Awesome Russian Fairy Tales TA. Funny, interesting, and knows his stuff.
Also had him for Ger1320. Alton ROCKS!
Also had him for GER 0003. Alton has a great sense of humour and a very matter-of-fact approach to teaching.
This man made my first year of college extremely enjoyable and rewarding. His teaching approach is incomparable and his touch of humor made the class fly by. I would recommend him to anyone at Pitt and I hope to someday have him as an instuctor again!
Alton is a fantastic professor. He peppers his classes with humor and sarcasm and treats everyone like adults--not condescending behavior here. I would love to have Alton as a professor again!
I love Alton. His teaching methods are... intriguing and humorous. I would recommmend him to anyone!
Very flexible class style. Fun and enjoyable; however, grading rather subjective due to small amounts of graded material
I had him as my recitation instructor, and thought he was awesome. Very clear and makes you very prepared.
Hes ok
just amazing
he is a very interesting man and is somewhat self-deprecating. enjoys the topic. is hard to take your eyes off of. definitely my top prof. i would want to learn anything he would want to teach me !
awesome guy. Very funny and helpful. Makes class interesting and keeps your attention with jokes.
I don't think there was one person in our class that Alton couldn't get a smile out of. He related to us as students and in turn made us want to be there and want to learn. He takes what he teaches very seriously and believes it too. He assumes his role as professor better than anyone who's ever taught me. Alton Post is one in a million.
he's a fun guy... i just don't think he knows what's going on... kind of scatterbrained, assignments are similiar... doesn't answer email and exams seem rather silly compared to the material. reminds me of a long-haired billy idol which is kind of fun. he IS fun... just make sure you READ the syllabus (unclear)
Kind of zany... in a weird/good kind of way. He makes a lot of jokes, but I'm still not quite sure if thats so he can keep up the class attention or just cover his inabilities (he's technologically inept) kind of a misfit, but entertaining. decent class
Indo-European folktales is a fairly easy course... there's A LOT of reading though and professor post is a total nutbag... kind of freaky but surprisinly OK once you approach him
Actually nice guy, very helpful for such a large class (huge lecture hall). Got to keep up with the reading and the tech in the room stinks, which can be distracting, but not his fault. Bunch of students clueless, but he treats them decent (doesn't talk down). Knows his stuff
I think sci-fi class is cool. Alton's kinda corny but then what is sci-fi without a little corn? He makes it enjoyable.
I cannot even express to you how unbelievably easy this class is. Plus, Dr. Post is easy to listen to and incredibly entertaining. Recitation attendance is required. Easy A if you read the book but even that isn't necessary.
Umm... best teacher ever. He makes lectures extremely fun. Tests are obscenely easy. Do the reading, and watch the films he wants you to - you'll enjoy the class.
He tried to make the classes interesting and succeeded for the most part. The tests were moderate, and you must read your material and know it well to pass.
Before I thought Vampires was just some joke class, but wow, lots of history/theory here. Alton was great, knew his stuff and really wanted us to do well. He did a great job with balancing the high-end with the pop culture. Now I kinda look at movies a WHOLE lot differently. TAKE IT!
Fun but serious. Now I understand things like "post-modernity" and "postmodernism" Tests are straighforward Fair guy, no question, and ready to help out. Don't slack!
I took both of his classes this semester. He is sensational to watch and has a way of making me twitter with excitement. It should be illegal to be Mr. Post... it should be. Gosh, he stupefies! He makes me want to read stuff I shouldn't want to read. In his spare time I bet he keeps a rock collection... Full of curios, trinkets, and doodads.
Really, really gets into his subject matter. Seems to want us to do well (sometimes too helpful?) But listens pretty good and is scary bright. But really nice guy in person.
This man is awesome. Great sense of humor and makes fun of himself a lot. I wish he taught more courses. He practically tells you all of the questions that are going to be on the tests, so the tests are fairly easy. For an easy A, take European Folktales w/Post
On our side, certainly, and handles the "outsiders" in a nice fashion. Readily available. Listens well, really well-read. Doesn't place himself "above" anyone in class. Hates being called "prof," just "Alton" One downside; doesn't tolerate people who aren't ever prepared (but does it diplomatically--even lets them try to b.s. a bit to save fac
This guy is ridiculous. You have to do no work in his classes. I mean literally no work. I haven't spent one minute outside of class and I have 100%. He's hilarious and constantly makes wildly inappropriate jokes, so you should take him if you want an easy A.
Bright but very humble, treated us like peers. Listened well and quickly admitted any mistakes. Respected our opinions (even included them on exams) Even gave his cell number for any issues. Not an easy A for sure, but a well-deserved one if you get it. Take him@
He's hot. He's awesome. And he looks like what he's teaching (vampire, or at least a vampire hunter). There's a lot of reading and movie watching but he gives you as much assistance as possible. Only bad experience I had was when he got the opening song from The Hunger stuck in my head when I had an exam in NroSci right after his class, lol.
Good guy, really!
People dressed as aliens invaded our classroom for the sci-fi class and brought candy for us. It was tres cool. Alton's classes are unexpected! You'll be sad if you miss one.
