HE SUCKS!! DON'T TAKE HIM WHATEVER YOU DO. HE WILL FAIL YOU FOR TALKING IN CLASS. WATCH OUT.
He's a great teacher, if you are open to thinking philosophically. He explains material in a way that is very clear. Great teacher, highly recommended for those looking to expand their minds.
He leaves the podium behind and uses a soapbox. Take this class if you want to be convinced that religion, smoking, beer, meat, advertising, and corperations are all bad. These are good philisophical topics if he stayed neutral, but he doesn't. Easy class, though his whining just gets old.

good guy, good teacher. he tries to bring philosophy to life and explain things in different ways that you can easily understand and has a great sense of humor
Worse teacher to take. His grades are like lottery drawings. Honestly this teacher is a hoax. Class is very boring, since he bases it on his life almost.
he is da****.you need to take him. his classes are funny and go fast. he is a very cool guy and a great teacher.
he is the****. His classes are funny. He knows what he is doing and how to keep the students awake. He has a good sense of humor and everyone loves him.
HORRIBLE. Very opinionated and boring. Most of the class hates him. Good nap time.
Very funny, interesting class.
you have to email him your hwk & he doesn't email you back to say he got it or give you any grades. his tests are pretty hard, even if you read, take notes & are there for all the classes. we did a lot of partner/group work which is pointless when the people in your class don't do the hwk. most of the class was focused on animal rights. bad.
Very good teacher!!!Very good person!!!The class was very fun and interesting.I was sad when it was over!!
Really nice guy, funny, friendly; fun class, not super hard but interesting and challenging. It's a lot more fun (for you and everybody else) if you pay attention, think, and participate. It's true that you get no feedback on grades, but there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. Definitely recommend this class.
This class really seemed more like a lecture on public policy than on philosophy. Costell is definitely an atheist, definitely a vegan, and definitely expresses extremely liberal views. He lets you talk in class, but is very loud and clear about his radical views. Be prepared to feel like a criminal if you like eating hamburgers.
He's a good guy means well all you have to do is show up for class do the h/w and project ( single) it's an easy class ; yes he talks a lot but it's a good grade basically for free...
Awesome teacher, awesome class. Homework assigments and projects are easy provided that your willing to think. He asked us to write what we'd like to get out of the class in the start and by finish I definitly feel he helped me be a better thinker which is helpful in a lot of ways
not an easy class
Very nice guy. Keeps the class fun and interesting.
He's a really cool guy, your free to say what you want in class. It's basically a class where you argue and talk about major things in the world. He grades a little hard though, not everyone can think philisophically that easy, but overall a really good guy.
Best Professor i've ever had!!! He's hilarious, and you never get bored. There is no textbook, and you basically learn through thinking yourself. Participate and REALLY think about why you think the way you do, haha.
He is a great teacher!! he keeps you interested with what he says and makes the class fun! he cracks jokes which are actually funny! highly recommend this professor! easy class, but also opens your mind. Talk out in class, makes it ALOT better. Hw is given to him in email and you have ONE project! Costell is a fun, loud, knowledgable teacher.
really good teacher.... super fun.. he challenges you to think for yourself.. no textbook and easy homwork..... really cool guy
AMAZING TEACHER! Very funny, helpful and understanding. He trys his best to make everyone comfortable and really knows how to teach, not just lecture. The only way to fail his class is by not doing the little bit of work outside class. Just make sure you read the syllabus and you will have no problems
Go to class & pay attention and you will thoroughly enjoy this class. Very laid-back, interesting, and comical. Be prepared for him to challenge your religion, values and lifestyle. However, it's very worth it. No textbooks/essays, but you will have some short assignments and a project that just requires you putting some thought into it. loved it
Professor Costell is THE TRUTH! It's that simple.
Philosophy is not my best subject at all, but I loved being in Mr.Costell's class.
just show up and try. graded mostly on effort
Costell ur my boy!! i absolutley love his teaching style and his class. its one of those classes that you actually want to go to and enjoy being. you have a voice in the class and your comments really matter and are what make up the discussion and what you learn. if i could have costell for every class i totally would!!
