this guy is horrible at teaching. i dropped his class. when students asked questions he answered them in a way that left the class even more confused than before. i dont recommend him, and i dropped the class. i like math, but this class was horrible.
he is nice. class is hard.
Explains things well. Calculus requires work, and he helps you out so you understand the material well.

Great teacher! He is funny, loves his job, and makes sure to explain things well. Class is easy as long as you do the homework. A very fair grader too!!
This class was supposed to be so hard, but i have to say this guy is a good teacher. He will give you his own formulas for some things but they are usually good ones.I enjoyed him, very fair grader. would take him again. and he speaks spanglish, :)
Good professor. If you go to class, do all the homework problems, the test shouldn't be too bad. Calculus is hard, but he found a way to make it a little more interesting. Funny guy too.
Very charismatic and funny. Sometimes makes his tests hard but he grades them leniently so it all works out. Do the homework and you'll be fine. Occasionally goes on tangents but they're always funny and it keeps the class awake.
He is a really funny teacher, and makes calculus fun. I actually have an A in his class and I barely study for it, Do all your homework and then redo your homework before the test and you will get an A and do as much extra credit as possible.
dont get him
He's awesome. Funny and twisted. Best math teacher I've ever had....and I went to Annapolis (Naval Academy) for a year.
The Calculus Gods are punishing us! What did we ever do to deserve this unbearable torture? Why!? Why!?
This guy is awesome! Extra credit on everything, take five tests drop one!
the most awesome math teacher i've had
Great teacher if you want to be a stand-up commedian. Horrible at relating material to the students.Dont bother raising your hand to ask a question, you have to shout out to be recognized. All tests have trick questions.Bad Teacher. MUST do all HW to pass.
Excellent teacher. The test problems are all taken from the homework so if you keep up with the homework (the math lab is a big help with that one) the class is a breeze. This goes for the final as well. If you want to pass DE then go with Islas.
The BEST math teacher I've ever had-ended up with an "A". Be sure to do all the HW problems assigned because test questions come from there. He also offers tons of extra credit, this is the type of class where you just need to put in the effort.
Best teacher at UCF, He cares about students and makes CALC fun. proves that the stuff is easy, and makes fun of mexico, his home land
he good, he talk too much, make you want to go to sleep. But overall easy teacher. Do your hw those
VERY FUNNY
Can't control his class, so most of the time you can't even hear him, and even when you do, you can't understand his ranting. Gives unrelated practice tests. Makes test problems to throw you off, and tries to trick you.
DUDE DONT TAKE HIS CLASS ITS HORRIBLE HE IS A HORRIBLE HUMAN BEING IF YOU WANT TO CALL HIM A HUMAN BEING
This guy rocks. His tests are easy. He offers extra credit. Plus he's funny. Nothing else to say.
He is kind of funny at times but not the best teacher in the least bit. His tests are hard and are nothing like anything he teaches. He wastes time "proving" stuff which only confuses people and I already took AP calc (and passed). His final was the hardest test I have ever taken in my life.
You must do the HW to pass. His tests are hard, and the final seems impossible to pass, but i guess i passed it, managed to get a C, but if i would have studied more for the 3rd and 4th test, i would have gotten a B. You will learn alot from him, but he makes it harder than it should be.
Good teacher, DO ALL HOMEWORK, The first 10 mins of class he will answer all HW questions. alots of extra credit. Do your best(pass) on all the test. Test are hard. If u study u will do fine. FINAL IS IMPOSSIBLE(trust me). I got a C because the final. He helps doing office hours.
He will get you ready for Calc II... if you are willing to put the time into the class. Homework was e.c. but he now gives in class quizzes for e.c. He will also help you during his office hours. You have to do some work to earn your grade in this class - don't be afraid to ask questions!!!
If you take his class, you must go to the gym and work out more than you want to. Half the semester I was just trying to figure the guy out, then I discovered the math lab.
If you've gotta take calc, take it with this guy. it's the only math class i've ever looked forward to going to. he makes it fun and if you do all the homework and make an effort you should do just fine. i got a B and i didn't even study for the final.
really good teacher. might not understand what he says "arbitratily close to" for limits, now you know what he's saying. realy nice guy really funny. its all about how much you know going into the class though. i didnt study, never did the homework and got a B but other kids who studied a lot failed
A good teacher but a hard class. He gives plenty of extra credit, posible 10 pts per test. But he will double the number of questions on the test at some point, so you have to be fast.
This teacher is so badass. No other calc teachers will give extra credit quizzes. If you do homework, you will get an A on his tests. He takes the questions exactly and directly from the homework problems. He doesn't give you things you've never seen before. And he's hilarious. Awesome awesome
I LOVE ISLAS! Hes the best teacher ever! He can TEACH! Just do homework and make sure you can do them on your own, bc theyre test questions. If they are not in the book you can easily do them on your own. Best math teacher ever! This is the first math class I got an A in =D. just WORK HARD N STUDY!
Horrible experience. Most of our class withdrew. Gave EXTREMELY difficult questions. Couldn't teach the class at all. I would like to say do the HW and you'll be fine but that would false advertising.
If you've never taken AP calc, beware. IF you don't bust your but, you will fail. Offers alot of extra credit and is really funny. I loved going to the class. HE loosens up after the class size cuts in half after Withdrawl deadline. He is cool and if you go to his office and do hwk, he will remember
Hard at first. If you have a C don't drop it. Study, learn at least the basics and you'll do O.K. I made a valiant effort on the final, tho I didn't study, and its unlikely I got a B on it. Somehow, my grade miraculously went from a mid B to an A. I am glad I stuck with this class.
I had heard horror stories about this class. This professor made it super easy and pretty fun. Although it should be noted that I had IB calculus in High School so this class was kind of a review up until chapters 5 and 6. This professor is awesome though!
Nice guy but not a very good teacher. I felt like an idiot every test day because the problems would look nothing like what he told us to study. If you like Impossible tests and pointless lectures, take this guy.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I hear he is great for calc 1. He is horrible for calc 3. He can barley do it him self so there is no chance that he can teach it to you. If you can learn yourself and pass hard tests you might have a shot. The people who did best in class did not even come to class. Those of us who did were lost. I took it again with a good teacher and have an A.
Man, this guy really sucks, he will do an example on the board an skips all the steps and before u are done writing it down he is on the next problem. HOrrible, moves really fast, does not explain clearly, did i say horrible yet, he should be on another field because he sure as hell can't teach. I hate this crap..Overall Islas STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class is horrible! He moves wayyy to fast! He doesn't teach.. you have to do the homework assignments and teach yourself. When he does actually attempt a problem he moves way to fast and can't explain thoroughly! Very frustrating- most withdrew from the class! SUX BALLS!