Dude, take ANY class with this professor. He's awesome, very helpful, and such a fun guy. Yes, we read a lot of novels, and most of the movies are uninteresting to me, but it beats having to listen to a lecture. And he usually ends early. ESP for 2hr classes. :D
Take the online course...read at your own pace and can take exams when you want as long as it's done before the end of term. Recommend taking after the once a month meeting, which you should go to as he tells what the essay question is about.
He stopped coming to our Monday night class. Left us with a sub who's way better. He was great for the sci-fi course but now I dunno what happened. It's like he's not into it anymore.
This class was great! Post has a great sense of humor and makes class fun. Online you can read at your own pace and the workshops he gives you hints about the essay
I know Alton is supposed to be this GREAT prof, and apparently he had some personal issues this semester, but I was not impressed with the way he handled the many problems our class encountered. We never received any sort of explanation for his repeated absences, and he never returned any graded material. He really kind of left us hanging.
very good guy and a good professor. he comes off as kind of a creepy old guy but is awesome. he goes out of his way to help and is very informative.
Alton is and will always be the greatest professor that ever lived. Obviously some people had an issue with the Madness class. I think it may have just been a bad semester. Alton is compelling and enjoyable. He entertains as well as teaches. And these classes are absolutely NOT worthless for the furture, to whoever said that. I am better prepared.
ok, really. seemed overworked, but listened well. had him for German I, SF: East and West (manic but clear). Texts not bad, but some real theory. Learned a good deal. Gotta earn your grade, but he works with you. Old school, but pretty on the mark. Seemed tired, but sprung back. great speaker. been around
He really enjoyed teaching and made it fun. He made the boring stuff about German language (like verbs, nouns, and pronouns and stuff like that) interesting. Most professors just want you to just say it. You got bonus points for morbid factors in essays. All I can say is that I would def take this professor again!
This professor is not only incredibly entertaining but is also a really good teacher. He explains things well while making even the most boring subjects fun. He often regales the class with fantastic stories of his time in the service. I would take every class this professor teaches.
Laid-back, treats students as equals and makes stuff he's teaching relevant. But after the first exam, he stopped showing up to class, because of personal issues. He never communicated clearly with anyone, including the substitute. Gave a final a week after what was supposed to be the last class and no one knew what it was on. Very unprofessional.
This class was really relaxing. We had a cramped room a lot of the time but it was kind of cool to have at night. Alton's really cute and kind of twisted. The material included Taxi Driver (one of the better movies I've been forced to watch for class) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest which is fantastic. Fun class.
Didn't show up to class?? I think he may have missed two classes and both times we watched a movie while he was away. Alton's classes are not "cake walks" so to speak but they are fun and full of colorful humor. Other reviewers may have been upset with final grades, but there is really no better professor at Pitt when it comes to fun. Take Alton!!!
Can be cool; lot's and lot's of students, but he gives a dam# as much as possible. Gonzo theory, but good speaker. Can be long-winded and sometimes scattered, but brings it home. Heard he's the sh*t for SF, Madness and Vamps; unorthodox, but entertaining
independent study class was highly unorganized. tests question specific details, but he was understanding and lenient with grading. if you do go to the optional study sessions, you'll find he's incredibly wacky and a great sense of humor. would be A LOT better to take his actual class, rather than independent study!
entertaining teacher. has a very large knowledge of the subject he is teaching and can keep my attention while teaching it. highly recommend taking any of his classes, ive taken everything that he teaches.
Right on! Alton Post for class again!
Prof Alton is great. He's really brilliant and knows his stuff. He has a very idiosyncratic method of teaching, but I dig it!
Interesting prof who makes class fun and really wants to get to know students. He was very helpful if you tried at all, though he definitely has favorites. Would definitely take him again.
TAKE ANYTHING HE TEACHES!!!!! Yes, he is unorganized, but the class as a whole is amazing. Alton makes the class fun and enjoyable. Second half of the course is watching films. That's it. If you pay attention, you will have an A.
can kinda be that stereotypical 'absent minded prof' sometimes, but in a great way, seems to really love his classes. I'm not much of a sf fan, but picked up a lot. Had him for vampires too. the best!
I really like Alton as a person and teacher for the most part. He really does make you enjoy his class and his night class was the most bearable I've ever taken. Topics are extremely interesting and it is clear he knows what he is talking about and cares about it. Problem is, (and I feel it's a pretty big one) he is absolutely, without a doubt t
We missed class this semester a couple times for a snow day, then a fire alarm... which really was a fire, glad it turned out ok. But the way Alton handled the class and the setbacks was smooth. He cared about our time and made it FUN! I would recommend him to anyone interested in Vampires or Science Fiction. Great teacher!
Professor may not have a rubric for each and every second but this was the most enjoyable class I had this semester. Some of the exams were take-home and funny so if you complain about that, you're crazy. Also watched some films that were pretty weird but cool. Alton made our class unique and interesting, not dull and full of mindless paperwork.
