Deadpan, but incredibly funny
boring monotone for 2 hours of hell. you cant concentrate of stay awake
BEWARE OF CAPTAIN GRAMMAR!
Appreciate Professor Weiss - he is a very good teacher.
wouldn't know a well written essay if it bit him in his big nose

His lecuture are funny & informative, he's very enthusiastic & interesting
Most sarcastic, socially inept person I have ever had the displeasure of knowing.

completly average proff. He knows his stuff, his lectures are sometimes clear sometiems not, and he is friendly if you aproach him. The books were good though

Knows his Sci-Fi (he writes some too). Very intelligent, though a hard marker because he expects the best from his students. Provide interesting lesson plans and reading materials in adequate amounts.
A few interesting lectures. Hard to talk to, he's very smug. Thinks he is smarter than he actually is.

Best professor ever. Not an easy marker, but I rather liked him. We got along really well, and he was extremely helpful. He's not socially inept, he's just socially different - a lot like me, I suppose.
Great class. Good material. Very funny, just remember to turn off your cell phone or face the wrath of the "Celliminator"! Really knows his stuff.
I feel sorry for anyone who did enjoy his classes. As basic as English gets. Covers very little context and spends too much time on content. Isnt that the purpose of a TUTORIAL? Do we not have brains? Oh and btw, from someone whos cell phone was a
Best Teacher Evar
Very intelligent prof! Very funny and sarcastic! I LOVE the lectures, but I don't like the tutorials (but I guess it's not his fault, cos he doesn't lead the tutorial).
Weiss is an arrogant, apathetic lecturer. His extensive pauses between phrases are left for you to bask in his excellence, and they are horribly frequent. He is unbalanced, and recently destroyed a cell phone with a hammer in class because it rang...
He gives me hope that there is humour left in all the prof's who seem like they should already be buried.
Very smart man, with sharp wit. I've enjoyed every one of his lectures.
So long as you keep your cell phone quiet, Professor Weiss is an exceptional lecturer. He goes into great detail about the various concepts that are encountered; however, he does tend to repeat himself week after week.
Very hard marker. But I think hes one on my favourite profs. He knows his stuff and trys to make tutorials fun.
Too bad a complaint stopped him from destroying more cells. Get them all! Damn things!!! Great Prof
good prof. not a good human being.. destroyed someones phone! among other things.
Great lecturer. Interesting, clear and humourous. Lecture topics are relevant and although it is a 2200 course provides excellent information for any english major also. Great course with very interesting readings!
Easily the worst course I have taken at University with an even worse professor. Stay away from this class!
Interesting class. Witty professor. Although, he is a little freakish regarding cell phones, which is more than scary.
Weiss aka "Grammer Man" talks more about context than an actual work or writer. He is also kinda funny in a Wierd Al sort of way (you'll see what i mean). The readings were excellent. *Keep your cell phones on silent.. dont say i didnt warn you.
VERY hard marker, but overall a decent teacher. would prefer it if he dropped the snobby attitude, and marked a little more fairly.
He's wonderful at lecturing... always keeps me focused and interested, love the subtle humor!
terrible
excellent choice of readings...lectures are informative and delivered with sublte humour that's quite entertaining. he's a funny man. love the clips. loved the tutorial...hint hint..take the last tutorail group
Hard marker but smart guy, knows his stuff
Most difficult marker ever! This is _picky_ about grammar in essays, and I'm no slacker when it comes to English! Regardless, he's an awesome lecturer and his lectures were always interesting. Excellent choice in readings too.
Great lectures (had T.A. cant rate his tutorial). Something sorta Woody Allen about him: mildly creepy, somehow charming, but decidedly brilliant. He really knows his stuff and conveys it to the student effectively.
This guy was just mean...He completely turns you off from the learning experience. It just feels like a waste of time. He is unforgiving and cruel...Eager to pick on a student in class. He is weird about cellphones and tough on grading. Most important reason not to take this class- "A" students risk "c's". Its just not worth the aggravation.

