He makes all kinds of silly rules for essays... (like must have 5 similes, personifications, metaphors... etc) He goes over TONS of basic stuff... gets really boring. He wants people to be in class EVERY day, and he does NOT like it when people start packing up to leave before he ends the class...
YAWN!! A boring, self-important, little snob.

VERY boring. Almost fell asleep a couple times.

Dosen't like to give out A's, believes "theres no such thing as a perfect paper". If you want to be a writer, take him, he's good. If you just want a good grade for a prereq, avoid him like the plague.

Assignments were way too hard for the level of class, was not helpful when you needed it. He was also very boring, and he gave me a hard time when i tried to drop the class. i took the class with a different instructor the next quarter...

Allen Braden creative writing classes helped moviate me to write where I struggled to before. I only wish that I could afford take them again.
Waaayyy too syllabus based. There were no reminders about due dates, so you had to make sure you kept it. I also felt very overwhelmed by the class writing assignments. I eventually withdrew.
He is one of the smartest guys I have ever met. He knows his stuff. He sets high standards. A good guy who obviously loves poetry. He's a regarded poet nationally and will only get better. Take his class!

If you are going into the healthcare field, this class is for that. His essays can be difficult but he will also help if he knows you are trying. He likes students to be there everyday and do what is required (i.e. reading, homework). If you want to improve on writing, take him. Seems tough at first but then lightens up later.
He will destroy you like an academic ninja.
Instead of writing helpful comments on my Failed essay he said "follow the guidlines next time please". when I (nicely) told him i thought it was unfair for him to assume that he had no reply. Did try and explain some things when i asked but still wasn't understandable. Great class if you understand lit well & get hidden meanings from what is read.
this clas is scattered. I wouldn't take it if you need an a. He takes pride in being hard and doesn't show up every day. A lot of people get d's in this 100 level class. It was not worth my time or effort. I am very dissatisfied.
This man has a passion for the English language, especially poetry and if you want to learn you will. He has high expectations but you will be rewarded if you’re going on in college. He prepares you for university. I am so grateful for him. He has given me a foundation I will always be able to use. Take him if you’re serious about achieving. He doe
I don't think he cares whether or not his students learn anything. He only cares about himself.
Yawn... I've learned more being asleep in his class than awake and he's not at all helpful when you require/ask for it ~ he seems like someone who seems to be in it for some sort of self fullfilling need not to teach and pass on knowledge. Request a different instructor.
I want my money back! Big waste of time. He's missed 6 classes and the term is not over. His instructions are vage and he does not tell you what he requires for certain things until after the fact.EX:only after 1st rough draft was due did he say it had to be 90% of essay. We have not done any exercises to use what we have read/learned.He's very bad!

I learned more from reading the text books on my own then from him. He doesnt give out A's. He even said that on the 1st day, but i thought it was a joke so i didnt switch out but ended up withdrawing later. Dont waste you're time or money on him. You'll regret it.Plus he misses alot of class which wastes our time cuz he doesnt let u know b4 hand.
Cares more for students than other professors. He gave an A-, so he does give A's. He is a knight at the round table for students. He helped my friend a terminally ill student poet at TCC when another professor would not take the time to understand her struggles. She needed encouragement and received it. He is a compassionate instructor.
Hard to understand, and gives way too many assignments!!!
This man has a serious self-importance problem. He started out the first day by telling us how much money he's won in poetry contests. Does he think this makes him a good teacher? The class was disorganized and unstructured. I'm very disappointed.
This professor is unreasonable. I took his English 101 course as a freshman and Running Start student. The term paper for the class was to rewrite all papers and submit the originals (with his comments). Well, living in Tacoma, my car was broken into, and my backpack was taken. He marked me down a letter for not having the originals!

Braden is incompetent and unprofessional. Also: he skips class and plays favorites. If you have the choice between Braden and waiting till next term for the class you want, i HIGHLY recommend waiting till next term.

