He is a great teacher, even though some of the books sucked. He is just good.

Awesome teacher, easy to work with and a very energetic knowledgable teacher. Works with you and has fair enough rules and is there help you out through life more so than english itself.
Awsome!
Swords was awesome. We read great books and just talked about them all semester. The hardest part were the tests. They were difficult, but as long as you put forth an effort and show him that you are interested, you will do fine.
He is such a great teacher! I would suggest him to anyone...really helpful and cares for his students.
Great Teacher!

Best English Prof ever!! i actually looked forward to going to his class and i hate english. take him.
Super teacher, really cares about his classes. Very helpful and the class is just really interesting. There is alot of reading for his class so if you're a slow reader it's a little hard, but the extent of work for the class is discussions. Speak up intelligently and you'll do fine. TAKE HIM!
If you are thinking about taking this instructor, do it. He was an outstanding teacher, and used many different ways of teaching to keep the class interesting. He was willing to help in any way possible, and is out for the students and not for himself.
Mr. Swords is a great guy and extremely cares about his students, he does make you participate A LOT, but he's a great teacher.
Mr. Swords is my favorite teacher at Clemson! I am taking him for the third time as a sophomore because he is great. He is so interesting and really takes an interest in his students and is very encouraging. The key to success in his class is participation.
Great teacher! Lots of reading and tons of class participation are required, but, he makes it fun and he's just an all around great guy!
this class is very frustrating! we didn't receive paper topics until after we read our book sources, frequent unannounced absences, no grades returned 3/4 of the way through the semester (and still counting!!!), frequently changed syllabus and assignments and the changes weren't always clear.
He is a kick *** teacher. This semester he has had some family problems so we have had a changing schedule but he cares so much about his students and is so so so helpful. He also makes class enjoyable and has us read some great books. TAKE HIM if you get the chance. I'm taking him again next sem
Don't take him if you hate class participation. He knew everyone's name by the end of the first class....I dropped as soon as I got to a computer.
he does no teaching for this class, i have never had a prof who didn't teach. Instead you get to listen to the other students run their mouth for an hour :( . This is not a literature class, this isn't even a class its listening to what other people think, which i have NO interest in what so ever.
This class is very fun, though it'll challenge you more than many others. Be ready for a comprehensive final.
Swords is the best teacher I have had at Clemson, I recommend him to everyone. He doesn’t just ramble on about what we are "suppose to think" instead he guides class discussions. This allows for stimulation beyond your normal classes, quizzes are the main part of your grade so just do the readings.
Absolutely fantastic teacher. All his information is concise. Quick to reply to email or make time available to you in his office. The course is enriching in both materials covered and class discussions. This course really isn't too difficult, provided YOU DO YOUR DAMN WORK.
Great English Teacher! Make sure you say something the first couple of days or you never get asked about anything, so the classes are pretty dominated by just a couple people. If you need grades, don't bother, because you won't get anything back. If a literature course is required, take this one!
AMAZING TEACHER! Mr. Swords is the best teacher that I have ever had a Clemson. Students "run" class and he adds to conversations often. There are no tests, one paper, the final exam, and really easy reading quizes every other class day (however are easy and if you read you should have no problem)
Everyone raves about Mr Swords, they're mistaken. It is the last day of classes and we still have no idea about our GRADES. Whether or not he's a great guy, he's promised our grades back numerous times and broken this covenant. We do our homework, he should do his.
This class consists of excuses and apologies by Mr. Swords for not coming to class prepared, for absences (both announced and unannounced), for not having our grades, for cancelling office hours the week before our major paper is due, and for offending students during class discussion.
CAUTION: read Mr Swords positive reviews with skepticism. After reading three poor ratings, he sent an email to both his 209 sections addressing the comments. I'm sure he was also going for the pity factor from his loyal followers because they responded with great enthusisasm.
Mr. Swords is a fantastic teacher. Don't pay any attention to negative ratings...take him! He is definitely understanding and a very intelligent man. Class is engaging and never boring. Whoever rates negatively obviously doesn't have a clue of what a good teacher is...

i loved this class. the discussions are sometimes focused on the same people but are very entertaining/thoughtful.we did not get our grades until later but if you do the work you basically know your grade already and lots of extra credit to help your grade. if youre closeminded you wont like him.
