Great teacher who is always willing to help
she knows the subject very well
Made us do a group final.
Really nice teacher, and I learned a lot from her. I would definitely recommend her.
She is very nice, however her 250 class is a waste of time and energy. The group final really sucked because she was so unclear on what she wanted. But if you want a nice teacher and an easy A, she is a good pick!
The text was hard to follow and she doesn't always go over it, but when she does, she does a great job and her handouts help. Tests were very detailed, but she offered a lot of extra credit.
started out slow but picked up pace. knows her stuff. she challenges her students but still makes it easy to get that A.
Mrs. Aguilar is a good teacher, material is easy to follow, offers alot of extra credit , the final is super easy b/c group essay final. Dont worry she gives handouts, for notes and tests. Good A
A GREAT SUBSTITUTE FOR *bleep* GRAY DAVIS. UNFORTUNATELY, SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH FOR HER OWN GOOD=). HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER CLASS. SHE MAYBE BE TOUGH, BUT SHE'S NICE. EASY 'A' CLASS!!=)
Extremely easy, but a little challenge would have better prepared me for transfering. I had to go over a lot of things she did not cover. Also, she has been known to misrecord grades, so save your work. I didn't and got my first B during my last sem.
Aguilar rocks.... Her exams were consistent with the reading and she didn't throw any curve **** on exams. Take her cause she's easy.
This class is so easy to follow. She seems to be strict but she is not at all. The final was the easiest. Take this class, you will learn a lot about enviroment.
Very easy class. Easy to follow and MANY extra credit assignments. Very fun and well organized class. 3 tests, optional extra credit final, easy research paper and all curved. Highly recommend!

many extra credit assignments and grades on curve which makes it even easier
IF you get less than an A- in this class you do not belong in college. With the kind of curve she gives and the extra credit final it would be difficult, even if you put C on every answer, to get less than a B.
This was a hybrid class, so she did not teach the first half. The second half was all personal politics and NO TEACHING. Yet, the tests were never altered to fit her lecture material. I got an A -- and I will never take one of her classes again.
Go for the extra credit opportunities, they are easy points that add up at the end. She's pretty easy and the curve on the tests are great.
This teacher is the best when it comes to wanting a class that you just want to pass, she is so easy no one could fail, not even if you tried, however her class is boring you'll fall asleep, so drink some coffee before you come to class!!=0)
I love her she is awesome! Very easy class and take advantage of the extra credit.
3 test, one paper, and optional final. lots of extra credit. study the highlights in the book that she recommends you get. everything is base on a curve
This class was lame. I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know from H.S. polysci. The work = busy work & the test questions were ridiculously hard & unrelated to anything in the text or lecture. But she curves by a million points so you'll pass.
Teacher is aproachable and helpfull. She lets us interact and really discuss topics.
Excellent teacher !! You get to learn alot especially on the paper you have to write. She will introduce you to new ideas, theories, and the full discussion about current politics.
Great teacher!! Wants everyone to pass, and makes sure they do!
She is a great teacher. As long as you read the highlights you will get a good grade. She grades on a curve, so your chances of getting a decent grade are high. She is also very nice, and good at explaining things. Take her class!
Easy to get a good grade without much work. Class was more like a high school one. I wonder if I will be ready for San Diego State since I didn't have to do much to get an A.
She was super easy. Do the extra credit, you have 3 to choose from ranging from 50-100 pnts, you also have small chances to get extra credit throughout the semester. You have one paper, super easy. The tests look intimidating cause they are long, but if you get the highlights, you will have no problem. Shes very friendly and knows her stuff!

smooth sailing class. she is a bit flighty, but in a funny way. she is really interested in the subject which kind of makes u take interested as well. word of advice, dont slack off on the big paper. tests are relatively easy if u study.
Being in her class gives you a great experience. She is not that extrict nor esay. Not a lot to do but lost of things to learn, and you actually learn because she will drill them into you. Really nice teacher. really helpful and understandful.
Very articulate, to the point of being almost ridiculous. This tone can lead people to think she is a sort of snob, but that is not really the case. She makes comments that shatter this assumption and they make the class fun and interesting. She knows her stuff and explains the subjects well. Good handouts. Study materials need updating. USSR?
I wasn't expecting to like this class before I took it. When I got out, I thought it was a very intresting class, one of the best classes I had taken at SWC. She is not hard or easy, she only makes the class intresting and fair. You will love her lectures.
If you don't read on your own you will not be successful. Lecture consists in watching old videos and finishing class 25 minutes earlier (50 minutes a week, consistently) Lots of materials to read, barely covered in class. As she said, this course is not a regular class, much like a graduate seminar course. I would have taken other PS class instead
Not a good class since it is divided in to two professors, one in one half of the semester, the other the other half. Kind of complicated and confusing.
The class was easy. She is very nice and helpful. Attendance is mandatory.
What an awesome professor! Although her class is not an easy A, one must study each chapter well in order to grasp the material, she explains the concepts clearly and fully well. She is a great teacher, and Southwestern College needs more faculty like her. Just do your part and you'll enjoy her class. I did! I guarantee it.
What an awesome professor! Although her class is not an easy A, one must study each chapter well in order to grasp the material, she explains the concepts clearly and fully well. She is a great teacher. Just do your part and you'll enjoy her class. I guarantee it. Thank you, Ms. Aguilar, for all my learning! I am doing great in law school right now
FOR AN ONLINE CLASS IT IS SUPER HARD! THERE ARE 4 EXAMS WITH 100 QUESTION FOR THE TEST & YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT IN 50 MINS OR LESS OR YOU WILL GET A ZERO! YOU HAVE TO DO A RESEARCH PAPER ON A POLITICAL LEADER.SHE HARDLY RESPONDS TO E-MAILS, SHE IS ALOS NOT PROMPT & TAKES FOREVER TO REPLY. MY ADVICE, DO NOT TAKE HER. I DID NOT ENJOY HER CLASS!!!