Alton did rearrange some things later rather than sooner but this was a once a week that was constantly being cancelled by snow and fire (lol). Also, Blackboard is crap and eats things. Thank god we didn't use a drop box! Alton is super fun and really nice to look at too ;o) hehe. He really takes his vampires seriously.
some annoying tek issues, but good speaker, quick wit and knows his sh*t. gotta work, but he'll help...alot.
very easy-going, a little quirky, but definitely dedicated to making sure you are satisfied and trying his best to make sure everything is clear and FAIR! taking another course of his next semester; recommended.
really cool professor. friendly and enthusiastic about the subject
Extra helpful - gives his cell phone number out to students. This is the third class I've had with him in the 6 years I've been at Pitt and his dedication to his students in getting them to understand the material is incredible. He is a bit quirky, but that, overall, helps keep your attention and keep the class moving at a good pace.
Alton is AWESOME. His class requires work but he makes himself available for all students. I called him 10+ times during the sem. and he answered every time! he really wants to help you and will do anything he can for you. I wish I had the opportunity to take more classes with him. Anyone who doesn't take him is really missing out on learning
Great professor and huge asset to Pitt. very helpful and you can tell he loves what he does. makes class entertaining and I actually looked forward to going every week. He taught me so much and did it in a way that will actually be useful to me in the future. Amazing teacher. Highly recommended.
Alton is a great professor and you wont be disappointed taking this class. You watch alot of films, only a little reading and the tests are not difficult. As for Alton himself, a very easy going guy, loves the class and has a lot of fun with it. If you ever need help, do not hesitate to go, he'll help you get to the answer you need to get.
The guy is awesome, and so is the course. You read stories that are fun. He's very helpful and is always there when you need him. I recommend taking a course with him if you want a good time learning fun stuff!
One of the best professors I have ever encountered. Plainly put, this man both cares about his students, and is enjoyable to interact with. This is what other professors should aspire to be.
Okay, so I followed the rubric for the class and received an A in the course. However, Alton is disorganized to the point of distraction, cannot follow a syllabus to save his life, and will not post any of your grades nor progress until past the grading due date. Sure he can be funny, but he should not be in a college setting. He is no professor.
As a grad: Alton is certainly one of the best professors I have had at Pitt. He's captivating and makes you think outside the box but doesn't believe in stressing you needlessly. Even if he's a bit disorganized like many other profs, he's still very efficient, so you'll never notice. Unlike the other profs, he ACCEPTS that he's not 100% perfect
He has improved since when i had him in the Vampire: Blood and Empire, 0090. It is a fun course, BUT LOTS OF READING. Always liked his style of teaching, though Online courses are a pain in general. There was alot of issues with Blackboard (Most useless program ever, from the PoV of a Software Engineer/Programmer) Enjoy his teaching style alot.
i took the online version and there are a bunch of short stories to read but they are entertaining! the three tests are a bit challenging but not crazy difficult. i recommend flash cards for the stories.
Truly a wonderful professor and human being. Has been absolutely accommodating in every way. Wants you to understand the subject matter, but not overanalyze the material. Intelligent as well as helpful and cordial.
Glass is always good time with Alton. He is funny, and cares very much about his students' progress.
Had Alton as a TA but he subbed for the professor. Isnt tek savy but this man is hilarious, easy to approach, kind, and most importantly knows what he is talking about! If you see his name on any course listing TAKE THAT CLASS!!!! Bit of work but it is def worth it
He took over for our original professor towards the middle of the semester, so he was kinda abruptly thrown into teaching us, but he still did fine! He's funny, I liked him. He also knew what he was talking about and made sense, but he doesn't lecture much 'cause he's into "picking our brains." I recommend him.
Living legend.
Alton was a great professor. He is really there for the students, and you can tell he cares about you and your grade. His lectures are informative and engaging, and he makes things easy to understand. Very funny too.
Fabulous professor, extremely knowledgeable, makes every class interesting, really cares that you are learning, he seems to have unlimited knowledge on thousands of subjects, very humble for being so awesome. You will LOVE LOVE LOVE having him for a professor.
Had him for recitation. He is pretty lenient but will not tolerate you taking advantage of that. Cares about your grade. Has a good albeit slightly dark humor.
Had Alton for recitation and I loved him. Has a dark/raunchy sense of humor, but you'll laugh a lot and can't help but pay attention. Grades are somewhat self administered, but be honest with the guy about how you really think you did because he'll be sad if you lie. He's very odd, but he's a great guy.
Love him. So nice, patient and kind. Really, have him and you won't regret. Talkative but always encourage you to talk even you are shy at first. Don't care so much about his look. He is really a nice guy.
To get the full Folktales experience, Prof Post is a must for recitation. He's got an often twisted, yet hilarious, sense of humor. Recitations were more student driven, where he differed to student participation as opposed to just lecturing about the readings. Even let us go 15-20 min early most times. HIGHLY recommend
Alton is a super unique guy with an out-there sense of humor. What I didn't like about his class, however, was the completely unknown grading system he'd use to grade homework. Kids would get poor homework grades with no feedback, and the grades on blackboard would fluctuate randomly. Interesting guy, but just be a little cautious.
One of my favorite people at Pitt. I've only had him for recitations but he is one most laid back people ever. Literally just show up to class for full credit. Super funny and made class interesting and enjoyable.