You people are crazy who consider him "great" are crazy... Tests and quizes are about 6 word problems, no multiple choice and he gives no credit for even having to answer somewhat right... if you have a negative but the write formula, etc he still marks it wrong. Islas makes it very difficult and you have to teach yourself- i suggest getting a tuto
before my friend told me that his quizzes were worth extra credit, now they're not. Gets annoying have 1 every week. Wish he would drop the lowest test and quiz. He really skips alot of steps, he would be easier if i took calculus before. wouldn't recommend.
I took Clac I with him last year and he was the best math prof I've had. The problems on the test come from the HW. Yeah they might be hard if you haven't done them before.
I hope you like teaching yourself the material. Make sure you do all of the homework at least twice before the test because he sometimes gives test questions out of it.
great teacher overall. If you do your homework and study, it's an easy A. The book sucks, but he explains it well. Also, he is very clear about what will be on the test.
You're CRAZY- he's hard as hell- doesnt teach- isnt clear- pulls out random problems- and half way through the course decided he wouldnt go over HW probs with us anymore- WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! I promise you- he's not easy unles syour a math wiz and can teach yourself!
He tells lots of stories, DO ALL THE HOMEWORK, tests are EXACTLY like the homework. He counts quizzes diffrently every semester to help the class, if you have at least a 50% by withdrawl, you'll be fine at the end. you could have worse and better than him
He makes the class fun with his real-life applications and his thick Mexican accent. It's an easy class overall; the quiz and test problems are exact hw problems, so just do the hw and you're set. I loved him.
islas is a good person and a great teacher. kids who complain are expecting everything to be handed to them. its calc not algebra. try paying attention and doing HW. he stopped doing HW probs in class but would do one just like it to follow. he curves, and a good grade is easy to get with effort. yes effort, your in college.
Where do i begin... This guy is great for those people who want a refreher course on calc 1. If you have not taken calc before beware he will screw you over by teaching you the course assuming that the great majority of the people have taken calc before. He seems to be great at his research but at teaching he really sucks!
This guy is a stereotypical teacher, here for research not to teach. He is very clear, and always willing to help, and he's funny too, but the material is far from easy.
Self study, but he is very helpful
he's so funny, which makes the class more interesting. he maybe strict at times, but the tests and quizzes are from the book, which is the greatest thing a math professor can do...take him!
This guy is CRAZY. He's hilarious, but seriously, if I hadn't taken Calc I in high school, I probably would have failed this class. His tests are from the book, but I found I had to pretty much learn from the book and not from him. It seemed like it was hard for him to keep his train of thought. What do hurricanes have to do with Calculus??
The BEST math teacher I've ever had! SO funny, and cares about his students. Changes grading scale a lot (to students' benefit). Tests from book. SO good at explaining. Makes Calc FUN!!
he means well, but he cant teach. he has no lesson plans at all. not a well thought out teacher. if you ask him how to a problem, he will mess up like 3 times before he gets it correct. he just cant relay information to students well. HE HAS A HORRIBLE DROP RATE! your class will be cut in half after add/drop. he is a waste of time and money....
I took him for Calc I and II. The class isn't extremely hard as long as you have a lot of time to devote to it. All the test problems are from the chapter, so if you have time to master them, you'll do well in the class. He is a good teacher, but he follows no guideline; just makes up the syllabus as he goes along. He's a really funny dude too.
doesn't - 1 out of 5 - says it all?
He is good at heart. But is not organised and does not derive anything so its hard to see his train of thought. If math is not your forte avoid his class at all cost.
He made us work pretty hard but I was able ot pass Calc 11 and 111. He really cares about the students and gives lots of office hoursif you want to learn. The tests are all from HW problems.
horrible teacher
Great Techer! Calc is hard but he is always willing ot help and keeps the class interesting.
HE IS HORRIBLE AT TEACHING. NICE GUY. BE PREPARED TO TEACH YOURSELF BECAUSE HE DOES NOT HELP MUCH. HE WILL TELL YOU TO STUDY ONE THING, AND TEST YOU ON CONCEPTS MUCH HARDER THAN THE ONES GONE OVER IN CLASS. MAJORITY OF MY CLASSED DROPPED OR FAILED... DO NOT TAKE HIM!
This professor was amazing. It was my second time taking this course (I failed MISERABLY the first time). He incorporates real world applications to everything he teaches and always spends time to get you understand. We spent a lot of time going over problems in the text. Overall nice person and great teacher.
He expects alot but is really helpful. Hes nota pushoverlike some profs but if you want to learn this class is for you. He goes over alot of problems from the text and the HWs.
he's a great guy but def not the best at actually teaching a class...he is very vague and laissez faire about your education....i'd go for a different professor most of my class got NC's.
horrible teacher. he's a great guy and willing to help if you can't make an exam. if you're good at math, take his class and just read the book (no need to go to class if you do well on his tests)!
Wonderful Person. CALCULUS IS A VERY HARD SUBJECT; DON'T EXPECT IT TO BE EASY. If you put in your studying, it will pay off. Takes questions straight from the book. His grading is tough, though, and he does not curve.
very hard class. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF CALC. he teaches at a fast pace and if you dont get it you need to go to his office hours a lot to keep up.
funny guy..helpful with explanations after class, which you will probably need if this is your first calc. class..sometimes hard to keep up with during lectures, since he skips certain steps when working out problems; lastly, the tests are HARD! he def. makes you work for your grade..luckily he drops one or two..study often and go to the math labs.
Very nice guy and a good professor. Calc isn't an easy class, but Islas does all he can to make it easy. He's also a pretty funny guy, and always willing to help after class. You could do much worse as far as calc professors are concerned.
Does a lot of proofs which end up confusing the whole class. if you've never taken calc before, do not take this guy, he'll just confuse you. gives many opportunities to raise your grade. The final was ridiculously hard, no one in my class scored over a 64. dude can't teach
This guy is retarded and CAN'T TEACH! DON'T TAKE! He tells you to study one thing and puts the total opposite on the test. He is a nice guy but just can't teach, if you're good at math you can probably pass with a C or B MAYBE. If you are bad at math you aren't going to pass
Worst Proff. ever. He really cant teach. If you want to go to class everyday and sit there and be lost then he's ur man !!
this class was somewhat difficult. i took calc in high school and that definitly helped. if i hadnt this guy would be a little difficult to learn from. he is a nice guy and very helpful. he is also easily convinced to help the grades and does give extra credit. not a bad professor considerin its calc.