Worst class I've ever taken. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!! HE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER. There is no such thing as an A grade, literally. He assigns readings to teach us instead of actually teaching anything. He gives way too many essays! !!!!AVOID!!!! I'm an A student and I will probably receive a C in his class.
My classmate received a C- on her first paper of the term. Braden told her it was because her paper was "too advanced" and incorporated techniques which had not yet been covered in class. If she had turned it in later in the term, she would have received an A. This is very typical behavior for Braden.
I thought he was a very decent teacher. if you got a bad grade its because you are lazy. Just do the work and follow his guidlines and you will get a good grade. simple.
I love English. It has always been my favorite subject. However, I dreaded going to Mr.Bradens class and always left in a terrible mood. Any question I asked was always answered with a half hearted, monotoned response of "why don't you consult the book."
While Mr. Braden maybe a very skilled poet, he is the worst english teacher I have ever had. When asked a question, he does not answer, but instead offers the condescending advice of ?perhaps the answer is located in the book.? The book is more of a teacher than he was all quarter.
The worst, most unhelpful teacher ever!
I am intelligent and otherwise well-educated. Prior to taking Braden's class I thought I was a good writer. I've had other professors with PHD's praise my writing, but Braden makes me feel like an idiot. I feel useless and empty now. I am not young and green, I wish I had not taken his class.
If I hear that I should have learned something in English 101 again I am going to scream. Some of us took english 101 12 years ago and do not remember.
His class requires you to attend daily, put major effort in to your work, and except harsh and straight forward criticism. He will not sugar coat anything and will let you know if you?re not ready to be there. However, I ended up appreciating his ruff teaching style and learned a lot. I received an A so yes, he does actually give them out.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!!! he is unprofessional, rude, and cares only about himself.... not for his students - he doesn't explain anything clearly, from the lecture to assignments, and he will not hesitate to belittle you in front of the class
He is the hardest English teacher I have ever had. The one thing I was able to understand clearly and glean from his class was from his section on run-on sentences and fragments.
You pay a lot of money and Braden makes sure you get your moneys worth through use of the text. He will NOT hand out answers. Instead he chooses to give students the change to find answers on their own. What you learn in his class will more than prepare you for future English needs. If you want everything handed to you, this isn't your class.
2nd paper was due April 28th-got it back the final day of class as I turned in the final paper.There4, we couldn't improve upon our writing.I got A-'s on the previous papers.Being recently published means NOT having2teach or grade4that manner.Final grade: B, I got it w/out seeing my errors or having the chance2improve.Teaching isnt on his 2do list.
Want a good grade in Mr. Braden's class? Simple: Show up, show interest, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, be respectful, and ask for help during office hours. Mr. Braden will not answer silly questions or put up with someone being lazy, and can you blame him? If you try hard and do all the readings you will get a good grade. He is fair.
Very rude! I was always nervous to ask him a question because he would be so rude about it. Very hard grader. Only take him if you think youre skilled at writing. He made me feel bad about my writing though I have always done well in English. Wouldn't recommend him to someone who is just trying to get a good pre-req grade.
English was my best subject until I met Braden. He is sarcastic, rude, and unmerciful. He had two weeks to grade one paper, yet chose to do it on the last day of class, during our 45 min final. Braden puts no effort into grading or teaching. He is definitely the worst teacher I've ever had. I may complain to the dean about his slacker status.
Grades much too hard for a 101 level class. He skipped class at least four times. Do not take him if you need an A.
If your goal is to become a better writer, take his class. He will absolutely help you get there. If your goal is just to get an easy A on your transcript or fill a prereq, don't bother - you will certainly have to work hard to pass his class.
Mr. Braden is an awesome instructor, patient and helpful with all questions. If you are not sure of any assignment you can feel free to ask.He is extremely knowledgable. This was such a great class,I learned so much!He provided a solid foundation to further my education. He does have high standards, but we should also as college students! Thanks Mr.B!!
What an inspiring instructor!Very fair, do your work and you'll be great.
Very fair, do your work and you'll be great.
