I love professor Stone! She is insanely passionate about geography and knows just about every student in my 100+ class by name. Pay attention in class. Do the online homework every week and you should be fine. Clicker questions every class and random in class assignments. She really wants you to succeed. You have to study to pass the tests!
I enjoyed this professor a lot! Her class id just to take notes on the things that she says, and as long as you take notes and study then you will be fine. If you do not like to come to class then I would not recommend her because the notes are very important and helpful. She is very caring and is available during office hours and outside them.
She teaches very detailed lectures and explains the content very well. She also seems to really care about us, as long as you are doing your best and she knows whether or not you are. I'm used to teachers like her back in high school; but, if you aren't used to studying, taking very detailed notes, and managing your time, then you better learn.
Loved this prof. Prepare to work; she has clicker questions, tests, in-class assignments, online "tests", and exams. Don't miss class or use your phone/laptop, she knows everyone's name and will call you out. She gives you the lectures before class (fill-in-the-blank), videos, and page numbers, because she wants you to learn.
I took an 8:00 am and she made the class so enjoyable and fun. Attendance is required as there are often in class assignments and quizzes, which are easy. Not too big on homework, only the occasional worksheets. I don't think the textbook is needed, as all the readings are discussed in the lectures. I highly recommend her.
she has clicker questions, tests, in-class assignments, online homework due weekly, and exams. Don't use your phone she knows everyone's name and will call you out. She gives you the lectures before class (fill-in-the-blank) on canvas, videos, and page numbers, because she wants you to learn. Her tests aren't anything like the lectures
Dont take her she is horrible litteraly clicker questions evrey day as well she will call you out if your on your phone. choose another natural science or wait a semester
She is a good person and cares about her students. With that being said her tests are very detailed and if you are not a science person and do not want to study for hours every night then do not take this class. I attended every class and got all the clicker/ assignment points but never scored over a 55 on a test and passed the class.
Professor Stone is a good professor. She clearly states what she wants from you. Her notes are organized and you have weekly homework and quizzes. She does not tolerate slackers or people who skip class. If you try your best, you will do just fine.
Professor Stone is honestly unlike any teacher or professor I have ever had. She clearly and thoroughly goes through the class content but through her supplemental information and diagrams in addition to the powerpoints, she constantly displays her true passion and knowledge surrounding the subject.
Professor Stone is by far one of the most amazing instructors I have ever had. She is clear on her expectations and gives you every resource (and extra resources) needed to pass her class. I have made a 95 or better on all her tests. She is passionate and uses diverse methods to teach the material for clarification. 100% recommend.
Professor Stone is extremely knowledgable, and her class is structured such that you have many opportunities to improve your grade if you messed up at one spot. Her tests are hard, but face it people - this is college. You need to study. You absolutely will not pass if you skip class.
Ms. Stone is an amazing professor. She teaches exciting topics that might make you start considering switching to the sciences. Its not an easy class, you need to be constantly studying. She teaches with passion and really wants you to succeed. If you are having a hard time she will be happy to help. One of my favorite professors!
She is very easy to respect. She won't take your crap and will call you out if you're being disrespectful, understandably. Her lectures are almost mandatory if you want to pass and studying is as well. Also, PollEV (clicker questions) count more towards your final percentage than you would think, so you have to go to answer them. I loved her though
I enjoyed the course overall. Professor Stone knows the material well and clearly has a passion to share it with others. She cares about her students but don't try to play games w/ her. This class will be a lot of work and you will be expected to put the time in. Read the book, do your homework, go to class, and study and you should be fine.
Professor Stone was a really great teacher. She cares about what she's teaching and is excited to teach those willing to learn. She is an extremely tough grader and expects you to study the material she has provided. She will call you out if asked a questions previously asked or one that was answered clearly in the textbook or a video provided.
She has a very smart attitude with her students and does not respond well to feedback. She will make this class so much harder than it needs to be. I would not recommend taking this class. Get ready to study and hurt your GPA
Professor Stone is absolutely one of my favorite professors I've had at UNCC. She is very knowledgable on the subject matter and makes lectures very fun and comprehendible. There are weekly online quizzes that pull information from lectures, posted videos, and the text but you can easily make a B in this class by just attending lectures and videos.
I would not recommend taking her 1100 class. She makes it much more difficult than it needs to be. If you miss any assignments for any reasons, don't expect her to help you out. Make sure you take notes and do every homework assignment. She will also grade your poll everywhere questions so don't think you can just show up to class. Not an Easy A
If you're thinking about taking ESCI 1101 for an easy A then don't take it with Amanda Stone. She makes the course more complicated than it should be. Within the first week of class she "bragged" how her class average was a B, as if that is something to brag about when you're teaching an intro class. If you want lots of studying take this class...
