great math teacher
This math teacher is excellent! Flexible and is a nice person, he takes his time to make sure you understand the material. Not to mention,,,, ladies........ he looks great!
this instructor is HORRIBLE. he does not know how to explain the material.he doesn't know math at all!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!WORST MATH TEACHER EVER!!!!!!
nice guy willing to repeat things if you have trouble
Great professor! There is no reason why everyone shouldn't get an A in this course. Two out of four of the tests were take home and before every test is a review packet. All homework assignments were online & I never once used the textbook because he explained the material so well. I would recommend him to everyone! Also he's not bad looking.
He is awesome! Down to earth, helpful, fair grader. He really seems like he wants everyone in the class to succeed. He is always open to questions and will do things slowly so people understand it. Overall he is a really great professor and a genuinely nice person. Definitely recommend him.
Great Professor! He explains everything so well and he is there for students in need. Great attitude and always very punctual. I like math because of him.
Professor Estrada is amazing. He teaches you what we are going to do then he floods the board with examples. Practice makes perfect and all the examples in class is great practice. He's so kind and he will stop for anybody, numerous times. Very smart, helpful (and cute) professor. He's also funny and who doesn't love that !?!
Great professor, will stop everything to answer your question. Multiple examples of every subject. Any confusion and he's there to help.
He is WAY TOO CONFUSING. It's like he's speaking another language and he teaches so complex! Worst teacher ever!
Professor Estrada is one of the best professors I've had at John Jay. I've never liked math nor was I good at math but Professor Estrada goes above and beyond to help his students with the class material. He is very clear, fair and helpful! Take him if you love or don't love math but he is great!
The best math professor hands down, explains everything to make sure you understand it all
He's a great professor, plus he's CUTE! Helpful, online textbook/homeworks.
SO BORING! not the worst math teacher i've ever had but not the best either. Geez he would put me to sleep. gives alot of homework but the tests are pretty easy- all multiple choice.
This professor is great, as long as you do your hw and go over all the test reviews there's no reason why you shouldn't pass, and if you do not understand the work in class he is always willing to stay and help you further, hands down one of the best professor at john jay, I highly recommend him.
Amazing professor, he is willing to help if you are willing to take it, as long as you do your HW and go over the test reviews you should be able to average an A. He is always available for questions, highly recommended. I love love this professor.
The best math professor i ever had. All of his exams are multiply choice and his review sheets are very helpful as long as you study the review sheets you will do just fine on his exams, but his homework is a must and to be honest his HW is harder then his actual exams. just make sure you do his hw on time and your attendance is a must.
Easy class just pay attention. the test are multiple choice and he gives you the review sheet to study. Homework is a must but overall he cool professor B-
Professor Estrada was a really nice professor, I got an A in his class, and you'll get an A if you attend class and go to tutoring. He explains everything that we need to know for exams, makes funny jokes, and he's handsome. He even made me think of minoring in math. Good thing about him is that he is always on time, answers questions and helps
Doesn't help the individual student. teaches lesson, then that's it. doesn't tell you how you are doing in class. confusing lessons. you have to work, and not really the best professor
The professor is nice, pleasant and not bad on the eyes. As for the way the course went, there was way too much homework and not enough help with it. The topics were rushed over during class and even with tutoring I still got a D. Definitely not a professor to take if math isn't your strong suit. He won't help you just tell you to go to tutoring.
Hard class, but he is very patient but If you are not good in math you will need tutoring for sure.
he rushes through the lessons but he will teach the whole class period. There is SO MUCH homework. Final is very tough even though it is mult choice. Also dont be a pretty girl in the class, because you will be the only one he calls on to answer the questions.
I won't say he is the worst, but certainly not the best. However, I guess he did what he could. Discrete Math is not an easy subject, thus I guess can't really blame him on everything. Nevertheless, he could have teach maybe better by spending more time on topics and by doing reviews before exams!!! His big issue is that, he doesn't do any review
NO REVIEW BEFORE ANY EXAM
Professor Estrada really did make me like Math more, he is patient and is extremely helpful and slows things down for people to comprehend, we get a ton of review questions before each test which was really helpful and he's just a swell guy, (and quite handsome), I'd recommend him to anyone who hates math or wants to pass a course smoothly.
Great professor! He explains the material clearly, reviews for exams, answers all questions and makes sure his students understand the material. A lot of homework, but if you stay on top of it it will improve your grade and over all average. Oh yeah, he's pretty good looking too!
