Ms. Harrison is the most amazing Professor. I encourage all to take this class.
Amanda is amazing. You only have to write 3 essays...kinda hard but she is always willing to help. If you are not a hard worker and like to ditch... this class is not for you. There is a lot of work in this class, but I feel it will benefit in the long run.
This teacher is really nice and and she brought us donuts one time. She gives little essay exercises which then lead to a bigger essay. She gives time to do your outline, then draft then your essay. We read really interesting books in this class. LOVED HER!! No tests, only a few quizzes on readings. AMAZING TEACHER.
Professor Harrison is absolutely amazing. Her class might be a little challenging but her instructions and the way she guides you through the whole process makes things easy and simple. She gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities as well. However, attendance IS mandatory and she will PUBLICLY bag on you if you miss a class. Easy A if you try.
HARD,... but oh so very helpful and nice. Hunger Games... ever heard of it? :p We had the privilege of reading the book for a project before it was a movie, but she mighta stopped since ppl could just see the movie. :P Hard essay grader but revisions giv you x-credit. Very modern topics and books. Best and most challenging English teacher ever had.
Her class is a challenge. She is very helpful and nice. she is hard grader but fair "you will get what you deserve" Attendance is mandatory because you will lose points if you are absent without excuse. If you give her class and the assignments time, you will get an A.
SHE IS THE WORST! she doesnt respect your efforts !
This Prof. fits only for nerds! Even though she is so clear and her method is advanced and u will learn a lot, but she is a hard grader, doesn't respect your efforts(if u r 2 minutes late of submitting a HW, u will get ZERO!) and she will make your semester miserable. I DON'T RECOMMEND HER AT ALL!!!
Harrison is amazing. The work load is a little tough but her class is worth it. She's extremely thorough with her explanations and she's always willing to help. I absolutely love being in her class.
Professor is very clear on her expectations. I really enjoyed the class. There were quizzes on the reading week after reading was due. At the end of the semester it felt like a lot of material was due because of the research paper and proposition plus presentations. Don't procrastinate because you'll truly feel the pressure at the end.
Passionate about teaching her class. May call out and speak a bit sarcastically towards students who dont pay attention while she is giving instructions, but overall fun and funny. If you like to work hard I would recommend her.
First off, she's not an easy professor, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take her. She's extremely helpful, and challenges you with your writing. I loved this class. I took the friday class, every week something was due. Pay attention, ask for help. Plenty of extra credit opportunities [: Would definitely recommend her class.
Professor Harrison is one of the best professors I have had at CSUN. She is VERY helpful and expects the most out of every student. Attendance is mandatory but you will enjoy her class! Professor Harrison is very knowledge and is passionate about teaching.
She is an amazing professor! The assignments are challenging but realistic. She will revise your paper line by line if you email it to her in advance. She is very knowledgable about the resources that are available to students and will make sure that you have access to them. And she's just a really cool person overall
She is a well organized teacher, emails her students to keep them posted about assignments. The work load can be pretty heavy sometimes but I think that is just the course itself. She is super sweet but don't be late for her class. That will get you on her bad side. Overall easy A
She isn't a very nice person, and is an extremely tough grader. If you get on her good side, then this class should be no problem. Don't take her class to early in the morning cause she if very very loud.
This course is challenging because a lot is expected. However, Professor Harrison is wonderful! She is passionate about this course and goes out of her way to help you if you ask for it. She gives you plenty of opportunities to do well and anyone who complains is just looking for an easy way out. If you work hard you will receive an A from her!
Here's the deal with Professor Harrison. Yes, she's passionate about her subject and can be very helpful. However if you are late or she doesn't like you, watch out because then this will be the longest semester in the world. The work load can be tough so make sure you can handle it. If you can stay on her good side, I recommend the class.
Very strict teacher. Won't take late work or any excuses. You will learn a lot but only if you work hard as hell. Oh, and NEVER EVER BE LATE!!!!!!!!
Seems like some of Prof Harrison's pet peeves include being late to class, being late to class and then making a rude entrance; being late to class, making a rude entrance and then being rude back to her later when she calls you out on being late. I've witnessed some amazingly uncomfortable interactions as a result of a student being late to class.
