As a student who absolutely detests calculus, having Allen as a professor this summer has been amazing. He's the type of professor that takes the time to explain every step in detail. I sat in on other calc profs' lectures during the year, and found Allen's teaching style to be far superior. If you have the chance to take one of his classes, do it!
Had him for Calc during Summer intersession and I can say I've learned more from 6 weeks his lectures than an entire semester of my prev. prof's. I regret not visiting his office hours (he mentions it a lot in class). Very lively lectures and humorous. I adored this prof! Hopefully teaches full semester next year.
Good at explaining concepts. Very passionate about calculus
Loved his history/application tidbits on calculus, made it far more interesting. Very passionate and intelligent about the subject. His quizzes are appropriate and only difficult if you're not keeping up. He likes to hand write long explanations to clarify concepts, so beware if you're not big on reading comprehension. Great help at office hours.
Dr. O'Hara is an excellent professor for math 1229! He seemed a little serious the first couple of lectures, but he is outstanding and easy to follow, definitely one of the best instructors for math 1229. He can talk to students in a clear way. He cares about his students.
Compared to the other Calc profs at Western O'Hara is the best bet. He states at the beginning of his class that textbook work is the most important if you wish to do well, which I agree with, but his lectures are also very good. If I had one gripe it would be that his examples are not hard enough compared to his quizzes and exams.
He offers a practice quiz before every quiz, which are usually very similar to the actual quiz. He usually explains material very well but is also available to answer your questions and help you understand concepts. He's got a touch of sassiness and sarcasm which makes class enjoyable. Overall, the best math professor I have come across so far.
explains all theorems clearly and much easier to understand.
I had him in the summer and he was one of the best math profs I've ever had. He gives a lot of examples in lectures so take good notes because a lot of them end up on quizzes. His quizzes were pretty easy if you did and understood the homework, and same goes for the final. He's always available for extra help so make good use of that!
Best calc prof hands down, he's fun, engaging, his tests and exams are fair, and if you pay attention in class/do at least some of the homework, you'll do great. He really cares about his students, and will do review sessions before exams. He'll give plenty of practise tests/exams and provide videos of him explaining the answers.
Great lecturer. Funny guy and creates video solutions to all his practice quizzes.
Amazing Prof, I originally had a different prof and he ended up taking over our class and he was absolutely the best prof I have ever had. He is clear, precise and is very organized. Always on time for lectures, makes himself very available outside of class for help and keeps you engaged. He is very fair, and wants to see everyone do well.
Literally the best calculus prof out there - made me love calc lectures. He's hilarious and you can tell he really loves calculus and his little History tidbits are amazing. Love his youtube videos of him answering the quizzes -- super helpful. Love him <3
Best prof I had so far. Really made you want to come to lecture, if not for the content for his awsome personality and hilarious jokes. Can't wait to take another of his classes!
Dr. O'Hara is amazing. He is a great professor and is so thorough in his lectures. It was my second time taking the course and he made it so much easier. He gives great examples and he's really funny.
Best Prof I have had in first year
A real nice professor!
Great Prof. Gives extremely clear lectures with good examples. Responds to emails and is helpful with problems. Posts videos to help teach concepts outside of class.
O'Hara was a really great prof. Math 1228 isn't really a course you need to attend to pass but he taught well so I went anyway. He makes funny jokes and explain concepts well.
1600 is a difficult course for begginers in math, there's alot of theory involved, and this is very hard to understand from textbooks. He manages to break each chapter down clearly, and helps you understand it raher than just memorize formulas. I am astonished at his ability to teach and he has an amazing understanding of how students think.
Great prof
He is a very good prof, but if you skip a class, you will miss out so much that not a lot of people are willing to share their notes. Take him only if you are ready to attend all lectures. Otherwise, he is a fun guy and even managed to quote infinity war in is classes. He is funny and serious, balanced like all things should be
OHara is amazing, he explains concepts really well and helps you understand it first before just plugging in values.
One of the best profs to prepare you for the tests. All his examples he does in class are relevant to the course, and will most likely show up on the exam. If he's teaching a course, take it instantly. Explanations are amazing and you'll learn alot.
Great prof, really funny and knows how to teach math well enough for everyone to understand. His examples are consistent with what might be on the exams.
O'Hara was hands down the best calculus prof I have ever experience or heard of at Western. If you want someone super sarcastic and an overall character, highly recommend. He makes class time fly and he classes are a little bit harder than the exams so you will be prepared. He is also excellent at explaining things. Very fast paced class.