Call her professor petty she will call you out and wont think twice about it. You definitely need to study for her test. You need to attend lectures if you want to pass she also has pool everywhere questions EVERY CLASS and also does in class assignment that you cant makeup of your not there so basically go to class
Poll Everywhere every day. Hw's every week online. (No worries). Tests are HARD. Quizzes are fine. Work on the study guide you should do okay. Very particular for small details. NO CURVES. Dumb video questions.
I was a stellar student in Professor Stone's class, and I never missed a single lecture or poll everywhere (LOTS)!! and I also never missed a homework assignment except for one. Everyone in the class was handed the paper apparently and I wasn't. I asked her for forgiveness because I had never goofed off or anything and she denied leniency.
Professor Stone is one of the hardest teachers Ive had. She takes this class as that you are going to go into the field of geography, not that it is a needed science credit to graduate. Tests are incredibly hard, make sure youre ready for class to begin and ready to take pages and pages of notes.
you need to show up to class if you want to pass. Poll Everywhere was every day and it would range from 1-6ish questions. The tests are hard and are in class, so make sure you study. take notes. She will call you out if you have headphones in, sleeping, etc. She gives online homework assignments every week and the in-class quizzes arent that hard.
Currently in her class as writing this but I wanted to get it in before course registration was finished. She is rude and boring NO laptops, headphones, phones, or talking (you can whisper). Have to show up because of the Poll EV. Test are hard, review HW, Assignments, notes, videos, and read. Make sure you write everything down that she writes.
Amanda Stone is very passionate about what she teaches. She will call you out if you are talking during lecture. Headphones and laptops not allowed out in class. Attendance is mandatory with Poll EV. Tests are hard, but study guides are provided. Just pay attention to lecture and take notes and you should be fine.
A lot of people give her too much hate. She cares about the subject. Most people get angry because she will call out students for being on phones or having earbuds in. The course material is pretty easy and the tests are straight forward. Take notes. There are PollEv questions every day. There are sometimes in-class assignments so go to class.
Lots of lectures but she seems happy to answer any questions. Sometimes she will go off.
Professor Stone get's a bad rep, but she was definitely a highlight of my semester. She knows her stuff. I thoroughly enjoyed this class, but it was a little stressful because if you missed a homework assignment (like I did) it can be hard to bounce back to an A. Not a very tough class besides that. The exams are not too hard, just pay attention.
If you have to take her, watch out for weird outbursts of frustration. She does not have much patience it all. Her tests are too long for no reason. There is homework every week, quizzes every other week, and tests every few weeks. However, if you can look over all that, you will be fine in the class if you do the work and show up for the lectures.
Professor Stone is great at what she does and knows her field extremely well. Youll have homework due every Sunday and there are a couple quizzes and in-class assignments. She takes attendance and does poll-everywhere so its smart to go to class. There are 4 exams including the final. They can be kinda tough so I recommend doing the study guide
I definitely learned a lot in this course, but it heavily depends on your notes. Get close to the people you sit with early because she creates a seating chart. She could briefly mention one thing and it ends up on the exam. TAKE NOTES ON EVERYTHING!!
Believe these reviews, made us take a test in the middle of a tornado when all other professors had cancelled. Has a seating chart and will call you by name if you speak in class. The topic of her dissertation is part of the final exam, and she is just a general pain of a professor.
She knows her stuff, but she is WAY too quick to jump down peoples throats. I watched her absolutely tear students apart for asking a simple question and then when she'd play a video or something go over and apologize. She yelled at a student for asking to take an exam at the front of the class because he came in sick at the start of COVID. Insane.
DO NOT TAKE HER unless she is your only option. she for sure knows what she's talking about but She is very rude. makes you get assigned seat. Calls people out in class. Will say rude comments if you ask questions She's a very bad teacher.
Don't take her class. She got her personal life issues and she mad on others why? Her class is 50 min Mon, Wed and Fri and in the test, she put 52 questions why?. The class is super easy. Take with somebody else.
Just show up and pay attention. No phones, headphones, any sort of electronics out. Would recommend printing out the powerpoints and adding notes during lectures. Take notes on any videos posted on Canvas or shown in class. Make sure you pick a good seat, because you'll be sitting there the entire semester. Overall, a pretty good instructor.
I don't know why Dr. Stone has a mediocre rating, she was amazing! So nice and caring. Really made an effort to get to know her students even though we were all online. Don't buy the textbook, if you really want it try and rent it.
Please please, please don't go to her class because her class is 50 min and in her tests 52 questions on each test. The hw is also hard. She is so rude.
While Amanda is a delightful person, her class was very challenging. The exams are tough, and there is a lot of homework. The lectures are pretty interesting, but it's hard to enjoy them when you're quizzed on nearly every section. Overall, she's a wonderful human being, but her class is not recommended.
She recommends a textbook but I barely used it. I strongly advise you to take the online class so you can rewind the lecture videos. Take advantage of the HW being a 4-hour quiz that you can use your notes on. She is generally hitting the important stuff hard and was very friendly.
