Great prof! Funny, interesting, caring; he really wants his class to understand the material and does everything within his abilities to make that happen. The first Finance prof who actually MAKES SENSE!!! I hope he continues teaching at Ryerson for many years to come.
Allan's simply one of the best profs in the School of Business. Extremely helpful, made classes fun, available for help almost 24/7 on Blackboard/email, etc. The only prof. I know of who went through the pains of collecting prev. exams and providing them with solutions. Shares good examples and likes to get chilli peppers on rate myprofessors. :p
A great professor. The first I've ever had who's been able to generate energy and interest for the majority of students in a mandatory finance class. I can whole heartedly recommend his classes.
Awesome Prof! If he can teach me finance he can teach anyone!
AMAZING teacher, made the most boring class really interesting. NEVER EVER miss his lecture, no reason to buy the book. Take good notes, 95% of the test is from his notes. Start early on the project, and just know his notes.
awesome teacher...relates course to today's issues to keep it interesting and practical...genuine hard worker (e.g., powerpoint slides and custom-made exams)...didn't do well on midterm cuz i didn't study (B-), but i jumped to an A- by doing really well on the final. i should've wrote most of the major paper, cuz then it would've been higher than A-
Al is a great guy, always open for questions, concerns, suggestions etc. As a finance major, he's the best finance prof I've had at Ryerson. He's not the easiest but he's fair.
He is very nice. He knows his stuffs. Honestly, I hate ethics class, but he made a very boring topic into a very interesting topic. Every class I learned something new. His information is very useful esp for my job since his lecture is up to date. He is extremely hardworking. But in order to get a good mark, u need to earn it. No free lunch.
take him. He actually enjoyed teaching and you will benefit a great deal from his class. His is way cool.
Best Prof. ever if you want to learn and walkaway take this course with him. He is a true Professor and cares about his students and their success.
One of the top finance and business professors at Ryerson. Knowledgeable, interesting, helpful.. His tests and grading standards aren't easy, but they are fair and he will go out of his way to make sure you perform well..
He is awesome best prof ever...u have to take him...he is not hard but you do have to study for his test!! just go to class which is not as painful as one would think for an Ethics class
Not only does he provide the class with up-to-date information, but he presents it in an entertaining& memorable manner. He knows his material really well, and there isn't something he won't answer. I suggest you attend the class, as his tests are based on lecture materials. You are expected to work hard for your mark, but, trust me, it's worth it!
GOOD PROF. Make sure ou g to class and take lot of notes the midterm and final are straight from his class notes.
Good prof, MUST go to class! final was hard!
Very helpful prof and quite funny at times (must love wrestling since he mentioned Friday Night Smackdown several times). He is helpful, has message board which he checks religiously..i don't think there is another prof in his league when it comes to that. Open to emails. Take him..or he'll lay the smackdown on you :)
midterm avg was low, but the midterm wasn't really that bad. a lot of the questions were simply derived from the textbook, so if u mastered the text questions, it was fairly easy. i'm sure a lot of people just didn't study hard enough; finance takes more practice than people think! if ur not good at it, practice till it becomes second nature!
prolly best FIN prof out there! caring; can teach; and funny as hell! LOL, he even mocked my tutor, who I got help from after my disastrous midterm. with the tutor's assistance along with goss' continued support, ended up with an A-! with profs like him, ryerson's reputation will get better quickly!
The best prof I had at ryerson. Makes the class very interesting specially with all the current events. His exams are a little tricky and he tests you on his lectures. I went to all his lectures but still found some of the questions a little tricky. Overall really great guy, funny, and helpful..We need more profs like him!!!
He is the best prof you'll ever have for finance. He explains in a way that makes it easy to understand. He posts up lots of sample quizzes and old midterms and prepares you well for the final. All in all, an awesome prof!
great prof, very hard midterm but the exam will seem as a joke compared to other classes. great sense of humor.
