This guy is great, REALLY wants to help you. I wish all lab profs were like Chang. Strong accent but you'll still learn.
worst prof i've ever had. he doesn't know how to teach and if you ask him a question he either gets mad and makes a funny noise or just taps on the board harder. The class is easy to pass but if you are looking to learn then this is not the guy for you. He also compares the students to being dumber than first graders. A bit condescending.

I took him for about three weeks and never understood a single word he said.

worst teacher ever. Had to drop cause i couldn't understand a single word.
stupid I didn't know anything he said with his accent. Don't take his class, worst, worst, worst...
i strongly recommend that you do not take this class. chang is horrible, he doesn't teach at all, his grading is inconsisten and you won't be able to understand one word that he says.
he was the most stupid teacher in the world.
Learn it on your own and you can pass... don't ask questions because he thinks only stupid people ask them and will yell at you and tell everyone else in the class that you're "du as ocks" if you can't understand him, that means dumb as rocks.
If possible stay away...He is okay after class, but during class DO NOt ask questions. He only observes and is not helpful. He starts off by grading hard and then as the class progresses he gives you some credit!
I learnt a lot. He is funny.
He helps me a lot. He help me to understand the subject even he has an accent. He is available to help student 24/7.
Worst teacher ever!!!! He doesn't help u when u need it. He English is bad!! He makes people feel bad and grades hard. Don't ever take him unless u wanna fail. He shouldn't be teaching period!!
Not a very good instructor to have for Lab. He is condescending, implying that we are stupid, that first graders could understand better. I really don't have much of an issue with his accent, but his way of explaining the subject matter is difficult to understand. His grading is also confusing, with marking off points for the smallest things.
this guy can't even speak english, let alone teach. he gave a quiz on his sylabus, which everyone failed. If you are late to his class he will lecture you in front of everybody about being late and he will count off of your grade, Don't know how this guy got hired. Horrible!!
Although I'm sure Professor is a nice guy in the real world, he is a terrible teacher. Yes he knows what he's talking about, but he cant teach it. Its extremely hard to understand him and If you want a quick lab, this is not the class to take, he lectures each lab class for an hour before you even get to start your lab. Very poor instructor.
He is funny and very helpful.I learnt a lot from hiom.
He is an excellent instructor. He is trying very hard to make every student succeed and to get a passing grade. He helped me a lot.
He is an outstanding and excellent instructor. He taught me so much in Chemistry. If anyone wants to learn Chemistry, enroll in his class.
He was a horrible teacher. He can't speak much english at all, yells if you don't understand him, and shouldn't be teaching. Do not take him for any Chem Lab classes !!
Beyond the broken English and heavy accent, the guy does his job and he can be funny. The test on the syllabus is opportuned extra credit and the hard grading makes you study. Is that so bad? Even I was yelled at (which started the whole syllabus test thing to begin with). I got an A for a final grade. Grow up. Lighten up. It's an easy class.
I had his lab, he's very hard to understand! Get a close seat, or get close when he lectures, and write everything down that he puts on the board. It helps to read ahead in your lecture book, toward the end of the semester especially.
Had him for 100 and 110. Not as bad as he may seem. If you are a chemistry major hes definately one of the easier teachers out there, and he does emphasize learning the material. Tends to yell and is rough around the edges making him a little unapproachable, but actually a decent teacher. Heavy accent and knows it, tries to make up 4 it. Not hard.
He is interested in teaching and helping student to lean chemistry. If you don't take notes, you are not going to do good in the exam and the lab. You'll learn chemistry from him.
Very Annoying. He cant explain anything. He gets angry when people don't understand, and just makes wierd noises and taps the whiteboard harder. His accent is hard to understand.
He's an easy teacher if you know what youre doing. If you ask a question though he's great at making you feel dumb, regardless of the question. When explaining he has little organization and can take 20 mins to explain one simple concept. Very difficult to understand his accent. Easy if you are familiar with the topic, but otherwise no.
I took Professor Chang for Chem 100 Lab. He was very hard to understand due to his heavy accent and was very confusing. He didn't explain things well nor did he fully answer questions when they were asked. He ridiculed students who didn't understand him and gave tests on material he didn't go over. I don't recommend him, he'll hurt your grade.