I took this course during COVID-19 so I didnt really know Professor Stone. Seemed like a nice person but exams were quite difficult. Homework was easy and you have plenty of time to complete it. Suggested a textbook but never used it. Overall, okay class but definitely not my favorite.
Dr. Stone was an OK choice for Earth Science. Textbook was useful, but I didn't rely on it every week. Multiple choice and true/false questions on HW, quizzes, and exams were great and fairly self-explanatory. Not my favorite class, but not my least favorite either. Lecture slides were put-together well.
You are given poll questions for credit so you must attend class. She teaches the class as if you intend to major in the topic (Which many students aren't) so it may be difficult but with studying I was able to get an A on most Assignments. She can be a little strict at times but I enjoyed her class due to its consistency for each lecture.
She gives a weekly homework assignment which most of the answers can be found online. The test and quizzes however are in class so you must study for those. Textbook is not needed. She does a Poll Everywhere each class so you must come.
Super, super nice! Show up to most of the classes, complete assignments in a timely manner, and introduce yourself within the first couple of weeks during her office hours and she will remember you. Super helpful and accessible to meet outside of class. Only one extra credit assignment offered.
Dr. Stone is an incredible scholar in her field and her lectures are definitely entertaining to listen to and learn from. However every single one my interactions with her have been rather mentally draining and disappointing to say the least. Shes gone so far out of her way to be rude even on interactions where I havent spoken a single word.
Dr.Stone’s lectures are fascinating to listen to and she’s very knowledgable in her field. As far as her ability to hold my attention in class, she’s among the best there is. However Dr.Stone does have occasional irrational outbursts, which is the only thing preventing this from being a 5 star review
If you want to feel miserable within a 50 minute time span, this class is for you! Professor Stone is rude for no reason and if you ask a question, she gives you smart remarks. Truly unprofessional and do not recommend this class to anyone. Tests are barely related to lectures and course is more difficult than it needs to be.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Very rude for no reason. You can ask the most simple question and she will catch an attitude. Someone next to me replied to her one time in the most respectful way, and she flipped out. Makes a simple intro course way more difficult than it needs to be. Tests are very hard. Feels like high school with her insane rules.
Dr. Stone does lectures every class and the Poll Everywhere is done in class. They aren't each worth that many points, she does them to clarify understanding and keep your attention. If you pay attention, the class will be quite easy for you and won't take up too much of your time. She is overall a very kind professor.
A lot of people that take this class are freshman, and therefore you see a lot of complaining. Truth is that all you need to do is go to class and follow the syllabus and this class is easy. Light weekly homework and readings, do those alone and you will get a B.
She goes over all of the assignments and explains things really well. If you just pay attention and keep up with the work, it is not a super tough course. She also repeats important material in her lectures so you know to have it and gives lot of helpful hints. She wants you to learn and do well.
You def learn a lot. If you show up and put in some effort, you'll at least get a D.
Don't know why Stone gets a bad rap, but she's a good professor.
If you actually did the reading, the homework was nothing crazy, tests were pretty easy, and the course was not overly difficult.
Solid course.
Good course! Not too overly tough if you study and put a little effort in.
Course was taught well and you learn a lot!
Many outbursts during class which was distracting from learning. Neurotic, cold, condescending. Is seemingly nice one minute and rude the next. Knows the material well but creates a tense learning environment. Tests are highly uncomfortable because she paces around the room watching everyone skeptically. I couldn't wait for this class to be over.
The worst professor I've ever had. The environment created was militant and rigid for unnecessary reasons. This class made me feel like I was in high school again, or maybe even junior high. Emotionally immature conduct.
Long, boring lectures, kind of rude, easy to set off. Seems emotionally unstable but well versed and knowledgeable on the topics she goes over.
Definitely the WORST professor I've EVER had. It feels like I'm in high school, her teaching environment is belligerent. She is extremely rude - whether you ask to go to the bathroom, or stay after class and approach her with questions about a homework assignment, she makes it a priority to condescend you. Avoid at all costs!
Probably the worst professor I have had in my time at university. Responds to the simplest of questions with the most condescending and rude answers. No laptops allowed for notes. PowerPoint's unclear and difficult to follow. Super rigid and tense learning environment. Easy material but makes the class unnecessarily difficult.
The second worst professor I've ever had. While she may be well-versed in terms of material, her people skills are at a 10% capacity maximum. Incredibly low EQ.
Truly the best professor I've ever had. Very professional and has a strong passion for making sure her students understand each topic. Absolutely love her and would 100% take her courses again. They're not the easiest but I promise you will learn a lot about time management along with the course materials.
Dr. Stone definitely knows what she is teaching, her class is somewhat tough and is quite a time commitment, and the quizzes and tests are hard to some extent, but if you pay attention, they shouldn't be that. Her class is def not an easy A kind of class, it's more of a class you actually have to put effort into. Kind of a hard class overall.
