Amanda was honestly one of the worst professors I have encountered in my educational journey. to put it plainly she is there to do research, not to teach and she really does not care whether you understand the material or do well in class at all. She talks extremely fast during lecture and explains things extremely poorly. Do not recommend at all.
Look, this seemed hard when youre taking it but if you go to class, put in the effort to study and do the quizzes twice, you should be ok. The class averages were always around 60 for the test. She has anywhere between 60-110 slides per-lecture so dont even take notes, just print the slides off and study those. If youre a pre-med, take her.
Amanda was a fine professor, seemed to really care about what she was teaching and wanted students to learn. My only complaint is some of the questions on her tests aren't quite clear, but if you study diligently you should do fine in spite of this.
Amanda is not my favorite teacher by any means, her lectures were confusing and she would fly through 80 slides in a 50 minute class. I got B's on all of the tests, so it is possible to do well but takes dedication. I don't highly recommend.
A majority of the time I had no idea what was going on in this course because of her poor teaching style. It's hard to remain engaged in this class because her power points are extremely boring and useless. I did well because I am dedicated to biology, but otherwise I would've failed.
She was a great professor! Graded by exams and clicker questions. Her lectures were clear and she only tests you on what she has on her slides. Her slides are available to students.
Amanda is a new teacher. Just a couple years ago she was my cell bio TA. As a fresh PhD, it wasn't the best lecture class, but she really cares and tries. She's enthusiastic about the material, and her own orangutan research is cool. I know she'll improve with each class she teaches, so don't write her off yet. Lots of slides & clickers.
I took this class fall semester of my freshmen year and reading the reviews on here were definitely very scary, but I do have to say she is a really great professor you defiantly do have to work, but if you manage your time and make sure you study for an hour each day its possible to do super good, you just have to try.
Hoepfner is very enthusiastic about what she's teaching, but with a huge lecture hall, it's sometimes difficult to keep up. She goes through slides fast but does provide them online to view. Her tests aren't the easiest but if you study well you'll be fine. She also gives quite a bit of work outside of class. This is not a class to slack off in.
She's a great professor. I love learning from people who are clearly passionate about their subject and about helping you learn more about it, which describes her. She's not the most polished lecturer, but she knows her stuff very well. If you study her slides and genuinely try to understand the concepts you'll do well in her class.
Exams are huge portion of your grade. Not very clear as to what are on the exams. Shes nice just a little bit overloading on info.
Professor Hoepfner is an amazing instructor. She really makes sure the class understands the material. Her lectures are very well organized and her PowerPoints are very helpful. Definitely one of the best professors I've had!
Pretty good for beginning bio. Only complaint is she goes through the lectures really fast, and if you distracted for a second, you are doomed. Syllabus isn't accurate at all, and a little test heavy. But she posts the lecture slides on canvas before the lecture so you can follow along. She sounds like she really likes her job.
Gives way too much information on slides and expects you to write everything you can down in the 30 seconds you have to look at the slides. The only thing you'll be graded on is tests, homework never gets graded. She also went through 7 chapters in two weeks then had a test, while every other class is 10+ chapters behind.
This is obviously a more difficult course, but she is a very good instructor, always positive and wants students to succeed. The only thing is the tests are written very hard (as it is a "weed out" class) but she is a good professor, you just need to keep up because she moves fast and work hard outside of class.
Unreasonably fast-paced course, blazing through 3-5 chapters/week. Majority of grade is from exams, which are fairly difficult and graded incredibly slowly. She's not a very good public speaker, often conflating terms (homozygous vs heterozygous, etc) which can be confusing. Take with a different professor, if you can.
Be prepared to do a bunch of Mastering Biology homework. She makes 5 or so modules due on mondays, yet you won't get a good grade on them if you do them before monday. Each module has about 20-30 questions each, and can take a lot of time to get through. She also breezes through the powerpoints and expects you can write down everything in 30 sec
No makeup exams, which isn't atypical, but there are 3 possible points of extra credit throughout the ENTIRE semester so don't miss any. She constantly mispronounced important biological terms like nucleus & Drosophila, which was disconcerting. She seemed to be bad at keeping students' attention (but it was a big class, so I'll cut her some slack).
