He knows his****. He is so funny and his classes are laid back. However, he doesnt spoon feed you everything that is on the test BUT he lets you have OLD TESTS that are the same types of problems that are going to be on your exam. TAKE THIS CLASS..YOULL LEARN SOOOO MUCH
His transparencies are a joke. Almost all of the derivations were wrong except at the very end where he copied from the book (*poof* right answer after 10 wrong lines). I simply did them myself since they're easy as long as you don't get confused by his errors. People started writing them from my notes anyway. I've worked for the msrc for years.
this teacher is nuts. he spends too much time joking around which is fine, but he ends up comin 10 min lates, 10 min to teach and 10 min to joke around. funny guy but hard to comprehend, talks to fast and unclear. his test arent that bad, u get backtests which are similar.
I love Dr. Thomas he is probably one of the best teachers i have ever had. He doesnt spoon feed you anything but he is always willing to help. I learned alot in his class. He makes you work for the grade. The class is very laid back.
Yes, he's constantly late. Yes, he flies thru the material. But Thomas is def still the BOY. He promotes a relaxed classroom atmosphere and emphasizes test preparation, which is essentially all that matters. Get some of his old tests and you are almost guaranteed an A or B.

I'm tired of waking up early to get to class and having him not show up on time. Obviously he doesn't value my time so why should I value his? I don't need him, I have a textbook. This guy is NOT a good teacher, trust me on this one.
he is late..but his daughter is really sick so i understand...when he is there, he tells you what you need to know...if you listen and study, you're fine....buy the tests, do the hw, come to class and if he's late or not there just study
horrible, horrible professor. please if you want to pass your chem class, take another professor. he is always late, doesn't care about the grade of his student, very mean, and always making fun of people in his class.
Good teacher but crazy. Yes, there is a method to his madness but he's still a nut. He's a nice guy, in spite of all that and is willing to help you outside of class. Likes to make fun of you though, so stay sharp. And if he he sees you outside of class, he will quiz you on what you should have learned. (Learned, not memorized)
sometimes he pisses me off. he wastes time talking about other stuff. but if u buy all his back-up tests, and do those problems at lease 2x, ull get at LEAST a B. hes an ok teacher. go to the MSRC for help. I got an A- in his class. hes aiight.
hads him for chem 12 at penn state over the summer. he was late sometimes due to having knee surgery, but he really tried to ease up on us for him not being there. he was willing to help if you didn't understand something, you just need to ask. his lectures were pretty thorough and the textbook/homeworks helped understand it even more.
he's an okay teacher. buy as many back-up tests and work on those problems, and ull do fine. he wastes so much time talking about anything other than chemistry...but his backup tests help...A LOT!
DO ALL YOUR WORK, GO TO RECITATION!!! BUY HIS OLD TESTS FROM THE CHEM SOCIETY AND STUDY STUDY STUDY...DO THESE THINGS N YOU'LL AT LEAST GET A B. WHEN HE'S AVAILABLE HE'LL HELP AS MUCH AS HE CAN.
worst teacher ever, doesnt explain things well at all, and the book he chose was no better. talks more about drinking then he does chemistry. I wouldn't recommend him, or take him again
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. I think he is a funny guy, but I go to class to learn and I just wasn't able to do so in his class.
he's a great person..tells funny jokes...but that doesnt make a good chem teacher..he was always late..we were like 4 wks behind the syllabus..he lectures 1 chapter in 20mins..he gives the impression his tests would be easy but they are not..STUDY! oh yea BUY HIS OLD TESTS FROM THE CHEM SOCIETY BECAUSE IT WILL HELP!
ONE OF HE WORST PROFESSORS IN TEMPLE,HE IS HARD TO UNDERSTAND, TEASES OTHERS, COMES TO CLASS LIKE 20 MIN LATE AND JOKES AROUND. DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH AT ALL. HE IS BETTER OFF AS A RECITIATION PROF OR TECHING ASSISTANT. HE IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF YOUR TIME AND MONEY. 1.5 OUT OF 10.
one of the worst CHEMISTRY Professors in temple. He is totally unprepared for lectures. Skims through them, tests are hard but there are practice tests. Comes lates, dismiss early, and jokes around too much.
just get his back exams from somebody! that's the key. i didn't understand his lecture. I just studied his back exams and i got both As in 71/72. some of the questions were exactly same from back exams ;) and go to his office hour. he is nice guy
Really great teacher, very funny, never boring, and very helpful
His teaching methods were terrible. The students basically teach themselves. The questions on the tests are nothing like the ones studied. Overall it was the worst teach I've had yet.
Thomas it a really nice guy but an ok teacher. To get a good grade all you have to do is go to his office after class and study his old test(which are almost the same). His test can be a little hard so just study hard and its not that bad. But definity take his class its alot of fun, his a really funny guy!
Dr. Thomas is the WORST teacher who ever existed. The man joke around most of the time in class and give the hardest tests. I had him my freshman year and I swore that I will NEVER take him again. He NEVER answer his e-mails. And always saying SLAY THE DRAGON when the tests are so impossible that you end up slaying yourself.
