Incredible! She actually made history interesting.

Makes history understanable
She makes history fun and understandable!
can be difficult at time, but a terrific lecturer and makes history really interesting and relavent
Knows her stuff and is a great lecturer, but is very arrogant at times making students feel like crap because its like she looks down on them.
She is arrogant. Thinks she is better than everyone else. You do learn some interesting things from her. She isn't the easiest grader in the world.
I've got two words for you: Fem Nazi! And I am female!!! Sometimes when I made an intelligent comment in class she said I was wrong... other students even came up to me after class and told me they thought I was right. Overall, makes history interesting.

i'm torn. she's a very good lecturer, and is really fun - unless you're on her bad side, for any reason. and she gets to pick why you would be there, even if you don't know. can be scary, and the blunt arrogance can be grating.
Impressive command of subject matter, whether it be Spanish Law, early american civilizations, or Iberian peasant life. Unfortunately the course is tempered with blatant hostility towards men. She is self righteous and arrogant toward her students.
Amazing lecturer (though tends to be revisionist) but she can be very condescending to some students for no apparent reason. Grades hard but not biased. Papers can be difficult because it's difficult to grasp what she wants.
Why is she so angry? What's that chip on her shoulder about? Why is she so against men? Why does she hate students? What is she doing teaching?
A fine lecturer. However, after having 2 classes with her last semester I can only say that she didn't like me for two reasons 1: I'm a male and 2: I'm a Conservative. Those two things are why she delighted in mocking me and why I got C's in both classes!
This teacher was ridiculous. She was definately partial to the girls. Her lectures were unorganized and lacked cohesion. Sometimes she would go off on a tangent about life in the early 80s, and stay on it for the duration of the class. Very boring.
In fact, Poska is one of the top-scholars on the history faculty. Her classes are challenging and she's not there to be your friend. I learned tons from her class on Spain. She will challenges your assumptions-- a good thing!
Awesome lady. Take her if you are a girl, she is kinda partial. But her classes aren't meant to be hard. Really funny lecturer.

Her lectures are very clear and informative. Maybe the men are sensitive to her lectures because she is a scholar of women's history which often doesn't show men in the most positive light.
I am learning a lot in her hist. of spain class. I feel that she is a fair grader and does not play favorites like other people say. I really think she is passionate about what she teaches and I appreciate that!
She is a very hard teacher. Watch those papers!! Her class is very interesting and she lectures well but watch the papers, do not plagerize, however you spell that. she is a very hard greader.

oh that Poska! gotta love the enthusiam and all the talk about sex and her boyfriends. she knows her stuff and isn't shy about it. papers are tough and so are her tests. not an easy class, but somehow her charm wins the day. you have to work really hard just to get a B. for the brave only.
Great teacher. Very funny, loves what she teaches. Makes lectures interesting and discussions worthwhile. Very difficult papers and tests, don't take her unless you're willing to work, but otherwise she's completely worth it. Doesn't play favorites, willing to help. Doesn't mess around.
My sure you write down anything see puts on the board during lectures. They have a 90% chance of showinig up on the exams as identifications. also make sure you read the weekly readings. those will be the essay questions on the exams. watch the papers also she grades those really hard.
Very straightforward. For the papers, just argue a thesis that you can find the most primary materials on, which are the required texts for the class anyways. For the test, you can almost guess the essays and identifications. Talks about sex alot, and likes to point out gender dichotomies.
she's a good lecturer, you will definitely learn alot from her. The material is interesting, so you shouldn't get bored in her class. Her papers aren't difficult as long as you follow her instructions! However,to get an A in this class you must earn an A on every assignment and participate!
Good teacher, clear lectures, speaks very well, has broad knowledge and relates it very interestingly to class.
An excellent lecturer, but the class is quite hard. She doesn't let you get away BS'ing anything, and her tests are fairly tough, but its worth it if you're interested in the subject or think you're up to the challenge. She's willing to help as well.