He's hilarious..he says the most random things in class. He's mostly an upper-level math teacher and this was a trig class so I think he expected more out of us. All the tests problems were from the chapter reviews in the book.
Dr. Islas was not very helpful whatsoever. In his teaching method, he seems to 'skip around' and doesn't explain things well at all. Unless you already have a base in calculus, I suggest finding someone else to take this class from.
(TRIG.). Avoid this prof. at all costs! In my math history, I have NEVER had to rely on a textbook so much in my life! When he TRIES to explain concepts in class, he completely beats around the bush, and leaves you totally confused. You must already know trig prior to the class or you will be left in the dust! I am an A/B student, and i got an NC!
Prof. Islas is very helpful if you are willing to visit his office hours. He is a genius. A background of physics and calculus is preferred before taking his class.
I had an extremely hard time keeping up in this class. I never had Calculus in High School, and was left behind many times during the lecture. After consulting with people who have taken the class before, they explained certain concepts so easily, yet this professor tried to come up with his own ways of teaching, and nobody but him can understand i
Im not good at math but this was an easy A. Daily quizzes are basically free attendance pts, tells you EXACTLY what u need to study in book and pulls test probs straight from book. Some ppl did poorly in his class but he did curve 1st test a lot, +30 pts on an 80pt test. Recommended + he has a good personality!
Nice guy but bad teacher, used poor examples and spoke with terrible english. Must use Math lab everyday if you take him.
It will be a difficult class but if you struggle, just visit his office. He is very willing to help you understand the concept. I definitely think its possible to pass his class and not get an NC. You just have to try and push yourself a little. He may not pronounce everything right but you just have to ask him to repeat whatever he said.
Do all the homework and go to him for help. He is very helpful one on one. Put in the work, the class is very fair.
really awesome teacher in my opinion, hes funny and really really helpful if you go to his office hours. yes, the class might be hard but you can definitely pass the class. tests were hard sometimes but he also curved alot of tests. you will have to push yourself to study and do the hw but you can def pass the class
Really nice guy, willing to help so definitely go to office hours. Hard to follow at times, I relied on the book a lot. Tests come from hw problems so highly recommend doing suggested problems and the final is ridicously hard. Curves tests though which saved my grade :)

Did not like this professor. He is very personable and funny, but end up confusing you on the material. I had the highest trig average at my HS and am having trouble in this class. I have never relied on the textbook so much for any class I have ever taken. And he likes to give general examples and then give popqizzes on something much harder.
The students in my class were so overly rude and disrespectful to him for no reason at all. He was a genuinely nice guy and was totally willing to help anyone if they asked. I got an A+ in this class because I studied and went to class. Everyone who failed did so because they were rude & didnt bother attending. I would recommend him.
Ok teacher. Optional attandance. Not the best at explaining the material but not the worst. The online stuff helps a lot too. Tests are online and you have to study a lot to get a good grade but it's manageable. A few of the kids in my class were obnoxiously immature and said random nonsense to him in class. Don't be like that. He gets sidetracked.
Really nice guy, funny as hell. I was never rude or disrespectful to him, and I attended every single class, for two hours three times a week (precalc). I still didn't pass, 3/4 of the class failed (D or less). Math is not my thing, but I've never not passed a class before. If you HAVE to take him...bring the book and teach yourself. goodluck.
He is the WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!! Furthermore, he made inappropriate jokes about americans that i found offensive! He doesn't speak english very well and he sucks at explaining math concepts! Avoid taking his class at all possible cost!
I took this professor this past fall and he's great! Very nice guy and is very helpful. Math is hard in general but if you study the guides he gives you and use coursecompass alot, you should get an A.
If you take him be prepared to teach yourself the math online. I ran into some trouble with the class and he was no help whatsoever, he only referred me to other people so he did not have to deal with my problem. He uses "CourseCompass" which teaches you the material so there is no point in going to class. He is also very hard to understand
First off, you cannot understand a word he says. Secondly, the math (supposedly the easy math class) is very hard. I went from a A to a C because of his teaching styles. Avoid taking him.
I regret taking this class. Don't take it unless you're already good at teaching yourself. Also, having to take all your tests on coursecompass is retarded. The practice tests are so long and cover so much that I lose hope. Nice guy in some ways, but not great at teaching or giving lee-way on grades--i needed one or the other.
Do NOT believe anyone who tells you this class is easy. LIES! Unfortunately he's a nice guy but I royally failed. He has a hissy fit if you leave the class early. Dont take this class.
Dr. Islas is a really intelligent man and he is super nice, but unfortunately, he can't teach pre-calc at all! He goes off on tangents in his lectures and starts deriving random things for no reason! Despite this, he is really nice, and he does care about his students, but unless you are really good at teaching yourself math, I would stay away.
This man is very smart, but he cant teach anything. He follows coursecompass.com and does nothing but read off of the powerpoints that course compass provided. He never answers emails and you cant understand him! He loves to pick on you if your not paying attention and humiliate you. Dont take this class unless you enjoy teaching yourself.
The basics: 1- Nice guy, bad teacher. 2- Has an accent which can be hard to understand. 3- Relies heavily on coursecompass.com, and uses that to "teach." 4- 4 tests, a final, hw due every Sunday night, quizzes due every Monday night. 5- I had to teach myself most of the content. 6- He means well, but I would not recommend this class. Not easy.
horrible teacher. doesnt help. dont buy the text book he doesnt use it just but the 50 dollar access code to course compass. def a teach yourself kinda course.
very easy class that you never have to go to. everything is done on coursecompass.com so dont spend the $100 for the book and the mymathlab pack when you can just spend $50. he grades the best 10 out of 13 hmwks and quizzes and there is three exams with the final replacing your lowest of the three exams. easy a if you keep up with work.
Teaches well you know what to expect on his tests because he tells you what to expect. Good teacher, except he changes up the syllabus.
VERY easy class. The only people who get bad grades are the ones who never showed up/never did the coursecompass work. Its a teach yourself kind of class, and you prob. dont need to show up, but he explains the work if you attend class. Any bad grades should not be blamed on this professor, because everything you need to learn the material is online
As he a teacher, he blows. HOWEVER, course compass, the tool you use to do homework/tests/quizzes, teaches you everything so 1) you dont need to go to class b/c you can teach yourself everything and its easier that way 2) DONT BUY THE BOOK!! just buy the course compass online.
