Awesome! One of my favs so far. Funny, interesting, helpful, and projected a laid-back atmosphere. Goes a little fast sometimes but will always answer questions. Easy to look at too.
Allan Wright is a engaging and interesting teacher. He likes to joke, and the overall attitude of the class feels like high school again. He is very interested and knowledgeable on religion, but he is specialized in Christianity. Very good class, I enjoy it every morning.
Loved his class! I took it for an art elective and didn't regret it. The information was interesting and he has a lot of lame jokes that are still somehow funny to go with it. Quizzes are pretty easy and he marks papers easy, as well.
I didn't attend the class often but when I did the information was very clear and Allan was always making jokes. All the notes were online. This is the most helpful professor I had, if you have a problem he'll help you to fix it. No matter how huge your mistake is, he will help you through it. He literally saved my grade after I messed up hard.
Allan is a great prof! He is really fast in replying to emails, and is always very helpful and understanding. I would totally recommend taking his class.
Great guy! Very funny, gives clear notes, and is obviously engaged. However, he goes through some of the topics a little too fast sometimes.
Very easy. Too bad I didn't show for class but his notes were super easy so was his test. I hardly paid attention and still got an A. But would love to take him again.
Great prof. He's extremely helpful and understanding and he doesn't assign work that he knows his students wont be able to do. He's really funny and makes the class a lot more interesting when he talks about what we're learning. Awesome prof!
He's really great at getting people interested in the material! He makes it fresh, interesting, and has videos to show every class. The only thing I would say is to watch out for his tests, they are VERY detail-oriented, rather than focused on general topics.
Hardest intro class I've ever taken. The tests require basically memorizing all of the notes you take(which are a lot) because its mostly written response and long answer questions. Would have been a great class if the tests weren't so ridiculously tough.
Very good.
Professor Wright was a great prof. His class was very interesting, and relatively easy. There were 2 midterms, 2 papers (both about 3-5 pages long), and a final, so plenty of opportunities to change your grade. I didn't touch the textbooks once, all exams were based solely on lecture materials. Good class and great prof!
Final exam isn't cumulative but the papers (2) are quite long. Good sense of humour.
He is an amazing prof. Really chill and super understanding . Although there is quite a lot of work involved in this class (2 midterms 2 papers+final) it was not super challenging. All of his exams are fair as well. Highly recommend him
Amazing class! His slides have many beautiful pictures of the things we are learning about. In addition there are many short videos to watch based on the content of discussion. It is because of this the class is extremely enjoyable, original, and informative! AW is extremely funny and laid back. High grade is in your favor with a respective effort!
Wright is the man if you want to get interested in Religious Studies. Looks like a Greek philosopher with a touch of Hip, of course. Very clear, funny and easy. Irrespective of his personal thoughts/ideas which he did share, he made sure the class was respectful of all religions discussed. Very broadminded and always had personal examples to share.
Tests are fair, 90 percent consisting of explaining bolded terms and writing general info on larger topics. R
He is okay, funny and nice, good grader if you study well. He is funny but sometimes fakes information and he gets caught, specially if you know other languages you can catch him (or maybe the course content is just wrong) , he is available and replies to emails, that helps with assignments if you have questions, the books were useless I never used
He is an excellent prof who is very knowledgeable about all religions to some degree despite the fact that his area of expertise is Christianity. He makes class fun and engaging. He tried to start many discussions and it was very interesting. I would highly recommend taking a class with him. Its easy and engaging.
He's a good prof who is knowledgeable about various religions and does his best to explain everything in concise detail even though these religions were not his area of expertise. He is a nice guy who is willing to help. Would gladly take a class with him again.
The was on a waitlist to get into this class but it was worth it. My first RELIG class and Allan's teaching was so good that I'm hooked. Pay attention to the slides and all bold terms in the textbook and you will do fine. He is accessible outside class and is a good lecturer.
