She's sooo super sweet . She's really young and personable, very easy going . Explains every assignment, makes herself available, and genuinely cares that you succeed . She's very softspoken and NICE . I highly recommend her, especially for someone with a fear or public speaking .
She is an amazing teacher. I have heard all the horror stories about other com 115 classes and you don't have to worry about any of that in her class. She isn't a push over but she is such a good teacher. She grades fairly and treats everyone as an individual. You should REALLY try to take her!!
So cute and so sweet. Loves to laugh and have a good time with the class discussions. Her speech assignments were a lot easier than some of the other teachers.
Nice, younger teacher. Very soft-spoken but a pretty good teacher.
I thought she was easy and really nice. SHe is there to help out and she does a good job.
Allison is a wonderful teacher. The class is a lot of fun and you would have no regrets. Your overall grade will be good, if you are willing to show an interest.
She is a great teacher! She was very helpful and although she is young, she definitly knows a lot about public speaking. She is a soft spoken woman and if you want a good grade be willing to work hard on your speeches. Class is definitly fun and I do recommend her!
I was dreading taking this class because I thought that I was going to have a very strict teacher with a harsh grading scale. That was definitely not the case in Allison's class. She made this class fun, and not very stressful. She is extremely helpful and kind. I recommend her class a lot.
Allison is a great teacher that knows a lot about speaking. Just follow her instructions she gives you and you'll be fine.
I waitied as long as possible to take this class, because I was dreading it. I am so glad I took it with Allison as a teacher. She is fantastic and very sweet. She made class fun and not as stressful. You still have to do the work, but she is very helpful. Take Allison Coltharp! She is the best!
I can't imagine any other teacher being better then what Allison was! I wasnt totally excited to take this class but after the first speech I felt totally at ease and very happy to be in the class. She is very helpful and very nice. A Great all around teacher and person!
She was very helpful and made you more relaxed than normal while up in front of others. She was a great teacher and I recommend her.
Allison is a Great teacher. She is so sweet and she makes you feel very comfortable in class. I have one of the biggest fears of public speaking and she helps so much. She is always easy to talk to and will always answer questions. I highly recommend her.
She is a very good teacher, she tries to make class a fun experience. The only thing is that when you get a bad speech she doesnt really tell you whats wrong.
Allison Coltharp is such a nice teacher and she is funny too. My husband took Mrs. Boris and said that she was unfair and unhelpful, so I was not looking forward to taking this class. It was so easy though!I got a very high A, it definitely took effort but it wasn't horrible and I wasn't as nervous as I thought I would be. There was no final test j
For some reason this teacher had something against me and it was evident that is was taken out on my grades. Very unprofessional!
she was my favorite teacher this semster. you dont have to go to every class but it's definatly a perk. she makes the class fun.
You have to go every class, and study becasue you need enough information for yours out lines, however she explains everything that you need to know in an easy way. She doesn't take final test and she is a very good teacher. You learn but not in a very hard way.
Allison made class fun! She's adorable and very helpful! I never felt nervous when it was time to give a speech!
Ms. Coltharp was very helpful and encouraging, outlines are simple and she dosent grade based on how much she liked the topic like Ive heard some com teachers do.
Fair grader and very understanding. Learned alot but this class did not take up all of my time.
sometimes you feel boared, but you have to attend the classes. classes worth points. 2 easy quizes and one final project(speech). easy A. DO NOT MISS HER.
we used the book twice. the class has four speeches and one final project(speech). you have to attend the class because each class worth points. over all EASY A. do not miss her..
I love Coltharp's class. I despise public speaking, but she makes this class really fun. She makes everyone feel very comfortable while speaking in front of the class. She also gives great feedback. I would highly recommend her!
She was very nice and easy. Her classes however always felt like they were dragging on. She was more than willing to say after class or meet with you if you are having trouble researching a topic. On days where rough drafts are due you get to leave early or have her look over it and tell you what to fix. Take her if you can!
I honestly thought her class was a lot tougher than a Gen Ed speech class should be. I got an A in the class, but it was like a 91% and I consider myself a very fluid and structured speaker. She's not the worst teacher, but if you have another, maybe easier option, go with that.
Her class was pretty laid back. There was a lot of work to be done but that's how all COM classes are. If you put in effort, you should receive a decent grade. Overall Ms. Coltharp was very friendly and willing to be flexible and helpful with students! Take her!
I thought she was very unfair when grading, she says you can make up one speech but if she doesn't like you, you're not going to get to make up a speech. If you miss just one class don't be expecting to get an A.
