Clear and concise lecturer...although final exam is tough!

One of the best teachers I've ever had.Truly amazing (and funny) lectures.
He's young and energetic. He's an excellent lecturer.
seems cold and unhelpful..he thinks too much of himself
This is a great class, he is the best prof I have ever had!
This prof changed my perception of univeristy completely! The BEST Prof Ever

Dramatic lectures keep students' attentions; great prof; can be unapproachable
great lecturer great guy you'll learn a lot
very charismatic and 'globally experienced'. always comes to class dressed sharp
Dynamic lectures; a very resourceful and energetic prof; class participation
Never fails to impress his students; this man earns his paycheque!
you'll think he's a god in 1st yr, but later realize he's self-absorbed
charasmatic and knowledgable
nice power point lectures, but sometimes talks a little fast
yes, a little ego but for a reason. He is more than excellent.
awesome! so interesting..real-world experience in what he teaches!
he is a very very good teacher. i didnt fall asleep once
Good in-class prof, BUT if you have a diff. opinion-watch out! HUGE ego!
Not easy, but definitely interesting and a great guy.
I actually went to class
Perhaps the best Political Science instructor. Demanding, though.

engaging sexy proff
the kind of guy that looks great on a scale but kind of a jerk in person.
hugh ego, though has earned it.,but damn smart. entertaining prof, makes class fun, and is very animated. Uses a laugh when needed, or to make a point.

great lectures! demanding, but fair.
Awesome lecturer, always keeps you on thd edge of the seat. Although midterm and final are quite hard and time consuming not talking about an unfair TA (Hi, Phil!). I agree, ego is there but he totally earned it!!!!
LOVED HIS LECTURES!The BEST lectures I've ever had at UBC. Learned SO much. But ya, the guy has a HUGE ego, esp. outside of class! Said hi to him on numerous occasions, and felt as acknowledged as a fruitfly.Looks sexy with a goetee though, yay playoffs!
hot, hot, hot
Awesome prof. Didn't miss a lecture. Learned so much.
Is a great prof, but knows it
Really funny and very intelligent! He is a fair marker but you've got to earn it!
Such a fantastic lecturer! I never fell asleep in his class. A dynamic speaker and very knowledgable. But he works u to the ground, and he has a big ego, but totally deserves the attention.
same jokes every class year after year. he is smart and well organized, appears to like teaching. but i don't like his big ego.
Best prof EVER! 200 person class and he learns peoples' NAMES! Is soo entertaining, it's like going to the theatre not a lecture. Invites questions, super helpful & love his class to death!
He's good, but I think some people overstate his greatness.
Great prof, my best UBC prof this year. Ego? Most definitely. Curiosity about the hand? Very high.
excellent lecturer. keeps you engaged and interested in the material, although there is a bit too much material at times...
Fantastic lecturer. Answers student questions thoughtfully. One must keep up with the readings and attend all lectures to do well on tests. Great course!
Communicates very well in class, yet is unapproachable and an elitist.

Awesome class.
Overrated? Yes. Egotistical/Elitist? Yes. Helpful? Hellz No. Has no time for you. Interesting/Funny/Knowledgeable? Most definetely. Hard marker? Yes. Makes you more interested in politics? Most assuredly. Talks about his hand?
Very charismatic;great lectures. He's not as egotisticial as many people make him out to be. Demanding, but empathetic towards students too. He's certainly not as cold-hearted as many people make him out to be. He's very helpful via email and office hours.
great lecturer
Highly overrated! I rearranged my schedule to take his class and I regret it everyday. Sure, he is a great lecturer, but that's about it. His exams are insane, he's an extremely hard marker, extremely arrogant and unable to meet outside of office hours
Allen Sens is the best instructor when it comes to teaching ability and style. He's articulate, knowledgable, and reasonably helpful. That said, I tend to agree with others who deem Sens overrated. He seems full of himself and comes across as a snob.
I LOVE ALLEN SENS
Interesting and Entertaining. Funny. He seems like a nice guy and once I sat next to him on the bus. He was busy last year b/c he was the head of IR but I don't think he is anymore so maybe he has more time.

Actually in Price's class, but he had Sens fill in for him several times. Sens had so much passion the material it was great. He was a little disorganized and was really biased. Listened to students. Price is easier to follow and isnt as biased.
Great lecturer. Very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Hard marker. Study the textbook real well and you'll be fine for the tests. He didn't have time for when I took this course but as someone else mentioned he used to be the head for IR.
