Harris is the worse thing to happen to me since being at VCU. She comes across as sweet and helpful so I stayed in her class. DONT BE FOOLED LIKE I WAS. The class average for tests were in the 40s. TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE. Lecture doesn't help with homework, homework doesn't help with hard free response weekly quizzes. Take anyone else. AVOID
Not sure what is going on with the other two reviews. Her tests were really hard but the averages were much higher than what the first reviewer said and I think we must have been in the same class. Lecture was okay. She is willing to help students outside of class and seems to care that students learn. Hard class but I would take her again.
Amanda Harris had provided numerous tools such as online practice problems where she dedicates a channel on problems. She is always there for office hours and online office hours too. Easily through when explaining as long as you try to read some of it before hand. Her tests are tough but she provides the resources to do well on them.
Dr. Harris gives clear lectures, and gives good examples that make learning the material easier. She will readily answer questions by Blackboard, email, and office hours. Her tests are a little lengthy, but can be completed if you know the material. She certainly seems passionate about analytical chemistry.
She's a really good teacher but she talks fast, but that can be overcome by just asking questions. Try to get a good TA for recitation because they will teach and reinforce the information outside of lecture.
Dr. Harris has this amazing skill where she takes the easiest concepts and twists them to make them very hard to understand. She has useless powerpoints that she doesn't even follow. Her classes don't make sense; the way she tried to teach VESPER was through a styrofoam ball and christmas pencils. TL;DR: DON'T TAKE HER CLASS.
Dr. Harris definitely knows what she is talking about and could potentially be a great mentor if you are looking to be in the chemistry field of things. She follows her powerpoints well but you NEED to understand what she is talking about in class. She uses a lot of examples and worksheets to help teach. If you want to pass be sure to practice!!!!!
Shes a a good teacher, she definitely knows her stuff. But her tests are HORRIBLE. She will give you a 50 minute tests, with very thought heavy questions. I NEVER finished her tests. Not ONCE. And no one I knew or heard talking about her ever finished their tests. I would literally get all correct and have to guess on the remaining half of the test
She is very dedicated. Questions in class are moderate hardness and allows us enough time to work it. Homework is not hard. She is will go over what you didn't get after class. Gives a whole extra class on that goes over important topics (extra). Super available for office hours. I hated chemistry, worked hard and got a 95.40 on the ACS with her.
She is extremely passionate and willing to work with you. The tests are not that hard conceptually, but make sure you are good with time management. Tests have a lot of questions that need to be done in a short amount of time. Be very specific with short answer questions (units, sig figs, etc.). Utilize the SI sessions!!!
Wonderful professor, and she rounds grades at the very end.
Dr. Harris is amazing at explaining and teaching. She makes herself available even outside her office hours and she even has a Friday workshop where she goes over material again. She is truly an amazing professor but you must put time into the class. You must go to her for help and study on your own. I spent a lot of time studying and got a B+.
This is a difficult course hands down. I first took it with Dhakal and that was a huge mistake. Retook it with Harris and she's honestly a great instructor. She works through problems in class and has clicker questions so make sure you attend lecture. She's very enthusiastic about the material and always makes herself to available to help you out
She is an excellent teacher Chem at VCU and I would recommend her for anybody. Her tests are basically the worksheets, homework and quizzes combined and if you prepare for the test it wont be hard. If your having trouble she has a whole extra class dedicated to just help.
One of my favorite professors of all time! Incredibly accessible and cares about her students. Her quizzes and tests are tough but if you go and talk to her she'll explain any confusion. Definitely need to attend class and pay attention. Would absolutely take again.
Solid lecturer. She is very helpful when you visit her office hours/email her questions. Overall, she doesn't have many weaknesses as a professor, other than the fact her classes are inherently very difficult.
Never had anyone so consistent on dates things were due and what was expected. Except for the very end, where schedules usually get a little messy, everything is due on the same day of the week. Tests were difficult, but that's to be expected from the material. Weekly quizzes + homeworks. 10/10 lecturer; would take again.
Had her for Chem 102 lab during the summer. Her tests are much harder than most professors, and in my opinion, even harder than ACS questions. The examples she does in lecture are much easier than the ones that show up on tests, so unless you're naturally good at chemistry, they can be difficult.