Tough to understand. He did his best to dumb it down for us but as for myself, it was annoying that everything was cumulative. Open bookish for exams but in terms of using blackboard and webassign. Couldn't use notebook but could make your own cheat sheet. He is a great professor so I think it's just that the subject is tough
I hate math but I passed his class with a B- by shear luck. There's homework once a week online and it's usually 12-20 problems. Estrada is a great professor, he's nice and helpful. Don't miss class because it's like missing two lectures- sometimes he speeds up his teaching so ask questions if you're confused. There's 2 mini assignments and 3 tests
Took for a winter course, although the grading criteria is very clear the class moves EXTREMELY fast. There's not really much time to go over something so if you have a question you might as well ask as soon as it comes to you. There is A LOT of homework that is very time consuming. He however, is a good overall professor and I would take again.
One of those prof. that knows exactly what their teaching but is not the best at teaching it. Can be a nice guy when he wants to be. The sarcasm does tend to get a bit annoying and makes the classroom environment uncomfortable. If math is not your strong point, I would not recommend taking his class.
Good professor, can't complain. He's crystal clear at explaining things, just pay close attention. He's sarcastic at times but it's kinda funny. Do the homework, its for your own good. He gives 2 tests and a final (All have 1 take home part,) the multiple choice is in the next class & 2 SPSS assignments. It's pretty confusing, but not impossible.
Awesome Had Professor estrada for Discrete Math and it was sucha pleasure being in his class! The work was fluid! and It was alot of fun! an enjoyable expierence looking forward to taking differential equations with Professor Estrada!
He is by far the most confusing professor I have ever taken. He isn't very clear with his lesson plans and he teaches as though you are already suppose to know the material.
He's super lenient, really chill, and if you speak up, he'll address any of your concerns. He's really there for help when you need it, as long as you tell him. He's passionate about math, which is really fun and makes it interesting. He's also extremely good at simplifying harder concepts. All in all, he's the best math prof. I've ever had!
I am the WORST at math and have always hated it, but he is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. After every example he asks if anyone has any questions which I appreciate because I'd otherwise be too shy to ask. He always shows multiple methods to solving the equation which is very helpful. Also, the homework is heavy, but it helps.
STA250 ONLY: At the beginning of the semester he asks you if you have 7+ hours available for the course outside of class. He is not joking! He gives about 7hrs worth of homework every week. And it's the kind of homework where you feel like you have accomplished nothing useful at the end! I have heard of professors who give less than 2hrs of HW!
He Knows the topic very well but most of the time talks into the board he doesn't teach the concepts very well, overal nice guy, but very dull. I would not take a class with him.
Estrada is approachable & extremely patient. He puts up the exams from semesters ago, w/ solutions, & has review b4 one- also drops the lowest exam %! He doesn't favor the girls, but those who participate. Provides us several methods & makes math easy. E has an easy going personality & is adorable, honestly. Has an amazing ass too, haha. Take him!
He is a good professor but his communication on things is sometimes confusing.I used a tutor for the things that he made unclear which the tutor taught me easier ways of doing it. Math is the only subject I struggle in and I got a B. Lowest test grade gets dropped, homework is annoying and too much at times but he is accessible at all hours !
If you don't understand how he teaches math then I suggest you go to math tutoring. The way he teaches math is sometimes confusing and not explained well. You need to buy the textbook access code and the homework gets annoying with how much there is. Stay on top of your work and you'll hopefully pass. Study sheet is where he gets test questions.
Take him. I dislike math because of its complexity, but I got an A. All b/c of Estrada. Gives review packets, a whole day dedicated for questions before the test, and the lowest test score dropped. He makes it hard to fail unless you simply didn't study. The dudes avid about math, where you cant help but smile with him. Just work for that A.
He was one of my favorite professors! Very caring towards your grade and helps you with whatever you need. For homework, you have to do 5 hours of an online program which every math class has to do.. theres 3 exams and he gives a review for each! EASY A! You just have to make sure that you study the review packets and you will get a high grade
Estrada is the best professor for Discrete Math. I feel that it is impossible to fail his class. He gives you notes and even uses color markers on the board for you to copy. You have to stay on top of everything to get a good grade, justlike any class. 3 exams, drops the lowest and you have the final. Assigned hw but didn't collect.
I struggled and horribly failed my first semester of math 105. Prof. Estrada is an excellent teacher. He gave out helpful notes and things to learn the formulas, I understood the material, I was able to do the homework assignments, and passed every exam well above what I expected to get. I HIGHLY recommend taking him. He's extremely helpful.
very strict
Lectures are very clear and detailed, if you absorb the notes from the lectures you'll score an easy A. You'll take 3 exams and numerous take-home quizzes, all 3 exams are supplied with a review sheet. The questions on the exams come directly from the review sheet, students complaining about this prof. clearly didn't care enough about their grade.
I had to drop Mat 105 my first semester because the professor I previously had wasn't clear on what she wanted. Professor Estrada made things very clear and easy to understand, he works from the minute the class starts until it ends. The only downside was the use of ALEKS which requires 6 hours of time on homework. Got better grades then I expected
Yoooooo. If you can take Estrada TAKE HIM he's really cares about his students. He responds so fast. Do the Hw ! He goes over every assignment before teaching the new chapter He really explains the material TAKE HIM !!!