Ms. Harrison does not actually teach, but instead will assign project after project that she will grade with no respect for the hours of effort spent. One would think a teacher's goal would be to NOT discourage his or her students from trying. The closest she comes to teaching is reading the instructions already posted online. Avoid at all costs.
Prof. Harrison is tough, but if you really work hard in her class you will come out of it a better student. She's always willing to help and revise your papers. Usually through email, her feedback and suggestions really help. Three papers, one midterm, and a final.
The worst teacher ever, never encountered such a bad situation like this with any professors. For me personally I guess she had issues with me and everytime I email her she complains as if I am supposed to go ask for help from another professor. I would say go take another 306 t professor. Also, I ask her about my grade and she gets upset about it
If you are looking for a teacher who will help you to improve on your writing skills, then Professor Harrison is the teacher to take. I learned more about analyzing and annotating a text in this one class than I have learned in ALL of my prior college level writing courses.
This class was tough. There were papers due every 2 weeks. At first it was easy because memos were short, but towards the end you have to incorporate sustainability into everything. One huge 2,500+ word proposal at the end. Professor Harrison was very helpful about it and was clear about what she wanted.
Professor is actually really cool but she's heartless and she doesn't actually teach class, for the last 10 weeks we've had nothing but group projects as well as reading several books that we never finished. Honestly, I've learned more from my peers than her but to top it off she treats the class like it's one of her MA business classes she teaches
Took this class as a hybrid class, so I had class once a week and homework was due every Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday at 12:30pm NO EXCEPTIONS. She is VERY strict with grading and with attendance. She expects you to do and have everything prepared before class. Doesn't teach a single thing! All of the class is group work with long/lots of papers!
I took the online class last year. She is very clear about what she expects from you and vice versa. No surprises but you have to work hard to get an A. I learned so much from her class and she's always helpful with any struggles you have in class. I enjoyed working hard because it proved that I can be a better writer. She's passionate!
Amanda Harrison is an amazing professor who will prepare you for for the years to come. I would definitely not hesitate to enroll into a class with her. Make sure you are mentally and physically prepared to work often in groups because it is a big part of your grade!
Took her online class and even though we had a lot of assignments due weekly, you learn a lot. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
I regret taking this class online. If you can take her in class, do that instead. As a prof. she gives a lot of feedback and is really clear with the work. Online was really difficult to get a good grade in.
Serious teacher, yet fun. Very avid for group work and collaboration. Just do the work and do it well.
The class isn't too hard but under no circumstances should you ask her for an extension or to accept late work.
Does not teach and does not explain anything about the theories in the readings to the class. Involves a lot of reading, 4 papers, 1 group project, and weekly discussion posts. Do not take as an online class.
Students teach the first half each class session in randomly assigned discussion teams. Midterm made up of 3 short essays, and final was a longer essay (2,000+ words) and a final team presentation. Has a bit of an attitude, can be rude and difficult to communicate with. Knows her subjects, but not very good as a teacher. Take at your own risk.
Not easy class, tough grader. hard to get an A
This class is for students who really want to learn! There is consistent assignments and many workshops. She offers a lot of extra credit and it could be beneficial for your grade and for a good experience! I would recommend this class for the people who want to improve their business writing skills. The professor is very helpful as well.
Hilarious professor. She is honestly the best and I learned a lot from taking her.
T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E! If you're looking to spend all your time stressing on an upper division GE class with a professor who thinks this is your one and only class, then this is it! The work load is too much, extremely tough grader who does not give you any good feedback and how to improve. I regret taking this class, Thanks for lowering my GPA
A great, challenging, inspiring, and supporting Professor. One learns a lot and the experience is indispensable! Prof. Harrison is one of the best professors at CSUN! For serious students only.
Professor Harrison is an awesome professor to take if the following things pique your interest: -Approaching literature with the context of society during the time it was written as well as the present day -Collaboration and participation in class -Practicing constructive feedback techniques that help everyone improve I had a great experience!
Do not take QS301 with her she is heartless when grading. No exceptions for any reason, her way or the highway. I took this class online and felt like I was being targeted the entire time. Pure waste of time and money, if you want to know about this subject you are better off teaching yourself.