Worst teacher ever! Can't understand him. Don't buy the book everything is online. He is really terrible at explaining math but I went to his office hours a couple times and he has a lot of stuff to teach his students about life. He's a cool guy but don't take him for finite!!
worst teacher i ever had tried to teach calc in pre calc
Terrible, by far the worst teacher I've had. THe accent makes him nearly incomprehensible at times. The book explains things much better than he does and is in plain english.
after the first test I stopped going to class. his class is useless since CourseCompass, where you do all the homework and tests (except for the final), explains everything better than he does. he did put practice tests up which helped a lot. I ended up with a B in that class only because the final was so easy and it counted for 25% of your grade
Overall fairly easy, can be confusing some times but just do the suggested problems and you will be good. Gives pop quizzes which are basically free points. Tells you exactly what to expect for the test and grades fairly. P.S. look out for his Trig tests they are impossible
I have to take this class over again....but then again I suck at math. Be prepared to basically teach yourself if you don't go to class...or if you just don't understand his accent. Most of the work is online on that coursecompass website where you do hw, quizzes and tests on.
Nice guy, but is extremely vague with lessons. Hard to understand him. If you don't have to take the class, DON'T!!!
Dr. Islas is the worst teacher I have had. First, everything was alright. We used the books, had online homework and quizes, and it was okay to understand what was going on. He then got rid of the book and online help and went from pre calc to calc. He taught us by showing an easy example, then giving us an impossible problem in a quiz everyday.
Islas may be a boring teacher but if you complete the online homeworks and quizzes before the deadline and frequently (not just one time) use the practice tests that Islas gives prior to the 3 tests and final exam, then you should get an A in the course.
I never had any classes with so much work to do, failed the second test, had to study really really hard for final, most of people who took this course because we are either communication or sociology major, although he made this 1000 course as hard as 3000. If you have to take it, be prepare for a lot of work.
So I got one the highest if not the highest grade in my class of 200 student and I would still recommend against this teacher. I am a good math student which is why I did well. Had I been any worse at math this class would have been hell. His lectures are worthless, it's all online. If you're anything less than great at math, do not take.
This class was very frustrating and a pain at times. He is not a very good teacher and its almost pointless to go to his class, everything is online. If you do all the hw, quizzes, practice tests and study you will be able to pull off a decent grade. Do not depend on him to teach you. use the website its very helpful! STUDY and you'll be okay.
He acts like a rockstar. (But he totally is...)
Really funny to say, but I browsed some his ratings islas wuz getting on mfg and I have to say this... first off, you guys are a little wussy. I mean, what do you want? A kindergarten teacher? He is hard sometimes, but there is NO problem understanding him and he is very helpful. I think some of my fellow raters need some special ed help. (wtf?)
Most of the works online but he's very fair and has a lot of perspective on life that's useful. That's what makes the class great. Super easy... unless, well,... you didn't learn basic 7th grade math in high school. :)
It's clear he really loves math, but the way he talks to the students kind of makes you feel like you have a lot to learn not just about math and learning stuff but also living and how to be a good person. The class is sooooo freakin' hard. I am happy Im in it though.
Good teacher. Good class. Will probably end up taking him again. If you take him, ask him about the walrus story.
Well,... he's not the best prof in the world but not the worst. He's super easy and he knows the material, but really I could have just taken this class completely online. Great personality though... I imagine his upper level classes are awesome.
The man is hard as beans. But he really cares about the students a lot and it shows. It's a huge frickin' class but somehow he makes you feel like he's looking out for you.
Just give the man the mic and let him go! ;) Honestly, I didn't need to take this course. It is so easy it's like grade school math all over again. But now that I've taken him, I will definitely take him again. Was worried I might not understand a foreign professor but he's super easy. No language barrier at all.
Islas is tough, or maybe I just suck. dunno. But his take on things is funny but in a meaningful, half-hearted but serious sort of way. I wish he taught history or something other than math. I am learning but really its a waste cause you just do all the online stuff. He's very easy to get though and super nice.
Useless class. Great teacher. Talent just going to waste. So sad. If you take him, make sure you bring up "the walrus".
really awesome guy. Makes you want to be good at math but doesn't make you feel bad for not knowing. :)
islas rocks. will take again. so nice he makes you feel bad when you're late
i was never very good at math before dr islas. now i understand a lot and god help me I might just like it... cool guy.
OMG! The walrus story is enough for me to take his class again! He is really, really nice and its like he feels bad when you dont get something. Such a sweet guy. ;)
Good teacher. Take again if I can.
He's friendly and really interested in helping you succeed. A really cool guy.
I hate to admit this, but he makes me want to be better at math. And the "walrus" story. If you take him, DO NOT try to mess with him because if not you will just become part of the "walrus" story. Awesome class. Super teacher. Tries hard and it shows.
Average class but he's an awesome teacher. Will take again if he has another class and if I HAVE to take math again. Super cool guy.
Islas is great. Mostly work is online. Class is too easy for me. But he handles a massive amount of students with the ease of a professional ringmaster.
I didnt like math before islas but now its ok. He gets sad when you dont lern it and it makes you want to get better.
islas is the man! wouldv'e given him perfect score for helpfulness but mostly the class is an online endeavor... then again, the class is huge. don't know how one man could possibly help everyone personally... he did for me though.
islas is cool. has a lot of fun stories and ramblings but still manages to communicate the course material very well. class is really, really easy if you have half a brain. would take him again. he's such a gentleman! ;)
Good prof. will take again
It's tough to really rate just him and NOT the class (which sucks). read some of his other reviews and can say I agree. He is a great guy and really shows concern for the students. the class is just such a waste. I have to take more math classes though so I will hopefully get him again for something more substantial. His walrus story is... amazing.
Super easy. super nice. wish all my professors were like him.
At times you have to teach the material to yourself. The professor doesn't always explain the material the way he should. Nice person, funny guy, but not the best teacher. Make sure you fully understand the practice tests as the questions are similar to those of the actual Exams.
First off, DO NOT TAKE FINITE MATH, unless you're good at math and statistics. Second off, going to class is a waste of time, he doesn't even answer your questions so it's pointless. You have to teach yourself. I would definetly not recomend him.
Islas is a nice person but the class itself is hard because coursecompass makes the tests are impossible!! I am so good at math and have taken Calc in high school but had to drop pre-calc!!
The fact that all those previous comments came around the same day, with similar wording and similar mention of some walrus story, makes me think that one person wrote all those reviews.
Not a very good teacher. I ended up teaching 90% of the stuff to myself. I pulled out a B after I realized I wasn't going to get any help from him. He isn't very organized and doesn't update your grade often at all so it's a guessing game. Definitely try to take someone else if you can.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE W/ ISLAS UNLESS UR WILLING TO TEACH FINITE TO URSELF. DO N E THING TO GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR UNLESS UR A GENIUS OR TAKE IT @ THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
Islas really is a great man. Finite is kind of different, therefore a bit hard. I got really frustrated with people in my class who focused so much on his accent and talked the whole time and then complained about their grades when they didn't even go to get help. Just do the online hw, he takes his test questions straight from it.