I loved Ms. Coltharp! She was a very fair grader. If you are not a great public speaker, there are a lot of easy points from in-class assignments, so go to class! Lectures can get a little boring, but I would definetely recommend her.
Ms. Coltharp is very professional, and very fair. She lays out exactly what you are to do. She makes the classroom very comfortable for you, which is a big plus if you are nervous about public speaking. There was hardly any homework, and she truly cared about your feedback on how she ran the class. I would take again in a heartbeat!
Not the hardest or easiest teacher. I would recommend her, though. My speaking abilities definitely improved, and she's really helpful!
Great teacher!! Very helpful take her take her take her!!
She was a good teacher. You don't have to attend every class, but it is beneficial. There are some very easy in writing points. Participate! Only down side is when she took off points on your speech you didn't really know where she counted off. She is fair in grading and wants you to succeed. Follow instructions and you will get an easy A.
Excellent teacher! She is nice and very willing to help you. Attendance is important because she does in class participation points. Grading scale for speeches can be hard to get an A-but she makes the requirements for the speeches clear. We did 4 speeches and you will need the textbook. I would definately recommend taking her class.
Easy class. If you go to class and do your work, you'll get a good grade. Her notes get boring, but there aren't many of them.
She is very easy but very boring. Follow the outline and speech notes in the workbook and you will do just fine. She will keep you in class for the whole time even if she has nothing to talk about
I came into the class with no interest in public speaking and left with an undying hatred for it. She was pretty boring and dry and didn't make the class fun at all. I dreaded going every day.
Extremely organized and helpful. Very clear expectations and assignments. Attendance is crucial as participation points count daily. Very nice person who truly cares about the student and progress. Highly recommend this professor.
Wonderful teacher! She is very helpful, truly cares about her students, and teaches well. This was a difficult class and she has very high standards. She grades speeches very strictly but is very generous with participation points. So attend every class. Very good teacher.
Very easy going and laid back teacher..knows what she's doing and very helpful..kind of boring but easy class. Just go to class, do the work, and put forth effort and youll get an A.
Great Professor! Genuinely interested in focusing on areas that interest her students. Always asks for student input when deciding where to focus material. Gives constructive feedback on all speeches. Really cares about her students improving their public speaking skills. Down to earth and funny! Easy A and you improve your skills. TAKE HER!
Allison was always well prepared and I knew what she expected in an A speech. Her detailed feedback on each speech was helpful. The class atmosphere was comfortable and encouraging, ideal for overcoming speech anxiety. She genuinely cared about her students and wanted each one to improve. Go to class and follow her instructions and you'll get an A.
Coltharp is one of the most personable teachers I have ever met. She is willing to help any of her students out on any level as long as you show her the respect that she deserves. Her GEP class is extremely easy, yet helpful. I highly recommend her.
At first she was very nice and impersonable, but as the semster went on I could definitely see her picking favorites (which infuenced her gard to students). She was an alright teacher but if you missed a few classes, she pretty much didn't like you, which I thought was unfair. Do not take her!
She is really helpful and willing to work with her students. She makes sure that her classrooms are taught in a fun but in a learning enviornment.
Allison was great! She is very laid back but still professional. I dreaded taking a speech class and she made it easy and not as frightening. She takes attendance through participation points which could make or break you in long run.She doesnt grade speeches hard and is very understanding and helpful when she knows you're nervous just let her know
Its not a bad class but you get points for going to class. So if you miss a lot of classes you miss a lot of points. Classes can drag on sometimes but follow the guidelines and practice your speech and its not bad.
Great teacher. Very helpful! Go to class or you'll drop letter grades. You receive at least 5 points per day so you can't afford to miss. She's also a very fair grader, she doesn't nit-pick.
I absolutely loved Mrs. Coltharp. The subject matter she teaches is pretty common sense but she uses a variety of teaching techniques to encourage participation. She's also extremely funny but doesn't even know it. I highly suggest her as a professor. Com 115 is a required class so you might as well have a professor you enjoy!!!
Professor Coltharp is so nice! She does well on making the class interesting. She is a little tough on grading speeches, but as long as you fix what she tells you to, you'll do fine. You get participation points almost every day, so go to class. Great professor!
Mrs. Coltharp always tries to make class interesting. She can be a tough grader on speeches but as long as you do what she tells you to you'll be fine. She gives a lot of participation points so always try to show up for class
I got A's on all the speeches but got a B because of how ill prepared we were for the exam.
I got an A on all the speeches but got a B in the class because of how much she did not prepare us for the midterm and final
This class was kind of lame
When in front of the class she would seem nice and innocent, but as soon as you would get one on one, she would become completely rude. If you missed just one class, she would hold a grudge and treat and even grade you differently.