Awesome
One of the smartest professors. Lectures are interesting and full of information. Class is hard though. You need your A game because she doesnt take fluff answers. She is helpful and sympathetic but don't think she wont get tough on you. Take her class if you are a hard worker.
Poska is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. Very interesting and knows her stuff. Class is very straightforward. All lectures, except once a week when the class becomes a forum. You MUST participate in those forums to pull an A in the class. Do the readings and you'll be fine.
Shes a good teacher and knows her stuff. She can answer most questions and seems to genuinely love what she does. The main problem I have is that she assumes you are no where near as smart as her and will not dodge insulting your intelligence if it makes her look superior by comparison. English essay fluff is actually not accepted. For once.
She is tough but totally hot!
She is really cool. Sometimes the assignments can seem hard but if you talk to her she will help you through anything and give you all need to write papers or do well on the test.
Dr. Poska is so amusing, and a definite fount of knowledge--the woman knows her stuff about peasants and sex, that's for sure. Her papers aren't too bad unless you have no idea what you're talking about, but her exams are difficult--not because you don't know the answers, but because you don't have enough time to write it all down. Take a class with her, you'll learn a lot. But you WILL work your butt off.
Shes the DEVIL If your taking it for history credit.. dont bother. Maybe if you actually want to learn about this crap go for it. Shes really hard and VERY Picky. Grades harder than most English Professors. Lectures are iteresting, but that doesnt help you get a decent grade. Tests seem easy, but her grading is makes up for that.

Although her lectures can be interesting, I would highly suggest avoiding her at all costs, if possible. Do not come to her with a problem, as she will only make things worse.
There's two sides to Poska: the tough, professorial Dr. Poska, and the funny, engaging Allyson with the cute smile. You will meet both. Do not anger Allyson, or Dr. Poska will come out and rip your head off. Both sides are incredibly smart and fantastic teachers. Dr. Poska can be tough on the GPA, but (usually) only if you don't follow directions.
Her lectures are very interesting. However, this does not make up for how hard the class is. She is unclear, which makes assignments and exams even more difficult. DO NOT take for gen ed requirement.
Very hard class. Made me seriously consider, on several occasions, jumping off the roof of the dorm. Spawn of Satan? Maybe. Highly likely.
Her lectures are fabulous but that isn't enough to make up for her brutal exams;essay questions too broad for such short time to answer, etc.Final is killer. She mocks students from other classes in lecture about how they cry to her about her grading-obviously she's a coldhearted B**ch,no sympathy whatsoever.Unclear in assignments.Brutal in grading!!
Everything written in the last comment is true. Sometimes I think she's just downright mean. She's unfair in her grading... mocks her students... very bitter woman.
Guys, read EVERYTHING. Twice. Memorize specific examples for the tests or you will die a little inside as you read every essay question you'll have to bullsh*t. She doesn't f*ck around. Sometimes has an inflated sense of her own self-importance and isn't above putting students down to prove how smart she is. Really good lecturer.
She's difficult, but I appreciate her because she has organized lectures, plans down to the smallest detail... makes class worth your while. I haven't always done the best in her classes-- but participate, come to class, study hard- you'll do fine. Don't take this expecting it to be a GPA booster.. haha.
Okay, so Dr. Poska definitely knows her stuff. She knows when you don't read too, so do it. Put a valiant effort forth. Don't expect a good grade. I don't take her classes for GPA boosters, but you WILL learn some really cool things.
Even though she is tough, I love Dr. Poska's classes! She knows her stuff and makes it interesting. The thing about her being against guys is totally off. As long as you read and make an educated comment or question during discussions, take good notes you will be fine. Don't expect A's for 300 level, possible in 100 level.
awesome, just plain awesome. She really made me rethink my hate for the major.
Discussion format is easy. Say something that proves you read the book and you'll get credit. Her exams are easy; read each book, and cite it plenty of times on the exam essays and you'll do great. Her IDs are tough, it's a crapshoot. She plays favorites, write your papers so they follow her liberal slant, don't use the word mankind in any paper.