Dr. Stone is very knowledgeable and clearly very passionate about education and geology. If you take her course, form a relationship with her and she will be your ally. She is understanding and works with her students. Email, meet, or talk with her! Reviews call her rude. She teaches classes with 150-200 students that are disrespectful/distracting.
Dr. Stone is, simply put, childish and exhausting to deal with. She will berate students for asking questions, be snarky in her response emails, and the way she operates is trivial. She makes it feel like high school again, takes attendance every class and has a strict seating chart. If she is having a bad day, she will make it everyone's problem.
Dr. Stone is an amazing professor that has a passion for earth science and geology. Her lectures are extremely helpful and provide all the information you need to succeed on homeworks, quizzes, and tests.
Dr.Stone's lectures and course material are easy to understand. However the instructor herself reminds me of a strict high school lecture and will wait until the class stops talks before continuing the lecture. She also comes off as condescending when answering questions or returning quizzes.
Amanda Stone is a terrible professor. Do not take Amanda stone. This class is an insane amount of information ajnd very very very very boring. If you want to complete a study guide for a test be ready to answer questions for like 4 hours at least. she also assins videos and readings which are on the test. L PROFESSOR. Dont take this class.
Dr. Amanda Stone is an amazing teacher. She cares and helps you if you actually talk with her. If you do the work being studying, reading, homework, and attend class then you will do fine. If you feel like you are becoming overwhelmed reach out to her or fellow classmates. Dr. Stone really makes this class enjoyable. 10/10.
I believe constructive criticism and a in depth adjustment of her teaching style will suit the professor. A lot of the information she gave during lecture was not relevant to the tests. Majority of the information needed was geared towards videos she posted. I did not use my book at all for the course, which is discouraging since we paid for it.
Dr Stone is condescending and unnecessarily rude. She goes out of her way to make people look stupid for asking questions. Though she is knowledgeable, does absolutely way too much for this class. Tests are not based on lectures or textbooks and a lot of test material was not covered in class. I got a good grade but had to study so much. Dont take.
Dr.Stone is a good professor if you care about the class. Even as someone who did care about the class, she can still be tough. She acted a lot like a high school teacher rather than a college professor.
Lectures are engaging and attendance is graded heavily. HW is easy but tests are unnecessarily hard & questions seemed random and niche. The study guides provided are thorough but take hours to complete. Begin studying for the tests early and don't expect an easy A.
Dr. Stone is an amazing professor. Her lectures are very detailed and she provides fill-in-the-blank PowerPoints to help you take your notes. She also provides supplemental videos on Canvas to help explain topics. Only downside is, she does not hand back exams. If you want to know what you got wrong, you have to show up to her office.
Dr. Stone is knowledgeable in what she teaches are sticks to a schedule. Quiz and tests dates are given first week of class. Quizzes are easy and tests are easy as long as you come to class. Half of the extra credit that is given with each test half is super easy the other half is much harder but not impossible if you take detailed notes.
Dr. Stone is an amazing professor and she is easy to follow along in class. If you take notes and pay attention in lectures you should be able to pass her tests and quizzes. I studied little to nothing, and I got high 80s to '90s. She has a lot of passion and knowledge for geology and other earth sciences which made her class enjoyable.
Professor Stone is a very good teacher! She knows exactly what she is talking about in every lecture. Very informative on all information and not a tough grader. I totally recommend to take her class!!
Dr. Stone knows exactly what she's talking about. She's a great professor although she talks for a long time about one topic. Attendance is mandatory (does Poll EV). You have to take notes in class but you can't have an upright computer, it has to be in a tablet form. Can't take photos of her PowerPoint/you won't have full access to the PowerPoint.
all of the stupid exams were so hard and like dumb
No laptops allowed, and no taking photos of slides. Test were comprised of VERY specific and small statements given during lectures. The study guides only covered broad topics, so if you don't write down everything Amanda says, you won't do so good on the test. Even with my notes and attendance in study sessions I still received C- and D+ on exams.
If you take a class with Dr. Stone you will definitely learn a lot; however, if you do not like lecture-heavy classes, avoid taking her. Her tests are very specific, but if you take good notes you should do fine. Dr. Stone cares about her students, but she DOES NOT allow any computers or phones out during lectures, only pen and paper.
I'm just gonna echo some points that other reviews have already stated. -Laptops are banned in her classroom, all notes have to be taken by hand. -Lecture-heavy classes (Test were comprised of very specific info given during lectures). -Attendance is mandatory, uses poll-everywhere. -Also has a mandatory seating chart that is enforced.
She has a lot of knowledge on the topic, but she doesn't answer people's questions during class, and if she does it's in a passive aggressive way. Treated the class like a strict high school teacher (no computers, seating chart even for large lecture, attendance is worth a lot). Quick to answer emails though.
