This was a fun and interesting class, focused on argument and writing. The textbook was crap, but the instructor only used it as an auxiliary. He focused on current event, often political, and encouraged debate. He is fair and objective. I highly recommend him.
Prof. Andersen is a great teacher! The class was really disruptive, but he still maintained the integrity of the class. I learned alot from him. I even got A's in my other classes due to what I learned in his class. If your writing skills aren't up to speed, take him, pay attention, attend class every day, and you will succeed in college.
He's a very laid back teacher and extemely nice.
Fair, friendly and helpful. His class was interesting and I learned a lot. Would take him again.
VERY NICE TEACHER...try to sit in front of the class...its very hard to hear him talk if youre sitting in the back...he's a lil boring, so you'll get distracted easily, try not to
What the hell,it sounds like fun! I would take him again
Andersen is the easiest teacher ever! He just talks to the class the whole time.. some of the topics are intersting but for the most part i didnt pay attention. he likes to interact with his students and get to know them. he hardly ever gives homework and there arent many essays. an easy and fun A. Highly reccomend!!
He is a good teacher.
For the 205 class, there were five essays assigned. He is very picky in terms of what he wants from your papers (organization, analytical aspects etc). If it's not how he would write it, it seems like he picks your paper apart. Though, he attempts to challenge you. There are 3 novels to read, plus an argumentative writing book.
I don't know why a lot of people think he is easy. He grades really hard and leaves little comments on papers. There's a lot of HW. We had to read three ~300pages books and wrote 5 essays including final essay. The class was dry and boring.
Apparently, he teaches his lower div classes differently, because I hated his 205. His grading is completely incomprehensible, his lectures were tedious, and he assigned a LOT of essays along with quite a few in class quizzes. I won't say avoid him at all costs, but if you can go with another instructor I would if I were you.
OK everyone, his 205 class is a CRITICAL THINKING CLASS! This means one has to think for themselves, not just memorize and regurgitate information. Nobody holds student's hands at the Universities, so get used to it! As far as reading and writing a lot, again, this is a 200 level COLLEGE CLASS! God forbid students actually do some freaking work.
His class and lectures are a waste of time, he maked you read three novels + a textbook, and makes you write 5 essays including a research paper. Based on his easy but boring lectures you would think he could grade fairly easy. It's not until you get your first paper back that you realize why he allows his students to revise their essays for a bett
Easy, very easy, doesn't check h/w just gives numbers of h/w that u need to do. and all you do is put the score rate for every excise and give it back to him at the end of unit..
I had him for Eng 51 as well. I thought his class was easy, and he was clear on what he wanted. I would recommend him.
Grades beliefs and ideas, you're in trouble if they differ from his.
He is weird because if it doesn't fit what he wants, he doesn't go with it. This was a critical thinking class but with a lot of essays due, but I'm not sure that I grew from it. Sometimes he was not very clear on what he wanted and even when the class vocalized this, it didn't really change the fact we didn't know what he wanted.
If you want to gain knowledge on how to improve your writing skills and gain a better understanding of how to apply the rules of english, don't take this class. Although Professor Andersen is a nice person, he is not a good teacher. The book, homework, and lectures taught me nothing I did not know previously before taking the class. Also, he is
I don't know what these people are talking about, Prof. Andersen was a good teacher. I would definitally take him again. He's nice and will clarify things if you don't understand. Some people were being very disrespectful to him amd that's probably why they wrote bad reviews.
Great class, but a little tough. He is a good teacher but a little strict but I guess you have to be tolearn the material. I hated all the essay writings but it improved my writing ability.
This professor was awesome for eng50.. but he swears you mastered the technique of writing in eng205. It was really hard to know what he was asking for in our essays...His lectures are very interesting and thats the only reason why I liked the class. Attempt the essays at least 1 week prior its due date. He's a good guy, but it's a hard class.