Dr. Harris a wonderful lady that is willing to help you outside of class. She will email you back, make time at her office, and gives plenty of resources to pass the class. There is homework for every chapter, but it's not that difficult. She does give quizzes and tests, but if you try, you will be fine. She teaches very well.
Mrs. Harris was a great professor. Her lectures are very clear and understandable. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Harris clearly knows what she's talking about and she's very helpful in lecture if anyone has questions. However, her tests are insanely hard and nearly impossible to pass. Her class is much harder compared to the other CHEM 101 professors but definitely does not prepare you as well for the ACS final exam.
Chemistry is not my best subject by any means, so I was very nervous about taking this course. I definitely had to work for my grade. Professor Harris has pretty great lectures and does a good job of answering everyone's questions during class time or her office hours.
Dr. Harris is super smart when it comes to Chemistry. Her lectures arent too bad and she will answer any questions you have. Although, her tests are super hard which is pretty much all of your grade. Its been a struggle all semester to get my test average up and this class is definitely going to lower my GPA. Chem 101 is not good for her.
You don't really *need* the textbook, just show up to class. She's an alright teacher. The biggest gripe I had was with tests - they asked a lot of conceptual questions that people don't usually review for. But for applications questions/using formulas she goes over many examples so that shouldn't be a problem. Learn the chemistry! Don't memorize.
Dr. Harris is extremely passionate about chemistry and she shows it in her lectures. If you don't have time to come to lecture, I wouldn't bother taking her course. You miss one lecture and you fall behind. Sadly, her tests are extremely more difficult than her quizzes and her tests are worth much more. Utilizing her office hours are helpful.
Her lectures are amazing because she really ensures everyone understands before moving on. Tophat used for attendance which can affect your grade. Her exams are really hard, but I feel like if I had read the book and did extra practice problems I would've gotten a better grade. Gives a lot of quizzes instead of practice during recitation.
Dr. Harris is the best chemistry teacher that I have ever had. She breaks down the materials in ways that students can actually understand and gives very detailed lectures that corresponds to her quizzes and exams. Her tests are the main component of her grading, but she has other activities that can help improve your grade including the ACS.
Dr. Harris is a very kind and caring professor! This class is definitely doable as I thought her lectures were good, the quizzes were for the most part easy, and the homework had unlimited tries. My only downfall to me was that the test FRQs were much more difficult than expected, but I think it wouldve been fine if I had studied a lot more!
Dr. Harris is the best chemistry professor. She is the only professor at VCU who is willing to bounce around a large lecture hall to give students individual help. Her power points are posted online, straightforwards, and easy to understand. She is also amazing at lecturing. Tests are definitely challenging, but it's worth it. I got A on ACS exam
Hands down the best chemistry professor. She is kind and takes the time to explain material in great depth and gives plenty of practice. Her tests are pretty difficult but don't let that scare you. She prepares you well for them and for the ACS as well. This class is definitely worth it and will help you have a stronger foundation in chemistry.
I feel 50/50 towards her. Lectures are amazing but she goes thru them really fast, tests are somewhat hard imo for no reason. Got a B on every one of her tests, ended up getting a 97% on the ACS so I got an A. She does make you work for the grade and you get a lot of knowledge, but its still hard. Don't buy the textbook btw waste of $$
Dr. Harris is a great teacher and definitely provides as much help as possible to help her students pass with that being said her tests are really hard. I studied really hard did everything in my power to pass but still ended up failing so I had to withdraw, I guess it just depends if you are good at chemistry or not.
I have always hated chemistry but Dr. Harris is one of the most helpful professors out there. She was always willing to walk me through a problem and really cares. I would recommend her again and again.
Dr. Harris is the best chem professor I've had. I'm not a Chem person at all, but I managed to get a B despite having a medical emergency during the semester. Dr. Harris assigned a reasonable amount of homework that prepared us for exams, and was very accommodating when students had issues. Her lectures were good and she explains chem so well.
Dr. Harris makes it clear that in order to do well in the class, it's important that you put in the work. With that being said, she explains things in a way that makes sense and answers any questions. she's really nice and it's obvious she enjoys teaching.