Professor Harrison knows her stuff, so if you take feedback on assignments personally, DON'T! She wants to see us grow as writers, and will challenge you to challenge yourself. It is a tough course, no doubt, but one that will truly expand your worldview if you put in the work.
There was so much reading for this class but for the most part I found the books of choice interesting. You have to watch a few movies which do take ups some time, have 3 major essays, and one giant project at the end. I found the topic interesting so most of the work didn't feel like a chore but if you don't like analyzing things don't take her.
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED: Don't take her. Worse experience in my entire education. She is to the extreme heartless-- doesn't care if your one-minute late for an assignment, she isn't there to help you succeed or grow, don't bother reaching out. She will make you feel horrible and worthless for even trying. I took her for QS301. I totally regret it all.
I took Queer Studies 301 with the intention to learn about what the course title suggests, QUEER STUDIES... Boy was I wrong. Amanda seems to care more about grammar than the actual subject matter of the class. You are also required to read the most ridiculous books that should never see the light of day, especially in places of education. Terrible!
Absolute worst teacher at CSUN. I really hope she realizes one day that her way of teaching is making students stress out and break down emotionally. I will never take her again and do no recommend her at all. Extremely hard grader, if you mix up 1 word you are deducted 25% of that grade. Does not care about her students! DO not email her. Rudest!
Don't take her if you care about your mental health. She does not care about students, cold-hearted, and does not even reply to your emails yet expects you to understand her material without any help when you're asking. Also super rude about it when she does reply. JUST don't take her. Tough grader over minimal mistakes. So ridiculous. Stay Clear!!
Do not take her!!! She's a tough grader who takes points away for small mistakes. Expects way too much from her students. I understand we're in college, but she expects perfection. Doesn't helps her students. Overwhelms you with so much work, you can't even enjoy an interesting course. Don't take her!
I think Harrison might be enjoyable in an on campus course. The material that she chose for the semester was engaging, fun and informative. However, she didn't actually provide any lectures for the online class which I found very difficult. I had some issues with the courseload especially going into a pandemic, but overall, she is very supportive.
Make no mistake, this is not an "Easy A" class. You will have to put in work. Be prepared to analyze artists you don't like. She is VERY clear on what she wants on her papers and assignments and she even gives you EC to go to the writing center. I've never had a bad experience with her over email, in fact shes always responded quickly. Great prof.
This class is work heavy; still you learn very useful skills in her class. You learn how to properly do job interviews, create job resumes, and learn to write business emails. As long as you try your best, she will notice your effort. The most informative course I have taken thus far.
Professor Harrison was amazing! She made the semester of studying pop culture super fun. We had three essays, ten discussions, and a final project. It's really not difficult it mostly has to do with your opinion on things. She truly made the class super fun by studying beyonce, lady gaga, movies, etc. take this class you'll have so much fun!!
Avoid at all costs. I went into the class excited because of the topic but her nitpicking resulting in bad grade after bad grade made me lose all interest for the course. Lots of work and extremely particular. I've taken essay and discussion board heavy classes and never was graded this poorly.
Harrison is a super chill professor. However, be prepared for constant writing. And make sure that you get the work turned in in time or your grade will suffer greatly. She does get back to you as far as feedback for your work. You can count on her to go over your work. Just stay dedicated to the class and its workload and you should do fine.
Get ready to read a lot! Honestly a lot of the reading was unnecessary. Class consisted of weekly discussion posts, 3 essays, and a final project based on a LGBTQ song of your choosing. Her grading is is tough but she gives you the opportunity for extra credit if you get help from the LRC. If you have a busy schedule I don't recommend this class.
Beyonce heavy, It is a Beyonce class with a hint of popular culture. Loved the class though, her grading is a bit tough nothing too crazy. Do not take this class if you have no extra time, there are discussions every week and 3 essays with a final project. Overall, an organized class nothing unexpected. AS other classes should be. smh.