Why is Dr. Thomas still teaching? He is the worst. He is always late, unorganized. He actually loses student's tests and the student have to take the test over again. He dont teach well at all. He explains a chapter in brief words and its over. He make you feel dumb when you ask for help. Students like him because he's funny. IS funny gonna help yo
Why is Dr. Thomas still teaching? Students actually like him because he's funny. Is funny gonna help you pass the class? I dont think so. Let me give you the facts about Dr. Thomas. He's always late, unorganized. He fly through the chapters not makin sure students understand. He make you feel dumb when you ask him questions. His tests are so hard.
Very bad experience for first chem class in college. he always mumbles, always jokes around, goes through the slides like flash, and screws you over on the tests. this class is supposed to be easy, if you show kids in other classes your tests, they'll be like "damn, that's hard", dont take him
He makes everything very easy to understand and is very helpful. He is always willing to answer questions
I would say that Dr. Thomas has his ups and downs. If you like a teacher to teach right out of the book, he's great. If you like a funny teacher, he's great. If you like a fast teacher, he's great. If you enjoy going to office hours, he's great. If you don't like those things, he's the wrong prof for you.
Very funny guy. However, he makes the test seem so easy when they're really not. I studied so hard and barely passed them. No homework though (although you really should read before class). Lectures are extremely fast, but notes are available online so make use of them.
Hes an okay teacher but he likes to joke around alot and then he blames you if you fail the test......he tells you to SLAY THE DRAGON on the tests but sometimes it can be hard.......he goes through the slides really fast and expects you to get it right there and then....but other than that just study on your own and visit him in his office hours

Prof. Thomas is way too loud, jokes too much, doesn't cover the material on time, at the end of semester tries to cover like 3 chapters.
Dr. Thomas has a unique teaching style that keeps you interested in the class. You may not understand everything thought in the class, he makes up for it with private sessions.
Keeps the class interesting. Incomprehensible handwriting, Difficult to understand at times, chronically late, forces you to buy his old tests otherwise passing is unlikely. Nice guy but little time for students, Average on tests for Chem 2 was 15 out of 25. His powerpoints..Next to useless. How about testing us on what we know Thomas...
Dr. thomas is a good teacher, but his tests are a bit confusing, but they are easy IF U KNOW HOW TO CALCULATE EVERYTHING.. he likes to mix several materials in one problem, may seem a bit hard, but not at all hard if u STUDY!! Go see him and he is very helpful.
he is cool, funny, he makes the class luagh not boring but a little confusing sometime.
It was my second time taking this class since my credits didn't transfer over from my previous school, but he kept me interested and clarified meaterial I had problems with before. He is usually late to class, but he will make you laugh and doesn't make the class boring. If you need help, he encourages you to go see him.
He's always late, ends class early, doesn't teach us what we need to know, jokes around too much, and gets angry when the class fails a test because 1.) he doesn't teach us well and 2.) the correct answers aren't on the test! Horrible teacher. I tried my best and I still didn't get over a B. And I'm a A to B student. Avoid him at all costs.
I have Dr. Thomas this semester for Gen. Chem. I. He has a good disposition, if you like jokes and hearing stories about his wife and kids, but if you are a more studious person, his teaching style may seem less than adequate. Starts class late, ends class early, messy notes, useless powerpoints, and has no time for students.
Dr thomas is funny and nice...he makes lectures understanding yet you dont need to go to class..can jus read its important to study his old test alott ..hard tests but all multiple choice
real good professor but work is mandatory to pas his class. He thinks hes a comedian, but could use some work. But really you will learn from his class is you are willing to o=do work.
He is useless and provides no help to students as he stands up front yelling inaudible facts. He confuses himself during class and often failed to show up for a recitation. He is the worst professor I have taken and was an even bigger a**hole when I went to his office for help.
Dr thomas is the man. he strives to be the funniest professor on temple campus. Chem 1 is pretty easy and most peeps had it in high school so he doesnt take it very serious. I bet he used to rock some gators and an afro back in the day lol
Dr Thomas is an awful professor. Nice guy and down to earth outside of class, but in the classroom, forget it! He goes through notes and doesnt give you time to write anything down. He is ALWAYS LATE!!! He mumbles, and he is not approachable for any help. He is VERY unfair with tests. Overall...search for another professor!
Wastes class time. Tests are irrelevant.
Terrible professor. Blows through chapters using powerpoints, shows up to class late, and tests are hard as hell! The only positive thing about him is he curves alot, but only because no one learns anything in his lectures and fails the exams (the class average per exam were like 50-60%) If you need to learn chem for post grad career, avoid Thomas!!
Thomas is a nice guy outside the classroom except in he relates chemistry to crazy things that dont make sense. His writing over the overhead can not be read and he always talks about "slaying dragons" which are his tests, but they're pretty hard to slay.. He curves a lot, but he's just an okay professor.
Dr. Thomas is a very nice person and easy to talk to, especially if your conversation involves the Phillies. Lectures were effectively useless. Prepare to learn a lot about this man's childhood and interesting anecdotes from his mother's teachings. Chemistry, not so much.
