She is a really good professor! I had her for Fall 2020 semester. The class is set up so you watch lecture videos on your time , and during class you work on a worksheet based off of the recorded lecture, which helps to really grasp a better understanding on the lesson and is available if you have any questions. Wish I could have her for CHE 1102!
I loved Dr. Howell seriously one of the best chem professors ever! I had her online, she explains very well. Shes actually the best professor I have ever had. You will learn so much from her as long as you pay attention and go to class. She posts video lectures then in class goes out additional examples worksheets which is so helpful! AMAZING!
Dr. Howell was hands down the best professor. She posted her lectures online for you to watch and then we attended zoom to go over examples that would be similar to ones on the quizzes and tests. There was a quiz every Friday but very straight forward.
Howell is the best chem professor at App. She is amazing at teaching class material and makes sure you have the tools you need to succeed in her class. She outlined how to do calculations for all lab reports. Pre lab quizzes were set by the department and are a nightmare- be prepared to bomb a few! Course was not easy, but she made it enjoyable!
Dr. Howell is an awesome professor as well as a human being. Chemistry is hard, so just know that you will have to work in order to do great. Make sure you communicate with her because she will help you if you need it. Study and attend to review sessions! :)
Dr. Howell is one of my favorite professors this semester! She brought in many people in the forensics field to come speak to us which were all fun to listen to. The class itself isn't too hard, just study and you'll do fine. I would definitely take this class again.
Dr. Howell is an amazing Professor, definitely the best chem professor at App State. She required attendance, but if want to do well in chemistry you need to attend anyways. Plus it's a free 100% Her office hours are super helpful because if you don't understand the topic she will change how she explains it. Can not say enough good things about her
She is very sweet and cares about the students. The majority of the grade is lab reports which aren't too difficult as long as you do well in the lab. You have weekly online pre-lab quizzes that are due to before your lab time but they are pretty simple. The lab reports are graded in a fairly timely manner.
Amazing teacher! Makes a boring topic not so bad to sit through and clearly cares for her students. She is very cheerful and took a break from class for us to see the early November snowfall outside! Everything online except mid-term and final which makes it very easy to do well in her class! Highly recommend!
The teaching method was amazing. Online lecture videos but the entire time In class was working through problem sets, this led to good class understanding.
One of the nicest professors I have had here at App. Write down all due dates- I have missed a few assignments by not checking what day over the weekend something is due. If you are bad at chemistry like me, she has many other assignments that help your grade as long as you put in the effort. She is your best bet out of all the chem teachers here.
Dr. Howell is one of the sweetest professors ever, I struggle a lot with chemistry in general but she explains things in a pretty easy to understand way and makes sure everyone gets it. There isn't too much work either and you'll get a good grade if you do it.
Dr. Howell is a very sweet and caring professor. She goes into great detail explaining and working out problems in her class and constantly makes sure everyone is on track. If you are constantly present and engaged, which you should be in a class like chemistry, you will do just fine in Dr. Howell's class.
Dr. Howell is genuinely a very caring and nice professor. Chemistry can be a very difficult course at times but she gives plenty of opportunities for extra help and goes over many practice problems during lectures. You will have to put a good amount of effort into the class to retain the information & do well. She makes chemistry very approachable.
Dr. Howell is very kind. She is also very knowledgable, however she is extremely difficult to access outside of class. The content itself is very easy but the assignments you are graded on are few, infrequent, and often damaging to your grade. With that being said, as a person I loved Dr. Howell. Super kind and probably a good fit for intro.
Dr. Howell is a great teacher. I actually enjoyed chemistry and she made it very understandable. Quiz once a week along with watching videos, reflection activities (both easy 100), and a homework assignment due at the end of each module. As long as you are present and actively learning, you will do good in the class.
She is extremely nice. Chem 1 can be very hard, but she was very slow, open to questions, willing to listen, and careful to explain in detail. She gets a lot of emails and has a hard time responding but she has a lot of LEAD tutors to help after class so I seriously recommend her.
You have to keep up with the material because if you don't then you have to cram before exams. No big tests but weekly online quizzes with two attempts. Not difficult at all and she goes slow to make sure that everyone understands. Would definetly recommend her.
You have to watch videos for each module and take notes on them on your own. She works on problems during class to really help you understand the material. The style of questions on these problems she uses on her quizzes, so pay attention! You take each quiz online on your own time. 10/10 teaching, very nice professor. Take her if you can!
Dr. Howell is super sweet and her class made chemistry enjoyable! You definitely have to be motivated to put in the work though. Quizzes are online, and you aren't technically supposed to use notes, so if you do you won't know anything when it comes to exam time. She also provides lecture videos to watch before class which are helpful for review.
Dr. Howell is sooo sweet and caring. Honestly if you are just taking CHE as a gen-ed take her 100%! Chem can be scary but at least she's not.
I dislike chem but had to take it. Howell still managed to instruct me well enough that I didn't fail. She is very friendly although has a habit of sometimes misreading questions and take it as an insult. The videos you are supposed to watch before the lecture are very helpful if you have issues focusing in during class.
Chemistry is SO HARD, but Dr Howell is so caring. I personally did not learn much by her teaching style- she NEVER lectures, just has you watch videos outside of class and does example problems in class. DO NOT skip class, turn in reflections & homework, ATTEND TUTORING. Don't take her class in the morning if you aren't a morning person.
Mrs. Howell was one of the sweetest humans ever. Never made me scared to ask a stupid question or for her to repeat herself. As for the class I think it was quite hard. There were a couple of give me assignments that accounted for 10% and the HW was 10% as well. Test were 60% and there are 4. I really disliked not having quizzes in the class.