This is my second time taking biology. I took it from another professor and failed miserably. I wanted to retake biology because I love the subject and Amanda is the BEST biology professor you will find! Her lectures are interesting and you can download them at home and study them. Mastering Bio isnt even that hard. I highly recommend her.
Spent very little time incorporating students into lectures. She is more interested in showing students how much she knows rather than teaching the subject itself. I would never recommend her as a Biology Professor.
There is a lot of material covered in a short amount of time and there is a lot of homework, but it honestly is not hard if you stay on top of it. Best resource for this class: YOUR TA's!!!! Most of them hold weekly study sessions & discussions. They help a ton for studying for exams. Another tip: work on MasteringBio in groups so you can collab.
She goes through PowerPoints super quick in class, but all her notes and slides are posted online. I would recommend printing off the slides before class and taking notes of additional things she says on those notes. You really don't need the textbook. It might be a good study resource but DON'T BUY IT! If anything just check it out at library.
She's a really nice teacher with pretty clear standards. You won't even need the book, just re read her slides. Prepare to do bad on the first exam, but it gets a lot easier from there. The exams are a lot simpler than you think they're going to be. Just pay attention and do the homework and you'll be just fine.
All of the lecture notes are posted online, but Amanda's lectures provide better ways to retain the information. Hold onto exams because they make it easier to study for the final exam. I got by with only studying for a few hours for each exam. There were always a few questions in the exams that we were never taught, so using the textbook is great.
She goes through the material quite fast but the homework is helpful and taking notes is a must. I enjoyed this class.
I was very nervous going into this class having little background in biology. She made it very clear on the first day that she wants you to succeed and that your effort is the only thing that will allow you to do that. She loves what she teaches and she makes you love and live it. AMAZING CLASS, BETTER PROFESSOR!
Avoid if you can. Dr. Hoepfner is nice enough but takes up a lot of class time with random assignments that feel like junior high busywork. There are 2+ quizzes and 2+ weird homework drawings due every week. This class isn't hard, but the routine of it is exhausting. It's a shame that such exciting material is handled in such an ineffective way.
Professor Hoepfner was the best of the three professors teaching BIO 1620. Colin was terrible, and Don was okay, but it was like this was their first semester ever teaching a university class. Amanda, on the other hand was organized, and delivered the material in a way that was understandable. Definitely the best out of the 3 profs teaching bio 120
Good professor, but tests are a bit difficult, where the wording of the problem messes you up, and TA's and LA's dont know much about the class.
She seems passionate about her work and that is a good thing, however, she lacks the professional nature of professors. She stated that we were not allowed to submit regrades because we had abused them. If she was more professional and understanding she would be a world class professor. I hope she becomes more understanding of grades and situations
It's the absolute worst how professors in intro classes feel the need to make their classes as hard as possible not realizing we have other classes too. I ended up missing an assignment because of some medical issues, and she refused to accept my late homework. I learned more teaching myself than I did from Professor Hoepfner.
Professor Hoepfner made the class full of interesting material incredibly boring and tedious. She gave multiple assignments a week (2 pre-class quizzes, 2 worksheets, 2 drawing assignments, and a post-class quiz, plus clicker quizzes through the videos). She was also not an understanding professor at all. I would not take from her ever again.
When you listen to her lectures she seems like a good professor, however, she does not care about what is going on in your life, all she cares about is if you turn is homework on time, no exceptions. NONE. She is too preachy and is really a stick in the mud when you need some wiggle room. Doesn't care if you're affected by COVID-19. NOT ONE BIT.
Terrible class.
Really hope no one else has to take multiple classes from Amanda. Honestly ruins the biology department. She tries to teach learning habits to college kids like they are toddlers. Ex. 12 clickers a class to make sure you show up when the lectures are recorded anyways. Incredibly inefficient and thinks she's more important than everything else. Run
She makes no effort to accommodate for or help out students undergoing extenuating circumstances, ESPECIALLY with COVID going on and with students needing more leniency and flexibility with their classes. Even after reaching out several times for extra help or resources, or even a little flexibility, she is very condescending and hard to work with.