At college we are taught to expect diversity, why would that limit itself to only students? Every instructor has their own style and Mr. Braden's is very informative, while challenging in a positive way.
I'm a A - B student, and the quarter I took him made me want to quit college in. AVOID
I found Mr. Braden to be EXTREMELY rude and condescending. He skipped class at least five times during the quarter and vaguely explained assignments but was very harsh with grading. I learned literally nothing from this class, and coming from a history of taking AP english classes in high school, getting a D- was a surprise.
This was his poetry class. I think he is a much better poetry/fiction teacher than English 101 teacher. Do all the work, attend all the classes and you will do fine. It is true he is not always nice but he will be if you are a good student and ask questions after class.
Was never clear on what he expected and when I would ask him to clarify it for me he would say to refer to my book and when I asked what section in the book he would say in the book. Not helpful at all!!I wound up withdrawing from the class and actually considered dropping out....DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Very rude and disrespectful. Skipped class 3x so far. Very unclear on his desires, Essay topics are purposely confusing. AVOID
Braden is the worst English teacher i ahve ever had. I've always got B's and A's in English and am currently at a D-. He grades harshly, refuses to talk to you about your work, highly confusing about what is expecteed and skips class frequently. Do NOT take his class if you want to remain sane!
He is never clear on what you want and even if you manage to get help from tutors it won't help,he grades to harshly.
He's not clear on what he wants. The things he teaches us never seem to make much sense. He also grades too harshly. I'm usually an A and B student in English, but this year I'm a c student. We had to cram towards the end of the quarter causing us to have to work on two essays in one week.
No good. Forced to class to cram at the end of the quarter. He also doesn't give good guidelines and give little commentary on how to improve. Has lost a paper more than once already. I recommend you drop him.
Very rude and not very helpful. He skipped class a minimum of one day a week and never gave notice before. Assignments were very vague and grading criteria was never discussed. I retook the class with another professor and got an A or B on every paper with very similar prompts and the same amount of effort given. He is impossible. Beware!
I liked Mr.Braden, smart, honest guy with a sense of humor. Got me interested in stuff I wouldn't normally read or care about.
Inspiring teacher, who will evolve your opinion of literature to an extent that many cannot comprehend. If you enjoy english courses, I highly recommend him. If you're looking for an easy course, search else where.
If your are not an English buff, take another course. However, he is a very good teacher and no matter your English education, you can learn a lot from him.
Workshop class would have been fun but Braden is extremely disorganized (we didn't get even get the syllabus until week 2) and missed classes a lot (if we did that, he'd grade us down.) Assignments were announced right before they were due. I wish he had put more effort into teaching us and explaining expectations.
DO NOT Take Him!!!!! He missed 5 or more days. and when I was sick and stayed home i got blasted on my grade. I asked if there was anything I could do to even get a C? He replied take English 101 in Summer. AVOID at All cost.
Some of the assignments were not very clear, but he likes to give you open ended assignments and let you run with it. If your a creative person who likes freedom to work and grow then he's a great teacher for it. His exercises help teach fundamentals and the workshops do wonders at growing you as a writer. Highly suggest this professor.
Mr. Braden is not clear on his assignments and unfair in his grading system. It's virtually impossible to get an A in his class or on any assignment regardless of time spent writing. He misses class often so check your email everyday. I would not recommend this teacher. Wish I had known about this site sooner :)
What can I say that hasn't already been said. He misses class consistently, grades incredibly harsh. I did very well in English prior, but my first paper was a D-. I AM NOT LAZY EITHER. Then when I went to him after class about it, he said to do better the next paper. I wanted to cry. I wouldn't recommend this professor. He's impossible.
I WRITE A PAPERS DID FOR EVERY ENGLISH CLASS I EVER TOOK, BUT I SCORED D'S IN HIS CLASS. HE'S NEVER CLEAR, AND HIS HANDWRITING IS ATROCIOUS AND HARD TO SEE WHEN HE WRITES ON THE BOARD
This professor is horrible. He assigns you papers and then expects you to turn them in with flying colors after not going over the assignment but once in class. He grades super hard, I have never received a bad grade on a paper and my first paper was barley passing!!! I wish I would have looked at this before taking him.
