Three major tests, the second is take home. Review sheets/ study guides provided two weeks prior. Four major papers (two primary source analysis and two critical thinking 600-1000 word papers). One 5-minute presentation due at end of semester. Chapter quizzes optional for extra credit on tests. Reading heavy, but Dr Miller is very knowledgeable.
Dr. Miller is a fantastic teacher, with interesting lectures and challenging tests. I love history, but history classes often bore me to tears not this one. My only regret is that I cant take more classes from her next year. Shes quick to reply & very gracious with her flexibility. Get ready to work for your grade, though, as it should be.
Get out now. Quizzes are insanely detailed, with 10-15 specific date chronology questions in addition to the other 25 questions. For a weekly reading quiz. The discussion board require responses to questions that don't illicit a response. Refuses to give 100s on DB posts/papers/response questions but gives no feedback. Just no.
I learned more from this class than any other class I have taken. Very laid back and fun, for a history class. You get the long essay question before the test and can bring notes for it. Fast email responses and met with me several times online and even in person. I wish I could take another history class with her.
Prof went out of way to help me and tutor me so I could do good. Like she was rooting for me to do good. TAKE this prof if u can.
LOVED this class and I usually dont like history. A little overwhelming at first but doc tries to make class interesting as u can and was willing to meet with me anytime to help
I learned so much from her. Class informal and laid back. A lot of work but always had plenty of time for assignments.
Best class Ive taken here. Great class, interesting assignments with plenty of time to do them, no surprises, and she was always willing to meet with me and explain things I struggled with. Youve got to do the work but shes very fair and very helpful. Its no joke but Id take it again in a heartbeat.
I don't have a course code, because I took Dr. Miller last year, but now that her RMP page is finally up for Valencia, I wanted to rate her. She was one of the best professors I've had to date, very helpful and truly invested in her class. She was willing to meet with me after class and even helped me with an extra favor -- truly, a good teacher.
SHE IS AMAZING. She's the most caring, most understanding, lenient professor. She's literally a walking encyclopedia and she knows how to teach and how to give a lesson and she knows how to make you understand the course. I will definitely recommend taking her, she's just awesome.
Awesome class! Tough, high expectations, but fair. She was always willing to meet with me. TAKE this prof! You WILL learn and the class is interesting too!
Best history class Ive ever taken! Scary at first, but I learned so Much!
Recommend! She takes the time to explain things and made sure I understood.
Clear, fair but tough tests. Do the work and ask for help if you need it. She was always there to help. Great lectures. Tries to make it interesting. I worked hard but learn lots. A little scary at first, but so glad I stuck it out. I ended up doing well and learning more than in all my other history classes combined.
Explains things well. Great class. Would definitely take this prof again.
Absolutely no visual aids, power points, not even writing on the board. She jumps back and forth between dates and topics so it's hard to keep up. Lots of busy work that doesn't count towards your grade. No extra Credit. Treats us like we are in high school. Half my class failed the midterm. I learned more from u tube videos.
This class turned me into a good writer. She didnt let me just slide by and Im thankful. (Even though sometimes it was frustrating to learn and be so challenged) I understand whats going on when I watch the news! Good PowerPoints and outlines helped me take good class notes. Two thumbs up.
She is the best! I was in her office most of the morning getting last minute tutoring before the exam. She was always willing to help me and never made me feel bad for needing extra help.
She was one of the best teachers Ive ever had. She truly seemed to care about her students and waa very helpful. She answers emails FAST. Its not an easy class, but it was my favorite class at Valencia.
Just don't take her class it is not worth it and you will basically end up teaching yourself the material. Plus the quizzes are extremely detailed.
This class opened my eyes about so many things. Amazing lectures, clear assignments, very accessible professor. I dont know how she answers emails almost before I send them! The online quizzes are based on each chapter and crazy easy if youve read.
Best lectures. She really cares about her students and wants to help. She tutored me twice a week in her office. I was never good in history but ended up learning a lot and doing well in this class. Take this class with Doc Miller.