She posts slides on canvas, but they are fill-in-the-blank and not readable. I think this is meant to make people attend class more, but class is already mandatory. The things that she puts on tests and quizzes are very specific and most students don't realize they're important enough to write down. She is not terrible though, just average.
She's very knowledgeable on the subject, so if you pay attention during the lectures and take notes you'll be fine. She's also very caring for her students, and if you have an issue with anyone, you can let her know and she'll do what she can to take care of it. The quizzes and tests are not hard, just pay attention and try not to miss any days.
Barefoot around the classroom and snatching up phones was common occurrence for Amanda. She is not afraid to embarrass her students for napping, yapping, or playing around. Amanda is a notorious yapper herself who lectures for the entire class period. The study guides are almost unusable as she adds every single chapter concept. Even the TAs agree.
I felt like I was in middle school during her class. She would sit on her desk and just look around silently if she heard a whisper of noise coming from the class. And when using Poll Everywhere for attendance she didn't care if someone's device wasn't working or they didn't have one, she'd mark them absent. Also, she didn't allow laptops in class.
Tests are in person. Hard grader. Don't take her
Dr. Stone is passionate about what she does and is very smart. She could be a little condescending when answering student questions, and it seemed like she got annoyed. She reminds me of a middle school science teacher in the way she teaches. Overall, I feel like I learned something in her class, which you can't say about a lot of professors.
Amanda is easily the worst professor i have had yet. Lectures consist of nothing but her talking, and if you talk in any way she will seek out to embarrass you. Even if you are asking her a question she will give you a condescending remark. The book is not utilized or useful. Tests are hard and very random. No computers allowed in her class either.
Overall, her class wasn't bad. The first few quizzes/exams were very simple as long as you took notes during lectures. The class gets much more difficult as the semester goes on because of the fact that you have to memorize so many things. Attendance is mandatory and there isn't much leeway with it. Study and take notes and you will be fine.
Dr Stone is knowledgeable in her field of study but shouldnt be a college professor. Her lectures consist of her just talking for an hour with no clear indication of what to take notes on. Study guides are useless. She does assigned seats and doesnt allow laptops. She is also pretty rude and treats the class like a 9th grade classroom.
Dr. Stone is very knowledgeable on her topic, but she goes on long tangents that make things confusing. She has the mentality of a high school teacher w/ assigned seats and no laptops. The class itself can be challenging but to understand you must do the weekly reading and watch the videos posted on canvas bc that's where she pulls questions from.
Ms. Stone does not have her PowerPoints posted but she also doesn't allow computers, so you have to write down everything she says, or you won't have all of the material. She is not caring towards her students and she is not forgiving. She has poll everywhere 2 times a class for attendance but if you get them wrong you are counted absent.
Dr. Stone was a pretty good professor. She's a little silly, but a bit strict. Attendance is very important as she uses poll-everywhere throughout the lecture. She was nice to me but seemed a bit mean to others. She's accommodating during office hours and answers emails. There are 20-30 questions on canvas homework weekly.
Attendance was mandatory, she goes by seating chart and pollev. You don't find out test scores until almost 2 weeks after you take it. Her lectures were very repetitive and long, she is very strict and a harsh grader.
Assigned seating, attendance mandatory, and proudly makes her class harder then its supposed to be. Grinded my tail off for a B. If it's you last choice I guess take it, but if not stay away. Will say she is very knowledgeable about the topic though.
She is very difficult. She expects you to know the textbook inside and out. She also refuses to post any of her PowerPoints. Attendance is very mandatory I can not stress that enough. You are also not allowed to use any tech in her class (computer, tablet, phone, etc.). All notes have to be handwritten and you can not take any photos of her notes.
This class is definitely lecture heavy and dont get into a habit of skipping class or your grade will tank. I happened to always miss class on days where there were in class assignments, so that tanked my grade. Overall, the professor is great it was just a tough subject in general as I had very little interest in the topics discussed.
No tech allowed, but handwriting notes helped me remember the material for class. Technically the seats aren't assigned, you choose where you want to sit in the first couple classes and that becomes your assigned seat. It helps the TA take attendance. She gives supplemental videos and readings in the textbooks which I would suggest taking notes on.
If you take this course I strongly encourage you to go to her office hours and introduce yourself. Forming a relationship with her will make you more successful in this class. 4 exams, pollEV questions every class (COME TO CLASS), 3 small quizzes, and a few in class assignments you can use your notes and peers for.
Dr.Stone is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches! One downside to her class is attendance is VERY mandatory, if you miss even one day your grade will go down. Quizzes and homework are easy, but exams are hard even if you study a lot. Take good notes!
She goes over diff material during class and says that it's important to know for quizzes and exams, but I found that a lot of the stuff on the exams wasn't the same. Attendance is taken partially through poll everywhere - and if you get the question wrong you will get half points, so even if you are there, your grade can still drop.