Professor Harrison is awesome! I took her for two classes (ENGL113 and ENGL421QS). She is clear in what she wants and expects from you. She responds to emails in a timely manner. While there is a lot of work, it's manageable and grade turn around is super quick. I took 421 during COVID, but she is so organized, it didn't affect the class at all.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER. She is beyond rude. She has little to no compassion for students. She assigned a project and tried accessing it from her PERSONAL email. She gave us a 0 because she couldnt open it. She did this to many other students. She caused a LOT of emotional distress. She also grades extremely harshly. Avoid her at all costs.
The best English professor I have encountered. While the papers were a bit complicated at times, professor Harrison was completely willing to guide me in the right direction.
Professor Harrison is awesome! Yes there is a lot of reading and a lot of writing but she is clear from the start and it is all in the syllabus. The class was online and was well organized. The assignments were current and not boring. Professor Harrison offers help during office hours as well as via appointment. Over all this class is enjoyable.
Prof Harrison deducts so many points and doesnt give you feedback to improve. She gives no support and doesnt help clarify when you email her. She piles one project after another and has a 5PM due time for an asynch course. Overall a bad teacher and would never take her course again.
Professor Harrison is one of the best professors ive had. she gets straight to the point in what she expects from you and is really understandable during our current situations. Having this class in person was a definite help, but you did not have to go for attendance. She is a great teacher and really relatable.
She gave us three big papers and does an in-class workshop for each. Not whole ton of in class discussion but there were discussion posts on canvas. Always answers emails and is available in office hours. Really helps you develop your writing. You'll pass if you don't procrastinate. No late work. I really loved the class and her teaching style.
This professor is too much. The essay prompts are longer than average. If you do not do work identical to her expectation, there is no way you can pass with an A. She has no regard for giving 0's for minor mistakes.
QS minors! Take literally anything to avoid taking this course. The way she speaks to students is so derogatory and rude that two of my group project partners dropped the course due to the distress and people have left the class crying. She gives "automatic failure" grades for objectively small mistakes and leaves rude/hurtful comments on Canvas.
Looking at the reviews, I was prepared to hate her, but Harrison is a great professor! Hyflex class, very convenient for me. Content was not difficult to comprehend. One group project. 3 papers. Discussion posts are easy. I can see why some people wouldn't like her, but she's really chill asf, just has clear, strict standards for students.
kindest most interesting professor, really cares
Harrison is rude and does not care for her students. She gives three essays (at least 1,200 words) and on top of them you have to workshop ten classmates essays at the same time. Then weekly discussions. Does not accept late work, and only gives 40 points EC. Everything due at on Sundays. Do not take this class if you want any sort of free time.
I will never take Professor Harrison again. Firstly, she does not care for her students and doesn't understand that we all have lives and have other classes to complete. Also, get ready to do a lot of writing because, on top of 3 1,200-word essays, you have to workshop 10 essays for each essay, so you will be workshopping 25-30 essays in total.
She's picky, sassy rude, hands out zeros mercilessly. Assignments are due Sundays at 5 pm. The key to doing well is making sure u contact her before assignments are due to make sure ur on the right track bc the criteria is a long checklist & the prompt is somehow still vague Good qualities: provides textbook & replies very quickly if u have qs.
the class was a lot of work if you're not willing to put the effort in. 3 essays, 1 presentation, reviewing 30+ essays on top of submitting your own, lots of reading (provides free/easy access texts). The prof. She was kind of sassy and could be curt/short/rude but I think she is trying to bring the best out of her students. tough grader
She replies back to emails incredibly quickly. All of her feedback is clear. This is an upper division class, and she treats it like such. I never felt confused about what was expected of me and her Canvas is organized. Very easy class if you're willing to put in even a little bit of effort.
Professor Harrison is rude; copy and paste her feedback to most students. Assignments were confusing and came off as intimidating and rude when you met with her through Zoom. Lots of writing, research, and peer review of 29 students. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! Unless your major is English, then she may be the professor for you.
Assignments are vague and unclear, I would get scared to ask her anything because she's so mean with her grading comments. This class is difficult to manage if you're taking a lot of class and especially if you are not an english major. Tons of work and peer reviews to put it off she's a hard grader as well.