Worst class I took my first year, but I ended up with a B. Not a math person to begin with so I guess a large class didn't mesh well with my learning style. It doesn't help that he's a little hard to understand, and I didn't like that all hw & tests were on the computer. Luckily the final was on paper & MC - that's the best grade I got on any exam.
Do not take this class.
Going to class is useless. Do not take unless you are willing to devote endless hours trying to teach yourself this abstract style of math. Take with Barry Griffiths or anyone else for that matter. DEFINITELY NOT AN EASY "A" LIKE I THOUGHT
The professor really is a good guy. He is genuinely trying to teach... and "tries" to make it funny (not always works). However, the class itself is NOT an EASY A. Do A LOT of practice problems and use the supplemental work. Go to his office and he'll help and even give you curves on tests! He really does help if you actually ask for it
Everything is done online, the homework, the quizzes and the tests. He teaches ahead of the online software and is unorganized with his class notes. Math has never been my strongest point but even those who are good at it are struggling. No point in buying the book or going to class everything you need is in the software or at the math lab.

Insanely hard class, everyone did so bad on the test they had to offer extra credit. Everything is done online but going to class makes it easier. Nice guy though, tries to be funny and tries to help you learn the material. Will answer any questions in class.
Extremely hard class, If you think you are getting an easy A, forget it. I am genuinely good at Math and have never failed or had any trouble with a math course, but I had to withdraw from this course or else I would have failed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, IF ITS THE LAST THING YOU DO.
worst professor i have ever had at ucf. although he knows the subject he does not know how to teach it. i had to teach myself everything. gives a lot of homework and the tests are impossible.DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS!!
It's all on mymathlabs...Tests are very, very hard! He's not the best at teaching the stuff either. A good amount of homework. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! He'll give you partial credit on your tests that the program won't. Would not have passed the class if it was not for that. He's a funny guy, but almost half of the class fails/gets a No Credit.
After a few classes, I stop going to class. everything is online and his lectures didn't help. would recommend a different teacher if math is not a strong suit. take a lot of work and teaching yourself.
I worked terribly HARD to get a B in this class. Although, I am a very good student I know I would spend on average 8 hours a day on mylabsplus.com just to learn the material. I would recommend you to not take this course at UCF
Really easy but all online. Stopped going to class after a while and just taught myself online and went to take tests. Online help was better than going to class. Don't get the book. It's on the website. Overall, he was difficult to understand and lectures didn't help much. Probably not your best choice for professor.
i think i only went to class on the first day. you can not understand him at all. i stopped going to class and just bought the access code to do the online work. make sure you do it before the deadline. taught myself and got an A. the practice tests are just like the tests and just make sure you do them over and over and you will be fine.
DONOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO LEARN EVERTHING ON YOUR OWN... he explains nothing in class. i felt more lost going to his class than when i didnt go. so after a while the majority of the class stopped going. look for another teacher!!!!!! RUN.... RUN FAST!!!!
HORRIBLE TEACHER. Most of the work you'll have to teach yourself using the online course pack. The lessons in class hardly ever coincide with the homework, but aside from that, he just reads off of slides provided to him, and doesn't do a good job of explaining. Class time was a complete waste.
terrible, terrible teacher. his exams would contain lessons from hw that would be due a week after the exam, in addition to hw due on the same day as the exam. going to class is a complete waste of time because there is no organization to it, he just goes over random questions and never has a lesson plan. he wants his students to do badly.
Never went to class put about 10-15 hours of study time per test. HW due after the test is in the test. Did not use the book. Very difficult class, got an A, but don't expect to have a life along with this class
Funny guy, only a dozen or so people attended class out of about 300.. sucks for the people who didn't go because he helped me out a lot. Gives review for the exams that are great. Whether or not you are good at math, he is the professor to take. Received an A with ease.
Hard class but prof is very helpful. Attending class is very useful he gives reviews right before the tests and likes to give partial credit on problems.
Had a different professor for the first half calc 1 and did pretty well (solid B). He took over after then exam and my grades plummeted. The exam questions are completely unrelated to what you practice in class and in assigned homework. I will never recommend to anyone, even an enemy
This guy never once brought the book to class. His lectures are basically him saying: "any questions?". He hardly explains things through his accent and goes on long tangents about his sports experiences and does NOT give partial credit until half a dozen students begged him in my class. Worst teacher I've had at UCF, I learned more from the book.
Islas is the worst teacher. He doesn't even teach properly. He always gets lost in proving limites. Quiet honestly he does not teach and for that he cannot call himself a teacher.
Not an easy professor, but not difficult. He'll make you work hard for your grade, but very flexible and willing to help his students get a better grade. Plenty of extra credit opportunities and resources given. Do the homework, study, go to class, you'll do fine.
Dr. Islas is a great teacher. He's very helpful in class, answers questions, and has no problem explaining a concept more than once. Show up, do the homework, and study and you will have no problems passing his class. Great teacher over all.
In the beginning of the year he spent much class time on proofs, but after a couple classes he barely ever mentioned them. He is a good teacher, maybe a little quick, but he encourages us to ask questions in class. He was the extremely fair with partial credit and gave extra-credit opurtunities for most tests. An 'A' is possible, much work required
He likes his job you can tell. Calc 3 isn't an easy subject but if you have made it that far you already know what to expect.
Great Teacher! He gives A LOT of homework through WebAssign. But totally worth it! Extra-credit everywhere you look.
Dr. Islas is an awesome professor! He assigns a lot of homework but it's definitely worth it. Tests are very fair, and he offers plenty of extra credit. Quizzes are given in class, but they ended up just counting for extra credit. Dr. Islas not only covers the material thoroughly, he manages to maintain your interest throughout. Good prof & funny!
This guy gives LOTS of extra credit. for each test you can earn up to 10 points EC from the daily quizzes which are easy. If you pay close attention in class, you'll understand the material. Otherwise you can self teach yourself from the book if you miss a class or space out during a lecture. I found him to be a funny professor and I like the guy.
Pros: Only the first couple of exams were related to the HW. Easy daily quizzes. Cons: Teach yourself. Makes frequent unnecessary mistakes. At least 2 daily quizzes and an additional weekly Quiz. Weekly quizzes are hard. Final Cumulative Exam was not easy. Wastes time explaining the examples/theorems that are already explained in the book.