Allan's class was an easy A and he's great for introductory classes. All quizzes are lecture heavy but they're no hard as long as you focus on the bolded terms on his slideshows. He is accessible outside of class and replied super fast with e-mails. All tests are not cumulative and you can always make up for a bad grade in the next assignment.
average prof
By far my favourite class and professor this year. Taking more relig classes now.
Amazing!!!! One of the best!! Made in think of monsters and evil differently. Really want to take more classes with him and religion now.
Amazing class. Allan is passionate about the subject area. He is really engaging and his lectures were enjoyable. Got to write 3 papers on any media concept involving monsters/evil. Gives you exam essay questions in advance. Great guy, hope he gets the opportunity to teach this course again. He's also a babe, like a grunge/rock n roll Jesus ;)
Allan is a great professor. His lectures are really interesting and can explain concepts well. Lots of in-class discussions that are really beneficial to learning the material. Midterms are easy, mostly multiple choice and fill in the blank. However, we had to write 2 papers and the final consists of 2 essays, so there's lots of writing.
Really good prof! The quizzes are very easy with some studying and consist of just multiple choice and fill in the blank. The final had two essays but they were not very difficult. Definitely taking more classes with him!
Easy class. Material is meh (didnt retain anything). If you want a prof that doesnt care about you or doing his job, hes your guy. Guess when its not CR/NCR, that means his easy 10min exams will be a godsend, but he put in 0 effort to actually finish the course once we went online. Also, marks paper style material harsh and unreasonable.
Super interesting course, as I've always been interested in ancient Egypt, magic, and Witches. His lectures are well organized, and all you have to really do is know the general history, and read the readings assigned. Write down anything relevant to the assignment question and you're good to go!! Bless no exams
Allan's lectures were short and sweet. If you grasped the (easy) material, great! But if you needed more clarification he was always willing to discuss. No textbook or extensive weekly readings. Would take again, and would recommend this class to others. Seems like a cool guy.
Relig 274 is the second class I've taken with Allan and he remains my favourite prof. He explains things in a way that are easy to understand and makes it fun. He's an easy marker and he's very lenient, always willing to give you extra time if you need it. You can tell he knows what he's talking about but he's not intimidating at all.
He changed the grades from the first assignment at the end of the semester without telling anyone, which obviously sucked. There were only 3 assignments which would've been nice had he given more than a weekend to do them. He replied quickly to emails but had pretty tough grading on assignments that were worth a lot.
Several days after the final assignment was due, he stealthily lowered everyone's Assignment #1 marks by 10% without telling anyone, thus curving many people's grades down by around a whole letter grade. The reason he cited: "the average for the 1st assignment was too high compared to the average for the other 2 assignments."
3 assignments (30%/30%/40%) posted on Friday, due the following Monday. So it really sucked if you were busy that weekend. Lectures were pre-recorded 15 min videos (some days had no videos). Didn't like how he cut the video short even if he was in the middle of a point just to keep it under 15 mins, and didn't pick up from there in the next video.
Took this class because it was gonna be my easy elective but all the assignments except the 1st were marked super harshly with vague feedback. And then at the end he curved the grades down for Assignment 1 for everyone. I was super close to a B+ but he wouldnt round up :(
Best Prof I've had in the two years I've been at the U of A.
Lectures were entertaining and informative. 3 assignments no exams (most only needed lecture material and just skimming a couple of the papers.) The lack of transparency was a HUGE downside didn't tell anyone he took 10% off everyone's grade for the first assignment at the very end of the semester for no reason. Had to email him to find out
Allan was a good prof! All his lectures are pre-recorded so you can watch them whenever works best. The course content is very interesting- I would definitely recommend you take this class if you can!
couse content was interesting but lectures kinda got monotonous after a while. pro was that they were recorded so you can binge watch them at the end if you want (but not recommended!). no live zoom meetings at all. assignments weer posted friday and due monday so plan your time accordingly
The Monsters course was the best class I've ever taken! Really interesting!