He really cares about his students. If you don't mind reading, then you will get an A no problem. There are quizes everyday on the material you read, but it isn't hard. The final is long, but not hard. If you take 209, take it with him!! It is very interesting.
students rave about their other 209 teachers.take someone else & have a great class & get feedback.this is a place that should be uncensored by profs so that future-takes of a prof can be forewarned.it's anonymous so that students can criticize a teacher w/o a lash-back on subjectively graded work
He is the best English teacher I have ever had. Truly cares about his students. Read the books and you will do fine.
read his responses to the negative ratings and see if this is the type of person you want to be "taught" by. i pay too much for my education to have teachers that don't provide feedback and miss class.
maybe swords is the right teacher for some people, but he wasn't for me. to me he was unmotivated and uncaring -- others can disagree. I'd never take him again.

Swords is an amazing teacher. He does everything possible to help students benefit from in class and make good grades. He provides information that relates to real life and that I will definately use when I leave college. Mr.Swords goes above and beyond the normal requirements of an English teacher. He has been my favorite teacher at Clemson.
What a waste of time -- take 209 from a GOOD teacher.
1 a : to cause to know something b : to cause to know how c : to accustom to some action or attitude d : to cause to know the disagreeable consequences of some action. This is the definition of "teach" from Webster's dictionary. Swords did teach, I guess, just not english. He caused me "to accustom to some action" -- his failure to do work.
Waste of time. I didn't get any work back until the final. He preaches, he definately doesn't teach. He hardly shows up. You can go for help and still get a terrible grade. Really, don't bother unless you can kiss butt incredibly well

I feel the past two ratings very accurately describe many people's feelings of Swords's class last spring -- it was a dissappointment and a lot of talk about how it was just a bad sememster. Maybe it was a bad semester for Swords, but I don't think that should impact the quality of education I receive.
He's the greatest teacher i've ever had. He is so caring! He gave us his cell phone number, and house number. The point is is that we can call him or meet with him whenever we need to, and he is always open to helping his students out. All he cares about is whether or not we will succeed. I love him, and I love the books we read in there. Books are really interesting. We watch movies outside to follow along with the. Sometimes we'll have dinner meetings. Whatever, he's the greatest teacher I've ever had!!!!
YOU GUYS ARE ALL CRAZY if you say he is hard or unhelpful. That means you didn't give him a chance, because he is open to helping whenever. He gave us his cellphone number for god sakes. How many teachers do you know give you their cellphone and house number and tell us to call anytime. I mean, he is the most helpful teacher i've ever had. My name is Sandy Ann G. If I could, I'd take him for every class!!!!!!!!!!!
HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! Stay away at all costs. He is an emotionally unstable man who brings his personal problems with him to class. He promises to give assignments back but never does. When the semester ended, I still did not know what 60% of my grade was. He also picks favorites. He grades on emotion and not merit. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! NO JOKE!
Useless teacher. Here are the facts based on my class: You won't get any assignments back, seeing him outside of class for papers will still get you a bad grade if he doesn't like your writing style, you need to dominate the conversation by agreeing with him if you want an A. Long story short: Take someone else!
swords is awesome...if you are lazy then dont take him because you will not do well, if you really want to get something out of a class and learn alot about english and yourself in a very enjoyable environment, then take swords. If your willing to put in a little work you will easily make an A... take him!
Best teacher ever!!! Take his class if you can. This was one of my favorite classes at Clemson!
Best teacher I've ever had. Don't listen to the people who say he has unreasonable expectations and won't assist students. While it's true that he expects a lot of his students and you WILL have to put in effort to get the most out of his class, he is very clear about his expectations from day one. Take his class if you really want to learn.
I loved Swords class. At first, he is a little intimidating but if you show him you are really trying and are interested in the class and what he has to say, he couldn't be nicer. I learned so much about English as well as myself. I hated English before taking this class. I never wanted to miss Swords' classes.
My personal experience w/ Swords: Swords has an easy class and also easy quizes, however, HE DOES severely penalize you for tardies and absences, beware also of his rediculously long exam(took me and 1/3 class at least 5 hours).

he's looks like truman capote. the final exam is looooooooong. but i got an A. he's interesting...
Attendance is mandatory, if you miss more than three you are dropped from the course. All you have to do is talk in class and have fun with it. He will try everything possible to help you get an A. So if you fail it's your fault.