There are 3 (300 pages each) required texts that you must read front to back, a 7-page paper on a political leader, and 4 unit tests. There is one final that is not on your main textbook, but on the other two required texts. All of her work (ie: outlines) is a bunch of busy work. I am a good student, but I didn't learn anything in this class.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She is not clear on her tests and DOES NOT give you enough time. 60 mins to do a 100 question test about 4-5 chapters. You have to read 3 boring books. Isn't clear about what she wants. Dings you heavily on the smallest things. Questions on tests were SUPER RANDOM. SUPER unorganized. Kept changing due dates. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She knows what shes talking about and is very good about keeping up with current issues. Buying the textbooks was a waste of money though. Easy yet useful teacher
Ms. Aguilar is just great! her class is fun and she is interesting.
Yea it is true that she is really unorganized but she is a good professor. She gives you chances at extra credit so take advantage. She is really intelligent in her field so if you are confused just ask her questions up front and she will answer them, thats what I did. attendance is mandatory but you can be late because she uses a sign in sheet.
PS-250, Global Futures. -- Class is split, she does the PS half. Difficult teacher. Expects too much out of you and everything must be done to her exact specifications. Wrong article, 1 line too short, she wont accept it. Got a C when i honestly should of gotten a B. Knows her stuff & is very intelligent politically. But strict, be warned.
She is unorganized, but easy A. She will share alot of her personal life, get out of the topic very often, you will not lear alot, but you will get an A. In class you will need to do a couple of essays, 2 test. Textbook is needed for both test. Extra Credit is offer!!! She is a nice teacher
I did not do very well in the class overall, but I have learned alot more I didn't know. You have to attend class every class period to keep up with the information that the class is presented. Have to copy the notes from the board(s) and read the textbooks with the highlighting of the third book. She is helpful in explaining for what she wants.
Very quirky lady, often disorganized. Did not show up for class once no sign or email we just waited outside. Also missed an office appt. Assigns 4 books to read but you can pass without reading them. Picky about papers, but she will review your rough draft.
She is a great professor! We get to discuss current events and give our hypothesis's and debate one another. She has her positions but open minded and let's you speak your mind, but you must substantiate your claims. I also had her the semester prior and she is a very sympathetic and caring person. Just do EXACLY what she says for the term papers!!
gets you interested in the topic, down to earth. Nice lady very picky on essays if the indents are off itll lower you grade. Doesnt fail you, shell just drop you which I like.
Very strict on Essays, however not very good in explaining that when she says maximum 2 pages, she really means 2 full pages to the last margin and no more.Very strict on numbering categories.Explains things very well and is an easy class apart from the essays.Yet,disappointed with her attendance.Late to class and has already been a no-show twice
She is NOT picky about essays, she just expects you to have some semblance of literacy and an ability to follow directions. Actually, I felt she was too lenient because she lets students rewrite sub-par papers. People who can't write should pick a different major; better be good at math! Anyway, very nice lady who really cares about her students.
NICE STRAIGHT FRWARD TEACHER. WHAT U SEE IS WHAT U GET IN SYLLABUS, SHOW UP, PAY ATTENTION, DO WORK, NO SHORTCUTS OR HARDSHIPS. ALTHOUGH I ENDED UP GETTING A B+ IN HER CLASS BECAUSE SHE DOCKED ME 20 POINTS IN AN ESSAY THAT I FORGOT TO WRITE A TITLE FOR WHICH I THOUGHT WAS RIDICULOUS GIVEN SHE LET STUDENTS REWRITE WHOLE PAPERS AFTER SUBMISSION.
Really good teacher, easy class, just go to the classes, ask a lot of questions! For clarification of due dates and length of essays especially! (Syllabus will say one thing and her in class another). 3783
Shes alright. She lectures AT you, like talking to an audience. Not too engaging but she does give a fair share of videos. Lots of facts and you must be up to date to have a conversation with her, she knows names, dates, people etc... Only grades based on 3 long essays. No hw or quizzes. Expects you to know about the subject coming & class is chill
Her class is an easy A if you literally follow EVERYTHING on the syllabus and ask questions if you're confused. She doesn't want her students to feel like her class is easy so she tries to be super strict on the one essay she assigns. She's not engaging just pretty much acts like this class is lecture only. not much participation
Very unorganized and unclear. Extremely fickle about essay format despite any effort made to create a concise and coherent response to her random prompts that have very little to do with anything she lectures about in class. Overall if Political Science is your major, i would strongly suggest to take the class somewhere other than Southwestern.
Overall, a knowledgeable professor. If you do everything as she asks and turn in all the work, it's an easy A. She grades on MLA format and whether you completed the assignment. If you ask questions, she does answer them but she's never there for her office hours. Pay attention, read all the course material, and ask questions! Class is all lecture.
too picky about mla. can't fix paper, had a huge grade drop because of this.
I got A's on every test in class. I read the two books required for the essay final test. Then, I made a 3 page research paper as she commanded. But she decided to put me a ZERO for both works, failing me automatically. She is not clear on what she wants. She argued that I didn't follow her instructions, but she doesn't specify how she wants stuff.
The 8 week online class was demanding. The professor graded each of the unit exams on a curve. She allowed a rewrite on the require research paper so that you would learn and write a better final essay exam. You have to follow directions.