He is the reason I am in Political Science. I love his teaching style - very interactive. He gets back to me promptly anytime I have a question (be it via email or phone), and while he is not an easy grader, he makes you WANT to learn.
he is very passionate and that can inspire passion in his students. His class is practically the same every year (right down to the jokes) so if you can get your hands on some old notes it makes great study material
Excellent prof. Clear and knowledgeable
amazingly well taught, just gotta be willing to work
should run for the Conservative Party of Canada. Would fit in well with George Bush's war on terrorism.
Excellent Prof. Extremely knowledgeable regarding his subject matter, shown by the quality of his answers when asked ??? by students. Makes you want to learn not just for grades but to actually apply it in the real world. Uses variety of inter
He's a good instructor, but his credibility was shot when he predicted on TV that Canada had no choice but to say "yes" to the Iraq war. Well, we stayed out of Bush's adventure, and we were right to.
He's lot's of fun.
Gave highly interesting lectures in an easy to follow manner. Lectures enjoyable. Straightforward midterm. Absolutely recommended - a great course taught by a smart prof!
He's known as 'Hollywood Sens'. He lives up to his name b/c he's one of the most engaging poli sci profs at UBC. Very smart and makes his course fun and interesting to learn. Not the easiest marker and sometimes seem intimidating to approach. Again, he's hollywood sens.
Dr. Sens teaches Poli 260 very well by making his lectures engaging, interesting, and absolutely dynamic. He made me more interested in global politics, not just on an academic level, but also on a 'real world' level too. I definitely recommend him!
Probably the most articulate and engaging prof I've ever had (in my two years.) His lectures were packed into the stairs for most classes. My only criticism is that the difficulty of his exams could be overwhelming: the midterm was 4(!!!) essays in 50 minutes, the final was 6 in 3 hours.
Very clear and engaging lectures. Best lecturer I've had in any department. Work load was manageable. Final exam worth 40% of mark --- which was intimidating. But as long as you attended regularly and kept up with reading it was a fair exam. Highly recommended.
Dr. Sens is an amazing lecturer... Going to class was never hard because he was so incredably engaging... His exams are pretty straight forward but to do well provide real world examples in your essay answers
Dr. Sens is an AMAZING professor. I find myself applying his lectures and methods of analysis to present international issues. His course was difficult but excellent and while asking a lot of his students, he encourages the independent intelligent thought of those in his class. I highly reccomend i
He's a great lecturer and instructor. He's not the most approachable guy in the world, but it doesn't really matter because he is that good. His exams are not easy, but they aren't that difficult either - just make sure to READ all the readings.
Overrated. Why does everybody thinks he's so great? Because he acts? He's teaching PoliSci, not theatre! He's also insecure and arrogant. He doesn't care about his students, but is more interested in selling textbooks and has his eyes on bigger things (eg. Head of Poli Sci Dept or Pres of UBC)
Overrated prof. Teach me, don't put on a show. Not helpful to students outside of class.

Thinks highly of himself.
Sens is a great lecturer who has developed excellent ways to get difficult concepts across in a simple and straightforward manner. tests are not easy but not too hard. highly recommended.

Sens is by far one of the best profs at UBC. He is not underrated. He is really funny and presents the material clearly. I looked forward to attending lectures (weird eh?) - The class is hard, but its worth it.
He gives interesting lectures but sometimes I think he's trying to hard to put on a show. His class is worth taking, though. His tests are bit tough 'cause they require you to know a lot of small details. Also, he lets his own political bias through too much.
he is what he is. entertaining yes. greatest thing at UBC, no. lots of keeners and teachers pets in the class. one good thing is he keeps the "anti-american" pet project of most students and profs @ UBC to a mininmum. take the class cause its good, but don't think it will change your life.
He's a good prof, but you're not going to have an out of body experience or anything. The class if full of stupid people who think they know stuff and constantly put their hands up because he takes names of those who participate. Good class, yes, best class or prof at UBC, not by a long shot.
He's clear and tries to make an effort to keep people interested and there's nothing wrong with that. my views were totally opposite to his and i still got an extremely high mark. know your stuff and be prepared to show him and you'll do fine.

Do not expect any help from him. He is very arrogant, so you'll be expected to think exactly like he does and agree with everything he says, plus put up with him constantly inflating his ego by talking about giving speeches at NATO conferences and so on. He knows his stuff but can be condescending.
after reading the other comments.. I have to say that I totally agree on the fact that he is extremely arrogant! (emphasis on extremely) I did very well in his class, but his attitude turned me off. Definitely not worth the hype taking his class.
cocky ****
this is an over-rated class...