Amazing prof! Explains the content very clearly and makes even the hardest concepts fairly easy to understand. He is always approachable after class and during office hours to help you understand the content. I loved showing up to his classes.
He's such a great lecturer. He explains math way better than any other calc prof at Western. Seriously, a gem! You won't want to skip class because it's engaging and fun and clear. If you can, take his course!!
A gem. Get in his classes. Refresh that course enrollment page. But don't miss class, no one I know has once read the textbook because he's really good at explaining unfamiliar concepts. Just go to class and do the practice problems, you'll be gucci.
The best professor who has ever walked the earth. Very engaging, takes time to explain concepts, and helps students when they are struggling. His dry humor is king.
Honestly after taking a couple math courses at Western, probably one of the best lecturers. You can tell Professor O'Hara really cares about his students and never cuts corners when it comes to his lectures. He assigns the most relevant and helpful homework that makes you more than prepared for exams.
he's the prof i've had in uni and i honestly love him! had him for calc 1000 too and i loved this course, even online!! please please take this with him!!!!
Calc isn't my best subject but O'Hara made my summer school experience much better! He's enthusiastic to teach and gives straight forward lectures, just practice over his questions, read his slides, and your all good!
The best professor i've ever had! Though initially i am always a huge fan of math , he has made it much more impressive. Math 1229 is super easy for me that I can even just skip every class and get a A plus, however, Dr.O'hara got some magic power that encouraged me to attend his class 3 times a week at 8:30 in the morning.
Amazing Prof! Had him over the summer and he made a usually very difficult course make sense. He's literally the reason I switched into math. Everyone I know who has had him agrees. He's very responsive to emails and understanding. If you have a question, he'll go out of his way to make sure you understand. An amazing prof and human being.
Teaches one of the easiest courses at Western and does so very well. His lectures are pretty fun to watch (watch on 1.5 speed as it'll sound more normal). He definitely makes make more fun than confusing. My only criticism would be a lack of examples, especially difficult ones for testable concepts. As such, I'd rate 4.5/5 if that was an option
Sounds like he's a good prof with in-class lectures but online he is horrible. Posted YouTube videos for the year and never answered emails or forum posts when people were having issues. He answered my email once and was quite rude when I just needed some guidance for a lesson. Im sure he's great in person but trust me his online classes suck.
I took O'Hara's class and it was one of my favourites (from someone who usually hates math)!! You definitely can't go wrong by taking his class. His lectures are very clear, and he explains concepts well (I didn't need to use the textbook once). He also records solutions to all the homework. I've never been strong in math and I did really well.
The worst at explaining things. Doesn't care.
Create around 1000 videos of lectures and examples of all sorts of test style questions, available right from the start of the class. Very good explanations, not only at explaining the math itself but also explaining how to approach the problems we'd see on the tests. Very detailed lessons and a very engaging professor.
His lectures match up perfectly to the tests and quizzes and overall, it was a pretty good course. Just make sure to watch his lectures on x1.25 speed at least, it'll go by a lot faster (since there are a lot)
I had to view his lectures because my own profs material was lacking. Everything was clear and easy to follow.
Excellent videos (lectures and problems). Explains concepts very concisely. Watching his videos and doing the practice questions he gives are the only things you need to do to succeed in this course.
Prof O'hara is one of the best teachers I've had. He explains concepts so well, and gives nicely detailed explanations for practice questions. Lectures are short, and simple. My only wish is that there were more difficult practice questions included. His tests are very fair, and easy. He has re-sparked my enjoyment for math!
OHaras assessments were super straightforward and easy to understand. However I never spoke to him once and he never replied to my emails. I wish he interacted with us more instead of posting old videos. Despite that his videos were very thorough and easy to understand. Really good teacher but wish he was more engaging with students.
His videos are very good. I could rewatch parts over and over so that I could understand the math. He made the course easy to follow for everyone. There were many examples with questions like on the test. He was very detailed in emails. Thank you professor Ohara.
The best professor I've ever met.
Honest Review: As a TA for Calc, O'Hara was horrible compared to the other Calc TA's. Because of him, I nearly failed the course. He refused to answer my questions right before the 2nd midterm. His Zoom tutorials, consisting of 80+ students, were chaotic becuz students bombarded questions at him nonstop. Never goes into detail with each Calc topic.
Guy is funny, smart, nice.
Never talked to him once but loved the lec vids. Lots of work though if you want to understand anything. Tests and exam were stressful but only the first test was the worst.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. All the lectures are easy to follow and he has videos taking you through each homework question. I actually enjoyed math for the first time. The course is fairly easy. His tests are fair and I crammed a day or 2 before each exam and did decent.
