If you have to take COMP 283/MATH 381, take COMP 283 with Alyssa Byrnes. She's young, new, and nervous, and sometimes confuses herself when explaining concepts, but she's so sweet and patient (and very intelligent when it comes down to it). It's definitely not an easy class, but hers is the best option for the credit/material.
If you have to take COMP 283 take it with Alyssa. She is far better than the other options and her class is pretty easy. Just do the work and pay attention in class and you should be good. A lot of work is participation based so just turn it in. Exams are same difficulty as homework too if not easier.
I absolutely loved Alyssa. She was super sweet and caring. The textbook wasnt required and I dont regret not reading it. Discrete math is obviously a hard subject and you have to put in the work. Alyssa was very fair with grading, gave points back, and wanted everyone to pass the class. Def the best instructor you could take this class with!
COMP283 is a really tough class but Alyssa did her best in teaching it. She's super nice and wants you to succeed. The textbook isnt mandatory but can help if you get lost with some concepts. Office hours with the TA's will help, and it will be helpfull if you really try to understand the concepts and how to apply them
Comp110 was such a fun class. Dr. Byrnes was always on top of answering questions/concerns on CampusWire when students asked, and was very flexible with grading based on whether or not everyone understood the content. Gave clear lectures, office hours were super accessible and helpful, cared a lot about her students!
Alyssa was a great lecturer, but comp 110 is very focused on the individual. You do all assignments on your own and see TAs for help in office hours, and videos of lectures are accessible online. Can guarantee your grade with the autograder. Quizzes are just like the quiz reviews. Easy A for someone with 0 coding experience.
This class was one of my favorites for my biology major. 99% individual learning, unlimited submissions on exercises, and quiz reviews mirrored the exam structure.
This was my first coding class and I absolutely loved it. Professor Byrnes is amazing and the most precious human. You can tell she is passionate about teaching and genuinely wants students to enjoy the class while also learning. I would 100% take her class again. Assignments were time consuming but not bad if you use office hrs!
Good professor, don't learn much in in person lectures but her online videos are very clutch.
Professor Byrnes was amazing, this was my first coding class and she made it very accessible. There's lots of TAs and office hour help consistently. The exercises are long but there are unlimited submissions so you have opportunities to do well. The quizzes are not super difficult as long as you do the practice problems and watch the videos.
She's super nice and wants you to do well. Everythings easy to find and has clear grading criteria. If you turn in work early, you get bonus points. If the overall grade for something is low, she gives extra points to bump it up. I really enjoyed having her, too bad im not good at comp lol.
She's nice and & flexible with the grading rubric as far as giving extra points for turning it in early etc. as everyone else said, but tbh this is not a beginner-friendly class for coding, despite being advertised as that. So if you're not required to take this class, then don't; exercises take a long time and overall the stress isn't worth it.
Comp 110 is an okay class, but there are many major issues with it that make it unpleasant to take. For one, exercises often have nothing to do with what is on exams. The final exam also tested around 10% of all the course material, and was not at all representative of the semester of learning. Overall, a frustrating class-dont take unless required
I never coded before this class (except a bit over break because I was scared of this class) however, it ended up being VERY manageable. If you're not a fan of exams, this is a forgiving setup where the final ends up being only 10% of the grade. The attention to detail on accessibility and resources is also shocking to see in a stem class.
I had no coding experience before this course. I loved everything about this course and professor. Exercises and exams (except the final, which was more tricky) were clear and fair, resources were constantly available, and the structure of the course was great. I really learned so much and I am already set to take another class with her.
Good professor, as someone with 0 computer science history she made it easy and accessible to do good. Would highly recommend.
At the beginning of the course, she tells us that you don't need any experience with coding to be successful in this class. However, I pity anyone who actually knows nothing about computers or coding because very little teaching is done. Per week, I have spent roughly 10 hours outside of class working on the coding exercises. Thank you Chat GPT.
Alyssa overall was good for Comp 110. I had no coding experience and the course moved slow enough to where I felt it was an easy A. As long as you did the work you would do fine and the tests were on the easier side. I feel I'm rating the course more than the professor because Comp110 will be the same no matter who you have.
