He makes you guess on things that hardly anyone would know or care about. Assigns homework before the topics are covered, and quizzes you over material not covered. Going to the SI sessions helps you more than he does. Not a fan of him as a teacher at all. Nice, but don't expect to do well unless you teach it to yourself.
His teaching was awful. We would learn material after homework was due. He never explained things well. It was simple material made complicated!
go to the SI sessions and you will pass the test easy he takes the SI and his practice test on the test
Dr A is awesome! He knows what he is talking about and is extremely approachable and helpful if you have problems. If you study the practice tests you will be fine. The homework isn't bad at all, you have a week to do it and are never far behind in lecture.
Dr. Alamirano is a fantastic teacher. I was always interested during lecture. He engages the class all the time, which helps keep things interesting. He is always willing to take questions during class. Makes himself very accessable during office hours.
Worst chemistry teacher I ever had. He does not clearly state the material that he will test on. His SI sessions are useless because i went to them but still failed the tests. He is very approachable for help because that is the only way you will get help to understand the material.
Dr. A is is good professor in general. Chem151 is a general chemistry course and covers a wide array of topics. If you have good study habits it's really an easy course. The only issue is his lack of mastery of the English language. It makes conveying complex material difficult. This can detract from the material. Other than that - great course!
Dr. A is a very talented and intelligent teacher. To do well in this class you must study and attend class regularly, but not because he is a "bad" teacher by any means. If you put forth the effort in this class it tends to build on top of itself and gets easier as the semester goes. He's very nice and his accent is the one draw back.
A nice teacher who means well and wants his students to succeed. However his accent is very thick and since he doesn't use the white board- you don't always know what he is talking about. He also doesn't post his lectures online. which is fine normally- but if he is behind schedule he skips through them and you never know what was on the slides.
One of the worst teachers of my college career. I repeat DO NOT TAKE him. You can never understand him and I always dreaded the tests as he would not specify what was on them. Save yourself the sleepless nights, tears, and anger and NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS.
I would say one of the worse teachers I have had at NAU. He doesn't communicate what he will test you on. His study guides consist of 10-15 sentences. When teaching a subject he uses PPs and goes through them very fast, too fast. He waves his hands around as if that would make you understand a topic. Oh did I mention he doesn't speak english well?
Worst teacher I have ever had. Speeds through lectures and consistently miscommunicates and gives inaccurate information that doesnt agree with the book. His "study guides" are horrible and half of the material is not on the test. He states his class is about memorization but does not clarify what to memorize He is ruining GPA for graduate students
He gets a bad rap. Give him a chance. He's a good professor, and he's MUCH BETTER IN 151 THAN HE IS IN 130. He is very nice and means very well. GO TO THE SI SESSIONS IF YOU ARE CONFUSED. There is a language barrier but it isn't bad. Those giving him a bad review likely didn't study and failed 130 - which is pathetic. APPLY YOURSELF.
Dr. A is one of the best professors at NAU. He is extremely helpful and very personable. His lectures are concise and to the point. Ask him for help and you will do very well in his classes.
I took CHM130 last semester and I must say, Dr. A deserves better than the current rating he has. It just doesn't seem fair at all.
He means very well! He is a very nice proffessor andif you LISTEN, like you should in class, he explains EVERYTHING very well!
Second time having Dr. A as a professor. Passed within the top 15% of the class. PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS. He's a good professor, he means very well, he's very nice, and I recommend going and talking to him during office hours (he's fun just to shoot the breeze with). He's kind of adorable, like a little kitten.
Very nice teacher. I have never seen a teacher at this level curve so much for a class, even though some of his students have high A's.
Dr. A was a vey helpful teacher who meant well for his students. Go to class! He never uses the book and all of his tests are similar to the practice tests. One of my favorite teachers
One of the best CHM 151 prof. on campus. He gives a strong foundation if planning on going into higher level CHM classes. His accent didn't interfere with my comprehension and he stated that he would repeat anything someone couldn't understand due to his accent. He was very nice and great about answering questions, and gives lots of extra credit.
He is a pretty good teacher, and explains things well. However, he likes to give a lot of trick questions on his exams. And sometimes, things we hadn't covered yet were on the test! He's a good teacher, but if you're looking for someone that cares about his students, he isn't the teacher for you.