Took him for Gen Chem 1 & 2. Recitation and lab are more useful for understanding the concepts. Exams are all multiple choice. STUDY BACK EXAMS!!! If you don't you will be very surprised come the day of the exam. For back exams go to Temple's Chemical Society website.
i took him for gen chem 2 i never went to any of the classes when i averaged my grade before the curve it was a 62 and i ended up with a B so there was a huge curve! usually he doesnt show up to class or he comes in late
Completely pathetic ... tests are ridiculous and he does not teach for more than 20 minutes during a 50 minute lecture ...
I had him for college chem 1. I can't give him a bad review even though his lectures weren't that useful. Honestly, he is without a doubt the funniest professor I ever had. Study the text and the back tests and you will do well.
He treats his class as more of a comic routine. He just sits at the desk and glides through powerpoints without fully explaining them. His tests are completely different from his practice problems too. If you want to have to teach yourself, take Dr. Thomas
I'm an A student, and there is absolutely no way I should be getting low grades in Chem. for how much time I put into it. Please do not take his class.
DR.Thomas is an amazing teacher. yes he is difficult but he wants you to put a lot of effort in. if you don't understand what he is teaching or the material that you are studying, go to his office hours;he is more than willing to help. he looks at effort. my average before the final was a 51.99%. with his help, i got an A on the final, B+ for total
Test averages were in the 50s all semester. If you heard Thomas has a huge curve at the end, don't listen. I heard that from numerous people who took him and figured I'd do fine with the curve. BUT, I had a 68% (C+ on the grading scale) before final grades were posted and a C+ after final grades were posted. WHERE IS THE CURVE IN THAT???
Dr Thomas was a really good teacher and I highly recommend him for Gen Chem I & II
I had Dr. Thomas for Chem 1 and 2 and received a B+ in both classes. The truth about the curbsis that they are THE TRUTH!... As long as all your test scores are above average you have no problem with recieving AT LEAST A B in the class. He jokes around but he knows his stuff. The learning atmosphere is to relax and to enjoy learning chemistry.
Not good! Thomas does not go through everything and is rather annoying and loud. Do not recommend.
It looks like he doesnt teach but if you read the chapter before class what he says in lecture helps alot. He knows short ways of teaching a topic. As long as you study for the exams you should be fine and the curve is if you are at average the letter grade will be a C.He is a good guy get to know him make sure he knows your name..this will help :)
His classes are such a travesty, is it any wonder most of his students are failing?
chem 1, second week of class
awesome!
the comment below is sarcastic
does anybody know where i can get a copy of his old tests?
Only take this class if you've been doing well your whole academic career and want to know what its like to fail miserably with a professor who doesn't even give you the time of day.
You can barely understand him but you get used to the way he talks, he also starts yelling at the whole class for no reason.. and its about nothing! he knows his stuff but sometimes moves too fast and then starts yelling about how we must know the material! There are other chem teachers so do not take Thomas!
doesnt even have office hours, doesnt check his email or voice mail and his recitations are pointless
He is really funny and nice men. But when it gets to teaching he is looking to his notes and power points and feels like he lost something. He did not give a lot of notes my notebook from chem 1032 is still empty. It is many different professor of chem at TU. Save your time:)
To be honest, he's a really nice guy. As a teacher he's not even that bad either. It's just that his tests seem to be impossible to pass. I've taken his tests and walked out confident I knew what I was doing, only to get very low scores. Just be prepared for some of the hardest tests ever if you take this guy.
A lot of people think this class is extremely hard, but I am terrible at chemistry and have managed to get A's on all of his tests so far. However, you definately need to study for his tests. Go to recitation and/or office hours if you don't understand something; it really helps. Also, it might be a good idea to take 1027 before 1031.
Dr. Thomas is really helpful if you go to his office, talk to him and his tests are pretty straightforward only if you study. I suggests you to form a study group and do as many practice problems as possible.
had him for application to chem. quizzes are mad easy, tests are moderately hard. you gotta either pay attention to the lectures or study to pass this class because he doesnt curve. Class was not too hard to pass
Dr. Thomas specializes in BEING GOOD TO PEOPLE. Students love him and he truly respects and works with you.I have had Organic Chemistry I&II already. This teacher is the ONLY WELL ROUNDED TEACHER I've had at Temple. I graduated and returned to take this class as a requirement. I can boldly say: One of the best teachers in my long college career.A-
I have his class now...got a B+ on the first test awaiting the next. In my opinion, he is a good, but is very lazy with his teaching. Let the book and office hours be your best friend. Class was not really helpful, but Mastering Chemistry was. Overall, if your choose to take this class, your taking a 50/50 chance. Either you pass or you don't.
He's a great professor comapred to the other options for Chemisty. There is almsot no way that you can fail his class. The averages for other professors lie around a 60, while its almost impossible to get that on one of his tests. repeats questions all the time! easy easy easy
Extreemly hard, does not teach a whole lot during lecture and expects complete comprehension on all tests, most tests are on only two or three specific math equations that are usually the hardest and most overlooked ones in the chapter. Would not reccomend at all.
this teacher is the worst teacher ever. He doesn't teach at all. He doesn't encourage student to work hard if they don't do well on the exam. you dont get your test back to know how you did it. He is the worst teacher. I don't recommend him.
