Incredibly intelligent, with a thorough knowledge of her subject. She grades hard, gives pop quizzes, and demands a fair amount, but you will truly benefit from her as a professor. Not a beginner class, so have significant political science understanding prior to this class.
Throws information at you in lectures and is open to questions but not the greatest at explaining. Is down to talk and work with you for help on papers during office hours but even her ideas and input aren't enough to get an A on papers. Prepare for this class to take up a lot of your time between reading, studying for super specific pop quizzes
People who have reviewed her negatively before are overreacting. Just do the readings and go to class to get good grades on the quizzes and the tests. Her grading criteria is very clear and her lectures are the best I've had in Binghamton. She's also open to questions and is nice to students! If you like well-structured classes, take this one.
The pop quizzes are based on the reading. Exams are on the readings and lectures. Lectures are not posted anywhere so show up to class, especially for the quizzes and don't be late. The class is exactly what is on the syllabus, however it is NOT an easy class. If you do what is required of you, you will do fine. Make time to study for her class.
With this professor, what you put in is exactly what you get out of the course. Pop quizzes were given sporadically on in depth comprehension of assigned readings. The other parts of the grade are tests, take home essays, and a project, which the scores of are all raw score points on your overall grade. Very difficult work load, but not impossible.
Avoid this professor at all costs!! Incredibly condescending and holds grudges against her students. Lectures useless and boring! large part of the grade is a group project; when group had conflict she kicked me and i got an F for 30% of my grade. Constantly cancels office hours, and ironically was 3 weeks late in submitting our final grades
Prof. Licht gives a lot of work, and makes you work for your grade, but she is very good professor. She is very knowledgeable, and makes the lectures super interesting! Just make sure you put in the effort, and you will enjoy her class.
She is the absolute worst. Yes she is very smart and knowledgeable but her grading criteria is ridiculous. Her readings are another level of difficult and the quizzes are way too specific. Her class is also super boring. She doesn't really care if you do well or not.
She's an okay professor but her workload is unrealistic. I don't know how she expects her students to juggle her class along with other classes. You have to but in like 10 hours for a reading and the quizzes are still hard after all that workload. She has no sympathy towards her students and if you do bad she doesn't really care.
She's great at int'l theory, but too demanding for undergrad. The grading system is horrible. She takes points off for minute details. Her syllabus/essay rubrics do not reflect what she actually wants in assignments. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. If you plan on going into IR, definitely take it. Just know that you have to put 110% in all semester long.
I actually really liked Dr. Licht. Shes very knowledgeable about almost anything you ask her in relation to the subject & good at breaking down complex info. With that said, shes tough & makes you WORK for your grade. I think she teaches one level up from where she is; I.E 300 level courses are more 400 level. BUT she is very kind/approachable.
She is a super nice woman and really knowledgeable about World Politics and real world events and all of that. With that being said she wants way too much from a class that is mainly freshman. She easily hits 50-150 pages of reading between classes and even her TAs think what she does is too much
Unrealistic amount of reading assigned, with quizzes given that still arent simple following the readings. Assignments given with unclear rubrics and tests with no review sheet and little to no idea as to what will be on it. Avoid this class for a Gen Ed.
Lots of reading for Discussion but the textbook is actually useful if you read it. Test is mainly on lecture stuff so although attendance is not taken it's important to go or at least get notes. Tests on very specific models in class. Professor really doesn't explain anything but pretty simple class. One big paper and no final this year at least.
This is the most boring class I have ever taken. Pretty much your entire grade is based on pop quizzes in discussions that are extremely specific short answer questions from the readings and there is a lot of them. Don't take the class unless you have to, she just talks during lectures without slides so it's hard to know what's actually important
She got distracted in lectures easily and the exams were mostly focused on the text books. Just read the textbook and you dont even have to go to class, but she's still a difficult grader regardless
A lot of work for a 100 level. Pop quizzes and tests are on very specific details from the lectures and readings. Test questions are also confusingly worded. 60-80 page readings weekly. Class is mostly her playing with data and answering people's irrelevant questions. Prof Licht is clearly very knowledgeable, but overall I didn't like this course.