Prof O'hara was SUCH A GEM for math 1228! His lectures are short and concise, which was AMAZING, and even though many people say he doesn't do enough examples, he has an entire playlist of "worked examples" of questions that he posts full video solutions for... for every single unit! He made me love math again :) take his class - you won't regret!
Super nice prof. Easy to understnad. 100% would take future classes with him if possible.
Great professor, knows what he is talking about. Helpful and pretty chill
great at explaining concepts and provides a super fair mark breakdown! you can tell he wants you to succeed. provides so much help and practice videos/questions. hard to do poorly in this class. he is also very nice and approachable
I have professor O'Hara in a hybrid course (online lectures, in person tutorials and exams). His videos are engaging and easy to follow even if you are bad at math. I personally don't enjoy statistics but he breaks down the materials very clearly. First exam is brutal but as the course progress it gets better. Do the practice exams, you'll be fine.
His course materials are very organized. He often posts the lecture slides and the homework solutions before next week, so students have access to them at any time. He explains the lectures and homework solutions step by step, which makes students clear about how to solve. He is glad to hear questions and concerns from students, even it is online.
O'Hara shows different ways to approach problems which is very helpful for problem-solving. He also teaches at a great pace for those who only want to watch the lecture once to understand it. I'm not great at math but this course was a confidence booster for me.
His Calc 1501 summer course was asynchronous, textbook was recommended but I passed with an 84 without it. His lectures were straightforward and he always answered emails if I had any questions. It was assignment heavy which I liked over test heavy. Only thing is he overuses the word "exotic" to describe things (kinda weird tbh). Otherwise great :D
Good professor overall but is rude at times when students have questions
Good at explaining concepts but I found the course difficult and regret taking it as an elective. I would find another course to take as an elective/bird course unless your good at math.
Such a sweet guy! Really enjoyed his classes
Always hated math but O'Hara's class was by far my fave!! He cracked me up every morning and made complicated concepts seem simple. Never left a lecture feeling confused. Absolute legend 10000/10
Favourite math teacher I've ever had. Made solution videos for every homework problem and keeps the lecture videos short and simple with detailed explanation. Exams are fair too.
he is THE GOAT. the best ive ever had. funniest human god sent to western. wouldnt have gotten the grade if it wasnt for him. we need more profs like him please
Very easy to understand lecture videos, lots of resources for homework and practice questions
The only so far good teaching skills prof in my first years experience. Prayers
This is the second math course I've taken by this Prof and while I think that he does a good job at teaching the materials in a way that isn't complicated and dumbs things down to help out. The tests and quizzes are very heavy and hard, and wish their was some assignments instead of just quizzes to help boost grades.
Prof O'hara is great. He really knows his stuff and teaches in a way where students understand the material. I appreciated how he would actually go through examples with us instead of just showing slides. His exams are fair and he posts many useful resources to help students prepare. I really enjoyed his class overall!
O'Hara is a great prof because he cares about setting his students up for success. He goes through test-like questions in his classes and makes sure every question is answered to the best of his ability. He's also just a funny and chill dude.
Coming from a strong Math background, I can say with confidence that Allen O'Hara is a very talented teacher. Prof O'Hara is always clear and effective in his explanations. His lecture videos are always done professionally and encapsulate the perfect amount of review, while the solutions to practice problems are straightforward. 10/10 recommend.
Honestly great prof lecture videos are incredibly clear. I didn't do so great in his class becuase I didn't do much work, you are guaranteed an 80% if you do all the videos and practice questions.
O'Hara's videos are straight to the point with easily understood examples for each point, and are incredibly accessible. O'Hara is probably the best person I've had explain mathematics to me. Even if you're in Gorbanpour's class, I would still recommend watching O'Hara's videos as supplement because that's how good they are.
Guy is a g. Easy to follow lectures and explains concepts super simply. Additionally, if you need more help its always there, just go to tutorial. You don't even need the textbook if you do all O'Hara's practice questions and lecture videos.
his online videos are amazing and the resources he provides is very helpful, taking him again next semester
very easy to learn in his class, makes things simple and has uploaded a video of him solving every homework problem he does.. cant ask for much more
o'hara is easy and fun to learn from. he uploads videos for EVERY hw problem and is always enthusiastic. the hw prepares u well for the exam, and he gives u a very long time to do the exam too. there was also an avatar last airbender reference in one of his quizzes which means he has taste. he just takes a bit of time to reply to emails.
