Dr. Durbak is a great professor; you can tell she cares about her students. She puts all her lectures on tegrity and provides practice exams for all the tests. She is very invested in helping students succeed and is constantly asking for feedback on what students don't understand. Tests are completely based off lectures; book only to supplement.
Professor Durbak is such a great professor! You can tell she really cares if you understand the information, and she explains concepts clearly. I'm usually terrible at biology but she helped me understand it!
Tests are only the information from her lectures which she gives before every class-everything posted on tegrity. Need to come to class for clicker questions because they are extra credit. 4 tests and a final, drops the lowest one unless you get an average of 90% then you are exempted from taking the final.
Best teacher I've had so far. Great lectures and clicker questions are extra credit for the final. Responds to emails in less that 24 hours. Very nice woman and great professor.
I skipped so many of her lectures because I couldn't tolerate the way she taught. You have clickers and index card assignments. Attendance is mandatory. You have online work, quizzes, difficult exams with multiple choice/short answer, sometimes essay. Her voice is awful. Her examples are boring. Would not recommend.
Dr. Durbak is a pretty good professor. She is very clear in when she is available for office hours - utilize those and she is always willing to help. Because she posts all of her notes and recorded lectures online, it makes it hard to go to class, but she does give a lot of in-class assignments. She is personable and uses college student humor.
Go to class and participate and you'll receive easy extra credit. There are in class and out of class homework assignments. There is a way to get out of the final so if you study hard and read over notes you can get out of it. All lectures are online.
I have not had a teacher that cared more about her students! The tests are difficult and more conceptual. The book is only useful for the homework, so if you pay attention in class and actually know the material (not memorize!) you will be okay. She is very nice and approachable for help. One downside is lectures are boring.
Tests are harder than they should be but she balances it out with lots of homework and in class assignments.
She uses clickers for bonus points, with a possible 2% grade boost at the end of the semester. There was a decent amount of in-class assignments. She posts her lectures on tegrity, but I suggest going to class. Her slides were very helpful and relevant. She offered great study materials, and one class dedicated to review, for the 4 exams + final.
Dr. Durbak is an awesome and genuine professor, she cares about students more than she should. The class can be difficult at first to get a hang of but if you stick with it good things will happen. The tests are difficult although if you show up to class and complete the homework assigned online you shouldn't fail.
Very easy if you come to class and take notes. Clicker questions in class give you a lot of extra credit at the end of the course, and she makes the lectures interesting so it's worth coming to class. Best part about the class is that she lets you drop the final if you have a 90 avg on all other tests, which was awesome. Def reccomend!
Show up to lectures and there is no way you wont at least get a B-
The tests are hard but she is always available to help.
Taking Cell Bio with Durbak I received my very first C in a Biology course (from previous A's). I had her when it was her first semester teaching, so she was still getting adjusted to the course. Exam short answer questions were unclear. Student gave constructive criticism and exam averages skyrocketed on the last exam
You have to go to class because of her clicker questions. Lectures were seriously boring, and tests were pretty easy if you study. Would not take a class with her again.
Overall, Durbak was a pretty solid cell bio professor. The class material is going to be hard no matter what professor you have, but Durbak's style (while sometimes difficult to earn an A from) really helps you learn the material. You just have to be willing to put in the work! She gives good opportunities for easy points & extra credit, too!
She made the class very entertaining and interesting to learn. Even though it was a 9 am class she always had my attention. It is important to be in class because she has clicker points that give u extra credit and she has in class assignments. Also, if you have an overall A grade in the class you dont have to take the final!
Teaches like a high school teacher but her class is really easy as long as you actually go. She uses clickers all the time and you get extra credit if you get more than 75% right over the whole semester. TONS of in-class assignments and quizzes and homework. Tests aren't too hard if you study
Tons of material on each test. Don't fall behind. Biggest gripe is this is supposed to be cell biology, it's really loaded with Chemistry, with no prerequisite for it. Take it after Chem 2. Clickers are extra credit, but many are application problems with no time to think through. Very unfocused, difficult to know what will be on tests.
I find her class stressful. The lectures are very basic, but her questions on clickers tests and homework are detailed application probs. She gets a lot of her questions from the MCAT test banks and expects you to know all about molecular bonding but never goes over it. Extra credit and in class assignments, so go to class.
Durbak is fine. Her class is not easy, you actually have to work for your grade, but if you put the work in, you'll do fine. Also, her class really helped me in biochem later.