This professor is very rude, not only does she copy and paste her responses to several students, but she doesn't even care to tell you clearly what was wrong with your answers or give an example of how it should be done next time. In her syllabus no late policy, so even if you're dying you need to give her a doctors note or tell her before you die.
This professor is very rude, not only does she copy and paste her responses to several students, but she doesn't even care to tell you clearly what was wrong with your answers or give an example of how it should be done next time. She presents this course as if it were the only class you have for the semester.
I get why ppl don't like her, she can be short and sassy, but... she's not the devil like ppl are making her out to be lmao. she's actually really nice, just doesn't coddle you or treat you like a kid and hold your hand through assignments. expectations for this class are clear. nothing difficult (if ur an english major). 3 essays (1k words)
Professor Harrison can be seen as rude, tough grader, short. But in reality, she is really sweet, caring & respected. She makes herself available& is very detail oriented on everything she writes. If you take the time to attend her office hours, read (maybe re-read a few times) & show interest, you will find her classes to be very interesting.
Professor doesn't care to help with her responses and feedback and uses workshops to lessen her own workload by making it an assignment that requires more work than needed for having to look at 10 of your classmates papers. Boring class that just covers the same discussion posts every other class has and a absurd amount of work for essays.
This professor needs to be fired because she is overall unprofessional and a rude professor. She is not helpful with anything instead she gives vague responses. Also she is picky, sassy, and a tough grader. She does not encourage you to do well next time, instead she criticizes you for making small mistake. She causes great emotional distress!
don't take this class unless you're an english major. way too much work. tough grader. harsh feedback. boring. rude. nitpicks over small details. whole class is centered around gender so you just end up doing the same topics over and over again. does offer extra credit tho!
she assigns lots of very hard papers that require a lot of effort. very vague replies and i would even joke that she gives us riddles to solve instead of an answer to our question. very heavy workload and grades tough but offers a ton of extra credit. her course is very necessary and useful if you will take courses that involve report/apa writing.
Her 1 star ratings are accurate and I wish I had believed them before taking this class. Harsh grader, will deduct alot for small things. Seems approachable until you finally reach out, she's rude and not helpful. Her responses are definitely not professional and not like a professor should talk. Gave me so much stress. Do not recommend!
Don't take this course unless you love to read A LOT, and you love to feel stressed out. This professor is a very tough grader. I have never taken an english course this difficult. Save yourself !!!
Pay attention to the 1 ratings. These are the true ratings. She always has her fave circle, and those are the 5 kiss-up ratings. REAL DETAILS: She is NOT a good professor BY ANY standards. NOT professional, rude. Makes workshops so she does not have to grade. Avoid aggravation, stress and self-doubt she will make you feel. Should not be teaching.
I learned absolutely nothing. Group presents every week and she just provides feedback. She expects perfection and is a tough grader. She is specific about assignment details though.
This professor is too much to deal with. Her class is very vague and I did not learn anything in that class. When I asked her about an upcoming assignment, she yelled at me for no reason. She has an attitude and she is rude. Whatever you do, please avoid taking Harrison. She causes emotional distress. I have never taken a class that was difficult.
!BEWARE! the RUDEST&SASSIEST and VERY UNPROFESSIONAL prof i've ever taken with. Avoid her at all costs! if i could give 0 star i would. Taking class with her WILL RUIN your semester. don't waste your time, look for someone else i promise you. Jesus can't even save you from her, but i am saving you right now GET AWAY FROM HER
She's unbelievably terrible. Not sure how she's even hired. They might have gotten the wrong professor and this whole class was an accident. truly unbelievable and speechless with how bad it was. Cannot believe I wasted time and energy over this class that taught me NOTHING. I wish I had read the reviews before. Flabbergasted.
DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF! You as a student will be grading your peers' assignments! She relies heavily on turnitin and students to do HER job for her. She provides ZERO feedback even if you ask her to but criticizes your work. She tells you to “ChEcK ThE SyLlAbUs” as a disregard to your questions and inquiries. You won't learn a THING.
This professor was extremely strict and particular with grading, especially when it came to essays. Many students in the class ended up failing due to her rigid expectations. If you're looking for a more understanding or flexible instructor, I would recommend taking a different professor to avoid unnecessary stress.