Over all it was an interesting class. If you attend the class, ask questions and follow the instructions on the essay everyone should be able to pass her class. She even gives you an outline of what is expected on essay. If you can't follow instructions then you do not belong in her class or in college.
I barely passed this class. If i failed it was my own fault. I did find it very interesting and en-joyful. Before you write your paper. Take notes on how she likes your paper to be written. No header, no wasted space, paragraphs set up according to how she tells you and MLA citing.
terrible instructor.. the final was 200 questions and not in the least bit easy..
too picky with MLA on her paper. would not even give partial credit. instead, gave 0/200
As you may see the red-faced feedback from my peers below, you may realize that she is not your everyday professor. I took all of the PS classes that the college had to offer, but only with her I struggled. If you like to learn and being practical about it, don't take her. If you only like to follow directions as a follower, go ahead.
Her harsh teaching methods would be understandable at an upper division university course, not at a community college, with a 104 course. Don't take her. If you are taking more classes , don't enroll. It's pretty complex for a 104 course
Bad. just bad. i hated going to class. the lectures arent enjoyable at all. The material is ok but overall,if i knew about her beforehand, i would not have taken her
Very strict about attendance, MLA format and her tests are very difficult. However, I find that if you are a committed student that sticks to the readings and lectures you will find yourself with a decent grade. She's extremely thorough about essay instructions and what to expect on tests, so there's no excuse if you study hard. Challenging class.
Very strict with MLA format. Hard to understand when given a task. The final of 200 questions was a lot for just 2hours. She gave us seconds to answer each question. Don't take her class!!!!!
Shes an overall good professor very direct and strict with MLA....other than that if you follow instructions and meet all deadlines the class is an easy A....makes political science interesting, i would take her again
Professor Aguilar is a great educator and really tries to make each lecture interesting; she does not hesitate to incorporate real life and current political news into her lectures. I have take her political science classes three times now and have benefitted from her strict and fair method of teaching. Ideal for proponents to a 4-year institution.
Professor Aguilar s'international relations course is quite interesting. I took this course in the spring of 2012. Im not sure if the course outline is the same, but she gives 4 papers in total, in which will be granted a grade. Her class feels like a uni class lecture, no hw just papers. Do the papers well, get an easy A!
Really great professor for anyone who cares about getting into a good four year (I'm talking top 20 schools.) You MUST read, take notes, and keep up with current events. I wouldn't recommend it if you're not a social science major (polisci, business, anthro, etc.) She is really strict but kind. You can tell she cares about her students.
Professor Auguilar's class is not the easiest in the world, there are tough assignments and heavy reading associated with much of it; but hey. we're in college! thats how its suppose to be, high school is over kiddies, this is what the real world expects of you.
Great teacher, seems very passionate about the subject. Very strict on MLA format when writing essays. Easy quizzes online, no major test through the semester. Fairly easy final allowed to use notes, textbooks, and handouts.
She's cool, I got A, here's how: ask her how she wants the assignments, good writing "a must", do all extra credit, cite lecture stuff 4 papers, ask 4 help, avoid arguing, B respectful. Learned lots about US Govt, let her know if you're missing class, read CA book you'll need it 4 d final exam& ask 4 more time, student learning ctr is life saver
Great teacher, NOT EASY, if you're lazy she's not the professor for you, and if you're lazy you also shouldn't be in college. She's very complex as is her homework and tests and essays, very much worth the hard work, she grades tough but gives you the chance to fix it and if you go to her office hours she will give you full credit. REAL TEACHER
I don't understand all the hate towards Professor Aguilar, she makes the assignments very clear, it's not her fault that most people in her class have no idea how to write a paper, her instructions are crystal clear. She's there for you to make any corrections to your paper before it's due, don't turn in garbage at the last minute and expect an A.
Probably one of the hardest classes I have taken. Exams are 100 question with only 60 minutes to do it (you do that math). Most of the the notes have NOTHING to do with the exams. I am not a lazy student and I wouldn't recommend this class. I'll study, go over the book, and rewrite my notes and still not receive an A on an exam. Frustrating.
This is an online class and she is very bad at communication. The 2nd half of the class she just stopped replying to her email. Her tests are ridiculous with 100 questions in 1 hour and her notes she provided us to study had nothing to do with the test. Avoid this class!!!
you WILL need write down everything on the board you WILL need to print out all the handouts must buy 5-6 books-- all which will be used for 2-4 weeks max 100 question test in ONE HOUR exam questions are based on one book, and will be about the most random facts in the book BEWARE!
I do agree, she is a tough grader. If you don't follow her guidelines you will receive a 0 on the assignment & may have to do an alternative assignment. There was about 6 online quizzes, and 2 papers, and a final. Don't procrastinate and put some effort and you will do fine in the class
Please avoid this teacher, not worth the disorganization/unguided lectures. DOES NOT provide power points, go over all info that will be presented on test, and interact with class(looks at walls while lecturing,AWKWARD!) 100 Q exams 60 mins. extra credit not worth the time&effort. nice & gives unsolicited life advice. 4 exams, 1 essay, 5 textbooks.
The tests are very hard
Professor Aguilar is very specific on what she wants, if you follow her guidelines you will pass. The test are pretty hard, but if you do the work and find some peers in the class to study with, you will do fine. Show up, do the extra credit and study for the test and you will pass.
I gained a lot out of this class, Definitely learned a whole bunch covering my major. I think Ms. Aguilar is very knowledgeable. She allows extra credit and allows you to revise assignments. Trust me you will revise, if you're willing to work you will do well if you're lazy or have trouble reading don't take this course.
