Dr. Jovanovic's lectures are essentially a bad summarization of the textbook. She provides no elaboration, you get more info from the text alone. Speaks as if her own experience is shared by everyone, like referring to Europeans as "us". She's nice enough and her class is an easy A but if you care about really learning she is not the prof for you.
When you try so hard but you don't succeeeed... at teaching.
First midterms took about 3.5 weeks to mark and it wasn't even marked by her. Talks a ton about her husband, daughter, and horses. Tells students she doesn't bother coming to school so if you want to meet with her, you have to make an appointment when it is convenient for HER. Literally reads the textbook as a lecture.
the final is brutal, cumulative with very specific stats and specific numbers. the answer choices are very close together and very specific to the decimal
There were 2 non-cumulative midterms which were mostly fair. The final was cumulative and you had to know tiny details (exact %'s, etc). She said it would be mostly lecture slide/video content and only about 5% from the textbook so most people studied that way, but that was a HUGE LIE! Almost every question was straight from the textbook!
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. two non-cumulative midterms which were alright considering the class had less material to review. but the final was cumulative (16 chapters worth of material) and asked SUCH SPECIFIC questions that nobody would attempt to memorize given all the material of this course. Her questions were worded terribly. not a good experience!!
She's a great lecturer and definitely knows our field. If you don't go to lectures, read the chapters and watch the videos she posts on D2L. Her lectures almost perfectly coincide with the textbook. She tells you not to study direct numbers and facts, BUT MAKE SURE YOU DO! Final was MUCH more difficult than both midterms and was also cumulative.
She's literally the worst professor I had in 4 years by a margin larger than her difference in grades between tests
Genuinely one of the laziest teaching styles I have ever experienced. She blatantly used our final to normalize her distribution. Content was delivered in a very biased manner. Refuses to meet with students.
For the final, you need to memorize every sentence of the 16 chapter textbook. She pulls out exact numbers, statistics, and sentences to test you on. The final dropped most students' letter grades but she does not care about her students enough to curve it. This hurts students who are trying to get highly competitive jobs or into graduate programs.
Really enjoyed the class and lectures but her exams were really hard.
I don't really understand where these negative comments come from. She was so engaging in her lectures and helpful when i met her outside of class. yes the final was harder but it was cummulative and the midterms werent. you need to attend lectures because she adds content not on slides. lots of reading.
Horrible experience. The midterms are extremely specific to the textbook which is American... Her lectures are basically a summary of the textbook sometimes using exact words from the textbook. Midterm questions are overly confusing and horribly written. I would say the only good thing is that there is participation grades that boost you.
Won't take again. Easy A class as long as you take really good notes off the textbook since that's the only info you'll be graded on. Her lectures are a poor summary of the textbook with no additional info so no need to take notes, the only reason to show up is the in class assignments. She is a disappointment of a prof. I want my money back.
The overall class content is super interesting however Javanovic makes it so much less enjoyable because her midterms are so hard for no reason. The midterm questions practically come out from the textbook as she basically reads off of her slides. wish she made it more enjoyable.
Not a difficult class or a bad prof. Had to read the whole textbook and attend class because the slides were skeletons and she went outside of the textbook with some of the information. She also did in class assignments (easy 10%), but sometimes reiterated the point too many times so lectures could get a little dry.
I found it impossible to get an A in her class, I showed up to lectures and came prepared by reading the chapters. I exerted so much effort in this class but cannot attain the grade I expected. Her lectures make me feel confident because it seems so straightforward but her midterms are impossible since the wording on the questions are weird.
I really enjoyed soci of work with her. Lecture slide mirrors the textbook very closely, but she adds little things that will show up on tests later. She did a good job of adding in articles to assist in understanding and scope of certain topics. Tests are fair and she is very clear on what to expect. Easy extra 10% for random group assignments.
The course content is interesting, however she does a sub-par job on delivery as everything she says is directly from the text, or Vanier Institute. I feel like there is a lot of opportunity with this subject material to engage with, and expand on and so it was kinda lame. Final is cumulative, you will need to know some numbers on certain things.
Professor Jovanovic was really helpful and she really wants you to succeed in her course. The exams were very fair. Be sure to read all the assigned readings for a given midterm- exam questions come from the readings, and the lecture notes. The exams were non cumulative. I highly recommend SOCI 393 with Professor Jovanovic.
I don't understand why she has such a low rating, I really enjoyed her class. You definitely need to take thorough notes for the readings, but as long as you're actually putting in effort you'll do well. She was enthusiastic and interesting to listen to, and her tests were very straightforward. I will definitely be taking more of her classes!
Literally the least useless prof I've ever had. All of her lectures were read out of the textbook and she tests on tiny insignificant aspects of the textbook which she didnt even cover in class. The tests were also incredibly poorly written
Professor Jovanovic is really nice and cares about her students! I thought her tests were fair and lectures were straight from the textbook so it helped to read it so you knew everything. She tests on little things but everything is fair game. Shes very passionate about the stuff she teaches which helped!
Her lectures will fool you into thinking this class will be a walk in the park. but don't fall for it. She handles the slides as they'll be exactly what you'll be tested on, but prepare to be tested on 5% of what she actually talks about in class. Her final exam was 100 questions of nonsense and every one of the the answers could've be correct.