Thomas is funny but his powerpoint lectures don't help, so there's no point in going to class. Just read the book and do all the problems and you'll be fine. Study the questions that he sends out too.
He was often very late to class, even on exam days when we only had 50 minutes for the exam. He was hard to understand and his lectures weren't helpful. I'm bad at chem and math and had a lot of difficulty. He moved too fast, and I couldn't keep up. Tried to teach myself, didn't work out so well. He was also very rude to me on several occasions.
One of the worst chem professors temple has. He shows up late to class, spends time discussing his stupid jokes, and doesn't even help when you show up to his office hours. I would recommend another professor asap!!!!
Thomas is an awful teacher. He spends no time with his students as if its a waste of time, is NEVER on time for class, and couldn't explain basic concepts if his life depended on it. The class average for the final was a 51 and he didn't curve it at all (it was too much of a hassle for him). Don't bothering going to class; it's a waste of time.
Thomas was absolutely useless. He avoided helping students like the plague and was never on time for class. The class average for the final was indeed a 51, with the class high (of 200 students) being a 78 with no curve. He was impossible to understand and always rushed students out of his office during office hours. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
For Chem 2 the class is not hard. For this teacher you will have to teach yourself a lot but as long as you do well on the exams then you are good. I personally got an A and I didnt show up to class at all. I just slept in n study really hard when exams roll around. But this is my style. If you are not a self taught person than u are effed!!!
He's really not that bad. He was helpful and talkative when I went to see him during office hours. However, his lectures aren't as helpful and his tests are very very difficult. He will curve, so don't worry. Get to know him a bit and make sure you try to "slay the dragon" and get around say 10% above average and you'll get out with at least a B.
I wouldnt take him ever again...I regrete switching from Dr. Child's to his class, should have listened to my friends who said I shouldn't take him and trust me now I'm paying for it!
Good luck taking notes cause he'll just breeze through his powerpoints. He doesn't give open-ended exam so you'll get NO credit for work. I literally studied all on my own and only gone to msrc or TA for help. His method is to literally holler the lesson and tries to make humor of it. If you're stuck with him, groups and doing HW will be a must!
Absolutely horrid teacher. Rushed through his book-based powerpoints, concepts were overlooked for having been taught in chem 1 with no helpful review, gets angry when the lecture room doesn't respond, yells when the class doesn't do well, doesn't respond intelligently to emails, and tries to ease his lack of ability with humor. Shouldnt be around.
Take this class if you want to study entirely on your own because his lecture doesn't help at all. And if you ask him a question through an email expect 3rd grade level correspondence that is if you get a response. Disgrace to academics. Emailed a chem department person about him, they didnt respond either. BUSH LEAGUE DEPARTMENT w/ TERRIBLE STAFF!
The class was a bit challenging, self-studying is required. He uses powerpoints from the book in lecture and flys through them. If you need help just ask him and he will help you until you understand. His exams are easier than other professors because I saw other professors exams and they seemed harder. He is hilarious and very energetic.
Thomas was a pretty great teacher. At times his speech is hard to understand, and yes he moves very fast. But overall if you study the powerpoint notes provided and go to his lectures, it is really easy to pass. Also in his office hours you won't leave there without knowing what you are doing. He kept it interesting. I'm going to take him again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. you will entirely regret it. if you do prepare for slides and a lecture that will absolutely not help you for the test. Class avg was usually around the 40-60 range. incomprehensible in speech inconsiderate with emails (3rd grade writing level) gets angry at the class when not doing well. caution: DONT TAKE IF YOU WANT AN A
Dr. Thomas is challenging to say the least. Make sure you read over the entire chapter, do some of the problems at the end of the chapter, and know mastering chem to do well on his tests. I got an A- in the class, but I studied like crazy throughout the entire semester.
I wouldn't recommend anyone taking him, because i studied so hard for his class and still couldn't get a fair grade. He comes late to the class and he keeps cracking jokes. He never curved any of our grades. The class average was always 50-60.
Had him for Gen Chem 1. Terrible professor, easy class to pass. Doesn't do pop quizzes and the tests (all 20 question mult choice) are the same as the reviews on BB. Just go to Rec. If you are a sci major, take Scovill, Price, Childs or Michels, or you won't learn anything.
Dr. Thomas was a great professor, and I was suprised to see some negative comments on here. Chemistry is a difficult and course and one I personally think is boring, but Thomas brought a sense of humor to an otherwise dull course, and he is so willing to help you after, and outside of class. However he does tend to move through the material quickly
Absolutely HORRIBLE CLASS. Avoid taking chem with Thomas if at all possible, and get out immeadiately if you still can. Tests are extremely difficult(class avg. usually in low 60s). He trys to fail people, and is unhappy when the rare case of the class avg on a test is passing occurs.
Dr. Thomas was a good teacher, but his teaching style was okay. I thought he was funny, helpful, fair and nice. There were two easy exams and two hard ones, and the final was a little harder than I thought it would be. He also offered extra credit one time.
Dr. Thomas, man do I regret the day I got this loser professor. I will admit,he knows his subject, but sucks at teaching others. Makes corny jokes with annoying laugh. I barely understand when he makes jokes,or when he talks too fast. His exams contain 20 multiple choice questions!!! And questions are a joke. Hate you so much Dr. THOMAS!!!!!!!!!!