The best prof for FIN 401, hands down! Funny guy, and he makes sure to help you out as much. I got several email replies where I sent it at 10 at night and he replied at midnight!!! Seriously he is the best and very caring! Don't be shy for help, he is awesome, but the course isnt a walk in the park- avg midterm was 22/40! SO YOU MUST STUDY TOO!
best prof, helps you so much by giving you past years test and final exams; i studuied those and got an A- n the end from a B. midterm was hard but i really didnt study..
The best professor I have ever had! He would teach you both the academic and practical (what's happening in the real world) sides of Finance, which makes the course even more interesting. I used to skip a lot of classes before but since i took him, he made the course so interesting that I never missed a class - even when I wasn't feeling well!
One of the best teacher I have ever had. His lectures are very fun and educational. But exams are difficult so need to study hard.
dnt rmbr if i commented already but Goss is AWESOME!! Best prof to have for FIN401 esp if you're not a FIN major. Gives you tonnes of MC to practice with, some exact questions appear on exams. MT avg was 52%, I got 80% tho and I hate FIN..do ur work and you'll be fine. And remember Black Lipstick and Moose Pastures Inc haha
Absolutely amazing prof, very helpful, very engaging, and his classes are really fun. Pay attention to his lectures, and go to every class, the book is ok, but not very helpful. I never grasped finance concepts as well as I have with Goss, he is AWESOME!
AMAZING!! He teaches as though he loves his job and honestly, that's the kind of professor you can REALLY learn from! First thing he said to our 401 class was "My job is to make you pass and if YOU fail, I have also failed" MUST HAVE prof for finance! really knows what hes saying and can teach it flawlessly. I'd take any of his lectures any day!!!!
Allan Goss is sick prof. This man is the most chill of all at Ryerson. Gives amazing lectures with good examples/notes. lol, he told us to write 50cent lyrics on the cheat-sheet. LOL
His lectures are very useful and you think you understand everything but his midterm was so hard. Everyone i know failed or passed with 60-65 percent. Very upsetting because you think that you understand and will do well!!!!!!
A lot of people i know failed or barely passed the midterm. It was GHETTO hard! I just barely passed. I really hope he bellcurves the mark. I heard the other's class midterm was 2x easier.
Don't take Goss if you want to do well. He is a great prof, very smart but his midterms and finals are a nightmare. I have him for FIN 800 (Ethics in Finance) and he said that the midterm was the easiest he ever wrote but the class avg was 50. I mean he brings up calculus in our Business Ethics class...Imagine that!!
Good and can be funny at times. Extremely knowledgeable and can tell you financial news as it happens. (He reads this website too!) Try really hard to help you pass the course. He does take your accomplishments very personally, if you show some concerns. But his lectures can be slow & boring at times though.
Great Professor with an excellent attitude. He provides multiple examples of all concepts and conveys the info clearly. Always available for help and there is no person at the school that responds more quickly to emails than he does. He makes the class fun and interesting, especially for those of us who don't care for the finance maturial itself
Im SO thankful to have Professor Goss as my finance prof...he's the BEST prof you can ask for when it comes to finance :) he will go above and beyond to help his students!! Thank you Sir for your crystal clear notes, helpful attitude and words of encouragement when needed! Ryerson needs more profs like you. You made finance a learning experience.
This is the best prof that teaches Finance, and goes above expectations to help students. The coerce in general is very hard, but I thought his Mid-term (as well as other profs) were kinda unfair. However, this is the best prof you will find anywhere. He provides a lot of extra notes and makes the class really enjoyable to attend. Highly recommend
He's a really good prof. Lots of help and supplments and lots of jokes. But his testing (mid term) was pretty hard. But it did prepare us for the final TRUST! I got 50% on his mid term :'( but still got a B in the course with the extra help from him and his one-on-one office hours. =)
This guy knows how to teach well. Better than other profs. But his midterms are hard. Do all the questions at the back of the chapters AND the online website and you should be fine. He is funny.
Goss is a great professor, very knowledgeable and invites interesting guest speakers. The only caveat is that he might make you have a false sense of security. His midterm and exam were not as easy as he said. The main project was a pain to do but not that hard to get a B or B+. Asks lots of questions from lectures so make sure you attend.