She makes her class way too difficult for what the material is. Her test questions are not straightforward and they are way too in depth. Unfortunately, she is the better option of the cell bio professors
Pretty simple and straightforward class. She tests you based off strictly her lectures. Exams are short, yet she now included 5 exams during the semester instead of 4. She has plenty of extra credit opportunities and drops your worst exam score/hw score. Class was super easy and anyone should be able to get an A if they put in a little effort
Wonderful professor! Really nice and super easy when explaining concepts. If you want an A, you can achieve it, you just have to read the book (buy the physical copy) and show up for lecture. Online quizzes are a pain, but the exams is whats gonna get you that A. And she will drop you from the final if you have 90% exam average.
Durbak makes you work for your grade because all of her exams are not very straightforward. She makes you think and apply your knowledge rather than just memorization. Attendance is not mandatory BUT she does clicker questions almost every class and all in-class assignments are given at random. She made class interesting and was extremely helpful.
Caring & knowledgable professor! You definitely have to work for your grade. There are five exams that are strictly based off of lectures & your ability to apply the information. Exams aren't easy, so be prepared to study A LOT for this class. She offers many extra credit opportunities. Pay attention in class, work hard, and you'll be just fine.
She is a good teacher. you have to study alot. But she wouldnt round my B+ of 89.56 up to an A-
Intimidating at first but really nice if you get to know her. Read the textbook and study if you want to do well on the tests. Lots of quizzes.
This is a great class and I wouldn't have taken it with anyone else. Durbak is very nice and tries to do as much as she can to help you succeed. The optional homework problems she posts are pretty challenging, but if you know how to do those then you will do fine on exams.
Dr. Durbak has been my favorite teacher ever. She is super helpful and willing to take the time to meet with students to make sure you understand the material. Go to her office hours and she'll become your friend. Always says hi to me outside of class a year later too because she got to know me.
Dr. Durbak is passionate about what she teaches, and she tries to make us be passionate as well. Her lectures were always interesting even for someone that is not a huge fan of biology. She's one of the only teachers that I have ever gone to office hours for.
She is super passionate about the class material and is very engaging and easy to listen to! Her lectures are quite entertaining, she always finds ways to offer extra credit, answers emails timely and posts super helpful study guides for the exams! Strongly recommend!
The class is not hard, it is just that I'm personally not a fan of her teaching style. Many lecture notes were incorrect and screwed me up on tests. Speaking of the tests, some of the weirdest worded questions I have ever seen. It's like she's trying to get you to mess up. I thought she was a very nice lady, but I just wasn't a fan of her class.
Cell Biology isn't easy, but she gave lots of ways to earn points that boost your grade. Clicker questions are extra credit, so go to class, reading the assigned text before class and sitting next to smart people helps, because you are allowed to work together. Tough, but doable. Exams were average, except the take-home, which was killer.
She is very lecture heavy and makes Biology way harder than it needs to be. Doesn't ever curve tests and makes her multiple choice exams confusing and easy to get tripped up on. Least favorite class.
She is really helpful outside of class, but during class I found her lectures to be boring and hard to follow. Overall, the tests are hard but if you study a lot it is a manageable class.
Biology 1010 was probably one of the harder classes I took this semester. I tried my best on each exam, but they were extremely hard and the wording was really confusing. The workout problems did not match what I reviewed for and overall just confusing. I thought she was a nice professor, but this class seemed too difficult for a general class.
Really enjoyed her class. I was nervous because I hate science, but she made BIO really easy to understand. The class is very lecture heavy and you need to be there to fully understand, but she does put up panopto videos and lots of extra credit opportunities. I studied by reading the lecture notes and got an A on almost every test. Great teacher!
Made biology super easy to understand and her lectures were engaging. She records attendance but it's easy points to get. Tests were difficult, but as long as you study they're passable. Gives great feedback, gives extra credit opportunities, and is easily accessible.
She was awful. The test were hard and not like the practice exams. She didn't round my 79.5 to an 80.
Lectures are kind of boring and pointless since they're posted on canvas. There was a test every 2 or 3 weeks but little to no homework. It's an easy class as long as you get the credit for showing up and answering polling questions and gloss over the lectures right before the tests.
Please I urge you do NOT take her class . Her exams are hard, discussions are pointless . Her review sessions are pointless . She makes EVERYTHING hard for no reason . We are in a pandemic and she still is grading hard and giving out 0 if you do the hw wrong. She is not lient nor caring . REGRET TAKING HER CLASS I SWEAR TO GOD I DO .