Attendance is mandatory, uses pollEV but also has assigned seating so you have to be there. Posts PowerPoint but has them fill in the blanks. Very lecture heavy be prepared to take notes she does ramble on so it gets hard to follow. The tests are multiple choice & true and false, will say the tests are longer and are easy if you don't miss class.
Seemed erratic at times and quick to lash out. Quite a tough grader and comes across as condescending. Knowledgeable but lacking in patience. If you get on her bad side, watch out. Ms. Stone would be better as a high school teacher. Very strict.
If she hates teaching so much why does she do it?
Most up tight teacher I have ever dealt with. No laptops allowed.
Most up tight teacher I have ever dealt with.
She doesn't allow laptops in class. She talks so fast and lashes out at students on their phones. She is extremely uptight and attendance is required, THERE ARE ASSIGNED SEATS. Class is pretty easy but she makes it harder than it has to be.
She is a very well-structured teacher. She makes sure to review over the textbook herself before lecture to include as most as possible during lecture, although we don't always finish the entirety of the unit before exams, so we have to use our quizzes or textbook as reference.
Honestly, I get why a lot of people don't like her, but she is pretty good at what she does. She does sometimes get a bit off topic during lectures, but moves fast in a good way. She explains assignments and due dates clearly and has 3 tests and quizzes, in class assignments and homework. Attendance is graded by pollev and is a grade.
Assigned seats, with mandatory attendance. She does not let you use laptops. no makeup work or extra credit on assignments. As long as you follow directions, she will like you. Lots of reading from a text book, with homework every week (30 questions).
Ok professor. Very passionate about what she does. Makes her class take a lot of notes during lectures, and doesn't allow laptops. Tests were pretty weird, a lot of the questions were really weird and niche info that she went over for 5 minutes, rather than the big topics. LOTS of reading. Be ready to study and read and take a lot of notes
Difficult if you don't pay attention. Tends to call you out if you don't focus which makes it feel as if you're still in high school. If you're looking a chill laid back class than any class with Dr. Stone isn't for you. Extra credit is given on the tests tho which helps.
She's the most uptight professor I have ever dealt with. She's so mean to students and does not have the patience to answer questions. Does not allow laptops and has assigned seat! I mean come on is this high school?? Her exams are hard and she assigns a ton of reading every week. Don't take her class if you have any other option.
Not a very hard class, but she treats you like a 1st grader. Not allowed to take notes on any “upright screens”, so expect a lot of handwriting.
This class was very lecture heavy with lot's of information not included on PowerPoints. This made it hard to take notes because everything is jumbled up. Only allows notes on paper and tablets. Tests are very vocab heavy and mostly pulled from the notes. Takes FOREVER to grade tests when they could very easily been given on canvas.
Grades harsh and late. Can be disrespectful to students. Go to class! Making up the work is not worth it, and also read what she assigns, she will randomly put questions from the reading in poll everywhere and the exam. Also there is a poll everywhere every day.
I was assaulted the night before my final exam, the next day I went into the exam to take the test. I just wanted to let her know what would happened and wanted to ask to move seats a little bit away from students or even sit at the front, she didn't let me explain anything. After the exam I went to tell her and she again ignored meDidn't even look
Honestly the more time you spend with her the more you realize she's a bad teacher. Her tests are very disconnected to the lectures even though she makes them. She also takes forever to give you any feedback for her class, so you might not be able to correct a mistake you made.
I never had any issues with her, but I see why people don't like her. Her class is difficult, she's a little snappy, she doesn't allow laptops, and she is very strict on attendance. Her tests are also pretty hard and you MUST read the textbook to do well on them. Her in class assignments are hard too and you're only given like 5 minutes to do it.
In order to do well on the exams, you HAVE to do read the either the textbook or outside research from the lecture notes, it is very hard to do well with just studying the lectures notes alone. So exams are hard, there are assigned seats after the 2nd week, no laptops, treats her room like a high school class at times, however her lectures r great
Professor Stone's class is tough - attendance is strictly enforced, and exams can be challenging even with diligent studying. However, her lectures are engaging, and resources like unstuckstudy can help supplement the textbook. Overall, a rewarding class for dedicated students.
You have assigned seats, that you pick the first week, which the TA marks your attendance. The entire class is a lecture, with 3 in-class assignments throughout the course. I honestly liked her lectures, they were put together and she seemed to know what she was talking about. She was outwardly mean to some students, just don't get on her bad side.
No upright laptops and assigned seats. She uses poll everywhere and her TA for attendance. She talks most of the time and doesn't answer questions if she's rushing. Most of the tests are combinations of her lectures, textbooks, and videos she posts, so read and watch everything. I struggled but it helped a little. Attend the TA Exam reviews!
