Oh my God what a TERRIBLE class! Her tests are impossible (even with a back and front sheet of notes), she reads off of powerpoint slides, and has the worst grading system for assignments (that she doesn't even grade herself). DON'T TAKE HER CLASS
Avoid at all cost: Ridiculous grading system, has the nerve to ask, "any questions" after speeding through numerous powepoint slides, rushes you out of her office when you have questions, tests are made for PhD's,and always has a scowl on her face. You have been warned!!
Worst prfoessor I have ever had!!! She does have a nice butt though...

first year prof. she knows the material, but is a rookie and doesnt know how to teach yet. maybe next semester she will be better, but take Sandy if you can. She gots a nice keester!
knows her material but doesnt know how to teach it
Worst teacher ever! Avoid this teacher at all costs; tell your friends too! She lectures straight from her power point slides, word-for-word, and the handouts that supplement the power points are even more confusing. Can't get answeres to your questions. Enroll in Gabaldon's class instead.
Worst teacher I've ever had for any class. It's nice that she knows the material but whats the point if she can't explain it. Asking questions is a waste of time she won't be able to answer them. Do NOT take any class with this teacher.
She improved over the semester (switching from powerpoint to handwriting helped), but still has a long way to go. Very inconsistent with her grading policies; and doesn't make it clear what she expects from projects. Instead of explaining things better, she just made the tests/final easier.
This wasn't a difficult class at all. Just make sure you go to every class and pay attention and you'll get an A without even opening the book. Plus, she gives extra credit opportunities. She's very understanding and caring of her students. The subject isn't at all fun, but she a cute and young lady.
I've gone to office hours twice this semester and each time she was not nice at all. She gets testy when you ask her questions. Seems like she knows she is a bad teacher and is trying to defend herself when you ask questions because you don't understand.
very unclear, material can be confusing and the way she teaches confuses you more. tests have a lot of def. and tricky mult. choice but spend most of class time working on calc. problems. wording of homeworks is very tricky and TA is useless- he can't understand it either...avoid if possible.
She is trying really hard to make the class more understandable and gives the students a ton of review before every test. She was really helpful
She is a horrible teacher and the class is extremely boring. The tests are unclear and so is she. I went to office hours and she was so mean and unhelpful. I do not recommend this teacher to anyone.
Not that HARD of a class--probably would have been easier if I ever went. Doesnt take role and class is hard to go to because we do the same thing every day. Examples given in the notes are nothing like the homework or whats on the test. I suggest getting a better micro teacher
She really discouraged me when I asked for help during office hours. If you don't understand her convoluted lectures, you're on your own. Fortunately, I found an excellent private tutor and worked with him consistently to get through this horrible class with a B.
The class was was a hard class, but that was just because it was hard material. overall she is a great teach who is more than willing to go out of her way to help anyone. gave good explanations, and relevant material on tests
i dont know why everyone rags on her. the class pretty is hard but thats because the material is pretty hard. she has good and relevant explanations for the material and she lets you out 30 to 45 minutes early all the time which is bomb because its a 4 unit 2 hour class
first off, I don't know why her rating is so low...she's the tightest teacher I've had in a while...."don't come to class if you get it"....yeah well I get it, so I went maybe 5 times all semester...for a 4 unit class...thats tight...the homework isn't bad...the tests have like 20 point curves and there's no final...take her...fa sho...
Worst teacher on campus... by far. She is discouraging, oblivious, and unenthusiastic. The only people who do well are those who really like econ and do well in it. For everyone else, this class will be absolutely horrible and don't bother asking her for help... she's pathetic.
I will admit that i'm good at qba (which is basically statistics) but the class would have been bomb either way...it just meant I got an easy A without ever going to class....she doesn't require you to go and really doesn't care if you do...she curves her tests a TON and there is no final...hw is easy and it's a joke for a 4 unit class...take her!
She's a great instructor! She provides the power points, so you don't even have to write much at all. It's an EXTREMELY EASY class to follow along with. She has a huge grading curve, so it's easy to get a good grade in her class. Even if you don't know statistics, she gives so many examples, it would be hard not to understand it. She's great!
These people are nuts! Ma is awesome. I have learned so much from her and she has been so helpful. Take notes, ask questions, go to office hours. you dont need the book.
Pretty easy class. Didn't open the book once entire semester so don't buy it. Group quizzes, 7 online hw assignments (guaranteed 100% on them)
She prints out her power point everyday for everyone in the class. She gives a study guide for all exams, and the tests are exactly the same. She has happy to be teaching econ. Liked her so much, I'm taking another class with her this semester. Find a friend in this class and alternate days and powerpoint packets.