It was slightly annoying how she would do the easiest examples in class and then the tests would be something completely different or way harder and she was just overall unhelpful and didn't really do much.
i was so scared to take this and felt that there wasn't enough of a transition into learning concepts but it does get sm easier toward the end. worst part was office hours weekly, but it helps. quizzes are ok, final not so much. go to lecture and you'll be ok tbh, alyssa is v sweet, CHECK CAMPUSWIRE IF NOTHING ELSE PLS (extra cred/extensions)
I heard COMP 110 was supposed to be easy but it wasn't what I expected. I think that's also because it's her first time teaching the course. However, the quizzes and final were a little difficult, and you do need to get a good amount of studying if you don't attend the lectures.
I had no coding experience and was worried for this class, but it was so great! The class is extremely structured, and if you put in the work, it's easy to do well. Go to office hours, check CampusWire, and put in the time. Exams are not designed to trick, grading criteria is clear, and Dr. Byrnes really cares about her students!
I didn't find her lectures that helpful but her online videos were great and gave you what you needed for the most part to succeed on assignments. Attendance isn't mandatory and everything is recorded.
Alyssa Byrnes was great and very accessible if you had any questions. Comp110/her class is very structured and you get a lot of extra credit opportunities. Definitely use TA office hours to your advantage (esp if stuck on an assignment)! Quizzes were pretty easy if you did the practice available before quiz day. Overall 110 is an easy effort A.
Had an amazing experience with Alyssa in COMP110! She was always so understanding and was quick to help with any issues I had throughout the course. I have had literally zero programming experience prior to this course, and I did amazing thanks to her and the TAs help!
I had a great time in COMP110 with Alyssa. If you have no coding experience, don't worry, she's great! Also asynchronous Thursdays are the best. Class was easy and clear expectations were laid out with honestly very little work during the week, I always worked way ahead and you actually get extra credit for that too! Can't recommend this more.
Alyssa is AMAZING! I was scared to take compsci, never having experience with it, and it seeming too hard to understand as I like to know the reasoning of doing things and understanding how the computer understands code but she prioritizes teaches this and much more, making everything so clear! I might even want to be a CS major because of her.
Alyssa is so understanding and was quick to help with any issues I had throughout the course. I have had literally zero programming experience and kinda despised CS before her, but I love it now. If you spend time on the work and actually pay attention, you will have no problem, no matter your experience level! Her course is structured to support u
Did not explain content well at all and have very inaccesible TA and office hours. Also does not know how to explain content and blasts through content without explain concepts clearly.
She is very approachable and very nice. If you think comp110 is very easy you can simply don't show up in class and she public every detail you need on a website. She responses lots of question online and she is very caring. The only down side of her class is probably the fact that it's so popular that the registration is difficult.
Amazing prof. I came in with a small background in CS which could have made the class easier for me (some of my friends are struggling in the class), but I felt Alyssa did a great job explaining the concepts in her lectures and she is very fair with her grading. Allows you to resubmit basically until you get a 100 on your HW. Easy quizzes also.
Can be somewhat rude and unapproachable at times, but no need to approach her or the TAs much because COMP110 is one of the easiest courses at UNC. Zero excuse to not get an A
She is a good professor, but I have never touched coding before in my life, and I was lost. The exercises are a huge jump away from the material we learn in class, but achievable and understandable. Expect to be in office hours a LOT! (recommend 7-11 hours to dedicate a week to this course). Her tests are fair and she is super sweet
Anyone saying she is easy to access outside of class is incredibly wrong. She does not respond to emails, must message through edstem. Half the responses to questions on edstem are rude. Office hours are basically impossible. Lectures are VERY different from assignments. Tests are full of trick questions. I wish I had this course with someone else.
Alyssa was a great professor. I will say that what we learn in class is different from assignments and exams. However, her exams are very fair, and each exam (this semester there were 4) was only 10%. The class is effort-based, so as long as you try, you'll do just fine. I think she is also very nice, and overall a class I recommend.
As someone with no prior experience coding, I found this class slightly difficult. Exercises were not similar to the lecture material, and can often be time consuming. Exams were easy as long as you pay attention to lecture. Everything is accessible online, even the lectures (no attendance). I never went to office hours but got an A lol. good luck.
She has very helpful lectures and a lot of TA time slots. This was my first time taking a coding course and it was pretty easy.