Amanda Harris is a good chemistry professor in my opinion, but the lectures were more like instructions then teaching sessions. It was almost as if she was giving straight instructions to solve a specific problem, but I never was really able to fully learn how to. Her tests and quizzes are very difficult.
This class is hard in general but it's even harder if you take it with Harris. Her class is very fast-paced and lecture heavy. Quizzes are hard and you only get 30 minutes and 1 attempt to take them except for the final review quiz. Homework isn't that bad. Tests are hard! Study the quizzes, they may help.
Harris isn't a bad choice for General Chemistry 2. She is a good lecturer, but her tests/quizzes can be difficult and confusing at times. You definitely have to work very hard in this class and understand concepts throughly. However, this holds true in any Gen Chem 2 class. She will teach you well, but you have to put in a lot of work for an A.
I absolutely loved having Dr. Harris as my chem professor this semester. Her tests are difficult, but she is available for office hours and has helpful Friday workshops. She is very friendly and wants to see you succeed in the class. Definitely do all the homework and go to as many Friday workshops as possible, and you will do well !
Dr. Harris is an amazing professor who truly cares about her students. There are tons of opportunities for help. Homework is Mastering Chemistry, but she gives unlimited attempts with no incorrect penalties. TopHat is used for in class participation. Very clear on information and what will be on the test and very funny.
Class was definitely hard but Dr. Harris makes it manageable. Staying on top of the work helps when it comes time to study for tests, and Dr. Harris is super helpful if you are stuck on any concept. Great Professor!
Dr. Harris is a great professor, I definitely would recommend meeting with her one on one outside of class as she is a really nice person. Her class is no walk in the park and has a lot of math involved (algebra specifically), and she will definitely answer all questions asked. I definitely recommend taking her.
I like her lectures videos and the questions since they can help you understand the material. You can email her and she'll respond to your questions about class quickly. I always go to her office hours and I feel like watching her go through the questions is really helpful and she repeats herself if you need to hear it again.
Dr. Harris is an amazing professor. I skipped chem 101 and went straight to 102 and although Dr. Harris's lectures are videos, they are very detailed and she works at a pace that is understandable. She also responds to questions very fast! Remember to practice your questions and you should pass the class pretty easily!
Honestly, this class has been an awful experience for me. Without a doubt she is very smart and has a passion for chemistry... however she lets her knowledge get in the way and expects WAY to much. I have never rated a professor but I had to because I'd want someone to warn be as well. Overall I don't think she's adjusted well to online teaching.
I put my all into this class and had to withdraw. Shes a nice person her class is just really difficult. I think she just didnt transition well into online. She doesnt offer any study guides and her lecture videos were around 40 plus minutes each time. Test are extremely difficult too. I wouldnt take this class with her virtually.
If you are not a chemistry major/do not have to take harder chemistry classes in the future, I would recommend a different professor. However, she is great for preparing students for Organic Chemistry or other advanced chemistry classes and will make you work for it. Definitely recommend working practice problems for exams.
Because of AP Chem I never watched a lecture. By time I needed to watch the lectures, I wasn't up for it but luckily the lowest test grade was dropped. Do the homework early because it's Pearson it's from a pool of questions. Her responses to questions were helpful.
One of the best chem profs at vcu! Had her for chem 102 and 309 and only good things to say about her. her lectures are easy to follow, there is hw and lecture questions but they are so useful. There are quizzes. And tests, theyre hard but if you study you'll do great. also very easy to contact outside of class and you can tell she loves to teach.
The discussion board to ask questions for homework problems is so useful. However, I never felt like I truly understood what was happening in the lecture questions. She responses in a timely manner. You will not have enough time for tests so just do what you know and hope for the best. Study her in class examples more than the homework.
Don't take quant unless it's with Dr. Harris I swear. There is not a single mean bone in her body and if you're honest with her she will do her best to help you succeed. she ANNOTATES HER SLIDES which is perfect, and if you do her lecture questions and homework questions you're set for the tests. So kind and caring, one of my fav profs at vcu.
She talks about how the do-able quizzes in class are nothing like the test... yea the tests are the absolute hardest! Our whole class got below 50s and she blames it on us? You can't give extremely hard tests and not give your students the same appropriate difficulty taught during class. Her recommendation was to withdraw lol thanks.
