when I had him for philosophy, he was hot, but in a dorky way. He was funny too!
alright teacher, but certainly NOT hot like the other person said.
Was a great teacher and has a passion for it. Was first class I took and he set a high standard for other teachers to follow.
I thought that he was very unorganized.I believe that he taught his own beliefs too much considering how influenced kids taking philosophy are known to be.He didnt make you think which is what philosophy is supposed to be, he wants reassuance of his views
The other dude must have a chip on his shoulder ... this class rocks! I'm a guy, so I can't say if he's hot, but I guess so ... my girlfriend kinda thought so. The only people I hear dissing him are the ones who got bad grades or weren't too bright!
Cool Guy with interesting class topics. He doesnt deal with the usual philosopy b.s.
cool guy, interesting topics. a nut about the animal rights thing... gruesome videos about animal torture. definatley reccomended.
This was the first course I took at COD and has been my favorite. I thought that Allen was a great teacher and really makes you think about stuff from different perspectives. Don't take this class if you think it will be an easy A though.
Hated this class! There are definitely better Philosophy teachers to take! Did fine in the class, but found the teacher to be of no help. Shows a lot of videos and some are disturbing!
Allen is amazing! His class is great! I'm taking Philo 100 right now, and if I ever have a question, he does his very best to answer it. He's unlike other teachers; hates brainwashing people. He wants people to think for themselves. And if I had to choose between hot or not, I would say hot.
He is not very clear with his assingments and journals and the requirements, however he is very easy-going and easy to reach.
There seem to be lots of split opinions on this guy, but I thought he was great. Interesting topics for discussion, very reasonable assignments and tests. Good sense of humor... I have no complaints. A
This class is an easy A. But, this class is more like his personal soap box were he can push his point of views onto young adults. He is a animal rights activist and an Atheist who loves to prove that people with different views are wrong. If you can put up with that then go for it.
I took this class to fufill a req, and ended up loving it. The subject matter was controversial and at times frightening (cue animal rights videos), but eye-opening. I felt more enlightened, mature, and worldly after taking his class. He was very helpful and treaded people well. Also was very funny.
whoever said he is hot is wrong. He is funny tho. anyways, this a good class and easy it really gets u thinking. He does not push his views onto anyone, he wants u to think about the diff. views on diff. things, not just wat u knew growing up. He actually wants to know wat u think. participation is a huge part of ur overall grade in this class.
This guy is a joke. I think he is lost in his own world. Honestly, a very unclear, and never to the pint guy. His class is easy, but assignments are shady, he'll give you bad grades and not explain to you what you're doing wrong. Bad teacher, I dont recomend at all!
He's a great teacher with a good way of presenting material.
He is very easy going and very good at getting his material across, and he is funny.
This is by far the worst teacher I have had to date.He does not grade assignments and gives you absolutely no feedback on assignments. The class is not intellectually challenging and it feels like you are listening to a 3 year old try to teach Philosophy. He sucks.
His grading scale consists of only an A or F and his assignments are not clear. The class is about his belief that God doesn't exist so therefore we should all become animal rights activists and worship them instead. The class is very boring and if he believes you are not paying full attention to his lecture he deducts points from your grade.
He was cool, very lenient. Walk in with an open mind, he's really not trying to force opinions on anyone. I think it's important to know about the animal rights and atheist arguments, despite your opinions on them, (and I'm pretty religious.) The books and hw he assigns are actually worth the time to look over them- I like Bait and Switch.
he's a cool teacher, but hard grader.. i did well in the class but the homework killed me even though i turned in every assignment.. he's not bad as a teacher, one thing is that you never know what your grade is in the class because all the homework is to be submitted online.. i wouldn't take him again just because i am not satisfied with my grade
I don't feel that Costell pushes his views on his students- he doesn't often, or perhaps ever, reveal his personal beliefs. This class is challenging, but in a GOOD way. Not your run-of-the-mill philosophy class! He's very funny and presents material in an interesting and non-traditional way. Highly recommended. (And, he's pretty damn cute...)
I enjoyed the challenge of fighting for my beliefs constantly, but I was very unhappy when he made us spit out his beliefs in the tests. He would have been very happy to make atheist vegans out of us all. The book you read is a joke, even against the standards he sets. But he is funny, nice, and let me have my say in class. It made me think.