This course was completely disorganized. The prof may be nice but the assignments were brutal. I don't know what happened between the fall semester and winter semester but this time around it was much more difficult. NOT A GPA BOOSTER PLEASE AVOID TO SAVE YOUR GPA.
This class had major transparency issues. Assignments were marked with no released rubric, essay questions were asked about topics barely covered in class, and feedback on these assignments was unhelpful. However, if you do not care about your GPA, take this course as the content is great... the same cannot be said for this course's structure...
Great class and prof. Explained things really well. If you are looking for a simple GPA bump without doing any work you might be in trouble. If you put in some time, it is a great experience.
if you want no rubrics, unclear instructions, no example papers, and having to write a lot of written assignments on obscure topics barely covered in class (i'm taking glossed over in under 2 minutes), then this is the one for you!
I liked the course content, but grading is not transparent. All of our mark was based on assignments where we were supposed to delve into content barely mentioned in our 2 15 minute lectures a week. When I asked for clarification on my marks and advice, both he and the T.A. did not even do me the courtesy of looking at my paper. Very disappointed
The content of this course was interesting, but the issue was the assignments. No rubric or outline of what they wanted other than a couple broad questions to answer (usually with spelling errors). No helpful feedback, even when you email directly. These were the only evaluations in this course and there was no effort put into them. Disappointed.
I had heard it was interesting and on the lighter side. However, the arbitrary marking of this term and the vague feedback just took anything enjoyable out of it. Allan is a good prof, his lectures are great, so I was quite disappointed in how this course went. Mainly because it was one I was doing for my own enjoyment, but it really didn't go well
The Evil class is FANTASTIC!!! The University should offer it more I think. Allan is a clear and amazing lecturer. He is always willing to help if you are struggling. The assignments were interesting since you get to pick things you enjoy to study. Definitonity A+
Dr. Wright saved my grade. I struggled with the first assignment and then reached out to get some help. He was more than willing to meet through zoom and go over my assignment and gave me tips to improve. THANK YOU DR. WRIGHT!!
Great professor. Very helpful and his teaching was informative.
I liked Allan, but he wasn't amazing or anything. 2 assignments, 1 take-home final & 10% class participation. He graded fairly and provided lots of excellent information. Textbook not necessary. He only gives feedback on assignments if you ask for it. Overall he's fine, but I thought it could have been better (ex. more recent events & inclusivity).
Super good guy. Loved the class and the lectures, material, and so on. He will help explain further if you don't understand something, even though email. I recommend, definitely.
Great at explaining difficult topics. Great at explaining, and respecting different view points as well.
Excellent choice. Guy is getting review bombed by a couple unhappy people. If you don't agree with the TA grade, talk to him, he will help you through it, at least he did for me, helped me tremendously. Super friendly and understanding as well.
His notes were a little all over the place. Some of the material seems a little outdated. I feel like he couldve done a better job including more recent events and explaining complex ideas.
Not sure what happened with the online classes but in person Allan is a great prof. Lectures and notes and everything is top notch. I will definitely be taking more classes with Allan!
The man is a master of the craft. Understanding and gives great lectures.
I had to drop this class. Dr. Wright is all over the place. He was late for class and unprepared. His recorded lectures were amateurish, of bad audio quality, and replete with grammatical mistakes. You can get a sense from the syllabus that this class has no clear path forward. Although he seems like a nice guy, I think hes very disorganized.
The course is so disorganized, no rubric for assignments/exams, dont know what he is looking for, marking is vague and does not help much, and general info about exams (time, what to look out for in general) is not posted anywhere in eClass, the only info you have about exams is the date, he tells you in class, but that info should be in syllabus
If you want an amateur 20 min per week lectures with low grade, disorganized instructions full of mispronunciations and divisive rhetoric that hardly cover even the smallest segment of exam requirement take it. If it was not middle of a term I would quit it in a flash.
listen to the other ratings on here if it's the last thing you do. As a fourth-year student I have never been in such a disorganized class that I would have immediately dropped had I known earlier. Not only are the lectures amateurish and full of typos, but the assignments also have no grading criteria or direction and no feedback. Avoid.