the cousrse material is awsome, but the prof ruined it. the lectures have nothing to do with the material of the course. I went to only a few lectures but went to all me tutorials and still ended up with an A. take the course for the material not for the prof.
What a fantastic class. His grammar rap...I don't think any prof can beat that. He could sell that and I would buy it! I have so many notes from his class because everything was interesting and I wanted to think about it all after. A great prof.
Poor marker. Can't justify the marks he gives. Attributes poor marks to style. On another note, I could not stand his speech inflections. His humour was childish and the class nervously laughed as to not make him feel bad.
I took this class two years ago. His lectures were fairly interesting...But he destroyed a student's cell phone with a hammer in front of the entire class--BEWARE!! I don't think he's mentally stable.
Pretty good prof. Provides interesting material and knows it very well.
Good guy, helpful, clear. Grammar Nazi will drop your mark a full grade per paper because of style etc. His humour is definately not for everyone but it isn't something that would scare you from coming to class, he's really a nice guy, just a little odd at times.
i think he's a good prof. and a fair marker - AND you'll actually learn proper English grammar, which, i think is the whole point of taking an english class(the actual course topic, like apocalyptic sci-fi, is just to make it more fun)!
One of the greatest profs I had. He knows his material backwards and his lectures are always interesting. He clearly loves what he does and is quite helpful and approachable, even though he tends to be quite sarcastic. Tutorials were always interestign as well and promotes discussion. He's quite funny. Don't treat him as if you're afraid of him.
Great professor. Everyone can tell that he loves what he does, but if you want an easy mark don't be in his tutorial. Grammar Man will go crazy on your essays. The highest mark I have seen is a B.
Great and passionate about science fiction!
This Prof is awesome. Knows his stuff to the tees. He's super helpful and makes the classes really interesting. He's one of the best profs i've had at York. the only bad thing i would say about his is that he teaches waaayyyy too much grammar, but it doesn't matter anyway cause the T.A. marks everything :)
Very charming and funny.
It was an excellent survey of the major authors and literary movements in Canada. I loved the multifaceted approach to the texts that foregrounded the intellectual and political currents operative in the texts. The lectures were dense and clear and provoked thought when applied to course essays. The lectures complimented the essays and exams well
Weiss is a smart, funny man who knows Can. Lit. as well as anyone. He can talk like an encyclopedia on the subject. If you take this course you will leave it with much to take to other courses. The T.A., Melissa Dalgleish, was temperamental but she is one smart lady who has alot to help you with. Good luck to all (Nothing personal Melissa).
What an amazing professor. I had 0 interest in Can Lit, but I loved this course. He seems a bit cranky at first but he's very understanding and kind if you approach him. Lots of readings, and I actually liked most of them. Crystal clear, engaging, funny, great prof. (NO CELLPHONES, seriously)
Prof Weiss is a very smart prof and the novels/short stories we had to read were very interested. He is however a difficult marker.
Very interesting to listen. Gives a lot of background information which is important to understanding the time-frames of the novels and their significance in that period.
I had this professor for both Canadian Fic. and Apoc. Sci Fi. He is knowledgeable in both subject and makes learning the material very interesting. While he is a hard marker he is also funny and a great professor.
Amazing prof. His lectures are clear and interesting. He made Canadian fiction more interesting. You have to attend his lectures though. He has tons of info in them. Disappointing he didn't lead a tutorial!
Weiss is an excellent prof who is very knowledgeable about his subject. He selects interesting readings and is a very engaging speaker. He is a tough marker, so stay out of his tutorial if you want an A!
I can't comment on professor Weiss as a marker and as a TA, but as a lecturer, he is one of York's absolute best. His knowledge of and enthusiasm for his subject matter makes EN 3172 a very enjoyable course. While his choice of TAs leaves something to be desired, Weiss himself seems like a good guy, and he's hilarious to boot.
Great prof, willing to assist you if you look for it. Always in his office, go see him. Good reading material. Avoid his tutorial -- he's a hard marker.
His lectures are great. He's informative, entertaining, and tests you on pretty much only what he teaches. Makes you think with his writing assignments. Really matters how helpful your TA is.
Good prof! Very knowledgeable and thorough. His reading selection was excellent. He has a dry sense of humour. If you have him for tutorial, make sure you go. Go to his office hours, he's helpful. He's a very hard marker.
Not very concise despite asking for his papers to be as much. He rarely gives valuable feedback and expects his grammar corrections to be suffice. If you do not participate in his class, he seems less likely to help you. He goes into far too much detail about history rather than the readings and how these two connect. Would not recommend.
he's a nice guy, but expects your grammar to be perfect. incredibly hard marker, lecture material isn't even apart of the exam, and does not clearly explain readings. he focuses way too much on the history and background of the text, rather than the text itself.
You must attend his lectures. His lectures are still interesting though, just make sure to take notes. He also HATES it when phones go off in class. If your phone goes off, he will kick you out. If he's the one grading your papers, be careful with your grammar because he's very picky. Take into consideration, he has a website called Grammarman.
His lectures are pretty useless, they're pretty much the background of the works that you'll be reading throughout the semester. Not really necessary to have a good understanding of the novels. Gradesaver and Sparknotes helps big time.
