One of the most frustrating professors I've ever had. Continually changes the requirements for papers after they have been turned in and makes you write them again. Nearly all of the points are earned by writing group research papers. The groups have 5 people and no individual grade. So one or two people end up doing all the work!

He needs to go back Africa

If your looking for a hard class with a ridiculuos amount of work and a horrible professor then Dr. sall is your man. He makes African students such as myself resent African history because he punishes the students because of our lack of knowledge of African history that's not taught in highschool curriculum. You have been warned.

The worst teacher in the history of my college career. He doesnt have a set criteria for his papers and he grades by whatever mood he is in. He changes the syllabus everyday he adds things at random times to the syllabus...like a 15 min presentation due the next class. Difficult to talk to and doesnt like Americans (he thinks we are stupid & rude).

He is not a good professor Im a senior and I cant graduate because he failed me on all my parents. Dr Sall is going to cost me another year and a extra $3650.

He has no idea what he wants from his students, and governs class depending on his mood for the day. He made us write 7 papers that he graded harshly on but I swear he didnt even read!!!We turned in the same papers without corrections and made an A the second time. He comes up with stupid assignments at random! Take only if you're punshing yousel

this is the absolute WORST TEACHER THAT I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT UT. THIS GUY DOESNT HAVE A CLUE AS TO WHATS GOING ON AND HE IS A VERY IRRATIONAL TEACHER. If you are reading this, get out now! Don't pass go or collect 200 dollars. This class is the devil! He tests over soo much pointless crap and gives you no study guide! HE DOESN'T EVEN REALLY TEACH! He makes us do presentations and then we watch like videos out the 80's about how great Africa is. Yeah, in short, RUN!

This is by far the worst teacher i have ever had at UT. Like everyone below me, He is AWFUL!!!! We teach the class and it sucks having to "learn" the material from people who don't know any more than i do. And then when you try as hard as you can, he bashes you for not doing it well enough. WELL YOU TEACH IT THEN!

Terrible is the only word to describe his teaching, U will teach yourself, and Expect to get scolded or put out of class one or two time!! He hates computers and cell phones!! the only thing I'm glad about is I am threw with his class!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!

So, I had Saul for first year studies. You would think FYS would be a great help & an easy GPA booster. But, NO not with this guy! He assigns a ridiculous amount of hw (more than I had in my chem class!) He basically screwed me over by not sending me these random assignments he would send in e-mail. Oh and he LOVES to talk about his religion.AWFUL

Teaches the class by forcing students to watch very boring documentaries and give "chapter presentations." Rarely does any teaching himself. Makes you turn in your notes on every chapter. (Type them! Most students don't realize you can do that.) Overall, I'd recommend taking another professor for this class.

Very opinionated and defensive of his beliefs. TERRIBLE TEACHER!!! very unorganized and confusing. he is not very clear and gives out really tough work. Avoid at all causes. I am currently in his class at this moment and he walked out and left us on our own and no one knows what we are supposed to be doing and we are all very confused

II'm presently in his course, well I'm withdrawing, and he is truly the worst instructor I've ever had. He doesn't teach--EVER. The internet was down the other day so he couldn't play youtube videos so he started a group discussion on Black Egypt. This may sound great, a teacher that doesn't teach, but the workload is unreal and you'll get no help.

This is the worst teacher to take for African Studies he hasn't you take notes on EVERYTHING, even a visit to the museum. Then he makes questions on the quiz about the smallest details, and the majority of the class makes no more than a 50. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS

This guy was just horrible. Worst teacher I have ever had. He is unbelievably disorganized and everything you do in this class is group work. You end up teaching yourself outside of class because he doesn't do anything in the actual class itself. Tests and quizzes are near impossible to pass way too specific and way too many sources to try to study

Worst teaching style. Yes he provides you with multiple of ec opportunites, but the group work is ridiculous. You can do better on the exams by going to his office hours, but he won't let you write the answers you got correct. Just the ones you got wrong. Then he'll change up the question so it doesn't matter what answer you write down 1/2 the time

Absolutely abhorred taking his class. Specifically picked a different professor (that made me shift my entire schedule) for the next class in the sequence. Only individual work is extra credit so, if you work or have a hard major, goooooood luck...

There is no way to put this nicely: he is truly awful. The quizzes are nearly impossible. The questions are fill in the blank and there are so many blanks in a row that you have no idea what he is asking. He won't email you back because, as he said, he "doesn't have time" He is also so particular in grading, that you won't ever get an A on anything

Dr. Sall expects you to put all of your time into his class without him putting in any. His open note quizzes and tests will pull sentences directly from the reads and if you did not write that exact sentence down you will be wrong. Throughout the semester I was on track to get a D in his class but he randomly changed it to an A. He is clueless..

He's super specific about trivial things, so make sure you take as many notes as possible because he WILL pull a random sentence out of the readings and expect the exact word to be put into the blank, even if that word is "search". His grading is a lot easier if he likes you/thinks you're trying, so GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Extra credit is also a must.

Dr. Sall's class is the absolute worst thing I have ever been through. I failed all of the tests and quizzes and I am an A student. Please avoid his class at all costs I would not recommend. He is nice and cares about your education but his teaching style is wrong for so many reasons.