Prof. Aguilar is great and has really prepared me for my time at SDSU. I am a political science major, and I took her for all of my classes. She is a bit more challenging that other professors, or so I have heard, which is understandable. Easy doesn't always mean better and that is the case here. If you put in the work it will pay off at University
She is very strict when grading papers. She wants it in a certain way or no full points. She does allow revisions for the student to receive full credit. Her class consist of mostly lecture and some videos. When having quiz/test on blackboard, she doesn't allow going back to the last question. Note, I took the intersession class in January 2017.
The class seemed more like a micromanaging lesson than anything else. We were only graded on essays, and while she would look over them for you, by the end she would just basically dictate what she wanted you to write. Even if I didn't agree with what I was writing, it was what she wanted to hear/read.
Aguilar is a very conservative in appearance. She is clearly a professional. Her grading criteria is CLEAR. She goes over the 5-10 page syllabus over the first week. In her world, there is not such thing as half credit or 90%. You do it correctly. All assignments other than test will be perfect scores or no score. She offers re-dues and xtracredit.
Was a PS major until I took agui
She is very intimidating the first day. As long as you pay attention and take decent notes you will pass. Not a ton of studying is needed, just the usual. She gives a TON of extra credit which is the reason I got such a good grade. Easy to work with and a great teacher!
If Aguilar was "CLEAR" in her instructions no student would have to perform, at a minimum, three re-writes. If she was an easy/good professor, she wouldn't have to float students with extra credit. If you doubt me on this, ask yourself why her review page is restricted.
We had 60 minutes for a 100 question test. The physical 101 class had it worse: 200 questions in 120 minutes. Why? Why indeed.
The one exam we had did not have very intuitive questions. You basically would have had to memorize the entire text to get anywhere a decent grade. From my experience, she never consistently followed MLA formatting. What was right in one essay would be wrong in another.
She is brilliant, educated, and tough. It is an honor to be taught by her. But GET READY TO WORK FOR YOUR GRADE! 1 midterm, 1 term paper, and 1 final. May or may not allow you to revise. FOLLOW HER INSTRUCTIONS AND SYLLABUS. Visit a tutor and HER OFFICE HOURS. Ask questions, if you're a true PS Major you will respect her craft for the field.
Aguilar makes you work for your grade the same way your alarm clock makes you work for your sleep. It's just a daily inconvenience, and you'll be happier the day you no longer have to hear it.
Most lectures are based on the assigned reading from the textbooks, so if you are caught up you will pass the class. Tests are worth the most points in the class, it is important to do very well on them the first time. However, she offers an extra credit test that can replace one of the lower test scores. Tests are open book and open notes. Easy!
We weren't allowed to use notes or books on our exams. We only had two, and both times the questions seemed unnecessarily specific, like when you were in high school and those very specific questions were put into exams to make sure you did the readings. So instead of a general understanding of the material, we were needled for the specifics.
This was my first PS class, so when she gave me back my paper covered in red I welcomed the feedback. But when I made the changes, she still sent back covered in red. If her grading is dependent upon her mood of the day, then it's not objective. Moreover, it isn't reliable.
Learn a lot. I liked that students got to choose the articles for the final exam instead of the professor assigning the articles. Allows revisions on essay papers.
She has a great attitude and always welcomes everyone in the class, shes very lenient on attendance, lets you use library books, class lectures, class notes and videos shown for the homework which is literally 2 essays and 1 easy final. She also offers extra credit but its not needed. She only gives out As in class & will not let you fail.
Attend class, take lecture notes and keep up with with readings and you will pass the class. Extra credit is available. She allows revisions and provides feedback on the only 2 page essay along with a revision checklist to keep you on track. Several on line quizzes.
I took this class because I needed the social science credit. Might be different if it's your major. She was pretty intense during the first half of class, but seemed to mellow out. Only way to get an A on your papers was to visit her office hours. Unfortunately, my schedule wouldn't allow it. Kind of unfair in my opinion.
This was an 8 week class with 8 modules. Buy the textbooks right away and do the 20 textbook outcomes for the American Government section of the class because they are worth lots of points. Responds to questions right away.
Go to class and follow directions. She is very helpful and cares about students.
Directions for assignments were clear. Helpful reminders kept me on track. I had health issues during the class and the prof worked with me. Nice person.
Class is organized with the Baradat/Phillips book in the first 4 weeks and the Amer Govt and California books in second 4 weeks. No essay.
Professor Aguilar i s very organized. Shes starts class on time and makes announcements at the beginning of class. Very knowledgeable, a nice lady and keeps her office hours. Take her class.
Very professional and nice person in general. Yes, she makes you work for your grade, but as long as you read and do the at-home quizzes you'll be fine. LOTS of opportunity for extra credit, so take advantage!! I also like that she always reminds us of upcoming assignments & due dates. I really enjoyed her class in general.
She's very nice but you will be doing a lot of work for her class. She breaks up the class with 3 different books. The first half of the semester is chapter reading with quizzes. The second half is from a different book and you have to turn in written responses. START THESE EARLY. She gives out a fair amount of extra credit.
Lectures seemed pretty sterile, and didn't really allow for interaction. Most days she'd just stand up front and speak at us for the 90 minutes. Not bad, but not engaging. Re-writes are a must for essays, but she puts more emphasis on length than content.
You learn in Professor Aguilar's class. Fantastic professor!!!!
The professor is very helpful. Class is based on points and there are on line quizzes based on the textbook. Starts class on time.
Prof. Aguilar is a great professor & I greatly enjoyed taking PS 102 with her! She provides many easy opportunities for extra credit and the online quizzes are super simple as long as you do the textbook reading. She does have strict guidelines for homework, but it is definitely doable :) Great class overall and really enjoyed her a lot!