DO NOT take class with Professor Wright. His lectures are confusing and have spelling mistakes/grammatical errors. He refuses to give a rubric to know the basis on which you are assessed and graded, literally NO grading criteria. Comments on grading are not clear. This class could be good if it wasn't for the lack of effort from the professor.
Should've dropped this class when I saw it was with this professor. This class could be so much better had it been with a different prof. Nearly impossible to know how to achieve a good grade when there is absolutely no grading criteria or rubric given. Tough grader too. Lectures have truly taught me nothing. Just avoid avoid avoid!
He's great. Ask him if you need help, he's always willing, gives extensions too. Avoid if you don't want to take religion classes from a historical and critical view. If you want confirmation take someone else. He's getting review bombed, the complaints are ridiculous.
I'm honestly just super disappointed with this class/professor. Truly unsure how to do well on his style of midterms when there is no grading criteria and no clarification on formatting and expectations on exams/papers. Grading seems super random and biased as well.
9.5/10 rounded up. The most understanding and helpful teacher I have had, seriously. Lol, he's not getting review bombed, it's just a couple people trolling him. For those bitter, grow up and just drop the class.
Perhaps avoid looking at reviews with just a rating and no comments. Students who are actually genuinely disappointed with this professor's instruction will voice that. So-called 'review bombing' is not really a thing as students can be as critical as they wish on the USRI. Previous reviews are factual, believe me.
Now I rwalize why the faculty gets no funding. Gotten 4.0 in all my classes in the last 4 years and he managed to ruin that streak. Ta horrible. Lost most marks for spelling mistakes
I really liked him. I would suggest to try and you will probably be surprised how great he teaches and actually gets students to think. I know A LOT of my fellow classmates feel similar.
It's clear from these comments who actually goes to class and engages with the material. If you don't like to question things or critically think, then yeah don't take him
A joke of a class. Material was unfocused and poorly delivered, with not only eye wateringly boring delivery, but ineffective in insight into the subjects. Marking was also of a terrible quality, done by a TA that has no business grading anything. An easy class, but not worth any time and effort if you hope for anything more than that.
Best class I have taken at uni. A TA usually does all the marking but speak to him if something isn't clear. He is very willing to help.
I'm surprised at some of the low ratings. The Evil, Monsters, and Religion class was superb. I have nothing negative to say about the class or Allan himself. My experience was nothing but positive and I will be taking future classes with Allan.
I wish I could take all my classes from him. I have taken a couple of classes and they are always so good.
My favorite class in university. The class and prof Allan is funny, smart, and entertaining.
This is honestly the best class I have taken in University and I am in my third year. Dr. Wright is right up with the best prof I have had. Take it if you can.
Prof Allan Wright is just good at what he does. His lectures push you to think critically, and he is quite an understanding and good fellow.
I loved Alan, he was such a great professor! the class was so interesting and Alan is so passionate about it all. take this class if you can!
The man is an incredible teacher. Go to class; he makes the material so much more interesting and relatable. I loved his style and humor.
For the most part, class time does not matter, all of his lectures are posted word for word on his eclass. The class was very interesting, and he was very knowledgeable, but the marking did not seem completely fair. Multiple times throughout the semester things had to be re-graded because of errors.
Yep, as others have said, he is a great prof, in fact, he is one of the best.
He slays
Super nice, great prof. Interesting class. Assignments and tests are completely reasonable. His lectures don't go far off the slides but he does give out important info during class regarding tests & doesn't put the announcement on eclass so going to class really helps with that. Really accommodating when asking questions about assignments/marks.
