Lots expected, but she makes the subject interesting. Will do anything to help you understand. Definatly suggested
Proff. Fernley is witty, well informed, cultured, passionate and will spend extra time helping students understand theories, concepts etc... She is a respectable and open-minded individual, i highly recomend her. Register early!
Worst teacher I've ever had, ruined my SLCC experience. Would never give higher then a C- on any of my papers, but refused to explain why, even in private conferences. Would not clearly explain assignments, and samples given were poorly written. I recommend taking a class taught by any other teacher
Prof Fernley is a fabulous instructor! I highly recommend her.
Allison is a great teacher. She is friendly, witty, highly knowledgeable, and very passionate about the topics discussed. She will be there to help you understand everything if you show interest. She is extremely open-minded, and you'll find her to have a big heart--welcoming you in--as long as you show respect and, most importantly, are yourself.
Wonderful teacher. Loves her subject, and treats her students with respect.
I love her. She helped me improve my writing drastically. I recommend her to anyone!
She bugged me at first, but I ended up really liking her. She is such a nice lady. Just the fact that she gives you the opportunity to rewrite papers helped me out so much! And she genuinely cared to help her students. She was definitely fair with grading, to say the least. Class participartion and attendance is mandatory to get a good grade though
I really liked Allison. There were book assignments that were hell but she knew it and gave us slack and stopped using the book. She opened my mind up a lot and is very helpful.
Allison made the class fun and easy to understand. very flexible with deadlines and gives you a chance to rewrite papers which really helped.
Allison is a good teacher, when I'd misunderstood an assignment (my misunderstanding was partially due to how the assignment was explained) she was really nice about letting extending the deadline for me so that I could finish the assignment. Her feedback on my paper was very helpful in revising. The book was useless we only needed it a few times.
One of the best English teachers I have had in my schooling career. She is very fair with all of her assignments and deadlines, and her teaching methods helped a lot in making me a better writer and thinker. She is also very friendly and shows concern for her students. I highly recommend her.
Allison is a great teacher! The course work was rigorous, and the theory book was difficult to understand and find answers to the questions she asked, but the in-class discussions she conducted were wonderful and she was very good at clarifying anything someone had a question on. If she structures your class like mine, I think you'll enjoy it.
This is a debate class more than an English class. She was often off topic and during class discussions she'd bring up points that were useless to the person presenting. Her suggestions during student-teacher meetings were very helpful, but any class time was a waste. She didn't explain assignments clearly at all and examples lacked clarity.
Great teacher! She is really funny and quite helpful.
Made it VERY easy to get into academic writing. The book she used was the best one Ive ever seen. I dropped English 1010 last year so I know the difference between English teachers and textbooks and can tell you Allison is amazing. If you don't think so you're a naive idiot and I would invite you to go to any other English class, you deserve it.
Great teacher! Shw always has something funny and interesting to say. She is very helpful and easy to talk to. The textbook we used was fun to read and had interesting topics to write about.
Easily THE best teacher I have had in my entire life. She is nothing but supportive and really wants all of her students to succeed. That's not to say that you can pass without doing your work. She is a very challenging teacher, but her challenges are in place to help you grow as a person. It's rare that you get to learn about yourself in class
She is open minded, informative, and helpful. =)
Allison was the best English teacher I ever had. She was passionate, educated, and always willing to help. I would recommend any class from her.
Allison is great, really enjoyable and such a fascinating person with a lot to offer and makes class fun and enjoyable. She makes learning in this class fun and makes it feel like a family! REALLY, if she is available, take her class!
Allison is awesome! She is very flexible with her class. We never truly followed her planned schedule and she was fine with that. Class discussion was always helpful and fun. Allison isn't afraid to act young. I loved having her as a teacher!
She is a very nice, understanding person. She will make arrangements with you if you have an issue, and will try and clarify any problems with the assignments that you might have. My personal issue with this class was how easy it was. I was always bored, and I feel that it is the book she used to teach the class that made it such a drag.
Allison is an AMAZING teacher. She was a lot of fun and could relate to the students in many ways. She really cares about her job as well as her students, and her class is structured in such a way that makes it very effective yet fun. If you have the chance to take a class from Allison, do it!
Allison is a wonderful professor. so great I repeated this class just to have her again. She Is kind, understanding, helpful and willing to go the distance to help you get an A in her class. LOVE HER. Take any class from her! Great Lady, and cares about her students. hope someday she will be in Admin.
Allison is amazing! If you don't really enjoy writing, she makes you love it. If you like writing already, she will make you love it even more! Listen to her connect all of the pieces of her lecture together and really listen to her critisizm because it will make you a better writer!
Allison was a great teacher! Very lenient and was willing to listen to the class on where we wanted to go. Takes the time to get to know students and explains things very well. I would recommend her!
Allison is amazing and extremely helpful. She was always clear on assingments and any changes in the syllabus. She was extremely prompt to respond to any questions as well.