Prof Hoepfner is an organized and straight-forward teacher. If you do the pre-class quizzes (3 tries & super easy), post-class assignments (graded easily!), and quizzes you will do fine. She drops so many assignments and attendance, so there's definite leniency for students. TL;DR - go to class, learn content, succeed -quizzes are basic knowledge
Really interesting class. Lots of homework, in-class activities, clicker questions (doesn't require much effort though). Quizzes were fairly in line with the material learned. Professor cares a lot about this subject so expect a somewhat passionate lecture tone.
Amanda should not be teaching. I took her course this semester which was online due to COVID. Amanda could really care less about her students though. When asked if she could drop one of the quizzes (asked by multiple students throughout the semester) she promptly refused without giving any reason, which contributed to my grade in the course.
Most people on here are just whining because Amanda didn't change her class structure to accommodate students who didn't do the bare minimum. She is an interesting and knowledgeable professor. 1620 is rather easy; go to class and study the quizzes/exam objectives provided and you'll do very well. The videos she provides and the lectures are great.
She is very well-spoken and I really enjoyed her lectures! I think most people complaining probably didn't do a lot of the work because Prof. Hoepfner has a system built in for students who are unable to make some classes, miss assignments/quizzes. She drops a lot of your lowest scores, so people probably just used all of theirs and needed more.
Bad reviews are mainly in response to the class as a whole. Amanda does a good job of communicating grading criteria as well as subjects covered in exams. TONS of dropped assignments, effective teaching. Took off a point because she's mean to the other professor who teaches the second half of this course. You disrespect Donald, you disrespect me.
When Amanda assigns tests/quizzes, she does not give you enough time especially when she has a lot of short answers. If you do not use the specific wordings that she uses, you will simply not get credit. Overall, she is a pretty tough grader and really doesn't seem to care about her students.
not supportive
She was an okay lecturer. She got her point across, but it was often hard to tell what was most important for us to study. She expected us to put in a lot of time and effort outside of class. She was big on group discussion. Exams and quizzes were both very hard, and no outside help was allowed. I probably spent about 15 hours a week on this class.
Nice person but very tough grader. She is very unclear about what to study, so the tests are always a surprise. Her voice is tough to listen to over zoom.
I've really enjoyed Dr. Hoepfner's class. Quizzes are hard but the exams test exactly what is outlined in the study guides at the end of each lecture. Coming from 1610, this class is a walk in the park. This class makes it clear what you need to understand and everything is very organized. Discussion is pointless though. Good class overall!
Clicker attendance is mandatory; 6 quizzes, lowest is dropped; I would make sure to enjoy the material, its vocab based and easy; work in study groups!; If given the opportunity to retake this course again, I would just keep up with the topics and do the study guides at the end of each chapter; great professor and not too bad.
Expectations for exams were not clear. There hasn't been a 100% on exams by anyone this semester. Also claimed that she was not trying to "trick" us on exams and then proceeded to give us many trick questions. Would go off topic to ramble about how we should take 1620. Wouldn't show up to review sessions or discussions while the other professor did
BIOL 2870 is probably the easiest class Ive taken so far. You are graded on attendance (5pts each class) and summaries of the lectures each class (5pts each class). Just show up to the 50 minute class once a week and just summarize what the lecturers say. Easy A. Also, if you miss a class you can submit an extra credit assignment for 10pts.
She does not help support students at all (does not have review sessions, quizzes don't prep for test, discussions don't help and even has assignments that she expects you to turn in and doesn't put them as an assignment on canvas). Her quizzes have TOO MANY questions that have multiple parts and NOT enough time. Material not clearly conveyed.
Did not support students at all!!! No reviews for exams or quizzes. Quizzes never had enough time and exams were way too long. Lecture was very very boring. Attendance was required with clicker questions and forced group assignments in class which were also part of attendance. Unfortunate that she was the only professor for bio 1620.
Amanda is much better at teaching than James. She doesn't rant and rave about random subjects and gets right to the point which I really liked. this is a bio class, get ready to work for your grade. I found the subjects easy to learn but you do have to study. Amanda does a good job leading you in the right direction for the tests. James does not.