I had him for PHI105 and PHI115 and got an A in both classes. I would say his class is easy because he makes learning the material fun and the "work" you have to do does not even seem like work. If you are lazy and want to text all class and not pay attention I would not recommend taking him.
I THINK HE WAS A VERY VERY FUNNY TEACHER, VERY OPEN TO EVERYTHING. HE MAKES YOU THINK CRITICALLY IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. HE ALSO IS VERY CLEAR ON WHAT HE IS TRYING TO SAY. HIS WORK IS VERY EASY IN A WAY AND IS NOT A LOT. HE ALSO HAS A NICE PACKAGE FROM WHAT I COULD SEE HEHE
awesome teacher, quite possibly the best teacher ever. very cool teaching style and swears a lot which makes the class even more enjoyable and actually fun to attend. i never really knew anything about philosophy before, but now i never want to miss this class just because i love it so much!
Costell is the man. Classes are really interesting. He uses good topics and makes you think. Will definitely challenge your thinking for some issues. He just wants interesting conversations during class and to get people thinking. Class is interesting and pretty simple.
Mr. Costell is by far the 2nd easiest teacher i have had! You do need to read the book and do the responses but thats about it, and compared to how much fun his debates are its completely worth it. Down to earth, and i say take him without thinking twice. GREAT TEACHER!!!!
Very little work. The class is a lot of fun!!!!! This is the only class I enjoyed going to. He truly is a gifted and awesome teacher.
MR. COSTELL IS THE GREATEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. HE HAS HANDS DOWN CHANGED MY LIFE FOR THE BETTER. HE HAS SHOWN ME THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENT WAY TO THINK AND THAT NOT EVERYONE IS RIGHT..AWESOME TEACHER! TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best teacher i have ever had. he lets you actually think. he is very careful with how he words what he says in order to make sure everyone understands what he is trying to say, and what hes not trying to say. he has definately made me a better person. you learn about real life, things u need to know in order to be an asset to society
Great Professor, a break from the usual "sit and listen to what i say because i have a degree and you don't"! He acknowledge that every has something to offer. Easy grade if you do the work, but if your looking just for that your selling yourself short on this class,
He's alright. Liked him more at first, but then the class seemed more like he wanted to win the debate more than actually teaching you how to think critically. He definitely has strong liberal views and the class gets old after awhile with some of the arguments. Seems like he's just trying to find a way around God too. Hw is not bad; all email form
He doesn't care what anyone thinks- he doesn't judge any opinions, and he doesn't do the normal boring philosophy stuff... it's more like a critical thinking class. He's really funny and makes class fun for the most part, sometimes it's hard to find arguments for all the topics he wantedto debate, but overall the class was worth taking.
Every class is a debate. Gets redundant after a few weeks. Must participate frequently to get an A. Not much work outside of class at all. Interesting and sometimes funny, Sometimes annoying. He doesn't inform you on your grades AT ALL throughout the semester. Your final grade is a complete guess.
Does not give you grade. When asked reply is "How do you think you are doing". If you don't go his way, guess the grade- D or F. No direction or feedback of any kind.
IF you're ready for a class that will open your mind and something that can help you through out your class, this class is it. He teaches you to question authority in a mindful way, and you will learn how to look at things from all aspects. He definitely rules, taking him is worth your time.
He's an amazing teacher. You will walk out of his class understanding philosiphy of religion, and loving it. He's not the average textbook teacher. I made sure I made it to all the classes, not because it was required, but because I loved his class.r He is a very honest and hardworking/funny teacher. My most fav teacher ever!!! TAKE HIM!
I walked out of this class with an entirely new outlook on religion. There's 2 book analysis and a final project to apply everything you learned. It's tailored to what you're interested in, so I loved it. He's by far one of my favorite professors, but he never keeps track of your grade. Just participate and really do the work and you'll get an A.
Mr Costell is one of a kind teacher, which you would never see again in your school. His classes are fun and informative. He is definitely the best teacher I ever had. No other teacher would tell you things, which he does. After his class you will be different person that's for sure.
Costell is a funny guy and the class goes by quickly. Workload is very light and the class is pretty easy, just show up and you'll be good.