Interesting teacher. She is kinda timid but she knows her stuff. The class was boring but she gives attendance points. She doesn't prepare you for midterm or final very well. Her class was alright. But go to class and PRACTICE your speech a lot.
She is an excellent instructor. I absolutely hate public speaking, but she made a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. It's not difficult to get a good grade. She takes attendance so you can get easy points there. Overall I would definitely recommend this instructor!
As long as you get A's on your speeches, and have 3 or less absences, you'll get an A. She gives you lots of time to work on assignments before they're due. But if you don't keep up with them, your grade will suffer.
Coltharp is a pretty good speech teacher. She is clear about what she wants and gives you a lot of feedback on speeches so you can improve. That said, she is a tough grader on speeches and the departmental midterm and finals are surprisingly more difficult than you would expect.
Grades tough on the speeches, but just to make you better overall. Lectures are not too bad. Participation and attendance are EXTREMELY important. There are lots of points for those two things. Exams are departmental so it is difficult for her to prepare you in a specific way. She was very helpful to me throughout the entire semester. Recommend!!
Allison Coltharp was an amazing professor! I was a good speaker before I took her class and an even better one when I left! She is a little picky when grading your speeches with her rubrics, but if you ask her what you need to fix, she will telling you clearly. Summed up: Great professor. Helpful. Clear. Concise. Organized. Received an A.
Such a sweet lady. Gives great feedback after a speech. She is a very strong rule follower, so don't think anything crazy is going to happen. Each class is about the same. Not much to her, but she is always willing to help.
Very standard speeches and things of that nature. The final and the midterm are from the book, which aren't taught in class. Really tough. Overall not a bad professor, take the class seriously though.
Coltharp is a tough grader but if you email her asking for help she will be more lenient with you. She does give good feedback on your speeches. She does not give online quizzes like other Com teachers. Very passionate about public speaking. She is somewhat odd and takes a while to get use to.
Coltharp was always willing to help and grades easy on the speeches as long as you do the best you can. Never skip class though, it will ruin your grade entirely. The only reason I recommend NOT to take this woman is because of how ill prepared I was for the midterm/final. It's a gen ed class, and I got a B in it solely because of those 2 exams.
Ms. Coltharp was always so willing to help and go out of her way to assist me. Gave participation points, but were easy to get because I loved coming to her class! Also more than willing to meet outside of class. Very nice woman; would definitely take again!
Coltharp is a nice lady, but has no business teaching an intercultural communication class. Until the second half of the semester, we only learned about family communication - which had no relevance. After being called out, she got better. None-the-less, she over-explains everything, treats you like you're five, and isn't a very good teacher.
She was very nice, but seemed to be a bit scatterbrained. I would definitely suggest taking her for a public speaking course rather than intercultural communication because she is not the right fit for a diversity class. She is slow to update grades and can be tough on some grading. Overall, I did not find her course very engaging - not the best.
She's a very nice lady and was a good teacher. The only complaint I have was that we never used the textbook, and the midterm and final were solely based off the book. The tests were the only reason I got a B. She also doesn't have much of a personality, so she tends to be very boring. Can be picky when grading speeches. Overall would recommend.
Took her for Public Speaking II and was so worried because it had been years since I'd taken COM 115! She was so helpful!! One of the sweetest teachers ever. If you're worried about public speaking definitely take her! As long as you try and work on what needs improvements and go to class every day you will get an A. I learned a lot from her!
Allison was a great teacher. I hate public speaking as much as the next guy, but I really think that she helped me gain more experience with speaking in front of people and not being so nervous about it. There were quite a few impromptu speeches, but no longer than 30 seconds to a minute about a friendly topic. Great teacher, great class to take.
She is great! The class is super informative and she teaches it in an easy and understanding way!
Allison is extremely helpful. The book is only used for the final and the midterm so you can borrow it from a friend like I did. Her rubrics are pretty straight forward. Public speaking can be made easy if you have her she is willing to give feedback and tips. Make sure you show up because it is easy attendance points. Overall easy class.
Dr. Coltharp was an excellent public speaking teacher who I would recommend anyone to take. As long as you show up to class and try your hardest you can easily get a B or higher. She makes class very light hearted and makes going to class enjoyable. Can be a little picky on the grading sometimes.
Professor Coltharp cares very much about her students' success and she tells everyone exactly what she's looking for in a speech. There are a few sporadic tests based on the textbook, but you don't need it much except for group presentations in the Honors section. I like that she makes everyone do impromptus. This was my most enjoyable class.