Amanda is a nice enough person, but frustrating when it comes to grading. She likes to trip you up with specific wording on quizzes and exams. She can be a little monotonous, which isn't ideal for 8 am classes. She's about as average as average can get. Not horrible, not great.
Overall, pretty good. The class could be a bit boring at times and the clicker questions were confusing. Don't buy the textbook. The class overall wasn't terrible and didn't require too much work.
Amanda was a good professor and made the expectations for the course clear from the start. Exams and quizzes were doable if you studied the lectures. Reading the book helps as well. Don't fall behind on your work load and you will do well in the class!
This class was a breeze; I genuinely don't think they could make this class easier without just giving people A's. Lots of HW, but easy and most of it is just participation (only graded on if you tried it or not). Barely studied for any of the tests and always got +80%. Her attitude is good, ignore other reviews. She obviously wants you to succeed.
Dr. Hoepfner was an amazing professor! 1620 is a lowkey class where you try, but effort gets you most of the way there. She would answer lots of questions related to the topic (even if it wasn't planned to be taught), so bring your curiosity with you and don't be afraid to ask her questions! :) Try (and not even that hard) and you'll do great!
A great lecturer, she gets straight to the point without any additional non-needed information. She explains things pretty well, and her expectations are clear. Tests and quizzes are confusing, she uses specific words and terms which hide the real answer. The class isn't too hard if you participate and do assignments. Lectures may get monotone.
Amanda is a great professor and passionate about the stuff she teaches. I took her for BIOL 1620 and 3410 and both classes were really fun and engaging. She uses lots of different tools to engage you (iClicker, quizzes, preclass work, exams, etc.) No extra credit! I wish she taught on her own because the professors she taught with weren't great.
The most frustrating part of this class was the Clickers. Everything she taught us in class, I could teach myself at home. She's very kind and passionate, but she basically reads off the slides. Class time felt like a chore and a waste. The pre-class problems during the ecology section are impossible without the textbook, despite it not being req'd
There is clear stated objectives so you know exactly what you need to take away from the lectures. She is very open, and encouraging of, questions.
She makes an effort to know her students and is open to meeting with them outside of class. She cares about the material and making sure her students understand it. Clear learning objectives and engaging lectures.
Wonderful professor and human. She is super clear with expectations. This course is fun.
This is a theoretical class and if you don't give an answer that she likes right or wrong you WILL get it wrong. She likes to put question on the test the are "select all that apply" and if get them all right but one you will miss it. She also says "give the best" answer and best is her opinion. even if your answer is right, it has to be her answer
Dr. Hoepfner clearly cares about ecology and evolution and it will definitely rub off on you! She shows how these topics apply to all life science careers (including medicine) which is definitely not something you find many bio profs showing you. Definitely go to lecture, it helps prep you for exams fairly well. I love Amanda! :)
Dr. Hoepfner's BIOL 1620 course showcased her expertise, but I found it to be lecture-heavy, and her presentation came across as condescending, implying the material was beyond undergraduates' grasp. While appreciating her kindness, her teaching tactics and philosophy didn't resonate with me.
Dr. Hoepfner's knowledge was evident, but the lectures felt overwhelmingly dense with extraneous information. It seemed she was more focused on finishing the material than ensuring students' comprehension. The lack of responsiveness to student feedback was disappointing. Although pleasant, her teaching tactics and philosophy left much to be desired
Easy dubs. Got 101% on the first exam. As long as you go to class every day, you should know all the content.
Talks the entire time, does not check for understanding.
Great professor. She's open to and patient with questions and it's evident that she wants her students to understand the material. The lectures are content-heavy but very thorough.
Amanda is great. She's super entertaining. My friends and I called her animal girl because we could never remember her last name. Anywho, she knows what she is talking about and it's rather impressive just how passionate she is. Would highly recommend taking all of her BIOL classes.
A little too much information in the slides regarding content, but she was a great professor nonetheless
Amanda is always willing to help people understand the material and never shames for the wrong answer. However, I took this class at 8 am and cannot tell you how many times I fell asleep while she was lecturing. They're boring and rudimentary. Exams are often "choose all that apply" with very similar answer options and have short answer portions.