Class moves fast because it's 8 weeks long so need to keep up with assignments. If you contact the professor she will get back to you right away. Not a poli sci major but learned alot.
Classes just felt like she was lecturing at the room. If the students weren't there, she'd probably wouldn't even notice. Exams require you to parrot back what she wrote on the board. Essays are wrong until she arbitrarily says they're right. Not sure what I wanted out of the class, but this wasn't it.
I have taken Professor Aguilar for other classes PS 101, PS 103 all based on points. She is very knowledgeable. Points on group takeaways, individual work, in pairs are in class, but need to attend class. No textbook
Take her class! Professor Aguilar makes the class interesting with lectures and different assignments. Be on time for class. Allows revisions.
some lectures were alright. Prof is kind of full of herself and micromanaged our essays. Just a tedious class. Won't take this prof again.
Professor Aguilar has quizzes online based on textbook. The only test not online is the final. Points given for in class assignments having to do with lecture. Checks all assignments. Good class.
Great professor. However, she can be unclear when it comes to assignments. She will tell you exactly how to do the assignment, and once youve completed it, shell want something completely different. Its frustrating, but if you have patience, youll get an A. Full credit or no credit.
On line classes were the only PS 101 sections Professor Aguilar taught this spring semester. There are lots of announcements reminders. Can use the reserve textbooks in the library.
Loved taking her classes as a polisci major! She is strict about how she wants things done but the assignments are fairly easy and if you put in the effort there's no way you can you fail. She literally holds your hand to make sure you DON'T fail. If you ask her for help she will go above and beyond to make sure you feel confident about your work.
Never cared about politics before this summer class. Professor made the 7 week class very interesting now I want to know more. I may change my major to political science.
I got an F on an 8 page assignment just because I did the formatting wrong. "no half credit" she said. went from an A to a D for that one assignment. watch out.
She grades on a pass or fail basis. There is no partial credit for assignments, and if one thing is off with your formatting, you will get a zero on that assignment. Her online course has a lot of grammar and spelling issues, and is full of outdated information, making the class confusing. Don't take her class. You will regret it.
Her grading scale is unclear. She requires you to buy three different textbooks for an 8 week course. World not recommend her class.
Do not take this class, if you enroll in a class and the professor is TBD and then find out it's her, drop immediately. I enrolled in the 8-week course and the class starts off fine, but there are a few assignments that are Credit or No Credit and they're essays. 3 Books for this short course and 1 of them you only use for the final. Don't take her
Don't be fooled by the reviews! She does give a lot of work, but if you put the effort and follow all directions like she asks, you'll be fine. There's definitely a lot of reading you must do to pass. I've never been into politics but the books she assigned were interesting and so informative, she also grades fast. I recommend her!
Very easy class as long as you do assignments. Really nice professor!
beware of the term paper. Provides zero rubric and is an EXTREMELY tough grader for this assignment. Im haunted by it. As far as the rest of the course her canvas is confusing and unclear. Very particular for no apparent reason.
Professor gives immediate feedback on assignments and answers questions right away. Course is based on points so do the optional extra credit!
An amazing class 1 Midterm, 1 Final and 6 Quizzes. Your attendance isn't mandatory, but everything we do in class is considered extra credit. She grades off of a point system which makes the class easier to pass, and the best part is all quizzes are via canvas with two attempts. Overall, a great instructor !
I got an "A" because I attended class, read everything and submitted everything on time. I followed directions.
Proff. Alma is the BEST!!! she PROVIDED us resource to the textbook through the library,So I didnt have to pay for the books. Shes extremely clear on whats expected and due throughout the course. Do it right and you get FULL CREDIT, super easy cause she legit tells u whats expected. SHE cares and is teaches you a lot! Also gives extra credit!
I took her class on winter intersession. Before taking her class I didn't like politics and political science at all and after taking her class I kinda got into it. I had a great time in her class. She is open minded and cool and there's room for discussion/debate about topics so you should be okay even if you don't agree with her.
Taking this class online she send out A LOT of announcements of information we can easily find else where. The information on the announcements is inaccurate to what the course actually reflects such as due dates she will tell us are off from when the assignment is actually unlocked making it seem quite unorganized and all over the place.
The very worst ! You make 1 mistake & you get 0 for the assignment. Too much stress in all her classes! Grading policy is unfair. Not to mention the final exam paper has so many instructions. 1 mistake 0 credit. How is this fair? Especially in these circumstances that all was changed online! Not good when youre transferring! She wont listen !
HORRIBLE! Do not take this Professor. Any Professor with Tenure Status is impossible to bring concern to College. Classwork is all over the place NO STRUCTURE AT ALL! COLLEGE COUNSELORS DO NOT HELP THEY ARE ALL FRIENDS.
Just don't.
This teacher has been the worst I have ever had. I had to work hard to get an A. Unfortunately she is an inconsiderate person, she is not interested if you talk to her Dean, she is not interested in anything. She is only interested in you doing her assignments as she says, but if you make a mistake ANY SMALL MISTAKE!!! she gives you 0.
I had Professor Aguilar for all my poli sci classes. She is a good prof. This class like all the others are based on points.
You can expect to interact more with the syllabus than with her. She posts important assignments that are either full credit or no credit at all in which she grades the format instead of the content. You need to buy up to 3-4 books. She is not good at teaching online classes and she does forgive technical issues. If you want to learn, avoid her.