Class goes by so fast the lectures are entertaining. She tells great stories about history.
This semester just started and Im really dissapointed by the fact that I believed most of the ratings that this professor has because they do not go along with her teaching... she makes us read about 40 pages and take notes for every chapter and then gives out EXTREMELY DETAILED quizzes! She does not teach the material correctly.
One reason I really like this class and the others I've taken w her and have taken this prof multiple times is because of her lectures. She does not lecture word for word from the book so this is the only class where I actually read my book. She lectured on things that go along with the textbook, but doesn't just read the book to us like were kids.
Im learning so many things I had never even heard about before! I usually hate history, but this class is interesting at least.
Good class. Fair grader. Clear expectations.
DONT, just DONT. This class has caused so much stress and isn't worth the effort. If you thought that you would learn anything by taking this class... you are WRONG. you have to basically teach yourself all of the materials and it is so much which causes you to forget what you learned a week after reading it. I am not happy about this professor!!!
Explains things well. Fast email replies.
Fair and very quick to answer email. Good class. I would take it again.
She is very reasonable and helpful.
I am highly disappointed with this class and wish I would've known my professor wouldn't teach way before I chose her. Most other ratings are deceiving and I am definitely not taking her for AMH 2020
This was a great online class. She was always available, even though its an online class. The class set up was super clear. She will read rough drafts, so even though Im not a good writer, I did well on the papers because she went over my drafts with me.
REGRETS. Should be focusing on classes that actually matter, but I am stressed because of a simple gen ed. class that is about to ruin my GPA. U can read and take the quizzes easily, but if you want to actually understand it and possibly get over a 60 in the test, it is going to take u about 6 hours to just take notes for each Ch. Good luck friend!
I thought this would be an easy course because I am usually really good with history. Instead i found that she doesn't teach well i failed the mid-term because of this. You have to read an entire chapter plus at least 3 other primary sources before each class period. she doesn't take into consideration that you have other classes as well.
Professor made even an online class enjoyable. The class set up was clear and she sends a lot of reminders so its hard to forget things.
I absolutely recommend her as a teacher. She makes you work for your grade, but she makes the path for an crystal clear. Her lectures are great, and she goes in deep into relevant topics. She is very accessible for questions and the tests are loyal to what we see in class. The papers aren't too bad and i enjoyed watching the documentaries
Honestly, don't do it to yourself. Attendance is mandatory, huge research paper throughout the whole semester, Midterm/finals is hard- U have to memorize OVER 76 terms from 5 CHAPTS EACH-includes long essay in the midterm, grading is completely messed up. Take another class cause this is too much European history to cover-Honestly don't do it.
I really enjoy this class. Dr. Miller makes history interesting and doesnt make you feel bad when you dont know something which is good because Ive never been good at history.
Terrible do not take unless you want a lower GPA. She is unrational and I'm pretty sure she writes all these good reviews on here. She is an unrational grader and she does not want you to have a good grades. DO NOT TAKE
I took this class online and EUH 2001 with her in class/online (hybrid). She was always good about getting our tests back to us pretty fast. She makes you work for that grade. BUT she is SUCH a nice prof, and super understanding and gives great feedback and is really willing to help you do well. Also gives amazing lectures in person.
I am a hard-working student and I get good grades, but this has been the hardest class I have ever taken. Readings are a heavy load with the midterm and final being weighted heavily as well. Very straight forward professor when it comes to lectures so don't expect anything fun.
Unorganized. She isn't clear or on task with what she's "teaching." All over the place with her lectures so be ready to teach yourself. Expects too much on tests without teaching the content efficiently. Long essays in all exams as well as short essays. Two books, one has an essay review on. Too much with too little time in a unorganized matter.
Great teacher and very respectful towards her students.
She responds to email very quickly and is nice about it. Im glad Im taking this class.