Great lectures with clear learning outcomes and relevant homework. I enjoyed her teaching style, even at 8 am she was always very prepared to teach. If you learn to take detailed notes and can connect overarching topics, you will ace her class.
She is a very kind professor. She talks from a set of slides which if thats your learning style its very easy going. However the class has a work load for sure. I loved her as a professor, she may just not have everyones teaching style.
Professor Hoepfner is a really kind person. However, this class was extremely difficult and I don't feel that she helped. She takes a long time to respond to emails. She is very knowledgable but she often overloads her students with a ton of information during her lectures. Maybe it was just the way this class was set up, but it was a ton of work.
Amanda was a decent professor and her lectures were generally engaging and informative. However, she has unrealistic expectations of students out of class time, for example, assigning a Friday take home quiz even though class was not on Fridays. She is very condescending over email, and refuses to make any exceptions to due dates for any reason.
Knowledgeable professor but it always seemed like she was talking down to the class and treating us like elementary students. Slides were very word heavy and lectures dragged on and got repetitive and boring. The material overall is a little dry. Exams were pretty fair and matched lecture material, but this is not a fun class to sit through
Professor Hoepfner was great during lectures but they are just boring and she sometimes treats her students like middle schoolers. The material is boring at times but all the information you learn is straight on the tests. Her weekly home-works are easy and the Friday quizzes are simple. Overall, she was decent but could have been more energetic.
She is very nice but the class is super boring and every exam is "select all that apply" which makes them super hard. If you try really hard you can get an A but don't expect an easy A
She's a great lecturer. She gets straight to the point and doesn't go on tangents. Her PowerPoints are amazing. Full of relevant info, objectives that tell you exactly what u need to know for exams could be a bit long at times. Love that she tells you exactly what u need to do to get a good grade. Clickers and quizzes are awesome.
Loved this class!! She always asks for understanding and will go over things if we don't completely understand what is happening. She seems to be very knowledgeable and cares about her students.
Dr. Hoepfner is amazing! She completely changed my outlook on Ecology. Clear lectures with expected learning outcomes highlighted. 10/10 would recommend!
She is such a kind teacher. Not a lot of busy work. She wants her students to understand. Ngl she would also be a great pre school teacher
If you've never taken AP Bio or any type of bio class, this class is going to feel like you're being overloaded with information because Amanda reads off slides and moves quickly. She does a good job explaining topics and preparing you for the tests (if you pay attention). The TA's also hosted mock exams that were very similar to the midterms.
Great professor, but can easily get lost as Amanda moves quickly between slides. Very kind and provides many resources, including TA mock exams and review sessions that were essential to pass the exams. Weekly assignments on McGraw Hill and canvas, where mediocre advice would be given.
Her tests are very easy if you know the asnwers to all the learning objectives which she gives at the start of each lecture, there is really no reason to study anything but these as they are the only things on the exams. Some of the lectures for this course where a little repetative but for the most part it was interesting and well structured.
Amanda is definitely a tough nut to crack at times. She is not as warm as the other BIOL professors, but she's a great lecturer who cares about her students' success.
I love Amanda so much, she is an incredible professor, an amazing person, she cares so much about teaching the material and of her students. She helped me on a personal level and honestly have never had a better professor in my life.
Amanda is amazing! She single-handedly changed my perspective on ecology and evolution. I went from almost changing my major to avoid the course to looking forward to it every day. She clearly outlines information for exams, while also presenting intellectually challenging material. This is one of the few classes, and professors, I would recommend!
I love Professor Hoepfner. She is passionate about the material and teaches it well. The homework she assigns applies very well to exam material, and also provides mock exams as well as weekly review sessions with the TAs. For an introductory biology course, I enjoyed having her as my professor.
I LOVE AMANDA!!! she is the best bio professor for every class I've taken with her. Her expectations are clear and she provides so many resources to students. She's very easy to get in touch with and talking with her after class is so much fun! I will always recommend her. She's makes boring or challenging concepts fun to learn about :)
Amanda is seriously so kind and energetic. I loved her as a professor but just did not like the class very much. Make sure to pay attention during lecture and get ready to study a lot on your own.
I had her for Bio 1 and thought she was great! You definitely need to attend class, but if you do you will do well.
