He's cool, he helps you and stuff
He's awesome!
DR Rice is a little obsessive about some things, he's overal helpful but you can't slack at all or you're in deep. He's a good prof.
Funny and odd guy. Loved the essays, hated the tests. Didn't read so I bet thats why. His voice booms off the back wall so be in the mood for LOUD. I am taking another class with him next semester so I liked him enough you could say.
excellent
dr rice is awesome, so helpful and knows everything there is to know about medieval and middle english literature. he's a bit of a dork, you can definitly tell he has seen Lord of the Rings one too many times and still plays Dungeons and Dragons with his buddies[which he has confessed to by the way]
he makes reading old books fun and easier to understand. he knows everything about literature and keeps you entertained. his tests can be little hard but he's a good teacher
very good
I learned a ton in this class! It was really hard work, but it was worth it. He gave essay tests, which were really hard, but he was helpful and the tests were weighted so that if you didn't do well you could still pull the grade up. He gives helpful feedback. He's very enthusiastic and obviously loves literature.
I wasn't really sure if I was going to like reading stuff written by guys like Shakespeare but this teacher is awesome. He made everything funny and interesting. I learned alot to. If you have a chance to take this class, I would highly recommend it.
Dr. Rice is very helpfl and resourceful.
Rather enjoyed his class, but he hated my essays. I am usually a really good writer. He likes to assign a lot of work, but he makes it fun and interesting.
he said no one ever thought he was hot, well Professor Rice, i was listening. ;)
Love this man!
He's funny.
Ask him how he feels about the sooners.
So much fun!
I love this guy! He can keep my attention for an entire class period, something that is hard to do.
He is a lot of fun, and a great lecturer, but make sure you study the way he suggests if you want to do well on his tests, because they are not easy.
Dr. Rice is an awesome professor, I definitely recommend him. He's very entertaining, very knowledgeable, very easy to learn from, and he doesn't grade hard at all. I didn't even want to take this class, but he made it really fun and interesting. He likes to do a lot of group work and that's the only drawback I would list for him.
What a great instructor! He is helpful and makes you think. He really wants his students to learn!
Great teacher! So caring! So intelligent! He will educate you and enlighten you! Your writing will improve after his courses.
He's an absolutely wonderful professor. I'm a Biology major and I made an A, only because he's such a great teacher. By the way, he wanted a pepper and he got one from a married man... that's how HOT he really is!
Great as usual. Good teacher, and funny. He's so entertaining it is a pleasure to go to class just to hear his jokes.
Very demanding professor, fun teaching style. You will learn Shakespeare.
Nothing I like better than a passionate teacher. Dr. Rice knows his stuff and you can tell he loves it. Makes Chaucer a lot of fun. Tough on the grading... not so much that he grades tough... more that there are too few grades, so one bomb will kill your grade.
I was dreading this class but Dr. Rice made Chaucer bearable, even interesting. He knows his stuff and he's a tough grader on the in class essays. There are few grades so a bad one will hurt. Objective tests are tricky. Some of the things he said and did in class pissed me off but overall I'd recommend him. Dr. Lehman probably grades easier.
This class is definitely challenging, but I did learn more in this class than I have in any other class I have ever taken! You must attend class if you have any hope of getting a C or better! He makes class interesting and explains Chaucer better than anyone else, but his test are very difficult! Great prof though I loved him!
I have had 3 of Dr. Rice's classes, all at the graduate level. He is engaging, entertaining, and just plain fun. But don't be fooled by his easygoing manner. His tests are hard and the grading is severe. He will teach you how to write a great paper - and then expect one. The best thing he will teach you is how to teach.
I have had several of Dr. Rice's classes. He is simply the best college professor I have ever had. He is charismatic, brilliant (his depth knowledge of Medieval and Renaissance subjects is second to none at UCO), and he is challenging. Once you have sucessfully written an Arguable Thesis essays, everything else you write at UCO will seem trite.
he is a great teacher and is very good at making Shakespeare make sense. He really wants to help his students, you just have to ask.
Fantastic class. I don't know what I was thinking taking it as a freshman, but I enjoyed anyway. It is difficult, but definitely worth it. Rice is a great teacher, and you will by the end of his class know how to make a thesis with step by step instructions.
Dr. Rice has proven to be one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. His guides for essay writing were the most helpful things for me as a student. I wish I would have taken a class of his a long, long time ago.