...was a good teacher, test questions were a little tricky at times, but he was very helpful, and generous with grading towards the end. he posts tons of helpful homework problems. i would take him again.
I loved Dr. Thomas! Most of the people on here complaining about him probably were the many that didnt show up to class. Hes more than helpful, and actually cares about your grade. The only difference is he challenges his students to make sure everything we learn actually sticks with us for a lifetime. Not just a class time. Take Thomas's class!!!
Dr Thomas is a very good teacher, he teaches well and his exams are really easy, just that he rushes towards the end of course but overall he is good.Anyone that cann't pass his class will really find it hard to pass other science classes.
Very good prof, exams are really easy. If you can't pass his class then don't bother taking any other science class
He's super helpful when you go to his office hours! you get used to his exams, which are all multiple choice and mostly math related questions. He's amazing and actually cares about the student, he will definitely go out of his way to help you if you do your part.
Dr. Thomas dove right into the material. He went at a fast pace but covered all the bases and really made you aware of everything you needed to know for the test. Made review sheets available and would answer questions in class. I highly recommend him.
Okay, first off, he writes a textbook that costs over 100$ THAT WE NEVER USE. Second off, the chapters aren't listed in this textbook. Oh and by the way, the textbook has no binding. Yet he apparently wrote it with another teacher. Exams are difficult and he does not teach clearly. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
He is awful!!!! Will make fun of you if you don't understand, his tests are difficult and unfair, and he yells in class constantly. Rushes through lectures and exams. If the class had more time on the exams, the class average probably wouldn't be a 60%! DON'T TAKE HIM!
hes a great person but not a good teacher. he rushes through his lectures and talks with a mumble sometimes, so it very hard to understand him. also its difficult to take notes in his class b/c you cant understand what he say nor what he is writing. do not take his course if your new to chemistry b/c his class will make you change your major!
He was not helpful at all, you'd think he'd take more time to explain things when the class average was lower than a 65% on every test! He mumbles quite a bit so he's pretty difficult to understand. I would not recommend taking this class with dr thomas as the professor !
Dr Thomas is funny and you will never be bored in his lectures. However, his tests are extremely difficult and he does not explain well. He don't curve like the other professors and won't really care if you fail. I recommend you to skip him if you can.
Great guy and fun class to attend. Takes some time to get used to his teaching style, but if you put the time forth it isn't too bad. I have taken him two semesters and while the work is tough, as long as you study it is manageable. His tests are tough but fair! I would recommend him if you are decent at self teach, and want a fun lecture!
He's Amazing!Super helpful in his office hrs and very personable. Even though the class avg.was about a 60-69 that was because half the class never comes to lecture you can't blame a teacher tht your not learning if you dont come. Also has study nights every tues.to help with any questions I go all the time & out of a class of 200 usually 3 come.
As teacher, l like him a lot very helpful, with the Tuesday night study sessions, where he answers your questions, if you dont read and don`t use the extra revision material.. it will be hard, but as long as you go back to the book and study what he says..it will make the Journey better.
You may not like his teaching style, but if you don't do well in Dr. Thomas' class it's your own fault. He's a super nice guy and goes out of his way to help students. He stayed late on his 30 year anniversary to make sure we were prepared for an upcoming test.
Very good professor. Likes to joke around in class, but if you pay attention you'll get the info. you need. Extra review sessions were very helpful. If you have questions, he will work with you on them. Tests can be a bit tough, if you study and talk to him you should be fine. Finish homework before it's due.
Very easy, has delightful study guides, makes sure you KNOW what will be on the test. Sometimes his lectures are slightly unclear, a little hard to follow. He's quite funny and will keep you engaged during class, but is a little disorganized when it comes to his Blackboard content.
This class definitely has a heavy work load that you are supposed to do for each class and to know what will be on each test. I felt that Dr. Thomas was not very organized with how he taught information but he was always willing to help you better understand the problems taught in class. He also keeps class interesting by joking around often.
Really nice professor , likes to joke around. His teaching style can be unclear and he goes through the material really quickly. His tests are okay. Wouldn't recommend him if you're not good at chem.
THE BEST CHEMISTRY TEACHER IVE EVER HAD!he is a little difficult to understand at times but he is very good at what he does. he doesn't hand out A's though you have to work for it & "slay the dragon" as he says. TAKE HIM!
Willing to help whenever you need it. You have to get use to his teaching though. I recommend taking him for 1027 and 1031 because 1027 is a stepping stone to ease you into gen chem.
take him for 1027 not 1031 his teaching styles great for the basics it makes u more confident and feel more prepared for 1031 but he's too unorganized and unconventional for a higher level class really nice guy though
great person, horrible professor. dont take him if you expect to be taught anything in actual lecture. everything i learned, i learned from my tutor.
Extremely Unprofessional and disorganized. Does not follow through with promises made in class to upload documents, grades, etc. He also teaches the class at a high school level. If you are interested in chemistry, do not take him.
Really good at teaching the basics, i loved having him for 1027 and felt far better prepared for gen chem 1 as a result. I don't imagine he would be a great choice for more advanced science courses, as he relies on goofy metaphors and other silliness. He does many practice problems in class so you feel really prepared to deal with them on tests.