I thought this class was okay, exercises were very time consuming and more difficult than class. Make sure you understand memory diagrams.
I thought this class was fine, but the professor was extremely difficult to reach out of class. You have to message her on EdStem and then she wants to setup a Zoom meeting when the question can be answered through email. She also has a snarky attitude so be prepared to be humiliated at times.
I will say, I love the teacher. Very sweet and all the TA's and her are accessible via edstem. However, I dont know why everyone thinks this class is so easy. If you have no comp experience, I personally found that the class takes A. LOT. of time. u dont have to study much for quizzes, bc the exercises prepare u but its def a time consuming class
Alyssa is super sweet and a great prof! I had no prior programming experience, but she put things into terms that were easy to understand. While 110 can be pretty time-consuming (especially for those new to programming), it's not necessarily a difficult class. If you're willing to put in sufficient time and effort, your grade will reflect it.
I didn't have programming experience and found the class manageable. It was not easy, but she's very good at explaining things and does her best to prepare you for quizzes. There's no trick questions on quizzes so you always know what to expect. You can only reach her through EdStem and she's a bit sassy sometimes, but I still enjoyed her course!
Her lectures are pretty good at teaching the material and she is really sweet. The course content is not very difficult but the exercises/hw can take up a lot of time.
I would recommend this class with Alyssa to anyone. She is great at explaining the material, but there can be a lot of work at times. If you do the homework and the practice during lectures, the quizzes are very easy.
i had NO programming experience before this class. honestly one of the easiest classes ever. make sure you understand the core logic of this class and exams are a piece of cake. i mean the average for the final was literally an A!!! prof byrnes is so nice and attendance isn't even required. such a great class i totally recommend!
With no programming experience I really enjoyed her class! She seemed really passionate. I had to spend some time on the exercises, but I really enjoyed doing it. I would happily take a class with her again.
Alyssa was a wonderful professor: caring and helpful with any questions we had. She did fine explaining most concepts, but I still recommend doing some self study if you don't have prior experience. My only gripe was memories diagrams which don't pertain to actual programming. Overall, the class is very forgiving and it's quite easy to do well in.
I knew nothing about computer science going into this class, but it's very easy to learn with the assignments. I would suggest going to class and starting the assignments early so you have time to go to office hours. The quizzes are very similar to what you learn in class. Overall not a class meant to trick you.
Would take again good professor.
This was a great class. Alyssa is so kind and accommodating to your needs. Definitely need to pay attention at the beginning of this course to be able to succeed. It is difficult to understand if you have no coding experience but she simplifies things. Make sure you go to class!
Alyssa is such a sweet professor! I had no absolutely no coding experience prior to taking this class and I did fine. Definitely go to office hours if you need help on exercises and attend review sessions before the quizzes/final!
Met in person on Tuesdays and async on Thursdays. At the beginning of the semester Byrnes made sure to tell everyone that this class can be a 15 hour/week commitment which is definitely overkill. If you pay attention in lectures and do the homework at the beginning of the week you can get everything done and get office hour help if needed.
Alyssa really did her best with such huge classes and was really accommodating with campus/life events. I didn't get the feeling she was particularly caring one-to-one though, and she and the TAs didn't pay much attention to issues with the live-streamed lecture. Practice super hard with memory diagrams and function writing, and you got the tests!
Alyssa is a sweetheart. While she was a decent teacher, I feel like this class was easier for people with coding experience(I didn't have any prior coding experience). Figure out how to do memory diagrams early on. The exercises don't coincide with her lessons. Focus on what you learn in class; that's what will be on the quizzes.
Alyssa was a good professor overall, I personally really liked her and I think COMP110 with her was a good intro for me (I had no prior coding experience). I will say I wish we were able to get access to reviews earlier on. I feel like we got access to quiz reviews last minute, but other than that I had a great experience.
Loved her COMP110 class! She is an awesome professor and is super understanding that some people may not understand the material at all to begin with, so she has many opportunities for extra credit and extra help outside of class to help people. The quizzes and final were not difficult, very similar to the practice questions! Take this class!
She made this class feel like a breeze and was so caring and made it easy for students to ask lots of questions. The tests and final weren't that bad but the exercises could be difficult. Love that she recorded her lectures so that we could watch them if we couldn't make it to class!