Unless you're a chem major, avoid her class. She is kind, willing to answer questions, and available outside of class-but this doesn't make up for the impossible tests, fast paced lectures, and limited time for said tests. You could spend 30+ hours a week studying and still get a C or even fail. Here's your takeaway: kind woman, class from hell.
Dr. Harris is the best professor I've taken in my 2 years of college. She is the most knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry, she is super willing to help out and offers easy classwork points just by showing up. As long as you pay attention, you will pass
Dr. Harris is extremely accessible outside of class and always willing to answer questions. There are many assignments (TopHat, homework, quizzes, tests, ACS final). Tests require you to know your stuff but are very fair. There are many resources to help posted on Canvas. The SI for this class was super helpful too.
I had Dr. Harris for 102 and 309. She is a wonderful and caring professor. We get in class practice problems which she helps us through. Her exams are challenging, but they are very doable if you study and attend her office hours.
Dont take her unless u want to fail, Her tests are very very hard, and she does this thing called no backtracking which means when u move on from Q 1 to Q2 u cant go back to Q1. Very harsh grader and her daily quizzes has errors that she never fixes. For example shell say 1+1 2.00 and if u enter 2 its incorrect
one of the worst classes i have ever taken, the prof is extremely inconsiderate she does not care about her students. would never ever recommend this class, unless you are setting for failure. she explains things in fast paced and her tests are even worse, they are very challenging and are given in short amount of time, hands down worst prof ever
Her lectures are long and some of them arent well explained so I felt helpless when I came across that topic on a test. Failed the first 2 tests, I had to spend multiple days studying in order to get decent scores on the next tests. Recitations and HW arent helpful at all either, youll spend a lot of time on them and theyre worth little to nothing
about 1 quiz each week that you take at home and 3 exams and final and homework. lowest 2 quizzes get dropped and final replaces lowest exam and lowest hw gets dropped. its a hard class but go to SI and her office hours and she is an amazing and passionate professor
This professor is very helpful. She lets you ask questions and does not give much homework. She understands people have other classes and that things come up. Her test are not that hard if you just pay attention during the lectures. Overall, an amazing teacher and a great class.
Very organized. Tests are fair, and easy enough if you go to lecture. Lots of opportunities for office hours. Super nice, understanding, and wants all of her students to do their best. Clearly passionate about teaching. Loved her!
Great professor for CHEM309. Lecture heavy and goes thru slides quickly. Accessible outside of class and tries to get to know everybody in the class. Multiple choice quizzes about once a week given on Canvas and aren't terrible if you've been following along and doing the online homework. 4 tests given and she drops 1 and she is a fair grader.
Amazing prof for a tough class! Get ready to pay close attention in lecture and ask questions when you're confused. The HW is harder than the tests or quizzes but prepares you well. Tests are graded very fairly partial credit on the free response. She has several office hours times throughout the week, these are very helpful if you're struggling.
Dr Harris is a sweet lady who just teaches a hard class. If you aren't a bio or chem major don't take her take Moussa if you just want a grade to get the credit but if you want to actually learn every single detail of every single topic take Harris I might fail the class but she is nice and is always ready for questions.
80% of your grade are the tests. Dr. Harris is sweet, understanding, & answers questions thoroughly, but she teaches a difficult class. Don't blame her for the weight of the tests, that's the chem department's fault, not hers. She's available a lot & there are SI leaders. Go to tutoring & DO NOT fall behind, good luck!
She is incredible. Fabulous professor, teaches extremely well, but this class is VERY HARD. You can get an A, absolutely, but you have to WORK for it. Requires lots of time and studying, but constant participation, attendance and daily work will earn you an A. She offers students hours and workshops; very available to get help
Dr Harris is a wonderful lady, she really loves her job and chemistry and you can see that in her teaching. I saw that as a good and bad thing because she is always willing to give you advice on how to do better in the class and because with her being so passionate about chemistry, she talks very fast. The class is hard but she is the one to pick.
One of the best professors I've ever had - her teaching helped me truly understand chemistry. While the class is 80% tests, it is very feasible to do well in class if you pay attention, attend recitation, practice problems in the textbook, and visit her outside of class for any questions. Her dedication to chemistry is very admirable.