He is very hard to understand. He teaches stuff that the chem book doesn't even have in it. You never want to ask a question b/c he makes people feel dumb. He does give a lot of extra credit though
Cannot decipher his words at all. He yells at you if you have a question or if you do not understand fully. He can't answer your questions until AFTER he has graded the lab work, and if he doesn't know the answer, he will dismiss you with a "You should already know this." He loses the work you have turned in then docks you points for it.
He grades strictly - there's lots of EC though. His accent is hard to understand but he'll repeat things if you ask. He can be scary if you don't pay attention, but if you study you'll be fine. He's happy to explain things if you're making an effort to learn. I'd look for more classes taught by him.
Very funny guy and keeps the class interesting. however! he is the hardest teacher i have had in my life. his tests are tricky to the extreme and they are 40 percent of the grade (which is alot for a Lab). it is an enjoyable class but i would say basically impossible to get an A. he is very smart but i would not recomend
Very hard; the class average was a D...and most lec profs count lab as 20-30% of your grade; so if you're in between grades it won't help at all. there was no extra credit as others have stated. Be on time, take notes, have fun on the lab final HA
I was able to pull off an A in this class, but only because it was chem. 100L, which in and of itself isn't too much of a challenge. However, taking this class with Dr. (I hate giving him that title... doesnt deserve it) Chang made getting an A far more difficult than it had to be.
extremely hard to understand because of his accent and low tones voice. He is NOT willing to help you when you need clerification on a lab question. He give you a test worth lots of points just on his sylabus! His final is EXTREMELY difficult!! Not to mention your NOT allowed to miss more than one EXCUSED class or be <5 min's late
VERY strict teacher! expects the absolute best, and strives for perfection for every assignment. his brutal, harsh grading forces YOU to become accurate and precise in every calculation. If you can get an "A" in his chem 110 lab or higher class, you WILL gain the skills to compete with students from top universities. that's how hard he is!
Dr. Chang is an extremely hard grader for a lab professor. He always says "if you can pass my class you can beat berkley students" and what not. But honestly, his accent is too thick to understand, when you ask a question he yells at you, and when you turn in your labs, he looks at every single detail. wouldn't recommend this teacher at all.
Tough. He's pretty fun at times and honestly most of the labs are pretty enjoyable because he just has funny and weird quirks that sometimes everyone just bursts out laughing at, leaving him smiling confused. tons of extra credit, MAKE FLASHCARDS because sometimes he will give extra credit +1 point PER flashcard. Also take notes which can earn EC.
This class was really hard, I am not good in Chemistry and failed in high school. I needed to pass for my Nursing pre-req and I am glad I had this professor. Gave me lots of time and help. A little difficult to understand but fair and offers extra credit.
Know your syllabus, Dr. chang follows this very closely. He also has a very thick accent, to the extent of being impossible. However science majors may notice that english is a second language among their instructors. Minimum input = Minimum output
BEWARE!!! He is absolutely the hardest teacher. He freaks out if you ask questions.. he will yell at you. He gets frustrated a lot. He has the thickest asian accent so its really difficult to understand everything he says. Do your labs perfectly... thats how you pass.
Perfectionist.Temperamental.Quirky:much like other mad scientists. He really wants you to be independent. Don't ask Q's b4 class. He says to look up answers on internet but it's flooded w/ wrong answers. Most answers are in diagrams of yr text. Will yell but don't take it personally. Stand there until he answers all yr Q's.
Extremely harsh grader. Test questions are sometimes unclear. Yells a lot but not on purpose I guess. Just don't take his class.
Will mark you down for answering a question not to his liking (regardless of having the correct answer). WILL MARK 1/2 OFF FOR SIG FIGS. He does not yell because he is mad, he yells because his voice does not carry. Not all bad. But don't take him. NOTE: Requires an $80-100 lab book, only uses a few labs, does NOT allow photo copies!
DON'T TAKE CHANG!! He marks off for any small imperfection, even if you get the right answer. His voice doesn't carry and he has a very thick accent. He doesn't help very often and won't listen to his students if they have something to say. Good luck to anyone who has Chang.
I took Chem100 from Dr. Chang in 2009. He is an excellent and hard instructor. I took his advice and treated Chemistry as a foreign language. I Memorized the names of compounds and formulas using the flash cards and followed the rules of significant figures in all calculations. I got all A's in his exams and all lab reports.
Don't ever take him. He is the worst teacher you will ever get if you're in his class. He doesn't really teach, you must be an independent student or person because he will just watch you do your things. His accents and the way he talks is horrible, heavy Tawainese accent. His grading is strict, no partial credit. It's either right or wrong.