The hardest tests ever. Really irritating. Grating on my will to live. She scared so many people out of studying political science. WORST CLASS.
I came into Binghamton wanting to be a Poli Sci major and this class made me change my mind. Not only was it the hardest class Ive taken this semester, it will probably lower my GPA significantly. She makes the course unnecessarily hard for an intro freshman class and teaches us as though were grad students. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS PLEASE!
Not an easy class. Her lectures are difficult to follow because of the way she presents the information, really boring, and often rambles about unrelated topics. She expects a lot from of students in an intro poli sci class. If you get a good TA, it makes this class easier.
Awful class! I came into Binghamton wanting to be a Poli Sci major... well that has changed. I attended every lecture and was bored to tears. She rambled on about random topics that didnt pertain to her slides and messed around with different data generators instead of teaching. If you can avoid taking a class with her I would!
Professor Licht knows what she is talking about, but teaches like she is standing in front of graduate students. Lecture is boring and tests are impossible. All she does is mess around with data generators and answer random questions. Save yourself and dont take this class. It brought my GPA down by a lot...
Honestly I don't she was bad but I wish 100% I didn't take the course. I only took it for the Gen Ed credit and it was the worse mistake of my life. Pop quizzes and test grades really bring you down. The final was easy but it didn't matter because of the insane other 75% of the class. Take another class if possible, but professor was pretty good.
Professor Licht teaches lectures as if she was teaching graduate students, shows some videos and expects u to remember one specific 15 second part of the hour long video. Lots of pop quizzes and hard tests but final was easy. Dont take the class unless its necessary.
Her tests are ridiculously unfair even if you study for hours and hours, which I did. The questions on tests were incredibly specific and hit upon topics that i studied but were incredibly irrelevant. The specificity of questions on her exams even have TA's confused as to why she's asking them. Avoid this class. However, it's not impossible.
Professor Licht definitely means well, she just comes off a little weird and intense. There are pop quizzes in the discussion sections and they can not be made up. Professor Licht teaches this course like it is a level 300 course or 400 course, as the things that are expected seem a little out of the ballpark for freshmen. I really disliked going.
Prof. Licht is awful and seriously so mean. The class is a 100 level but she teaches it way above that. There are pop quizzes every other week in discussion but they aren't even based on large concepts that are crucial for your understanding, instead on minute facts from the textbook that makes you read to memorize instead of to learn. STAY AWAY
There are no words to describe this woman. She honestly just really confuses me. Her tests are absolutely impossible and she teaches way above the course level. All of the TA's clearly did not like her and helped us out by grading leniently. I just do not understand her has a teacher or human being. Simply do not take any of her classes.
Licht destroyed my freshman year. Her lectured were interesting but incredibly dense and .01% of the material was actually on the test. Keep in mind, this material was so specific that the entire lecture hall would just look around and see if everyone was as confused as you during the test. Treats 100 level classes as 400 level classes. BEWARE
Do not take this class unless you need it. She teaches like you're a grad student and have time to spend hours reading and memorizing footnotes for pop quizzes. Literally, small phrases within 30 pages and then she has said she wants to trick students on pop quizzes. If you're an IR student, it is a gateway to what's coming in 2 years.
She is literally the worst, does not teach and kills my brain cells
By far this was one of the worst professors I have ever dealt with. Quizzes are basically impossible and have trick questions, and doesn't really teach and just has a Slack discussion board. Also - not very lenient given the whole global pandemic/online learning, would not even give an extra two days for a paper. AVOID!!!! She's also a bad grader
I don't think she is a bad teacher, but I think that she expects too much of her students at times. There is a lot of reading, a lot of lectures, and it is easy to get lost in all of it. Assignments focus on a lot of specific and minor details, rather than larger concepts & ideas. Because of this, you may learn a lot, but your GPA will suffer.