She is a great lecturer and keeps class content interesting. Don't be fooled into thinking this class will be an easy A. Test were fair but she tended to focus on things she said in class. Even if you take notes and attend class I still found I missed some "important" aspects of class lectures. Be prepared to take good notes.
She consistently let our class out 15 minutes early which was nice, but honestly the lectures are just her reading from her slides that are directly taken from the textbook. I enjoyed the in class assignments, but the tests ended up being oddly specific. It's not necessarily a hard class, just make sure to study statistics and facts for tests.
her exams were fair and class content was interesting.
She was a decent prof. Her lectures were kind of useless because she read from the powerpoint and the powerpoint barely had any info on it. She had in class assignments that were worth 15% that were super easy. Her tests were very specific so you have to read the textbook really well.
Dr. Jovanovic is passionate about the topics which makes lecture more enjoyable. If it weren't for the in class assignments worth 15% class would be unnecessary, reading the textbook and writing notes is really all you need. The chapters are pretty long. The midterms were pretty easy and mostly concepts but the final had a lot more stats and facts
Make sure you're genuinely interested in soci because there is a lot of reading to do. Her slides in class are helpful but there are also questions from the textbook that aren't mentioned in class. The midterms are more focused on general trends and concepts and the final has a lot more specific numbers. She's amazing if you actually like soci.
Lectures were pretty much useless as she basically read her slides which were a summary of the textbook chapters. Although there was a lot of readings assigned, the textbook was quite enjoyable. Aside from attending class for in-class activities, it's not necessary to go. Her tests were relatively easy as long as you read the textbook.
Terrible professor. Being a teacher is the wrong line of work for her. If you read the textbool and come to class, this will be a simple A. But you learn absolutely nothing and she is the laziest professor in the world. Ends every class 40 minutes early without even going through her full slide deck. Can't believe I paid money for this instruction
She just reads off of the slides which are directly from the textbook. She is one of the most stuck up, rudest professors I've ever had. If you're looking for an easy a and don't care about the instruction then take a class with her, if you do care, save your money
You won't pass this class unless you memorize the text word for word. Her tests are so specific & barely have anything to do with her lectures. She is super stuck up and not a prof who cares about her students! I was in between letter grades by 0.2% and she wouldn't even consider rounding me. She also made tests 1q. per page on D2L with no skipping
Memorize the text....
The content of the course is interesting and decently easy, but take this class with a different prof. She has no consideration for technical difficulties or complications online, as well as is quite rude when responding to emails from students. The tests are also based ONLY on textbook material, so make sure to read it.
I can only speak for online only, but she is so far the worst prof I've ever had. Her lectures are simplistic and her "teaching" comprises of a voice over that is so general, yet her tests comprise of the most specific questions on concepts that were never taught in the lecture. Read the textbook, memorize the textbook, and good luck.
Not very good with online classes. Her lectures were basically just summarizations of the textbook. I also find assigning an assignment every week is a little overkill. Her test questions are very specific and don't cover broad/relevant concepts. I don't think I would take another class with her again.
Honestly did not learn one thing in her class. She just uses big words to sound smart but in fact the topics and ideas she lectures about are so simple. Is very rude in emails. A large part of the course is her bragging about her personal accomplishments. There are better, easier electives out there, where you will also learn something useful.
Her lectures are almost word for word from the textbook with voiceovers that repeat everything on the slide but in different words. The test are very unfair as they are very textbook specific, and doesn't allow to go back to questions even though it was 60 questions long. She also doesn't allow her students to see what questions they got wrong.
I honestly dunno why anyone would give her a bad review. She posted lectures Monday morning for the whole week, as well as weekly assignments due Friday evenings that took 15 minutes max. Her tests were pretty straight forward. I finished the class with an A and I didn't study or read the textbook. Just took good lecture notes and I was fine
Like the person before me said. I don't know how you can give this class a negative review. Straight forward test, and easy reflections due every Friday. By far my most enjoyable class of the pandemic. I'm trying to get in to more of her classes for spring. I signed up for Rate my Prof just to counter-act all the negative posts.
Thinks we're robots and can analyze every page of the textbook and answer 60 questions in 60 minutes. Highly suggest not taking this professor for any sociology class and finding another. trust me.
I dont know what the last review is addressing for this class, she gave us 2 hours to do a 60 question quiz and it was fairly easy. I have never gone to class and I just read the textbook and I have an A+ so far and all her weekly reflections take 15 minutes max. Take this prof with this class if youre looking for an easy A
i hate this prof. she is so rude in emails. i love the class and the content but she made it the worst. heavy reliance on the textbook, and no effort in her lectures. just power points with audio here and there. at least i got an A tho so y'all stay safe. also her assignments are the worst, and she doesn't even update discussions, so lazy.
This prof sucks, doesn't really teach and just gives us the textbook as almost every single question is textbook based. The assignments are easy but if you take it with this prof you will feel ripped off. Very lazily taught but easy to get an A
She didn't even post real lectures it was just powerpoint with some slides where she talked for 30 seconds. We had weekly assignments which weren't even really related to the power-points they were always on a ted talk that somewhat touched on a singular topic we were going over. In my opinion they were a waste of time. Would not recommend her.