Calc 2 is hard..Dr.Islas' class is no different. However, he genuinely wants his students to pass. He graded fairly, tests were not overly difficult. The final was open anything (that wasn't an electronic device), at the expense of the final being harder. Do enough practice problems until you can do them quickly and correctly, and you will pass.
Weekly quizzes to help, not to hurt, you and your grade. Definitely cares a lot about his students. Attended most of the SI sessions in order to do good.
Harder tests than any other diff EQ tests I saw from other professors. Teaches with pen and paper and grades hw strictly. Half of the final was take home and impossible to do without the internet. Very easy class, but hard with him.
I had Islas for calculus 2 and 3. He's a very good instructor and his tests are fair and generously graded. If you work to understand the concepts you'll do well.
I thought this was a tough class. Dr Islas was great though. He proved every major theorem and built everything from the ground up. The course was a good mix of computational problems and proofs. I feel like he did a great job preparing students for MAS 3106. If you plan on taking this class you will need to study hard, this class is no joke.
Mandatory EXCEL course, pass/fail basis. Professor was very clear and the course itself was easy.
DON'T TAKE. Lectures are hard to follow since he assumes you remember everything from calc1&2. Exams and book hw are very hard. Practice tests were no help. He'll help if you go to his office but won't work through messy problems. I worked so hard to pass and it was wasted because he didn't tell us the final didn't follow the school's schedule.
Students complained about the first exam being too difficult and about too much homework being given. Islas offered make-up points on the first exam and cut down on homework in response. A very helpful teacher who listens to student concerns and answers all questions thoroughly.
Calc 3 can be hard at some points but Dr.Islas made it worse. He tends to mess up on examples. For tests DO NOT just study the practice tests he gives you. He doesn't take office hours seriously since he cancels or isn't there half the time. You can talk to him about the tests and he usually will give points if you explain what you did
I took Professor Alvaro Islas for both Calculus 3 and Differential Equations and scored a B. The trick to getting a good grade is talking to him in his office hours to get a feel for what he would put on a test or quiz. The first test is always the "quota test" aka the hardest but perseverance no matter the grade in the beginning will get you thru
The exams were hard and the online homework never prepared you for the tests. I always did the online homework and then hammered through the textbook. The studying for me was pretty relentless and the every exam average for the class ranged from a 60 to at most a 70. He does not curve either, his lectures are fast and he skips steps.
I first took this class with a horrible professor that inspired me to withdraw. I took it again with Prof. Islas and it was so much better! He is very good at explaining things and getting you to connect concepts. He's very willing to help and provides extra credit opportunities. The class is still tough, do the homework, quizzes every week.
He explains things well, but the tests are difficult. The weekly quizzes are a lot like the homework, but the tests are not. Good professor, but it is a difficult course!
Islas is not the best lecturer, I found it hard to understand the concepts as he explained them and would have to read the textbook to understand. However, Islas does want you to pass and works with the students to help them pass , if students didnt feel prepared for a test he would move it back, didnt think a questions was fair he threw it out.
Do not take his class if you are not a strong coder. The way he teaches this class is basically he throws you to the wolves. He'll show you the pseudocode in not the best fashion and then he'll just start coding without explaining really what he's doing. Further his exams are difficult compared to any of the work assigned. Take Probabilities
Professors like this man are the reason the UCF Math department isn't as good as it could be. Made a 3000 level course feel like a Phd level course, learned nothing from his over conceptualized lectures, and was never offered a single bonus or extra credit opportunity which is typical in math courses. No curve. A true shame.
He makes you work quite hard, and I had to resort to studying from the book often to reinforce harder topics. However, he's fair and a good lecturer. Go to his office hours as well, he is nice and helpful. It is not an easy class, but not "hard" if you put in the work practicing.
He'll make a test that is nearly impossible to finish, then grade it harder if he doesn't like you. His lectures consist of writing on a projector where half the time you can't read it, and there's discontinuity between steps. I approached him after class to ask a question, and he said the work is trivial and solutions are online. Doesn't care.
Teaches hard concepts in class, when asked about the basics calls them trivial. Assigns hours of textbook work, not for a grade but which appears on the quizzes or tests. Assigns hw for a grade which doesn't appear on the quizzes or tests. Grade is based on exams. Takes chunks of credit for arithmetic errors. Makes you work hard not smart.
Alvaro is not your average professor, no, Alvaro teaches with purpose. He relates math to the real world. Sometimes we would just have MATLAB days where he would show how cool and useful something was. I respected this most about him. Though stuff was tough, it was fair and I feel like I came out with useful tools at my disposal.
He's a fine professor, he does his job but relates a lot to proofs right off the bat- which for someone taking Matrix and Linear is a completely new concept. Makes it a little more difficult. If you're good with math you will probably do fine, but overall he's just another professor. Weekly quizzes and attendance counts 2/10 towards quiz.
Get ready to pay a fortune only to teach yourself Calc 2 the entire semester. His notes and work are sloppy, tests are much harder than his "reviews," and don't bother asking him questions because he'll just call them trivial and refer you to the book.
The course itself isn't all that hard that it's hyped up to be, it's all with the professor. This professor was not great , he skipped all steps to questions, assumes you know everything from Calc 1 and chooses problems from the book. He told us to drop out of the course if we did below average on test 1. Good luck and take another professor.
Great guy, okay professor. Will help outside of class, but during lectures he expects you to know what you're doing before class even starts. Exam questions come straight out of the textbook. Attendance "quizzes" every day in class that add up if you miss a lot. Overall really caring guy, just be sure you're ready to teach yourself.
Dont take if you've never dealt w/matrices before. Goes really fast, has horrible handwriting, and will breeze through concepts calling them trivial (mostly focusing on proofs). There's a quiz EVERY class. Gives plenty of practice tests, says the actual test will be similar, but half the questions on them weren't even on the actual exams. STAY AWAY
Very unprofessional, sloppy notes during lectures, often messes up example problems. Sends out announcements at 2 am about the class the next day. He basically encourages people to drop if they are struggling. When we transitioned into online learning, he expressed that he wasn't going to be easy on us. Daily quizzes on new material.
I had him through the pandemic, and he actually restructured the class more than just "replace projector with zoom". He explains how formulas are derived before introducing them, and tops it off with a dry humor. He does make the tests and weekly quiz questions less straightforward than other teachers, but he has a grade forgiveness so it's even.
His tests and quizzes are HARD. But he's a great, caring teacher and his inspiration and love for mathematics shines through. If you have a solid math background, you will get a lot from this class and should definitely take him. If you are not great at math, take another professor.
Get out while you still can Terrible lectures. Your entire grade is the tests, so you can't fail any. He grades to take away points, so your work has to be perfect or you'll lose most of the points. I had to teach myself the material, and it was double the amount of work it should have been. He'll make you feel bad for asking questions. 0 curve.
