This guy is a joke, you follow. anyone who has taken him knows about his corny jokes and his grading. he doesnt grade everyone the same. you could have higher grades and receive a lower one as your final. but hes better than sutton. be careful of this guy
Doesn't always test on course material. Tends to read information from book. If asked for assistance, tells you that he will look into it and never does.
Don't even consider him as an advisor. He's not willing to help much.
Let me explain you...he's not helpful...he takes too long to grade exams, yet has no research to speak of. Habitually late to class and talks about irrelevant material. Basically, you're left to your own devices if you take his class. AVOID!
NARROWMINDED EXTRIMIST are the two best words to sum this guy up....you follow? get used to this prase because you will be hearing it at least 10,000 times per class. Lame excuses as to why he failed to do something and extreme lack of punctuality ke
I graduated in the very early 90's. Of all my profs, I most remember Prof. Berry. Sounds like he has not changed one bit. He used to read from the book, like we were illiterate. Always promised to "get back to us" on our questions, but never did
"Follow the Berry.....and your life will be Merry!" Pay close attention to the way he says certain things like azzume, or his favorite go-to transition (ok..SO!), and if u have the patience, count the number of times he asks if u follow. This prof is one of the best comics ive come accross to date!
His use of lecture time is severely inconsistent with what he expects from his students. At times, his dialogue is infested with good humor and pure irrelevance.Pioneered a lower standard of structure & keeping promises with students.I do however appreciate his ability to keep class lively and funny.
his exams r tough & tricky. Most people in class feel like they'r gonna fail the class 'coz he makes it so hard but somehow gives good grade at the end. He wants to make ur life miserable by quizes and exams. Clases r really fun but u regret you took the class because there r lots of sleeples nights
Both classes are self consuming & require long hours of study, so don't expect to learn everything from the professor bc you won't. He's much easier & nicer than SUTTON. Also, be nice to him & make sure he likes u!! That will add extra points to ur final grade. Berry is REALLY funny as hell!
Man, if i ever had the chance to erase memories from my mind, it will be ECE 333 and ECE 280. Dr. Berry assured each night was sleepless or nightmarish by using homework, tests, or an extremely shiny bald head. If you take the class, bring alcohol to class. It helped to ease the pain.
Berry is the BEST ECE professor out there! I dont understand why people dissing him. He explains everything in full detail and makes sure you understand concept before moving on. Sure, he speaks with funny accent, but his jokes are so funny & he is LAID BACK like crazy. He is better than you think!
The worst ECE prof of my career. He was just a bad lecturer with a thick accent. His grading was somewhat suspect. Real dummies came out mysteriously high grades. He is the type that will nail you for a very small mistake and let it go with another student.
I dunno what that guy is talking about... Berry is horrible. The B+ I earned was through countless hours of reading material that berry didn't cover too well in class. If you want to get by without learning the material, he's a wonderful professor. But remember, 280 material will be used in both ECE 333 and 433 and a few other classes.
Never seen anyone plays favorites like this guy. Get on his good side if you are in his class.
Absolutely the most ignorant Professor on this earth. I had an A in the course but I taught myself the materials. I can't believe he's been teaching for 15 years. He's given Mason a bad name.
Try to take the class we ANYONE ELSE if you have choice. Be on his good side otherwise he'll make sure to see you again. absolutly the worst teacher I had ever had in my life. The good thing is that the book ir really good in ECE 333 and it teaches you to study on your own. GOOD LUCK!
His exams are somewhat fair, half of the problems come straight out from the text examples, homeworks and handouts. However, you need to spend whole weekends studying by urself, as he spends half of the lecture talking about newspapers. Also, he surely does have his "favorite" students and it goes straight to the grades. Talk bout fairness.
look u can't expect a goof grade if u don't work for it...make sure u do the homeworks before taking his exams, other than that ur fine...cause he'll notice if u shine in grades and/or at participation in class...and that's when u become his fave.

The worst professor you could possible have for this class. DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. Gives us very difficult exams and he assigns projects DURING FINALS WEEK! Does not explain anything in class and tells you to read the material on your own. Gives very little formulas on exams and expects you to memorize.
Professor Berry is a nice guy, and I think he tries, but he simply does not have the ability to teach - and I'm not certain he understands the material. I often thought about him when I encountered difficult times while getting my PhD, and I would thin, "if that guy can get a PhD in EE, anybody can." I pity you suckers who have to take his class.
Interesting character. Has the whole class laughing at least once per session. Explains very carefully and does not get frustrated even when someone is practically unteachable. Yes, we had some SLOW folks. Bends over backwards to help you if you are having trouble, so if you do not do well you have only yourself to blame. Highly recommended.