Do NOT take Chang. He is very contradictory, does not give partial credit and tests are VERY hard! His accent throws me off a lot of the time, and hard to understand exactly what he wants. The class is always very slow and he is not a fair grader.
I chose this class despite the ratings because I don't believe in "EASY A's" I think people are quick to judge this teacher based on his "accent". I feel as if "some" individuals are prejudiced and thus get easily frustrated when having to listen to him. I can tell you that this is VERY WRONG and it makes me feel culturally offended.
Chang is a very hard professor with different cultural standards. His tests are hard, so be prearded and ready for the tests.I warn anyone against taking this class for an easy "A" this class is very difficult with Chang, but in the end it is all worth the effort
This was the second time taking Dr. Chang's lab. He is strict and I appreciate it. My other labs have been chaotic and confusing, without order. 15% of the final grade is on attitude w/ a bonus 5% for perfect attendance. It seemed like Dr. C graded very tough but in the end, the 20% of effort paid off and I received an A. It's all about effort.
Do not take chang unless you already understand chemistry and are an independent student. He is very hard and a strict grader. He is a professor who's suposed to "teach" but he doesn't. If you ask him for help or have any questions, he gets mad and starts rambling. Horrible professor!
Very difficult to understand because of accent, gets frustrated when questions are asked, and doesn't explain the labs very clearly.
I took his class despite the rating and I don't regret it. He's one of the best professors and you'll get an A or B if you don't miss class, take notes, and pay attention. He has a strong accent but you'll get used to it. tough grader.he gives extra credit for perfect attendance and an organized note book.
This Professor is absolutely terrible! I don't understand how he is still teaching here. He marks 5 points off for writing in pencil (including math equations) and when you ask questions, he yells at you and even calls you stupid. I only took his class because I had no other options since all the other labs were full. Do not take his class!
He has accent. He is Strict, but in his class I can learn a lot which lecture doesn't cover, and it's useful.
DR.Chang isn't a bad professor as others have stated below. You need to EARN your grade. He isn't an easy A, so you have to work hard for it. I actually enjoy his teachings because some of the material that I didn't understand in the lecture; he clarified it for me. You just need to be patient with him and his accent. I'm glad I took him.
It's for our own good if a professor is hard and strict, and that is something we tend to forget. I want to remind everyone this and say that Dr. Chang is an excellent instructor. He writes notes on the board and answers your questions as well. His format is easy to follow and he also has a funny sense of humor. I really recommend taking his class!
I don't know what all the fuss is about. If you read your lab book like your suppost to before class then you will get an A with flying colors. Everything in the book is on the test. if you take notes while he talks you'll pass the tests which make up for 70% of your grade. 5 points off with a pencil but you learn and carry on. I'm still getting A
He is not as difficult as people say he is. He tells you what you need to do and is easy if you follow directions. He even gives you an extra 5 percent for attending every class. Just do the work and it's an easy A
He is not meant to teach. He gets easily frustrated and openly embarrasses and belittle you in front of everyone. If he asks the class a question and if a person responds with a wrong answer, he will embarrass you and basically make you feel very stupid to where you do not want to open your mouth again.
Don't take his lab just gives exam on lectures instead of the experiments. Gets mad very easily. Very hard to understand has hard accent and speaks softly unless he is mad
I took Chang and his lab class and it is not hard. I even missed 2-3 days and still received an A. Oh no, he has an accent...so do billions of other people, including you. He makes you write in pen, you'll live. And yes, remember your sig-fig because it is required from him because he is the instructor, follow his rules. Breathe, you'll do fine.
Very confusing, impossible to understand. When you ask to clarify, he gets very upset and irritated. VERY uptight about sig figs and gives an hour lecture about pens, sig figs, and other picky stuff at the start of every class. Only 2 people passed the exams and he had to give out extra credit at the end cause EVERYONE did horribly in the class.
First 2 weeks of class he flipped out on two girls and broke a beaker all over there desk. Next 2 weeks, at least 5 people have complained about his grading because he wants more than what the question is asking. So far i wouldn't advise you to take this professor. Just not a clear and good teacher in my opinion
Has great intentions just has a very thick accent. is a difficult grader and tends to expect more than normal from students. Goes on rants quite often when students mess up.
He's tough and has a strong accent but he can be funny. Just show up everyday and follow directions and you'll pass. Always ask if you are unclear on anything because chances are you are wrong! Very strict, but some people need that.