Costell is awesome! His class was so much fun. I looked forward to going to this class! Take him! You wont regret it. He's hillarious
He's hilarious and he really makes class interesting. This is a class worth taking if you have to. He sort of makes you redefine how you think about things. I would also bang him.
The class wasn't easy. Half of the class was online and half on campus. Costell is an awesome professor, super funny and very approachable. Very smart person also. You will not be bored. Just do not take the class online as there is about 50 problems every week you need to get done. Might not seems much for seven days, but it is when you work.
NEVER UPDATES GRADES. NEVER MADE SURE THAT BLACKBOARD WAS UPDATED AND NEVER GAVE STUDY GUIDES AND HARD TESTS.
Best teacher I've ever had at Harper. Every class was interesting and I looked forward to attending every time. He's a very funny guy, is approachable, and respects all views. Homework was not too bad. He split the midterm into two sections, end of semester final, and a final project. If you're willing to put in the work, you'll do well.
This professor is awesome, he seems like he's boring at first, but trust me he's not. This class was very interesting, not an easy A, but if you do all of the work, attend class, and actually understand the concepts you'll be fine.
I took his class a few years ago by still to this day his class has changed my life. He's a awesome teacher. As long as things have stayed the same since 2010 if you show up and participate you'll pass. Funny guy too
Intelligent, insightful and very funny are the first things that come to mind when reflecting upon Professor Costell's approach to ethics. While you will learn the classic techniques, the emphasis is on thinking for yourself and what works for you. The grading is not an easy A, but if you show up physically and mentally, you'll do well. Funny man
He curses way too much, which many of the people in the class thought was hilarious. He says that he is open to other points of views, but he doesn't seem to be, because he has a way of making you feel like an idiot in front of the class if you disagree with him. I learned a lot from his class, but the environment of it wasn't enjoyable.
I really enjoyed him a lot! He is really intelligent and hilarious. He pushes you in a good way that makes you a better thinker. His teaching style is like that of an extremely intellectual stand up comic, because he can void of hecklers. Whether or not I do pass his class, I have learned a lot from him. He is a very interesting and genuine guy!!!!
The first half of this class was good, then suddenly it seemed like we were the ones making the curriculum. He wanted to get people interested, but he did it for way too long. Sometimes a bit too vulgar, but generally funny. Really hard to get any extra credit.
Worst teacher at harper
Do not take him. Worst teacher
Dosnt give grades until finals are over. His tests are insane. Has a matching section of about 30 things instead of seperating it into sections. I found it difficult to get an A.
Very interesting. sometimes long lectures. But he makes sure to make each topic as interesting as possible. Hilarious teacher. Tests are long with a confusing format. make sure to take notes on his PPT, he does NOT upload them anywhere for you to access later. So pay attention in class, the tests are straight from notes!! 2 books needed
HORRIBLE. His test has a 30 question match part instead of sepertain it. We read a small book about 200 pages, and quizes us 10 questions. Dosnt upload power point so you have to be in class and take good notes. Dosnt upload grades until the very end. This class seemed more then three credit hours. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
Prof. Costell was no easy A. His class was only out of 100 points, so you really have to try and do well on everything. Very discussion based classes, which was a nice change for a college class. Really inspirational, you can tell he wants his students to succeed. Do the homework, study & participate. You get out of the class what you put into it!
One of the only classes I enjoyed attending this year. Costell is a fun prof. and even if his lectures are off a powerpoint, they are made bearable. People say the exams are hard but if you spend a few minutes a week just going over your notes the exams are nothing scary. Costell really makes you learn to question and think openly.
Each religion seems to be taught in selective outlooks with an attempt to appear objective. He comes prepared, but topic's direction is a little bit misguiding. Atheists, agnostics, and impressionable students may enjoy his class for his humor. I would not suggest if looking for fair/neutral content.