I didn't have any coding experience coming in and this class was great. I learned a lot and Alyssa made Python feel easy. The quizzes weren't bad as long as you did the practice problems and exercises, but the exercises were a little confusing sometimes. However, the TAs were pretty helpful and there are tons of resources to help you.
Alyssa was a solid professor for COMP 110. Nice grade drops and the quizzes/final weren't bad if you understood the review material and lecture slides. HW exercises were much more difficult then lecture/quizzes and I often required assistance on those. Coming from someone with little/no coding experience. Nice that she posted all class lectures.
Solid professor. Mainly graded on exercises and quizzes. The office hours and help sessions are easy to access. Exercises often take a while, so get started ahead of time. Memory diagrams are also a heavy concept. Practice problems are available.
Amazing teacher! Genuinely wants everyone to succeed. All materials are easily accessible, including recorded lectures. TA office hours are very helpful and offered at a wide range of times. I had previous CS experience so I didn't find the material very challenging, but new coders also didn't seem to struggle too much.
As someone with no coding experience, the class was challenging. Lectures only introduced you to the exercises (homework) and then a lot of it was on your own IF you did not use all the resources. Tutoring is helpful so utilize it. The difficulty of the exercises set you up well for the final exam. She is considerate of her grade weightage.
Professor Byrnes was very kind and warm in the lecture. I never had a day where I dragged my feet getting to her class. I believe that with a small amount of programming experience, the class will be fairly straightforward but I know a lot of people without any experience getting overwhelmed. If this is you, go to office hours whenever you can.
Alyssas was generally a very nice person and cared about the success of all her students. I will say that the class is pretty hard for beginners with no experience as the class makes you spend a lot of time alone learning by yourself. Nevertheless, she was amazing and gave us many extensions and the grading policy was very fair.
Class was well designed through the site. Difficult if you have zero coding experience but that's expected in this course. Office hours will be your messiah with the coding assignments. You can essentially spend 3ish hours there and be done with the coding assignment for the week (this was me with 0 coding experience). Wonderful and caring prof.
If you have experience in Python, this class will be a breeze. Attendance is not required, and all the content is posted online, so missing lectures is not a big deal. For new coders, it's a great class if you are genuinely interested in learning the basics of coding, and Alyssa is a great professor for it. The class does have quite a bit of work.
Took this for PSYC degree requirement. Don't take in full semester. Assignments take a long time and are tedious. Professor is very good at explaining new concepts, but doesn't take the time to elaborate on harder concepts that are necessary for assignments. Overall, good experience for not coding before and not liking it very much.
I loved this class! Lots of assignments but they weren't hard and you get extra credit for turning them in early. Easy to do well if you put in some work. I've heard that the other 110 profs are a lot harder, so take it with her if you can!
I really love Alyssa as a professor. Genuinely I don't think she even knows my name but she is so sweet and cute and bubbly and helpful. My main advice is to make comp 110 your hardest class if you have never taken a cs course before (don't take with calc 2). Please go to office hours and do not slack on exercises and you will be great :)
As an experienced coder, 110 was easy with 1-2 hrs of work per week. Attendance wasn't required (except for 5 quizzes which were easy if you did the practice problems), and the weekly assignments were easy. But, if you don't know how to code, this course will def be challenging (maybe 4-5 hrs/wk), but manageable. This sem's avg was an A-.
This class has so many opportunities to do well in the class. There is extra credit you can recieve from turning in your exercises early so, DO IT. Even if you do mediocre on the quizzes and final, you can walk away from the class with an A. However, I will say that the exercises can be frustrating but is very helpful with understanding the class.
Great and funny! Love her and made comp 110 easy and fun.
As someone with no coding experience, did not think class was structured well. Lectures got very confusing and hard to follow. Lectures recorded, but notes posted after class are incoherent and hard to understand. Wish things were spelled out more clearly in class. Office hours very helpful for exercises and they are worth a lot so definitely go.
COMP110 was the most well-structured class I've taken at UNC. I took this course for SS1 with 0 prior coding experience and came into it intimidated. Although the material was difficult, Alyssa and the TAs were extremely kind and helpful. I found all homework to have a purpose, and I'd 100% recommend doing the study guides for every quiz.