Genuinely interested in student success. Not an easy course, but Prof. Goss is always helpful. Very knowledgeable, relevant, and funny.
Makes funny noises.
Allen is an extremely engaging teacher who is extremely passionate about his curriculum. He teaches this course with enthusiasm (and GREAT funny noises!) and provides relevant and timely (real-life) examples. Allen has also been extremely approachable after hours and . very fair in his grading
This man is soo sweet and teaches with so much passion. His exams are hard, but he'll help you SOOO much!! Excelllent prof! Take every finance course with him!
This was a complete waste of a course and Allan doesn't make it anymore useful. He made the course material extremely difficult and his testing did not even test our knowledge of the mathematics in the course. He was good for 401 but for 610... nooooo bad idea! :(
Al Goss is a complete gem! There are some comments about the 610 fiasco but at the end of the day he was thrown into a class he doesn't teach on a regular basis and he did a damn good job of teaching it. He is VERY understanding and looks out for his students. BEST FINANCE PROF AT RYERSON, HANDS DOWN, NO BOOST!!!!!!!
For someone who doesn't usually teach this course, he did an excellent job teaching it. Very entertaining and extremely helpful during office hours. He literally sat there for 30mins with me to help me solve complex problems. Very knowledgable. Worth the time taking finance classes with him!
Allen Goss needs to be promoted. I hope he gets his superiors to read these comments. He is by far the best teacher I have ever had in my entire student career. He cares about his students and takes the extra mile just to make sure everyone understands the material. I highly recommend taking his class Ryerson should hire more profs like Goss.
The course is boring and Alan's tone of voice doesn't help. He does try to make it fun but i day dreamed through the majority of the semester. His questions for the tests aren't as basic as you would expect; they actually make you think which is why they are often difficult for most people. He is a smart guy and was a good mentor/advisor to me
best finance prof! and hes funnyyyy!
AMAZING Prof! Very clear & helpful! He actually made himself available for the whole day right before final.I loved his lecture. He makes them so interesting with a sense of humor.I ended up with a B though I had to miss 4 classes. His midterm was very fair.I would recommend everyone to take him. "MPI" you will find out what it means in his class:P
I don't know why he would screw everyone over on the mid term. Like there was no math, and barely anything from the textbook! So many people dropped the course thanks to him and he didn't even know his material that well to teach it. He's lucky he gets paid no matter how badly his students do in the course.
A good professor in regards to academics. Beyond his research I believe he has a great teaching ability. Disappointedly, Allan has no respect for his students as people. Recognizing we are more than a number would of made taking class with him alot more enjoyable. Some situations are completely out of students control - he needs to understand this
Midterm was harder than some of the other profs. He likes to talk with girls more than guys.
U GOTTA GET GOSS! He takes the empty cup approach to teaching - assumes students have little knowledge @ first. He will tell you absolutely everything you need to know in terms you can understand. Helpful because it benefits everyone in the room. Good pace, enthusiastic presentation, unparalleled resources... U GOTTA GET GOSS!
Exemplary professor.
REALLY GOOD PROF. Keeps you engaged... Finance is a boring course! Always on time and near midterms and finals he provides you with a lot of extra help (sample tests and questions), but you have to study!
Simply the best.
Great prof, provides lots of resources and teaches in a crystal clear manner. Study WAY AHEAD OF TIME (esp. for the FINAL which I underestimated despite his warning; own fault), do the assigned Qs, look at his resources and ask him for any help. Make a strong cribsheet with the steps. Midterm is quite fair as long as you keep up. Recommended!
One of the best professors at Ryerson, you have to study hard but he is a great teacher and willing to help way beyond what he has to
Best prof I have had thus far in Ryerson (in my 3rd yr now). He really goes the extra mile to make sure you understand the material. Highly recommended.