Incredibly passionate about the subject and his students. If you are unable to handle constructive criticism, diverse ways of thinking, or reality in general, don't take this course (or any philosophy course honestly) and then complain about it. He is very fair and accessible, just do the work (like any college course..) and you will succeed.
total class is only out of 100 points. He is a tough grader and expects you to always be in class paying attention. He will mark you down for non participation if you are sleeping, on your phone etc. I feel like everyone in the class was fighting to get a C. Impossible to pass with an A. The test are all trick questions. good guy do not take though
This class was definitely challenging but not impossible if you show up, pay attention, and take notes. Professor Costell was nice and extremely helpful, but personally he was too vulgar at times. Tests are pretty hard so make sure you know the material and ask questions. Also, his grading system is very odd. The class in total is just 100 points.
Costell is my favorite professor at Harper. Had to laugh at some of the reviews I read before I took his class; because yeah, showing up to class and participating is WAY too much to be asked for. The amount of effort he puts into everything from slides to assignment instructions is very evident. Thoroughly enjoyable class. Take his PHI205!!!
made the class harder than it needed to be.
Makes the class super entertaining while providing you with the necessary information, theres not too many test. Homework is weekly (obviously) but its not hard. Participation is necessary but its easy in this class as long as you share your opinion. Awesome professor and informative, highly recommend
I really enjoyed Costells class. He makes class interesting, and hes just genuinely a really good person and teacher. He offers a lot of extra credit so its hard to not get an A in his class. The exams can be difficult, but if you study you should be fine. Really recommend taking his course.
His tests are damn near impossible
He is very contradictory during lecture. He says one thing, then says forget what I said in the last 20 minutes b/c that's wrong. He says don't take notes on this b/c it's not on the test, but it ends up being on the test anyway. His assignments & due dates are a mess on Blackboard. He does not give clear directions at all.
His powerpoints are terrible. He jumps around rapidly between contradicting points. It is hard to tell when he is serious or joking because he uses so many memes. His tests have multiple choices selections ranging from a through abcde. He never goes over information to help prepare for the book tests. He doesnt go over tests either. Don't take him.
Tests are impossible to pass no matter how hard you study. He doesn't even provide a study guide. If you're a minute late you get points deducted. He talks way too much and tells us "don't worry it won't be on the test" and it ends up being on the test anyway He tells us to share our thoughts and opinions then slams us shut anyway. This class sucks
Tests are impossible. You're considered lucky if end up getting a C. And there's no way to argue with him for points as he's always "right" apparently. Just do yourself a favor and get someone else. It will save you from dropping the course.
He treats the class like an entirely online class by using blackboard heavily, but with the caveat of mandatory lecture. He doesnt even update blackboard regularly by opening submission links or updating grades. if you ask question, he says go check blackboard, but you must search 100s of folders to find the document you are looking for. its a mess
He docks you points for walking in 30 seconds late. He is anti-computer anti-tablet for notetaking. Make sure you have accommodations to get thru this course to take notes on computer, tablet, and record lectures. It is the only way to pass. You must memorize countless lines of scripture to do well on tests and even then it is nearly impossible.
You have to read a total of 4 books and 1 book for extra credit ($$$) . Each book is followed up with an essay (4-5 essays) and a test (4-5 test) Then there's the midterm, final, final essay and obviously homework that takes up a lot of time to complete. In other words, this class is a lot. The tests are also very difficult
The 1st half of the class had a fixed calendar of lectures, but the 2nd half we voted on which topics to cover, however he undermined the winning voted topics and just did the lecture the way he wanted. Lectures are same way, he says one thing, and says contradicting points and you never know which will be the right answer on the tests.
He admitted that it is perfectly acceptable to fail the course as long as you learned something from the class. He is well aware that he makes his exams nearly impossible to pass. There were 5 book tests, 2 lecture tests & 5 essays to write & countless daily assignments in blackboard on top of it. Be prepared to do a ton of work just to pass.
I'm not really sure how he has a 3.6 as the score was very misleading. He's rude and arrogant. He teaches the class based on his opinions. Students are not allowed to correct him if he misrepresents their religions. There's tones of work which was hard to keep up with in the semester. The homework and tests are impossible. He definitely isnt a 3.6
Mr. Costell is one of the best professors at this school, he makes this class so interesting and so funny. I actually really enjoy his class and the books and topics he goes over. The tests can be hard if you don't take notes or study them, other than that he makes this class absolutely more than enjoyable.