As long as you show up to class it is pretty easy. Going to Recitation and SI classes will hel your grade! He will answer any questions
Dr. A is an awesome teacher! I was terrified to take chemistry but it was not bad at all! The SI sessions helped me SO much! Dr. A truly cares about his students success. I never thought I would enjoy chemistry but this was my favorite class this semester. Take up every extra credit opportunity and work hard you will do great!!
Dr. A is a great teacher! He actually cares about his students and takes the time to know them! Take every extra credit opportunity you can. And make sure you take the time to study and you'll do fine!
Dr. A is a great teacher. I was so worried about chemistry because I had a bad time with it in high school, but h is really good at explaining things so if you attend class everyday you will do well! It was nice how he dropped the lowest test score, as well as offered a lot of extra credit. He's also very nice and concerned with your success!
Not a terrible class. Dr. A is a great teacher and understanding of students' difficulties. So much extra credit was given throughout the semester. Attend class regularly and it will be easy to get an A
Dr. A was great if you put forward effort, ad stated above there are so many extra credit opportunities and if you show him you are trying he will help you. I am very glad I took this course with him.
Dr. A is the best professor I have ever had. He cares alot about his students, I learned so much in his class and would recommend him to anyone! Choose DR. A! He does have an accent but very understandable and fair! You show up to class and do your work you'll get an A! Also go to office hours!
Dr. A made chemistry a lot easier than i ever expected. He prints notes for you, all online homework that follows exactly what you just learned. Tests are pretty straight forward if you understand the topics well. Definitely an easy A if you add a little effort!
My grandmother died, so I wasn't able to take a test. He wouldn't let me retake it. Unsympathetic, and callused. All around mean, and hard to understand.
Fantastic teacher, he explains this extremely well and really cares about the students. He gives lecture notes out instead of using the book, so if you have him don't spend money on getting the book. The class is difficult but as long as you watch the videos and show up to class you will do fine.
Goes well out his way to prevent the rounding-upcurving of grades. Completely indifferent to your actual level of topic understanding. Avoid like the plague.
Dr. A is by far the best professor I've ever had. He presents the information in a concise format and he takes the time in class to help anyone who is struggling.
Dr. A is a great professor! I was nervous and not excited to take Chemistry but by the end of the semester, I actually really enjoyed the class and Dr. A was the best professor I had. I actually enjoyed the class so much that I am considering changing my major to Chemistry! Definitely recommend choosing Dr. A as your professor!
Loved Dr. A. Super helpful and approachable.
He's not a boring lecturer and he goes over stuff again if you let him know you are confused on something. He made Ochem not so impossible.
Dr. A is very helpful and really cares about his students learning the material. Don't let reviews of "hard tests" and "no curves" scare you- he gives extra credit on tests instead. If you are a hard worker, you will pass easily. He notices when students try hard, and rewards them accordingly. Very fair and helpful at his recitation. Also, toned.
I didn't like him that much. His video lectures are too long and his class is very boring. Find a different chem teacher.
Dr. A is a fantastic prof! He took over for Ramos for biochem, & even though everything was in shambles, he helped everyone with whatever they needed & he did his best to bring stability back! He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities, and relates the material to real life. I would recommend him to anyone! I got an A because of him!
Expect a lot of online homework, some studying on your own, and study before the day of your test.
He's awesome... funny... a bit of an accent but totally understandable, uses sapling, his tests are a mixture of multiple choice and long answer... you can get an A if you work for it :)
Not a good teacher at the least, class is confusing and has no fun aspects to it. I used to like chemistry, but now I see it as a chore.
I am not good at chemistry, at all. Like most Bio majors, I had a deep fear of taking O Chem. Dr. A rewards students that he sees are actually trying. Clicker questions add up for points, & he starts to offer extra credit towards the end of the semester. He is very friendly in office hours and easily approachable. If you work for it, you will pass.
I think he just may be the best professor I have ever had. He gives you every opportunity to succeed and explains things over and over and over to ensure you understand. He offers extra credit, plenty of opportunities for office hours, and always answers every question. Take this class if you wanna understand Chemistry!