He is a very good prof but honestly the midterm was very hard alot of people failed it and i felt liek he skrewed us over however i found the exam eazy and it helped raise my mark. Overall good proff that will help you whenever u need help and prepares you for the exam but watch out for the midterm :)
theres a reason his reviews and ratings are so high... He is an amazing prof... tells you whats on the mid term/exam and is willing to help. He is the best prof i ever had will take more classes with him... he is extremely knowldegable and always willing to help
An absolute beaut. Fav prof ive had. Makes listening to finance and numbers easy. Id definitely take a class from him again.
Goss is a very good prof. He's easy going and helpful. He tells you everything you need to know. University requires effort from students, and he makes everything easy for you to understand. Midterm and Final were just as fair, I've taken other finance profs this semester and he was the most thorough and comprehensive. Take him for 401 kids!
Fantastic prof! Helps you; provides all the tools you can possibly imagine (review packages, helpful formulas not in the book, etc.) you need to succeed. MT & Final was fair. Always accessible via email in <24hr response. Take this course with Goss! If you put in the effort not only will you pass but you will actually LEARN!
Very good at what he teaches, does so many examples and posts them up. Very clear and precise in his examples. Funny, easygoing, and down to earth.
by far Ryersons best prof. He is extremely educated. Very smart he knows his stuff like the back of his hand. He is extremely funny which makes you want to learn and go to class. He is hilarious and always willing to help and go above and beyond. He is an absolute asset to Ryerson Ryerson needs to give him a serious raise he deserves it Thanks Goss
worlds greatest prof. This is my second time with Dr. Goss... He is absolutely amazing. Helps you in every way he can and even tells you what will be on the exam. If you listen to him and go to class you will do well. He is extremely funny. Dr. Goss know what hes talking about and definitely knows how to teach 5 star prof
He is funny, BUT he has TOO high an expectation for the tests. I studied extensively and averaged 70% on the tests. He is not realistic one bit when it comes to making exams and midterms and WILL ask you specific theorist from specific sections of a 500 page text. If you want a good laugh take his class, if you want a FAIR grade take another prof
I agree with the last two posts. I got a C in his class and worked really hard too. His questions are very specific. So when you study...you have to take alot of notes. Dont just passively read the texts. You also have to go to every class and take good notes. However I understand why he's tough. It IS a fourth year course.
He cancelled some classes, including the last class, which was supposed to be for final exam review. Midterm and final are very difficult. I went to every class and did all of the readings. I worked really hard and still ended up with a low grade. As a person, heâ??s nice, but his tests are not fair. If possible, take this course with another prof.
This course is difficult! One mid term 30%, a group paper 30% and a final 40%. Each and one of them were difficult with Goss. For the mid term, make sure you study all his power points cause that's what is tested but it was still a very tricky mid term, a lot of my friends did bad.. Final was hard too! He tricks you alot on the final so be careful
Was lucky to get a pretty decent mark, studied like crazy for the final because of all the readings he tests on. Didn't enjoy the course at all.
He is a very nice man and a good professor. He is very helpful and tries to do everything to ensure that students pass.
Great prof for a very useful course! Goss is clearly interested in having his students fully understand Excel. It's time consuming but everyone did well until the final, which caused many to lose their As and A+s. =\ The practical concept of the final is good, but execution needs work. Course is going through changes again, but take it with Goss!
Great prof!! Nicest finance prof , actually teaches! Cares about students
cool guy. helps a lot
This is my second time taking a class with him. He explains well and gives good examples. He is friendly and approachable. He tries to help students do well. There are clicker questions with marks for the correct answer and for participation. The tests are multiple choice with crib sheet. The weekly pretests were easy.
Goss is a nice guy with a great personality. This course and its textbook are awful for one semester, but Goss helps reduce the awfulness of the textbook. Other than that final was an extreme killer on grade for this course wich Goss obviously did to lower course average because it was so high. Take 612 online, final would be killer with goss
Recommended. Clear, knowledgeable and very helpful. Will answer any questions you have regarding finance and all finance courses taught at Ryerson. Midterms were half open book and final exam, you can bring a cheat sheet. He does his best to make lectures less boring as the textbook content can be boring. He said course will be changed soon.