Swords is the best teacher ever. All you have to do in the class is read what you are supposed to and then have fun talking about it. He cares about what his students take from his class and not about the grades unlike most other professors. I would totally recommend him and i would take him again in a heart beat!!!
Swords is my favorite teacher I have ever had at Clemson. He picks interesting things to read and spends class time discussing it. However, if you do not like reading at all, you might not want to take this class because it is a lot of work. He gives reading quizzes, and those are your only grades until the exam, which is really hard- took me 6 hrs
Best teacher at Clemson. All he asks is that you come to class and talk about readings. Attendance isn't mandatory, but classes are fun and thought-provoking. I wish I went more. No grades except for final. Took me 5 hours, but it was worth it. Def. take him.
nice guy. i dont liek his teaching style cause he asks a bunch of questions w/o writing much on the board but i still did good in the class anyway. Final exam is very long and cumulative. Says attendance not mandatory but takes off points if you have 3 or more. funny guy, i did better than i thought would def take again.
Allen Swords was an awesome teacher. He makes me a little crazy sometimes because he is constantly moving around, but the class was interesting and makes you think. He really makes an effort to get to know his students as people. If you show up and participate then the exam should be easy, which is good since its almost your whole grade.
I love his class! He is funny but very structural. He knows just about anything you want to know about WWII and I fell in love with a new subject! I am even thinking about changing my major. He is a lot of work but totally worth it! Take him!!
If you enjoy reading chick-lit and want to go on and on about his annoying opinions and personal beliefs, this is the class for you. Other wise, the man is creepy. Has serious emotional problems and try to impose his own beliefs on you. Run for the hills, dont worry ha cant keep up.
really awesome teacher. He will teach you so much if you are open to his advice and don't judge him by his looks( yes he wears comic shirts everyday) He really knows his stuff and is deeply concerned about his students. Really caring teacher. Highly recommend!!
Awesome professor! Final wasn't hard, though it's 70% of your grade. (He might have changed it this year from previous years.) It's pretty much an easy A if you read and participate in class. Very helpful and cares about his students. My favorite professor at Clemson! Definitely take him!! Books and readings are interesting, too!
This class is unlike any other. He likes to be provocative and can and probably will offend you at some point. The books are good. Going to class helps. The final being 70% of your final grade is a little nerve racking! If you love literature, a good class, if you want an easy class, go elsewhere.
Great teacher who really cares about his students. Always come to class prepared and you will do great. Strict attendance policy, but class is fun and very interesting. Challenges every student to be a deep thinker. Constantly asks questions. NOT your typical English class. Great books, even if you hate reading!
GET HIM!! He is SO passionate about teaching and his students. There are absolutely no tests, quizzes, or papers in this class. 10% of your grade is misc and 90% is your final which is take home. He could care less if you go to his class, and his class is completely discussion based. He will send 100 emails a day but he is so worth it!
He definitely offends his students and talks about provocative subjects, but I actually enjoyed English for the first time ever! The discussions are really fun, and he is very passionate about his job. The final was EXTREMELY difficult-it took me at least 24 hours to finish it and it's over 4,500 words, but it's 90% of your grade.
He's a likable person and is passionate about his class. That said, I learned nothing about English in his class. It was fun (at times), and he will make you learn new things. Just be prepared for his bumptious and provocative teaching style. But, he tries too hard to befriend his students and earn their respect. Some people liked that -not me
Swords will lecture every day; participation is not optional. He WILL call on you. The majority of your grade will not be determined until the last day of the semester. Only take this class if you're prepared to work hard.
Love the class during the semester! Swords is a fabulous teacher. The final is crazy stressful on top of all your other exams but as long as you follow directions you should be fine. Its a Holocaust Class so it's interesting. Take it.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD.I took 215 with him too.Would take his class every semester if I could.Loves his students.Makes class SO interesting. If you don't love literature, you will after his class and if you do, you won't be disappointed. You get six absences.Final is 100% of grade. If you can write essays and follow handouts you're good.
Swords will make you think in every class. He is sometimes brash but you learn to appreciate his honesty. Be prepared to be called on at random. Start the final early! He is very helpful if you email or go to office hours. Despite the difficult grading (final project is 80% of grade), he really does want you to succeed in his class and beyond.
Mr. Swords is a great teacher and person. He outlines the class in multiple handouts and is very helpful if you visit him after class. The class was easy as long as you read and participated when called on. There is only 1 paper/project which is due the last day of the semester. If started well in advance, it is a breeze.