She will give you 0 points if you make a single mistake on the format for an assignment. When you email her she always redirects you to the syllabus instead of answering your questions. Her quizzes have "fill in the blanks" questions in which you have to guess the exact words for something she did not teach. You have to teach yourself. Don't do it.
By far the worst teacher I have ever taken. She has a grading system of credit or no credit out of 80 points I received 0 points on an 8-page writing assignment just because my right margin was not straight. I got the same amount of credit as someone who didn't even do the assignment just because of a format error. Went from an A to a C
I really regret taking her class. She's really strict with her assignments and really unfair. If you make one small mistake or do not follow her format, she will give you a 0. She also a tough grader. She also never helps you, she never answers your questions, she just tells you to read the syllabus.
The class was 9 weeks. Lot's of reading. The prof allowed revisions on assignments. I followed directions and got an A.
She assigns a lot of reading and vague assignments, it isn't the worst thing if you pay attention and mark a planner. However, in terms of content, she is just very biased on one end of the political spectrum, which isn't good for actual learning. Lectures turn to rants, and nobody wants to hear that, She grades tough, overall the class is a hassle
Read the textbook and you're fine, but the way she grades is absolutely hideous. Make one mistake on formatting, you'll get ZERO points- the same as not even doing the assignment. Unorganized and the guide is shown one time. Once. Don't bother emailing her, she'll send you a one-sentence response that doesn't answer any questions you might have.
Were in a pandemic and she literally gives the most vague assignments and doesnt is really bad at explaining what is needed to do. Gives 0s for formatting issues which she only explains how to do with a compute (I dont have.) She gave me a 0 and sent a class email because apparently I plagiarized everything. (Spoiler alert: I didnt) 0/10.
She's very clear on her expectations which pushes you even further as a student to get things done. I enjoyed working in her online section of PS 101 and I hope to take her again for PS 103/104. She taught me how to write so much better and more formally.
Alma does not respect students' hard work, and really only grades major assignments based on how you format them (and will refuse to change her mind/your grade even if you talk to her dean). I highly recommend anyone who cares about effort and quality in their work to take any other professor. Alma is by far the worst professor on campus.
I have a lot of issues with this professor. To start off her lectures most of the time have nothing to do with our exams. Tough grader and isn't clear with her grading criteria. I've asked her for help a few times through email and she never answers my questions. If you are not happy with your grade don't bother asking her to change it bc she won't
She the most opinionated teacher Ive ever met that teaches poli sci, and will lecture about anything that isnt about the course material. She is an absolute joke when it comes to grading and will score you the lowest grade despite your best efforts. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS NOT WORTH THE CREDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
This professor does not care about anything and is rude to students. She rants on about subjects that are not on the test. she is a super tough grader and does not make her instructions clear. She also has horrible pacing when it comes to assigning papers. we had to do 8 one pager essays over 9 weeks which is fine but the next week we have to do 5.
She will literally let one of her students contract COVID-19 and still want a fully written rephrase of the textbook. THIS IS A WARNING DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ANY OTHER CLASS PLEASE DO SO. WORST PROFESSOR EVER
This "Professor" is the WORST. I can not express how awful she is. Her lectures are so opinionated and for a political science teacher she is not well informed. She is so RUDE. She does not like being wrong and it hard for her to admit it. She kicked me out of zoom for not having my camera on.. and then made an assignment with no announcement.
By far the worst professor I've had so far. If you are able to take another professor PLEASE DO SO! She provides no actual feedback and is super though on grading but will never actually tell you what is wrong with your work and will just tell you to look at the syllabus.
She's one of those people who's cool as a person but not as a teacher. She has her own format for certain assignments and if you get something as simple as the way you type the header in the wrong order you get 0 marks. I wish I was joking. It's an "All credit or nothing" situation and it's a points based class. Not the greatest combo.
Professor Aguilars class is challenging but very informing. It is possible to receive higher than a C grade but you do have to put in the work. Its not an easy class but you do get a lot out of it.
This is baerly the second week of spring 2021 semester and she doesn't say much detail about the homework or the discussions so I decided to drop off from her class. She really sucks as a professor I recommend to find someone else who really helps you
Professor Aguilar is very knowledgeable about politics. I took her PS 101 class last semester and now her PS 102. I am thinking of changing my major to political science. Follow directions for assignments and rubrics and you will pass the course.
Definitely wouldnt suggest taking this class, especially with Prof. Aguilar. Shes one of those teachers who arent quite understanding when it comes to outside circumstances when turning in assignments or taking tests. Especially right now with COVID gives her a bigger reason to not understand outside factors to why you werent able to complete work
DO NOT ! The textbook learning outcomes are B S, if they were not in the exact format she wanted you would receive a 0. I forgot to put the chapter & week at the corner & i got a 0!! Her final exam is ridiculous!! 200 Qs in 2 hours? She talks too much during class, never heard a students voice. I had a 89% grade, couldn't finish the final & failed.
Took all her PS courses (no choice) same problems. Lectures are just her talking for 2 hours straight to the camera. Final was nonsensically complicated, complete disaster. Don't bother asking for help on anything, she'll say "Refer to syllabus" or make an example of you in class. Zero empathy for students. Waste of time, don't do it.
The 8 week class is well organized. Lot's of reading, but expected since is a short class. Professor Aguilar replies to questions right away and is helpful. I plan to take PS 102 with her so that I can use the book outcomes.
This class is very difficult because she grades based on you meeting the strick incredibly detailed list of demands for each of her assignments. She gives no lecture, only uploads YouTube videos and a number of handouts. She cares mostly about you following her guidelines than content.