Very good professor! Friendly and always willing to answer questions. Explained concepts over to students who didn't understand. Gave group quizzes and tests were fairly easy. She printed out her powerpoint notes everyday for students.
The class is boring and says "questions" after every power point slide. Thats another thing, all note are powerpoints which you monotonously copy(every noob qba teaches like this).. Its not a hard class, but its not easy. There is mandatory attendance and lots of problem sets... Do not buy the textbook and go to class, you will get an A(but hate it
The tests are a mix between multiple choice and written answers (mostly multiple choice), and aren't to hard. She gives out handouts which are easy to study from. The final is based on the entire semester, but my class didn't have to do it because of the firestorms.
I liked Ma, given I enjoy econ. She is a good teacher and I really found the class and especially the homework simple. It was all pretty much self explanatory as long as you attend class. Just do the online work and do ok on tests and you'll be fine in here, I recommend her.
She is extremely willing to help if you are unclear about something. Her accent can be hard to understand at times, and the class is just boring. Only hw outside of class is the web stuff which is really easy. If it interests you and you know what's going on, easy class.
Some will say that she is really hard, but if you do all the practice and ask her questions it isn't hard to get a B and or even a A. You don't really need your textbook at all. It was helpful for me when the tests came around, for extra information. The tests and quizzes are hard, but is on everything that we learned in class.
This class and teacher is easy. EVERYTHING on EVERY test comes straight from lecture. She usually gives handouts to fill in as you go along and makes others available online to print out before class. The online homework is very easy as well and is really all you need to study for exams. Other econ teachers aren't this easy. don't buy the book.
International Economics - Not good - only teaches 60% of the time, the rest of the time students are giving presentations - not helpful
Professor Ma is a decent teacher, and very effective considering the subject is economics. The class itself was ridiculously easy. Don't buy the book. Take this class, highly recommended.
Take this class! Ma is a good teacher; she goes over all of the information in class. There are four group quizzes and only three tests. There is NO FINAL! She makes economics interesting and relevant. HIghly recommend!
GOOD TEACHER. her only downfall is her accent, which can be sometimes hard to follow. she explains things well and uses A TON of visual aids and examples. I missed every friday class of the semester and still scrounged an A. easy homework, mostly lecture in class.
Professor Ma is amazing. The class isn't the easiest but if you go to class, pay attention and put in an effort its a sure A. There is very little homwork. She is the most helpful teacher ever, and is always willing to make time for her students. Truely one teacher that cares about her students. Definately take her.
Very helpful in office hours. Willing to work with you if you ask for help. Tests are not too difficult, but if you miss more than a few, you automatically have a B or lower. Study class notes and pay attention to examples. No book needed.
QBA is bad no matter who you have and this class is hard. The biggest problem I had with this teacher is that she misspeaks a lot and her directions are very unclear. Clearly English Is NOT her primary language.
Absolutely horrible person and even worse teacher. Nuff said.
Ma is a visiting professor at Seattle U right now and I just had to come to USD's page to give my sympathies. She is horrible at teaching microecon. She takes the whole hour and a half of class to explain a couple of the simplest concepts, and she is horrible at doing so. She loves celebrities. She's just bad. Sorry USD.
She was a visiting professor at SU; she seems like she may be a nice person, but often comes off as lacking a personality. The subject (microeconomics) was far too simple, and we didn't go into depth at all. The class was way too easy.
I had Professor Ma for Intro to Microeconomics and it was a farely easily class, having already taken economics senior year in high school. She explains things pretty well and is willing to answer any question if you don't understand something. The tests are pretty straightforward and really similar to the problem sets she gives out for homework.
She is a very good teacher and gives a handout for every lecture, there's really no need to read the textbook and you can still do fine. She explains things in a very clear manner and will answer any question you may have. Tests/quizzes are very similar to the problem sets and practice exams she gives out so stay on the work and you'll be fine
Professor Ma is amazing! She provides handouts at the beginning of each class to prevent you from mindlessly copying from the powerpoint slides, extra office hours before exams, hundreds of practice problems and answer keys, and on top of that, she has an excellent attitude toward teaching and the material. Take her class! :)
Dr. Ma was so helpful. She enjoys teaching econ and is willing to help whenever you need. She uses a lot of examples to help you remember it. The final is optional. She gives a lot of handouts to fill out during class instead of writing your own notes. Take Dr. Ma she was great!