Professor Harris was probably my favorite Chemistry professor. She taught in a way that made topics way easier to understand. Make sure to do all the homework and extra credit quizzes as these will help you see the types of questions on tests. Professor Harris also helps out a lot at office hours and with SI Marathons before tests. Take notes!
Amazing professor! Great at explaining things, very helpful, and genuinely wants her students to succeed. Go to her office hours or Friday Workshop if you don't understand something, it really helps! Her class is heavy on homework and her tests are difficult, but it's manageable if you practice and put the effort in.
Good teacher and person. Tests are a tricky and require you to fully understand the material. Would recommend doing lots of practice problems and attending SI. Did bad on first test but made a comeback for other two. Office hours if you can't understand it yourself. For tests, I'd recommend doing the short answer first, then MC due to time.
Class is hard, do well on the tests, they hold the most weight on grade. Need at least 88 test average to end with A. I think that's why, people struggle in this class. Good teacher and nice person her tests are just challenging but sometimes gives extra credit, no curve. Top Hat in class questions count for a grade (should be present to do them)
Dr. Harris is super sweet and nice! However, I found her class to be very difficult. I found her slides to be very confusing, so if you don't attend a class you're basically screwed. Her tests were also very difficult, but prepared you well for the ACS exam at the end of the semester. I love chemistry but struggled in her class.
I took her class twice, failed the first time w/a D, and passed the second w/a A+. She is a GREAT professor and gets through all the material needed for the ACS, but that also means A LOT of material is covered at a fast pace. If you want an easy A don't take this class, if you want a good chem102 understanding take it and put in the work.
I took Professor Harris for the chem 309 lab. She is excellent at explaining topics and offers clear grading criteria. She has plenty of scheduled office hours and is willing to make time for students if you can't make it to one of her office hours. She explains things without giving you the answer and takes her time. Truly caring. 10/10.
chemistry queen. very good lectures and puts a lot of effort in making sure everyone gets what shes talkin about. warning though her tests can be hard HOWEVER they are nearly identical to the questions she gives you during recitation. also she does graded classwork so even though attendance isnt mandatory you should still plan to show up to lecture
Dr.Harris is super nice and very good at explaining stuff, but the tests are really hard imo. It honestly feels like the test is to long for how much time is given (65 mins) it feels like 20 minutes. Also she doesn't really give a test review and usually I wouldn't care but because of how hard the tests are I wish she did.
Grade: 80% Tests (3 tests (65 mins (15MCQ/2FRQ)) and 1 final exam (170 mins(70MCQ)); each is 20%; final exam replaces test grade), 10% HW, 10% TopHat. Dense, fast-paced lectures, but will prepare you for ACS and MCAT; Manageable A (took AP Chem 2 years ago, got a 3); put in the work, be good at taking tests, and grade and knowledge will reflect.
60% of your grade is based on 3 tests, so reviewing beforehand is super important. I spent a solid 10+ hours of review per exam and the majority of fall break reviewing for the final, which got me a 98 in the class. I also recommend going to her workshop and office hours. There's usually only a few people there, even right before the final. 9/10
*CHEZ309* Such an amazing and sweet professor. Post-lab can be very difficult and confusing, and some TAs grade harder than others. However, she is so willing to help you work out your post-lab step by step during her office hours. She has a lot of students so it can get crowded, but she is also very willing to meet with you 1 on 1. Love her!!!!!!!
Dr. Harris cares about getting to know her students! She's great at teaching and goes over practice problems in class. Her tests are hard (~63% class average) and the final is the ACS. A good % of the grade is hw, attendence, and open-note at-home quizzes. This class will be hard if you struggle with math/ dimensional analysis.
Dr. Harris is a very nice person, going to her office hours for both the lecture and the lab are very helpful. However, the lecture material is a lot, and I felt like the test questions were more difficult than the HW or quizzes. The ACS exam is not that bad though, and she drops your lowest quiz/HW grades which is nice.
Dr. Harris is extremely intelligent and you can tell she is passionate about what she is teaching. I took her for gen chem and quantitative chemistry - CHEM313 is NOT for the weak. You have to go to class for the attendance points but more importantly she doesn't post helpful notes so you MUST take notes in class. Her exams are all based on lecture
