try to understand her challenge (impossible)
Lectures are optimal times to do other work because it's literally impossible to understand what she's trying to say
Try understanding her. It's a challenge.
Lectures are not very interesting or helpful. Reading the textbook and doing practice problems will leave you better off.
Not a bad prof, average difficulty professor, she will answer your questions clearly when you approach her. Doing well in the course, her lessons added with the assignments and practices prepared me enough for the quizzes and midterm. If you cannot understand her clearly, sit at the front half of the hall to hear her better.
Professor Jambuge takes time to clearly answer questions both in class and afterwards. Provides lots of study material for exams and puts extra emphasis on key topics in class. Some students mentioned not being able to hear/understand her properly. But, those sitting in the front half had little to no difficulties with this during lectures.
Great prof that makes sure to explain the concepts until the class understands them.
This prof is just suboptimal in every way possible. Notably, she is hard to understand, both physically and mentally.
She does have an accent, but if you pay attention you can understand her. The real issue is that the class talked over her constantly so she was hard to hear. Not a stellar prof but not a bad one either. Asking her questions during lecture usually doesn't go anywhere since she gets confused but she's clearly trying to help.
Amali is caring and does her best to teach, but unfortunately the way she teaches can be incredibly hard to understand. Her lectures are hard to follow, and she often gets off-topic by allowing students to ask and answer questions all class, but often the questions are misunderstood or answered badly.
Professor Jambuge does her best to teach and explain everything, but she was just incredibly hard to understand. She often misunderstands questions and gets side-tracked by them. I would not have survived this course if it weren't for Mark Van Raamsdonk's recorded lectures online.
Does not explain well during lectures. Doing lots of practice exams helped me through the course. PHYS 157 is not a very hard course.
I took Physics 131 with her during the summer. She tries to help but is just incredibly hard to understand in every way possible. Her quizzes are very hard with little time allotted. Less than half the class gets iclickers right on almost every question. Avoid taking her class if possible.
She is difficult to understand because of her accent, but what makes her a poor professor is how she struggles to explain topics linerarly. She works through problems much too quickly, and she does not explain her solutions. I attended other professors' lectures and watched tutorials online to make up for her lectures.
She is incredibly diffucult to understand due to her accent. She also doesnt understand nor properly answer student questions. Lacks the ability to commant attention of the class. Seems confused as she teaches and fails to teach in a linear way, or to explain her reasoning behind solutions when a student asks. She tries her best.
Not a good prof
Professor is hard to understand, lectures are useless but she does try to explain it as much as possible. 'A' for effort, but still would not take this prof. Textbooks will be your friend.
She doesn't put the homework up on canvas sometimes and is terrible at teaching, half the class stopped showing up after a few weeks and went to other sections. Avoid this class at all costs.
Does not answer questions clearly or explain topics. Impossible to understand.
hard to understand, and doesn't explain topics very well
This prof is by far the worst first year eng prof. Everyone is confused constantly. I would say the average iClicker percent for the correct answer is 20%. She will say clear and everyone will look around and she'll just go okay and continue on. Avoid at all costs. Watch van raamsdonk videos instead.
Avoid at all costs. Amali is a very kind person, but spent the entirety of the semester reading off of her prepared slides instead of teaching. Class felt like watching an hour long video. She would also get confused when students asked questions, to the point we stopped asking. Most of the class would get the clicker questions wrong too.
She does care, she's just often quite confused. The course itself is pretty good, edx is great, and there's lots of opportunity for extra credit, so honestly it didn't make too much of a difference for me.
She cares, but is not the right person to explain new concepts to incoming students.
She seems lovely but a terrible explainer and difficult to understand. Avoid taking her unless you like teaching yourself everything online.
Prof Amali had a hard time explaining the content. She tends to speedrun the content and speak at an extremely fast pace, and on top of that, her accent made it worse and she could not be understood at all. It was difficult to understand new material. I once asked her for clarification and it took so long to understand what she was trying to say.
I personally understood her accent but her explanations for concepts were very lacking and she didn't provide enough in-depth explanation on things. Additionally, she would go through slides very fast and a lot of people would be left confused. However, the course content itself was good and it was easy to get high grades on the edx homework.
Often seems as if she herself doesn't understand the concepts she is attempting to teach her students, was often stumped by some of the simplest questions, and or simply didn't answer students questions and told them to ask her after class, but which such answers would have been helpful to the rest of the class in regard to understanding of concept
Most of the time, it seemed as though she herself did not understand the concepts. She could not properly answer questions, and would often just confuse the issue. In order to do well, going to lectures isn't even helpful if you can find good online resources.