Awesome Prof, definitely lived up to the expectations. He's really fun and keeps the students on the edge of their seats. However, he's a tough marker, and has high standards! Is it just me , or does he look like John Travolta?
A very decent guy. Honestly, I feel the reason why so many people feel compelled to critize him and call him egotistical is because he is such a popular professor in the department. His charisma and flair for presentation should not be misconstrued as arrogance. He's a good prof - not the best in the world - but his classes are truly enjoyable :)
The man is not arrogant, he is intelligent. He is also regarded higly by students because he enjoys & uses an array of teaching techniques to keep you interested: video, anecdote, groupwork, photographs, and discussion, along with energetic and pragmatic lectures. He also clearly explains his expectations on papers: listen to them and follow them.

can someone pls tell me WHY anyone would like this proff????? his classes may be entertaining but once you get to know him on a personal level you'll understand why everyone says he arrogant. he doesn't give a damn about his students!!!
He is not an 'excellent' professor as previous comments claim. Sens hasn't written more than 2 pieces in the last 5 years; that's disgusting for any descent scholar. Look how much Price and Cameron have written, thats what makes the difference between a PROFESSOR and a mediocre lecturer. His teaching techniques can only impress a simpleton like u.
Previous poster, Allen Sens is what's called a senior instructor. He is the head of the IR Program and teaches IR courses in Political Science and History: those are his primary responsibilities. He wasn't hired to do research; he was hired because he's an outstanding teacher. That he does any research at all is impressive given his teaching load.

Sens is a fantastic professor. He's co-authored a great introductory textbook and is fantastic at engaging his class and challenging their thinnking. --> who cares if he's arrogant? I'm not looking for a friend in a professor, or a prolific author... I want someone that knows what the f** they're talking about -- dude below me should grow up!
A very enjoyable instructor! Class is awesome too.

the material and the prof were both engaging. encouraged a lot of discussion in class, i enjoyed the interactive atmoshphere. However, did not allow hardly enough time for the midterm. Also, read the textbook (which he wrote), not just his lectures, b/c his exams focus on both. Would highly recommend ppl to take his class, very entertaining.
fabulous prof for an intoductory class. his teaching style is great for a lecture style course as he is able to get 200+ students actively interested. Thats not easy!!
There's not much that I can add to what has already been said. This was definitely my favorite class thus far at university. I looked forward to every single lecture.
Loved this course! Dr. Sens is a fabulous teacher who uses various teaching techniques (video's, diagrams, stats, etc). This is a demanding course and requires lots of work, but Dr. Sens really generates interest in the course. Take this course!
By far the best professor I have encountered.
learn more than wikipedia, and in less time
Sens sells the sizzle, not the steak. His course is very introductory and simplistic; his obvious skills as a lecturer notwithstanding.
A very engaging lecturer, and his random photos kept me interested when the material wasn't my cup of tea. It's hard to completely BS your way through this politics course - he places a big emphasis on knowledge of arguments from the 900+ page course reader (I count 916, not sure). Great help in office hours.
Great class - would definately recommend - his theatrical style can be straining and doesn't handle questions so well b/c of this - yet he knows his material, and the course content was packed full of knowledge, yet still entertaining.
Allen Sens is an excellent instructor. He is a senior instructor, so he was hired for his teaching excellence and strong administrative skills. He is indeed a wonderful lecturer and a dedicated undergraduate advisor. He's a delight to have as an instructor.
and 370. Many people agree, Sens is great, he is fun and he spoonfeeds you a story that seems to explain politics as if it was a prime time TV drama. But criticism is important too: it's not all as simple as Sens makes it. he does have difficulties with hard questions. he is an actor and enjoys it; therefore arrogant to a degree. Nonetheless, GREAT
Sens is very experienced and knowledgeable. I attended 100% of his lectures because they were important, informative AND entertaining. His class was never boring. The first midterm was very time compressed but there were lots of freedom on the essay. Excellent Prof.
a fantastic public speaker! his lectures fly by. PLUS he's cute :)
Sens' lectures are well-structured, interesting, informative, and fun. He takes particular care to use contemporary case studies, and even manages to stimulate good discussions in a 250 person lecture. Overall, one of the best profs I've ever had.
Really great prof. Takes the time to learn peoples names in a lecture of 250. Great mix of interesting lectures and applying models to current events. Take a course with him! Any course! Not easy, but really worth it.
Amazing prof, and a great, kind guy. His lectures are always interesting, organized and informative. He cares about his job and about his students. Take one of his classes! You will be surprised at how much you can learn. He explains thing in a comprehensive but engaging way.