His class was fairly easy but useful for improving my writing and communication skills. There is one big project that is 80% of your grade and the rest is participation in class discussion based on the reading. So if you read and participate in class and do well on the assignment, you're good.
If you want a professor who will really make you think about life you want this guy. Never have I experienced a class that was based solely on discussion about everyday problems. The books we read were inspiring and worth my time to read. Also, the guy is so lenient about attendance, and the reading homework is light. Overall, an excellent class.
Excellent Class...just make sure you read and think about what you read. You will be called on at random multiple times during each class so be ready.
this guy wheres the coolest funniest t-shirts! he helps his students out and is very clear on what needs to be done! he makes jokes and makes you actually think (not so bad). however if your shy you will get called out on to answer questions or just talk about discussion. This guy is an awesome teacher
Be prepared to work. He is awesome, but you have to keep up with him.
One of the best English teachers I have ever had. He is really passionate about what he is teaching, you just have to make sure you keep up with him. Loved Mr. Swords and loved the class.
Swords is awesome! He loves what he does and wants us to enjoy class. He cancelled class ALOT, but he made up for it by doing awesome reviews. Take him if you get the chance!
Swords is amazing! Not only were the books he chose interesting, but our group conversations were awesome. He cancelled class a lot, but definitely made up for it with our discussions. He has one of the best personalities of all the professors at Clemson. I would definitely take another class with him!
This teacher is awesome, gives you a better better underdstanding of the book that you have to read in class. He actually made reading enjoying to me and he has a very good selection in books and i think everyone in my class would feel the same. Very good teacher, take him if you can!!!
Best English 103 class. One paper and one final at the end of the year. We studied Star Wars for the whole semester. He cancels class alot. Awesome way to learn. Best English teacher on campus
Swords is the best professor I have had at Clemson. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about what he does. He genuinely cares about his students, and will go above and beyond to make sure everyone knows what it happening. I learned so much in his class and would recommend him to ANYONE taking an English class.
I loved Mr Swords and really enjoyed this class. Make sure to do the readings because you WILL get called on in class. Probably multiple times. But it was an easy A for me and I think the majority of the class. Take him if you want an easy and interesting course. Don't take him if you have crippling anxiety.
Swords is an amazing professor. Attendance is not required but you will want to come to class! I would take him any chance I get.
This teacher is the best teacher I have had at clemson, as a CompSci major I dreaded English, after being recommended swords by another student I took his class my first year at Clemson. He completely changed the way I view things in life with the novels he picked. Sure the class was easy, but he teachers so much more about life than English.
This class was fantastic. Every thing learned is applicable. Be prepared to do the homework and get called on; the class is discussion based. Also, work on the primary assignment throughout the semester. You don't want to procrastinate on a project that is so important.
I LOVED Dr. Swords's class. He's an incredibly down to earth, inspirational guy. I took the honors English 1030, and we learned by watching Star Wars - no novels, no papers, just Star Wars the movie. There were no grades really given in the class, and it is HIGHLY discussion based. I learned more from him than I ever have in an English class.
Dr. Swords made 8 am English a lot better than I expected it to be. He cares about his students and their success in his class, and in life in general. It is pretty much impossible to fail his class if you show up and participate. And there was no textbook!
Prof Swords is super laid-back. He really honestly cares about his students and the university. There are barely any homework, just some article readings or a notecard here and there. He gives off class really often and he has a really lax attendance policy. Overall great guy and awesome teacher. The discussions really make you think. Participate!!
The absolute best professor I've had. Actually cares about all of his students and is a great guy. You'll get an A as long as you pay attention and actively participate in the in class discussions.
Really easy teacher, very entertaining. We read 2 comic books
You'll leave this class with a changed perspective, a detailed knowledge of Star Wars, and a burning desire to let everyone around you know that they have to take Swords before they graduate. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable in what he teaches, but he is passionate, and that makes the class incredibly engaging. I wanted to come to this class!
Best professor at Clemson.
Amazing professor, cannot rave about him enough. Cares so much about his students, wants everyone to succeed. Super passionate about english! Hated english before this class, now I love it. Read certain books and show up to class and talk about it. Final exam essay is 100% of grade (daunting) but gives you all the materials to get an A.
Professor Swords is a treasure at Clemson, and any student would be lucky to have him. He is genuine and loving and takes an interest in his students lives outside of class. Swords made English fun and interesting. Class discussions that I had as a freshman have still left an impact on me as a Senior. He is truly the best.