One of the worst professors at York. He makes a first year general elective course into a nightmare by assigning a (lengthy) novel each week, in addition to course kit readings and dedicating his lectures solely to irrelevant background info. He also seems to be on a power trip and quite psychologically unstable. Avoid his lectures/tutorials!!!!!!
There is a course kit and a few short story collections for this class, his lectures are not only focused on the historical background of the texts irrelevantly, he does a great job connecting themes and important concepts from the text and how the background information is relevant to such. he will actually dissect the important quotes.
EN 2174 is a great course. As knowledgeable as he is, Prof Weiss can be a bit dry at times but does his best to make jokes every so often. Btw... all the history you learn in lecture won't be on the final. Just provided as context to help you understand texts. Tutorials easy participation marks, TAs are tough markers but don't get discouraged!
Woodsworth College is a binary class after the referendum of 2020. All academic students are welcome on an as needed basis. Holy Trinity College is an admissions to theology at St Michael's College 20£3. Our students are from the faculty of Nursing, Law, & Medicine at U of T 202p. Thank you for your attendance at Hart House and can't wait to have y
Most inconsistent marker I've encountered, and definitely has a huge ego to mask his fragile insecurity. Not to mention his weird alter ego for grammar corrections? He missed as many classes as I did. Overall the course content makes up for this somewhat, but prepare to be slaughtered academically for what should've been a reasonable course.
This professor is hilarious, helpful, and amazing! Would definitely take him again!!!
His marking is so hard to understand!! He hates a lot of the common essay phrases but doesnt let you know that until he marks it and takes grades off if he doesnt like ur word choice? I lost 30% on an assignment bc I used words like state instead of says or my concluding paragraph with in conclusion VERY CONFUSING!
Not a good experience at all. Very angry and grumpy. Not allowed to use certain words in essays like states and makes up rules that we are expected to follow without clear direction. His need for perfect grammar is very odd and even if u follow everything, trust me, he will find mistakes. Not recommend. Look for other profs trust me
Try your best to stay away from this professor. Even if you follow everything that is stated on the rubric, its still some how not enough and your marks will suffer. Very rude professor that loves putting people down. Worst experience I have had so far!!!!! STAY AWAY !!!!!!
Lectures are useless since he talks about things that aren't on the final exam. Only went to tutorials and didn't feel like I missed anything. Some texts are very lengthy and you can get away with not reading most of them. From the few lectures I went to he cracked some jokes that didn't land and spoke a lot about grammar.
I would stay away from this professor. Weirdly, he seems to have a very fragile ego which he makes up for by picking on his students. None of his lectures helped to get better grades. In them, he tries to pass off his opinions as fact and usually aren't on topic at all. Only take the course if you like to read a lot and are excellent at English.
Don't bother taking a course with him. Wants you to write specifically how he wants it, and has no wiggle room. Goes back on things you would have learned in other English classes. Gives a week to read novels, and lacks consideration. He marks extremely harshly and does not give back notes on the Eclass like every other professor I have ever had.
I have an 80 or above in all my English classes but a low 60 in this one. He is insanely anal about grammar and makes up rules where he sees fit. He will take off marks if you disagree with his opinions, even if you can validate your opinion with quotes from the book. He is insulting and rude often. Do your GPA a favour and take another course.
I loved learning from Dr. Weiss, and I found his lectures to be extremely engaging and exciting. He's clearly very passionate about sci-fi and its value to literature, which really enhanced every conversation we had. His reading choices were excellent, too! Yes, he's a tough marker, but he will sit down with you one-on-one to help you succeed!
Unfunny, talks about history the entire time and gives no insight into the course content.
While it's clear Weiss is passionate about the things he talks about, the lectures and the readings are not engaging and at times outright weird. it feels like an expensive uninteresting book club with info dumping. He may be helpful if you go to him, but more often than not, he carries a judgy demeanour. If that is intentional, I don't know.
A big ego and enjoys being persnickety and judgmental. Talks about grammar all the time. If you disagree with his opinions about texts, get ready for a very judgy look and a weird one word remark. Some of the texts are also perverted, which he seems to enjoy. Likes to say only "educated" people will understand certain things. Not a good class.
Allan is deeply passionate about his field of study; however, I do believe his teaching style is too anti-tech. He HATES AI and makes it apparent, but his hate for AI stems to technology as well, which makes students with accommodations for technology inexcusable. 5 novels, 400+ pages all set to read second half (not fair) 3 poems 5+ stories
Allan talks way too much about the social issues happening during the timeframe of the text rather than what the text is actually about. Participation was worth 20% (ridiculously high). He only uses bullet point outlines of his lectures notes, nothing in detail about the text. The course is boring and he's a hard grader. I wouldn't recommend him.
Allan talks way too much about the social issues happening during the timeframe of the text rather than what the text is actually about. Participation was worth 20% which is extremely high for a 2nd year course. He lectures for the entire lecture with very little room to ask questions. The course is boring and he's a hard grader.