Even though I almost failed this class, I enjoyed having her as a professor. She taught well and didn't just read of slides. I hated not having quizzes seeing exams were weights 60%, reflection and homework was 10%. I think my main issue was having to watch videos before lecture and not quite understanding the videos and being confused in class.
Absolutely amazing professor, by far one of my favorites. I retook this course for my major and I severely struggled the first time I took it but she made this class enjoyable and helped me get a great grade. Super kind, provides examples/worksheets rather than just reading PowerPoints and expecting you to know material prior to learning. Love her!
I had Howell for Chem 1 support and she was nice. Although I didn't enjoy the class itself because I thought it was somehow a waste of time for me personally, I did like her, and she was good at teaching the material. The math packet for one of the labs was extremely helpful and that alone almost made the class worth it and getting an easy credit.
THIS IS DR. HOWELL'S UPDATED CLASS STRUCTURE AS OF FALL 2023!!!!! There is no required homework, only quizzes for each chapter that account for 50% of your grade in the class. If you do not watch the videos and take pre-notes outside of class, you will barely pass this class. If you do not attend the optional tutoring, you will not pass this class.
This class was all online so we watched videos with another instructor voicing over and teaching but Professor Howell did send out weekly emails and reminders for the upcoming week. The only thing I will say is that she isn't super helpful with advice on studying tactics and techniques.
Dr. Howell is an amazing professor. If you have the option to take her, DO IT. She is always there to help. You can really see how passionate she is about chemistry. Do yourself a favor and take her class.
I loved this professor. No homework during the week so you could focus on preparing for the quizzes which were the most important for your grade. I thought she covered material well and was very kind about answering questions and explaining. Quizzes were well related to what we did in class and tutor sessions went over everything that was on it.
teaches way to fast to grasp content, quizzes are taken on days that she starts new content so confusing
Dr. Howell can teach the material well enough, but she goes too fast in her lectures, doesn't give you nearly enough time before moving on, expects you to teach yourself and spend 15 hours outside of class on studying during the week. All grades are tests so there's little room for error or improvement, if you like a bad grade this is your class.
Online course with a quiz and reflection every week or every other week. Only grades are those and the midterm and final. Gives lots of resources and her lecture videos are good. Sends emails throughout the week to remind you of deadlines and what you should be doing that week. No late work, so make sure to do everything on time.
I took chemistry asynchronously but she always had office hours in case you needed help. Her videos were really detailed and covered everything on exams and the quizzes/exams themselves weren't difficult. She doesnt drop any grades and so it was tough to not miss a quiz and have it impact your grade and does no late work, it was asynchronous though
If you're doing well in lecture, I wouldn't take this class. It's structured around forcing you to seek help outside of class, which could work well if you're struggling, but if not it'll just add to your to-do list with no return. Dr. Howell is great outside of class, very caring and accessible; but the class itself lacked real structure.
Howell is an ok professor. She moves too quickly and expects you to have a perfect grasp on all content 2 days after she goes over it. She is very quiz heavy; as soon as you finish a module there will be a quiz the next lecture. Also does not teach material in class, she expects you to learn it through videos and only does problems in class.
I absolutely adored Dr. Howell. She is genuinely the kindest, sweetest, and most caring professor I have had thus far. The class was difficult but she made it easy -- the way she taught and broke everything down into small, digestible parts was amazing. I highly recommend taking a class from Dr. Howell.
Prof. Howell was great! Chem is a difficult class but she makes it easy to understand and always has office hours that you can go to. However, if you miss a class it is hard to catch up and understand the content. She tells you ahead of time about quizzes and tests. I would definitely take a class taught by her again!
Dr. Howell was great as a professor overall, but the majority of the grades consisted of quizzes on each unit. My main complaint was that we would start a new unit before we quizzed, so it was often difficult to remember what material would be on the quiz.
Professor Howell makes chem enjoyable despite the subject's difficulty. Engaging videos, practice problems, and helpful tutoring sessions kept me on track. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for quiz prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
Dr. Howell is an angel. Her soft spoken relaxing voice guides you through each problem she does with the class while giving extra credit points when she is feeling nice. She would walk into class every morning rolling a cart of snacks, calculators, and printed out packets for students to use. I would go to her office hours just to yap.
Professor Howell is an AMAZING professor. I had her for Chem 1101. In class we'd work through worksheets together, which I found very helpful and was a good method for teaching (at least for how my brain works). She provides videos that you can watch before class to be prepared to work things out. She is super sweet, encouraging and a good teacher.
I took her class online and seemed super sweet to the students! However, I am not great with chem and I struggled and she didn't really seem to go over many slides just homework which was really heavy to have due almost every single week along with Pearson hw. Also her voice on zoom was really quiet all the time so it was easily distracting.
I had Dr. Howell for both 1101+1102, and I can confidently say she is one of the most amazing professors of all time. Recorded worksheet videos to ample resources and office hours, she does everything she can to ensure you are successful. Quizzes can be tough due to time limits yet they are manageable. Very kind, professional, and understanding; A+
Although she is so lovely and so helpful when you ask questions, I don't feel I got much out of taking this class. And maybe it's because my lecture professor was always very behind. But 90% of the time she would have guest speakers for half of the already short class so it feels we never actually went over anything. I recommend her, not this class
I really hated this class, she would not give extra credit or let me do extra work and I felt like much of the material was hard to understand.
dr howell is kind and understanding, but she is very "no nonsense", which can be interpreted as cold to some people. she gives it like it is though. very detailed pre-lab lectures, always open to questions, and definitely cares about students!
Does not respond to emails.
this class was GREAT. she sets clear schedules of when assignments are due and her recorded lectures are super helpful. the workload seems reasonable for a chemistry class, and i felt like i had enough time to complete all the assignments needed. loved!