This guy is a real pro at deflecting questions. "You want to come next semester?" "Listen My Friends", etc, etc. For 280 you can get by listening to his lectures, but hit the book HARD for 333 and 433. Even if you are getting perfects on the homework you still need to study a lot. And for goodness sake take Sutton if you can.
On top of the thorough knowledge in basic circuits, you have to read approximately 800 pgs. of text in Ece 333&433 combined - that should explain how rigorous the two classes are- take the book with you everywhere you go if you would like to attain solid grades in 333/433 cuz the 'very merry Berry' will not spend time to cover squat during lectures
this teacher doesn't know jack. Ask him a question about homework and he will open the answer manual and read you the answer. Ask him a question about a hard problem in class and he will tell he will get back to you about it. Not very nice, rude at times, and grades by favoritism. i dont recommend, but sometimes you have no choice but to take him.
He sometimes gives very good lectures, but most of the times, he goes off topic and talk about other things in the world. When time runs out, I ended up have to read the book myself to understand the material. Very hard test. If you are lost in this class, go read the text book. It's your best friend.
Mr. Berry should not teach, he doesn't know any thing. If any one has to take ECE 333 you should wait for different teacher.
I want to find and slap the guy that gave Berry his Phd. For this class, read the book. When you ask him something, make sure you catch him off-guard by asking a specific question. Otherwise, good luck getting the right answer from him. Also he wastes lot of class time by his inane small talk. "My friend, dddo you tttinkkk this class is easy?"
Classical Quotes coming from the 'berr': "FRIENDS" "LET ME EXPLAIN YOU" "YOU FOLLOW" "WE WILL TAKE CARE".....countless times....lol
I don't think that he is quite as bad a some people say, but he can be difficult to understand at times. I strongly disagree about him being unhelpful. Dr. Barry seems to take a genuine interest in seeing his students succeed. He is not always successful in reaching that goal, but he tries. He does show favoritism but it is not extreme.
Not a smart prof.
If you are in the process of registering for this class.. do yourself a favor and find the nearest cliff and jump over it because as the semester goes along your life goes down the hill drasticlly.. this proffessor is usless and doesnt know the material. he shows extereem favorism and is a hard grader. AMEN
i know people who took this class for six times. dont take him ... find another proffessor and if you cant ... go to another university.... or diffrent country.... stay as far away as you can from him
He is useless when comes to teaching materials. Although he is a totally nice person off the class, you really don't want to learn this tough course all by yourself. Too bad you don't have much choice for this class. you can go to hell by taking Dr. Sutten. I'd still take him and start reading the book over and over again.
i am a electrical engineering sutdent with nearly 4.0 GPA. and even with students like me can not stand how useless he is at teaching ECE433.
He's a very nice person. However as a professor, he's completely useless. If you ask him a question in class you always get the same answer:"Come to my office!" Once you go to his office:"Go read the book!" Once you insist by proving to him that you already read the book, he's going to read you the solution manual.
This professor plays EXTREME favorites and if he doesn't like you from the beginning, he will stay that way. He doesn't do much in clear explanation either and just tells you to read the book and tries to avoid answering your question and throws back the question back to you. I do NOT recommend this professor to ANYONE. He is very useless.
Everyone has different views about Dr. Berry. He hated me from the begining of the semester and failed me from the course. He never responded to my e-mails. He likes to put pressure to students. Come on, this is college, come and teach as much as you can. We here to learn not deal with his mind trick games. He can't teach by the way.
Honestly he is not that bad. The problem with this class is how much material gets thrown in because of what Berry expects on the theoretical side of things. My main issue was that he didn't even hint at whats going to be on the exams other then "everything". Otherwise a fine professor, if you can't pass Berry you WILL NOT pass Sutton.
The Worst in the US, and maybe the world. Can somebody explain to me why GMU keeps such a horrible stain on their ECE departement? He doesn't understand what he is talking about, unfair in his grading, can't explain anything. Not only you should not take any of his classes, but GMU should do something about him.
To be completely honest Dr. Berry was a good for 280, a little confusing in 333, and just recited the book in 433. Myth Busting: He may play favorites but his grading is unbiased. He understands material up to 333. If you can't pass 280, try harder. The alternative is Sutton. Berry looks like Sam the Eagle. EE is not supposed to be easy.
Dr. Berry is a good teacher. He does not pass every slacker that comes in but if you go to class, do ALL the homework and pay attention then you WILL learn circuits and pass his class. Having Berry then Sutton, I much prefer Berry. Also, he is a tough guy and will not make things easy for you but he has good intentions and wants you to learn.