Great Professor! She really wants her students to succeed, and if you do not succeed in her class then there is no one to blame except yourself. She gives every opportunity to do well, and extends her office hours to students in need. Definitely possible to get an A, as long as you pay attention in class, and study before tests. Really Like her!
Awesome teacher. gives handouts of all the notes. is really patient explaining the material. tries to make a dull subject interesting or at least admits that it's not an exciting topic. I highly recommend her
I had her for MicroEcon and she was pretty bad at teaching the subject. I could not personally connect with it, she did try to make it seem as interesting as it could be, but not really approachable, tests were challenging and the student has to put in an excessive amount of work to receive a good grade. Definitely do NOT recommend her.
the things is about ma, if you don't know how she wants things done then you are in trouble. not that clear in her lectures, felt like she was trying to cram 2 semesters worth of material into 1. don't buy the book for this class, she never uses it.
Ma's lectures aren't that difficult, she gives you an outline of the lecture showing all the examples she'll use and things she'll explain and all you have to do is take good notes. Sometimes she has clarity issues. The issue is her case studies and project. Very unclear on what she wants, some people just "got it"
Great professor, would highly recommend. Everything you need to know is spelled out in the handouts. Tries to make an otherwise boring topic relevant to real life
Dr Ma is a great professor. Super helpful and tests aren't overly difficult if you pay attention in class and review her materials before. I recommend-also took for Econ 216, she's awesome.
Easy class, 4 tests and a final, final is optional. 3 quizzes, not too bad. She gives outlines for each lecture and they're pretty helpful, DO NOT NEED THE BOOK. People say her accent is hard to understand but it's really not, she speaks perfect English. To get an A, just study the practice exams and lecture notes she gives out and you'll be fine.
Still don't understand why you can't use AP stats to get credit for this class. Makes everything pretty redundant since its the exact same material. Overall good professor and pretty easy, and all homework is extra credit. Not very good at explaining certain things though
Relatively easy if you've taken stats before. 3 tests and a final, group quizzes, extra credit homework. Alyson is also really helpful and pretty hilarious.
easy class. problems on the tests are the same as in the hw and practice exams. textbook not needed. recommend!
She is an Okay professor. You have to study hard. Daily quizzes (NOT GROUP QUIZZES!!). 3 exams and final, and 2 projects that are time consuming. HW are extra credit, but it won't help a lot.. it's only 1%. Sometimes she's subjective in dealing with students. I would say take her if you can't find better teacher.
Pretty easy class as long as you study for the tests and quizzes. Not much work with the exception of a few problem sets
Ma is one of my favorites. She is an extremely nice lady. Very open to help There is a bit of a language barrier so there is some confusion in the way she words questions. I studied so hard and ended up getting a B so she can be pretty difficult. Just show up to class and take notes. No textbook needed.
My Senior Sem experience was not great. Dr. Ma focused heavily on irrelevant details and micromanaged everyone's projects. Her teaching style was aloof and she managed to take what was supposed to be a class where your economic training culminates into a project you're interested in, in to a public speaking course. I strongly do not recommend Ma.
Ma requires a lot of busy work. Do that and you'll do fine. She grades attendance, but don't count on her explaining anything well; very confusing. She's easy if you just want that good grade, but don't plan on getting a college level quality course from her.
There are four tests, a few quizzes and problem sets and thats it. The tests are easy but the problem sets are pretty tough. She words questions terribly and makes it so that there are two answers that could easily be right. Answer questions in class and participate and she will love you
She's great and makes the class interesting with real-world examples. Her grading criteria is always pretty clear-cut and you know what's going to be on the tests. I think most people got a B, but if you love Economics like I do, an A is pretty easy to get.
Not my fav... Her grading is absurd and you absolutely do not need the text book. She is no doubt a nice person, I like HER, just not her teaching style. I left the class feeling like her course was graded objectively and that kinda sucks.
Very ineffective teaching style with incredibly arbitrary grades. The only reason I've taken her twice is because she was the only person teaching the required courses I needed. It is a shame that the economics department hires mediocre teachers such as Ma.
She makes it harder tham what its supposed to be . Ineffective teaching style. She should just do research and never set foot in a classroom.
It seems like most people get Bs. It's not a bad class, but you definitely need to put in a lot of extra effort to get an A. Or you have to know economics very well. She will help you out a lot if you ask for it.
Great professor, who truly cares about her students and their success. Always available for extra help. Also makes her lectures interesting, and has many opportunities to raise your grade. Take her!
Great professor, offers great amount of help when needed. Take her!
She was an amazing professor! I enjoyed her lectures, they were very informative and interesting! She cares about her students and makes herself very available for help and offers lots of extra credit! Most definitely take her!