He is a very fair grader on essays. The key to getting a good grade in his class is to consistently write high-quality essays, I did not receive below a B on any of my essays. If you do not have strong writing skills, do not take his class. And make sure to keep up with the reading!
Honestly the worst teacher ever. He missed so much class, was never on time, unorganized, and gave me a grade of a C on a five page paper that I spent a week on. I love English but now,I fear it for I got no help what so ever.
Mr. Braden really is a nice dude, he doesn't want you to fail his class. H really like to challenge you when it comes to English. But there are some things unfair about his class like the pop quizzes that you can only pass if you be a try hard. Don't take his class unless your essays are gold and you're ready for anything that happens.
I liked Professor Braden, he was nice and when he did teach, he was clear and made subjects easy to understand. The issue I had with his class is that he seemed very unmotivated to be there. Tough grader and doesn't always give the instruction needed for an assignment. Tests were reasonable, challenging enough but possible to get a perfect score.
Hard paper grader
I liked this class even though I don't really care for english. Braden was nice and made class fun and interesting
I'm a Straight-A Running Start student, and I did very well in this class. Professor Braden made lectures fun and the essay topics weren't hard. He's really in to poetry and thought-provoking literature so that's pretty much what you write on. Not sure why his review score is so low.
I have always done very well in english classes, but this class was not the same. Braden did not make any of the assignments clear enough to understand what he was asking for. Although I did not get a poor grade in his class I found it very difficult to start or complete assignments, such as papers, without direct one-on-one questioning.
I loved taking English 103 with Mister Braden this semester! His class was very easy & I thought that he was very funny & had a good sense of humor which helped, too. Then again, English is my thing & I am an English major so it was probably easier for me than most. I think you'll most definitely enjoy Allen himself, but perhaps not the class.
He grades on attendance, so make sure you are there. Other than that, pretty easy course. I received A's on all my papers (which I wrote the night before).
One of the hardest courses I've ever taken. Braden has no problem giving zeros on any or all of your quality essays if even theres the slightest problem with formatting. Have to take a sick day? Forget about it. You will fail the class.
I would't recomend this class. Not hard just boring.
Allen Braden is the teacher many of you may dislike. To me, there are those who are taking his classes for the credit itself and are not necessarily open to the ideas of traveling through language, and writing about it. For writers, and for those curious about the mysteries of the writer and the English language, buckle your seat belt.
Will grade you down on any little thing he sees wrong, but will not tell you what was wrong or why he graded you down. Expectations were not clear to begin with.
Professor Braden is a great teacher I took him for creative writing and absolutely loved it however I did not like the group share makes you feel like your writing is not good. The other students always had something negative to say. This class is definitely not for the shy writters
He doesnt explain why he gives you the low scores he does. His tests are unreasonable especially the final, he expects you to remember 10-12 long stories and readings that we read from the beginning of the course, and analyze in long detail all of them in a 40 minute time limit. Also, he doesnt give you directions on where to find those readings
Tough grader and unclear as to what he wants and expects on assignments. A lot of reading. It seems like art and poetry can be interpreted in different ways by different people, but he wants your thinking to match his otherwise you wont get an A
He literally gave me a zero on an essay because I wouldn't redo it to his liking. I initially submitted the paper and he asked me days after the due date to redo the paper as if I had time to as a full time student and a full time worker. When asked I asked him to provide actual justification or a REAL rubric, he refused. Do not take his class.
Great professor, highly recommended.
I emailed Mr. Braden about some questions I had on an essay that was due. I emailed him on a Saturday and the assignment was due on the following Sunday at midnight. I did not receive a response from him until Monday.
Workshop class. Must like groups and sharing your writing. He won't baby your sensitive writer soul but he's not an evil critic, either. Genuinely interested in seeing students improve. Show up, write, participate. I got more than a grade from this class; I got challenged to produce solid work other people will understand and enjoy.