First of all Allison Chang is a great professor! I'm currently in general chemistry and I feel Im really prepared because this guy pushes you learn your sig. Figs. Take this guy you will pass as long as you do your labs! If your major is in the bio or Chem field he is the man. Oh yeah he gives extra credit for your attendance it's hard to fail!!!
Must make it to class or you won't pass.
Easily the least approachable teacher I've ever had. He doesn't answer questions without yelling at you first and is super confusing when explaining the lab proceduresmaterial. If you're really good at chem and don't mind being in a room with someone ranting for 3 hours then go for it, otherwise steer clear
Dr. Chang... Summer with this guy was extremely tough. Even though the strong accent, he really means well. HE WANTS TO PASS YOU! No matter what grade you get on the labs or the tests, he will pass you. Gives 5% free credit for 100% attendance and lots of extra credit. #1 thing to watch for, SIG FIGS. Make sure you learn them.
Prepare to have patience in this class if you want to remain sane and hope to pass. Dr. Chang is not very approachable and even made me cry in class once because I didn't understand a topic. Don't expect to get out early either, he keeps you for the full lab period, even if you are done with your lab.
If you can get past the accent and his odd angry behavior, he will help you. you must be there every single day, especially if taken during the summer. 5% given to your grade for 100% attendance. must learn sig figs or you will, as he might say "DOOMED." He is pretty passive too once you get used to his style, you'll find out he isnt so bad haha.
Honestly he's a horrible teacher. He expects you to know everything and won't explain a thing. I thought I would be able to handle it but he is honestly one of the worse lab instructors I've ever had. I had no choice between professors for this class but if I did he would be the last pick.
Professor Chang is condescending and screams at students who ask questions for clarification. He does not reach. He rambles, is very difficult to understand, and even when you can understand, he makes no sense. Worst professor I've ever taken.
Dr. Chang does not help or understand his students. He expects you to have learned everything prior the lab, and is very impatient. His accent makes his lectures near impossible to understand, his grading is harsh and makes no sense. He is super defensive about criticisms and blames students. Avoid if possible, otherwise, be patient and good luck.
Dr. Chang has a very heavy accent that makes him hard to understand. He is a VERY tough grader. But he does not always keep you till the end of class. Some people in my class did well with him but the majority of the class did not.
Dr. Chang is one of the best and outstanding professors. You must listen to his lecture, take notes and take his advice. If you want to pass, do not miss or cut his lab. He tries to make you understand chemistry and apply chemistry to your every day life. He is very caring and very soft in heart. Take his lab. You will not regret it.
Killed it! So happy to be done and to pass. The class is legit but passable if you study and do labs. Prof was kind. Looks like a bunch of others didn't study cuz i thought it was totally what id expect from college chem.
This is the WORST professor you will ever get. Super rude, not helpful, makes you feel bad for asking questions, and makes it seem like you are a burden to his life. If you have this professor I would advise you to change it unless you want to be pulling your hair out all semester. Grades are curved in the end.
My class asked multiple times to please go over the material again and he did it reluctantly saying that it's time out of our day and not his Although his class was awful and I passed it I do not recommend anyone else take it there are so many other caring and actually good professors out there who need full classes and Alison Chang is not one.
Allison Chang goes out of his way to make the class as hard as possible for every student. The material itself is fairly easy, but he will make you feel stupid for asking simple directional questions and is also very hard to understand due to his accent, constant yelling and rants. Do yourself a favor and take this class with anyone else.
Prof. Changs teaching style is NOT for me. He rants and complains a lot, especially when a major fraction of the class messes up. I can tell he tries to be helpful, but it never seems to work out. He often made me more confused, so I didnt go to him for help. He calls students out when they ask questions or answer his questions incorrectly.
Lots of HW, and long. However, it's easy to pass the class with a decent grade, if and only if you complete all of the homework that is given. If you don't complete or turn in some of your assignments you opt-out for him giving you a good grade at the end. SERIOUSLY at the end I had an F and he changed it to a B, I guessed on most of the HW,
Want a professor that says all assignments due on a Saturday then have random assignments posted throughout the week with no announcement. Blames students for his poor direction and teaching skills. Then this is the perfect professor for you.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I am and have always been a straight A student and this professor has said countless inappropriate rude things to his students. After asking for help and being told you guys make me want to scream and use your brain I urge you to run for the hills and avoid this professor at all costs.