Idk what the bottom review is talking about but the weekly assignments were based on the textbook and all quiz questions were mainly based on the textbook. The review below this is what your grade might be if you don't get the textbook. Attendance is not mandatory because she doesn't really teach, she just reads off notes.
You may think the material is straightforward, but the test is NOT. Based on the most specific stats and other little irrelevant sentences from the textbook. Reflection assignments were marked easy as long as you did them. Other than that she was super nice and lectures were interesting.
Unfortunately I did not have a good experience in Alyssa Jovanovic's class. The midterm and the final were each worth 40% and extremely hard. The questions asked were so specific and niche that even with a timed "open book" exam, it was impossible to get a decent score. She tests memorization of random sentences in the textbook rather than theory.
One of the worst classes I have taken in the department. Lazily taught, simply posting the lecture slides to d2l and expecting the class to memorize textbook. Midterm and final, both worth 40% were structured horribly and referred to very specific sentences of the textbook rather than class concepts. Weekly projects based on ted talks were a waste.
She will not round your grade if you're at an 84.99999999999%. Has no sympathy, lectures are basically what's in the textbook nothing more. Tests you on SPECIFIC sentences in the textbook WORD for WORD. Overall an unreasonable prof. IF you just memorize the entire textbook then it can be an easy A.
Not worth the stress. One 10 minute lecture per week. Exams require you memorize every single sentence verbatim
I really enjoyed her class! The textbook was an easy read and everything was very straight forward. I could see how others may be upset with how closely she follows the textbook but I didn't mind. The videos she posted were often short and entertaining, a nice break from regular lecture. Easy A, super interesting content!
If you're looking for courses to fill your requirement for a sociology major/minor, just skip this one. This course is made up of 10min pre-recorded nothings and VERY heavy exams that are based purely on sporadic sentences throughout the textbook. Assignments and all lecture materials are irrelevant to the exams, prof is unaccommodating and RUDE.
Course consisted of weekly assignments, a midterm and then the final. Assignments were straightforward. I agree with the other comments that all of her lectures were a copy and paste of the important stuff in the textbook. The midterm and final mostly consisted of questions that were copied and pasted. TO SUCCEED IN THIS COURSE, CTRL-F THE TEXTBOOK
Gives essay's every week on the most specific topics. EVERY WEEK. It is absurd I had to drop. I had her last semester and her reflections were were easier for 303. I should've stuck with my gut and never taken her again
Even though I've graduated I still get nightmares about her class
She puts absolutely zero effort into her course. Her lectures are a JOKE. She just summarizes the textbook and doesn't provide any additional info. I can't stand the weekly reflections. This is my second class I've taken with her and I hate her even more than before
This class is a nightmare. Exams had questions the most obscure topics in the textbook. Weekly essays which were time consuming yet barely impact your grade. And her 2 minute lectures that do not adress anything that will be covered on exams. Had to drop the course half way so my gpa wouldn't take a massive hit. Avoid this prof at all cost!
Her exams and weekly reflections are ridiculous. I hate her class so much I think her whole purpose in life is to induce stress upon her students. Get ready to write basically essays every week for the most stupid and simple topics. Her exams were word for word sentences in the textbook, she is really feeding off online learning.
The content was objectively interesting but badly taught. Difficult to follow and the sound files were embedded into the PP slides so inaccessible if you didn't have PP. Textbook heavy and articles too. Weekly assignments vary in length but all too long. Difficult tests - stats and ideas mentioned in passing. No extensions for any reason.
The weekly reflections are pretty easy! Usually just a couple of paragraphs! Tests were pretty easy and the answers came directly from the textbook.
Does not care about her students. A classmate of mine had her laptop die before a deadline of an assignment, and they messaged Jovanovic explaining the situation but were still given an F. This is not the first student she has done this to either. You better never mess up or never need an extension because she WILL NOT give you one. Terrible Prof.
The weekly reflections were easy, but the tests were insanely specific to the textbook. To the point where if this class was in person I think the entire class would fail. She means well, the tests need to be less specific as it is a little insane
The content is very interesting but unfortunately the way she teaches is painful. The exams are ridiculous and the numerous one star reviews back that up. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER. This class made me contemplate things...unhealthy things. Any class with her will destroy your GPA
Content was interesting but I do not recommend this professor. Class was entirely done asynchronously. Weekly reflections were straightforward but there was no clear grading criteria, her expectations aren't clear. Midterm and final was hard even though it was online and openbook. She takes direct lines of text from the book onto the exam. 1/5
This class was okay but we had a reflection assignment due the night before our midterm which was pretty gnarly. Her test are worded questions very badly. I did well in the class but I see how it could be frustrating for some. If you're looking for an easy class I am not sure this is the one due to the reading and lectures - content is good though!
I took SOCI of work in the winter 2022 semester and I loved it. Dr J's weekly assignments were basically a personal reflection on the past week's content and it was like studying, but in assignment form. The exams were open book, the lectures weren't long and the textbook chapters are both short, and really interesting. GPA booster for sure
most ghatiya prof I have ever taken. lectures are completely dry and she literally repeats the same information and makes it sound more complicated than it needs to be. The reflection assignments are doable but the exams were so textbook specific and arbitrary, having very little to do with the lectures. pancho avoid at all costs.