Dr. A. He is hilarious in class and he will help you a lot if you go to his office hours or recitation. Sign up for his recitation because his weekly quizzes will be pretty similar to the recitation worksheet. Watch his online videos and study his notes because his true and false questions are tough. He gave some e.c. at the end and it saved my A.
Avoid this teacher like the plague. DO NOT take this course in the summer. He gives quizzes everyday and expects you to be an expert at the material in less than 24 hours which is impossible for people who work or have other classes. I regret so much taking this course with this teacher. Save yourself now, take chem 360 in the fall or spring.
Great professor! Really wants his students to understand the material.
I absolutely loved taking chem 360 with this teacher. He is so passionate and so knowledgable. He really cares about his students. I learned more from this teacher than I have from any of my other science teachers at NAU. If you are eager to learn and care about your future and being successful take him. You won't regret it. BEST TEACHER EVER!
Dr. A was a great teacher! I was retaking the class after failing it with another professor. He printed out the notes but left out key points so students had to pay attention to lecture. HE HATES TECHNOLOGY SO DO NOT BRING A LAPTOP. He will call you out in class. If you study and work hard you should easily pass his class.
I voted Alvin for prez 2k16
I really like Dr. A! He's super nice and has incomplete outline notes that he takes you through during lecture, which is helpful. He can be kind of scattered sometimes and has a bit of an accent, but you can still understand him. His tests are pretty hard, the conceptual questions will kill you. Overall he's a pretty good choice!
Dr. A is a decent chem prof. He gives you a print out of his notes to compensate for his heavy accent. There is some language barrier here so be aware of that. He seems to get frustrated with students for not understanding and wants you to figure it out on your own.
Dr. A is a funny, albeit salty, professor. He makes it clear that he cares/ wants you to succeed but can be hard to see eye-to-eye with. He takes his job very seriously and expects you to take the class as seriously as he does. Be careful about how you word questions. If he thinks you weren't listening and therefore don't understand, he'll get mad.
He is a really great professor overall. He gives you 3 chances to take each weekly quiz, but there are big chunks of homework. He is very clear on what he wants you to know for the tests. He cares for his students, but is hard on them because he wants everyone to pass. I am taking him for higher chemistry by choice.
Dr. A is a great professor. He really knows how to get the most out of his students and is very generous with extra credit. Make sure to attend class and be aware he does have an accent.
I loved taking chemistry with Alvin. He explained hard concepts clearly and is very willing to help you as long as you are willing to put in effort. He does not give you busy work, but rather gives you homework that will help reinforce your understanding of concepts you learned in class. He also gives out guided notes during his lectures.
Dr. A cares about his students so dearly. He is very sweet and wants you to succeed. The only way you won't pass is if you don't try.
Dr. A is a real sweetheart. He genuinely cares about his students, (he tries to learn your name, regardless of the class size), and wants you to succeed. His office hours and recitation are super important, and you can get extra credit/review from showing up for them. Go to them-they will save your grade.
Dr. A. is a great professor, he prints out the notes and thoroughly goes over everything that is on them. He uses clicker questions for attendance and to make sure everyone is understanding the material. He really cares about his students, and although this class involves a lot of work, you'll get an A if you practice and pay attention.
Dr. A is fantastic! I had never taken a formal chemistry class before, so I was nervous when I saw it was mandatory, but he made all the information very clear. He awards extra credit for office/TA/SI hours, so go to those. Although he seems a bit intimidating, he cares about students and wants them to succeed. Definitely one of the best chem prof.
Dr. A knows what he's talking about and he's really good at explaining it, but sometimes he can be a little rude if you ask questions he literally just answered. He wants his students to do well, but wants you to put in the effort. Most homework and quizzes are online, but attendance points are on clickers. Go to SI sessions to solidify concepts.
Dr A is amazing! When I took high school Chem and got a C, I was terrified of taking it in college. But Dr A ensures that every student understands the material with his through lectures and office hours. His class does make you work for an A, but in the end, you'll understand the material all the better.