1228 is extremely easy if you are good at possibilities and stuff, o'hara is a great guy! He has amazing online lectures and very detailed and thorough video solutions to literally every practice questions. Practice tests are the same thing as the actual exam. Go through the practice tests and you will find the exam easy,.
Dr. O'Hara is a great maths prof, his tutorial sessions weren't long and he was hilarious sometimes. However, he speaks faster than the online video lectures. You can go to his office hour or Math Help Centre to ask questions if you have. I don't think this is a bird course. It should be fine if you study your notes, practice and do past exams.
The greatest math prof at Western, the GOAT!
SO good, understood everything and gave all the right tools to kill the exam
Great prof for any math you take. Highly recommend watching his videos instead of the other profs if you're having a hard time understanding the material. Very clear speaker and sets you up for success
O'Hara is genuinely such an amazing prof. I don't think I've come across anybody hating on him or his teachings. Watch and understand his videos, and you will do great in the class.
O'Hara is the only reason I did not fail this course. This was the only math/science class I've had since middle school where I never had to go to Youtube to get another explanation of a concept. Gives an almost overwhelming amount of videos of him doing problems step by step while explaining what he is doing for every concept.
He's a really nice guy and he explains concepts so perfectly. He talks a lot about how his handwriting is bad but honestly it's not horrible. He doesn't record lectures (I don't think any calc class does) so keep that in mind. He also gives lots of extra resources to study which is awesome. Wonderful prof, genuinely only time I've understood math.
In his tutorials he writes a helpful summary of all the key info learned for the week and goes through many good practice questions and exam style questions showing step by step solutions and makes things very simple and easy to understand, very good professor
O'Hara is a fantastic professor who goes through questions that are actually on the test. He states which questions to look out for and goes through them. I would recommend choosing him as your tutorial professor.
O'Hara is a great prof! His tutorials are really helpful for reviewing material covered by his online lectures and prepare you very well for the exams! He genuinely cares about his students and you can tell he wants everyone to succeed. As long as you show up, do the work and practice past exams (he posts them) than you are all set for an easy 90+
Lesson videos were extremely helpful and walked through the concepts clearly. He also goes through worked examples for each topic which is amazing. Practice exam questions were super accurate and made the class much less stressful
Great prof, his online content is great and very well organized. If you watch the videos, do the practice questions, and do the past midterms and exams that he posts, its very easy to do well in the class.
Calc 1000 is terrible, but Allen O'hara made the 7-9 pm lectures bearable. Very approachable if you have questions and lots of resources available on his website to practice (with video solutions!). He does not post lectures, all written on white board and erased... great lecturer tho. Midterm was fair, but the final was brutal (not his fault tho).
He's the best prof ever. His tutorials are so helpful, he literally tells you what will be on the exams
My goat even though I got smashed by finals. great lectures, very helpful.
Passionate, smart teacher. Will always recommend this class to others. O Hara is great.
God bless this man. Loved his tutorials and he made a seemingly boring class fun with his humor.
Probably one of the best and most clear professors I've had, the only reason I passed this course is because of O'hara. His online videos were super helpful and clear, and he answers questions very clearly and truly understands how students learn. If you're someone who relies on a good prof in order to learn, I would reccommend O'hara.
A true gem.
Prof. O'Hara explains concepts for Math 1228 very clearly and was very helpful during tutorials. Exams were easy as long as you studied. Would highly recommend attending his tutorial classes.
He explains concepts very clearly and videos were helpful to review when I forgot or did not fully understand a topic. If you understand the videos and practice questions, you will understand everything on the exams. Quizzes can be difficult wording wise, but it is beneficial to use them to study.
Professor O'Hara was great. Very accessible outside of tutorial hours, always responded to emails in a timely manner. Weekly qquizzes are very easy to do well on, exams are easy to get 90%+ on if you learn the material.
I love that he gives us practice problems that each have a video breaking down how he got the solution. I emailed him once and he was super kind (he's definitely cold to bad students tho). Somehow calculus isn't hard to comprehend when he teaches it. Advice: do the practice exams, note that assignments take sm time (like 12h), and class is hard!
The GOAT tbh. Super friendly and helpful, posts sooooo much supplemental lectures and material. Also post practice midterms and exams which are VERY helpful. Keep up with the lectures and do some practice questions and you should be fine.
Great professor, made everything easy to learn and the course is just easy. I like how he has a video solving each practice questions. The midterms have been very easy and straightforward. You can tell he wants all his students to succeed.