No lie, one of the best, most international professors I've ever heard. Really cares his students. You will get and a A and we might change your life.
I cannot stress this enough, take Swords. He & ENGL2150 have changed my perspective on lit & life. Swords cares SO much for his students & wants them to think for themselves, more than anything. There is a lot of reading, but its very interesting texts. Coming from an Engineering major, it wasn't hard to balance time and was a great change of pace
Best professor I've ever had. Super nice and genuinely cares about all students. Very funny and gives useful lectures. We spent a lot of time talking about Marvel, Star Wars, Clemson football and other stuff like that. Can't rave about him enough. Everyone should try and take his class
Prof. Swords is definitely one of the gems of Clemson, I had an amazing time in his class
The class is fully discussion based and is interesting. He talks about comics, football, and Star Wars a bunch. I had 2 participation grades and 3 essays. He grades really fairly and as long as you participate in the class, you'll get a decent participation grade. I really recommend him.
Professor Swords is a great professor and this was one of my favorite classes! If you attend class and read the novels (3) then you will do great in the course. He gives reading quizzes (not tricky at all, if you read the book you can do very well), an essay and a final exam. Attendance isn't mandatory but you really need to go to class to do well.
Professor Swords really cares about his students and wants them to do well. While attendance isnt mandatory, I definitely recommend going to lecture because itll help you for the final exam and quizzes. The books he chooses really make you think. I recommend taking his class if you want an interesting 2150 class
Professor Swords is the best professor I had. I was not expecting to enjoy eng 101, but I definitely did. If you don't like to talk in class you might not like it. However, I am shy and he made me so comfortable sharing my thoughts. He allows everyone time to share their ideas which I really like. There is some homework but it is all interesting.
If you hate English take his class. He is the best professor I have ever had, he cares so much about his students. He gives you 1 on 1 advice about your essays and he proofreads if you ask. His class is very discussion-based and there is little to no homework. There are no quizzes and only 3 essays but he honestly is not a hard grader!!
Professor Swords is definitely the best professor I've had at Clemson so far. I had him for ENGL 1030 and he liked to call it Life 1030 because he cares more about giving you skills that you can use outside of the classroom than drilling literature into your head. Show up and participate, and this class will be one you will remember forever.
Prof. Swords has to be one of if not the best professor at Clemson. He does his job because he loves it and he gives every student his all. The class itself is an easy A but the books he chooses are actually interesting to read and discuss. I'm not a reader yet I've enjoyed his class. If you're lucky enough to get the chance to take him then do it!
I have never felt compelled to rate a professor for good or for worse, but Professor Swords is a phenomenal professor. He engages students and he cares more than any professor I have ever had. Could not recommend him more.
Dr. Swords is the best English professor at Clemson. There is a lot of reading for this class but he genuinely cares about all his students. Every class starts with him asking individual people how they are. He makes you think hard and respects different opinions. Definitely a gem of a professor at Clemson, fit his course into your schedule.
I'll be the first to say that I hate English. But Professor Swords made it slightly more tolerable. I took his class for 1030 and I'm glad I did. The classes are discussion-based and examine texts of many different varieties. Examples include Jaws, articles on the Clemson Football Team, Third-Eye Blind songs, Superman comics, etc.
Took this class asynchronously and he seems like a good guy. However, he HIGHLY restricted us in terms of what we could explore/write about. This guy had a 13 page list (single spaced) of topics that he "did not want to read about". He told us he wanted us to write what we were passionate about then proceeded to not let us do so. VERY frustrating.
Easily the best professor i've had at Clemson. Personal experience I had with Him minutes ago: End of Semester and I forgot to turn in my final Essay. 5 days late and he still graded it, got an 80. Most professors don't care but Professor Swords does, he doesn't want to see us fail.
Anyone who gives Prof. Swords less than a 5 is simply wrong. Swords is an amazing person overall and an amazing professor. He gives mental health days, is very supportive of his students, and gives you all the opportunity in the world to succeed. Swords is the best at Clemson.
Professor Swords really is a great teacher. The class has zero busy work and no tests. You read a couple of books that he picks out and talk about them in class in detail. He is always quick to respond to Email and even gives his students mental health days where there is no class and no work due. He really cares.