I don't recommend taking this professor. Her grading is extremely strict and she tends to deduct points for the smallest issues in essays. She lacks understanding and is not supportive of her students, often responding in an unhelpful or dismissive manner. If you want a fair and supportive professor, I suggest looking for someone else.
This professor is a conundrum. Feedback on essays are mid at best. When you inquire further, professor does not elaborate. Rants about AI. Ok. Makes claims about small assignments don't matter. This is a lie, they can lower you a whole letter grade. I felt like I taught myself and I am not sure how my writing improved at all.
A fantastic professor if you are willing to put in any effort at all. Lectures are funny, interesting, and informative. She helps students in and out of the classroom. I would take every class she offers if I could.
I don't recommend you take any of Amanda Harrison's courses if you're a full time student. She causes academic and emotional stress due to all the work she assigns. When you ask her for feedback on essays she's very vague. Which isn't helpful because she's a tough grader. (very unprofessional)
SHRILLEST voice I've ever had to endure as a student. She talks A LOT too. Heavy readings (I skimmed and got by). Makes the course way more complicated than it needs to be. 2 big assignments involve multimedia projects (100% not my thing). She 100% wants students to succeed though. Very caring and will check in with you.
These negative reviews are on the extreme, reactionary side. She is caring and communicative when sought. Her grading criteria adheres to college-level, MLA formatted papers. If you can read and write well, put in the work and your writing will improve. Her topics may be decisive, but she encourages critical thinking. Challenging, yet worth it.
Professor Harrison implies that her directions for writings are clear, however they are not. Her feedback on writings are not constructive or helpful. Her workload is unbearable. If you would like an understanding professor I recommend looking elsewhere. There's professors with better teaching methods.
I LOVE her. I took her ENGL355 class in Fall 2023 and TO THIS DAY she still reaches out to send me opportunities and write letters of recommendation for me. Her feedback is VERY helpful and she actually teaches you new skills and techniques. Lectures are interesting and informative and I wish I had time in my schedule to take her classes again.
Do not take this class. Professor Harrison is a tough grader and is very vague with feedback. Her assignment prompts are also very fluffed up with a bunch of word jumbo that is not necessary at all. All together a very confusing course that is not worth your time. Don't take classes with this professor.
Classmates complain of her, I didn't share the same sentiment. Directions are confusing. I essentially had to study the modules and rewrite my own directions to know I gathered all information for one assignment. If you procrastinate, you might not like the class with any professor but you'll probably blame it on her.
Doesn't grade based on criteria in syllabus and instructions and instead deducts points for things not clearly stated. Unless you ask directly why she's removing points then she won't tell you and your grade will suffer even if you follow everything exactly as stated. HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT taking this class if you are on the fence about it.
Rude and unprofessional. Guidelines for assignments are unclear. She doesn't really teach and will have the students do presentations for the majority of the semester that take up the bulk of the class. Genuinely regret taking the class as she gives no feedback on assignments even if you follow the directions down to the letter. Terrible and awful.
Professor Harrison is rude, unprofessional, and vague in her feedback. Her grading is harsh and inconsistent with the syllabus. She gives unclear instructions, relies on students to teach through endless presentations, and offers no real guidance. This class caused more stress than learning. Avoid at all costs. These 1 star ratings are accurate!!!
Taking Professor Harrison's class is a trap. She uses Turnitin for every assignment and homework, nitpicks over the smallest things, and hands out zeros without warning. She once yelled at me for asking a simple question. Rants about AI, gives vague feedback, and creates constant stress. Avoid this class if you value your GPA and peace of mind.
Expects way too much for an intro class, not a welcoming advocate for this topic or major, picky with grades with no feedback, pretends to care for student well-being and will assign more unnecessary assignments the next day, incapable of having a solid conversation regarding course assignments/instructions. Would not recommend, atleast NOT online.
Stay far away as possible
Do not recommend
Poor choice of books she chooses to make her students read and then have to write about it. I was not interested in reading about a gay dude who tries to justify molestation and abuse. You havwe to go along with her political liberal rhetoric to avoid a poor grade.