Heavy lectures, but they are straight copy from the textbook the videos in the lectures are important. The textbook is very important and the question's are directly from there for exams. Not very personable or available outside of class.
One of the rudest profs at UofC, will not accommodate students under any circumstance. Had to write my midterm with Covid as "That's just how things go sometimes." She tests 90% word for word from the textbook while the other 10% is from one of the many tedtalks she assigns every week. If this class was in-person I'd fail.
One of the WORSE profs I've ever had. Her expectations for this class are mindblowing when we look at how she teaches. Going to her lectures is absolutely pointless because all she does is read the textbook pages. There is nothing insightful about anything she says. It's just tiring to listen to. Don't make the mistake of taking her class. -100/10
Not even done this class yet. She does the bare minimum of teaching this class (wordy slides and just reading off of it). Expects us to do min. 8 paragraphs of an assignment weekly, a midterm the day after one of the assignments due, and doesn't tolerate any late submissions. You'd think she'd make it slightly easier for a spring class, but no :)
she is the best ever
This teacher respects all of her students and has helped me progress in my life and career, 10/10 would recommend her for student who are ready to be challenged and come out a better overall person.
One of the worst profs I've had at UofC. Weekly assignments are basically weekly essays. Is not accommodating under any circumstance. Exams (90%) are based off the textbook, but it is the most tiniest detail that you will miss while reading the textbook. which makes test hard. Other 10% based on TEDtalks. And there are A LOT.
The worst class I've ever taken in my life. Her assignments are literal essays and it takes up a lot of time because she asks for textbook and lecture references. The midterm and exam are ridiculous, both written with a lot of trick questions. The time given for the tests is unfair and you are tested a lot on the tedtalks and videos in the lecture.
Weekly assignments didn't add to my learning of the course (waste of time). Exams (altogether worth 70% of final grade) were filled with many difficult questions and weird answers that required lots of reading before you answered, all with a short time limit (90 mins, 30 which were for tech issues??) lol i wasted my time in this course.
Weekly assignments were a lot of work because you needed to have references and about 2 detailed paragraphs per question. The midterm and final were pretty hard because of how she worded the questions. You do not have enough time to complete the exam because of this, so better read the textbook like 10 times before the exams. Avoid if you can.
The class is interesting but the lectures are copy and paste from the textbook. Lectures are PowerPoints with voiceovers on maybe 5 slides, the rest is just notes. The assignments are basically a weekly essay. Exams were based on the tiniest fact from the textbook and were not a way of testing your knowledge.
I really enjoyed the class! Personally, I felt the weekly assignments helped me understand the material better. Make sure to read the textbook and watch EVERY video she uses in her power points as there's a chance it could be on the tests (even if the video is 30 seconds).
Exams made no sense, nothing to do with understanding the content more to do with how fast can you find the answer out of the textbook. Not really worth it for a class online. Felt like the assignments were a lot of work for a very small portion of the grade.
This class was disappointing. Asynchronous, lecture slides were copy-paste from the textbook, audio attachments were overly complex, and test questions are copy-paste from the textbook. However, the most disappointing part is that this class wasn't very engaging and I feel I didn't learn much. I wouldn't take another class with Dr. Jovanovic.
Tests have nothing to do with how well u know the material. Exam 1 I studied minimally for, got a B-, Exam 2, studied my ars off and got another B-. Final exam, I just said F it, didn't watch any lectures or read the text and scored an A+. Lectures consist of reading the textbook, changing a couple of words and calling it "additional information".
Do not take this class. Lectures are very boring and heavily relies on the textbook for all of her information. Exams do not prove your understanding of the course material but rather your ability to pick out minute details from the textbook. There are test questions regarding her own personal experiences. This class is a ton of work.
I do not recommend taking this class. The professor tests on minuscule details and has overly complex audios that accompany her slides. She also tests on her own personal experiences. The tests are not based on your knowledge but rather how fast you can find the answer. Test questions are reading comp based. Assignments take some time but are easy.
Reflection assignments are super tedious and useless as they are only worth 10%. The tests are a race against time and how fast you find the answer from the textbook and ted talks. The lectures are useless as she just reads off the slide and calls it "additional information". I might have to use CG grade for this class as its quite tough to do well
Save yourself from taking any of her classes. They are pre recorded from 2020 and she just changes the pictures on the slide. It is a complete waste of money. She tests on trick questions from the textbook and tests you on your ability to remember minor details versus understanding the topic. She also makes you watch hours of useless videos.
This professor has structured this course terribly to say the least. It was hard to follow along at times and I wasted a lot of time doing the lecture slides when I could have just read the textbook. Her assignments are extremely long and the tests are unclear and wordy. Do not take this class unless you wanted to be tested on irrelevant details.
Horribly average prof, the class is easy if you pay attention and take good notes on the text and supplementary materials. Attempts to make the class engaging with the reflections but they usually are just underwhelming. Also did not learn much soci, and focused more on geriatrics which could be it's own discipline but feels vaguely soci disguised.