Professor Coltharp is a very enjoyable professor for a very boring class. As long as you go to class and follow her instructions for speeches you will have no problem with the class. The tests and quizzes over the book are a little annoying, but that is for all Com 115 classes and not specific to her. Overall, very solid.
Prof. Coltharp is a really nice and caring prof. I hardly used the book and still got an A so you can probably just borrow it from a friend from time to time. Fair and clear grading. Class was kinda boring from time to time but that was just the material.
Coltharp is very nice and cares about her students. She's a little strange but you get used to it. The class isn't a ton of work and she's clear about what she wants. If you ask for help or show improvement she'll grade you well. An easy A for public speaking.
Good teacher, not great but not bad either. Pretty average but is really nice and an easy grader.
Discussion based. Laid back and straightforward. Shes really nice.
Overall Professor Coltharp was a pretty average professor. But, she does show interest in helping her students succeed. She also gives good feedback after every assignment.
Grades hard. Show up to class for participation grades. One midterm, one final, and 4 speeches worth more points as you go on. Have to do well on speeches to get an A
Allison Coltharp is very kind and genuinely interested in helping her students learn.
Mrs. Coltharp is AMAZING I had her for COM260, the class is really simple. She mostly uses power points and hand outs that serve at the study guide for the test, learn those, skim the chapter, and the vocab in the book and you'll do great on the test. She is super kind and you can tell she really cares about her students recommend her and the class
Followed each speech exactly as directed and she would still give bad grades, not understanding at all when It comes to outside of the classroom. Would not take again
Loved Coltharp for (honors) public speaking! Creates a great class environment. There's about 4 speeches and then little ones thrown in, plus a handful on quizzes on the textbook (Don't buy the newest edition, any works!) I hate talking in front of people, but this class made it fun.
Prof. Coltharp was an absolute gem for honors public speaking! Very easy to reach and very accommodating if you need extensions or require special circumstances for assignments. If you show up and participate (give it your best effort), you will do well. She is very cheerful and has a positive, professional demeanor. 10/10 would recommend
She is SO boring. Her lectures have no value and you can do better research and educate yourself. You only use the book for exams and she has no explanations for her grades. Attendance is mandatory even if you are sick. She gives participation points for each class. Youre better off taking this course online. Save yourself.
Overall bad experience. Followed every speech to a tee and still received bad grades without any explanation. Very boring class. Would never take her again.
I liked this class, I took the honors section, and it didn't give me any problems at all. Mrs. Coltharp can be a little particular on speeches, but you will learn as the semester goes on. She always asks the class for input on things, we even got occasional days off. She can be funny and personable too which is never bad in my opinion.
Tells you to submit outlines in order to do the speech, won't grade outline in time and you're forced to do the speech blind (hoping it's ok).Tells you your errors, which could have been avoided if outlines were graded. Unorganized, asgmt given/opened late in week.SUPER late grader, book's author repeats themselves.Slides/videos are redundant.
So sweet and a very understanding, interesting teacher
Professor Coltharp is incredible! She is kind, organized, knowledgeable, understanding, and fun. Her lectures and engaging and interactive. She gives good feedback while also recognizing honest effort that students put in and doesn't expect perfection, only improvement. I would recommend her to anyone and would gladly take another class with her.
Great professor! Always gives productive feedback and understands students are people and not just homework machines.
Super kind and cares a lot about your success. Be sure to turn in things on time especially the speech outlines! Keeps class short and sweet and makes sure everyone is as comfortable as possible. This course is really just a few assignments here and there and the 4 main speeches, other than that I think there is only like one easy quiz.
She is a very sweet, caring teacher. The class is participation and discussion based. She does have presentations that you take notes on but most of it is common sense. While there are textbook readings, you can definitely get by without doing them as long as you listen in class and take notes. Love her!
told me I needed to drop the class three weeks in cuz I missed an exam due to being ill and wouldn't let me retake it another day. then after I dropped the class proceeded to email me that I should've talked to her before dropping the class after she had already said I should drop it. lame af
This class was very and she taught it in a way that was easy to understand. Make sure to pay attention to the slides, as most of the test content is from there. We had 3 papers (be aware of any citation mistakes because she takes points off for that), 2 film appreciations, and 3 exams. If you show up to class and do the assignments you'll pass!
Professor Coltharp was very nice and had a great teaching style. She was pretty straight forward on what was needed in presentations and she gave great feedback. She was always great in communication outside of class and her assignments were never difficult with the right preparation.
She is easy to approach and talk to about concerns. She grades fairly for a beginner speech class and makes it very clear what she expects and where changes need to be made. Do not skip class. Participation matters!