When he tells you at the beginning of the semester that you need 5 hours/week for math homework, he means it! He gives review sheets for exams (which do help) and extra credit opportunities. One problem, other than ALEKS (online HW), is that his exams are mostly 20-25 questions. Each wrong answer will cost you 5 points if it's a 20 question test.
He is a type of professor that makes math fun and enjoyable. His lectures are very clear. He is helpful and cares about students, but he doesn't accept late homeworks so be careful. Exam questions are harder than the ones he does in the class, but he adds some extra credit questions. I would take his class again.
Some lectures were beyond hilarious (due to a combination of fun students and instructor reactions). Other times, the lectures were slow and confusing--but that's math for you. His class would be great if HW load was reduced. Review sheets are BEYOND helpful. Know everything on that paper, and you can even get a 100. He's both laid back and strict.
He gives HW every week in the chapter he teaches in class. 2 exams 1 final and 3 quizzes. Grading criteria are fine but in my understanding, he does not teach well. Since in discrete math there is lots of logic, he needs to explain things well which he is not good at. Also a tough grader and expect more from the student than he teaches.
He is not the best professor for MAT 204. He can't explain materials well. Yet he is available through phone or email. Tests are super tough, mostly not from the review sheet.
Every class you turn in a homework assignment. Exams were increasingly difficult and the final as well. You definitely need to be paying attention because not all the information on his pdfs on blackboard will help you understand the material. Gives his email to imessage students for instant communication if you have any questions or concerns.
The best Math professor at John Jay. His lectures are really interesting and enjoyable. Just do your work and you will get a decent grade.
The people saying his class is hard clearly didn't try hard. If you read the textbook along with the notes you can get a A . He is clear and readily available outside of class. I got a B+ because I skipped too much so just show up a pay attention
Dont expect to take this class and get an easy A. Proffesor Estrada is great at explaining the material ,but if you dont focus you will not get it. If something is not understood in class he will happily explain all the information to you after class. If you know you will do all the HW and study for the test take him! You wont regret it!
He's a good professor. When he tells you to study 5hrs a week of math, he means it. Theres homework due every week. If you do what you got to do, you'll pass. His review for midterms and finals are VERY helpful as well.
Prof. Estrada is a great professor and makes statistics a little more bearable. It's not an easy A, but if you do your homework and read the slides you will do fine. He's very accessible if you need help outside of class, you can even send him an imessage and he will respond quickly.
You will be able to understand the concepts from his lecture since he uses a lot of examples for each lesson. If you are still confused, you can ask him and he'll help you understand. Doing the hmwk is optional but its best to do it if you want to pass the exams. He goes over any questions that is asked from the hmwk/quiz. A funny guy.
Alvin Estrada is a really cool, caring professor. Homework is actually optional, so the bulk of the grade is made up of weekly quizzes on WebAssign, that are 4-6 questions each. For exams, he provides 15 points worth of extra questions to make it easier. Would definitely take again for a math course.
Professor Estrada is very sweet and caring. He teaches very well you just need to pay attention. At times it can be a lot to take in but as long as you stay focused you will know the material. 3 tests and a final plus review sheets and he reviews in class. Only homework was Aleks (online) due every sunday. If youre going to be absent let him know.
Professor Estrada is a great teacher and caring person. He is calm and make sure everybody understand material. This class is a lot of homework, assigmants and extra credits however there is a purpose.. he want to make sure that even if you did not do well on the tests those extras will boost your grade. Highly reccomended!
Professor Estrada is one of John Jays premier math teachers. His lectures are easy to understand and the work is not overbearing. He is a fair grader and if you do what you have to do then consider it an easy A. Be sure to do hw because the material will always be on the exam.
Professor Estrada is a respectable professor, slows down the material but often makes several mistakes. Exams are fair and he gives review for them online. Do the homework, some packet problems and use the textbook.
Assignments due every week with 1-5 questions. Uses questions from textbook for assignments and exams. Answers to questions are in the back of the textbook. Had 12 assignments, 2 exams and 1 final. Does not drop lowest exam grade. He's pretty chill and provided a extra credit assignment for one exam.
I respect him, he tries to teach most of the material and tries to break things down, if needed. He took days to answer one of my e-mails and did not answer another e-mail of mine at all. I had missed class once where he gave a pop quiz and did not allow me to take it but said he would drop it, and when final grades came... he never did.
Good guy but extremely nitpicky with grading, gives labs, said there'd be 4 pop quizzes but ended up giving 6, not as accessible outside of the class (for me, at least), 50 point short answer sections, syllabus states textbook is mandatory but he doesn't force you to, shows very evident favoritism.