Dr. Thomas is an awesome guy, but he is SO CONFUSING. He talks super fast, and barely teaches. He spends most of the class using obscure metaphors for the material and talking about his life. Same with recitation. This class was ONLY challenging because we barely learned anything--SHOULD have been an easy class!
He's nice and funny, but he isn't very dependable. He had me and two other students waiting for him for thirty minutes...idk if he ever showed up because I left. I learn from good notes and all he does is go through problems and isn't organized with it. I love his passion for chemistry, but he should've just been a researcher
Dr. Thomas is a really cool guy and cares about his students. He'll make jokes throughout the class, but falls behind easily. His tests are really hard and he's not very good at teaching the material. He's also usually late to class.
I literally never understood what he was saying. Pretty much never showed up to class -- except on test days and random days when I felt like it. Failed basically every test and somehow still managed to pass with a C. All I really did was the Mastering Chem assignments ...which he gave everyone a 100 on anyways because he's so unorganized.
He's an ok educator if you sit infront and pay attention. His curve is out of this world. Gives bonus. yet unorganized. will not prepare you for the final. U should read the book and DO THE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK AND ONLINE. you should get an A.
Professor is able to teach students with gifts in Chemistry, but students who desire desperately to lelearn chemistry he lacks the ability to help such students to connect the dots.
Hes amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is a great guy but not a very great teacher. He is really approachable and willing to help but his test are absolutely the worst. I understood all of the problems and how to do them but he added material on the test that was not covered in class and expected you to know it. I advise against his class. Btw, I enjoy Chem and I'm a Bio Major.
Great guy, terrible professor. Lectures are hard to follow and he was always late to recitation. He will make you laugh, but you won't learn chem. Avoid taking him if you can.
He was my favorite professor this semester. Really great guy. He is hard to understand and moves quickly but if you are willing to ask for help he will do everything he can to help you. Make an effort to get to know him and he will help you even more.
He was a great professor. Always willing to help, you just need to get to know him. His test are different than the review sheets he gives so you have to understand the material. He was my favorite professor this past semester!!
A great person but terrible professor. His teaching style is fast paced and you must keep up or else you'll be left behind. If you're taking intro to chem, he is the only professor that teaches it. Tip: look up youtube videos and online help to learn because you won't learn much in class. Textbook helps a lot too. Great guy, terrible teacer.
Terrible. Avoid him at all cost!! Lecture is a waste of time and he doesn't tell you what is on the tests! Did not curve and gave no chance for extra credit! The book was never even used! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
He is a good professor and great person. You have to be willing to put the effort into getting the best grade possible. He does goes by things fast expecting you to already know it from homework and studying. The best thing to do is go to his office hours he will break everything down for you. Make sure he knows your name. NICE GUY
Great teacher. Simplifies everything as very helpful and wiling to explain or slow down when you do not understand something. note he does go fast but if you put in the effort and stay on task you will do fine. I have taken him twice and hes a great teacher and a great person and so funny he really makes the class enjoyable.
Very condescending if you do not understand. Doesn't work with students to help them and doesn't really care for the class. usually shows up late and dismisses early. Not the worst teacher but avoid if possible.
DR. T isn't a good teacher. I had to teach myself everything because his tests are nothing like what he teaches in class. If I had not taken chemistry classes previous, I would be failing, like most kids in the class. You don't use your textbook so don't bother buying it! The quizzes are easy though they don't really help your grade.
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY TEACH. EVEN THOUGH I STUDY THE BOOK AND DO THE HOMEWORK, MY FINAL GRADE ISN'T WHAT I EXPECTED, BUT AT LEAST I PASSED THE CLASS, WHICH I AM HAPPY FOR. DO NOT TAKE HIM, TAKE PROFESSOR GILBERT INSTEAD.
The worst teacher i've ever had by far. Purposely disrupts the efforts of disabled students because he doesn't feel like going through extra work to get tests to them. Horrible.
He is a very kind person, however his teaching is so confusing. He is hard to understand. He has a lot of family issues and that is why he did not spend time preparing for his class. He is lazy and does not push the class to practice more. He should have retire sooner.
It's sad that although I thought I knew the subject through self teaching, I ended up with a not so good grade. there goes my chances in getting into any pharmacy school.
Simplifies everything he teaches. He moves fast paced but if you are in class and do the work you should be fine.
I had Dr T app of chemistry and gen chem I. So far he as been my favorite professor here. Difficult to understand at times but he keeps lecture very interesting by cracking jokes that are related to the material. He TRULY wants to see his students succeed and will help you if you seek it. And his curve is out of this world!
Dr. Thomas is a horrible professor. He is a nice guy, but his teaching style is so terrible. Do not take this class!! It is hard to understand him and he is not clear when he teaches. I had to teach myself most topics and I still ended with an average grade.
Doctor Thomas has been the worst professor I've had. Moves way too fast and most of the time you can't understand his handwriting which makes it very difficult to take notes. He's a nice guy, but just a God awful professor. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
He does tons of problems during class, and will get the class involved in doing the problems after the initial practice to show how it's done. If you need help with any of the material he's very approachable, and will offer to come in before his office hours to help you. If he knows your putting in effort to do better he won't let you fail.