Costell's World Religions is my most favorite class, because: offers a few options for each required reading; the class has a clear structure; he gives plenty of time so that you can begin major assignments and the project. He also critiques the justifications for various religions, which gives the INCORRECT impression of him "spreading" atheism.
He does not give clear instructions and his feedback includes disparaging comments.
Terrible instructor. Messy, frantic, & chaotic powerpoints. Tests have little to no correlation to the material of the powerpoints. You must attend class for points, but also you must self-study the books like an online course. Class attendance & lecture does not help prepare for exams. He does not allow typing lecture notes, despite going so fast.
He has horrendous teaching methodologies. You cant type lecture notes He lacks clarity in everything he says He talks likes hes joking so you dont know to take it seriously for tests. He gives no direction to what will be on tests. He uses too many memes b/c he is a meme. He speaks of right and wrong facts so you dont know which will be on tests.
Costell is one of the best professors I've studied under. Very approachable, respects all viewpoints, fun sense of humor, a master of the content, brilliant, and kind. You can tell he truly loves what he does, and his devotion to that shines through with how animated he is. He will challenge the way you think and see the world in a vital way.
Mr. Costell is unlike most college professors, and I mean that in the very best way possible. In my opinion, he teaches his students in hopes of them learning, understanding, and even considering pressing, real-world events instead of teaching the standard curriculum and worrying about possible bad grades given. His powerpoints are always on point!
Professor Costell is one of the most chill professors you will ever meet. He's open-minded, understanding, reasonable, has the best vibes, and does his best to engage everyone. Simply participate and you'll be better than fine. He does not assign much homework, only what's necessary. He makes going to class feel like it's not a chore.
The easiest way I can describe Professor Costell is the fact that the average grade in the class I took was a 50%. I took an 8 week course with him which was based on a total of 100 points. Each homework assignment is worth a whopping 1 point or 1% of your grade. Be prepared for a dreadful experience.
This professor is funny as hell and I love him for it. His funny attitude and his personality is one of my favorites. Trust me, it's well worth it.
I was super scared to take Intro to Philosophy but Professor Costell has made it one of my favorite classes I have taken. He does a great job at explaining the things that you need to do in order to succeed in his class. You will do well in this class if you do the homework and study for the exams.
Costell finds ways to deduct points that have nothing to do with the subject, including tricky extra credit for which students are enticed to google possible answers, and then he ensnares you for plagiarism
Costell is the best professor I've ever had. I genuinely use everything he taught me everyday. The books he has you read are cheap and will be some of the best books you'll ever encounter. I'm usually not a big fan of lectures but his lectures are also excellent and he is hilarious which of course, makes it easier to listen. Best professor ever.
By far the funniest professor I have ever taken. Costell has a great sense of humor and teaching style. One of those teachers that you can tell actually takes pride in what he does. grading is a little hard but he's a really good teacher. Fairly lecture-heavy class but the way he teaches is intriguing. Not a lot of homework!
Avoid at all costs. I took his religions class and it seemed like he wanted everyone to stop believing in their faith cause it was “dumb”. Constantly tried to knock down Christianity. Its his way or no way. I would not recommend. His test were very confusing and presentations were all over the place. VERY CONTRADICTORY
Professor Costell makes this class really engaging and enjoyable. His humor and personality make the lectures fun. While the exams can be challenging, using resources like the textbook and unstuckstudy can help prepare you. Overall, it's a worthwhile class.
Allen Costell is by far the most memorable professor I've ever had. He taught me to think genuinely and critically, and reshaped the way I approach my life as a whole. He is the only teacher I've ever had who has impacted me in such a way, and I could not be more grateful. Take his course, but only if you are willing to grow; this is not an easy A!
Best professor Ive ever had, very funny and made going to class a lot more fun and not miserable.
Got an F on attendance for missing 2 classes. He talked about Trump a lot, which is annoying because it was a class based on world religion. If your opinion doesn't align with his you will fail as his slides are the entirety of the class. You have midterm, final, one project and 3 book quizzes. Those will make/break the grade. Disappointing class.