Do yourself as favor and avoid Licht as much as possible. You can expect to read all day for a quiz and then fail that quiz bc they just make no sense, same thing w the exams. Lots of headaches, stress, etc. Don't put that on yourself, find another professor.
Literally a bruh moment of college, she is the worst
Terrible
Professor Licht is the worst professor I have ever taken at Binghamton or elsewhere. She is cruel, unforgiving, rude, and overall a total pain. I had the misfortune of taking a class of hers last year too and I regret taking this one as well. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS SHE IS AWFUL.
this professor completely obliterated my interest in the field. many political science majours in my class said its difficulty was along the lines of a 300 or 400 class, which i can attest to. Definitely my hardest class during my first semester in college. whatever you do do not take this class!
Horrible. She doesn't really care if the whole class is doing doing poorly. She told our TAs to grade us harsher than they initially were and even went back to lower our first essay grades. We had to pay $35 for this "real world" simulation that barely even worked half the time and taught us absolutely nothing. Stay away if you value your sanity.
If you have a good TA and do all the required work, you will be fine. If not, then this will be a rough class. The weekly homework is very time consuming, and the quizzes and exams are annoyingly difficult and specific. This class is a manageable B, but a near impossible A. If you're taking this for a gen-ed, or an easy A, I'd highly reconsider.
I'm gonna keep it a stack with y'all: Licht is tough. She's absolutely the type of professor you should only have if you're super invested in the subject, but if you are, her level of knowledge and how deep she goes for just an intro class is unbelievable, you will learn so much. Her grading is without a doubt hard but if you tryhard you'll do good
DO NOT TAKE THIS FOR A GENED Please only take this class if you need it for your major. This class is literally impossible. There were timed reading quizzes every week that I would still do horribly on after spending hours on the readings and notes. There are two hour-long recorded lectures a week and she is terrible at explaining, and UNEMPATHETIC
Prof. Licht is a good person at heart. That being said, she should not be allowed to teach any intro-level courses. She is a very harsh grader. Her quizzes consist of weekly textbook readings of around 60 pgs where her quizzes are multiple answers of random tidbits from the book. She also pulled a lot of shenanigans with assignments and grading,
She expects too much out of her students. Readings are too long, and difficult to read/follow. She is also rude. Her pop quizzes are way too specific for such long readings. Maybe things would have been different if the class was not online, I don't know, but I would not risk your GPA for this class.
Prof. Licht is someone you either love or hate. She's extremely knowledgeable about PoliSci, so if that's what you're into - take her. You can't skimp on her classes, though. Always attend lecture, take notes, read what's assigned. She uses pop quizzes, so you need to stay on top of it. If you're trying to just slide by in college, do not take her.
I understand the bad wrap that Professor Licht may receive from students who have taken her 100-level courses, but I think this is a result of student disinterest coupled with Licht's rigor. If you are strongly into political science and things related to IR — and not afraid to put effort into the class and participate — I recommend her.
She acts like she knows everything and doesn't promote a good discussion environment. The class was boring and way too hard for a 100-level class. If she wanted to prove she was smart to a classroom full of students instead of teach them, she's doing the right thing
She is extremely harsh and rude with her comments. If you don't want to feel like you are nothing, avoid her because she will make sure to destroy every bit of confidence you have and make you feel like you shouldn't even be in the school. Avoid her at all cost.
She always make you feel like nothing and loves to tell you how much you suck or are not capable of something without recognizing the hard work you've put in. Will never recommend her. This is hazing. She should not even be a professor.
She makes you feel like you are nothing and her words are so mean that it affects my mental health. She appears to be nice when you talk to her, but she is just faking it. Her words are harsh and she does not care about student's feelings, only hers.