Allan is a king. Super knowlegeable about all topics, and his lectures were very interesting. Only thing I didn't like was grades/announcements were not posted in Eclass. Go to his lectures, funniest and most interesting class ever and he makes it easy to understand. Attendance not mandatory but he mentions lots about the testing in class.
Dr. Wright was a very down to earth prof. He gives his slides but most of the valuable info he gives is in his lectures (off slide material). He is very knowledgeable and loves class discussions. 10/10
Every lecture vid was from 2021 or older the entire term. Vague vids that ended abruptly with "we'll discuss in the Zoom", which didn't happen b/c it was asynch. + there was no 1 time that worked for all. Didn't post any info re: final until the week of, and only gave 12 hrs for an assignment despite being asynch. Also had some incorrect material.
Overall a very chill and nice guy, clearly knows his stuff about religious studies, however I wasn't a fan of the testing formats as the content which we would need to know for the test was unclear and the formatting of each test was also unclear. Really need to read the notes and the specific concepts in the notes although there are many.
Genuinely really amazing such a great prof cant wait to take his other classes! His lectures were well crafted and informative, his tests were super easy if you attended the lectures and basically look over the notes prior. Would recommend love him!
Allan is a GEM!! His classes are the best, super interesting and you can tell he enjoys doing what he does which really does make a difference. Only slight con is that your mark only comes from 3 things, making each of them worth a lot. But his lectures really make up for this!
Dr. Wright is a very chill person and I appreciated his humour in lectures. The course was made up of 2 midterms, a paper, and a final. To get a better grade, make sure to explain WHY terms/concepts are important on exams, not just stating WHAT they are. It seems important to make your voice clear in your work. Overall, interesting and fun class.
His lectures were extremely enjoyable! I took this class as a night class, and he made the 3 hours bearable, providing breaks throughout. Class is graded on 2 midterms, a final, and a media assignment. I found the assignment was a bit harshly graded for how little info was provided on the rubric, but everything else was reasonable. A great prof!
Allan is such a caring and understanding professor. He is so easy to follow. His class encourages active participation. Take notes in class from students' participative answers he affirms, and use them in answering his questions. He enjoys critical and creative thinking.
The best teacher I have had.
Allan is a very caring and excellent prof. If I was earlier in my undergrad, I would have taken many more courses from him.
Wonderful prof, explains concepts very clearly, so caring and knowledgeable. Most of the class consists of group discussion which makes it very engaging. 3/5 though, because his grading criteria is very unclear and he expects very specific information like dates and such in exams, but doesn't make that clear. Also posts nothing on eClass
My main issue was that the grading criteria was not made clear enough, at least in my opinion. There was no specific grading rubric used, so you weren't totally sure what exactly was expected of you on the midterms/papers. The questions that you will write about on the final are provided a week before the exam, so that was nice.
Professor Wright is very good and genuinely caring. His lectures are engaging, clear, and you can tell he's very passionate about the material he teaches. The class is straightforward, and it's not hard to get a good mark. However, the TA was a bit of a letdown impacted my marks. There's no rubric for the class.
He's a very engaging prof and very understanding, he made class super fun. Grading was harsh and didn't come with grade criteria or a rubric so it made things a bit harder than necessary in my opinion. Just go to class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Wright's classes are the endlessly entertaining and informative! Take him for anything if you can!
Prof. Wright makes this class super engaging. Attendance is key, as he shares important test info in lectures. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for reviewing concepts. Overall, an interesting and enjoyable course.
Dr. Wright is amazing! His class is super engaging, and he makes even a 3-hour lecture fly by. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his lectures help a lot, especially since the exams are fully written. He's approachable, gives great feedback, and truly cares about his students. If you get the chance to take a class with him, do it—you won't regret it!
Really funny and nice guy, assigns lots of readings that you need to do if you want to do well on the midterm and final. Kind of hard to understand what he is saying on feedback. Lots of material is in what he says in lecture, slides and not great.
My favourite class this semester and it's not even close. I wish I could take more.
He is fantastic! A real gem