She is wonderful! She is crystal clear on what she wants you to do, & will help you in the process. This is a college English class, so there will be times that you have a portion to read that is more than 3 pages. She is very clear on changes to the syllabus. She gives you a ton of time to write papers. Would definitely take her again.
Far from amazing.
Very personable and understanding teacher. 2850 involves some touchy subject matter but she handles it in a comfortable and welcoming way. I found her funny too. Projects and assignments are interesting and interactive. I recommend her class, you will learn a lot!
SHE IS NICE AND FUNNY, SHE IS CONFUSING AT TIMES BUT SHE WILL CLARIFY HERSELF. A LOT OF HOMEWORK AND PAPERS, BUT GIVES ENOUGH TIME TO DO THEM. SHE MAKES THE CLASS FUN.
Very confusing and impossible to work with. If you have any interest in enjoying an English class, find a different teacher.
I LOVED this professor simply because she was very knowledgeable about the course, and she structures her class very well. Although at times, she didn't follow the syllabus, she always made sure to clarify and adjust. She was challenging, but an fairly easy grade. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend her LGBTQ Studies class; it's the best!!!!
Yes, you have to show up to know what's going on! But otherwise, she is super nice and helpful. I thought she was very accommodating and would love to take another class from her!
Allison is one of the best teachers SLCC has to offer. She is concerned with everyone's education, is fair and generous with the required help needed. She is encouraging, makes you work for your grade, but never lets you down. If I could, I'd take her for all my classes!
Super great teacher and explains exactly what she wants and listens to the students needs and will even set back a due date if she sees people are still struggling. Very happy and exited about her job and about English!
Not clear with instructions, very difficult to communicate with, sample papers had little to no form. Overall, I felt like I learned nothing.
I think in rating her, the best word to describe Allison would be incomprehensible. Her sample papers had misspellings and no form, her feedback was indecipherable, even when asked about it, and she seemed to grade on a whim.
Allison is the best English teacher I have ever had. Some of the assignments are tough, but if you FOLLOW her instructions you'll do just fine. She spells out exactly what you need to do and what she wants. She often had one-on-one conferences and she is always available at the writting lab. If you put in the work its an easy A. I loved her!
This class seemed so promising at the start, but went downhill fast. There is no clarity with what is expected, and feedback doesn't help at all.
I would take all my classes from Allison if that were possible. Fantastic teacher! Cares about what she does and is always willing to help, if you put in the work.
Allison was awesome for GLBT Studies. She really knows her stuff. Her class is structured, but she tailors it to the speed of the class sometimes. She's expects academia, so this was not the simplest course, but if you put in the effort, you'll be well rewarded. I highly recommend her and this course!
Allison is a great professor. She is always willing to work with her students and help them if they every need it. I really felt like I became a better writer because of her class. If you do the assignments as directed, it's an easy A. And on papers she gives you a chance to revise and submit again for a higher grade. Great class, great teacher!
Kind of boring, but very clear and helpful. Always willing to work with you and get your writing better. As long as you do the assignments you will pass. She cares and wants to help you succeed. Not the best teacher ever, but good enough for this class and an easy pass if you put in the work.
Allison was ok as a person, but the class was really pointless. There was no constructive feedback when there was feedback, and there seemed to be no linearity or structure to class. But, Allison is nice.
Allison is a fun teacher and has an awesome personality. I loved her class, but there is a lot of online work and 4 major papers (3-8pgs.long). Very clear, gives outlines for papers, & she lets you revise a paper to get a better grade, which I liked. Over all she is a great teacher and I recommend taking her if you are prepared to work.
After a semester with Allison, my best advice would be to take the class from someone else. She's nice, but the grading seems to be arbitrary, and her feedback proved to be confusing and unhelpful. I feel that if I applied a lot of what she taught I would be a worse writer.
I didn't expect much from an English class but in this course I learned a lot about writing that has already helped me in other classes. Allison is very helpful and all the writing assignments and requirements are spelled out clearly. She let us revise papers and met with us in conferences. Highly recommended.
This course was required but I was pleasantly surprised. I learned a lot about writing that has already helped me in my other courses. Allison is very helpful and lets you revise papers. I also liked the book we used and appreciated having the Canvas site that spelled out everything I needed to do for assignments and papers. Highly recommended.
Allison Fernly was helpful and informative. I loved her. She is clearly a liberal based on her views on certain subjects.. She grades fairly and lets you re-write your paper for a better grade. Very helpful as well.
Allison is cool, but she seemed really disorganized. My biggest issue with her was her lack of clarity. No matter how many times I asked for more information, she just couldn't help. I feel like my writing hasn't improved because if her.
The class was like a high school class dificulty wise. However, I thought much of the material covered was absurd, and Allison flat out refused to help. After talking to other students, it's clear that I wasn't the only one that felt this way. I'd suggest another teacher.
Take from someone else.