One of best professors at UBC! I truly enjoyed his lectures because of his passionate and engaging teaching style. What you learn from this course is more than you can imagine! Marks are fair and feedbacks are wonderful.
Great class for an intro to CC and GMO's both profs are interesting and make the subject matter hit close to home. I highly encourage you to take this class if you have the chance!
One of the best prof's at UBC!
He was VERY helpful during office hours, more helpful than any other prof I've ever seen during office hours. Midterm marking seemed arbitrary and unfair. He's very conceited during lectures, he feels the need to act and be melodramatic. I got 82.
Definitely one of the best, most knowledgeable and enjoyable professors in UBC.
What else can I write? Sens is a stud professor. He is an intelligent man with an effective public speaking ability. He cracks witty comments as well. The course is very dense, though, and it requires tons of hard work in order to achieve a 76+. Sens is a top-3 prof in UBC for sure.
Genuinely Top Rate Professor. So clear and interesting during lectures that the textbook is boring in comparison, although the material is pretty much the same. Marking is fair, 1 midterm, 1 research paper, avg 15pg(tut) + 30pg(txtbook/chapter) Take the course! You won't regret it! This professor someone you wont want to miss :D
Like everyone says, he's THE best. This was my first poli class ever. I had no background in it and ended up enjoying very much. He is a very helpful person but I found exams to be a bit hard. Big on vocab. Talk to your TA before submitting that 14+pg research paper.
You have to take his class. thats all there is to say
His class is AWESOME! Not super easy but extremely fair! It was a joy to go to class. His lectures were more like stories and kept you captivated. Definitely my favorite prof in my entire university career.
Take this course if you have the chance, it was amazing! I loved both profs. Sens was an especially riveting speaker- he really peaked my interest on a lot of the topics we discussed. The group work was also fun and the exam was straightforward. UBC should have more courses (and profs) like this.
there is a reason he won a teaching award..a genuine good guy and great prof
There's not really much I can say that hasn't already been said... he's a great prof and any poli sci major who doesn't take a class with him is really missing out. Even if you're not planning to major in poli sci, I still definitely recommend him... it's not an easy A, but his expectations are very reasonable. Learned so much since September!
and 374. If Sens is not the best poli sci prof at UBC he is hands down in the top 3. Don't believe people who say he is arrogant. Since when is confidence the same thing as arrogance? Would you prefer he mumble incoherently and sheepishly stare at his feet? Find something reasonable to complain about. Both of these classes were great. Take one.
Not an overly difficult class - show up to class, take notes, and do the readings (which are quite minimal) and you will get at least a B+. I know this has been said a billion times already, but he is phenomenal. Great lecturer, and the 2nd best prof in poli sci (Tiberghien is #1). You owe it to yourself to take a class with him.
An incredible professor. Captivating, motivating and energetic. Even if you are not an IR or poli sci student, I highly recommend this class. Allen Sens is fantastic.
professor sens is by far the best prof i've ever had at ubc! i never would have thought that i would like political science, but after taking his class i'm majoring in IR! he is a truly inspirational teacher and knows his stuff inside and out. i enjoyed every minute of his class, even the econ part! make sure you go to lecture and read the textbook
It's hard to get a stellar grade with Sens but he is an amazing professor. If you take his class I guarantee that you will learn a lot!
His poli260 course is the hardest one, but by far the most rewarding. Poli260 is the weed out course for the International Relations program, and Dr. Sens is the International Relations program's chair- so his course is DIFFICULT. However, like everyone says, if you're willing to work he is the Prof you want for this course.
After all the great stuff I've heard, I have to say I'm very disappointed(and I got an A-). Great lecturer but cold in office hours and TA was much more helpful. Told a couple of hard-working students I know that maybe they're not smart enough to bring up their grade rather than giving advice on how to do so. I'm shocked and won't return.Shame on U
great prof, funny, clear, alot of material, tough midterms and finals, throws a couple of curve balls, but overall great prof and extremely enlightening class.
A very charismatic, articulate public speaker. He emphasizes on real world skills and expects a high standard from his students int his 300 level class. He has a solid background experience in IR and often ties this into his lectures. Would definitely take him again!
I have had Sens for three courses (Cnd Foreign Policy, Intro to Global Politics, Security). I go out of my way to take courses taught by him - he's by far my favorite UBC prof. Very interesting, charismatic, funny and articulate. He can make even the most dull points interesting. Exams and papers are reasonable, not bad if you study.
A very good professor. I think it is almost inconceivable that a student could get bored during a lecture. Tough but fair.