She responds to email very fast and was available to answer any questions I had when I didnt understand something. History is not my best subject, so that was a lot. But she was always willing to talk me through the chapters until I understood. Id take her again for sure.
She is an amazing professor and that is from an online experience. She gives one paper and will review your rough draft. She is beyond accessible, responds to emails quickly. Will open a discussion group if even one person responds to her. Textbook is required. 6 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 paper, 9 discussion boards over the summer course.
lets just say... I took this class during fall and I still regret it to this day. It was bye normal life; hello studying everyday from dusk till dawn.
This is a hybrid class. I really like that she always explains why a particular assignment is important and how it will help us. Shes really nice and answers emails in minutes. Its not an easy class at least so far, but its reasonable and I am learning a lot.
Do NOT take this professor. She expects you to revolve your whole life around her class only. There is way too many assignments to keep up with. She doesn't believe her students have any other work to do for other classes or in life at all, and her grading technique makes no sense whatsoever. If you ask a question she treats you like you're stupid.
I do not recommend this professor. Not even as a last resort. She treats this class as if it is a writing class and critiques every little thing you do to the max. The way she grades your work is confusing and sets you up for failure. If you try to talk to her about anything or ask for help she refuses to help you and acts like you should know.
I would definitely take this class again. the online review session for the exam was a must. It was super helpful. The exam had essay on it but you get it in advance and could use notes for it. I used the online writing center for paper help and went over my paper with dr M on the phone. Its not easy, but its def also not my hardest class.
I read some of the reviews and thought she sounded OK. I was wrong. Do NOT take this professor. She is not helpful, and the "notes" you can bring for exams is only allowed to be a outline for the long essay question, nothing else. She expects you to use information from the book, without the book. I wish I didn't take her class. Horrible teacher.
Sure, take her class, as long as this is all you have to focus on in life. This professor thinks the world revolves around her class and does nothing to help her students at all. Very unorganized in her assignments and tests. Treats her students like they are dumb and should already know more about the topics. She does not help you learn at all.
My favorite part of this class was the genocide project. It opened my eyes. Definitely kept me up at night with nightmares though. I never realized all that happened. Shes fair and wants you to do well. She has high expectations but will help you meet them. Im glad I took this class.
This professor is amazing! Pay attention to Canvas because she sends out a lot of Announcements to remind her students of things that are due & coming up. Youre required to do 1 paper, many DBs (youll be a moderator for 1), midterm (you can use an outline for your long essay), & a final. She also holds review sessions for the Midterm & Final.
I really didn't like the class but that's because of the content. I thinks the professor is a tough grader the final paper was a pain the butt and that was worth 30% of my grade. There was writing involved with the final and midterm which also was annoying but I get it it's a Gordon rule course. The discussions are 15%and there's one or two a week
Nice person who is willing to accommodate her schedule for you. Not good at giving helpful feedback and doesn't grade based off of the criteria she gives out. You could hit everything she wants but give you a C or B on your paper, it makes no sense. Didn't really teach in class. Only went for the attendance grade. Take if it's your only class.
I learned a lot in a short period of time. (10 week class) I didn't realize I had signed up for a hybrid class. I wasn't sure what to expect, but Dr. Miller was great. Luckily. Available and nice. She does expect you to do the work though. Make sure you know if you're in a hybrid, online, or face to face class. Don't be like me!
Beware Of Gordon rule, one paper is worth 35% of the class, Professor Miller is unethical which is ironic , tons of homework each week, and she is hard to reach, no extra credit
I really liked this class and professor. She usually responded to my messages in minutes, so I learned to stay online for an answer. My favorite part of the class was about Germany. Lots of resources to help learn the material. Two thumbs up from me.
She doesnt really care about her students and she doesnt listen. I tried to talk to her on multiple occasions and she just brushed me off. She also doesnt tell you what she expects from your work until the last minute.
Professor Miller has been really understanding and has worked with me and made the semester better in the middle of all of this Covid.