Allison was ok.
I loved this class. I especially appreciated being able to choose what I wanted to write about and the textbook was very helpful. Allison is a wonderful teacher who really cares about students and helps you outside of class throughout the semester.
The subject matter of this class is a bit delicate (queer studies) but Allison handled it really professionally. Even though I am not LGBTQ, I learned a ton that helped me understand members of my family and some friends better. The class was always challenging and interesting and I loved class discussions.
I didnt like the class
Allison seemed uncomfortable with much of the material. Sad for such an important class.
Allison was great! But not as a teacher. I hated this class, but thought Allison was cool as a person.
Kind of like a high school English class. But worse.
I didnot like this class
If you like to write and don't have to think about it this is for you. I had trouble keeping up with all the writing. I was getting help and good comments from Allison, but it was just too much to write. I had to drop the class. She's good at communicating but that,s it.
Wow, Allison can be hard to understand sometimes. She wouldn't stick to her rubric with grading, making her marks seem fairly arbitrary, and if you come to her with concerns she gets flustered and won't listen to what you have to say. And that's not just me, there were a few people in the class with this issue. Frustrating.
She's a great teacher who will joke many times with everyone in the class. She understands that the material needs to reach people in a relative way so her assigned readings or movies reach out to different types. You can contact her on canvas pretty easily. I think the only thing hard about her class was the presentations: Ideas n such.
She is the best. Don't take this class if you want to slack off. She will inspire, and push you to do your best and learn a lot from her classes. She will give you all the feedback and tools you will need to be successful if you want to get a good grade in her class you can, you just have to work for it. Which you should because this is College.
This class requires a lot of work. every week there is something due. may be a one page small assignment or a five page essay. you will recieve good feed back from the professor.
Allison has been my absolute favorite instructor at SLCC thus far. She does give a lot of work, but ultimately it is all to assist you in writing better papers, which is the point of the course. Plus she is quite lenient and understanding. She is helpful, kind, funny, and a lovely person to work with. I would take another course with her again!
Very unorganized. I had to beg for feedback on all work, and she could never tell me why I got the grades I got. It all seemed very arbitrary. Getting a 95% on a paper is great, but she never gave feedback on where those extra points went. Class was very boring and nonsensical. Avoid Allison if at all possible.
This was my favorite class this semester. Very smart, kind professor who helped me understand all of the course materials. She was very clear in her instruction and the assignments made sense.
Little to no feedback and very unclear on expectations. I regret not looking for another teacher to take this class from.
We usually had homework twice a week. The Homework is easy so just stay on top of it and turn everything in on time. If you do that youll pass the class with flying colors. You can really tell that she loves what she teaches and is driven to teach her students. 10/10 class
She's a good professor, but a very tough grader. I tried my best in every paper to get an A in here class, and it wasn't an easy class at all. My paper got fixed in the writing center several times, but only got A-. But she gives you good feedback and lectures are great!
Allison rocks. very friendly and helpful
Professor Fernley is a great teacher. She gives great feedback and gets a long well with students. There is a lot of homework required in her class, but try not to take another heavy homework class at the same time.
She is a good professor, but she seems to forget that almost everyone in her class is taking it because it's required, not because they want to be a writer. There is a lot of homework, so hopefully you're unemployed and have no life outside of her class. She is a fair grader and is personable though.
This was a terrible class. Little to no feedback, and the few things that I got were indecipherable. It's not a hard class, about on par with a high school English class. But Allison was beyond frustrating to work with. There's other options, so if you can, try a different teacher.
Allison is a nice person, but her grading is a bit in the ridiculous side. She doesn't grade according to a rubric, or at least doesn't follow one. I went into her office hours and she used the word "verbatim" an alarming number of times as she tried to explain why I lost a handful of points. Very unclear, very unhelpful.
I loved this teacher. She gave good feed back, gave us assignments. We had to follow our assignments through canvas and she had everything on a calendar. She explained what is expected and as long as you follow her course through her calendar and read her feed back you should do great! Because of her, I enjoy writing.
Very unclear in expectations. She seems nice in person, but is totally unwilling to help students. Her feedback was unclear, and when I approached her in person, she made it all even more confusing. Made her grading process seem very arbitrary.
I really liked Allison, but the class was supposed to be an introduction course and it definitely didn't feel like one. There is a lot of dense reading and unless you enjoy that, I wouldn't recommend this class. Allison is a great professor, but maybe take her for another course. There isn't a text book, but she sends you some readings.
Allison had a fun set up and this class allowed me to explore a topic I was not really sure about. I enjoyed spending a few moths researching an area of interest and writing about it. Also I love that she has conference weeks that allows you to get one on one time to go over your paper and allows you to make changes to get that perfect score.
Allison is a great professor and really helped me improve on my writing. We had to write many papers but as expected in any English class; Allison always gives you great feedback on how to improve your papers and will let you re turn it in after you fix things.