Hes by far the best professor ive had so far at Clemson! Go to class and youll get an A. Yes, class is not mandatory but its highly encouraged. Class is not boring, its actually fun, and by going to class itll keep you prepared to get an A. I did not have perfect attendance but I can say going to class does help in the end with your knowledge
Had his honors section. Kind, eager, enthusiastic; just wants to talk about material he loves. cares about your feedback and opinions, easy to impress. Plans mental health days off, axed weekly quizzes, replaced our final with a creative proj. Wrote everyone a complimentary note. Sweetest and best teacher to have.
Professor Swords is 100% the best professor at Clemson. He cares so much about what he teaches, but more importantly, the well-being of his students. Take him if you get the chance, I WISH I could again. He is so intelligent and inspirational.
Honestly the best English professor I have ever had. The class is made of daily discussions and you have 3 assignments which are a research proposal, a research paper, and a final. It's totally worth the fact that it's at 8 am because Professor Swords goes above and beyond for each student and truly cares.
I have never enjoyed a class as much as I have with Dr. Swords. Nobody at Clemson cares more about his work and his students more than he does. He is genuinely one of the kindest people I have ever met, and his class is a joy to take. Just hope you get lucky enough to get an early enough time slot to register, because his class is a must take.
Absolutely amazing professor and even better person. He's extremely understanding, rarely gives homework, and lets you write about what you're passionate about. I hate english with a passion and this was my favorite class. Definitely recommend to anyone in the same boat.
A great professor who truly enjoys his subject and actually cares about his students (has mental health days). There are only 3 major assignments, but he gives you plenty of time to do them and makes it clear what he expects. Absolutely would recommend taking him because he is very understanding and lets you write about things you actually enjoy.
Professor Swords is one of the best professors I have ever had and an even better person. He is so caring about his students and goes above and beyond to make sure they are well prepared for the 2 essays due.
Professor Swords is the best. I heard horrible things about professors before coming to college, so naturally I was scared for the sarcastic comments when unfortunate events happened to me this semester. Professor Swords was so kind and you can tell he is such a genuine, caring guy. I was blessed to have him this semester.
Prof Swords is the best person ever. He is so kind and does everything he can to ensure everyone gets the best grade possible. Graded of off two essays and participation during classes. The essays are so easy and he literally walks you through writing it. I used to HATE English, but thanks to Prof Swords it is now my favorite class.
He's easily the best professor I've ever had at Clemson. He cares so much about his students. He gives periodic mental health days, and his lectures are based on entertaining things like Disney, Marvel, etc. I would definitely take this class again and recommend it to anyone who wants to take it.
One of my favorite professors. He makes class so interesting and worth going to. And as long as you go to class you will definitely get an A in this class. He also cares about your well being so if you are sick or can't make it he understands. He made having an 8 am not so bad.
You want to have Professor Swords! He is so kind, funny, and easy going. Loved his English 1030 class and would 100% take it again! Easy class, fun lectures, and one you do not want to miss. Also, he learns your name very fast!
Professor Swords is an incredible educator and person. He makes a genuine effort to show that he truly cares about his students and their well-being, giving you plenty of mental health days. His course is very manageable with little work outside of class, and plenty of time to complete heavy weighted assignments. Everybody should take his class.
I can not stress the 1.0 difficulty enough, if you are willing to do the work you will get an A. He wants you to better you writing skills and takes a relatively unorthodox approach to doing so (a lot of videos rather than book reading). If you are a fan of classic literature or English classes this is not the class for you.
Mr. Allen is a one-of-a-kind teacher! He cares so much about his students and creates a open & interesting class atmosphere each day. His emphasis in this class is to help you succeed and earn that A, and I can't stress enough how fun it is to hear what he has to say about the class readings and assignments. One of Clemson's best teachers!!
Prof Swords is very caring and laid back. He was not a harsh grader and the class was entertaining. He relies on class participation so do the homework and speak up. If no one responds he'll cold call. If no one did the homework, he could tell he'll give pop quizzes. The work isn't hard, easy A
I've heard many good things about this professor, and they were right. He helped me get over my jaded view of reading because of terrible books in high school. I exempted the exam because I wrote four 1000-word essays just from watching movies about the content of the class. He missed a lot of days, but it was fine since we stayed caught up.