Amazing Professor. Had genuine fun with the assignments given and could tell there was a clear passion for teaching. Would 100% take again.
Not bad but not great. She's super nice but format of the class could be improved. A great deal of the grade on quizzes and tests comes from an understanding of memory diagrams, a conceptual idea, rather than actual coding and programming skills. As someone who'd never taken a coding class before, not hard to get a good grade but must put in work.
This class is structured greatly and the TA's are all super knowledgeable. Office hours/tutoring are amazing resources and lectures are recorded. Alyssa is a great professor and explains everything clearly. The exercises are challenging, but quizzes are very straightforward. Practice questions are posted for every unit and are extremely helpful!
I came into this class with no prior coding experience, and I have really enjoyed it. Alyssa moves through her powerpoint quickly, but she explains concepts well. If you understand the practice problems for quizzes, they aren't difficult. Coding exercises have clear instructions especially at first. Lectures are posted so attendance isn't required!
If you have prior experience with coding (e.g. online courses or AP in HS), her COMP 110 will be a breeze for you. Her multiple-choice questions on quizzes are often just reused questions from homework. On the other hand, people with no coding experience will have to conquer a major learning curve, but that's natural with programming in general.
Dr. Byrnes is an amazing professor!! I had zero previous coding experience and have done well! She is a great lecturer and is very funny! Multiple short quizzes throughout the semester help to balance the weight of the final. The majority of your grade comes from coding assignments, which are both fun and not too difficult. Highly recommend!!
I had a bad Python experience before and was terrified for 110, but Alyssa made it so easy to understand. Lectures were really good and paced evenly. She is really good at explaining things. I appreciated all the opportunities to practice what we learned. Very unfortunate that Kris took over, but I hope she is doing well
Super sweet and a great prof! She explained things in a very comprehensible way and the quizzes never had any surprises and were generally pretty easy and simple.
Incredible professor, my first time taking any sort of comp sci class and I love it now. Explains things very well and has a very clear and forgiving grading system. Very easy A if you show up to class and do the assignments on time, don't be scared by the "12-15 hrs/wk" they talk about I studied a couple hours for each quiz and ended with a 97.
If you don't want to be disappointed by other professors for the next however many more years your in college, don't take Alyssa. All my years of school, I have never had a better teacher. Shes incredible and so sweet. Absolute let down when Kris took over even though he is regarded as one of the "best". He sucked. I hope she is well! Alyssa >>>
Had her for half a semester until Dr. Jordan took over. She was amazing, and her lectures were very clear and easy to follow. I didn't have much coding experience and felt that she explained all the concepts in thorough, yet concise ways that made sense to me.
Had Dr. Byrnes before she left on maternity leave and was super sad to see her go! She is excellent at teaching to those with no experience and scaffolding material in a way that makes sense. I had 0 experience coming into 110 and I thoroughly enjoyed the class. The final is only 10% of your grade, very nice to have a low stakes final!
Most accommodating and clear professor I've EVER taken a class with here. Alyssa really wants to see her students succeed and explains the material in way that makes sense w 0 coding background. I'd recommend taking her a million times over. If you pay attention, you'll do well in this class, and there's lots of extra help (office hours, tutoring)
Dr. Lytle is great if you need COMP 110 but aren't a computer science-oriented student, like me. She explained challenging concepts really well, and was flexible regarding late penalties. The assignments are annoying, but prepare you for the quizzes and final, which are easy.
I had Alyssa for around half the semester before she went on leave. She was such a fun, thoughtful professor. She explained everything so well and always reassured her students. Loved this class.
I have 0 coding experience but love math & problem-solving. Easy and fun class with knowledgeable TAs, office hours, and forums for virtual tech support. Start the EXs early because they can be tricky. Don't be afraid of this class, the comp110 team makes it fun and approachable!
I am rating the class as a whole not Professor Byrnes. I always found it difficult to get help outside of class because of how many people were at tutoring sessions and office hours. Also, my emails usually took more than 2 days to get a response. Professor Byrnes was a kind person, but the COMP 110 team as a whole did not do a great job.