She is not good at lecturing and expects more from students. Not a fair grader too.
Avoid her classes
Extremely interactive with students and constantly pushing for more out of them. As someone who prefers remote learning, I participated heavily throughout the semester. I missed the final presentation due to contracting COVID and she dropped my final grade by almost two letter points and would not reconsider.
Class is so bad! Do not take as gen ed! So hard for no reason like I don't want to be a political scientist it needs to calm down!! She doesn't even teach and then doesn't even post slides. Class resembles grad TA's class. It's literally a 100 level class-
Avoid this class at all costs. Tests are impossible, the midterm average was a 66% which she blamed us for, and unclear essay instructions with points deducted for unknown expectations. Vital TA feedback was blocked leaving us to struggle on our own. She treats the course like a 300 level, and it feels like she actively wants students to fail.
This professor is a professional yapper, you will learn nothing in the lectures and the TA I had was no help whatsoever, the quizzes are random and are unnecessarily difficult.
You've read the other reviews here. They aren't entirely wrong, nor are they right. My experience was that if you give her what she wants- go to lectures, ask questions, and generally give her respect- then she will respect you. I've found it rewarding, and would recommend her class, but you need to enjoy the subject and participate to do well.
Amanda is passionate in her field, but that doesn't translate to students taking an intro course. People in this thread say it's like a Level 300 class -- which it is -- but there's more to it; the exams, discussion surprise essays, and lecture specifics are formulated against you. That's not a 300 course; that is a GPA killer and time waster.
Do not. Do not. DO NOT take this class. It is absolutely terrible and will ruin your freshman year and freshman year GPA. Please do not make the same mistake that I did. Being a stem major and needing to fulfill the G-credit, this
The professor teaches the course as if it is the 300 level, the course material is heavy and when she explains material its as though she expects you to have background on the lectures and be aware of what she is talking about. Tests are difficult and lecture based so in that sense attendance is mandatory.
Honestly, if you need it for the gen ed just stick it out, otherwise avoid it at all costs. The class is decently considered difficult. The lectures are a lot and oftentimes just way unclear and confusing. Tests are hard, in my opinion take advantage of office hours with the TA, textbook helps but honestly is more secondary for the exams.
Professor Licht is one of the most unfair professors at Binghamton. Her lectures are purely conceptual and her tests are nothing like the lectures. Do not take this class. :(
Licht is very knowledge in poly sci. That being said, her class is not a 100 level course. With the textbook, lectures and supplemental readings it is too much work for an intro level class. The quizes will break you down and she offers no sympathy for people adjusting to college classes. Avoid unless you are very dedicated to plsc.
She just has no chill and is making this class way harder then it should be. She also annoying but the TAs were very good.
Professor Licht is the worst teacher I have ever had. PLSC 117 is supposed to be an intro course but she treats it like a graduate level course. She somehow manages to make genuinely interesting material tedious and boring with her long-winded lectures. I cried 16 times during the semester I took the course, and 15 of those times were from her.
Absolutely terrible teacher. AVOID THIS CLASS DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE THAT I DID AND TAKE IT FRESHMAN YEAR THINKING IT WAS A GOOD INTRO COURSE. Awful teacher and the TA's know less than me. Amanda Licht should be fired and banned from ever teaching again.
Awful Professor
Avoid her at all costs. She has stated in her lecture that her grandfather is a nazi... yikes. ummm yah. She wasted lecture time to explain how much money she makes and to complain about her children. She expects that everyone magically understands politics before taking an intro class and blames the class for failing her impossible tests.
Very lecture-focused class. The textbook is rarely referenced, especially on exams. Dr. Licht is knowledgeable but instills a very academic understanding of the subject. The class overall has been difficult at times but if you are ready to devote serious time to it you will be okay.