He was GREAT, makes you think and do research on the topic. This way you can make your own choices about good and wrong, reality and lies. This class was definitely good start for thinking and exploring life. After his class, philosophy is not so boring after all!
really nice guy. the class can get confusing and frustrating at times. its really hard to stump this guy but it makes you really think deep.
Really preechy type. He is a good teacher, but he does make you feel like he is trying to push his agenda, hard-core. I remember going veagan for a couple of months after this class, thirty pounds less later, I decided to turn back. Serously, he does have a shady system of HW (all online, really vauge). If you can put up with preechy teachers, hes ok
He doesn't give out grades at any time during the semester and then he will definitely surprise you at the end of the semester...and most of the time, it isn't good news.
Pretty Easy going, very understanding when you have a conflict just as long as you let him know whats going on.
He is a good teacher. He is interesting, funny, and understanding. This class makes you think. I got a B without really trying.
He is a very funny, and laid back teacher. He really makes you think in this class, and hes damn good at doing it. Even if you really didn't like philosophy before, you should take a class with him, because he is great. He is understanding about things as long as you talk to him about it, and he isn't an ass like most teachers.
he is a good teacher. I am in his class now and I need to know how to get out of the final? If anyone was offered this please e-mail me what i need to do at [email protected]. Thanks :)
this professor is extremely interesting, and has a lot of opinions. if you don't like your own beliefs being vigorously tested and maybe even proven wrong, then don't take this course. i have a lot to actually think about after taking philosophy 100, and he did a great job in keeping our attention. understanding, all through email&online, and great
This teacher was great!!! People always complain that he was very one sided and tried to change people. I would like to make a comment on that. ITS A PHILOSOPHY CLASS!!! Think out side the box and look how things might be different (don't have to change anything to just think about something). Sure it might seem extremely one sided but the issues h
Costell is a cool guy. He definitely knows his stuff. If you like to talk and debate get in this class. His way of teaching is a little odd. He lets the class pick what they want to talk about. The class is easy but he doesn't give you a grade till the end of the semester so its a surprise. oh yea theres no hw,and quiz's are never counted
Awsome teacher...knows his stuff, and he may come off like hes preachy but really it's just showing an alternate way of thinking using very controversal subjects. Really Funny, and I enjoyed the class fully. Take him.
WONDERFUL professor; the class was extremely easy, but yet enlightening. Mainly we have discussions which are ABSOLUTELY interesting...you're bound to get involved in it! I have to admit that he grasped my interest greatly. OMG his class is soooo entertaining; it's impossible to ever fall asleep or get bored. Excellent guy; very educated! TAKE HIM!
He seems pretty understanding guy and his class is always quite interesting but i honestly get a vibe that even though he claims hes not trying to promote or discourage religion, i feel like he is always hinting that religion is useless and that we should all reject religion because he doesn't believe in faith. That everything in life needs clear
Costell is one of the best professors I've had. His class is unconventional and controversial, but that's the point- to make you think and ask questions! He doesn't show you your grade until the end,but as long as you do all the assignments and actually THINK when you're doing them, you'll be fine. He talks a LOT about religion and animal rights bu
He truly has got to be the best teacher I have ever had. I actually participate in his class because the topics and discussions are so interesting. I like that theres like no HW but thats not even a part of why that class is so good. I dont think I've ever dreaded going to that class once honestly. Hes a funny guy and I would totally recommend him!
He was one of the best teachers i had at COD! He really got me thinking! And at first you may think he's trying to change your mind about religion and etc he's just giving out the facts, from both sides! Overall i loved his class and will probably take another one of his next semester!
I loved his class. 2 reading assignments, 1 project, no final, no notes, no tests. He gets you interested in what is being discused
Easy, interested class! Awesome teacher who is really passionate about philosophy. All you do in class is talk and have discussions everyday and it?s never boring! No HW, no notes. 2 reading assignments but u pick the books, and one fun project. funny, smart, young, caring professor. One of the best teachers at COD. Take him.