Alyssa was very caring and made Python less daunting for everyone. The one time she was late to class, she explained she'd rescued a kitten and then made up for being late by showing us adorable pictures. Her lectures were always well spoken. She and the COMP110 team are the kindest educators I've had at UNC, and I'd recommend this class to anyone!
Prof. Byrnes is a great professor who cares about students learning the material. I stopped going to class besides the quizzes but I felt all the assignments were fair and didn't take me long at all. She is a great choice to take COMP 110 with.
I think your COMP110 experience depends on the group of professors that design the course material more than your lecturer, but Professor Byrnes made the class both interesting and engaging. The content in late October - early November gets difficult quickly, seek help from the TAs.
Made a gateway course in comp 110 difficult to understand for students with no comp background. Took the material and quizzes from Kris Jorden but fails to teach this material. Overall she was very kind but did not teach the basics of comp well thus resulting in many students getting bad grades on assignments and quizzes.
Course design is ok, since her TAs are very helpful. Did not see herself with students much though. 110 is really just a plain grind. You'll do well if you give it decent work for a 3-credit course.
Took this class with 0 experience in coding, and easily got an A. The lectures are great, the assignments are pretty easy, and the exercises are very doable if you spend a good amount of time. The pre-quiz practice questions are harder than the actual quizzes which is really nice.
I took COMP 110 with Prof. Byrnes in Fall 2024 having no prior coding experience. The COMP 110 team is amazing! Byrnes had maternity leave and was replaced by Kris Jordan for the second half of the semester; thanks to her, the transition was nearly seamless. I thought she was a solid teacher on her own.
Professor Byrnes is the best! She is a great professor, especially for a class like COMP 455. Extra credit is given for solving homework and quizzes are very manageable with study.
I am really bad at COMP110 and would not recommend taking it if you can avoid it, but it is required for many majors so if you're gonna take it, Byrnes is a great professor. She knows her stuff and is very kind. Class is hard but that's lowkey just me, if you lock in from the beginning (AVOID RELYING ON AI) it will be fine.
Alyssa is great, and so are the COMP110 TAs. Coming from someone with ZERO prior coding experience, I won't lie, this class is NOT easy. Seek help from the TAs early and often!!! Content isn't super hard, it's just a plain grind. Lock in, DON'T USE AI, ask for help, and you'll succeed. Good class to meet bio major supplemental math credit.
Definitely the best professor to take COMP 110 with. As someone who had never touched a line of code before in my life, lectures were extremely interesting and the content never felt like too much. Assignments were dispersed throughout the semester and never felt like too much. Just practice memory diagrams before each exam and you'll do great.
This was my first time coding, and Dr. Byrnes was amazing! She explained things clearly and was very nice. It was fairly easy to pick up the material. EC is given if you turn in exercises early. Quiz practice questions are harder than the quiz questions. Practice memory diagrams, go to office hours, go to quiz review sessions, and you will be set!
i was terrified of comp bc i've never coded in my life, but comp110 with dr. byrnes was super helpful with the basics of python. we do a lot of in-class practice/walkthroughs and the TAs are also really helpful. the quizzes are straight from the homework and the memory diagrams get easier with practice! 110 is nothing to be worried about.
Easy class and she's super generous with grading, you get bonus points for submitting things early and your lowest quiz gets replaced with your grade on the final if it's higher. Quizzes are also super simple and similar, if not easir, than hw/practice.
Not sure how the high ratings happened. Lectures were often confused, turnout dropped fast, and many who stayed left frustrated. I left the course disappointed in the quality of instruction. Would recommend another professor if you want solid understanding.
Maybe she's only really good at teaching 110, because the 455 lectures were overall the most confusing lectures I've ever attended. She didn't know what she was talking about and neither did we. At least the quiz questions were all off the homeworks, but like just know in advance that 90% of your grade will be exams.
No required attendance and slideshows posted so you can get by without going to class. Quizzes and final fairly straight forward and many question were taken from the practice questions she posted, which were often actually harder than the exam itself. Overall, she is very nice and would recommend taking the calls with her.
As someone who had no background of computer science, I was scared to take this class but it ended up being one of my favorites this semester! Go to lectures, submit homework early (you get extra credit), and take advantage of office hours! The quizzes are super similar to the practice questions provided on the class site. Would recommend!