Admittedly, the class is not too difficult, but you can not blow this off, studying is mandatory. She does not rant and goes in depth for purely interest, most topics are understood in the first 10 seconds of each slide. Your grade will not be bumped. She is very abrasive, learn to take joy in other peoples misfortune. She is nice if you are polite
I just want to start off with saying I deeply respect Dr. Stone. She has a lot of students and so much material to cover. That being said, sometimes, she can get lost in tangents or get confused. However, it doesn't help that she has other students distracting her. Overall, I think she is a great professor but be warned about the exams, they matter!
The epitome of a millennial teacher. She talks a lot with her hands and will treat you like a kid. Laptops with “Upright” screens are not allowed. Also she discourages tablets but allows them. Attendance is required and gives very little leeway for any absences. Slides have missing words which you need context from the class which sucks. Don't take
Dr. Stone is a good professor. She has rules but they are not too strict. You have to listen very closely to get information you need and should write down most of what she is saying. There might be questions on the exam that you would only know if you were paying attention. Study guides are very detailed and take a lot of time to complete.
She was great! There are assigned seats and the class is super lecture heavy but she was really cool. She gets super into her rocks and can go off on tangents but like... that's her job?? She doesn't take bs though. If you are kind she is kind back! Anyone saying that she is rude was most definitely rude to her first. She was a great teacher.
Dr. Stone is a fascinating lecuturer. Her knowledge is amazing. She loves her field. I would take every class she teaches.
This is one of the teachers you will have a love-hate relationship with but ultimately if you hate her, you most likely did not study or did not participate. There is only one assignment every week (sometimes two weeks) because she teaches all the gen ed earth science classes which means she has to grade a lot. Just takes an hour or two a week.
She is incredibly condescending and seems pissed off when anyone in the class asks her any questions. She often blows up in class over one person sleeping or being on their phone. Has a no-laptop or upright screen rule and often stops lecture to take a phone or laptop away from a person using it which disrupts class more than the person using it.
Review sessions are not helpful, exams are extremely long including questions on random references she makes during lectures. Rarely gives homework, but fails to tell students that it is assigned. Exams make up majority of your grade, she is very rude and I have watched her happily and intentionally embarrass students in front of the entire class.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
Do not take her. She makes the class 10x harder than it needs to be; her lectures are all over the place with no clear indication of what to annotate, and study guides are useless. She's incredibly rude to those who ask questions and her behavior and treatment towards students is overall immature and demeaning.
Great prof, passionate & funny. With her ESCI/GEOL easiest classes you'll take. No upright laptops. Attendance kind of mandatory, she posts notes on canvas but parts will be blank. There is a textbook. Few assignments, only ever done before a test to help prep. I had bad attendance/never read textbook & passed easily (A in ESCI/B in GEOL)
This is one of the teachers you will have a love-hate relationship. She is very lecture heavy and assigns many take home assignments. She is a fun teacher though, asks many questions using Poll Everywhere to make sure students master the topics and her tests are fairly easy. Very straightforward and easy class if you show up and listen.
I had to spent countless hours studying for just a general education class and I was surprised that the information on the notes weren't exactly accurate on the test. She also provided tutoring sessions but the material was totally different than what we expected. No laptops were allowed or pice to be taken so everything was hardcore and suffering.
Dr. Stone is great! She's clear about her policies on the first day and does stick by them (no laptops/no talking). She is very knowledgeable but lecture heavy. Just learn how to take notes properly and you're good! The tests always have questions directly correlating to class.
Easy class, won't need to read the textbook, but unkind and unaccommodating. If you are sick, have surgery, or have any emergency, do not expect to get any points back. She will not care about you, going so far as to state that "you are all numbers" directly. Just go to class and you'll be fine, but I'd avoid taking her.
I recommend not taking this teacher for GEOL 1200 if anything this should be your last resort. She made the exams very hard containing around 70 questions with a final being 150 questions. If you miss class don't expect to get credit at all! Attendance was mandatory due to Pollev questions asked daily.
Attendance is taken everyday along with poll ev questions and most of the test material comes from the lectures. Her personality can be a little volatile, but she is nice most of the time and her lectures are engaging. As long as you show up to lectures and do the work you will be fine.
if possible don't take her 😭
If you want to skip class and not learn, don't take her. if you do want to learn, go for it! She is lecture heavy and a lot of the information she teaches are not on the power point but if you take notes and pay attention, you'll do great. She's really sweet and nice, just don't talk while she's teaching and you'll be fine
This woman will not work with you. She does not care what grade you get nor does she care to listen to you. She does not have respect for her students. The entire class is consists of lectures of her going over a powerpoint in a boring manner. Amanda Stone is a horrible professor and she noticeably does not like her job.
This professor is honestly horrible STAY FAR AWAY! Zero leniency I had to exams at the same time on the day of her final, she wouldn't let me reschedule resulting in me getting a 0 and failing the class
I'm only in my second semester in college and I can confidently say she is one of the worst professors to have. She is so rude to her students and seems annoyed when someone has a genuine question regarding a topic relating to the material. She goes out of her way to shame students. Do not take her.