Altamirano is a really good lecturer but you have to pay attention and write everything he says down. He's very clear and organized. The exams can be tough and he doesn't curve. He does give plenty of opportunities to earn extra credit. He has weekly quizzes that you need to study for. He's a great professor and tries hard to learn everyone names.
Dr. A is an incredible professor. Chemistry has never been a subject I've been confident with so I found it difficult but Dr.A gives you plenty of opportunities to earn some extra credit and raise your grade. He sometimes moves too quickly in lecture but makes himself available for office hours if you have questions. He genuinely cares if you pass
My biggest issue with Dr. A is that he has a massive ego. He told us in the middle of our exam that he wrote the multiple choice questions to trick us and no one should get them. He also told us that our class average on that exam was a 52% because we just don't listen to him. He's a brilliant man, but does not teach well.
Treats his students like they are in highschool. An example of this is him making everyone put there bags in the back during tests. Takes 30 min out of lecture after test to lecture the whole class about the terrible test average.
Altamirano can be a little condescending to his students, which is annoying. However, he gives you everything you need for his exam in the notes, so if you take decent notes and study it's fine. He also hands out a lot of extra credit if you show up to class. Definitely difficult, but he doesn't demand anything unreasonable or that he doesn't cover
I have never had someone make Chemistry make more sense than he has this semester. He really cares about his class, and it shows. People only don't like him if they are slacker students who like to text in class and be rewarded for minimal effort. Honestly, he is one of the greatest profs in the Chemistry department, 100% recommend!!
It would be easy to give Dr. Altamirano a poor Rate My Professor score as Organic Chemistry is undoubtedly a difficult course. However, this does not make him a poor instructor as he provides all the resources you will need. It's important for one to understand that if they wish to take this class they will be challenged in a good way.
You have to go into this class knowing that it will be really hard. But Dr. A tries to make it as painless as possible. I recommend doing every extra credit opportunity because it can make a difference in your final grade. He can be a little hard to understand but its definitely worth it. I wouldn't have enjoyed the class with any other teacher.
This is honestly one of the hardest courses a college could offer in terms of volume of content, but Dr. A is able to make biochem painless and even fun at times. Tons of extra credit overall and curves on the exams. He is a very approachable guy even though he seems intimidating, go to office hours and he is more than willing to help!
Dr. A made a very difficult class easy to enjoy and learn. He was very funny which made the class enjoyable.
I though Altamirano was a great professor. He demands a lot from you but compared to other chm152 professors he is the best one to teach you everything you need to know. Wants you to take his tests very seriously, but the course has a lot of points coming from the homework and at home quizzes! The final for us was exactly like the practice exam!
Dr. A is a professor that gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Your hw and quizzes are easy points so do not settle for less than a 98+ on assignments (you will see how easy it is just very time consuming). Lecture notes are printed for you so just take good notes and study those for the tests. He loves smash burger. Will ask for a letter.
Lectures arent bad but then he hands you the test and its so hard. Doesnt give any form of study guide and tells to to memorize usually 3 packets worth of notes. Do that and still get trick ?s. Go in and ask for help and get basically told to do better. Barely tells his SI anything. Your lucky to get out of a test w/ higher than a 60%.
Dr. Altamirano is a phenomenal professor. I wont lie, Biochemistry is a very difficult course, but Dr. A geniunely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He can be a little salty at times, but that is only because it can be frustrating to teach when people are on phones. Super funny guy, best professor Ive ever had! I love his class.
His test are hard, he says use the homework for practice but it really doesnt help. sign up for recitation that might help. but his test averages were super low no curve but he does offer extra credit you turn in your exams at the end of the semester. well worth the 15-20 points. overall he lectures are boring cant understand and goes too fast .
Dr. Altamirano was a good professor, but is a very rude and disrespectful person. The class is not very difficult if you attend every lecture. The online homework is an easy A. His tests are random, so be expected for questions you've never seen in lecture. If you go to his office hours, he will be very rude and make fun of you. Avoid taking.
Ochem is a hard class as it is, but I found it bearable with Dr.A. There are daily points for attendance/participation (iclicker) and these add up so GO TO CLASS. He's all about personal effort when it comes to his students so don't be afraid to go to his office hours and ask for help when you need it. Dr. A is hilarious and lectures are clear.