Berry is alright I guess. This was a tough class. He does hint at what mathematical problems are gonna be on the exams. My problem was that the conceptual stuff on the exams can literally be anything. Also, he never graded anything regarding conceptual hw and takes the exams back so it is difficult to know what he wants.
Out of all the teachers he's probably your safest choice. The material is really hard and only in hindsight do you realize that it's actually doable but if you work(REALLY HARD) you'll do good. His exams are based on HW questions so if u understand ALL if them an A shouldn't be too far out of reach. But he also tests you on conceptional portions if the text, mostly terms so you actually have to have a well rounded knowledge on the material. You'll hate him while you have him, but he's not so bad
Tough Professor. But you would be able to pass him if you have past experience with Electrical Engineering and are eager to work hard for your grade. He doesn't teach much mostly summarize each section of the book. This guy was definitely a tough teacher overall. Even if you manage to study its hard to tell what he will test you on.
He's a really nice guy, and willing to help you if you ask for it. His class is hard, but he knows that and accounts for it in grading. Almost always adds curves to the tests.
Really nice and helpful professor. Always willing to guide you. Even though he is not clear at teaching, if you understand all the home work problems one can easily get a B or higher. All his tests are based on HW added a little change. His theoretical hw problems are hopeless. He is pretty unclear when he assigns theoretical question.
This class is infamous for being very difficult but Berry explains things very well and cares for his students, he encourages people to come to his office even when it's not his office hours. He wants you to struggle and work hard to really learn the material. He can get annoyed if one asks him a question he already answered. Overall good professor
Best Professor you will have ever! hands down he is hard but he cares more than any professor I have had does and wants you to succeed not only in class but in life. If all professors were as good as he is gmu would be like MIT.
People complain when Dr.Berry says to read the book but that's because its impossible to cover the material when people keep asking simple questions that are answered in the reading To do well make sure you can do all of in class examples and homework problems. As long as you stay above the class average you will pass.
This professor is great, I don't understand why people put him down. He may be a bit fast at times and he may not cover the information very clearly at times as well, but if you honestly read the book and work out all the practice problems, examples, and homework problems, you will do well. Good teacher overall!
good teacher.
My friend, if you do not remember the ECE 280 material and you come to ECE 333, God bless. Read the book!
Sets very high expectations, and does everything in his power to help you meet them. Lots of homework and quizzes, but it was necessary for this course to keep everyone on track. I won't hesitate to sign up for his classes in the future.
Pros: Extremely helpful and willing to help motivated students. Cons: Everything is graded strictly and quite subjectively. Even if you know the material absolutely cold, you may get mediocre scores because the grader didn't like your explanation. So complete mastery of the material may not produce good grades... very frustrating and disappointing.
I have never given a professor a bad review. READ THE BOOK and do the hw, his quizzes are based on the readings. His test are based off hw. If you fail to do this, you will suffer the consequences. Dont ask him about dot convention, he gets angry when you dont get it the first time.
His tests and pop-quizzes are pretty much taken from the book. I did fall asleep at times (9am class), but I was still able to understand the material by reading the book. Be sure to get him to like you though (show up and be nice). That helps in the long run. There was also an Op-Amp group project that we had to do. Get a good partner for that.
This class is a bit hard. Still, if you show up to class and ask for help (as well as be nice to him), it'll work out in the long run. Be sure to not have the international edition of the textbook (despite both of them being 6th edition, the international edition is different from the normal one). The order of the problems are different.
Pretty good professor. Make sure to write your Gnumber correctly and turn in impeccable homeworks. For exams: they are the same questions as the homework questions. For 285 the multiple choice on exams was taken from the book multiple choice questions. Just go to class, do the readings, memorize the HW and you should get an A.
This professor's teaching style is best. He is helpful to student. His quiz policy is not good. If you study beginning to end of the book, there is no way you can fail his class. There are some myths about him in students, but they are all just "MYTHS". Exams come from HWs,QUIZZEs and BOOK EXERCISEs. I recommend him. Again, down side is "Quiz".
Dr. Berry is a great professor despite all of the petty complaints you might hear about him. Yes he tells you read the book, because you should. Yes he holds you accountable for what you're supposed to know, because you should know it. He just wants the students to learn and do well. What's wrong with that?