I loved this class and professor. Most of the lectures really interesting. Pay close attention to instructions and always read the announcements. Sometimes she gives extra credit on there but if you dont check every day you might miss it. I missed the first one.
Absolutely recommend no one to take this course. I emailed her with an issue that I was having with Canvas not giving me an assignment and her actual response was "It shows it is available for you, not sure what to tell you". She doesn't care and she brushes me off when I reach out for help. She grades VERY hard. RUN.
I have never had a professor be so quick to respond to my emails before and offer help. She responds almost as soon as I hit send.
I've enjoyed almost every module in this class so far. I have learned about people I didn't even know existed and events I didn't even know happened. I'm very glad I took this class.
She is the absolute best professor I've ever had. If you just read her announcements, and do the work, you'll get an A.
Great prof. Make sure u do good on the final paper! Its actually due before the midterm! midterm n final are easy multiple choice most of the answers are from the quizzes. You can work ahead! Its a Gordon class so lots of writing. Class structure is great easy to follow and helpful. She is a diamond in the ruff would take again 10/10.
I didn't think I would, but I actually really liked this class and would take it again and recommend it. Read the announcements and she's actually really nice and helpful when you have issues. I actually wish I would have talked to her sooner. I learned a lot and am a better writer after this class.
Read 35 page chapter, take a 32 question quiz, write a 200 word discussion, and respond to 2 classmates with 75 words- every week. Work is not hard at all, but since it is history, it's a lot of info and requires effort. Miller is interactive and provides feedback. Great professor-- definitely reach out if needed.
Ms. Miller loves teaching history. She is a very good and understanding teacher. Probably the best history teacher I've ever had. I'd definitely take her again.
I have taken two classes with Miller and loved them both. This class was on genocide. I learned so much. Grading was clear and workload was very reasonable.
I never knew what apartheid was until I took this class. It was a great class and we even watched Trevor Noahs grandma talk about living under apartheid in South Africa. Definitely recommend.
A joy to be in her class. Really interesting lectures. Very personal and shows she cares for her students.
Shes really good about responding to emails fast and took the time to schedule Zoom meetings with me that fit my crazy work schedule.
I absolutely loved this class. It was easy to understand and she was very flexible with me. The lectures were surprisingly fascinating.
Second class I took with her. She responds to emails really quickly. She must be a fast typer. She was always willing to meet with me on Zoom to go over any questions I had and really worked with me when my dad got Covid. She actually cared about how I did.
I loved this class and this professor. I took it in the summer six week semester and she was better than I could have asked for.
Professor Miller really helped me during what was a truly horrible semester. Her class was my one bright light and she really worked with me to help me succeed. Im very happy I took her class.
I am so happy I took this class and Dr Miller. She was fair and reasonable and responded fast.
I have never been a good writer and she read three of my thesis drafts and two full paper drafts and really helped me improve my writing. I learned so much AND I got a good grade.
This class is about world genocides. It really opened my eyes and I think everyone should take this class.
Really interesting modules and reasonable work load.
Incredible fast emailer. She always was available to answer my questions.
A solid class choice that I am happy I made. The lectures are interesting and she will meet to go over any assignment. I would choose this again.
Professor responded to email fast and set up a Zoom session with me at the last minute when I was nervous about the paper. She brainstorm with me and talked me through my thesis. Very helpful professor.
The subject matter is heavy because it is a class about genocide. But it was a great interesting class. I learned so much and workload was reasonable.
This has been one of my favorite classes in college. She is very helpful and I think she really wants us to do well. I wish I could take all my classes with her.
A pretty straightforward class. Her modules are clear and you always know whats coming.
She responds to emails quickly and was willing to meet with me nights an weekends to work with my schedule.
She is absolutely one of the best professors Ive ever had and she responds to emails almost immediately. I learned a lot that I didnt even realize happened. Definitely take genocide class with her. I am blown away by what Ive learned so far. I thought I knew.