You really learn a lot and it's a fun class. Textbook is required but you don't really need it. She grades fairly so make sure you put in the needed work. A lot of the work is just talking with classmates and not a lot of lectures. It's pretty hands-on so be confident and don't be afraid to speak up. Really fun, applicable class.
I took honors COM 115 with Professor Coltharp in the Fall 202 semester. I was not exactly excited about taking this gen ed going into the semester, but Professor Coltharp made the class engaging and not dreadful. I ended up enjoying my class and met a lot of new people that I still talk to.
She doesn't care which edition of the book you get (you can find older versions for free online), and she'll even find an old syllabus so you don't have to hunt for the correct chapters. I honestly never read the book except for one big group project where it was unavoidable. Overall, great class.
Really enjoyed her class, she is big into peer conversation which helped me make a few friends. Exams aren't bad, you could get at least a B on them if you show up to class but is a bit tough on the short response portion. Gives random class writings worth a few points. Would take her again if I could.
All grading criteria are very straightforward for this course. Participation in discussion boards is a large portion of the grade. Prompts were hardly challenging and usually asked students to draw on their own personal experiences. Tests and essays are simple. Follow along with the lecture videos and you will succeed easily.
This professor is easy that's true, but she makes unequal treatment to the students. She tells to drop the classes illogically, comments irrelevant , to sum up, she's easy but not a good professor.
My worst teacher/class experience in the US. I have been in the US since high school and so far couple of years in university until I transferred my credits here to MSU. If you screw up in one of your assignments, rest assured she will hold grudges for it till the end. Despite apologies and promises to improve, low & unfair grades will continue.
Very boring and unhelpful lectures. Very harsh grading (if you forget one tiny detail, half your grade on a 'participation' based assignment gone). Takes points away for no reason, like will name khakis and a polo as a good example of what to wear, then take a point away when you wear just that. Overall just an incredibly tedious class
Professor Coltharp was AMAZING! She is a very nice person. Not only was every single lecture interesting, but she cared so much about what she talked about. She knows her stuff. The class is lecture based with a few papers and tests. Pretty simple and easy to understand. I am not a student who focuses very well but I was locked in on everything!
For this type of class, she is a fine teacher. Easy content, not a lot, but on exams you can't miss details or examples even though it doesn't seem like she would grade harsh. She is a nice person, but lectures can get very boring. A lot of turn and "talk to your neighbor" and "let's hear some examples".
Not too bad of a teacher. she is really nice and shares a fun story at the beginning of class. she didn't give out too many test or quizzes, but lots of speeches. don't miss too much class, attendance is graded
Easy class but so insanly boring. She grades annoyingly hard on the tests even when its so obvious you knew the answer. only 500 points and like 100 of them are participation. basically no homework. 3 tests and 3 essays. take online if you can this class is common sense
Prof. Coltharp was very passionate and knowledgeable in the field. She will share many personal stories related to the lesson and take time for deep class discussions. You will write 3 essays, take 3 tests (includes final, which is not cumulative), 2 interviews, and two film appreciations (in class). Participation and attendance are graded.
One of the best professors I've had. Clear expectations, very understanding, and lectures don't drag on. The textbook is needed, there are a few easy quizzes & it really helps you improve. No points for attendance, but has participation points, so show up. Impromptu speeches about once every 1-2 weeks, but they're low-stress. Generous grader.
The class is graded off of speeches, outlines, reflections, and participation in impromptu speeches. But beware, if your outline is even slightly wrong, you will be given a 50%. The speeches are lenient and she wants to see growth, but make sure you follow all her rules like dressing in business casual when you speak. My speech grades were 95%+.
Professor Coltharp's class is engaging and manageable. While attendance is mandatory, the assignments are reasonable with proper prep. I found unstuck ai helpful for studying alongside the textbook.
Although the class itself is extremely easy (I would consider this more on par with a 100 level course), the professor is often infuriating. She cannot be reasoned with and is quite stubborn, albeit kind. She's a yapper, be forewarned. She had us HANDWRITE an essay IN PEN for an exam WITH EXPECTED SOURCES THAT YOU COULDN'T BRING IN on top of 20 qs.
Honestly, this professor was insufferable. She drags on lecture by talking about personal stories often causing the class to fall behind. You cannot make up exams or quizzes unless you prove your life story to her (hyperbole). The class itself is a real sleeper too. If it weren't for the amazing people I met in the class, I would have dropped it.
The teacher is the worst I have experienced at MSU. She talks too much and brags about things, and makes things unnecessarily hard. I would have taken someone else's class if I knew how terrible her class was going to be. Super slow, boring, and test-heavy.