Mr. Swords is one of the most caring professors you will ever meet. Attendance is not required, and he cancels class very often anyways. The class is very easy, there was only one essay for the entire semester. The books you will read are actually interesting and his class is a little unconventional, but if you do the work you'll get an A.
cancelled class more than half the time, picked interesting books (superman, batman, princess bride), and really cares about his students. class is solely discussion, and entire grade is participation and a single final paper. alway willing to help you out. im taking his class again next semester bc i enjoyed it so much and it was so easy
Pretty chill guy. He really does want you to succeed in his class, so show up and do the readings, they're kinda interesting at times. He cancels class a lot anyways.
What an angel! Cares about each student beyond an academic level. Books are actually pretty interesting, but they were primarily on historic events. You are spending about an hour before each class period reading and are expected to participate in group discussion. Class is an easy A and would take again in a heartbeat! Cancels class often too!
Class discussion was most important thing. No papers or homework. Books were interesting and he explains everything in class. Never any confusion. Cared about students and knows we are human. Best prof I've had in college.
Mr. Swords is amazing!! The books we read in this class were so well chosen and our class was set up in a discussion format which was wonderful. He will teach you so much not only about English and History but about yourself and the lessons of life. Just be sure to attend class and contribute. One of the best professors and people at Clemson!
Dr. Swords was the best professor I have had! He is so kind, and he really wants every single student to do well. You will always have reading to do before each class, but it's never difficult. He is very clear on how to do well in his class and offers alternate versions of exams if you don't like taking timed tests. Absolutely Amazing!
Professor Swords is an awesome educator. It is obvious that he cares about his students and he will do his absolute best to make sure you get something out of his class. He is very understanding but definitely expects your best work.
I cannot stress enough how much I love Prof Swords. He truly is one of the kindest, most considerate people I've EVER met, and such a caring person who truly cares deeply for each of his students. There are books you have to read, but honestly, I barely read and pulled an A+ due to participation. Despite his health battles, he shows up and loves us
Definitely do not take this class if you aren't comfortable with speaking multiple times each class. I found it to be easier than writing papers (as he hasn't had us write one yet), but I know that isn't everyones cup of tea. You basically just talk as a class the entire time while he throws out random questions at you. Love Dr. Swords though!!
Participation is 100% mandatory so you have to come prepared and ready to share your thoughts on assigned readings. However, he picks texts that students will actually be interested in reading! You can tell he's passionate about the content and his students. He emphasizes the importance of mental health and wants you to learn and grow.
Prof. Swords is one of the best - he makes the class engaging through insightful book discussions. With just 2 essays, the workload is manageable. Unstuck study was a big help for essay prep.
Professor Swords is my favorite professor i've ever had. He cares about his students and is highly respected. He believes in learning lessons that you will continue to learn throughout your life rather than just to pass a test. No papers, your grade is based on class discussion and participation and he explains the reading material very well.
I could not recommend Dr. Swords enough! He is one of the best professors I've taken at Clemson and by far the most caring. He loves his job and it reflects heavily in his classes. Coursework is fair, lots of reading but AMAZING discussions in class. He wants all of his students to succeed and is the model of what every professor should be!
Take Professor Swords class!! You won't regret it! He truly is one of the most caring professors on campus and you will earn an A if you participate and show up to class! This class is not your typical english class as you get to explore so many versions of literature including movies!
Such a great guy, currently have him for his Vietnam War class, and his discussions are amazing. The books you read can be kind of tough, but are overall very entertaining. I 100% recommend taking him if you can.
Take Professor Swords if you have the chance! The class is all discussion based, so all you have to do is read and participate and you will get an A. He is also so sweet and very passionate about what he teaches as well!
All of the other reviews are totally correct. If you need a literature credit but don't like reading, Swords will get you to like it. He is the best professor I've had at Clemson and the only one who has shown to actually care about his students. There is a lot of reading, but he chooses books that are actually interesting. Take him!!!
Took Swords for 2120. It was a great class to take as an 8 AM b/c he makes the class interesting that it keeps you awake. The entire class was just 2 exams that cover the readings, films, & class discussions. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I highly recommend you still show up and participate. Also take notes on each of the films before the exams.
Honestly, the best professor I have ever had. He cares for his students, he doesn't assign busy work/essays, and is very enthusiastic about his job. Couldn't recommend him more if you are looking for an English class. Participate=easiest A ever
Great professor—he truly cares about you and your success as a student. Does not believe in busy work/essays. The class is discussion-based, so participation matters. Made class fun while still learning.