No matter how much you study his test are nearly impossible. Quizzes are graded extremely tough too. The one good thing about this class is the curve that he gives at the end of the semester.
This has to be the worst professor I have ever had. He's nice but this class is terrible. No matter how early and how much me and other friends got together to study, we still managed to all do bad on his tests. Its easy to understand until you actually get the test and there is only 50 minutes. Would not recommend at all! Avoid.
He is the absolute worst. Tests are impossible no matter how hard you study. His quizzes, what you do in class, and the reviews he posts are nothing like the tests. Worst experience, I absolutely hated his class. I used to be a straight A student; not anymore. Avoid at all costs!!!!!
Great Chemistry teacher when COMPARED to the others at Temple U. Tests are tough and the class average usually is around a low D. If you study and know the material, getting a B or A is not impossible. There is a large curve at the end which will dramatically help.
Do not take this professor, instead take 8 am bloxton. His lectures are pointless. He enters class and throws a math problem on the board and says "get to work". He never taught one concept in class ever. The only reason i passed was because i read each chapter and learned the material on my own. His exams? forget it they're impossible. all math
Horrible. He moves way to fast and his handwriting is illegible which makes the problems 100 times more confusing. If there is another professor for 1027 please take them. He is such a nice person all around but his teaching method is awful.
terrible hand writing. good guy but I pretty much taught myself everything.
Dr. Thomas is an excellent instructor just go to office hours! He really respects student that actually care about their grades. He knows kids struggle and he is there to help and long as you meet him half way! I would HIGHLY suggest taking him. I am not in other chemistry classes and I find that I had an upper hand because of taking him.
Dr. Thomas is such a great person but honestly is not a very good teacher whatsoever. He always spoke too fast to understand and went through examples that were nearly impossible to follow. Definitely a "weed out" type professor. Hardest two quizzes I've ever taken in my life! Impossible first test. Never made it to the actual exams. Stay away.
The class is curved (aim for a 65-70% before curve for a B) however if you bomb one test below a 40%, drop immediately, it only gets harder
Thomas took so long to teach material we didn't have 4 exams like every other class, we had 3. Each exam was filled with questions we weren't prepared for, but he ended up curving graciously. On two occasions he didn't show up for class and was late every day. He never factored in absences for recitation and there were only 3 quizzes.
Professor Thomas has a great personality but I can't say the same about is teaching methods/skills. He rushed through lectures, he would often get distracted & talk about something completely unrelated to the subject, & he would get really mad at us for not knowing something or getting something wrong. The quizes and exam were extremely hard!
Professor Thomas was very nice and lenient on make-up quizzes and getting notes. However, his exams and quizzes were extremely hard that almost everyone in the class would barely pass. There is a curve at the end of the semester but you need to get a certain grade in order to get at least a curved B.
Nice person. Very hard to understand at times , you might have to tech yourself sometimes or use office hours. Buy the textbook so you can teach yourself. Good luck. :) OH AND HE CURVES THE FINAL GRADE!
He is an awful professor, I went to office hours 9 times and he WAS NOT THERE. The class is graded off the tests and the averages were around 40%. My class did so poorly there was a 20% curve. Avoid at all costs.
If you aren't good with learning different topics on your own, don't take his class. But if you are able to read a textbook and understand what is going on in class, this class is not that bad. I got a B in the class without a curve and an A- with the curve.
He's a tough grader on test, and expects you to know the subject before even teaching you about it. He is a poor (careless) professor but is accessible outside of class and hilarious. But nothing else.
I liked him, but most don't. I found that if you show him you care as a student, by visiting him during office hours, he will help you a lot in return. He can be a tough grader and very hard to understand at times. He is never late or unorganized. he is very funny and loves to break down material so that it is easier to be understood.
Definitely a tough class, but Dr. Thomas really wants his students to do well. I took him for Chem 1027 and Chem 1031 and I would take him again if I could. During lecture he goes over packets that he has made and does problems out. The tests are all multiple choice, but they are very hard and Manny people don'd do very well on them. Study!!!
Overall, I would say he is an "OK" teacher. He goes through the material very fast, making it hard to grasp. However, if you study right after the material is introduced you should be fine. Youtube and Khan Academy helps alot. The lab and online homework helps with your grade and he does a BIG CURVE at the end of the semester!
here is how you will end his class with an A: - go to his review sessions on mondays!!!! he curves in the end, but will curve your grade even more when he sees that you care - print out EVERY back exam that he POSTS ON CANVAS and do them!! time yourself and go through these exams. they are VERY SIMILAR to the actual exam you're welcome :)
So tough! Not the best teacher over-all, I wish he could improve his handwriting and speaking. But if you are taking him here are some tips. BEWARE POP QUIZZES. He curves nicely so try to be a bit above average. Youtube helps teach you a lot. Try to read what we are about to go over. Look at practice test, very similar to the real one. Good luck!