I am an overall good student and I hated this class and him. He is so picky when it comes to grading yet he does not give any good grading criteria. His quizzes are stupidyou have to spend hours taking notes. His EC assignments are 3-5 page papers. Overall, he really is not a good person. He tries to portray this caring prof but he's terrible.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Dr. Sall does not teach, the students do. His exams and quizzes are a majority of your grade but he makes you fill in banks from direct sentences from the book, despite the handwritten notes you are allowed to have on tests it doesn't help because there is no way you can write the entire reading word for word.

This was the worst class and professor I have ever taken, I took it as a GPA booster and am scared I am going to fail. I have learned absolutely nothing and the tests and quizzes are over things the professor hasn't even noted on in class. The tests consist of random fill in the blank quotes that are randomly selected from the chapters. DO NOT TAKE

Okay, so Dr. Sall is a really cool guy but an awful teacher. He is very accepting and open but his class is literally the worst class i have ever taken. he has favorites that he gives extra credit to so if you want to take this class then make sure greet him every day and ask him how he is doing. the class environment is amazing, the prof is not

Dr. Sall does not know how to set up a class. EVERYTHING is group work & he picks groups. 5 group essays, a group research paper, a group presentations, group assessments... I did more work here than Organic chem... Only good thing is he lets you use notes but impossible test questions. Do NOT recommend unless you want to work your butt off for a C

The exams and quizzes have VERY specific questions and answers. He lets you use your notes, but if you didn't happen to write the exact date, value,etc he was looking for in the question, you're in trouble. The class is all over the place. In lecture, it's all about your opinion but when exam and quizzes come around, hard facts are all that matter.

Take this class if you like teaching yourself the course material because that's all you'll be doing. Doesn't specify exactly what will be on the quizzes. Quizzes are open-note but you have to basically copy the entire textbook because the questions are so specific. Tough grader. Most stressful class I've had this semester.

Dr. Sall is a smart guy, but not a good professor. He'll say something is due on a day different from what's on the syllabus, and if you tell him, he gets mad. Not helpful via email. Says the quizzes are based on the textbook, but then will say the textbook was wrong after you finish the quiz. I dropped this so fast, don't take him.

Dr. Sall seems like a great, interesting person, but he is not a good professor. His lectures consist completely of him asking if you did the readings and what you got from them, meaning there is literally no point in attending class - yet, he still takes attendance and participation is mandatory. Tests questions are extremely specific.

Dr. Sall seems like a cool guy, and the class is actually interesting. Still, be prepared to work your butt off for little recognition. His expectations are vague and inconsistent. His tests are super specific and sometimes directly contradict what you read. You teach yourself all of the material, yet attendance is still mandatory. So frustrating.

Unnecessarily difficult. He is hard to contact. He has good intentions, but is not a very good teacher in my experience. Dont recommend

The worst class I have taken in all of college. Each meeting was very frustrating as the communication of assignments was always changing or lacking. Expect him to reply to maybe 1/10 emails you send him. Very frustrating class all around to constantly be asking questions and rarely get a clear response. Would avoid at all costs.

Worst class I have ever taken. Under no circumstances should anyone take this class, regardless of GPA. you will not do well, spend upwards 15+ hours a week reading, and he is not responsive.

I would NEVER take him. He IS a HORRIBLE professor. EVERY. SINGLE. TEST. is a word search. Do not be fooled by his kind words. How can someone be from Africa but not even teach fr and make us watch LONG and boring videos. Not worth the credit at all :)

There is so much to say I could very well write the 8 page final paper on all of my grievances for the way he conducts his class. The general status of the class could only be described as a complete disaster. Get ready to hear the same sermon word for word every time you step into class, watch a video, and leave knowing nothing you did not before.

Dr. Sall is a sweet guy but this class is awful. The syllabus said that all quizzes/exams were going to be collab which was not true. Attendance is mandatory but all we do in that class is watch videos. The quizzes/exams ask the most obscure questions and most of the answers are direct quotes from the videos in class. Strict grader for the papers.

Dr. Sall is an awesome guy, but he is not a very good teacher.

He does not actually teach, mostly just plays videos that are easily accessible online. It wouldn't be too bothersome if attendance was not necessary, but your grade goes down significantly if you miss class. Would not recommend.

He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is rude and does not teach. He will embarrass you in front of the entire class if he sees you even glance at a phone, computer, or watch. Nothing is ever clear, and he will get mad at you for being confused. Class is extremely disorganized and mainly videos or rants targeted at the class.

Do NOT take this class if you have another option. He does not lecture at all or communicate with students. All of his classes are youtube video driven and on the quizzes he pulls direct quotes from those videos that are hours long. I didn't learn from this class that furthered my knowledge of the history of Africa. Don't waste your time/money.

If you work with classmates on quizzes and exams this class is an easy A. Know that attendance is mandatory and you probably won't learn anything of importance.

GO TO CLASS!!! Your grade heavily depends on it. Form a groupme with your classmates at the beginning if you want to pass, all the quizzes/exams are questions word for word from videos that he shows in class that are an hour long. If you do that, then you'll get a good grade. Also talks a lot about politics even though the class is not about that

Honestly thought the reviews were exaggerating. They're not, dropped it two weeks in. Paper every week, didn't know how to use a computer. Got angry with me because I emailed him not messaged him in Canvas?? Wanted you to use AI in your papers (idk man that's what he said). Really not worth the stress, just wait and find another prof!