By far one of my favourite profs to date. Tough, but fair, and with lectures that will blow you away.
Took his class about the UN last year. It was easily one of the most interesting classes I have taken @ UBC, with one of the best profs. Sens is a great speaker, a fair marker, and extremely helpful. I was disappointed when I wasn't able to be in another one of his classes because of a schedule conflict.
An excellent lecturer, however there is simply too much material to study for the final exam and also the policy paper is weighed too highly @ 60%. Marking also seemed arbitrary - although he is an excellent lecturer - he is overrated, there are other profs in POLI science that are equally as good if not better. Would not take another course with him in the future, it's safe to say that I am not in his fan-club.
Allen Sens used to be my favourite Political Science prof at UBC but after taking POLI 363 with him, I feel differently. He was rather busy with other matters while teaching this course and was, therefore, less available to his students. He also failed to integrate ANY of the MANY readings we had to do for the class into his lectures and then told
Sens is overrated. Lectures are overly dramatic and dated so come off as contrived rather than exciting. Perhaps he was better in the past(?) Currently, don't believe the hype. If you find yourself in ASIC 200 - tow the line and feign interest. I am disappointed to be stuck in his class but need the arts credits *sigh*
Prof is pretentious and annoying. Not a fan of this man.Avoid if possible it's better to get your science creds elsewhere.Really. Dave, rocks but Allen, bah!
Crystal clear and helpful prof. Best class i took at UBC.
What's with the difficult marking? His comments don't help. Nice prof but maybe overrated.
i also think hes overrated. certainly has his favourites. never seems to be truly interested in what he's doing- whether it be lecturing or talking one on one. seems uptight. i have had far better poli lecturers. and yes, im an arts student.
He is the ONE!
he is the most entertaing prof I have ever had! sometimes he walked around the front of the lecture hall as if hes a comedian. I learned a lot but not about current global politics. More about how its looked at and came to be. mark is based on 40% essay, 40% final and 10% essay outline and 10% tutorial. recomended but not an easy A.
Excellent professor, easily one of the best profs at UBC. Lectures are entertaining, interesting, fun, and very useful all at the same time. He is not a hard marker, like some have claimed. Everyone gets the mark they deserve. If you like IR you will do very well
Allen is an excellent prof, one of the best profs I have had at UBC. Very interesting lectures, and if you work hard, you will definetly get a good trade.
An awesome prof. Even if you don't love Peacekeeping (which is what this course was about), he's just awesome. I had him for 260 as well and he's the best Poli prof out there. Grading is thorough, but I'd say it's fair, some readings at the beginning; practical, case based, exams which were actually fun (ish) to write.
You can tell he loves this topic. Such an approachable person, and genuinely wants to help you out. Big group assignment, 2 midterms, term paper, and a final exam. Easy-ish marker, but a lot of deadlines. You need to go to class.
If you ever get a chance to take one of his classes I highly recommend it. He will make you want to attend class with his fascinating lectures and jokes. It is a lot of work and he doesn't usually give above 90, but it's not difficult to do well.
Perfection.
He looks exactly like Louis Litt. He also had the most fascinating stories to share with the class and he lectured in a way that made the course material interesting to learn about and easy to understand. It was really littastic.
This is my fourth class that I have taken with this professor and he is one of, if not the best professors in the department. He is passionate about the topics but also about his students. He is funny and engaging. Has amazing stories to tell, if you are a POLI major/minor you HAVE to take one of his classes. Just amazing.
Sens is by far the best professor at UBC. He is everything you want to have in a prof, approachable, funny, interesting,crystal-clear and does his best to know your name(even in a class of 300 people). If you have the opportunity TAKE HIS COURSE.
Best lecturer around. Best shirt collection around. Discussion groups didn't seem to really mesh with class material. Assignments were fair.
Possibly the best prof I've ever had. Is insanely passionate about what he's teaching and his students. Very knowledgeable, hilarious, awesome shirts. Please take his class if you get a chance.
Best prof I've had: APSC/POLI 377 was the most enjoyable and informative class I have taken at UBC. It's a bit out of my shell - it's pretty far off from my usual engineering courses - but it was amazingly well put together and well taught. This is the perfect reverse-classroom course: excellent videos and prep, and well designed in class activites
Best course at UBC. I went in with little interest (mandatory Impact of Tech on Society elective), but it turned out to be my favourite class, largely due to the instructors. Sens has a real charisma in his lectures, and uses a flipped model, so you'll be doing the bulk of the lectures online and activities in class.
Great prof, his lectures are very interesting and he makes them funny too. There's lots of resources he posts online including instructional videos which are good for visual learners like me!