This was a hard class but he made it enjoyable. I really appreciated how he gave the students opportunities for extra credit. You can tell that he cares a lot for the students and wants you to pass.
As long as you care about this class and work hard, Dr. A will do everything he can to help you! He is very funny, and made lectures enjoyable! I usually hate chemistry, but Ochem became my favorite subject because of Dr. A! SI's helped a lot as well, and he rewards you for going to them! Put in the effort and it will be a great course!
I had Dr. A for CHM 230 as well. He is a good lecturer and relates many topics to real life examples that are easy to understand. He makes the class laugh almost every lecture. The online sapling is an easy A and the tests are difficult but not if you pay attention, study, and show up to every class
The exams in this class are nothing compared to what he talks to in lecture. He doesn't give you any study guides or any type of notes to prepare you for his hard exams besides saying to read over the in class notes and you'll be fine but you won't be this class is so difficult and I do not recommend him.&Good luck getting an email response back.
The worst professor I've ever had. This class was impossible. He never responded to my emails when I asked for help and his tests were impossible. His lectures made no sense. He obviously does not care about his students. He is unbelievably rude. I will definitely make sure the right people at NAU hear about his poor teaching skills.
I absolutely loved Dr. A. His tests are hard but if you attend class and engage, you will succeed. I enjoyed going to classes and felt like I actually learned useful things, instead of just what would be on the test. Amazing professor and I have a lot of respect for the guy.
This professor was the worst professor I have ever taken. This class made me cry and was my breaking point. Your grade is made of 4 tests and a final, some homework and video questions. Tests are 50% of your whole grade and I usually get all A's and this was my first C (trying my hardest too). He never answers emails and is overall absent.
Ochem sucks no way around it. Took this during Covid so everything is online. I heard Dr A is great in person but he came off as indifferent online and maybe the way he was trying to get us to understand doesn't work if I can't see his face? Def use SI and TA for support. Can't fall behind!! Ask for help!! Don't be prideful!!
Messy and unorganized prof that requires book reading then only does examples you already learned from the book so lectures have very little new material. Doesn't put in the effort to understand BBlearn which makes students' lives harder. Often writes wrong numbers for problem and/or gets the answer wrong and has to be corrected by students.
You'll be better off doing Khan academy and testing out. If you want to watch someone scribble on slides for 2 hrs a week without making a point this is also for you. Prof doesn't understand the software he uses and his lectures are not helpful. I was able to scrape by primarily off the book (online, slow to load)
I had to go off the book, lectures were completely unhelpful. For a class that's mostly plug and chug you are not provided an equation sheet. You have to make your own from the book as the equations are near impossible to find on the messy note PowerPoints.
He was by far the worst professor I have had in the chem department. He means well but speeds through lectures and then assigns homework you won't even go over in class for two weeks. Be prepared to teach yourself 90% of the material if you want a good grade. It's a good thing he won't be teaching 152 next year.
one of the best chem professors I've ever taken. He explains everything really well, and will go back over stuff if everyone does not understand a concept. Really funny, and passionate about the subject!
He was so bad, I wanted to give him a zero. But thats not possible so I give him a 1.
Chemistry is already a different topic let alone Ochem but Dr A is an amazing professor through and through. He makes concepts clear and has packets which he gives that makes the lectures easy to follow. Overall a good professor teaching a tough course
I would take this professor again and plan to in the next semesters. His teaching is a little difficult but if you attend SI's and recitations you will be set. I recommend him if you aren't sensitive and lazy.
Overall, Dr. A is a nice person, but tests are extremely difficult and nothing really compared to the lectures and homework. Be prepared to do lots of homework and quizzes. Expect to have lots of studying to do. I definitely suggest to go to the SI and tutoring sessions for this class and take advantage of any extra credit.
Dr. A's class was the hardest class I've ever taken. Be prepared for this class to be your top priority. All in-class time is used for lectures and exams. Dr. A covers material quickly so you will have to teach yourself 95% of the class. I would recommend taking your own notes instead of using the note packets as they don't match the material.