Dr. Rice is a brilliant teacher and makes class interesting. He is pretty tough when it comes down to it, but you will really learn alot. If your GPA is borderline I'd suggest to beware unless you are really ready to put a lot of work into this class.
He expects a lot, but his classes are interesting and fun, and he is very helpful and fair.
He rocks!
This class completely revolutionized my thinking process. Rice expects a lot and has a high standard, but he teaches you how to get there every step of the way. One of the best profs I've had!
Dr. Rice is HIL-AR-IOUS! Watch out for and nail the arguable thesis early on, and you will be set.
Very great classes! Terrible tests and paper needs very difficult...not appropriate for freshman level course!!
Once you figure out what he wants he isn't too hard. His papers and essay exams are tough if you don't master how to argue a thesis. Awesome teacher though, I learned so much from him and he was so fun! He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes students like it too
I had Allen Rice for many classes and he is the absolute best English professor I have ever had (and I had alot). His knowledge is astounding and he is personable and just a pretty great dude.
Love. Love. Love taking class from Professor Rice. Best teacher I have had a UCO. He wants you to do great in his class and gives you all the tools you need to do so. His class is like going and watching television he is that entertaining. You will learn a lot from Professor Rice.
Dr. Rice is the best lecturer I've ever sat in class with. He's lively, entertaining, and he illuminates the texts for the students while engaging them in the process. He does, however, have a tendency to let religion come into play more than it should in a college classroom.
I LOVE Dr. Rice! I want to take him for every class I can! he's the best! So entertaining and smart!
Dr. Rice is an amazing teacher and man. Really makes class entertaining. Expects a lot from his students, but is clear from the very beginning. I cannot wait to take another class with him!
He is very nice and extremely educated in his field. His class can be very hard but he knows what he is talking about and gives great notes as well as everything you'll need to succeed in his class.
too much of the grade based on hitting what he likes as far as what he calls an arguable thesis, instead of knowledge of the material.
He is very intimidating. I had read reviews on here before taking the class, and heard he was hard, but I thought that was the lazy people saying that. No it's the people who actually try. I could not seem to ever get what he wanted in his papers, and I went to class everyday. I would never take him again.
Dr. Rice is the LEAST intimidating and MOST talented professors I ever took a course from. One must teach him/herself to fully appreciate his gift for making the literature come alive and for providing guidance through the densest of texts. If you can't learn from Dr. Rice, then you didn't try.
Dr. Rice is great! You will learn so much from him. He is not the easiest but when you leaner what he expects from papers you can ace them easily. Just pay attention, he is very clear on what he wants. Plus he is hilarious!
Dr. Rice knows his material. However, like others have stated, too much of the grade hinges on his definition of an arguable thesis and a few major grades. Didn't respond to e-mails and was very vague. His $15 dollar additional book for dailies was rarely needed. Little, if any, points toward attendance. Avoid if looking for a quality grade scale.
Dr. Rice is hilarious and he really helps students understand the material. However, he is a very tough grader. Beware, if you are not a strong writer, or you are one of those people who uses spark-notes rather than actually reading the literature!
Best Prof. ever. Rice is funny, engaging, and a genius. He does nothing but help students understand exactly what he wants. He doesnt grade on content as much as does if you used his essay structure. He demands a lot, but I have learned more than any other Eng. Class so far. Some people do not like the Take him as a Junior and you will be fine.
LOVE RICE! He's an amazing professor--so helpful and nice. He'd do anything to help a student and he has a great teaching style. It would be hard to take a class with him and not learn something in addition to falling in love with the subject. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! you're crazy if you don't take him!
First, the good news. Dr. Rice is a superb lecturer. He is always open to helping students improve. He is funny and ridiculous and makes the reading less stressful than it could be. The bad news, he is a VERY tough essay grader, but he is also willing to explain what he wants in detail. I love him!
Great lecturer. Passionate and knowledgable. Funny. High expectations re: Compare/Contrast Essays and the Research Paper. His multiple choices and quizzes are simple. There is not a lot of class participation. There is an SI to tutor. He is reasonable and understanding. He gives you plenty of heads up and a few days to consult with classmates.
Dr. Rice is absolutely the best teacher I have ever taken. His lectures are always engaging and makes the reading so much more interesting. Expects a lot from his students but clearly explains what he wants and is always very helpful. Make sure you master the arguable thesis. You're crazy if you don't take him!