BEST teacher I have ever had...by far. He made the class so much fun!!
interesting class. somewhat unorganized teacher. attendance is major part of grade. 2 book analyses and 1 project due throughout semester. easy class but needed more structure, he didnt really ever have a teaching plan and it seemed like that was because he was too busy to make one.
hes a really nice guy, and a great teacher, this was my favorite class
I think Costell was a great teacher I had him inFaLL09 &I really enjoyed the class&if you do everything right you will get a good grade. Costell is very fair&I think ppl who ddnt do well in his class are very lazy. And just to comment on something someone else wrote about Costell pushing his beliefs on ppl, well he is not the one thats lookin u up:)
Take this class with an open mind. He is a fun teacher who speaks his mind and allows students to explore new ideas and reasoning that is in many ways unconventional. Fun class. There are 3 big projects, but hey...what class doesn't have some type of homework! Learned a lot. If you are not open to new ideas...do not take this class.
Mostly unstructured class discussions. Interesting, relevant topics. However, he says we shouldn't care about our grades. No grade updates. 3 big projects. If you just want to learn and enjoy class, go for it. The lack of grade updates just stressed me out.
I LOVE COSTELL! Easily the coolest teacher ever. Like a boss.
Mr.Costell is a wondeful teacher. Ethics was one of the best classes I have ever taken. Everyday we had a discussion about ethical issues like whether eating meat was ethical or whether corporal punishment is ethical. Mr.Costell is very open minded. Class is fun and there is little homework. I would definitely recommend Mr.Costell.
Having never taken philo. before, I'd say Mr. Costell set the bar pretty high as far as teachers go. There are only 3 major assignments and you will probably actually like coming to class. I didn't like that there were no grade updates though. You should improve on that Mr. C.
Costell is extremely knowledgeable about each topic he presents to the class! Only a couple major assignments, so it's an easy A. Explains everything clearly and actually makes learning the material fun! Constant class debates and speaking out in front of class.
He's a great professor. He knows how to get students to think critically. He will never put you on the spot. He understands people can be unsure/nervous at times, he'll let you be the observer if you naturally are one. The most you can do is at least raise your hand and say a word or two when he asks the class a question (like a survey). Great guy.
Great professor, delivers relevant topics and doesn't present any bias. No textbook, instead a student can pick 2 books they're interested in, and then one final project at the end which isn't difficult at all. Highly recommend taking!
one of the best teachers i have had at cod. welcomes his class to a student centered teaching style. TAKE THIS CLASS!
One of the best teachers I have ever had, makes the class really fun and teaches well. Teaches you to be a free thinker and addresses other issues to the class. Topics discussed are extra terestrials, DMT, fallacys in thinking, and important rights in todays society, plus a lot of other topics.
He'll challenge your point of views but the point is to be a free thinker. Do research and state your case.. Discussions are fun and are relevant topics, Costell is awesome IMO.. Slightly biased on certain opinions but aren't we all in some way or another?
great teacher, wasnt too clear on the book quiz we did this semester, thus everyone failed. but a very cool teacher, also heard i dont know if its true but the midterm and final he throws out the window and evaluates you on how you understand and participate, idk if its true just a rumor!!!!!! love the class never thought to even ditch!!
He is an amazing teacher. Not only did I learn more in his class than any other class he made it fun and enjoyable to go to class. i looked forward to his class. The things you learn in his class you will use for the rest of your life. Not only did I enjoy his class but I am going to take another class with him just because he is a great teacher.
His project and book report he assigns at the exact time will make you cry from stress if you are a full time student. He will dock your points if you dont attend, are late, or dont talk, if you text in class expect to fail even if you think he wont figure it out. It is true that he does not have tests but the class is going to be a challenge.
Awesome teacher!! He does not give out too much work, but you HAVE to do it all to pass. He is a pretty easy on grading. I learned so much in his class, it was never boring! He does assign two projects around the same time, but they are not hard. Take this class, you will love it!
Mr. Costell is a phenomenal teacher. I enjoy every minute of his class. I love that he is comfortable with swearing and talking about taboo topics. He will try to throw you lots of curveballs with the syllabus and midterm.. which I found hilarious. Always question the truth! Don't be afraid to call him out either, he wants you to question authority
He can be funny and all but he says some pretty disturbing things and curses a ton. and you cannot miss class, you will loose points. and you have to particpiate in order to pass.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is extremely unprofessional. He swears like crazy and uses vulgar example to get his point across. Homework consists of questions over the lecture. Class is very laid back and talking rather than lecture. You read two books and 1 project. Half the class fails the midterm. You will not know your grade till the end of the semester
Is feedback is personal and without merit.