Ochem is going to suck no matter what, and Dr. A is an alright guy, but this class is so incredibly difficult. He moves on so quickly, and you are pretty much required to go to SI sessions and join recitation. He teaches this course as if we do not have 5-6 other classes to manage. I cry every single lecture because I'm so lost.
Dr. Altimirano is a great guy, but get ready for a super hard class. He gives short exams every two weeks and 1-2 homework assignments every week, so there Is not much time to study. If you aren't the best at chemistry, be prepared for this class to be your main focus.
Had him for Ochem and Biochem. He is a fair professor, show that you put forth the effort and he takes notice. Chem does not come easy for me nor am I the best test taker. But his class is all bout the cumulation of points. DO THE HW it can save your grade if you are not a good test taker. Also go to TA, SI, or office hours he MAY give extra points
Dr. A is one of the best professors I have had at NAU. He was very clear about what to expect in his course and he curves all exams by 10 points. His pre-lectures were definitely the key to grasping all of the material, but his lectures were great with tons of analogies to help understand everything a bit more.
Dr. A cares about teaching chemistry and takes his job seriously, which is how it should be. He is blunt about how hard you need to work in his class, and to succeed in the real world. He is a good lecturer, and everything on the quizzes/exams are in the lectures.. Attend class ready to learn, study hard and long, and you will succeed.
He is the best chem professor I've had. His class is difficult, but he makes this clear on the first day; he is willing to help you if you make yourself known to him and prove you're putting in the work. I 10/10 recommend going to as many recitations as you can and DO THE HOMEWORK! It helps big time. Show up to class because he gives points for it.
Lectures are "mandatory" in the sense that it is a part of your final grade, but you would be better off watching The Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube rather than going to class or watching his lecture videos.
If you don't have thick skin don't take this course. During Summer of 23, he seemed abrasive, unorganized, and classes went 30 minutes over every period. If you want to succeed in this course, don't fall behind, show up everyday, and put the effort in. I hope he turns around like other reviews have said, but right now it doesn't seem like it.
Yapper for real
Dr. A is a rough prof. He yells during lecture, and will say annoying things as "this is common sense". Yeah, for him its common sense since he has been teaching the class for so long but it is not like that for first time learners learning ORGANIC CHEM. go to class, listen, watch vids he posts, go to SI, join the recitation.
Dr. A truly cares about his students. I went in to 230 expecting it to be difficult but I found that to not be the case at all. He articulates and explains the concepts very well and gives you time to process what you're learning. I would definitely recommend him if you have to take 230.
Never been great in chem but got a 98 in CHM230 because Dr. A is just that good. He helped me understand tough concepts that I would have never gotten with another professor. This should be one of the hardest classes you take in any given semester and you need to practice your skills every week to succeed (don't miss class). Random pop quizzes!
LITERALLY THE WORST. Generally disrespectful and is only good if you already know what you're doing. Belittles you if you ask for help and doesn't curve exams. Has the nerve to emphasize recitation and then only offer ONE section of it. Went to a community college for 230 instead, had a blast. I would rather amputate an arm than retake this class
Class seems intimidating during the first few weeks, but Dr. A genuinely cares about his students. So much extra credit that can boost your grade significantly. My biggest piece of advice is to utilize TAs (not SI); they know what type of content will be on exams and will dumb it down for you. If you put in somewhat of an effort, you will be fine.
Dr. A gives you everything you need to be prepared for exams and quizzes. You just have to put the time and effort into all the assignments and practice.
He is a hard professor for sure but he is the only professor to actually teach me chemistry. And for me to understand it. I have always struggled with chem, especially chm 151/152. I am not that smart, so take my word if you watch the videos, learn from the quizzes, and take notes. You'll definitely pass this class :)
If you show him respect and genuine interest in the topic then he will do the same for you. I didn't attend any SI sessions or TA sessions but I went to every recitation class he had and studied for the tests to the best of my ability. He is not an easy professor but he is fair. Put in the work and you will be rewarded.
Wastes a huge chunk of class time yelling at us for how careless we are, how forgetful we are, how reliant on technology or calculators we are, makes you feel small, and even advises us not to take him for the harder courses such as O chem or Biochem. He's really rude and doesn't understand chemistry is hard for a lot of people.