She's fun to listen to at first, but so opinionated that it turns into "guess poska's position." Makes fun of how stupid our class is regularly, but if we're all doing badly, perhaps she has something to do with it... It's not too hard to pass, but not worth the irritation of dealing with her.
Do not take this class unless you are actually really interested. Test are very hard and there is a lot of reading. Class is hard but lectures are interesting. Poska is smart but she will bilittle you in front of class if you ask a stupid question.
She is a very hard professor. A person learns so much, but she is an extremly hard grader. Have to write like she wants or else she will deduct points. I never worked so hard a "B' in my life. She is difficult to take when she goes over rough drafts of papers. She is very blunt, and either says your on tract, or you are totally off.
Class discussion and participation graded every Friday. A reading and chapter in her newly published textbook each week. Definitely learned a lot, but don't expect an A without working your butt off (unless you're a natural - not me!). Have her edit your papers before turning them in and take notes on the readings because the final is cumulative!
amazing teacher. she's a great lecturer she teaches a lot. Obviously loves her subject. Grades hard though, but it is helpful
yeah she knows history. yeah she grades tough. but i dont' want to hear how dumb my class is, how ridiculous the rest of the faculty is and how stupid the school is all the time.chill out...you don't have to have such a strong opinion about EVERYTHING and when you do, remember what you say and don't contradict yourself a week later! to be avoided.
First off, if you want an easy class, look elsewhere. Dr. Poska's class is tough! However, she is a teacher that will get you to learn. She was extremely helpful in any and all questions. She answered her emails fast most of the time. She is fun and exciting and knows her material! She was an AWESOME professor!!

Dr. Poska is very intelligent but seems, as previous comments have noted, to have a genuine dislike for nearly all of her students. She comes off as getting a certain pleasure from both showing up her students in discussion and the low grades she gives on papers and exams. Poska knows more about Spanish History than you do and wants you to know it
PARTICIPATE on discussion days!! also go talk to her about papers so she can get to know you better.
definately one of the worst professors that i have ever had. she hated me for no reason. i would ask her a question and she would stare blankly at me. i do not reccommend this class.
If you care about your GPA, avoid like the plague. Getting an A in her class might just kill you. But if you want really great class discussions, interesting insights into historical periods, and thoughtful writing, I definitely recommend her class. But be ready to do a lot of work.
Do the readings (we had seven books), speak up during discussion days, make thoughtful comments. One mid-term, one final, one paper written in three parts, and weekly newspaper analyses. You better know how to read, think and write critically, because she has high expectations. Be ready to work, but I think it's worth it.
not actually more work than other history classes, just likes everything a certain way. tells you how she wants everything done, so just follow instructions exactly. can unexpectedly get pretty mean. I don't think she realizes that she is doing it, so just try to ignore it. She is always willing to help with papers.
Do the readings, speak up during discussion days, make thoughtful comments. Get to know her, she will help you anyway she can. One mid-term, one final, one paper written in three parts, and weekly newspaper analysis. You better know how to read, think and write, because she has high expectations. Be ready to work, but I think it's worth it.
Wonderful Lecturer. Has no people skills & admits that. Heavy on books/papers/tests. Will ridicule you in class & is known for it. Hard grader. Don't take to bring up your GPA. Is not very helpful w/students w/disabilities, listens but doesn't seem to care, gives what is listed on disability letter and nothing more. Very Hard overall.
One of the best professors I have ever had. You will think, really think. Amazing.
Terrible. She marked me a letter grade down on my paper because I came a minute late to class and when I brought this up to her, her response was "a minute late is 24 hours late." Do not take to help your GPA. Not a conventional history teacher.
I have had her for two classes and am taking a third. If you really want to learn, then definitely take her as a teacher. Great lecturer and very knowledgeable. A lot of writing and reading, but if you actually do your work (not half-way), then you'll do fine. NOT an easy A.
I love Dr. Poska. this was my first semester with her and she's definitely one of my favorite professors at Mary Wash, but she is SO much harder than a 2.3. I'd give her a 1.2 difficulty-it is PAINFUL how hard you work and still get B's and C's. But she's FASCINATING and knows her stuff! Take her, but only if you won't be sunk by one B. (Or C...D?)