I felt super overwhelmed with this class. I am a soci major and I'm in my 5th year and found this class to be worse than my 400 level classes. I found the material to be interesting but the delivery was terrible. The assignments were somewhat simple but took an eternity to complete because you need to cite the lecture and textbook.
Would not recommend this professor to my worst enemy, I was excited to take this class initially as it seemed like it could be an interesting topic and I still believe it could be if it where taught by absolutely anyone else. Her lectures make no sense and the tests are unnecessarily confusing because of the way she words the answers. BEWARE!!
Tbh the weekly assignments are a lot of writing but the thing is it's very easy work. She makes it clear what she expects you to do on the assignments, so its easy to get an A+ on them. The tests do require you to know quotes word for word, but they are open book tests. Take this class if you don't mind writing assignments.
The expectations for the written assignments far exceeded the 5% grade weight. These reflections were hands down the worst of all the weekly reflections I've completed during my degree. You'll likely fair well on the exams if you have strong reading comprehension. Watch the video links in the lectures, there will be exam questions on them.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had! She is rigid, and lacks compassion. Her questions are overly complicated and she does not offer any extensions for her very demanding and stressful weekly assignments. I would not recommend this class at all. The worst experience at this university for sure, and the worst professor ever.
Her online classes are manageable but content heavy. If you don't like writing, you won't like her teaching style since she has weekly assignments that are 6 paragraphs minimum plus 4 lectures per week. She's inconsiderate towards extenuating circumstances. I don't recommend her but she you can get a good grade if you stay on top of things.
Weekly assignments with minimum 6-paragraph answers and STRICT deadline. Her lectures are powerpoints with audio attached and some video clips. We had articles and powerpoints for the articles and then a textbook and powerpoints for the textbook. Its a lot of work to do especially if you have other commitments such as a job or children to raise.
Telling students that being in the hospital isn't a valid excuse to hand something in late is wiiiiiild. She has it written in the outline. I guess if I have an ambulance coming to get me I will be sure to tell them to hold on cause I gotta submit an assignment first. Not that it happens often, but still. She should be more careful with her words.
If you have to take this class, take it with someone else. She is not lenient in the slightest if there are any complications in your life that makes you unable to submit an assignment on time. It's like she wants you to fail.
I enjoyed the actual content of this course, but it was overshadowed by Dr. Jovanovic's awful and unfair policies regarding late assignments. She states in the course outline that she will not accept late submission under ANY circumstances (exceptional or not). She even says that being in the hospital is not a valid excuse for a late submission!!!!
the most unaccommodating prof I've ever had- she posts her lectures in powerpoint format with embedded audio, which is inaccessible if you have a mac or chromebook. When students asked for help, she basically said figure it out. If you're going to run a course online, make it accessible to EVERYONE
You have weekly reflection assignments about 4-5 paragraphs, she provides clear criteria, where if you write the number of paragraphs and use textbook references you get 100%. Her tests are fair, questions are from the textbook and lecture audios so study from those. Lots of bad reviews are from lazy people, who don't do what she asks. She is 10/10
Took SOCI 393 in Summer 2023, amazing prof. Do the required number of paragraphs, use textbook references to back up your arguments on assignments you get easy 100's. Her tests are based on lecture and what she said word for word, and textbook terms and main ideas. Love Dr. Jovanovic, not sure why she has so many bad reviews.
70% of your grade is tests. You have students crying about how hard they are when all you need to do is read the textbook and take notes. Listen to her lectures and when she talks about her dissertation and research, TAKE NOTES!!!!!
Weekly assignments, easy if you write the number of paragraphs. Tests are easy just read the text and listen to the lectures. All of these bad reviews are from people who don't do what she asks on assignments, dont read instructions and lack the IQ to navigate D2L, blaming it on her. Her tests are not hard, just read the textbook.
Clearly does not care about being a teacher. No passion and makes students bend over backwards while not willing to do the same.
Great prof. She actually cares about the students and wants them to succeed. I Would want her again, great.
Do what she asks on the assignments, easy A+. Tests are based on questions from lecture audios and videos and textbook reading. Read the textbook. Watch the Lectures. Write the number of paragraphs in assignments. You will get an A.
Tbh the weekly assignments are a lot of writing but the thing is it's very easy work. She makes it clear what she expects you to do on the assignments, so its easy to get an A+ on them. The tests are quite wordy but still easy
Jovanovic was very kind, caring, and knowledgeable about what she was teaching. She created slideshows that were easy to follow and practice questions that helped with study for exams. She responded to emails quickly and students questions on D2L. If you are able to, take this course with her!
Lots of bad reviews from lazy students. Hand in your assignments on time, and do your work. Easy A
Have her for Sociology of Aging right now, she is great. Assignments are 4-5 paragraphs weekly but relatively easy. Tests are word for word from the textbook, so study from there. The multitude of bad reviews are from students who suck at online courses and asynchronous and blame the prof.
She makes content available at the beginning of each week, so you only have seven days to listen to her over-complicate everything, talk about her PhD work, watch useless TED Talks, and complete the overly complicated and trivial assignments. Also, you better not get sick or have any emergencies, because she doesn't care and won't accommodate you.