Test heavy calc 3 class with about 75% of them from tests. Final replace the lowest test grade if higher. Lectures are hard to understand as the pace of the class is very fast. Weekly quizzes based on weekly lectures. He does care about students who put efforts tho and help them in office hour. Tests are hard if you don't do well in quizzes.
Very homework heavy. At least 3 due a week. Sets some due at 7am for some reason. No extra credit, consistently low average test scores. Does not stick to his word as to when he will open something. Use the practice tests to study if you're taking this class. And do NOT try to cram... That won't work. I'd know.
Overall, Professor Islas is an incredibly understanding person (Extends deadlines for homework, allowing late submissions of quizzes and tests due to connection issues). He provides interesting tangents and good feedback for specific questions. Just make sure to stop him if you get lost, otherwise, he will skip a lot of steps and go quite fast!
Professor Islas is the best professor I have ever had at UCF. He is caring and thoughtful. His tests are hard but fair because they are similar to book problems. You have to put in the work to do well, and he will help you as long as you ask for it. There are lots of quizzes but they help you prepare for test. Go to his office hours!!
Took Islas this Fall for Calculus 2 and honestly was a big mistake. Pop quizzes every day in class on material learned that same day. If you don't understand something you had a 50/50 chance of him yelling at you. Calculus 2 is already a hard class but he didn't make it any easier, especially for those of us learning online this semester.
This was not an easy class, but for the most part I could understand what was being taught and ultimately succeeded in his class. Attendance isn't mandatory, however he gave daily pop-quizzes to grade participation. Many classmates struggled and relied on Discord for extra assistance, but overall I respect him as a person and enjoyed his class.
This is one of those professors that forces you to learn the material, you can't just float through. He really cares about the subject and wants students to do well - go to office hours and ask questions. Weekly quizzes are very useful to test your knowledge before tests. Solid choice if you are willing to work hard to grasp a difficult topic.
Had to teach myself content by reading from the textbook, his lectures were not good, and he refused to record them unlike any other prof. He often tested on content that was not expected and gave little to no partial credit. He was condescending and discouraging. He had a ridiculous policy asking for a picture of your ID every quiz/test. TERRIBLE.
Islas is a horrible professor who doesn't know how to teach. He is condescending towards students he doesn't like and acts as if the world revolves around him. He doesn't teach any of the material (which is incredibly difficult). Just take college algebra and save yourself the time.
Lectures are informational and fairly easy to comprehend. About 3 tests total including midterm and final. Weekly quizzes and homework are due, so just stay on top of your work. There are additional lectures provided in mylabs which helps. He works along with students on class activities and homework sometimes and is very helpful. 9/10
Everything is done through math xl. You get a quiz and hw each week. Tests are easy just do the study plan its the EXACT SAME THING. Had a 99 in the class until the final and it dropped me to a 94 because I got an 80. Not sure why but still recommend this teacher.
Tests were too hard and took up too much of the grade. Weekly quizzes that are sometimes in class or out of class. Don't bother showing up to class because he doesn't teach well, just watch prof leonard on youtube instead.
The man assigns pop quizzes and will move regular quiz dates to make sure you are paying attention. you have been warned.
Worst professor I have ever had. His handwriting is sloppy, messes up on his own made-up examples, no correlation between his "study guides" and the exams, non of the homework is on the exam so it's a big waste of time honestly. And he told us to drop the class or drop all our other classes to pass. He's okay with his exam average being below 50.
Reviews before: illigetimate. Pop quizzes are for no credit. All exams-open notes for us. He goes a little quick, but people asked him the dumbest questions late in the course but took time to go over them nicely. Great professor. Take him out of everyone else. Tough material, but he really wants you to succeed & prepare for future harder classes.
Class is just a mess, he is a nice person but his hand writing is sloppy, his examples in lecture are bad, his tests don't have any problems pertaining to the lectures, homework is scaled at like 5% and non of the problems on it are tested so it's basically useless, and has had almost all the test averages below passing and has not curved one.
Prof Islas was no joke, if you're a good student and study you will get a decent grade. Pay attention in class and study outside of it but don't expect to be lazy and pass
At first, Professor Islas didn't seem so bad. Homework, lectures, quizzes and exams were all reasonable. But as we get closer to the end of the semester it's like a completely different class. This was a mixed mode class so lectures weren't helpful at all and I ended up teaching myself everything. Some of his notes weren't even correct! Do not take
Overall I think he's alright. He's pretty entertaining during class in my opinion and obviously cared for his students. Academically kinda meh. I only really learned the content through doing HW not lecture. Test were not too hard but no cake walk either, If you do all the HW you should be fine for the most part. Hard class regardless of prof.
Great guy and would go over the tests the day before and then give us the same thing with different numbers. If not then would do open notes tests (Such as the final). Very kind guy but not the best at lecturing. With that said, if you constantly ask questions you are able to learn and he makes sure to explain.
Islas was very caring and wanted students to do well in the course. His lectures weren't great but the tests were very similar to practice tests and the final was open note. He dropped 5 quizzes and replaced the lowest midterm with the final if it helped your grade. If you put in the work to learn the material, it is easy to pass.
God awful. Lectures are mostly pointless because he will teach the content in an entirely different form than how the homework will display it. All in all just terrible
He's an okay prof. Lectures are really just him explaining examples and his methods don't align with the hw. You have a quiz every week. Five are dropped but your grade is dependent on quizzes. I wouldn't recommend him unless you plan on teaching yourself.
I have never had a professor this awful. I know some would say they like him but I really cannot say why. He has no posted notes, no modules, no PowerPoints, no video recordings, all he gives are quiz solutions that he did not even write himself, and if he does the solutions are wrong. He gave students open notes last semester unlike this semester.
Professor Islas is an overall alright professor. He is not very clear when teaching, I got very lost in so many classes towards the end. The class is very test heavy. Partial credit is given on the exams thankfully.
Hard to keep up in class, he writes quick & sloppy handwriting. Notes aren't uploaded after, so my lecture notes were full of holes & not very useful. Learned the content from youtube and doing questions over and over again. Quizzes and exams weren't too bad and the practices helped, final was very hard. Generous partial credit is what saved me.
Nice guy. Very confusing lectures. Learned to do the problems and not fully understand the material
Islas does not teach he just speeds through examples expecting you to know everything. Hes kind in office hours but his lectures are useless. He gives out practice exams and the exams themselves are difficult but doable. He drops a lot of quizzes as well. The graders are pretty harsh but you can contest grades in office hours.