All I can say is that he is not clear. He goes in too much details assuming the that the students know everything.
i was part of a learning community and he was the 2nd half of it. he dragged on and on about something he thought related to the student's question but it would not connect and this would last longer then 5 min. also, he wouls tell students that they are wrong for thinking something or say that your opinion is wrong to write about. papers were bad.
He is a fair professor. He is very healpfull. He tells you what he is looking for in your essay. His lecture is very helpful. I definitly take English 205 with him.
I thought that the lectures were pretty interesting but he wasn't a lot of help. He is unclear on what exactly it is that he wants and NEVER checks his e-mail. Essays are the most difficult part of the class because if you don't write what he thinks, you're wrong and your grade suffers.
He is somewhat fair. He talks too much sometimes. He doesn't really reply back in e-mails to let us know that he checked it. [usually its an auto-reply which I don't think is effective.] gives great in-class activities and is willing to help each students needs.
Not a helpful lesson at all. He rambles and is very byas on grading essay's. I would not recommend this teacher at all.

Old school re:grading,no excuses,in 8 week semester-write 4 major papers(STRICT MLA Style w/no guidance-Grading of the papers-extremely tough)and read 2 novels plus homework. Novels were great-some found it difficult to read 2 novels in 8wks. Couldn't get better than B on anything-ended up with B. If you take him Plan on doing work of 2 classes.
Not so great of a class. Very long and tedious. He doesn't really explain the assignments very well. Talks a lot. Not a bad guy, somewhat fair but a very harsh grader with essays. Does not take late reading responses. If you can't do a lot of things on your own, don't get him as a professor.
Easy. Do the homework. Write the essays. Go to class. This class is a piece of cake. Lectures are long and boring. He repeats himself a lot. He doesn't explain much and you can't really rely on him for any type of explanation. As long as you are capable of working on your own, this class will be simple.
Yikes. Tough teacher to please. If he does not like your topic, he won't grade you well. Essay's are graded harshly. Very hard to please. Boring lectures. The essay topics are very hard. I'm not the best English student and this class made it harder on me. Find a different teacher.
If you want to learn and understand ENG 205, don't enroll in his class. His explanation about your essays is very confusing, it's not direct to the point. If you don't need guidance, he's perfect for you.
SO BAD!!! AVOID! He grades thinking you have a PHD. He believes that he is always right and you can never have an A paper. Work as hard as you can and he will still give you no higher than a b-. Best of luck if you have him.
He is very emotional guy, his grate on you depend on he like you or not, most classmates have dropped from his class, and only about 15 students left in the class.
He gives A LOT of work but he is pretty clear about his expectations and gives students the option of correcting final papers for a better grade after he has graded them.
He's Excellent!
All i can say is on my first essay had it revised at the PLACe turned it in and got it back and i got a C on it. He grades as if you have the best experienced in writing. then he expects the class to help you revise your essay but thats prolly not a good idea since the highest grade he gives anyone is like a B-
Without a doubt the worst teacher on the planet, he will not help you if you need help and don't even think about getting an email reply. He also likes to make students feel stupid when they participate and continue to restate your answers as if it were his own. Avoid at all costs.
He's a nice guy. He just could not keep me interested in class at all and I love English. He's a hard grader when it comes to essays. He has high expectations and expects you to try you best. I wouldn't take anymore of his classes but he's an okay teacher. You either love him or hate him.
He is a wonderful professor! I have worked my way up to English 101. I ended up getting an A in his class. My first paper was a C but he edited my corrections and let me re-do my paper so I could get in A. He is friendly and if you care about your grade, he cares! He is a great professor!!!
Great teacher. My first college level english teacher. Took the course during the summer and he really make it enjoyable. Even said the first day that some days he might not want to teach b/c it's summer and it was true. Gave alot of free time to focus on work and even taught outside once. Really great professor overall.
Really harsh on essay. Went to the place and to the professor, and still got C. Push his opinion on your and he always right no matter what.
Explained everything relatively well. If you have a question ask and he will help you out. Helped me with my essay writing a lot in the class and it was pretty fun for a 3 hour lecture period.