She is terrible at explaining the concepts and I feel like she has not understood them herself She makes every concept more confusing.. If you are in her section for phys157 you are better off relaying on YouTube and the textbook, don't waste your time by going to the lectures. Half of the class stopped attending the lectures halfway in the term.
Lectures were useful but were unclear, Jambuge sometimes struggled to answer/understand student's questions.
This school needs better physics teachers... just use edX and you'll be okay also watch other prof's lecture recordings. So sorry if you have her as your prof (I stopped going to the lectures).
Teaches very poorly and does not explain anything well. If you ask a question she never knows the answer. Avoid at all cost you learn nothing.
I've been consistently going to class and honestly, I've absorbed absolutely NOTHING. Shes hard to understand, has a thick accent, and tends to repeat herself multiple times. Makes it hard to follow.
Outline of a lecture with Professor Jambuge: 1. Reads off the slides 2. Student asks a question 3. Cannot answer and gets confused 4. Other students help her answer the question 5. Repeat
Dr. Jambuge was perhaps the least qualified person in the lecture hall to be teaching the course. She didn't seem to know physics, nor how to teach it, which was very unfortunate as her Ph.D. is in physics pedagogy. Funny how someone can get a degree in two areas that they know nothing about. A product of the system that continues to fail us all.
I made a rate my prof account just to give Jumbage a bad score. For the love of god, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Jumbage has a thick, unintelligible accent and zero teaching skills. The typical lecture will consist of gibberish followed by a student asking a simple question that will confuse her. Don't bother with lectures, use the textbook.
She really seems clueless sometimes. The accent can be difficult but honestly, even if she had no accent at all what she says still doesn't make sense and is not clear and concise at all. Sometimes the students would even correct errors in her work!!! I got a good mark but that was definitely not because of the lectures!
The accent is awful, it is just painful
avoid at all costs, like fr i wish i dropped this course... hard test questions and little to no support and confusing lectures.
I want to make it clear, this review is not a sour grapes thing. In all honesty, she does NOT know how to teach. It's not even her accent that's bad, it's her coherence and lack of proper explanation for basic problems. I was lucky that this course was easy enough to self-learn everything outside of class. NOT the best experience in first year.
I started going to Prof. Jambuge the first two weeks, and I realized that not only was she just reading straight from the powerpoint with no other input, but I did not understand what she was saying around ~ 90% of the time. Total waste of class time and I self studied the entire course. Horrible experience.
I actually do not understand why she gets so many terrible reviews, yes her accent is hard to understand but it's not impossible. She tries her level best to explain things and is actually very nice when dealing with questions, both from lecture and homework. Overall she's not bad.
Does have a strong accent so sitting close is recommended. Generally friendly if asked for help/advice but there can be communication issues with her sometimes. Lectures were not too valuable but slides + practice questions were helpful if you studied them properly. Not great, but not as bad as people make her out to be.
Learned absolutely nothing from her lectures as all she did was derive useless equations and poorly explain how to solve problems. No one understands anything as the iClicker results are almost always widely distributed and majority don't even get it right. She is clueless when students ask her questions and is also never on piazza.
Honestly one of the worst classes I have ever take. Amali does not seem confident in the material, and if you ask questions she doesn't know how to answer them. She goes through example questions without explaining what she's doing, and if you ask she responds like you should already know and isn't anymore helpful. Her monotone lectures are killer.
Not a great professor, her lectures are difficult to understand. Be ready to teach yourself the whole course.
Honestly, Professor Jambuge was not as terrible as these reviews put her to be. As long as you do the pre reading her lectures are not confusing. She is nice and tries to help her students and never made you feel stupid for asking questions. Only downside is sometimes she did not know how to answer a question from a previous midterm or some sorts.
Amali has an accent but it's not as bad as others say (phi and pi sound the same tho). She gives time in class to do the work and encourages students to participate. She helps if you ask questions after class and tries to explain. She is super understanding and just make sure you understand the lecture material. She's not that bad!
I had an issue with an access code and couldn't login to Master Physics due to an external fault and she did not consider my situation whatsoever and gave me a 0
She's just not great at explaining anything
This prof during the lectures often just reads off the slides, I dont find it useful attending the lectures as all the topics disscused in the lectures you can find from the slides posted on canva. She allows students to participate although always passes the mic to the same two people every lecture. I find myself falling alseep in her lectures.