Great prof, slideshows are easy to follow along to, assignments really aren't that bad can be kinda long though. Tests are easy, usually based on what she says in lecture and some additional facts from the readings.
Requires weekly assignments which loosely correlate to the course content, more personal reflection questions that don't assist in learning retention. Lectures were inaccessible, the powerpoints had to be downloaded from D2L, uploaded to Microsoft 365 and then played as a presentation to access the content. Grading and feedback inconsistent.
Easy content made difficult by the formatting of the tests. Test questions are formed very poorly and the lack of proper lectures make it impossible to do well. Tests are largely based on specific details from the textbook not really testing your knowledge. Avoid if possible.
The course was overall not very engaging, it was hard to stay interested throughout the especially with the weekly assignment due dates. It was tedious and redundant and took the fun out of learning the material. Her tests are very textbook heavy, but they were open book so it was relatively easy. If you are looking for a fun class keep looking...
People complain about everything LMAOOO Like seriously, if you write the required number of paragraphs for the assignment and show an attempt to engage with course content you get an A+. The tests are ripped from the textbook and slides you don't have to study. People put in zero effort and complain whey they do bad. Take her courses, very flexible
This class is easy, first A+ in my soci degree other than Soci 321. Do the assignments and read the instructions, for the tests read the textbook and listen to her voice audios attached to some of the slides YOU WILL DO GREAT. People always complain because she doesn't accept late assignments but seriously... you have a week to submit it LOL.
not as terrible but also not as great as other reviews say. lectures aren't engaging at all, weekly assignments are tedious at best, and an unforgiving late assignment policy makes this easy to hate BUT its also easy to get a passing grade. if ur looking specifically for something online, this will do fine but be prepared to actually stay on track.
I think a lot of students dislike her because the workload of doing a written assignment (approx 3-5 paragraphs) every week for the entire semester is a lot. I found them quite easy if you referenced her notes and ensured you wrote the correct length. The exams are open book, and as long as you know what content to search for, they are easy A's.
If you reference lecture and textbook material, and show minimal effort to reflect on the weekly content you get A+ on the assignments. The exams are open book and sometimes test you on specific details but they are open book. People love complaining and blaming the professor when they do bad lol, this class is so easy to keep up with and do good
The class is very dry as it revolves around PowerPoints with voice-overs and weekly assignments which are very long and tedious. The tests are also a bit challenging. You can take this class as an option but be prepared to stay on track throughout the semester or else you will fail.
This course delivered was asynchronous, this made it relatively "easy" in the way that I did not need to go to class or study that much. There was a midterm and a final and 10 mini written assignments. They were also somewhat easy and gaded pretty easily too. The online lectures weren't too bad either and had audio on them too.
This course delivered was asynchronous, this made it relatively "easy" in the way that I did not need to go to class or study that much. With that being said, there was a midterm and a final and 10 mini written assignments. They were also somewhat easy and gaded pretty easily too. The only thing is that the professor was strict with extensions.
You need to read A LOT and watch ALL lecture material. I took another class with her and wasn't too bad but this classes exams weren't the best. They were market more or so on a reading comprehension basis which shocked the class, we were not told this and answered with what question we thought was the right answer. weekly assignments are okay.
Dr. Jovanovic is awesome on the whole, and I am glad that I took her summer class in work sociology. She's very intelligent and posts everything online. That said, lots and lots of work for people who are not sociology majors, and the assignments go beyond textbook material into extensive journal articles too. Overall, I'd recommend.
Weekly assignments not too difficult but require a fair amount of time every weekl. Worst part is that this course costs like $700 but all she did was copy and paste from the textbook and read off of her slides. If you want to learn this material, just buy the text and read it yourself. Its like we didn't have a prof.
Love this prof, her courses allow for flexibility so I can work on Mondays, Wednesdays, fridays and attend in person classes on tues/thrus. Never had a problem with her, listened to the lectures, did the assignments, did the tests and did great!
70% of your grade is tests. You have students crying about how hard they are when all you need to do is read the textbook and take notes. Listen to her lectures and when she talks about her dissertation and research, TAKE NOTES!!!!!
Great prof, slideshows are easy to follow along to, assignments really aren't that bad can be kinda long though. Tests are easy, usually based on what she says in lecture and some additional facts from the readings.
Her marking algorithm is inconsistent, what you do on one assignment may not be graded the same on another, such as with number of citations. The weekly reflections can be too demanding sometimes. One assignment was write 3 paragraphs on a meme you made. 3 for a MEME???? One of the weekly reflections ended up being longer than my LWSO final essay.
This prof is incompetent. I got an A and I wouldn't take one of her classes again if you paid me. She offers nothing original or intelligent, just copy & pastes from the textbook. Grading is inconsistent, just based off arbitrary guidelines that seem to change from one week to the next. Content is easy to learn but the headache isn't worth it.
This prof is incompetent. I got an A and I wouldn't take this class again if you paid me. She contributes nothing original or intelligent, just copy & pastes from the textbook. Grading is inconsistent and based on arbitrary guidelines that seem to change from one week to the next. Content is easy, but not worth the headache of dealing with her.