I took Mr. Costell's class 3 years ago and am still thinking about how amazing he was! He totally gets it, like in a way I've never seen with any other teacher. The class project ended up having a real significant life impact on my life. BELIEVE ME: You won't find another experience like this; you must take this class! Mr. C IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!
Easy class as long as you pay attention. Allen explains topics pretty well and does his best to help his students. He is one of the best professors i've had so far. He also isn't afraid to speak his mind witch is pretty amusing. His classes are never silent.
Costell is awesome. Really clear in his lectures, makes sure every student in the class is on board before he moves on. Respectful of everyone's opinion but will challenge you if you can't support it with logic. Explains ethical concepts in a humorous and easy to understand way. Conversational style, raising your hand isn't necessary. Take this!
Professor Costell is awesome. He's exactly what a college professor should be. He encourages you to think outside of the box and really analyze the material. Instead of teaching you what the facts are, he teaches you how you should think about religion. He's also hilarious. Definitely recommend.
World Religions was an amazing class & highly recommended! Costell is an amazing professor! Easy homework preps & book quiz, but the midterm and final were tricky (so take notes). Lastly, he not only takes attendance twice, but he grades on attendance.
My favourite professor of the semester. Honestly wanted to make sure everyone learned and thought outside of the box.
I really liked his class, but it was pretty difficult. This is by no means an easy professor. Tests and quizzes are tough. Prof. Costell is a really cool dude though and knows his stuff. Glad I had him even though I didn't do particularly well in his class.
Honestly the only teacher that I have genuinely been interested in. I only got a C in the class but he is an amazing teacher. He challenges new ideas and ways to think outside of the box. I would say the only issue I ever really had was with some of the tests and how the questions were worded but other than that he is an amazing professor.
Was a cool guy and all but I definitely don't recommend. Made us read 3 books in a total of 8 weeks, midterm and final were impossible, and it was only out of 100 points so getting a good grade was very unlikely. Not an easy class by any means, tests are loaded with trick questions only Einstein would know. Do not take.
I've never had a teacher actually invested in teaching concepts to students before. I have also never enjoyed a class more. He is very fond of discussion between students. He assigned 3 novels to read sections of. He gave out homework almost every class but it was all very simple. His tests were more difficult than most.
I wouldnt take him. His tests and quizzes will trick you and theres also three books to read which is absurd. He is a tough grader and gives homework every day that will make your head explode. The class is out of 100 points so its hard to get a good grade since every test question is meant to trick you. He has no problem letting students fail.
I highly suggest taking someone else. He is tough
He can be funny and all but he says some pretty disturbing things and curses a ton. and you cannot miss class, you will loose points. and you have to particpiate in order to do well
Prof. Costell challenges you to think, you will always walk out of the classroom with new knowledge. Participation is a must: He encourages you to ask questions and participate in discussions. There will be readings but the books are pretty entertaining but he allows you to choose your book based on whatever interests you the most.
Professor Costell has very nice lectures and seems very knowledgeable about religions. HOWEVER, I feel that he has a bias as an Atheist. This class really made me learn more about my religion before opting out of it completely, so I will give kudos to that.
If there was a lower ranking he would get it
Costell is sincere and he doesn't sugar coat things. (And if you can't handle this then don't take his class.) Yes, Exams can be a little hard, but if you review your notes and actually study for them, you will do fine. He's also a really cool guy to talk to and his lectures are hilarious!
All you have to do to ace the tests is just stay awake during his lectures. But trust me, that won't be a problem. This man is HILARIOUS. It's obvious from the beginning that he's an atheist, but he REALLY knows about religions. He'll joke and swear but still give an informative lecture. This is a class that you'll WANT to go to every day.
Trust me when I say this is one of the best lectures I have been in. Costell speaks his mind, and is not afraid to share any details about the topic. Tests are difficult, and the book tests have questions that make it tricky to find the 'best' answer. Overall, I would take him again, but be careful since the class is around 100 points.