Easy to get ahold of and wants you to do well. Very kind.
I will echo that she is very understanding and cares. Shes not arbitrary I guess I mean.
She answers email fast, which is nice and she even zoomed with me a few times on weekends when I asked for help with my paper.
She actually was sympathetic when I got sick and worked with me. She was nice. She didnt have arbitrary rules.
I took this class in mixed mode. Unlike many of my other classes, this class modules were clearly set up in canvas. This made the class easier for me.
She’s very clear about what she wants and she answers questions fast. I enjoyed this class.
I am glad I took this class with Dr. Miller and would do it again. It was pretty interesting and her expectations were clear and reasonable.
This has to be the worst course I have ever taken. My biggest challenge were her 'open book quizzes', one being a 117 questions to answer in 130 minutes. No time to think about the answers. Worth 40% of total grade. I don't understand how students could be expected to cover so much material so little time.
Unfulfilling research paper worth 35% of your grade, she grades harder than an english prof! No one I talked to had over an 80. The final had 80+ ridiculous questions & written question at 100 min max. Lots of discussions and quizzes (timed). Content was okay. I did well but for the love of history, choose someone else for a better experience.
pretty easy Gordon rule class because you turn in parts at a time so it was work but I knew Id get a good grade and I did. I wrote about Rwanda, something I didnt really know about before. It gave me crazy nightmares but was interesting, if sad. Go to her zooms or schedule your own with her. Worth it to me. Would take agin for sure.
Class was organized in easy to understand way. Work was easy to follow. Professor was nice and responds fast.
Pretty easy to do well if you want to. Every time I had a question she set up a zoom with me really quickly and walked me through it. Very fast email responder.
Amazing professor. She will help you out if needed.
This. professor will listen & help u succeed. This was an online class for me but she went above and beyond & took the approach of understanding& working with me. Without her help I would not have received this A. She helped me with my final& extended it for me because she cares! Take her for an interesting course& for a teacher that believes in you
Professor Miller is caring and respectful. The work load is a little heavy but it is overall simple to get done. Although there is lots reading in this course.
Very easy A class with a lot of homework having tons of reading, quizzes, and discussion post, every week!! Keep a time management schedule and you'll be fine!! (Fun hint her quizzes are available on Quizlet including midterms and finals, except the essays)
Nice teacher and simple classwork expectations. Sometimes she would be insistent that students speak about a certain topic in class, even if it was a very basic concept. Definitely not a deal breaker for me, but this might annoy others.
Dr. Miller's class was mainly reliant on reading "The American Yawp" chapters. Each week you were required to submit a quiz and discussion on the chapters. I will say the class is not that difficult but the discussions are pretty challenging. The best part about this class is that you have a chance to exempt the final exam!
This class has a lot of information to study, and although it was an easy class, there was a lot of information that was unnecessary and she is a tough grader.
She is very easy to work with and reasonable. She says she cares that we learn mostly.
She is available alot and fast to respond to emails and will zoom even nights and weekends. I have never had a teacher be so available every time I needed it.
This Canvas course was the most clear of any of my courses by far. It was clear, everything I needed was in one place and linked, and I was able to work age
I really loved this professor. She would always meet with us anytime she always said and she always did when I asked her. She is patient and real.
The best to do it in the game!
This course was straight forward. Instructions on quizzes were "you have x amount of time for x amount of questions from chapter x. One attempt." You will never know which questions were incorrect. If reading/vocabulary aren't your strongest traits, the material may seem intimidating. Feedback on discussion posts (once a week) are extremely poor.
Nothing followed a coherent timeline when we were learning it it was just all over the place. No assignment has an actual rubric even the final. If you can do your work and just submit anything you will maybe be fine but if you want to actually know what is going on and what you are meant to do then pick a different professor this one is not it
Prepare to read ALOT, but Alyce Miller was informative with her announcements the whole semester and isn't a tough grader. Most of the class is discussions/quizzes and some research workshops. No textbook, she gives you the free text to read. I had no problem communicating with her and she was sweet.