Professor Ma was my favorite professor of the semester. She gives handout notes and lectures weren't bad. She prepared us well for tests so tests weren't difficult. Very little homework yet we still learned the material. She answers questions and cares for her students. Great professor.
I wanted to write a review because I'm surprised at how bad her rating is. Professor Ma really cares about her students. As long as you pay attention in class and take notes, you will be okay. Her tests are hard but if you study you will be okay. Her office hours really help. She is very sweet and always smiling.
I definitely like Professor Ma as a person and she is very kind and cares about students but I just do not prefer her teaching style. The tests are difficult and she rushes through lectures and doesn't explain things thoroughly. She gives options for extra credit which is nice, but I would not take her again. Disappointed :/
Good teacher, very nice person, always smiling, and very passionate about statistics. Nothing against her, but statistics is a hard class. Miss one class and you'll be lost. She does a great job, my one complaint is that she won't ever confirm your answer when asked because she "wants you to do the work", she'll confirm your "work process" though.
Her class is a little bit hard. If you want to get a good score in this class you have to be fantastic and hard-working, I believe the average in this class is C+. Her office time didn't provide good feedback and I was a little disappointed.
Knows material like back of her hand but has no idea how to explain to students. Not reasonable at all with grading and makes the class extremely hard for no reason. Confidently believe she gets enjoyment out of her class avg being C+ and straight up tells kids to drop the class if you score under a 70% on first midterm. Highly advise do not take!
I am not sure why Professor Ma has a lower rating on here. She is one of the most caring professors I have had at the University of San Diego. She wants her students to truly learn and understand what she is teaching. Ma is also very accessible with her office hours and email. Always willing to help outside of class.
Professor Ma is very caring and helpful. The material can be difficult, but she offers lots of help and as long as you put in the effort you will be fine. Homework assignment every week, but they're not hard. Exams questions are directly off of the homework or on what we talked about in class. She doesn't trick you. Take this class!
I love Dr. Ma. She is one of the kindest professors I have had at USD. Her class is a bit challenging, but she helps you succeed which shows she really cares about her students. The tests are difficult but if you go to office hours she really helps. I recommend Dr. Ma, she saved me from failing because she has other random assignments to help
Very connected, knowledgeable, and involved with her students and made class very enjoyable and personal. She explained concepts very well and what was being tested on. The class has some challenging concepts that you are expected to study on your own, however, Professor Ma is very helpful and open if help is ever needed. Take her class if you can.
Professor Ma was amazing and is very educated. She makes sure her students understand what she is teaching and is always available for extra help if needed. If you are dedicated to putting time in for studying for tests and projects you will be more than enough okay! This class really taught me about real-world economical terms and I recommend Ma!
For econometrics, there's some work to be put in every week but she is super clear about what is going to be on the test; she is also available for extra help (she actually turned our Friday class into optional office hours which was huge). Never bought the textbook and did well, don't need it at all.
I read the textbook, watched the lectures, and understood all of the concepts for the midterm, and I got a 60 out of 100. Nothing on the midterm is related to what I reviewed and nothing of it is similar to the homework. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I don't even know what to do with the F. Honestly, she had destroyed my college life.
same feeling as the comment below. If you attend her class, you need to be ready for a bunch of "lecture videos" which are basically (I'll say mostly) slide-reading. And her slides are not into details which are tested in the test. Just remember all the details in the textbook instead. Her lecture videos are instead not that important.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. A good slide reader who gave us unrelated midterm questions. I attended every course, finished every assignment, and I reviewed well. (I even took AP Macro and Micro so it was my second time to study Macro.) Then I only got grade which was a little bit higher than our average grade which was 67 out 100. RUN AWAY!!
Dr Ma has been my favorite prof at USD so far. She really cares about each of her students and if you put in the work in her class, she will do what she can to help you succeed. She emails back within an hour most times, if not ten mins. She is very educated on the topics she teaches, but the class definitely requires studying outside of class.
Dr Ma is one of my favorite professors at USD. She is very clear on what classwork is excepted and will reach out to you to make sure your up to date on all your assignments. Her in class handouts are very helpful and her practice tests are very helpful to review before the exam.
All her lecture videos are basically slide- reading. Slides include key points which are too concise- hard to understand without going over the textbook. In other words- prepare to self- study a lot! Grade is 100% test based. It is my second time to study macro. I got the highest grade in my high school (a+), but it turns to a b in her class.