Nothing to add honestly
Literally so hard to understand what she is saying. Doesn't explain things very clearly and gives little time to do the examples in class, which makes me not want to even bother trying. I genuinely dread going to this class, it's insanely boring, pick any other prof.
Her accent wasn't as difficult to understand as some people here would have you believe but she dragged out simple concepts and made them seem more difficult. Very nice lady any time I interacted with her but not an incredibly effective instructor.
She's hard to understand at first but you get used to it. Except then you realize she can't explain or teach anything. I dreaded coming to these lectures. She's a sweet lady but I just cannot... they are insanely boring. The only reason I actually learned anything in this class was because of the tutorials.
Everytime she explains a concept it just ends up with her rambling on and it's hard to understand what she's saying. She doesn't give us a lot of time to work through examples. Overall though the course is easy to learn on your own so even if she's your professor don't worry too much, just to do homework and you're fine.
Learnt more watching a 30 minute video from another prof then I had in 2 weeks of lecture. Once asked her a question after class and she couldn't understand it.
Absolutely awful!! Cannot overstate that she explains things horribly. She somehow made the easiest physics course at UBC feel impossible. Please do not take if you can choose any other prof!
Absolutely awful prof. I would leave lectures more confused than I entered. She doesn't actually teach, she just solves problems and says "Everyone understand?" (no one did). Please if you see this and you have Jambuge, SWAP NOW I AM WARNING YOU SWAP SWAP SWAP DROP SWAP DROP
She's literally not that bad I am not even Indian all you have to know is that she pronounces kinetic energy as Karnetic enaregy. Relatively easy course explains well.
Amali isn't a devil like everyone else is making her seem. She is very caring and is very helpful during office hours. Her lectures are often rushed and hard to understand, but if you can reach her after class, she does a great job at clarifying any questions. Go to office hours.
She is sometimes difficult to understand due to her accent, and makes lectures somewhat confusing. The concepts weren't too difficult but she complicated them
her slides was very useful, u can get good grades if u just read and understand her slides.
While I loved walking up to the sound of her voice every Monday, Wednesday, and friday, there were more days than not where I could not make out what she was saying due to her accent. I switched to a different professor half way and it made my life so much easier.
Super kind, a very kind soul. When I talked to her after classes she was sweet and helpful. However, her lectures were very hard to understand. She kinda just works through questions without really explaining why things are. I switched professors halfway through the semester and I understood the course much better.
I don't get all the hate/dislike about her, maybe you guys didn't pay attention to the lectures then? I was listening for the most part and her explanations were great and she always walked through the questions step by step. She made this course fun and enjoyable, I was looking forward to each class. If I had advice for this course, pay attention.
To be honest, at first, her accent did make it a little difficult to understand the material. But I liked the way she formatted her slides and the course was pretty manageable overall. I don't think her accent affected my learning in any way after I got used to it.
She was very nice, however, does not know how to explain topics in a way that makes sense. Rambles a lot making it very hard to follow her train of thought when she solves problems. Also, she makes the simplest concepts seem way harder than they actually are. Ended up just learning everything on my own as it was better than going to class.
If you struggle understanding physics you should choose a different professor. She doesn't explain the thought process for questions and it can be difficult to follow when she does the problems. If you're struggling go to the office hours of the other professors that was super helpful for me.
Please avoid her class if you can. Her teaching is just scribbling over the slides and not actually covering important concepts. Her accent is very thick as well and hard to understand. Attendance was mandatory but the lectures were a waste of my time as I didn't learn anything. stick to the textbook and go to other profs office hours.
I don't understand all the negative reviews. Lectures are recorded, and straightforward. All other sections go over the exact same material with VERY similar lecture slides. Yes, she has an accent but it is nothing crazy lol like if you pay attention you will still be able to understand. Physics is not my strong suit, but Professor Ambuge is great
Absolutely terrible. Not even done the course, and her lectures are completely useless. Goes over one example for an easy question, and the rest is up to you to figure out. She goes at such a fast speed I struggle to understand what she's saying, and is somehow still behind on the content of the homework. Take anyone else if you can.
RUN! please save yourself and take someone else's course Im not even finished the course yet but her lectures are so horrible and just confuses me even more. She goes so fast and only covers half of what is in the reading but is somehow behind from the other lectures. Her practice problems are so unclear and she is just so hard to understand.
Explanations can be a bit difficult to follow sometimes but gives great feedback and pointers if you talk to her one-on-one. Overall, her teaching is of lower quality. Often times, my lab partner and I constantly had to ask the TA's for help because she couldn't deliver the required lab material effectively.