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This teacher will demean and demoralize you with a smile. Granted some information was useful, in the end it was not worth the aggravation. By far one of the worst professor at Mary Washington. The best advice I ever got from her was "figure it out yourself" that about sums up her teaching method.
Let me begin by saying that Professor Poska is a very interesting lecturer. But she is a ridiculous grader. She provides very little criteria for the assignment itself, but chooses to spend most of the time talking about the format. BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE ON EVERYTHING. She'll mark off points even if the facts are correct. She's mean as well.
Mean. Unhelpful. Boring. Worst professor I have ever had. She should not be allowed to teach. Berates students. Thinks everyone else is inferior. Talks smack about other professors. Take anyone but her.
I've taken Dr. Poska two semester in a row. I can definitely say that she is one of my favorite professors at Mary Wash. She's a social historian and is very passionate. If you want to learn something from a different point of view, take her classes. Great professor. I do have to say that her classes are a bit hard but are worth taking.
I read all of the negative reviews here, but this class was actually the best I've ever taken here, and I LOVE everything about Dr. Poska. There is no doubt her classes aren't easy, but they are NOT impossible, if you work for it. She expects a lot, and will call you out if you aren't giving 100%, but she is NOT mean - she is demanding.
I really loved Dr. Poska. The research methods class is very hard and time consuming, but she was very helpful in her feedback and her expectations for papers were very clear. As long as you are willing to put in the work, you should do fine in her class.
I liked Dr. Poska and definitely found her class to be interesting. But, her class is very hard, so unless you're a history major or have a genuine interest in the subject, I would not recommend taking her class. It's very research intensive, so you need to enjoy the material or it's going to be some what tedious.
She's hard but you will learn so much. She is clear about what she expects and makes class very interesting. She is never dull and has great earrings. As long as you do the readings and attend class you'll be ok.
She is very knowledgeable but tough, she knows what she's talking about, work hard and attend class and participate. Midterms are and finals are tough but study hard and at least do the readings and you're guaranteed a B
Don't take her class, she is not a good professor.
Do not take this Professor she is UNCLEAR. She does NOT stick to the course subject. She is unaccommodating to people with disabilities. Simply put she is pretentious.
This Professor does not give useful feedback on assignments and when you attempt to ask her questions regarding her feedback she gives you blank stares as if she doesn't recall the assignments she has given during the course. Do not take her she is not a nice person.
Do not take this professor she is unclear and does not help students. She does not help you with your work.
This Professor is unclear and demeaning toward her students. She belittles you and makes you feel inferior. She talks about sex for some reason when her classes deal with the late medieval period. Her academic work is unimpressive she should not be allowed to teach.
This Professor is unhelpful, when you try to talk to her about assignments to pretends (pretends, she really knows what you're talking about she just for some reason enjoys being fake) that she doesn't know what you're saying. Avoid her.
This Professor clearly does not care about her students. Don't take her she shouldn't be allowed to teach.
Very, very unhelpful. Very rude. Don't take her.
What a horrible experience. Such a blatantly rude Professor, plus she is so unclear with her expectations. Unclear, unclear! Don't take her unless you want a crash course in communicating with someone that has a verbal expression problem.
Rough class and mean Professor. Stay away from her classes.
Horrible class, professor is so demanding .
Cant say a lot about this Professor because she is so unclear and off topic. She gives really bad feedback that makes you uncomfortable to approach her. I would tell anyone to avoid her classes. Odd lady.
Professor Poska is a very unclear professor, the entire class struggled because she does not give clear instructions. She also pretends to not know the assignments she has given when you ask her for help. Avoid her.
This Professor is not there for her students. Her feedback is sarcastic.
Her classes are hard, you have to do the work to do well and she will be honest and upfront on any feedback or her attitude with you. She will not sugar coat things, which in college she should not have to. Amazing teacher, heck I even picked her to be my thesis adviser as well as taking several of her classes. Great if you want honest feedback.