Generally, I liked Rice. Still, I don't really get why students adore him so greatly. He is a very good lecturer and learned man, but I suppose I just don't see the hype surrounding him. I've had better and worse professors than him...the class was just so-so to me this semester. Also, I think he spoke about religion a little too frequently...
What was I thinking when I decided to take this class. He makes Chaucer exciting but he grades his essay tests and research papers hard. Every paper I wrote, he did not like. I thought I was going to fail the class, but I ended up with a "C." If you love Chaucer take this class, if not stay away from it. Nice prof., but hard on tests and papers.
Easily one of the best teachers I have had (and I'm not just saying that because I got an A). He understands how to explain things in a fairly clear way, yet he doesn't hold your hand either. You definitely have to work for your grade. My class was supposedly the quietest and smartest he has had. Shout out to Mr. Rice (he reads these sometimes)
Highly entertaining and so intelligent. Make a good claim on your papers and you'll be just fine.
Dr. Rice is my favorite professor, no question. He's very engaging and does everything he can to make you fall in love with the subject! He expects a lot from his students, but everything he teaches prepares you for the rest of you college classes. Take him!
Fantastic professor! Makes me love what I read.
Dr. Rice is an excellent professor. His lectures are engaging and humorous, and they clearly illuminate the literature. His tests are reasonably easy. His lectures tend to be a bit long, however, and, as a Miltonist and a pastor, his lectures over 'Paradise Lost' were both sermonesque and obsequious towards Milton.
Lots and lots of reading, but he really helps prepare you for the paper so there's no chance you don't know why to expect going into it. Tough class, but really good professor. He expects a lot.
Dr. Rice is the best professor at UCO, by far. He is brilliant and hilarious. Going to class is basically going to a comedy club. He grades hard, but he grades fair and is right about the grades he assigns. Know character details and that stuff for quizzes and make sure to start writing early in the semester. He's awesome.
I'm not sure why everyone loves Rice so much. I took him and thought he was just average. He's a nice and helpful guy, but I've had better professors at UCO. Also, he grades rather unfairly. I got As on both of my blue books and my 8-page paper (the important things), but a C on the multiple choice exam, and I got a B in the class. Doesn't compute.
Dr. Rice is really smart and funny, but this class was a huge pain. The blue book essays are serious anxiety inducers and I didn't think he prepared the class well. Don't take this class if you want to keep your GPA up. He is an unnecessarily tough grader and I think he likes giving low grades to boost his ego. Don't do it.
Professor Rice is awesome. He brightened my dull semester twice a week with his hilarious lectures. He loves making the material fun, which also makes it memorable. His tests and homework require retention, but this is easy if you pay attention in lecture!
I've taken Dr. Rice 3 times now. I had him for ENG1800, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. I chose to take his classes rather than maybe some "easier" options for History of English Language or Teaching Shakespeare, because Dr. Rice pushes you to be a better student. I recommend his classes, even if it means getting a 'B' in place of an easy 'A'.
Dr. Rice is very pompous. He thinks he is smarter than everyone and is disrespectful to students. I was very unhappy with his opinions and lectures, because of his lack of acceptance of students opposing views. I took nothing away from his class. He basically gave a scene by scene recap of each play that we read and had nothing unique to offer.
Dr. Rice was the best teacher i had this semester. He is so smart. He really makes you work for your grade and you get what you deserve. Take his class if you want to be challenged but also have a really fun time learning really cool new techniques. Taking him again next semester! He's crazy fun; Ive watched him climb a table during a story.
This course gave me a run for my money. I ended up with an A, but I had to work my butt off. There is a lot of outside reading, many quizzes, bluebook exams, and a big research paper. Passing is not impossible, but you have to put in a lot of effort.
His bluebook essays are tough but you can prepare for them at home in advance. The matching exam is very easy. He gives you more points than it appears in the syllabus, so there is some kind of a grade puff. But he is a tough professor.
I have had 3 classes with Dr. Rice. He's the best. Yes, you do have to read (for your benefit) and he does pay attention to the quality of your writing so not an "easy A" BUT he's a great teacher. I actually learned things! He is funny and tries to hold your attention. Easy to like and makes you want to do well. Plus super available to talk.
This is my second time to have Dr. Rice and I have never been disappointed! This "Bible as Literature" class is strictly non-theological. There is no argument on religion or whether God exists or not (THANK YOU!). He's brilliant and really knows his stuff and is really personal with his students. Taking him again for Chaucer!