Took her over the summer for PS101 and now for PS103/PS104 and although there is a lot of work in her class, she's very clear on what she expects from her students. I put in a lot of work for this class and im sure thats why i received the grade i did. if you're a lazy student i do NOT recommend taking her!
I definitely did not appreciate this professor or her class. Her assignments are challenging and she doesn't give enough time to complete them. She doesn't work with you and for zoom your camera HAS to be on or she'll kick you out. She doesn't know how to be accommodating and she is very very opinionated. Pls don't take her class friends.
She makes Outcomes due at 8 rather than 11:59. I got a 0 on one and a 30/80 on another. She grades hella hard. She said I needed to do better on the assignment.
She is very clear from the start about what she expects, but she expects it for robots, not humans who make human error. There is no space for that in her class, she is absolutely no help to her students, she shouldn't even bother having office hours. She cares more about the format than content. DO NOT TAKE HER
It is not about "Lazy student" or "I got an A because I followed directions" it is about the way she accepts no mistakes coming from students. I followed directions, uploaded the assignment, received a 0 because it showed incomplete from her end, I provided proof I did complete the assignment and it showed from my end. I still got a 0. JUST DONT !!
Before I took Prof Aguilar the reviews here scared me. Shes actually not as bad as everyone says. Her expectations are clear. There is a lot of work but I found it to be very fun and interesting. When I had an issue with an assignment she was very responsive and helpful. She seems too stern at first but shes very nice. Def taking her for PS104!
She is an interesting character to say the least, I got an A and usually do but was in constant fear of receiving anything less than I deserve. She took off nearly 20 points off an assignment because my name was on the wrong side of the paper on 2 and 1 with no clear reason as to why it wasnt perfect. If you enjoy stress, or a PS major, perfect!
Class is passable if you follow her intense guidelines, but I do not recommend students who work afternoon shifts to take this class because she closes assignments and extra credit at 8PM. Some assignments are only open for 2 days or less so its not flexible like other online courses. You need ALL 3 textbooks for this class to pass.
Didn't learn a lot do to lack of communication with teacher.
Don't waste your time reading all these. Don't ever take any course taught by this teacher. Her final is worth 200 question with only 2 hours to take it. All her assignments have over the top guidelines for completion. If one is not followed you will get a 0 no questions asked. She reminds me of the grinch form Christmas, except worse!
I 100% agree with everyone here. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She had us do 8,6, and another 6 page paper and all of which we HAD to use Microsoft word. If you miss a very minute detail on formatting (I missed ONE line on 1/8 page) she will give you a 0. In her comments she didnt even talk about the content of my work but rather the onelineImissed.
Aguilar is a great teacher and was very responsive. If you follow directions you wont have any issues taking her course. A lot of people dont like her because they just dont follow her directions and say shes mean. Just follow the rubric! You will get the hang of it and you will definitely pass. Easy A in my opinion.
See the thing is the class & assignments are easy to do. But when you encounter a system issue in canvas and it compromises your assignment and you miss 100 possible points and the teacher doesn't care to help out--it's an issue. Even the dean saw the system issues and she still did not care. I could have a 96% versus a 85%--
Her layout for assignments are so ugly but if you follow it, you are guarenteed a good grade. I had an issue with the site not letting me submit an assignment and she contacted canvas on my behalf and got it fixed. Lots of work but the articles she provides are very interesting and insightful. Shes really nice just give her a chance.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME TAKING THIS CLASS. Literally no communication. She says shes there to help but is of no help at all. You literally have to spend 4+ hours on assignments and 8+ on midterms or final exam. Shes very strict in her grading criteria and a minor defect will give you a 0. She is not a compassionate/ understanding person. Just dont
Had to plan ahead for assignments. Posted reminders helped. Class was 8 weeks all online. The class was interesting.
Took her for intercession. Let me tell you there were lots of assignments but if you follow the directions you will get credit. Quizzes and final were straight forward from the books. HEADS UP do not have Monday plans she has a 4 hour window open in the morning for some assignments which was not cool, if you are working you will miss those HW.
This professor is very stressful to work with. Incredibly strict in grading and most of her assignments while easy, are just unnecessarily tedious. Shes the only poli sci professor that gives basic classes most of the time, but if you can pick another teacher, do it. Save yourself the stress.
Keep up with reading of chapters and if you need more points optional extra credit is available. Quizzes were based on chapters. Don't miss a quiz. Interesting government class.
Her grading system is odd. I had an A in the entire semester I received As on tests including assignments. When it came to the exam, it was 200 questions and timed. I didn't finish the exam . It brought two letters grade down .she seemed to have no compassion when I addressed it. Share if you had similar issues.
Class was organized with quizzes and final. She gave feedback right away on all the assignments and there was optional extra credit if you needed it. Grade for summer class was based on points.
If you forgot to add a coma in a compound sentence, you would fail. I took her twice as a professor, and each class became more stressful by the semester. Take another course.
Had her more than once. Just as strict. She will fail an entire paper, if you forgot to add a heading on a page, or a comma in a compound sentence. Take any other possible poli sci professor. Save yourself the stress. No extra credit, no rewrites. Never responded to my emails for help. Only in class.
Do your final exam eight days before. Or, drop from the class, and find another professor. She purposely checks for mistakes on work, and never leaves complimenting advice. Just removes scores relentlessly. Contracting any disease will not change her mind.
She didn't care when exams crashed, or if a dean recommended a change in grades. Only if the number of salty reviews increased online.
Study eight days before a test. You can fail for studying less than those days. If you do plan on cramming the last minute, you need at least 10 hours to get a 70% on the final. When it asks for five paragraphs, write fifteen.
Finish homework two days before the due date. All the tests are due at 9 in the morning, not at midnight.