There is a lot of out of class reading that is needed, and interesting in class discussions. Three major essays and two minor writing assignments. He does give homework, but the class is fairly easy and enjoyable.
He's the best! My confidence and ability have both benefited from this class. Don't slack off or skip assignments; but if you put in an honest effort, (and revise your essays) you'll be glad you did!
He is a nice guy, and he is very intelligent. He is a good writer and he loves the subject, but he's boring. He doesn't keep your attention well and he lectures in a monotone the whole time. Like I said, he's a nice guy- but if you want a teacher that is entertaining, he is not the guy for you.
Terrible teacher. He has never actually taught a single thing in class. He merely hand refers you to an extra book "Rules for writers 6th ed." and refers to different sections. Basically he is completely useless. He gives assignments and it turns out he does NOT read them unless it is an essay. Then he grades harshly for the smallest error.
Understanding and very nice. Taught me a lot of things. Answered all my questions. Helpful inside and outside of class. Definitely would recommend him.
Pretty good professor, I think he is fair and opinionated but hears others thoughts. Gave 2 tests, a midterm and final with hw included in an online format. I have to admit, I hardly tried in this class and didn't really even read and I'm expecting a high 'B' or 'A'. All you need is to go, take good notes and listen to the lecture to do well.
Not the most interesting lecturer, but his class is easy. It is obvious he cares about the subject, and wants to see what his students' input is. Keep essays on topic and follow what he says, they aren't that bad. The hardest part of the class is sitting there the entire time. The rest, at least give a small effort and you should get at a B.
Professor Andersen is a good professor and very helpful when you ask for it. He is very strict and gives alot of homework.
Professor Andersen is awesome! Just do the readings (you don't have to read too deep because he will go over it with you) and show up for class and take good notes. He obviously loves what he teaches and initiates good conversations regarding the pieces you read. Just pay attention and show up and you'll get an A.
if your ready for a harsh grader and a good amount of homework, go for it. He will not disappoint if you like a heavy work load :)
I'm surprised at how I ended up getting a B. This professor gives so much homework and I ended up not turning most of them in. Just make sure you submit the weekly vocab on time, always check the syllabus, and show up to class as much as you can.
I barely passed this professors class... I just seemed as if I could not meet "his" expectations... I went to the reading lab on all my essays and rewrote all of them and still barely passed with a 73% well I ended up taking English 101 nervously but I ended up pulling a high B in that class so obviously it was this professor not me
Was a tough class... I happened to get a low C but did everything I could... I went to the reading lab on all my essays and would even re-write them but I guess I didn't meet "his" standards. I ended up taking English 101 nervously the following semester and pulled off a high B so maybe it wasn't me
One tough professor when it comes to grading papers. I strongly suggest you revise each essay you get back and take it to "The PLACE" for extra help. He can be very hard to get a hold via email. You must send your emails between 11:30pm-4:30am that way it is at the top of his inbox if you want a response. Overall nice professor, but a lot of work.
Andersen completely changed my perspective on my writing, but not in a positive way. He is extremely discouraging and holds his students to an impossible standard. It seemed like my writing was just never good enough for him. His feedback is irrelevant and his homework is busy work. Most confusing and frustrating general ed class I've ever taken.
Only two tests (midterm and final). Participation does matter and although he may seem intimidating at times still try to express your opinions! Do the readings! there are quizzes almost everyday on the reading assigned - the points do add up! He is a great professor, makes the readings understandable and is insightful. Pay attention do the reading
REALLY hard grader. I got a 10 on SAT essay and this guy gives me 70%s. However, if you do the homework, which is super easy, it will offset his harsh grading. He seems a little narrow-minded; always finds a reason to disagree with you. He says participation sorta matters. no weighted categories. I ended english with a B and it wasn't that bad.
Professor Andersen is a really cool guy if you talk with him. He's funny and inquisitive. However, his lectures can be rather boring and he is an extremely tough grader. It helps if you write about his specific ideas from his lectures.