I don't understand her. I literally just watch the other prof Reigers lectures cuz I don't get her. I always left lecture more confused than before. As someone who isn't confident in physics, I wouldn't suggest taking her and take someone else. I only went to class for the mandatory attendance. Unless ur a physics genius take someone else.
I honestly don't get why there are a ton of negative reviews for this prof. I think that her lectures are helpful in understanding the course concepts, but make sure you complete the readings before the class. As long as you put in good effort, you will receive a good grade for the class. It is evident that she cares about what she teaches.
Not sure why so many people dislike Amali but I think she did an okay job teaching PHYS100. Explains things clear and accessible outside of class.
While I don't think she deserves so much hate, Professor Jambuge, like most math and physics people, mainly had a hard time breaking things down to make them more digestible. Often she would overcomplicate solutions and make concepts seem harder than they were; just watch YouTube and do the practice work and you should be fine.
She don't deserve all the hate she gets! Just make sure you stay up to date with your work.
to be honest i skipped half the lectures because id just be doing the crossword and doomscrolling anyway but she's nice and actually answers questions on piazza unlike a certain bio prof who shall not be named. also phys 100 is very self-teachable
I took both physics 100 and physics 131 with her and ended both with As despite not really liking physics before these courses. She's genuinely a kind prof and although yes, she does have an accent that is kind of hard to understand at times, her speaking pace is good enough to make up for that.
Other comments may have exaggerated her accent; it was never a problem for me. Definitely heavy lectures but gives ample practice problems to clear concepts up. Kind and approachable. The 3 quizzes + midterm were okay, but the final was much more difficult. Make sure to get high marks on the quizzes + midterm + hw, and you should be getting an A.
yes, her accent is difficult to understand but i feel like people are def exaggerating it a bit. if you truly cared about the course and wanted to do well, you would def be able to review her post lecture slides and follow along. you get used to her accent!
Honestly, I don't believe Dr. Jambuge deserves this rating. Though she does have a thick accent that can be difficult to get used to, as many others have pointed out, her lectures overall are straightforward. She's also very nice and patient during office hours and helped me tremendously in understanding concepts and problem-solving techniques.
Professor Jambuge is a very sweet professor, but unfortunately her lectures are not very helpful in understanding physics. I found her teaching style difficult to understand, as she mostly read off the slides or asked students to answer questions from the slides without explaining the concepts well.
I took PHYS100 + PHYS131 with Amali and she is very kind. Her teaching style is very straightforward as she'll walk you through every problem step by step, no short cuts. Because of this, lectures felt slow at times, but there was rarely any confusion. Amali is a solid prof + her warm smile certainly won't hurt when you're struggling on a question.
Good assignment good. You will have a chunk of 5 hours to do your assignment, good luck!
good prof! difficult class
explained things in lecture well, great for answering questions, and took a slow pace so everything was clear (even if it was pretty boring). definitely does not deserve her current rating, you can understand her accent perfectly fine. only thing is that PHYS 100 second midterm was brutally difficult compared to the first one.
Prof. Jambuge is very caring and genuinely wants us to succeed. She's clearly passionate about what she teaches. The lectures can get a bit boring, but she explains everything slowly and in a way that's easy to understand.
课超级无聊
Her lectures are ok, the class is pretty good. Her accent is not as bad as some people claim, and is understandable. The class remains on schedule and the midterms + final contain expected material.
Not my favourite she is ok and you will be fine if she's your professor because as forementioned she is ok.
very kind professor but i could not learn from her lectures at all. her accent isn't an issue, it's just that she teaches so inefficiently and slow-paced and it didn't work for me. i just mostly did the slides on my own time because it would be so much quicker than the lectures
Really disappointed to see her have a 2.0. Amali was one of my favourite profs first semester, her thermo lectures were consistently good and waves lectures were genuinely phenomenal. She moves slowly for sure but I appreciated the chance to try every problem before hand. Office hours were useful when I attended. She is very kind and understanding.
She is an alright prof, although the lectures are not very engaging.
DO YOUR PRE READINGS ON TIME!! With 3 lectures a week, it is easy to fall behind in this course. Lectures will only be beneficial with some sort of background information on the topics. The prof included occasional demos and many I-clickers.
Lectures were not engaging at all and, at 9am, turned into me catching up on sleep. Just skip the lecture and watch Mark Van Raamsdoonk on Youtube, he has the entire course (35 lectures) on a playlist and is a much better teacher than anything UBC can offer.