Great professor, lectures are always interesting and fun. He explains concepts clearly and with enthusiasm and I love the little stories he tells! He made the course bearable. The course structure might be changing soon so take my comment with a grain of salt but as a lecturer, Goss is great. Course breakdown is the same as the comment below.
Fantastic Prof! By far the most interesting and entertaining professor on campus! He keeps the class engaged and involved throughout the entire lecture. If he's teaching ANY finance courses, I recommend you taking it.
Recommended. Very nice and will try his best to ensure that all his students get a great mark in the course. Tries to be very clear and will do some problems to further help us understand the content. Assignment was very difficult, but the exams were easy. Midterm was open book, and final exam was closed book with a cheat sheet.
Great professor! Will go through all kinds of questions in class to make sure you understand the topics and then most often it is those types of questions you see on the exams, the assignment is very difficult and requires a very strong group, he does a lot to help the students though and is definitely one of the best professors on campus !
I have no idea how this professor is head of finance. He does not teach. He lectures from slides and barely does any calculations with you. I had him twice now for 612 also. He is awful. Avoid
Hes a funny guy he likes to test on the math questions for this course even though its mostly theory so you should know the math for the exams. Tricky tests but the assignments not that bad but if you put in the reading and know the math you'll be fine
With Dr. Goss, his lead up to the final is pretty clear cut. He tells you what to study for during the midterm(s) and as a result there are no surprises. In order to get a good mark, you need to go into the exam with a high mark because his finals are super tough. Pay attention to in class lectures, a few exam questions are based on in class stuff
Great professor, makes his lectures very clear for his students and outlines what will be on the tests, the exam is much tougher than the midterm but with the clicker questions throughout the term you should have a pretty high mark, one of the best professor in the school !
Goss is a pretty good professor, the lectures are straightforward and the Clicker questions in-class are often easy marks. The weekly quizzes are easy as well. The midterm was simple but the final is tough and worth about half your grade.
It is really a hard course. He is very helpful and tries to pass everyone. He does not make ppt for this course. So, please read the books and do the practice questions. It has a project to do. Please find smart groupmates.
He's generally lenient when marking but that doesn't mean it is easy. I invested way more time in the course than I intended but learned a lot out of it. The assignment was tough in the sense that it takes time to decode, but you'll reach a point where you don't care if you are doing it right anymore. Exam is not as fair as I hoped.
Hes really nice, funny and helpful. The term tests were pretty tough the final wasn't too bad but if the class does poorly he makes up for it. The assignment was long and pretty tough but groups of 6 were allowed and he marked it generously and he also tries to make everyone pass the course hes a great prof overall
He is the best prof in all of Ted Rogers, there is a reason he is the chair as he is a very good teacher. Overall some of the material is dry and boring but he makes it interesting and cracks allot of jokes to get through the material. Would defiantly take a class with him again!
Best finance professor at Ted Rogers School of Management. He really cares about his students and their success.
Allen is a great guy and really cares about his students. He's very personable and does his best to make Finance fun. I was particularly impressed by how he made up a class he missed due to professional obligations, at the end of the semester (most instructors wouldn't bother), which was very valuable in a mandatory course with a 50% final exam.
Dr. Goss is a great prof and is very approchable. The course content is fairly dry, so the class itself can be kind of boring. There is a TON of content covered in class so I would suggest going. Practice all review questions and know them inside out and you are sure to get an A on the midterm. Final exam was brutal, but written by another prof.
He's not a bad prof, he tries to make Finance fun and engaging. However, the assignments that was provided to us were very time consuming for not much weighting. I suggest to reduce the required for the assignments as this course is a very heavy course overall. He marks fair overall, and can help you to improve on your assignments.
Allen Goss really cares about his students and it shows when he extends deadlines because everyone is stressed. There is so much content in this course that you need to be up to date with readings because its worth 30% of your mark (10% quizzes) but you also use the examples in the readings for your valuation reports. Remember, FORMAT MATTERS
Professor Goss TRULY, genuinely wants his students to succeed; he's always asking for feedback on students' preferred ways of evaluation so he can take that into account for future semesters; he's a very fair grader as well. Quizzes are a bit tough, but the assignments (with a lot of effort) are where you'll find better luck with good grades!