There is a lot of content to cover but she is very good at teaching as long as you are willing to pay attention to lectures. She recommends doing textbook readings but you can get all the info you need for her exams from lectures. Exams aren't too bad and are more application based. She also gives a lot of opportunities to boost your grade.
Durbak is fine. She doesn't give out a lot of homework, and the class is easy. But, she puts some questions on the exams that weren't discussed and has pointless Zoom sessions for review. Isn't incredibly helpful when you ask her questions. You'll be fine if you can learn on your own, but if you need any help, the internet will do a better job.
One of the most frustrating classes I have ever taken. The content explained during the lectures is not difficult, yet the exams are. The questions asked on the exams do not correlate to the lectures and have multiple right answers. She will put a question on the homework and then ask the same question on the test with a different answer.
I had Biology with Dr. Durbak. She has an attendance policy for about half of the lectures, so if you go to half you'll get full credit. Homework and tests could be a little tricky, but for the most part, they're not too bad. Don't expect to do well if you don't try. My test scores definitely reflected when I paid attention and didn't.
Very nice and understand but the tests are very hard. The information on the tests is not mentioned in the lectures. However, homework assignments and quizzes are fairly easy because you get multiple chances on each. She also does a lot of extra credit. Pretty work heavy, but it helps you learn the material.
Dr. Durbak is a really amazing professor. I never felt like I was lost in her class. It is very structured and easy to follow. She really helps you when you need it. There are plenty of options for extra credit too! Dr. Durbak truly wants you to succeed and she makes that very clear in the way she treats the students!
Dr. Durbak was great! Yeah it was a challenging class, but I really felt supported in the class and she was always accessible. She had reviews for tests outside of class and was always helpful. I felt like the class was straight-forward and the material followed what we were tested over. P.S. she has a gel electrophoresis dress. A true Ms. Frizzle.
No homework which is a good and bad thing. Difficult and very specific material. Does give extra credit. Fun to listen to, but lectures do not align with exams. You have to work for your grade and teach yourself outside of her notes. Nice woman, tries her hardest but it is just hard material to teach. wish tests weren't so hard and matched lecture
Dr. Durbak is so caring and loves her subject! Notes are easy to follow and a textbook is required, but I never needed to use it. Tests are pretty easy and open-note. There is homework but it's very easy, along with plenty of extra credit opportunities. I've always struggled with science, but I understand it in this class!
Dr. Durbak was an awesome teacher! Made things funny and I love Woohoo Wednesday! Exams are open note but make sure you study too because they can be a little tricky! Very approachable and caring! Love her
lots of pointless busy work. is not very sympathetic as well.
She was such a nice professor! I ended up with a B+. I never went to class, all tests were online and she dropped the lowest one. She was always very understanding. I would take a class with her again!
I liked her teaching style it was a flipped classroom. Plenty of in class activities to make sure you understand. Lots of opportunity to get extra credit. iclicker is for attendance. Tests were pretty easy as long as you study and they aren't worth an absurd amount of your grade. There are a lot more points to earn that aren't tests.
Just is a weird teaching method. I basically had to teach myself with notes outside of class, so going to discussion felt unnecessary.
I love Dr. Durbak! She is funny and passionate for what she teaches. The lectures are flipped-classroom style, so there are videos to watch before class and the material is discussed & clarified in class. If you love memes, Dr. Durbak's class is for you! The honors component of this class wasn't too bad either- just a paper and group presentation.
Really easy class. Only have to attend 21/33 classes before iClicker starts dropping your grade. Skipped 12 classes and got an A+. She does a flipped classroom but I never watched the videos before. By far the easiest bio 1010 teacher.
Dr. Durbak was a really easy professor for me. She was nice, and the grading was precise and clear. Lots of exams. You only have to go to 21/33 classes to get your attendance grade. Super easy
Prof. Durbak's lectures were very interactive with iclickers and participation does receive a grade, but you can miss a few classes. she offers a lot of bonus opportunities which is nice because her exams are hard! She did let us make a notecard for the exam which was super nice but the exams were still hard.
Biochem majors will have an easy time, but others might not. Some questions can be worded a little strangely IMO, so be careful. Uses iClicker, but has a generous attendance policy. Watch the lectures before you take the quizzes, not all the info is on the slides so you can't cheese them. Flipped classroom format isn't for everyone, so be warned.
Flipped classroom style, the things we need to learn at home aren't posted until 12 pm/right before class starts. Not told what we're supposed to be learning on our own, it's not very clear online. Uses iClicker so attendance is important. Uses jeopardy iClicker game the class before an exam but the questions aren't really based on what we learn.