Very very tough grader. Don't lack on the weekly vocabulary stay on track with it. Be sure to do the readings because it is talked about in class. Be ready to some group work questions from the readings and peer reviews for your essays. Make sure you have about 3 copies of your essay and one for yourself. be ready for the 7-10 page research paper
Out of all the english classes I have ever taken, he is BY FAR the worst one I have ever had. He's tough on grading, good luck if you even get a C.
You can tell he's passionate about literature! He makes so many puns that it's so funny to just see him laugh at his own jokes. He's extremely informative and I used to hate reading until I took this class! The reading is difficult, but it is a difficult course anyway. He makes class fun and you really get a sense of his love for literature!
Prof Andersen is a really great teacher that cares about his students. He always gives great feedback and lets students revise their essays after he grades them for a higher grade. He lectures are really interesting and engaging. Make sure that you do the assigned reading each day.
A professor who definitely knows what he's talking about. Very passionate about English, got his masters in English which is pretty cool. Sometimes his lectures are boring. If you do the work in his class and try, then he'll be able to work with you and give you the grade you deserve. Overall a nice guy.
He's a great guy and tries to help his students out by having revisions of essays and individual conferences. He also has a lot of assignments to work on, but most of them are easy. However, he is a very hard grader when it comes to essays. I also learned a lot from his class because he is a good teacher.
Didn't like how hard he grades, now I feel like a much better writter. Really just a great guy with a passion for english. Definitly take him if you want to learn, if you want an easy A, don't.
Great professor! There was a lot of work (mainly papers) in the class, but just a little harder version of a High School Senior English Class. He does give great feedback on papers and if you go to talk to him in his office, he can help you on anything you might need help with.
Tough grader! Got D on all my essays. No one get A on their essays in his class. His feedback seemed biased. Get ready to read cuz there's quiz each class and he will call on you during discussion. Gotta define 5 vocals each week. 3 essay (3rd is final research paper) & 1 in class essay. 1 presentation at the end of semester. I don't recommend him
I did not like this professor. He constantly gives out busy work that doesnt benefit you & is such a tough grader. Yeah, its completely possible to get an A or a B but it was hard to stay motivated in his class because he was such a poor professor. I will never be taking one of his classes again.
One of the most interactive and passionate professors I've had the pleasure of having. He loves what he does, which makes for an incredibly positive learning environment. Your grade is completely up to you. As long as you follow direction and put forth the work, you will do great. Critical thinking is huge in this class.
During class this professor is terrible. All you do is talk. It's quite boring, and if you don't agree with him he will dock you points. However, if you go talk to him outside of class, email him, show an interest in the class he will help you out A LOT.
I took this class over summer, so it was pretty intense. Every class meeting covered one normal week's worth of material. Prof Andersen was extremely engaging & obviously enthusiastic about his subjects. Peer review wasn't helpful on essays due to differing skill levels. He was fair in his grading & helpful in notes on returned written pieces.
Did not enjoy at all
He is very well respected as a professional. As long as you pay attention in the class and stay on top of work, receiving an A should be no problem.
As expected of an English course, you are expected to read the assigned texts and understand them. There will always be assigned reading, as well as 2 discussion posts on Blackboard (one for each in-class day). As long as you participate in class, upload discussion posts on time, and closely follow essay prompts, this class will not feel unfair.
Really passionate about english. If you like english, you'll so want to take his class! I was really reminded why I'm majoring in english because of his class. At most our essays were three pages which was really lax for an english class and I hella appreciated that. Nice guy! Only got a C bc I misunderstood some due dates lol
This isn't a disgruntled student review. Unclear instructions and unrealistic expectations for a community college class. Students expected to read up to 30 pages for a simple homework assignment sometimes. Doesn't believe in giving A's. Bad at lecturing, too critical of essay's yet does not give clear feedback. Assigns too much for simple class.