Sens is a fun and entertaining lecturer. I found that his lectures seemed to lacked depth, often making ambiguous thematic statements rather than analysing different perspectives. That being said, he's fairly clear with expectations, and is worth taking a class with overall.
He is one of few professors at UBC that actually cares about his students! He is an extremely fair marker, and if you watch his videos before the exam, you will do very well! He's quirky, but makes dry topics interesting! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Amazing prof. I'm a visual learner and he used a lot of diagrams to explain things! Brilliant prof, take his class, highly recommended!
Guaranteed among the top 10 best professors @ UBC. Wild character, hilarious jokes, and pleasant to just be around. The man is incredibly intelligent and witty. You will want to go to lecture- for once. Not just a class but an experience. #10/10wouldwatchSenswearcolourfulshirtsagain
Hands down one of the best professors in the Poli Sci department at UBC. If anyone was looking for some UN related courses, take this one and NOT POLI 364. You can thank me later.
When he describes the format of assessment and expectations, assume he's lying. The surprise twists he throws in are compensated for by incredible lectures and hilarious subject material.
Dr. Sens is a genuinely kind human being who is definitely more professor than academic (not to say that he isn't brilliant, he just clearly does the job to teach). The class has a ton of short assignments which aren't hard, but are designed to chip away at the high average. You can get an A, but even if you're brilliant he's force you below 90.
Every lecture is like a TED Talk. Lectures are entertaining and Dr. Sens has a wealth of global politics knowledge! On another note, had a horrendous TA and many students complained about marking discrepancies. Seemed like the teaching team was deflating marks to varying degrees in order to keep the course average in the B-range.
He's an entertaining lecturer for sure but he definitely deflates the class average and will force everyone below a 90. That being said, the assignments themselves aren't hard. There are a lot of small assignments. The first midterm can be extremely confusing and doesn't make the grading criteria clear.
His top priority during a global pandemic seemed to be deflating grades/class average. Nice guy though otherwise.
Dr. Sens is an exemplary lecturer who knows how to engage the class. There were a lot of small assignments, but it was manageable. TONS of reading involved, and I found the majority of them to be dry and uninteresting. He's a tough grader, so be sure to get a hang of his unique exam style. This class has changed how I view a lot of things.
Do NOT take HIST 425 with Sens if you like history. Dr. Sens is a nice person and a committed prof. However, the class is topical and bland, and never ventures past a surface level understanding of anything. Your time is wasted on common-sense humanitarian law projects and doing dumb scenario questions that have NOTHING to do with history. Avoid.
Phenomenal lecturer! Online format meant lectures needed to be watched prior to every class. Group project heavy for this particular class. Assignments are simple and short. However, as many have mentioned, Sens tends to deflate grades and it is hard to get anything over 85%.
Really interesting class on the social sciences and humanities side of COVID-19 and climate change. He explained information succinctly and is clearly knowledgeable on both topics. A list of testable material is given at the beginning of the term which makes it easy to study for the final exam.
Lectures were built like podcasts and there were no tests based on them at all. The lack of pressure makes it enjoyable to learn and he comes in every class with enthusiasm to teach. Great introductory course to international relations as he explained everything super clearly.
One of the best poli-sci professors at UBC. Engaging lecturer who makes the courses he teaches fun and interesting. Knowledgeable in International Relations and always available during office hours. Will also write recommendations if you take the time to get to know him. Also met him at the hobby store once. Cool dude.
Dr. Sens was a remarkably caring prof who helped me not only in class, but also in broadening my horizons with volunteer opportunities! He's accessible by email and makes time to accommodate all students with their needs. Grading is a bit unorthodox, but clear - he always makes his expectations (admittedly high) available.
Very entertaining and engaging professor. Would recommend taking a POLI class with doctor Sens.
Good professor and interesting course. The materials are well presented and not much reading is required to do well. Personally I found the professor to favour "americanism" and portray it as the best thing on earth, but it did not affect anyhting in the class. Nice talks and opportunities to participate and voice your opinion
Great POLI professor - lectures were enjoyable and entertaining, the materials were well-covered and well-organized. Posted slides & recorded lectures. Used humor to make it easy for students to understand difficult concepts. Decent workload, about 1 reflection assignment per week, 2 papers for the entire course, and a rather tough final exam.
As an engineering student taking this class, what a breath of fresh air, Allen Sens is incredibly entertaining and presents the lectures with energy. The quizzes in almost every class keep you prepared, yet there isn't a heavy mark to them, so if you don't do great on one, that's okay. Group project and individual project marking was fair.