I took Dr. Poska's Early Modern Europe Seminar, and it was one of the best classes I have ever taken. The class was totally discussion based, so readings were mandatory, but it was not unmanageable. When it came to the written assignments, she was very helpful, and her honesty was most helpful. I would highly recommend her as a professor.
Dr. Poska is a tough cookie. If you aren't a good writer, don't like to participate, and would rather not read, don't take this class. If you are, then it's an Easy A, but only if you're okay with the above things. The class was mostly discussion based, but if you miss class, she is so unhelpful about going over what you missed. Not the worst prof.
She's very unhelpful. Don't take her class and avoid her at all costs!
Throws her grading power around with Essays to switch you to her point of view. Is highly opinionated and does not tolerate it if other people disagree. Favors some students over others. A very bitter, ungrateful person who complains constantly.
You pretty much have to write your papers her way. Have your own argument? Forget it. You can make an argument in the class discussion, she will accept it as if you had made a valid point and not refute it or explain if you are off base. Then when you make that same argument in a paper, she will mark you wrong and just use the word "no" as a reason
Simply put, Poska is a hard grader. 121 is very discussion based. Do not take if you are looking for an easy A. The lectures are interesting and discussions are engaging if you know the topic. She can be very opinionated! You better be able support your stance on something if you disagree with her.
Dr Poska has such a bad rep on this site, and I can tell you why: the people that don't do well don't go to class enough and don't take her instructions seriously. She means everything she says. I took 4 classes with her and every time she pushed me to write better papers. She's a no-nonsense feminist who doesn't hold back, which is why I love her.
Doesn't give you a good grade unless she agrees with your opinion. Super arrogant. No excuses when it comes to attendance policy- not even for a legitimate trip to the hospital.
Not much good to say about this professor. Her feedback isn't of any use whatsoever.
Dr Poska was one of my favorite professors that I took at the University of Mary Washington. She gave me incredible feedback & she pushed me to write better. When I got a bad grade & talked to her she gave me clear advice to help me improve, and I never got below a 95 on any other essay. I'm at her alma mater for my PhD now!
So not compassionate and very mean. Wont give good feedback for your papers unless she agrees with your stance. Not willing to take personal issues into account and doesnt give any help or constructive criticism - its just plain bashing.
Will judge you and not even know you but judges on what you say in class and off of one assignment that should be done how they will do it. Mentions being a professional writer to back why your work isnt good enough. Their way or the highway. NO EXCEPTIONS. Not willing to compromise on anything. Will fail you because they can fail you.
If you have the option to take literally any other professor I would highly recommend doing so. Poska is the rudest professor I've ever had and requires you to excessively visit her office hours despite being extremely unapproachable. She is unclear on grading criteria and her feedback is borderline bashing.
Had her for WGST 101. Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. Gave us a 1 hour lecture on how poorly written our papers were, shared them w/her colleagues, proceeded to try and guilt us for not using her & her friends as sources. She made students cry in class & insulted anyone with accommodations. Told me I should reconsider my major.
She is an incredibly tough grader, but that just means you can't BS anything. She will tear down your argument only so that you can improve it. It's true that her comments on papers aren't very helpful, but she's very clear on what she does and doesn't like. Never take her class for an easy A, but I learned much more from her class than any other.
I for one will admit my effort in this class was lacking. That was, however, in large part because of how I was treated by Professor Poska. The way the syllabus was written did not convey her expectations properly. When I attempted to plead my case and correct her I was met with disrespect. She told me it was my problem and I should drop the class.
I have taking tons of history classes but Dr. Poska's class is the hardest history I have ever taken. She is a extremely hard grader and doesn't give good feedback. You must keep up with the readings and must participate.
I really enjoyed taking the class, I felt like I was learning something new each day. Also, my class was very passionate about the subjects and discussions would go on past class time. However, there are lots of readings, and discussions in class and on Canvas, plus an essay due every 2-3 weeks. Not talking in class enough drops your grade!