Thomas has an awesome personality, he's a really good guy and he's super funny. He isn't really great at explaining things and sometimes is hard to understand. He goes SO FAST through the material so use youtube. Tests are almost impossible, everyone gets 60 or below. Massive curve at the end of the semester that bumps your grade like 10 percent
Allan Thomas is a funny guy. His workload becomes excessive towards the end and the workload becomes time consuming. He can teach well, but the amount of homework he assigns, random pop quizzes, and difficult tests demand a lot of attention and hard work. If you want to take him make sure you know how hard you have to work!
Yes he has pop quizzes. He follows a pattern of; introducing a topic, giving a lecture pop quiz, then recitation quiz of two topics/chapters then exam on three topics/chapters. Hes very fair, do the homework, know your formulas.
Great guy but can talk quickly and his writing isn't the best. Make sure you do all of his tests that he posts online since they are very similar to your actual exams.
Dr. Thomas is a nice person but he was fairly unorganized as a professor, especially during lectures. His weekly review sessions and review packets were very helpful. Also good luck at meeting him at office hours- he often didnt show up and rarely replied to emails. The best time to talk to him is right after class if you have time to get in line.
Be prepared for youtube to teach you this course. Dr.T is a funny man with a great personality but he CANNOT teach. His explanations for subjects as simple as mole concepts and gas laws are so unnecessarily complex. Also, all his exams are multiple choice so if you prefer someone who gives partial credit, this isn't the class for you.
This class is hard by no means. The tests are similar to the practice ones in each packet, pop quizzes are basically announces, and there is a curve at the end. I recommend showing up to class and reviews because he will give you a higher curve for being a hard worker.
So I took chem 1 and 2 with him and I think hes definitely one of the better Chem professors at temple. His exams are super straightforward. In chem 1 for exam 2 he had the exam in front of him and told us exactly what each question was going to be about.
Very good professor. Not the best with the use of technology, but he's very fair and gives exam that are very similar to lecture work and quizzes. He's always willing to help. 10/10 would recommend
The score that Dr. Thomas has been assigned does no justice to the type of professor he is. Dr. Thomas is by far the best professor you can ask for. He explains clearly and does his nest to help students understand. Dr. Thomas is always involved with his students and is easily accessible. As a person he is genuine, caring, and the funniest prof!
Overall really sweet and caring guy, my entire class loved him. He is a bit older so has some issues using technology but he is sweet and loves teaching although he is not very great at it. Most are unable to even read his handwriting and it is extremely difficult to understand or learn anything. Pop Quiz at least once a week and tests and quizzes.
Dr. Thomas is very caring. You will get a decent foundation in chem, enough to pass chem I, however you have to do the study packets to get the most out of this lectures. He started rushing through the last unit and it's so hard to follow. I used STEM Tutoring which helped a lot and I printed out tons of practice worksheets.
Dr Thomas is one of the most caring professors I had for the fall semester. He is very understanding and passionate about what he teaches. He uses a piece of paper to write down problems during lectures and it is hard to read and it's very confusing. Review the study packets on canvas and watch Youtube videos, take notes and you can pass the class.
Dr. Thomas is a sweet guy but can get frustrated sometimes with students and their questions. He often has issues with technology and rarely can be reached by email. Lectures can be hard to follow along (given his sloppy handwriting and lack of paper) but he has great study packets with tons of practice problems. Also watch youtube videos to pass!
Dr. Thomas is a nice guy, he's very passionate about what he does. However, the online teaching is just not for him, he has issues with canvas quizzes occasionally. His handwriting during his lectures is almost impossible to read but he tries. Is probably a great professor to have for in-person instruction.
Professor Thomas was a nice guy, and very smart, but half the time I couldn't understand his hand writing and he went very fast. Also, there were so many pop quizzes and the questions on those quizzes felt like things we had never learned in class. He did care a lot though, and he was very funny.
He's so so nice, but could organize the material differently. I found out he didn't teach us everything in Gen Chem 1 when I began Gen Chem 2 because he frequently falls behind. He does curves which is nice, but the exams are quite difficult. It always helps to seek out tutors, they were my saving grace in my chem classes.
you honestly would've thought this guy is still living in like 1950 or something. not great with technology but he's a nice guy. i wouldn't recommend asking him any questions bc he probably won't give you an adequate response. i had him for recitation and he didn't teach a thing. it was fine though bc we got to leave class early after check points
Took him for a transfer seminar. He was a nice guy as everyone else mentioned, but other than him just reading from the PP that the student instructor made and doing some in class activities, it was a laid back class. As long as you attended the class often enough for them to recognize your face and turn in most of the assignments, you're good.
I had him for recitation for gen chem I. He's a funny and engaging professor and gave a lot of oppertunity to make up points for quizzes. He took late work as well. I disliked the structure of the class though and it was very out of pace with the lecture of the class.
I had Dr. Thomas as my recitation instructor for Gen Chem I, and I would 100% take him again. He treats all students equally and is respectful and inclusive of students who identify as LGBTQ+. By far one of my favorite professors.
Dr. Thomas is the best! One of the easiest science courses I've taken. He tells you exactly what will be on every exam and questions are basically the same questions we do in class but with different numbers. Office hours every day and a Zoom final review on the weekend. Plus 25 points extra credit. As long as you try/do practice problems, easy A!