His tests are made to trick you. Get ready to read like never before
He is very funny. But his class is not an easy A by any means. I had to work extremely hard just to get a C. His class is only out of 100 points so there's not a lot of opportunity for points in his class. One test or quiz will sink your ship. And I must also mention that his tests and quizzes are very difficult. We also had to read three novels!
Costell is a hilarious person. He is opinionated, but it makes the course entertaining. There aren't many points in total so do the hw! Read the books at least twice, the book tests are decently difficult but if you've actually read you will be fine. Go to class as he doesn't post the lectures and they wouldn' t make sense w/o his commentary.
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. And it's unnecessary for an intro class to be this difficult. It's one of those classes where if you don't do good on one thing it'll sink your ship. His book quizzes are impossible. You better re-read them 2-3 times. All of his test questions are tricky. Yes he is funny but skip him for sure.
If you're a philosophy major DO NOT take this class. Philosophy's subjective, which makes it odd to say that a philosophy teacher is wrong. Costell isn't just always wrong, he is ARROGANTLY wrong. He talks down to you, while he draws conclusions built off idiotic non-logic. It's an easy A, but if you're hoping to learn something, steer VERY clear.
Prof Costell is super cool and funny! I really enjoyed his lectures. You need to attend lectures though because he doesn't post his powerpoints online. You need to read the books carefully to do well on the book quizzes. I feel like i learned things that I will actually use in life in this class. Wish i needed to take the other courses he teaches.
I took his Phil1100, has the same teaching style as Allen Brown from Foodnetwork. His lectures are the key to the class. I never used a textbook. Answers all your questions, very helpful. Homework is super easy. He even offers an extra credit book to read. You can't go wrong with him. Makes all his units intriguing and understandable. Easy A
Attendance is mandatory as it is near impossible to get access to content outside of class unless it is an online class. Lectures are entertaining and engaging and hysterical. Book tests and exams are difficult and tricky. Having tests in a subject like philosophy is strange and it did not feel like an intro class. It felt much more advance.
Professor Costell is very organized in his delivery. His lectures are entertaining, fun, and also easy to understand. He is a tough grader but he also offers lots of extra credit.
Costell is an awesome professor and I highly recommend having him as a professor and plan on taking other classes that he teaches because I love his teaching style and you can tell that he is very passionate about philosophy and wants to share that passion.
Always willing to answer questions and is very honest.
Definitely one of the best professors I've had since I started college, if not all of my school life. Effectively explains concepts and will take time to elaborate in a way that may be more understandable if prompted to. Treats students' beliefs with respect and presents both/multiple viewpoints on contentious topics. The class was a treat to take.
Allen Costell is truly a professor worthy of taking note of. He is genuine and actually cares about what he teaches. He doesn't mind being questioned, and welcomes it as an opportunity to further reflect upon and improve the courses he teaches. Even if you have a hard time in class, he gives you opportunities to get extra credit, even on tests!
I took this World Religions class as a summer course, and it was really fun and really changed my perspectives on religion. This isn't an easy A class, but if you make a habit of reading a few pages of the required books daily, actively engage during lectures, and take notes (basically normal class stuff), then you can pass this class no problem.
Great philosophy teacher, very engaging
If there's any class that I recommend taking it's Allen Costell's World Religions course. This is the best class I've taken, and it is because of how great the instructor is. Really puts his all into teaching, plus his presentations are interesting and fun. Course itself isn't bad. As long as you take good notes and do the readings, you'll do fine.
His PowerPoints are really incredible. It makes it much easier to follow, and much more fun to pay attention. He's also really passionate about what he teaches. I feel like I really learned something from this class.
The lectures are great and funny- but it is the classes grading scale that I had a problem with. There are only 100 points total, so getting even one question wrong on a book quiz or the final makes your chances of getting an A lower. Overall though, he is a lenient professor, but if your goal is to get an easy credit/A I would not take this class.
He was definitely the best professor/teacher I've had at COD let alone my whole k-12 education. His lectures were incredibly interesting and unique. You could definitely tell he was extremely into his teaching and making sure we were gaining something from the class. The class and material itself was also amazing, insanely interesting topics.
Costell is an amazing teacher! His grading is unique in the sense that he challenges you to think outside of yourself! Definitely would take him again and plan on it. One thing I recommend, if you do not understand speak up. He is always willing to help clarify anything that was unclear to you. Not an easy A class but worth working for!