I do not recommend any class "taught" by this professor. The exams are so poorly designed you will learn absolutely nothing from them since the majority of her test structure is just reading comprehension with very little to do with how you understand the course material and your ability to apply the information.
Terrible professor. You will not learn a single thing in any of her class. Exams are ridiculously specific and pick on content that is so irrelevant. Weekly reflections too demanding for the content. So so so so so surprised that she still teaches here considering how many poor reviews she has.
You are not tested on your understanding of the course, you're tested on how well you memorized the textbook. Studying felt like a huge waste of time before the tests, as many of the questions are based around a small line from the textbook.
All I did for this class was watch the lectures and read the textbook, and got full marks on all reflection assignments and did extremely well on the tests. I believe the course was fair and not sure why all the reviews are so terrible.
Definitely one of the laziest professors I've ever had. All of her courses follow the exact same format (I've also unfortunately taken 371 with her) and all her feedback is the same four recycled phrases. You won't actually learn anything directly from her since all she does is reword what's already in the textbook. Don't waste your money or time.
Not sure why the rating is so low. She makes her expectations exceedingly clear. Make time to read the textbook and watch the lectures, go in-depth on the reflections, and you'll be fine. Some test questions are confusing and the reflections are VERY long but it wasn't that difficult once you knew what she wanted.
Rigid and unwavering on deadlines even for legitimate excuses. Unsympathetic and impersonal.
Not sure why she gets a lot of hate. I am taking her summer SOCI 393 class and it's not difficult. Just follow the slides and read the textbook. The material is interesting and the assignments are straightforward with lots of reflection on your own experiences. It's hard to get anything less than an A.
Sorry. I get that her classes are 'easy' because all the info is 'right there' but there isnt any actual learning that I took from it. She has strict deadlines which respectfully she sets out early in the semester but tbh, life happens unexpectedly. sometimes, one week isnt enough to adjust to life without a parent... Uncaring. SNS.
This individual has no business teaching. I'm sure they're a great researcher and worker, and honestly their slides are actually understandable, but their personality and the way this professor marks work is abysmal. Passive-aggressive, condescending, and nit-picky in feedback. Student-professor relations are not present with this one.
Weekly assignments are not hard but just annoying, she takes off lots of points for simple things, for example not citing her slides enough, even though they are just bare bones bullet points from the textbook and overall pretty useless
The lectures are boring but thankfully short. Takes off marks on assignments for the most arbitrary reasons. She should've stuck to research and not taught.
Ridiculous ratings from others. Dr J is amazing. The asynchronous classes are so convenient for my schedule and exams are great! Reflection assignments take maybe 2 hours and are easy to complete. This class is straight up: do the work on time, study, and you'll get the grade you work for. Im happy i took it as an arts option :D would take again!!
My last straw was having a midterm the very next day after thanksgiving, when there was a weekly assignment due just two days before that. AND get this... there was nothing else due the week of the midterm so there was a whole week that could've been for STUDYING the midterm had it been due the weekend like any other assignment in her class...
While expectations are clear, the workload can be heavy - long reflections and confusing test questions. However, engaging with the course materials and using study tools like Unstuckstudy can make it manageable. Overall, a fair course if you put in the effort.
it's ridiculous that she even gets any good ratings, tbh. never gives you proper feedback, and when there is feedback, it's the same thing repeated. literally ALWAYS takes points away for something nonsensical. plus, she doesn't even round marks up. 0.3% away from an A? you're rounded down. 0/10, save yourself.
lectures are interesting. you'll get a good mark as long as you do the lectures and skim thru the readings. there are weekly assignments, but they aren't too difficult (only have to write 4 paragraphs on personal experiences). although she's not accommodating (NO extensions), the workload isn't too bad and she drops the 2 lowest assignment grades.
Worst prof I've had. Docks marks for no reason. She asks us to mention the slide throughout assignment when they are clearly just copied off the textbook, but for some reason text book is not enough. Doesn't round up grades. Unfriendly in ever interaction I've had with her. This course was light and she managed to make it unbearable.
There are ten reflection assignments, one midterm, and one final. She provides clear guidelines on what she expects for each assignment - once you follow the instructions you're guaranteed full marks on each assignment. The exams were tough - although it's online you MUST study as if it were an in-person class to succeed.
Assignments were easy peasy, exams were a different story. The questions were less focused on the content and more a test of how much attention you paid to minuscule details that were mentioned maybe once in passing. I wouldn't recommend this course as an option, a decent grade honestly required even more time/effort than capstone courses do.
She's horrible. If you have the option, do not take a class with her. I have had biology classes easier than this class. Tests are horrible because she tests on tiny details she said in lectures/tests on VERY random areas of the textbook that are impossible to find and usually are not important either. She also talks incredibly slowly.
Lots of readings, some of the articles were quite long, same with certain textbook chapters. If you do the work, take notes, and pay attention you should be fine. Assignment grading was strict, you need to have enough citations from the week's content in the assignments, but knowing that now I would still take another class from her!
I don't know what her problem is. it was all asynchronous. long, unhelpful slides with hardly any words for these janky videos from 2013. she puts in negative effort. She also has no room whatsoever for an extension on anything. you could get hit by a car, your house could burn down and she wouldn't give you any sympathy. Avoid at all costs.