I don't need to comment on her attitude as other commenters have made that clear, however I will highlight that she not only refuses to post notes online but also calls out students for taking pictures the slides in class, accusing them of copyright infringement?? No idea why she treats her lecture notes as if it's artwork.
This teacher has no ability to teach and absolutely no respect for her students or their well-being. Any issue you bring to her, you will be publicly mocked in front of the class. For her to still be teaching or even employed at this point is mind boggling. Good luck If your forced to take her class, your gonna need it.
She's very strict. Laptops are not allowed for taking notes and you will have to read a lot. Her lectures are fun sometimes but she will call you out if you're talking or doing something you shouldn't be doing.
She still teaching? She needs to be fire. She been like this since 2016.
She makes a very basic gen ed course harder than some of the higher-level core courses. Not only do you have to attend every lecture you also have to actively participate in poll-everywhere and get them correct to receive credit and make sure to pick a good seat on the first lecture cause you will be sitting there for the rest of the semester.
She was very inflexible and the attendance was mandatory unless you have a doctors note. Would not recommend.
Your grade will go down if you miss one class. Even if you study the study guide she makes you fill out (which takes days), you still won't know half the stuff on the tests and quizzes. Don't take!
My problem with this class is not that its boring (it was), it's the tests. The tests would have questions that have vague answers that are technically incorrect on t/f. As well as there would be questions about stuff she mentioned like 1 time for 12 seconds, then never mentioned again. So, if you don't have a good memory, you miss those questions.
You get what you put in for her class
Dr. Stone is tough, and she wont let shit fly, but if you get on her good side she's SO FUN! I made a great connection with Dr. Stone and she really inspired my love of earth sciences. You definitely have to be at least semi serious about getting your degree and actually coming to class if you're going to take her courses.
I took this class in the fall and the best thing I can compare her to is a middle school teacher. She doesn't really treat you like an adult sometimes she treats you as a kid and I feel like out of all the professors out there she will get on you for the smallest thing. If you have the opportunity to take another professor, please do
Not only is this class the most boring thing I've ever sat through, but this professor is comparably bad to my middle school teachers. To start, she has a "no laptop policy" which is insane for a college course. She treats everyone like a child and has this tone that she's just better than you. She also has a seating chart. I wish I had more chars.
Narcissistic
Not only do the test have no correlation to the study guide which can really bring down your grade she also doesn't include all of the notes in the PowerPoint you have to attend and if she gets upset at one student she will take it out on the whole class very immature take someone else if you can she is not helpful
Test are one long trick question and is very hard to study for in class she is very passive aggressive, snaps at simple questions, and would rather jump then taking her class again
Its maybe one hw assignment a week, and then each unit (3) have a quiz and a test. Most people on her ratings are overreacting; they just didn't listen to her simple rules. Just talk to her and use some simple reasoning before you ask questions.
I felt like there was no linear structure to the lectures, so I found myself lost pretty frequently. She pulls a lot of material for tests from the assigned readings, but she does give study guides which is nice. The quizzes were never too bad as long as you take good notes, which FYI, you will be writing by hand.
Attendance is mandatory, she does not take excuses for absences unless you have proof. Dont miss a quiz or an exam, she wont let you make it up. She teaches so fast she cant breathe, then puts things on the test that she mentioned one time. read, she puts things on exams that are in book and not lecture. dont talk, she shined her lazer in my face.
While the class is manageable, the professor is very childish and stuck up about things. Can be extremely judgmental when answering students' questions. Tests are hard and will contain things not mentioned in the lecture or will have content that was crammed in just so it could be on the test. Too annoying for a gen ed.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER. Awful teacher. I looked at her ratemyprofessor ratings before I joined her class and I didn't think much of it but i would do ANYTHING to go back and switch out. The class average for all of her tests were in the 60s and if you don't pay attention then you are just done for. Adolf Hitler was a kinder person than her.
She is extremely childish and will call you out in front of 170 people if you so much as whisper during her lecture. Has stopped class multiple times due to students "being disruptive" (leaving to register for classes). While she is very smart, she is also very rude. Don't expect to be able to make up tests or in-class assignments if you miss them.
She is very passionate about her field and gives good lectures. If you show up to class you will get a good grade. However, she is very strict on showing up on time every day as well as no technology in her class. If she catches you on your phone or computer she will tell you to leave.
Dr. Stone is a fun and engaging lecturer. She relies pretty heavily on the lecture to teach, but leaves some material in the textbook and homework assignments. She provides lecture PowerPoints in Canvas, but covers things in class that aren't in the presentation, so attendance is pretty important. Very fun, and cares about her students.
Could make better study guides by cutting them shorter and highlighting what's actually on the test.