Truly an angel. Amanda cares about her students and their success. She is passionate about teaching and explains things well. If you do not utilize her resources, you will not do well. Show up to class and discussions. Go to her office hours as much as you can. Great way to get to know her, especially if you are a Bio major as she teaches 1620 too.
This class was frustrating due to the required attendance via iclicker. I feel like I could have done just as well in class without going to lecture. Lectures were long and boring, even though Amanda is passionate. Also, it may seem like "common sense," but she will test you on very specific/nitpicky things from the slides.
Really enthusiastic and fun professor! I really enjoyed her presentations and her enthusiasm and energy it worth it despite my class being so early in the morning. The class isn't too hard outside of that as well. Really recommended!
She is super enthusiastic about what she does and even though lectures are long it is easy to stay focused. The grading also feels really fair, and you will do well in this class as long as you are willing to put in a little effort.
I usually drive without holding the steering wheel on the way to her class. I personally think she is a decent person but not as a professor. Her tone is condescending, like she's talking to children, and the wording of her tests is very confusing and unclear. If you can take this class with someone else, just RUN.
She's a good professor, very interested in what she's talking about and very good takes always. However, attendance is so strict and you can get points off even if you're in class. Not super straightforward test questions.
She is a great teacher and explains things clearly. Her tests are never convoluted, and she pulls questions directly from the slides. Understand the slides + practice questions and an A is easy. The things other reviews say about her being a little condescending are not wrong, but that doesn't mean the class is hard. Only con: mandatory attendance.
The sweetest, kindest professer here. She really is passionate about what she teaches. It can be hard in a big lecture hall such as for 1610 so I think its wise to sit closer and build a relationship. I've had her for 3 semesters and she has helped me so much build my love for science and biology, I totally would take her for the rest of my degree!
One of my fav classes ever taken! Loved her passion and her way of lecture. Super willing to help and obviously cares about you and wants to get to know you. I really thought that I would hate this class but her enthusiasm made it so fun. Just take notes, attend all the lectures, form study groups, and go to office hours to really learn.
I thought Amanda Hoepfner was overall a good teacher. Her tests and quizzes were kind of difficult because a lot of the questions were "select all that apply" which can be hard to suss out. I wish she would have provided more practice materials for the exams.
Great lecturer, the material was easy to understand. The exams were near impossible unless you have a degree already in biology. She was easy to meet with but even if your answers are correct, she will mark it with 0 points because she's looking for google ai overview level answers. I didn't see one person get a 100% on any of the exams. Be weary.
Just please…avoid this class….the tests made me want to die.
overall this class made me want to die everyday :(
She was fine. Boring lectures that felt like I was sitting in my highschool biology class. Attendance was mandatory but all the information was on the slides so you can miss a few times and be fine. Once you understand how she formats her tests the class gets pretty easy.
The class is completely useless and there is no reason it should be required. If you took bio 2 you'll do fine but she teaches as if the material is rocket science. She might be the most condescending person I have ever met in my life and it just makes an already unenjoyable class irritating to be in. Also, exam questions have terrible wording.
Pros: - Amanda is passionate about her work and it shows in class. - Amanda tries her hardest to make the material interesting. Cons: - Terrible slides; good luck studying on your own - vague questions on tests - Discussions are not helpful - Mandatory Attendance for a class that should be online - Zero flexibility for nontraditional students
She is genuinely the sweetest human on Earth. She cares about her students and is easy to access outside of class. Only 2 midterms that are pretty easy if you study, but there's is a lot of "select all that apply". She breaks lectures down so they're easy to understand and I really enjoyed her and want to take more classes with her in the future.
I took 1620 with Amanda and wasn't a huge fan, but when I took her class for BIOL 3410, she was great! Her lectures were super interesting, and she talked a lot about climate change, which was amazing. Her exams are pretty straightforward if you study, and attendance is extra credit.
Amanda makes Ecology and Evolution very fascinating, she makes this class into one of the easiest class in bio major. The slides and homework gives a lot of helpful examples to help me thinking about how nature and life work. If you don't understand the concept, she is more than willing to help you if you asked her questions after class.