Refuses to help or answer questions properly. I requested more help than any student he has ever had when I only had a question about one of his unclear essay and his online works. It's an easy class by far, but his grading methods/criteria are unknown, unclear, and hard to determine how to do it his way, and any feedback received is not helpful.
Dr. Braden is quite an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about the material & is very knowledgeable. His class is definitely not easy, however, you will learn a lot about American literature. He assigns readings nearly everyday and there's a big group project towards the end of the quarter (so don't procrastinate).
All in all, he is a okay teacher. The only problem is that he nit picks at every little thing that could be wrong in our fiction writing, which makes no sense because fiction can be whatever you want it to be and it can be written however you want it to be. Beware if you cannot watch certain movies because he showed a movie, Red, and it was rated R
There is not enough money in the world to make me take him again. A horrible teacher was not clear on his assignments at all and extremely tough grader and borderline mean to students he doesn't like. I will call you out on stupid things like going to the bathroom for to long. Don't come to class you will not pass.
Professor Braden expects his students to do the work and try. If you are looking for an easy A then he is probably not the teacher for you. If however you would like to learn and understand the subjects he teaches he is a fantastic teacher. It is clear that he cares about what he teaches and takes pride in his students understanding the subject.
Alright, so it has been years, but with recent events, I feel it's worth digging up. If you Google "Who invented the novel," the undisputed answer is a Japanese lady-in-waiting, Murasaki Shikibu. Her work's estimated publication date is before 1021. This professor will insist the novel was invented by a white European man. I'm still salty.
He is definitely a tough-grader. You really have to try in this class to get a somewhat decent grade. He is not flexible with due-dates at all... if you are not good with time management I highly recommend not taking his class. He is a not bad communicator and keeps up with grading/uploading assignments.
It's just not worth taking this class. Since this was an online class, we didn't communicate much with Prof. Braden, and I did enjoy the assignments and workshops with other students. But he's very unclear, provides no grading criteria, doesn't interact with students much, and does not give good feedback at all. Wouldn't recommend.
Took Prof. Braden for Humanities 101 online. Class was very organized and he gave about 2 hours of work for each day Mon-Fri. Prof. Braden is very easy to contact through email and offers 1 on 1 zoom calls as well. He cares a lot about the class and wants his students to succeed. Show effort and you will succeed. I enjoyed taking his class a lot!
I love Professor Braden, I have taken two of his classes; Fictional Writing and Poetry. If you are bad at writing or do not enjoy it, don't take this class. If you are good at writing, taking this class, you will do really well in it. If you want to become a better writer, take this class. He is quite helpful with constructive criticism.
I loved this class, and I really enjoyed Professor Braden! He is a tough grader and will tell you ways in which to improve your writing, but why wouldnt you want him to do that? I saw people complaining about this on here, why take a writing class if you dont want to improve? Anyways, he is very knowledgeable and someone to look up to!
He is very easy to get frustrated at because of his lack of feedback on assignments. Would not recommend him, especially if you are only taking him for a credit. His tests are very unrealistic because of the 40-minute time limit. I find that many of my peers usually did not finish their tests on time, which resulted in blank answers.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Worst class ive ever take + teacher. Grading is terrible as well as his feedback for you. His directions make no sense. If you would rather spend your friday taking an exam that should only take 45 minutes but in reality, 3+ hours then this class is for you only
Proff. Braden doesn't give clear instructions for weakly assignments. He does give good feedback on essays but also grades harshly. main thing that sucks is that he offers no extra credit. He did offer one assignment for an extra 10 points but other than that no E.C. Most of the Engl. teachers at TCC are the same. be sure to read the syllabus.
Honestly do yourself a big favor skip past all the other ratings and read this one this professor is the worst not only does not have any lecture but hes lazy hes the head of department but doesnt know to reach out to students if you take his class than i bid you good luck you heard it here first hes the worst English teacher i have ever met
I dont understand why hes a professor if he cant even give lectures to students. Why even bother teach if you want your students to learn from the internet. Please he doesnt know how to give proper directions and yes maybe he replys to your emails but he doesnt get any clearer. I wish I can tell my past self not to take this class.