Dr Berry is always helpful. He requires hard from each student in all of his classes. If you read book, do all examples and hws from book by yourself, you will get guaranteed A. I highly enjoyed his teaching style. If you are lazy and procrastinator, dont take dr berry.
this is killer course
This course is tough but I really enjoyed Dr. Berry's class. This guy knows his tough and he is very helpful. Dr. Berry will appreciate you if you read the material before going to class so that you can answer some of his questions and so that he doesn't have to explain everything in the lecture. His exams come from homework problems and examples.
horrible, his english is bad and he's hard to understand sometimes. made us do a project , gave us a second exam just before our finals and we didn't get our grade for it before taking the final so we took the final exam not knowing how we did on the second exam.
Excellent professor. The course is based on the textbook entirely. As long as you know how all the homework problems are done and all the examples in the chapter, you should get a good grade. Make sure to know the review problems for the final -- half of the final is based on that.
This professor is quite the interesting character. My best piece of advice would be to make sure you are able to try to understand most of the material during the class. Also his test questions mostly come from book problems or slightly modified. He truly cares about his students but wants you to respect the class and give all your effort. book.
He follows very old style of teaching. I think he don't fit this time. Seems polite but not.
Dr. Berry means well and is a nice guy, but his classes are simply awful. I have never dreaded having to take a professor as much as him (from ECE 334). I would absolutely not recommend taking him, take whoever is the alternative. His weekly homeworks are such overkill, with each taking several hours to complete if you try and do them diligently.
I've had Berry for ECE 285, 286, 333, and 433 not by choice. In the beginning, I dreaded attending classes , but overtime I really appreciated him. He caters to the class and writes the exam accordingly. For some exams, he'll even ask the class if we want a certain chapter to be on the exam or not. Old school style of teaching, but well worth it
Dr. Berry is so nice and seems to genuinely care. He relies heavily on his lecture notes (reads off them in class). He's willing to answer questions and has office hours. Bc notes are on BB, attendance isn't necessary except for CW/pop-quizzes. If you do the HW and txtbk prax problems, you should be ok! Exams are fair and expectations clear!
Prof. Berry genuinely cares about his students succeeding, and if he sees you putting the work in he'll pass you even if you don't do well on the tests. He rewards improvement between the midterm and final. He also has an open door policy, you can go to his office for questions whenever you want. This & 286 are challenging and a lot of work though
At first impression, Prof. Berry seems like the kind of professor who is caring and wants his students to ask questions. Always pushes you to come to his office to ask questions. The problem is he will find every way possible to avoid answering the problem. His favorite line is "Why are you asking me this question?". I only learned from my TA.
Dr. Berry is one of the best ECE profs at Mason. He is always available outside of class, his teaching is straightforward: theory then solving several types problems, and he is caring. Sometimes he does skip steps when solving problems but he'll go over it in office hours if asked. Exams are based off of homework and class notes.
Berry's class can be a good experience, but you need to know how to handle it. He sometimes makes simple concepts sound complicated, so discuss with friends and read the book. Berry will curve your final grade based on how much work he perceives you have put into his class. This means come to class, ask questions, and do the HW and CW problems.
Expected you to know everything on the course. When asked question, he gets mad and do not answer it very well. Teaching style is not good and all he does is to tell you to read the book to avoid answering the questions. Avoid taking him instead of wasting your time.
From my experience, Dr. Berry was not a good professor, constant changes in deadlines or quizzes, unclear explanations and too much writing assignments. For me, the most important thing was that he did not provide us feedback on the homework and assignments, and he did not respond to any of the emails I sent him. I would no take this course again.
save your time. do not take him. he is not a good helper and teacher. he is not organized.
one of the worest proffessor i have ever had in everything. I am out of his class very quick. do that for yourself ok.
He's not that bad as people make it sound. Exam questions come directly from the homework or lecture slides. Class works that had to submitted the same day they were assigned were a bit annoying but not that bad. Ultimately, ece286 and ece333 are hard classes and the only way you'll get good at the topics covered is by putting in a lot of work.
Most of the things you hear about him are true. 286 is all about just reading the textbook and knowing how to solve the examples in it. His lectures are just him reading off his notes. Be prepared to be assigned problems due the same day and to be quizzed on HW material that isn't due until days later. He is lenient if you show improvement
I would say that most of the bad and good things you hear about him are true. He's not a great teacher but he is a decent person. If you want to pass his classes, read the book. Do the examples he tells you to do. Do the homework the day that it is assigned. If you have trouble understanding, go to your classmates. Good luck.
Alok Berry is an amazing professor my favorite at Mason so far! The class is hard you must “read the book” it is very helpful.
I am mainly writing this to warn you about the 3500 word report required for this class. Besides that, Dr. Berry is a nice guy, I recommend going to his office hours. His exams are fair. He does give same day assignments, but they are typically easy and he will do 90% of the problem in class. Speaking of, really try not to skip his class.