The prof is not interested in teaching. Very interested in showing what he knows. Lectures are boring & he makes sure to keep it that way. Didn't learn any finance. The prof pretended to be flexible about assignment dates but gave everything last minute. So the accommodation was laughable. Tests were just useless rat race.
Al made finance fun!! Please please pleeeease go to his lectures. He makes the material so easy to understand. Lots of examples from real life to illustrate the concepts. He worked through a bunch of sample problems in each class. He will answer all of your questions in the simplest terms, without being condescending. 10/10
Professor Goss does a phenomenal job in trying to accommodate everyone's schedules and learning preferences, even going so far as providing us with his own templates and posting supplemental material online. He is patient with his Q&A time and is genuinely invested in students & their academic growth. I highly recommend! - CP
He is great in the lectures and knows how to teach...the only problem is that the midterm is nothing like what he taught in class. Dr. Melissa T. makes the midterm and she is not very kind thus, everyone is getting screwed over.
I'm taking a graduate-level course with Dr. Goss and he has been so kind and patient with myself and the rest of the class. He tries his best to make the content engaging and really goes above & beyond with his "ask Al" presentations - Some great learnings and with preparation the midterm was fair and the final was straightforward
Nice guy but over rated, FIN401 is a disaster of a course, Melissa Toffanin makes the midterm and final extremely difficult. Midterm average was a failing average and yet somehow they are angry at us. Your better off teaching this course to yourself, this whole course needs to be revised.
Dr. Goss is great! Just mind your expectations. I like his lectures, they are different than other profs. He doesn't use slides and explains THE COURSES VERY DETAILED concepts in plain words; like a lecturer. The thing is the midterm was so hard that every question was 3 questions and the final was so easy that I did well without studying for it.
Tough class but this professor at least makes his lectures fun while solving the most important questions of each chapter.
Al genuinely cares about his students and just wants you to be able to pass. The course content is pretty difficult if you don't do the homework and grind out textbook questions. As a professor and human Al is great, but if you're not someone who's naturally gifted at working with numbers, be prepared to grind out review questions.
This course is tough, but prof did his best to prepare us. He doesn't use slides, just textbook questions in class. The midterm was hard with the class average in the 40s, and only a 5% boost was given. Final is much easier. To at least pass the exams, focus on doing the textbook questions and old exams.
This guy held a 5 hour extra review class during the exam period. I haven't seen any other professors do that. If that doesn't earn him a good rating, I don't know what does. The difficulty of the exams varies, the midterm was quite hard in my opinion but the final wasn't too bad. I like the way he goes through problems, overall very good prof.
Al gave our whole FIN401 class a final exam review session that ended up lasting 5 hrs of him walking us through questions and answering anything the students needed- ended up boosting the final average from the midterm and it was so helpful! He keeps his lectures engaging and genuinely cares when students ask questions
Professor Goss runs a tough class, but engaging with the material and using resources like the free textbook and tools like unstuck study can really help. Stay on top of the homework and you'll get a lot out of the class.
What a horrible experience. This is his first semester teaching FIN621, and he has revamped the entire course outline. Failing average for the midterm, so he offered 20% of the midterm grade to be moved to the final for a 65% final. Reduced the number of crib sheets and got rid of the 10% bonus that the other professor offered. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
He was a really good instructor. His lectures were clear, easy to follow, and he always explained concepts in a way that made sense. The exams were tough, but he clarified what to study. I appreciated his effort in teaching and ensuring we understood the material.
allen goss makes finance just a little easier. he's kind and helpful and actually wants his students to pass. the exams were tough but its finance so thats expected. i recommend him before any finance prof at this school
Never provided a practice exam, so it was difficult to prepare for the exams as those rlly helped me for FIN401. However, he was understanding as he made mark adjustments due to the low class averages. Be ready to do LONG MyLabs. To at least pass the exams, do the MyLab/textbook questions and add all his PowerPoint notes to your cheat sheet.