Very tough grader. 2 quizzes/week, exams every 2/3 weeks, indepth discussion posts, and 3 video presentations (7 min minimum) about a song that relates to a specific event in history. Her canvas page is messy, and be familiar with her syllabus, though her syllabus expectations often contradict her assignments. I cried over this course several times
What an amazing professor! there is opportunities for extra credit.there is a paper to write which is 30% of your grade but the professor is super helpful if you have any questions.she has video lectures to watch which the midterm and final is based on. there is a quiz every week on the textbook. take this professor if you can! and she gives coffee
You can read through the super long chapter and take notes for the quizzes, but the questions are so specific, that you'd have to remember the entire chapter word for word to get a 100% on the quiz. She was a nice and accommodating, but grades pretty harsh.
This is a great class and a great professor. She answered emails quickly and would meet or zoom whenever I asked. She made the content fun and interesting. Ask for extra credit for going to history club events. We asked and she gave it to us. I would take this professor and class again and recommend to all.
This class was pretty easy, but she graded discussion boards based on grammar and using mla. Just also make sure you back up and defend your claims, and you won't get a bad grade. She responded to my emails really fast and was very helpful with questions.
This was a great class and she brought us coffee every day and gave mugs too. She answered all my emails very fast. I plan to take her for another history class this fall.
Lots of opportunities to revise the parts of you paper before the final grade. So pretty easy to do well if you want to put in the effort. Pretty easy class as long as you try and do the work. I found the professor to be responsive and nice, seemed to care. I would take her again.
I took this online. There is a lot of reading. About 2-3 assignments weekly. 4 tests worth 40% and final is worth 10%. The class is fairly easy as long as you put in the time to read and study. Tests require Respondus Lockdown.
I have actually enjoyed this class alot, which I did not expect to before the semester. I got my caffeeine for free in class and class is mostly laid back and I have really ended up enjoying my paper topic. I wish I could take Dr. Miller next semester.
Professor Miller's AMH2020 class had a lot of reading, but her Canvas page was well-organized. Assignments included quizzes, discussions, and video presentations. While the workload was heavy, using unstuck ai and reviewing the free textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
This teacher was an extremely harsh grader. I had submitted an assignment and received a 70 on it even though I followed the rubric.
I loved this professor and class. She drops a lot of grades so you can choose how much work to complete and when to miss without it bringing down your grade.
Professor was so helpful for this being an online class! Boosted my motivation.
This was an interesting class. All assignments were due on Wednesdays but pretty easy to complete. Get ready to read - this is definitely an important part of this class. Requires lockdown browser for tests, but most questions were multiple choice which helps.
This professor was fantastic. A lot of material to cover, but she definitely cares to help you achieve the most of the class.
She was my favorite professor and this was my favorite class. She cares about her students. Class and assignments were actually interesting. She even polled the class on topics they wanted to learn about.
I found myself really enjoying the assignments in this class. There was not busywork, She answered my emails really quickly.
She responds to emails quickly and offers extra credit. There's also a project due at the end of the semester, along with a midterm and a cumulative final. I wish I had taken this online because I ended up teaching myself most of the time. Test questions are specific; make sure you know everything in detail. Don't take if you want an easy credit.
She's good, just don't let your assignments stack up. Most of the work is self-explanatory
Good teacher overall. As someone who struggles with history, she wasn't exactly the best teacher I could've taken. There are weekly agendas that always require a chapter to be read from the textbook, and occasionally have an assignment/discussion. Not super heavy workload, but if reading isn't your strong suit I wouldn't take the class.
The assignments aren't too bad, but she is a very tough grader. Each week you need to read a chapter in the online e-book, which is pretty time-consuming and takes around 2 hours. There's lockdown, but no camera or mic required, so it doesn't feel invasive like honorlock. Also, for some assignments she doesn't even count them towards your grade.