Prior to taking Dr. Rice, I though Chaucer was the most boring thing I have ever read. He helps to bring it to life and makes English Lit and Chaucer more exciting. However, this class can be rather difficult. You have two blue books and a research paper. If you do not do well on one it is hard to get your grade up.
I like the lectures, which is good because that's the whole class. You have two bluebook essay tests and one research paper and that's pretty much it for grades. The bluebook tests are hard. Not only are they a bit difficult to even study for, he's a tough grader. He also refuses to use the internet. D2L doesn't exist for him.
Dr. Rice is always a joy to have for a professor. He makes all his lectures hilarious and you can tell that he knows a ton about the topics. I've taken him several times and I never regret it. I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Rice to everyone.
Dr. Rice was an interesting professor. He likes making references to whatever "modern" media he sees fit - and while some found it funny, I just thought it was a little annoying (not everything needs to be compared to some movie franchise from the 90s!). Tough grader, good-ish comments (some I disregarded as trash), otherwise an okay professor.
Tough grader, do the reading or you're screwed. While Dr. Rice is a nice, decent professor, I won't take a class he teaches again unless I have no other options. There are 2 bluebook essays and 1 research paper. I've taken bluebook essays before and I've never been as unprepared as I was for both of his essays after HOURS of studying for them.
Wow! this guys is just the best. Good man. Good teacher. Funny and engaging.
Provides very little instruction to help you determine how he wants you to write, he expects your classmates to provide the feedback. Very few grades and he takes himself SO seriously, so if you disagree or you try to infer a different reading of the text than him, he determines you are wrong and gives you a bad grade. Can't improve from feedback
Best Shakespeare professor I've ever had, and I've had a few. Just an inspiration if you pay attention and take NOTES. He's a good man, too. It's all about character. By far the most rigorous professor in UCO English... but without the flamboyant SJW flair of some of the creative writing teachers, and definitely without the hubris of others.
Hes the worst grader. Hes so harsh. Good luck passing
Dr. Rice thinks that any paper he doesn't agree with is trash. He forces you to find ideas for your papers that are "uphill fights" but then gives you a bad grade if he disagrees with the topic in any way and cares nothing for the points made or quality of the writing. And good luck getting any help or guidance from him. He never answers emails.
Prof. Rice was a nice guy and seems to care but his grading is a disaster. Minimal feedback is given as well as the grades are posted no where and unavailable to see. The only information available was the letter, not even percent he wrote on your paper. There was no indication of grad until he told you your final semester grade.
Online English to 1800 Here, He literally just put a video on in the zoom and expects all questions to be filtered through Office Hours on other Days/Times. He also plays the audio for the video through his speakers so you cannot even hear the video well. Let me repeat I am paying to be able to ask questions, and I have to send emails/office hours
Spring 2020. Before COVID hit I was doing well on the quizzes, getting As on his bluebook essays, a hard thing to do. I ended up getting a C because he said I cited my sources on my 10-page essay incorrectly and gave me an F. During a pandemic. I was dealing with bad depression. Wish he could've been a bit nicer. Also, his slides are from 2007.
Dr. Rice isn't terrible but there were many times that I left class frustrated. He took a long time to grade most things. He's also very very specific on what he wants from you thesis wise. I took notes from his lectures during class and made a good grade overall. The hardest assignment was the matching exam but he graded on a curve.
ENG1213. If you have taken English classes(especially AP)in the past you will be fine. SUPER easy class and daily work takes max 15 mins. We did Zoom classes, so that helped for sure. This class is super easy and you should 100% take Dr. Rice. He is very nice and understanding of everything. He is so forgiving and truly cares for his students.
It's been 20 years since I took his class, and so many of his insights still influence me today. So many of the classes I took at UCO were forgettable, but Dr. Rice helped me realize that my time in college was not just to get a skill for a job, but to be a better and more informed citizen.
Rice was always super nice, and provided his own written text book (free) for students. He grades fairly hard though so take advantage over the time he gives you to write your essays. He is very specific on what he wants. He uses his time to teach at a level that everyone can understand. I definently recommend taking him
He seems like a great person, and he's a very funny guy! However, there were many times where I would leave class wondering why I even went. He assigns a lot of busy work, and his lectures usually did not apply to the essays we were writing. His grading is very odd, and he will take off points for little things and not explain how to improve.