Do not take unless you absolutely love English. Professor comes off as conceded, and very much in his own head. Does not believe in A's. Non clear feed back on essays. 30+ pages reading of small text on most homework assignments. Not familiar with technology. Bad at giving clear descriptions/directions of what he wants, yet grades over critically
There really isnt much good to say about this professor. Extremely narrow minded and unforgiving when it comes to grading essays. Terrible with feedback yet grades very harshly for introductory English course. Always looking for something more but does not specify what that more is. Do not take by any means unless youre a English pro.
Just pay attention, do your work on time, and ask for help when needed. Participating a lot is a factor to do well. This class basically feels like a high school English class. He is a tough grader, but your grade will be better if you go to him for help. He also offers extra credit, so be sure to do all of those. I don't understand the bad reviews
This guy clearly cares about english and knows what hes talking about, but the class has discussion boards due on short stories every class meeting, and theres a huge research paper for the final project. As a STEM major just trying to get my GE credits this class was a little ridiculous. If you love english, it's the class for you.
Gives so much homework and essays with little to no directions it was very frustrating. I'm someone who's never struggled in English but I didn't enjoy this class at all. It's extremely tedious for an English course and he assigns so many essays, grades them hard, and gives literally no feedback on what was wrong.
I took his ENGL101 class over the summer online. It was a lot of work between the readings, annotations and the essays. This class did however, under the guidance of professor Andersen, give me an incredible foundation for the rest of my classes moving forward. I highly recommend his classes. If you put in the effort you will be rewarded.
Awful teacher, lots of homework and essays, bias grading system
I think Prof. Andersen was a great professor. The class was very focused on working on your writing skills which was exactly what I was hoping for. One tip I really have is if you have any questions make sure to catch him after a class as it can be difficult to reach him through email or canvas.
I don't get the bad reviews, I really enjoyed this class. Professor Andersen is an amazing lecturer and has great slides and engages the classroom. On essays, he can be a tough grader, but he gives detailed feedback and you can revise the essay for a higher grade. Do the extra credit, the tasks won't take too much time out of your schedule.
Ill keep reviewing about this corrupt professor until my comment stays up. stop removing it! I reported him to the dean for refusing to answer my emails which he pulled me aside after class to berate me about, went back and changed a grade to an F, graded my assignments low not telling me why and giving me a D on the final refusing to tell me why.
This professor is not it. He assigns so many different assignments that provide no value to the class whatsoever. Would not take his class if I were you. Added unnecessary stress to my life.
If you have him in person, he rambles in his lectures and you don't really learn anything. He has you read online novels and gives you points based on how long you spend on them. When you don't show up to class, he assigns in class activities and grades them and doesn't give students who weren't there an opportunity to do it. Careless teacher
Cool guy, but is a very weird grader. No wiggle room for deadlines and the tasks can feel overwhelming. A lot of prerequisite paperwork to advance in the class. You'll be left behind pretty fast if you aren't on pace with his teaching.
Relatively easy class, but very difficult to reach outside of class due to not responding to emails/Canvas messages -- best bet is to ask a classmate instead (personal experience, at least). Coursework consisted of 3 essays which he allows resubmissions for a better grade + weekly assigned readings which you had to annotate + do vocab on.
Tough grader, but the workload helps build solid writing skills. Engage with the textbook and assignments, and use resources like unstuckstudy for study prep - it really saved me time and effort.
This class was a waste of time. The teacher didn't teach anything useful, and one time played an audio of sexual literature where after he saw "is it hot in here?" Weird. Grades were based only on essays, but we were never taught how to write them. I didn't learn anything, and the whole experience felt careless and unprofessional. Save yourselves
This teacher isn't respected by the class. Everyone was bored and not paying attention most of the time. He didn't really teach or help us learn, and I honestly didn't get anything out of this class besides credits. The grading was unclear, and the overall experience was frustrating and a waste of time.
Professor Allen isn't that bad. Do the readings, show up, and revise your first essay and you'll be fine. You'll spend a lot of time listening to him ramble, but his stories can be funny. Just know: if you dislike reading, long tangents, or putting extra time into English, he may not be the best fit.