I would avoid this professor whenever possible. The lectures are awful and he yells into his microphone constantly. He is simply not a very nice person, even in office hours, he is not very helpful and is very condescending. If you are not a good exam taker, then it is very very hard to do well in the class.
Professor A can be tough, but put in the work and you'll do well. Attend class, watch videos, use unstuck AI for study prep - it's a lifesaver. The material is challenging, but the professor genuinely wants you to succeed.
Dr. Altamirano is an excellent professor, but you really have to put in the effort for his class. Extensive studying and participation in class is absolutely required. Dr. Altamirano can definitely be scary at times, but the guy knows Chemistry, and I found his teaching method to be extremely effective. Overall, one of the best professors at NAU.
Dr. A is a tough professor. He is hard to reach outside of class, and if you need to miss class for any reason he makes it very difficult to make up work. Still, I think he explains things well and is willing to work with you if you attend SI and his office hours.
I have had him once before for 152. He is generally nice, but when it comes to asking for help, he is rude. He'll give you a confused look, similar to "how could you not know how to do this?" which can be frustrating. The course content is easy to understand as long as you pay attention and don't fall behind. I recommend getting a practice book.
Dr. A is a great professor. I personally took his CHM 230 and CHM 360 courses and loved the way he taught. He prepares you for every exam with lecture videos you can watch over everything he teaches in the course. The material is tough, but if you put in the work you will do great. He provides a lot of resources for you to suceed.
Dr. A is a tough professor; attendance is mandatory and he will call you out for using a phone or forgetting something, but the high pressure worked well for me. It is a tough class, but Dr. A explains the concepts in an understandable way, using lots of analogies. I don't think I would do well in this class with any other teaching style.
The class itself is easy, as long as you pay attention. However, if you hit a roadblock and ask for help, Dr. A will be an absolute jerk to you. Outside of that, I witnessed him publicly humiliate someone by telling them they must have nothing in their brain! What a great guy... But yeah, pay attention and you'll do fine.
Dr. A is a good professor, his use of analogies confused me more than they helped me sometimes but overall his teaching style was helpful. Went to him for help a couple of times and he always explained things to me in a thoughtful manner and ensured I understood completely. Go to class, pay attention and you'll pass! I suck at chemistry and passed!
I took this class spring of 2025. I have never almost started crying or have had an anxiety attack from one single professor before. I was allowed accommodations with disability resources and he told me flat out that I couldn't use them. I would say more but I don't think the rating will let me say everything. If possible, avoid this professor
Dr A has to be one of the worst professors i've ever had. He is serious about what he teaches, have never been yelled at so much by a teacher for not memorizing something he just taught two slides back. This class genuinely raised my blood pressure crazy. I went to SI to get help for what i didn't understand and got yelled at for not understanding
He treats students like we are 10. He will yell at you if you check the time on your phone or get up to go to the bathroom. He is rude when you contact him and yells at the class every lecture. Gets mad when we didn't memorize the previous slide. He made me so upset I didn't want to go to class anymore. Tests are obscenely hard even if you study.
Dr. A was meant to be a teacher and it shows. He cares so deeply about his students and bends his own rules to make sure we all succeed. There is extra credit and a huge curve at the end of the semester. Tests are fair and easier than the homework/quizzes. Attend class EVERYDAY, trust those attendance points are worth a lot. STUDY AND LOCK IN
He is a good professor, he does have intense energy, and he may not work for everyone but I don't think he means to be mean he's just good at chemistry and it's hard for him to remember not everyone else is. I appreciated his teaching style; he uses analogies and simplifies tough topics. You do have to put in the work. If you study, you will pass.
Dr. A was a very intense teacher. He deeply wants students to understand the material and I honestly appreciated how serious he was about wanting us to be present and geniunely learn. Go to SI, DO THE RECITATION WORKSHEETS!!, and do not be afraid to tell him you dont understand, as long as you show you are geniunely trying.
All of the ratings that are just hating on Dr. A forget that Ochem is one of the hardest classes universally, and this man actually has students learning. I met with him once, but its obvious to see that he really cares about his students. Every topic was simplified and easy to understand, especially as I was watching my roommates suffer in 235.