Do not take this professor. I don't know the meaning of her lectures and slides, cuz almost 70% of them are not related to the exam questions. The textbook is totally not related, and I lost the access to viewing it before final exam. About half or more of the final questions are never taught or explained. The average grade is 120/200, which is 60.
A good and kind professor who answer students question timely and clearly! She is very concerned about students!
Gives handouts for notes at each lecture, making it very easy to learn the content. Don't really need to touch the textbook at all. Tests can be a bit difficult, but a few hours of studying max should get you an A. Group quizzes and homework are basically free points.
She would take points off that my classmates and I thought were not sometimes deserved. Otherwise very sweet prof. She seems like she would be the time to really help you understand the material if u were struggling. Slide read a lot
For Econ 3 at UCSD. Everything you need is in the lectures which is pretty nice. Its honestly a really good fit if you're better at absorbing material outside of a classroom. I would honestly recommend even though I wouldn't label her as a top tier prof she is the next best thing 4/5.
BAD PROFESSOR. AVOID HER. DOESN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING ONLY READ THE LECTURE SLIDES
Professor Ma doesn't do HW in this course so your final grade is basically dependent on how you do during your midterms and your final exam. :/ She reads from her slides a lot which can make lectures feel boring and long. She bounces between explaining different concepts and doing example problems too much which can get really confusing.
I love Dr. Ma because of how caring she is, but her ECON 101 course was very challenging for me. Her lectures, although long, were informative and relatable because she uses a lot of real-world examples. Her exams were mainly multiple-choice, which was difficult for me. She may seem scary at first, but she is super kind and funny.
Decent professor overall. Her lectures can become very boring very quickly, but they are recorded online so in-person participation is purposeless. Exams are fair. There are a few questions that don't have much to do with the syllabus, nothing much you can do about it. Study and you'll be fine. Her grade boundaries were crazy low during our course.
Professor Ma sometimes explains concepts well but tends to move on quickly since she reads off the slides half of the time. There's no homework, so you have to study to get a good grade on both midterms and finals. It was difficult to get a good grade due to having no homework and you had to rely on slides or recorded lecture videos.
I had her for my Microeconomics LLC class and she was amazing. Not only was she kind, but she explained the material extremely well. Very clear, structured lectures. She really wants her students to succeed. Would 100% take her again.
I was pleasantly surprised with Dr. Ma's first year econ class. Her lectures are clear, concise, and to the point. Homework assignments were due about once every two to three weeks, and they were easy to complete in a group. Practice problems are posted online as a study guide to every test. She also gives everyone a practice test before big exams.
Dr. Ma is a great professor. She gives clear and detailed lectures and is a caring professor. To be prepared for her class, you should know that attendance is vital, there are lots of group assignments, she gives an outline and a practice test for every exam, quizzes are group quizzes, and there is a set of practice problems due every other week.
Dr. Ma is amazing. She is very engaging and class is fun. She prints out everythign you need for the class. There is homework online and tests are pretty similar to everything she teaches.
Your grade is comprised of 3 tests, so it is a bit stressful. She does a fantastic job of explaining real world scenarios for economic principles.
By far one of the best professors i've had at USD so far. Super organized and has everything you need online including notes, lecture slides, and lecture videos. Very helpful when you come in for outside help. Overall just a very lovely and caring person, I definitely recommend taking her class if you have the chance.
The professor is very kind. She's a little on the quiet side. Her slides reflect the exams. The wording on the exams is a little difficult. Grades are only midterms and the final. Do the practice questions.
I honesty enjoyed her lectures. She's caring, funny, and always willing to help, and she describes complicated concepts in a concise manner; she uses videos and analogies to introduce and clarify topics, which I appreciated and enjoyed. If I remember correctly, tests are not cumulative. There's no homework, but the textbook provided problems.
She moved really fast through lessons, she would completely lose us mid way through her lesson. Lot's of note taking and extremely long homework assignments (sometimes taking up to 3 hour). Not very helpful during office hours. Don't take her.
Great Professor, Cares about her students!
She's honestly a great person, just disorganized. When she does examples she doesn't do that great of a job explaining questions or problems, or she has the wrong answer and has to update it in class. Actually reading the textbook was my greatest friend - she basically teaches to it but includes a little bit less.
She was a good professor. Super kind and cares about her students. She gave us guided notes so it was pretty easy to follow her lectures.
Entire grade was made up of exams but they were all multiple choice with averages in the high 80s. Professor Ma lectured fairly quickly so I had to do a lot of reviewing on my own but provided practice problems that were helpful for the exams. Overall class wasn't too difficult and Professor Ma was very caring.