Licht's tests are extremely lecture-heavy, and you risk failure even with thorough textbook study. Her vapid teaching style prioritizes academic jargon over effective instruction. My experience was mediocre at best; not recommended, especially for a gen ed requirement. Save yourself the trouble and take literally any other course.
ridiculously hard 100 level class. my ta said it was the hardest one hes ever seen. the lectures are boring, the textbook readings are ridiculously long, and her tests are so hard that everyone fails and then she blames us for not studying. by far the hardest 100 level class ive ever taken. helps if you have a good ta which i did but avoid if u can
Please do not take this class, the tests are absolutely impossible and the teaching style is so unfair and complicated. She is not a nice teacher and you could easily study for hours and not know nearly enough material for this course. If you want to take a political science class avoid this teacher at all costs. This is considered graduatematerial
Extremely difficult professor. Treated this intro course like a graduate level course. Tests are nearly impossible and she blames students for failing. She is filled with nasty comments and snarky remarks and is reluctant to provide assistance to students. The TAs were sympathetic and the only redeemable aspect of this class and this professor.
Avoid at all costs
The hardest class I have ever taken. Extremely lecture heavy tests even though you have to read the textbook anyway and she yaps for the entire lecture. Her grandfather was a nazi, you take pop quiz essays in your discussion section, the TAs are no help, do not take this class at all.
Professor Licht is very knowledgeable about political science but she should not be teaching a 100 level intro class. The tests were insanely hard, the class average on all the test were Ds. She teaches the basics of IR too quickly and goes into specifics when the foundation is shaky. Do not take this class if you dont have to.
Prof Licht honestly treats the class like a higher-level course. She doesn't post lectures on Brightspace& tests are lecture-heavy. The class is very boring and I ended up teaching myself everything. She's the yapmaster and treats class time like a therapy session yapping abt her life and family (grandpa was a nazi..). Avoid her.
Worst Class I have ever taken at BU, It was ungodly hard for a 100 level course and She provides no extra help to the student, she doesn't post her lectures anywhere. The way she grades is super strict and you can lose points for SO many things, I recommend NEVER taking a course with this professor if you have the choice.
She is not meant to teach a basic 100 level course. My recommendation is to show up to lectures and pay attention. In addition, make sure to read the textbook heavily. Unfortunately, there is a lot more to lose than to gain with this professor.
While Dr. Licht is very knowledgeable about political science, her grading structure and teaching style do not do her subject justice. She has consistently come across as condescending and unhelpful over email and in response to questions in class. The class is graded on a curve and quizzes measure your test-taking ability than the content.
It did not seem like the professor cared about her students or wanted us to actually learn. She was condescending and when test grades were poor she blamed it on us rather than her inability to teach the content well. There was a strange group project on a website called statecraft that taught me absolutely nothing and just wasted my time.
The lectures were somewhat useless as the pop quizzes Professor Licht assigned were centered around the week's readings and she's a harsh grader; so, be sure to stay on top of everything. She has great knowledge of specifics in world politics and is good at clarifying concepts. Take an Intro World Politics class beforehand, trust me.
You'll either really like or dislike Licht. She's a ridiculously strict grader. Regardless if attendance is mandatory or not, you really have to go to class because you might miss a quiz that can really hurt your grade. You must pay close attention to everything mentioned in the readings because her quiz/test questions are so specific.
Makes ridiculously hard tests that hours on hours of studying barely help.
For an intro level politics class this class is insanely hard. Profesor Licht teaches almost none of the test materials. You can study for hours and still feel lost on exams. If you want to teach yourself an entire course this course is for you. Avoid this course and professor at all costs. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I MADE.