Very good professor. Made content clear for everyone and did not expect too much from us. Actually cared about us and was understanding when things would come up. Would definitely take this class again!
Very energetic professor, and you can tell that she loves what she teaches! I wasn't a fan of her teaching style. Uses iClicker for attendance and it isn't graded. You have the same group the whole semester, and there's lots of group projects/days. Workload got heavy and exams could be difficult at times but overall it was a pretty average class.
She's not as nice during office hours. She got angry at my friend for missing class for health reasons even though she lets you have 12 drop days. But, she's entertaining during lecture. Likes to hush people talking in the back so beware. The group projects are easy but obnoxious we're still doing them in college. Lab doesn't 100% match.
Professor Durbak is a good teacher. She cares about her subject which helps a lot. It is definitely an intro course. Super easy if you do all of the assignments. You get plenty of skip days and some extra credit opportunities. Lots of group work. Easy A.
There are ample opportunities for extra credit (can raise grade ~2%) and discussion points are easy to get if you pay attention in class and show up. Lenient attendance policy and you get a notecard to use during the exam. Love the memes and iClicker to reinforce concepts.
Probably the most understanding and caring professor I've had at Mizzou-- Dr. Durbak really values her students' learning and wellbeing. The tests aren't hard in my opinion, especially because she allots a notecard. She also allows one dropped exam and 11 absences. Very fair class and she is a great teacher.
Only annoying thing about the class is that you're asked to watch at-home lectures, but then go over the same content the next class. It does force you to understand it though! Durbak is friendly and accessible in office hours. Tests are straightforward and you're allowed a notecard. Overall, great course!
I loved Dr. Durbak's cell bio. Her lectures were so interesting and she related everything to real-world applications. Tests were pretty difficult, but with studying and a test notecard, it was very doable. There are a lot of possible points from discussion and ICA. I wish she taught more classes! You could tell she cared for all her students.
Amazing teacher. Loved going to her lectures and you get a dropped exam so a little less stress.
Not the worst but would avoid. She's demeaning and will treat you and your ability to be an autonomous learner like they're mythical cryptids--never to be seen. She has no outside resources, just her and her lectures, which can be self-contradicting and unhelpful at best. If you have a solid biology background, you'll be okay. Just annoyed.
She truly cares and could easily gotten an A if effort put in.
Dr. Durbak was a great Extended One Read professor! I believe it was her first time teaching this class, but you couldn't tell. She allowed for great comprehension of the book and used her biology background to bring in an alternative perspective. She was very caring and understanding about late work due to illness. Overall 10/10 professor
She is a passionate professor who deeply cares about her subject, but she does not consider the needs and recommendations of students with disabilities.
Dr. Durbak is incredibly passionate about biology, and it shows. She is a very animated lecturer who honestly reminds me of Mrs. Frizzle. Her cell bio class is fun, and I learned a lot. If you're just trying to get that Pre-med requirement, don't worry, the exams are easy, and there is extra credit galore. Remember to be respectful to educators!
If you aren't religious, pick a religion and pray.
Dr. Durbak is one of the sweetest professors you will ever have. She really wants everyone in the class to succeed. Her tests are pretty easy if you study and if you put in effort you will learn a lot. For honors, she does a big group project at the end instead of finals which was really fun. Much rather do this instead of a big final
Dr Durbak is my favorite professor she is so awesome I look for classes she is teaching just so I can take them
Dr Durbak is an excellent professor. She goes over the material well, but you do need to do the at-home videos so you know what is going on. There is a group project and a case study in every unit. She lets you bring a note card to tests. She drops your lowest test score and hw. She sets her class up in a way that makes it hard to fail.
I love this professor!! You definitely will need to study for the tests but she gives you a practice exam and study guide that will help you a lot. You also can use a cheat sheet on the test! So much extra credit given too. You can also drop a test at the end of semester, so you can skip the final and just drop that.
Super nice and cares about her students. Really helpful video lectures. Interesting lectures, and she's passionate about what she teaches. The tests and assignments are easy too if you just pay attention and take notes in class.
Flipped classroom style you have to watch videos online to be somewhat informed on what you're learning.
Durbak was a great professor. Not too much homework, not a really tough grader for projects as long as you did what you were told. Attendance wasn't really mandatory but we had to come to class 9 times throughout the semester. Practice exams were just like the real ones, and in the videos (and class) she did a great of job of explaining material.