Professor Estrada is an outstanding teacher, a 5/5!
I did not do good in this class as I am possibly the worst math student on this planet, however, Professor Estrada is an excellent professor. He is very lenient and wishes only for success for his students. I really should NOT have passed his class, but I did. He is extremely generous with extra points on exams. Very sweet guy and a good teacher.
Horrible professor, acts like a robot, extremely awkward, doesnt care for students. Avoid this professor at all costs!
Do not take this class! If this professor is the only one available, wait for the next semester and find someone else. This dude is so nit-picky with grades and makes your learning experience miserable. He does not care about your efforts in the class. Only cares about the number you can get on an exam. He embarrasses you if you ask questions
Professor Estrada is a kind and intellectual professor. While his teachings may be indirect and difficult to understand, all you need to do is ask for help and he will guide you through it. Class is based around 3 tests, a final, and four homework assignments. As long you do decent on the tests and good on the homework, he will pass you!
I'm terrible at math and this was a hard class. No online homework. He's a nice guy and he tries his best to teach this difficult material. He's not awful but he isn't the best.
Estrada is Caring, Passionate, Funny & Friendly! This professor will go above and beyond to ensure you understand the course material and are prepared for whats next. Take advantage of his availability outside of class as it will benefit you! Ask questions, Participate, & Study!! He gives good feedback and advice. Be ready to work! He truly cares!
He is a great professor and he cares about his students a lot. However, the course is not easy so you have to pay attention to the readings and lectures.
such an amazing experience to be in professor Estradas class. very helpful and supportive though out the semester.
Prof. Alvin Estrada is a great professor. He is always there to help you, email him anytime and he will reply. He gives review and practice exam for midterm and final. Such a nice guy take him!
I took this course over the summer. He is a great professor who breaks down the information so it's easy to understand. The homework would be on a program named Aleks. Some lessons on Alkes will only require you to answer 4-5 problems but if you get one wrong you would need to start again. We had one group project about math in the real world.
My class was a mix of synchronous and asynchronous. We will meet one day a week where he will go the lesson and we could ask questions about the homework or material. We took 3 exams, about 4 labs, 11 homeworks, lots of videos, and a project. The project consisted on 3 monthly journals and present it along with math problem. You will present twice.
I've been terrible at math my entire life, I even failed a math course in high school. But!! Professor Estrada made me enjoy math for the first time in my life. There was a lot of work but it was manageable. He really cares about his students and he truly wants us to do well. He never made anyone feel bad for asking a math question!
Do not take this class! I repeat do not take this class under any circumstances! HORABLE !!!
Avoid at all costs, class is very difficult and he does not clarify anything. Its like he has a twin, he has 2 diffrent sides. One day he is nice, they other day he is on his period.
Took Estrada for summer class & it was amazing. As long as you follow along with the lecture and do ALEKS as well as all homework and quizzes you will pass. ALEKS has a lot of work however, it will really help in the long run. Weekly journal and presentation for extra-credit. Overall nice and caring. ASK QUESTIONS. He wants students to pass.
Professor Estrada is a really good professor He does hate repeating himself but thats because everything is on BB so pay attention to that He gives extra credit and opens up the tests/exams if you handed them in late or missed them He's very passionate about stats which is good He does get overwhelming but he does manage to explain everything
Prof.Estrada is truly one of the best, as someone who has not taken a math class since their junior year in high school, he helped me understand and feel more than prepared for every test/hw. For the early start program in the summer, he was kind enough to give us some breaks during class. Explains material throughly and is always willing to help!
Easy class if you pay attention and put in the work. Gives you the opportunity to make up work with a 30% exception. You have to read the required reading before entering class. He uses MyOpenMath.
hes nice but I won't take him again because hella homework hes understand tho but hes nice
We all know any Math is a bit difficult, However, If you see Prof. Estrada for STA250 or any other course, take him. His is amazing, he explains the material very well. He uses ALEKS and trust me if you do the homework, and watch the videos you will get an A. IDK my grade as yet but if I fail, it will be my own fault.
Good professor; explains the material in an accessible way. There were 2 exams and a final exam. ALEKS homework and he gave several labs, and out of all of them, he counted 6 papers with the highest grade. The exams were based on the material covered in the lecture. The only downside was that there was no review before the exam, only YouTube videos
I took his class for the summer, and it wasn't as bad as I would've thought. If you already took CSCI 274, this class will be a bit easier for you. The professor is caring and has a good teaching style. I definitely would take his class again! 10/10 would recommend
I needed a B or better in STA 250 in order to stay in the Master's program, and Professor Estrada helped me out severely. He explained everything thoroughly and would not move on unless the whole class understood the material. Would 100% recommend taking one of his classes and will forever be grateful for him!!!!!!!!