He does the lecture like a standup comedy routine. You will leave every lecture thinking the world is falling apart, but they are highly informative and you can tell it is his passion. Definitely recommend, though the reading is intense if you do it, and the papers can be rigorous. Only one professor draws a perfect circle on the first day.
Amazing lecturer who keeps students engaged and gets them interested in IR. Well-balanced weighting between papers and other weekly assignments, tutorial participation, and of course, the final exam. The exam did have some very specific detail-based questions which were tedious since the textbook was to be read outside class time.
I highly recommend Dr. Sens! His lectures are amazingly funny and helps you to engage with the course materials. His lectures are recorded. There are two research papers where if you follow the rubric, you can get a high mark. The final exam is cumulative. You are responsible for reading the textbook, lecture notes, and watching provided videos.
Prof Sens is a very knowledgeable teacher and very skilled orator - going to his lectures is like going to a TED talk! He knows a lot about his subject and is willing to answer questions. Fair exams.
Amazing class and prof! Every lecture was so fun to attend. As long as you write thoughtful papers and listen in class you'll be fine.
Great lecturer! Dr. Sens is accessible outside of class and is super accommodating. He's one of the best POLI profs I've had at UBC and I'd take another course with him.
Absolutely amazing course! Dr Sens is one of the best lecturers I've encountered at UBC, and I look forward to his classes every week. There was a lot of reading and two research papers worth 25% each, but if you follow his instructions and consult with your TAs often, you'll do really well.
My fav prof at UBC. Lectures are awesome and entertaining! He has really opened my eyes up to the world of IR, which can be intimidating at first, and makes it accessible and easy for everyone. You can tell he genuinely wants all his students to succeed which is super nice. Take his class, your undergrad career will be incomplete without doing so.
Allen is probably one of the best profs I've had. In general the poli sci and IR department are very good with profs. His lectures are quite engaging and takes time to remember student's by their names. Most of the grading is done by TAs and I found it easy to get an A+. I will definitely be taking his 300 level courses.
An incredible prof, highly recommend to everyone. Made each and every lecture extremely interesting, you can tell he is passionate about the topics! Very reasonable workload, keep up with readings and attend lecture and you will do well. Definitely will be taking as many of his classes as possible in the future!
AMAZING lectures. He's hilarious and listening to lectures is not a chore. Well-balanced course and make sure to genuinely read the textbook because there are very specific questions from the textbook on the exam. I really enjoyed writing essays in this class because you can choose which topic out of a list. I recommend doing the earlier essays.
Super funny guy who is really chill and means well. His lectures are pretty informative and useful for exam and paper preparation. Take written notes if you wanna succeed in his class. I would recommend 10/10.
Incredible lecturer who made me take more poli classes just because he was teaching them. He makes everything sound so epic and he's never boring. He lays out exactly how to structure your essays which is helpful, and has mandatory supplementary videos. Lays a solid foundation for future poli specializing, in theory or security. Highly recommend!!
Best POLI prof I've had and by far the best lectures I've attended at UBC. Dr Sens is an amazing lecturer, and POLI 260 is a top tier class. He's funny, makes everything he talks about fascinating, and is overall a really nice guy. Grading is fair (as long as you get a good TA) and assignments are always interesting to work on. The final was tough.
Sens was engaging, never boring, and made the material easily digestible. Course readings were easy and assignments were simple. He made the class easy to excel in and gave great structure for papers and assignments. He was hilarious, unbiased, and encouraged self-thought. Encouraged me to further pursue IR in the future!
The 'blended' format of the course made this my favourite course this term! The learning objectives are the most straightforward ones I have come across so far and extremely useful when studying for exams. The interactive groupwork element was also a fun way to meet others in the class. Prof is extremely understanding and accommodating!
Best lecturer that I've had. Knowledgeable on various aspects of global politics. Two papers worth 25% each, and he gives a clear outline to follow. Final exam is cumulative, so stay on top of the readings. There are very specific questions, but the most significant part was the essay portion. Lectures are recorded, and tutorials are graded.
Prof. Sens really excels at lecturing. The course covers a lot of things, but he's able to explain topics in a very comprehensive and straightforward manner. The final is a little bit of work in that it's dense with info, but beyond that all other assessments were fair. We did have homework due weekly, so take note if that isn't your thing.
Such a great prof. If you ever want entertaining and memorable lectures please attend Dr. Sens' classes. Always available to answer questions and answer them in depth. Applies content to the real world. Make sure to read the textbook carefully because there are some questions on the final that you will not be able to answer if you have not.