Perhaps the worst political science course I've taken here. She is ungodly difficult for an intro-level course, the topics are very simple too, she just overcomplicates them for no reason. Just a weird lady, her grandfather was a nazi, she talks a lot about that. Don't take her, Kranso's 111 plsc course is much easier. Recommend that one
I should have listened to all of the people who told me not to take this course. It is an intro level course, yet it is extremely hard to do well and the professor is rude. Weekly, 50+ page textbook reading, none of which are tested so they are useless. Paper worth 30% and is extremely hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Took PLSC117 for a gen ed and I was pretty confused by the end of it. Very conceptual- we were talking about game theory for half the semester instead of any real world scenarios. The tests really dragged down my grade, since I had no idea what was going to be on them despite our TA doing his best to explain the prof's overly complicated lectures.
At the beginning and middle part of this semester I was quite frustrated by this professor. She can be a little testy and pedantic. That said, she is accommodating, creates an accessible space for students, and encourages independent study and creativity. When I reached out for help over email she provided amazing assistance. Demands dedication.
AVOID. the worst class i've ever taken. regardless of your major or if you need the G credit for a gen ed, find something else. find anything else. TAs aren't great, either. forces you to read from textbook but tests are all based on lecture. yaps the whole time about her nazi grandparents or her toddler. insanely harsh grader. gpa killer.
This is NOT a level 100 course. Even the TAs seemed confused at times and were generally unhelpful. I often received conflicting feedback from the TAs and the professor. She also yaps way too much about unimportant information. Class average on the midterm was a 60 and she told us it was our fault through a mass email.
what can very easily be a free 100 lvl gen-ed is turned to an overcomplicated slobber of useless information. the stuff she teaches can easily be condensed into 1 hr lectures twice a week, instead of 3 hours a week. her lectures are boring + her tests don't prove anything about your understanding. they just suck, no reason to be this hard, useless.
This isn't a class for a student that has no interest in the machinations of the nations of the world. Reading some of the reviews here and hearing the talk of the students in my class, I'm confused as to what lectures they were attending. Professor Licht provides an engaging and understandable lecture to those who make the effort to pay attention.
I hated going into her class. She wouldn't explain things well for students. She doesn't post the slides or provide any review so it makes it harder to even be able to study as she expects you to write down what she says while she's talking at a million miles per hour. She only provided the essay prompts ahead of time for the final so I was lost.
Took this class because I am interested in politics and usually do well in poli-sci subjects so thought it would be an interesting class. Lectures were boring and felt like I was waiting to get past the introduction/theory based stuff but never happened. TAs were useless. No matter how well you knew the content it didn't matter for tests. Avoid.
Your gpa might take a hit but if you really paid attention then you might learn something, but there's likely better options. Also textbook is too expensive.
The worst professor I've had through college so far. She's not a understanding professor. Only exception will be for an extravagant event like a death in the family. The TA grades everything. Doesn't post the slides not that they're much help anyway. She expects you to write down everything she says but that's not doable with how fast she talks.
A scourge on this earth. Expect questions on the unnecessary hard test on topics that were covered on the lecture for a grand total of 5 minutes. The lectures also cover some unimportant topics which were just a time-waster. I learned most of the class from my textbook.
Beware of insanely specific questions on the midterms and final.
The reviews on Prof. Licht are overall really negative and while on some cases I agree (she is lecture heavy and not the best at explaining topics) if you make an effort in studying for this class it is very possible to get a good grade.
A ton of work for a 100 level, pretty hard course material. Very fast paced, useful for learning a lot in political science from one class but it's a large investment of time.
Professor Licht is condescending and makes her lectures overly complicated. She treats the class like a level 400 class rather than a level 100. She can be nice but shouldn't be teaching a level 100 course.
Other ratings of Professor Licht get part of the story correct, as the class and course material was quite difficult, but I found her lectures to be very good. She has a high level of topical expertise, and is very fair. 117 Is really hard for a 100 level class, make sure to read the textbook and study hard for tests. Don't skip lecture, ever.
Not a good teacher, no one got an A, save your GPA, tests impossible even with studying for days
A bad professor; she is rude to students and asks questions that are oddly specific on exams.
Impossible exams and irrelevant lectures. Disrespectful to students.