His lectures are wonderful, and I love how he puts effort into adding GIFs and memes to his slides, and even to his Blackboard page! There were 3 short books to read, and there's a take-home quiz for each of them, but they are not difficult at all (as long as you actually read the books). Tests are take-home too, and there's no weekly homework. :)
Prof. Costell is super funny and caring. Really enjoyed having him as a teacher. The class isn't too bad as long as you show up and do the assignments. His lectures are super interesting and I honestly learn a lot from them. Overall really liked the class and the prof. would take again! :)
Prof Costell is my favorite so far, he is easy going and very entertaining. He deserves a higher rating than what he has, his class is super easy to pass and it's always a good time. You do need to read three books, but they're pretty short and easy.
Take notes, says you don't need to but everything on the PowerPoint is important. All tests are difficult but they are take home. There are three books that you need to read, please annotate. He gives extra credit but only at the end of the sem. Take these reviews w/ a grain of salt, idk why he is rated a 5. READ the syllabus, he lies.
I took Prof. Costell for intro to philo and he's a cool guy. His lectures are thoughtfully made and is very funny. I thought this class was going to talk about: meaning of life, happiness, and deep quotes; however, it more so teaches how to think critically and analyze things in life. He's a tough grader on homework, he looks at everything.
No more PowerPoints!!!!
He was a great Teacher, very passionate about what he does. It is lecture heavy class cause it's hard to talk about something when not everyone knows a lot about it. I personally had a hard time on the quizzes, take notes read the books, you will do just fine. I do wish there was like a group something tho beside questions did notreallygetotalk
Professor Costell is a good teacher, but I don't think he should be teaching World Religions. His approach to the subject came off as biased and one-sided and he didn't go into depth about the two sides of each argument he made. Expected the class to explore why people believe in religion/different aspects of faith with openmind discussions :(
Genuinely an amazing professor, he made the class fun, interesting, and was always open to hearing people's questions and answered with clarity. 10/10, am definitely taking his class again.
Costell's class was great; it was challenging in an encouraging/ positive way. I think as long as you pay attention, take notes, keep up with the weekly coursework, and don't cheat, it's a really good class that has some amazing things to think about long after the class is over.
I took world religion with Professor Costell and expected to be introduced to the world's religions. While he did do a great job of covering most of the religions, he did with a very one sided view. He stated he was atheist, and unfortunately that was very evident in his lectures. Bit biased, and a bit closed minded :(
Not at all an intellectual, and pretty unwavering in his take
Professor Costell's class was engaging, with thought-provoking lectures and insightful discussions. Though textbook-free, the course still challenged me. unstuck study's practice tools helped me ace the quizzes.
I enjoyed Professor Allen he is very mindful of his students and finds a way to make learning easy and fun. There are books you have read for Ethics but he purposely pick short and easy reads that are still engaging because he knows most students aren't reading a big book. He is hilarious and lectures are actually engaging and fun. I recommend.
I like Costell. He will challenge your beliefs, especially if you are Muslim or Christian. He also accepts a challenge towards his beliefs. Overall, as long as you are confident in your beliefs it is a blast. The classes are entertaining and thought provoking. The assignments can be difficult as you have to think like him, but overall he is fun.
The BEST educator I've had my entire life. Phenomenal PowerPoints, hilarious discussions and genuinely life-changing insight. Decent amount of work, but nothing over the top. But you've got to be willing to THINK and challenge yourself. Both philosophy & world religions have changed my life for the better. I cannot recommend him enough.
Awesome professor who genuinely cares about teaching and sharing knowledge. He'll challenge your beliefs and push you to think critically. He puts a lot of effort into his powerpoints, lectures, answering any question you throw at him. His deep analysis of different religions, especially if it's yours, will make you reflect in ways you don't expect
He doesn't care about students and isn't helpful at all. For a religion class, he mainly talks about why other religions aren't real since he's an atheist. When I tried to get help, he told the whole class to just drop the course instead of offering support.
Felt like I was taking a class on why to be an atheist. He doesn't care about his students, went for support, and he just recommended dropping the class. The grading system is mainly over the midterm and final. Good luck passing the class if you do poorly on them.