Very hard to get a lot from his lectures since he doesn't have the best handwriting and flies past alot of information. All the notes you will be taking are based on the notes that he will be taking in class and if you have trouble reading his handwriting you are at a disadvantage. He talks a bit quietly and he doesn't post any of his notes online.
Isn't the best at explaining material, which makes it hard to understand what is happening. Had to use the textbook (which is thankfully free) to understand the material better. There are weekly quizzes, that mimic the exams, but can be pretty hard if you don't/forget to study for them.
Absolute terrible professor. In his lectures, he only does practice problems and then halfway through he realizes he did it wrong and does it over. Mind you the problems take up to a page and a half. Exams are okay-ish but the grading makes no sense. DON'T TAKE HIM THIS CLASS HAS BEEN HORRENDOUS AND RUINED MY SEMESTER. HE IS UNORGANIZED AND LOST!
My doctor has better handwriting. Often skips 3-4 steps when solving solutions and on more than one occasion would stop solving mid problem and plug it into an online calculator. I could not warn you more. Save your GPA
Lectures are useless and stopped attending after second week. Only showed up for quizzes and tests. haven't done homework since its 80 dollars for not having affect in my grade after all. Test are not impossible but sometimes he can make it tricky. Has quizzes every week but on test weeks he gives the answer so you can have full credit on that quiz
Never met someone as bad at his job as he is. He will post the wrong solutions to problems when giving practice quizzes and tests, he showed people's grades in the middle of class, and his lecture are extremely disorganized. The class isn't super hard but I just don't recommend the headache he can give you. Take this class at Valencia.
As all the others say lectures are useless and he is confused sometimes. But tests are not that hard, if you can do medium level problem on textbook test should be fine. There was 3 tests and one final. If final grade is higher than on of the exams he replaces. Quiz every week but on exam week the quiz answer will be given. No deadline for HW.
Everyone is very critical of Islas. The lectures can be confusing but overall I did learn from them with some occasional help from the textbook. He gives example quizzes/tests and the problems on those are nearly identical to the exam he gives. Class is hard as it is with most profs but if you put in the time you will be able to pass.
This class would be a MESS without the practice tests and quizzes. Seems to be a good guy, and helped me out with rounding at the end of the semester. Content of the class is hard, and in the quizzes and especially the exams he puts emphasis on those difficult topics. Both questions on exam 3 were the worst taught units of the semester.
Tests 85%, HW 5%, Quizzes 10%. Lectures can be a nightmare at times, but he's also funny and will explain concepts if you attend office hours. Tests and content are difficult, and grading criteria can be frustrating at times but the test reviews he posts from previous semesters are VERY helpful as they are in the same format as the actual exams.
Professor Islas is nearing retirement and clearly does not want to still be teaching. He doesn't post his notes online, has sloppy handwriting, makes a ton of mistakes, moves quickly, lectures aren't helpful for learning for the homework or tests. I had to teach myself everything. Pros: he isn't mean and he's occasionally funny.
Took Prof. Islas for Calc II. Not a bad teacher, but not a great one either. Just goes over textbook pieces everyday. Study material ROUTINELY to pass. Expect annoying daily attendance, weekly quizzes on Mondays, & SLIGHTLY easier exams (4 total). No groups quizzes & stupid MALL hours. Hard class, okay professor. DO NOT crunch. Master the textbook.
Professor Islas is a great teacher when it comes to communicating with students. He is always accessible during office hours and gives very helpful reviews before each test. He does his best to ensure you pass and thinks of every student as family.
Professor Islas is a nice guy, but his lectures weren't helpful for the weekly quizzes or the exams. He doesn't have the best handwriting, doesn't post the notes online, and moves quickly. He dropped some quizzes and homework at the end, but my grade only went up by 2%; be prepared to teach yourself a lot, and try going to his office hours.
Islas isn't a bad professor, but not good either. He goes through proofs and examples in the textbook quickly and with bad handwriting in lectures, and there's things in quizzes and tests that he doesn't cover well, such as conceptual content. He is accessible and caring in his office hours though, and is funny in class. Most stuff was self-taught.
Professor Islas is a great teacher. He's caring and accessible with his students. He teaches useful course material in the most enjoyable way. This is a hard course, he gives daily pop quizzes for attendance(5%) and weekly quizzes(15%) that are harder than the general exams(50%). You must study and work hard for everything in this course.
He was really nice and took time to memorize our names but the way he explained things was hard to understand. The course is hard by nature but he didn't make it engaging at all and just worked through problems on the board with shallow explanations.
AWFUL! Tells you one thing is on a test, then puts another. Do not waste your time studying for this horrid class. It will not matter curve ball every single test. No extra credit barely gives partial on tests. Even if he is the only professor teaching it, do yourself a favor and delay your graduation date by a semester.
I'll give it to him, he is a very nice person and always available outside of class. The one thing I have to say is that the lectures are bad. I couldn't understand what he is writing nor what he is saying. If u r a person that looked up your stuff online to learn, you will lose points here and there because you didn't do it the way he taught it
Professor Islas is a very funny guy, and he is also a very good professor. Class is test and quiz heavy, but as long as you study there is no reason to have a failing grade. Islas is very approachable and takes his time in answering your questions.
Islas isn't THAT bad. If you can't find a better prof you'll still be okay. If you actually put in the work you will do fine in this class. A lot of homework and weekly quizzes. Questions directly from free textbook & he tells you where to find them. Gave clear instructions for what would be on each exam. People who say otherwise didn't show up.
Was a very nice guy and very accessible during office hours. Lectures were pretty awful though, he didn't post his notes for one to review and would stumble when trying to explain some concepts (like Laplace Transformations and Delta Functions). If possible, take a different professor for Diff EQ if you really want to understand the material well.
What can I say? This class was a total disaster. Try not to take him for differential equations, if you do, you better know what you are doing. If you take it with him you are gambling and playing with your time and money. He is tough when grading and gives very little partial. If you never struggled in a class, you will now if you take him.
Good lord where do I even start. He changed the syllabus 2? 3? times, tested on things unrelated to what learned, not to mention he didn't even know how to do what he was teaching. Halfway through an exam he held a "review session" to teach us the material on the exam. Do yourself a favor and delay graduation if you must. Hopefully he retires soon.
AWFUL. This professor is a terrible grader. No matter how hard you try, he doesn't care. He knows your paper, not you, and gives no partial credit. The tests have material you've never seen, and studying won't help. I took this class twice and failed both times. AVOID if you don't want to waste your time or money.
Lovely man and extremely understanding of external situations however, pretty tough grader and would occasionally take points off on quizzes where you used textbook methods as opposed to his methods.