Assignment criteria is clear, if you follow it, you will get 100%. Tests are very detailed, it's basically testing whether or not, you actually listened to the recorded lectures and watched the attached videos. It's less content-based and more based on engaging by doing the course work assigned.
Gave me a zero on an assignment because she didn't like the file format I submitted even though it was the exact same file that she gave us to download from D2L, so ridiculous
A good online course, with reflection assignments being easy. The exams however, are not easy!
honestly one of the most annoying professors I've ever had. she is extremely rude and treats her students as though they are robots. she is not understanding and expects absolutely no mistakes, she refuses to take into account that we are just students. but overall class material isn't very hard, midterm is pretty okay since its an online class.
She uses outdated lectures from COVID...making some things not relevant anymore. Extremely picky on grading assignments, despite the clear grading criteria. If you have one grammar error get ready to lose 10%. Midterms are extremely difficult and incoherent with questions being all over the place and not making sense. AVOID!
you will rarely encounter a prof so frustrating. she is so picky about reflection assignments and will dock 25% marks for for leaving a word unbolded, for example. she has 0 respect nor sympathy for her students. super condescending.. she also uses old recorded lectures from years ago so she genuinely does nothing but waste your time.
You HAVE to have the textbook for citations in the weekly reflections. Plagiarized copies don't normally have page numbers, but you can use the index to guess what page something is on. She treats this class like it's more important than it is. She doesn't seem to understand that it is an arts class people are taking as an elective.
Incredibly nitpicky with grading and stubborn and standoffish over email. She didn't have any enthusiasm for the course making the material boring. The class could have been interesting and fun if it had a different professor.
People are too harsh. Most profs I've had don't round and she drops 2/10 assignment grades(which are a guaranteed 100% if you can follow basic instructions). The tests are hard, but I emailed her for support to improve on the final and she was so kind and thorough via email(and I improved my score!). Not understanding all the reviews on here LOL.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. This professor clearly doesn't understand that her students are her meal ticket. Her slide content is 5 years out of date. Her reflection assignments take hours, her presentations are choppy and the sound quality is equal to the first posed YouTube video. High expectations for her students, but not for herself. AVOID!!!
People are so dramatic, she is so nice and caring. Just do your reflections and watch the lectures. All you need to do for the reflections is cite the lectures and textbook. She just wants to make sure your understanding and interacting with the content. I enjoyed this course.
I like her Sociology classes. She is straight to the point and easy to understand---unlike some other Sociology professors who complicate things for no reason. Reflections are easy, and yes, tests can be a bit hard cause there are options to trick you. 10/10
She drops your two lowest reflection grades, which is really generous. If you keep getting bad grades even after that, then that is on you. Put in work and you will do good.
She is an awful prof and is very entitled for someone that teaches a sociology course. Difficult to communicate with as she is short with you over email. Will pull your assignments apart for the smallest things. Do not take class with her at all cost.
Once you learn what she looks for it's very easy For the reflections, each paragraph should include a citation from the text, the ppt, and the article/article ppt (if applicable). I got 100 on all the reflections and it would take me an hour each Tests are more specific but open book. Take detailed notes and use ctrl f for the textbook
I took SOCI 373 this spring online. The format was good because we could do it by ourselves and we just had to read through 2 chapters in the textbook and 2 slides per week. Her assignments were vague in terms of length ie. “write a detailed paragraph” (no exact word count). The exams were difficult because they test on facts not big picture ideas.
Honestly I don't think she's the biggest fan on critical thinking skills. She seems to want you to only talk about the materials during assignments and link both the ppt AND the mandatory textbook a dozen times in your paragraph just to get a chance at full points. Just be a copy and paste of the course material and you'll do fine
I think it's kind of a downer she wants you to quote the textbook/ppt a lot since I think it makes it a lot less fun vs a lot of other soci profs. it seems like you're constantly copying and pasting the textbook but she drops your lowest reflection grade, so I really don't think she's all that terrible. really picky about formatting so be careful!
Communicating with this prof is a nightmare. She is entitled, harsh, and short. I found her behaviour to be ironic for a prof who teaches about equity and accessibility. Take this class if you can be a copy and paste machine. Don't ever expect anything (answers, clarification, grace) from emailing her.
Instructions can be vague or worded in ways that allow for multiple interpretations. Hefty deductions are applied for misinterpretations. Exam wording it is at times unclear, confusing, or not nuanced enough for the topic. While likely not intentional, her communication often feels patronizing and guarded. Limited to no feedback is provided
I had the privilege of taking SOCI 303, 373, and 393 with Dr. Jovanovic. She is a very fair marker on the assignments, be clear, connect the themes of the text and her PPT notes to your ideas and life story, and you will be absolutely fine. The exams are tricky, but read the book, understand overall ideas, and study hard, she is a great prof.
Someone should tell her that not giving extensions, under any circumstances, isn't something to brag about. Also forced us to buy a textbook that was >$90 for 90 days and yes she would check to make sure you used the right textbook, if there were inconsistencies with page numbers she would dock marks.