Worst human being I have ever encountered. If you value your own life and sanity do not have any type of encounter with this man.
Professor Braden can be harsh at times. I failed one my first ever assignments here because he wasnt clear on the due date The rest of the quarter was made up of me trying to recover from it. I gave them a 4 because the final for this class was very stress free. They were very understanding about late assignments and questions though.
Got really sick, in the first month, but he wouldn't even email me back when I asked for some kind of support or extension. Doesn't provide study guides, doesn't ask relevant questions, many of the discussion prompts are unnecessarily offensive, as well as the readings, and even other teachers clearly don't like him. As others have said, he's lazy
I love English and this class was hard, I would honestly pick another teacher, if you get him Goodluck but his class is hard to pass
He's definitely a good professor, his lectures are well planned out, assignments are clear, and office hours are helpful. I would recommend taking this class, however, he can come off as a little snarky. There were only 3 big essays, and he had very clear expectations and support for all of them.
I really liked this class, I took a class with Prof. Braden last fall, so I knew what I was getting into. There can be a bit of a learning curve, as his courses do require effort, but I still think that he's a really good teacher. He has very clear expectations and makes sure to announce any changes beforehand. He also has good office hours.
He is rated tough because he requires you to earn your grade. Do the work, show up, and make an effort. He is passionate about literature and teaches you to be the same. If you want to learn and grow this is a good class, if you want an easy grade by just sitting there, don't take this professor.
He is awful Im taking his class right now and he is so petty about the small things that even if u reason with him he still wont grant a full point. Honestly those WHO are rating 4.0 is probably him rating himself. He is so critical for no reason other than to be on his high horse that I will be praying he gets fired and we need to say something
The worst professor that I have had at TCC, he just has this attitude around him that creates a terrible learning experience, and extremely rude in emails.
Professor Braden has a clear teaching style, though can come across as a bit harsh at times. The workload is challenging, but engaging with the resources like unstuck study can really help with study prep. Overall, a worthwhile course for those who enjoy writing.
if you have a life outside of English class, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! he does not let you make things up, even if you are sick. if you have to leave class early, even if you tell him, he will give you a zero for any work done in class and not let you make it up. he will mark you down just because he does not like how you worded something.
He will mark points off because you didn't word something the way he liked. A lot of the articles we read and the questions he asked were so wordy and confusing. He will freely take off points for no reason, but will not give feedback on the assignment & you'll have to reach out to him for it, only for him to tell you he doesn't like your writing.
This professor is brutal with grading. BE ON TIME. I cried a lot but his feedback was okay and I feel like overall this course did improve my writing, so since it did I would take this professor's course again as there is evident sign of progress. Took this class for fun but if it's for a grade, I wouldn't RECOMMEND it. RISKY.
He writes feedback in cursive. I can't read cursive.
The worst class I have taken in *years*. Not due to difficulty. The professor did the bare minimum to teach the class (playing YouTube videos and having us watch movies and only giving lectures in the form of sloppy word documents). Only take this class if you want to pay hundreds for a writing group. Prof also grades spec-fiction harshly--beware.
Very rude and belittling professor. If you word something a way he doesn't like he will grade you awful. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!
One of the worst professors I have ever encountered. He is awful with feedback, but will grade very harshly. He is very subjective with how he grades. There is not enough time to finish tests. He is awful with accessibility for his students. He is hard to communicate with.
you need a pretty creative mindset to do his assignments. he does take points off sometimes without explaining but if you word your answer close enough to the articles he'll mark it right. he will have surprise assignments that are not posted online, so try not to skip. assignments are also worth very little points so your grade can go down quick
He was an ok professor, but I definitely have had way better. He had lots of reading, writing, and most things were hand written, my hand was tired. He took a while to grade my work and gave harsh feedback and some seemed unfair. A lot of my classmates had complaints about him and his grading. Be prepared for boring lectures he repeats himself.