You have to pay for at three textbooks. You have to be online the entire zoom or you're marked as absent. If you don't capitalize one starting sentence of a paper, or a period, you fail the entire assignment.
From someone who took her classes more than twice, it gets more strict. Find another course, or another professor in the same field. Your entire semester would benefit.
The second hardest class to take at community college, besides statistics, and an English course under Kellie Miller.
Don't skip class. Don't procrastinate. Her final essays take over 10 hours to finish. She looks for mistakes on any work. She failed an entire assignment over missing one comma. She is not accessible to communicate outside. The worst thing about her final essays are they are due in the morning, NOT MIDNIGHT. I've taken her THREE times.
Awful. You can contract a fatal disease, miss one period in one sentence for a paper, get in touch with a college director to to try to fix an unfair grade, and still fail.
If you miss a class, she drops points. She looks for mistakes on every assignment, and if you miss even a comma (,) she fails an assignment. Almost wasn't available that often over email, and the work was always increasing. each test takes over 10 hours to complete. So study. Each assignment was due in the morning, at 9. Really strict.
The second most inconvenient class I took in Southwestern. Aguilar is too strict. She never left any positive feedback on my assignments, either she'd pass the assignment, or fail it for missing a period in a sentence in an essay of five pages. If you're a poli sci major, then be aware.
You need three textbooks. She has failed assignments for missing one period (.) or a single coma (,). She won't answer your emails for over two days, and most will be ignored. The assignments are over 5 pages. The test format is too generic, and each documentary that she has you watch are 3, so you have to study at least 10 hours minimum to study.
The cons still outweigh the benefits of taking this course. Find another class, or change your major.
She never answered emails. Never offered constructive criticism to improve my work, but only bothered searching for any errors to fail an assignment. Missing a comma would cost you 50% on work. If you had a question, just use the syllabus. The final exams took over 9 hours to finish, make time codes for 3 documentaries on a MicroSoft Document.
Very easy class most of all exams were False or True and were True. Very recommended if you just want to pass the class and have a good grade.
I took this course as fast track, I did all of the weekly test given , however she is a very very tough grader . She will give you a 0 for any small mistake. The final/ midterms take from 4-8 hours to complete and they bring you down tremendously ! Do not recommend.
8-week online course (no zoom lectures), weekly quizzes and extra credit assignments. You have to learn the material yourself, I had zero interactions with her. All of the questions for every test you'll take come directly from the textbook. For all the polysci peeps, its an easy A but you'll gain practically nothing in the long run.
Quizzes and final are based are on textbook. Extra credit assignments based on module content. Module material is interesting especially the cultural background on country case studies. Recommend the course.
She will not work with students, whether you try to redo the extra credit or quizzes, applying her syllabus to every email. Very petty when regarding work not "following" word by word. Do not take her if you have to, her submission due dates are horrible, being at midnight and middle of morning. She forgot the meaning of teaching. Useless emails!!
Aguilar is a strict grader - she'll deduct points for even minor errors. The workload is heavy, with long assignments and exams that require extensive preparation. While the class is challenging, unstuck study AI can be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
Claims to be neutral in her lectures, it is just a republican party bash session the whole time. Cuts students off when they start to point out flaws with the democratic party.
I missed 4 assignments (no late work allowed) when I reached out about my situation she used her syllabus against me and did not give any exceptions. She preached about deadlines and claims they are non-negotiable in the adult world. Found out she dropped me from her class 2 days AFTER the drop deadline and I received a W, seems quite hypocritical.
Professor Aguilar is a very sweet professor! Attendance is mandatory so you can't miss more than 5 classes because if you miss 5, she drops you but you can try to get back in the class with good reasoning. Not much homework, more in-class assignments so don't miss class and just do them.
I strongly urge you to choose a different professor. Please!!! Very unfair, and unreasonable. She's threatened to drop me from the class and were more than halfway through the semester. Dear professor Alma Aguilar, please re-evaluate yourself, and actually help your students. No student should feel this discouraged about their education. Thank you.
Compassion and understanding seem to be absent from her teaching style, making it difficult for students to approach her with concerns. As a result, her class can be highly stressful, with little room for flexibility or empathy. Do not recommend this professor by any means. Save your self from the head ache.
Her lack of patience often leaves students feeling unsupported, especially when they need clarification or assistance. Compassion and understanding seem absent from her teaching style, making it difficult for students to approach her with concerns. As a result, her class can be highly stressful, with little room for flexibility or empathy.
This professor is strict with attendance and often inconsistent. She marks students tardy even if only a minute late and disregards excused absences promised in advance. Her work isn't hard, and textbooks aren't necessary if you search online for answers. Be cautious if you take her class.
This professor is very far left Liberal, as her course material is anti-Donald Trump. She vents and lectures on how terrible he is instead of being neural and teach the material. Not one thing was said negatively about any left-wing candidates or politicians. Other than political bias, she does support military duty schedules for active/reserves.
The professor is always prepared for class lecture. She knows politics. I appreciate that she does not sugar coat the facts something I appreciate.
Despite these ratings, Professor Aguilar is lowk the goat. She does have her own political opinions like everyone else and during her lectures she is very straight up and honest. There's no homework for the class so that's a plus. An insanely easy class, she even gives you 2 attempts on her bi-weekly quizzes. Take her pol sci class. Very Passionate
I did not have a good experience with this professor. Her due by dates were weird and confusing. Unfortunately I missed the final and received an f. I take responsibility, but why was it that she didn't post the final till a day before it was due. Also the announcement that she sent saying that it was posted was sent out at 4:30 AM.