Took 260 with him last year and came back for 374. He's an amazing prof and has a true depth of knowledge in a lot of areas. His lectures are straightforward, he knows how to teach, and he makes the classroom an inviting space. Hope I can take more courses with him, he's one of the best poli sci profs UBC has.
While he is a good lecturer, his expectations for assignments and essays are not clear even with the films rubrics he provides. Readings and tests are overly technical, with one of the questions on the test literally reading, "what did the author refer to when he said it is the most pressing challenge in peacekeeping?" Uhm, no.
Allen has some of the best lectures out there. He's super funny and makes the course content very understandable. Your grade is based on 2 papers, some tutorial assignments, and the final. Basically, grades are determined by your TA, so good luck. The final is also weirdly specific, and you do need to actually read the textbook. Great class overall
While his lectures are good, marking criteria for the papers are vague and grading is impossibly slow. Lots of readings for a 200 level class. The final tests on extremely specific info and things that were not covered in lectures but are in the textbook. Final is cumulative, make sure to stay on top of the readings every week.
Dr. Sens is fantastic. I took POLI 260 (introduction to global politics) with him and it was great. Great lecturer and nice guy. The course had lots of readings, assignments, and papers though.
Absolute king. Took 260 with him, he's super engaging and the course was well taught. You're graded on 2 papers, weekly tutorial assignments, and a final. Studying minor course content/details/facts was important for the final (MC section). Your TA can make or break your grade though. Highly recommend.
Professor Sens is an engaging lecturer who makes the course content really interesting. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of the readings and assignments. I found Unstuck study helpful for exam prep too. Highly recommend this class!
Sens makes the lectures very digestable, and fun to attend. You can tell he is super passionate about international relations. Aside from this, this course has a very heavy load of readings, he assigns almost the entire textbook for the semester. You have to stay on top of readings as there is very specific details from the textbook on assessments.
Dr Sens is passionate, intelligent, and very funny. His lectures made the extensive content easy to understand. You end up reading pretty much an entire textbook for this course which he tests on but this was the only bad part of the course. Weekly assignments instead of a term essay, 3 non-cumulative exams. Def recommend taking a class with him.
Incredible lecturer. Very well-informed, great at introducing the material, very engaging. Substantial amount of reading, but doable if you keep up with the reading guide he recommends. Tests are hard but fair. Accessible outside of class, and truly cares about your success, but if you need help you need to ask for it. Favourite professor at UBC!
Sens is an awesome lecturer, and very knowledgeable. He also engages well with his students; for example, he postponed a lesson to talk about the recent US election and answer students' questions. Readings are heavy but v important for exams; be ready to re-read! But on the plus side, all 3 exams are non-cumulative.
Professor Sens is probably the best lecturer in the POLI/IR dep at UBC. He is so passionate about the topics he teaches and his students learning. His syllabus is really in depth and a great resource. I will say the grading and rubric implementation really depends on the TA. Mine was a bit on and off with what she wanted to see.
This is the best class I've ever taken at UBC. It's a flipped classroom, so you have to take notes before class then do in-class quizzes and assignments. You're also stuck with the same group all year, so pray you like them. The in-class projects are super fun, the course content is interesting, and if you take detailed notes the tests are easy.
Best prof to take Poli 260 with. Lectures were recorded. Grades matter on your TA, all assignments and participation grades are more influenced by your performance in the discussion lab. Lecture is chill, but read the assigned book chapters.
Dr. Sens is a gem! Funny and straight to the point. Lectures are recorded and concise. The textbook is skimable. Weekly HWs are easy, but grading entirely depends on your TA. If he says something "will likely show up on the exam", then it WILL. He grades the essay section of exams VERY specifically. Hit the learning objectives and you're good!
Dr. Sens is friendly and easy to understand. This class however, is extremely reading-heavy with several textbook chapters and weekly assignments. This class covers a lot of content, but Sens records lectures, so it is easy to follow. Exams had weirdly specific things like asking for exact numbers and stats, which he mentions in class.
Best professor ever! Lots of reading and weekly assignments can be a bit tedious (no final paper though!) but his lectures are so exciting and engaging. Always looked forward to going to his class. Very accessible outside of class too; office hours were excellent and Dr. Sens is super approachable and friendly.
THE GOAT POLI SCI PROF. Lectures were excellent and felt like a TED talk everytime, I was always looking forward to going to class. Graded by 6 small 1 page briefs, tutorial, 2 midterms and a final that are non cumulative. Memorize every random number he mentions in lecture (especially in the security and climate change units) as they are tested!
the best UBC poli sci professor of all time
